Thanks to the absence of new mechanics capable of livening up a gameplay that is starting to be a little too monotonous, rather than the compendium promised to fans of the brand, the tie-in seemed like a half-hearted and haphazardly assembled task. A real stopgap, in the wake of what was done at the time with Ultimate STORM Generations and Revolution, waiting for the inevitable video game adaptation of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations to finally take shape.

While on the one hand we understand and appreciate Bandai Namco's decision to bring Tales of Symphonia to as many platforms as possible, in order to allow new generations to (re)discover one of the most important chapters of the franchise, on the other hand we strongly believe that such a lazy remastering is not the most effective (nor the most respectful) method to re-propose a great classic of the past and celebrate its twentieth anniversary. Except for the Switch version, which for its part can leverage portability, if you have a PlayStation 3 or in any case a gaming PC there is not a single reason why you could prefer the new remastered to the package entitled Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, which in addition to the base game also included its direct sequel. In short, this second remasterd is indicated only to anyone who does not have the aforementioned platforms and to those who wish to use them in handheld.

Shadow Labyrinth is undoubtedly an interesting experiment, starting from an idea we'd like to see explored more often: thoughtfully modernizing a past title, reviving the key ideas that led to its creation but incorporating them into a modern framework. It's a shame the execution isn't the best: beneath the pleasant nods to Bandai Namco's history lies a derivative Metroidvania, reminiscent of a bygone era. On one hand we have a team that has always sacrificed interactivity in the name of a cinematic experience, on the other hand there is an online video game that has never made an effort to tell a real story: the meeting between these two extreme visions of the medium has given life to a strange hybrid with a fully Supermassive gameplay structure, chock-full of references to Behaviour's work but narratively lean and devoid of the fun thrills that we would have expected from the team of Until Dawn and The Quarry. Completely devoted to exploring the lore of Dead by Daylight, The Casting of Frank Stone forgets to lay out a plot that can intrigue its audience, bringing on stage a narration castrated by serious problems of pacing and a horror factor that is slow to arrive, despite the short duration of the experience.
