Deliver Us Mars explores what it means to struggle against extinction, and the hope of fixing a dying planet. It’s a story of fear, and how it manifests into hope within some, and wrath within others. It’s a short but certainly sweet narrative adventure into the stars with some casual yet amusing puzzles to help break up the flow of gameplay.

Deliver Us The Moon was an excellent first step in living up to that mission statement and releasing a sci-fi game not to be forgotten anytime soon. Now, Deliver Us Mars builds from that success with far greater ambition in mind. Yet even with its sights set on new, lofty heights, outside of a few technical hiccups, it undoubtedly manages to stick the landing against all odds. It’s an absolute must-play for fans of the genre and the future couldn’t be brighter for the team of overachieving indie devs in the Netherlands.

Deliver Us Mars, the latest Deetman brothers project, channels the same heart that started beating in Deliver Us The Moon, even if it takes a great deal more effort to get to it. You need to slog through some cumbersome and at times downright frustrating gameplay, but I promise you the premise and ending make it worth your while.

A sequel that’s put in the work to expand its predecessor’s horizons is commendable, but for Deliver Us Mars this doesn’t always work out perfectly. Still, it offers another thrilling adventure for deep-space explorers, with welcome character moments that make it a little less solitary this time around.

Deliver Us Mars’ protagonists quickly cobble together a space shuttle that barely manages to get them to their destination. A similar story feels true of this game. A gripping narrative fuels gameplay that otherwise feels functional but underbaked, making my time on the planet a mixed bag. Deliver Us Mars shines best when it lets you absorb its story, but expect to stumble over several design craters along the way.

Deliver Us Mars delivers a thoughtful, poignant story with deep characters, pretty landscapes, and well-done puzzles. However, there are always two sides to every coin. The linearity didn’t do the environments justice, the puzzles felt too sparse and easy, and the character animations were much too odd.

Those who played Deliver Us the Moon may find something more to love here, but I had a hard time coming back to the Red Planet between sessions. Knowing I would spend my time with bland characters only to walk around empty space stations before being sucked back into the narrative melodrama ultimately proved as cold as the vacuum of space.

Yes the game can improve on some early glitches, but people, it's an indie game, with a very low budget compared to AAA. This is absolutely a masterpiece, it builds upon its strengths of its predecessor, its an important story to be told and I can't wait for more games of this dev. Expand

    Bad-
Slow, largely uninteresting gameplay loop; Climbing sections are clunky and laborious; Loads of visual and technical issues.

    Thoughts-
In the end, what we get is an inconsistent experience that has just as many clear strengths as it has glaring weaknesses. If you’re looking for a captivating story that is expertly told and populated by well-written and well-acted characters, Deliver Us Mars will hit just the spot for you. In the process, however, you’ll have to tolerate and look past several flaws. Clunky movement, slow and often uninteresting gameplay, visuals that are best described as rough around the edges, a barrage of technical issues- and that’s just scratching the surface. Would I still recommend the game? I would- but at the same time, I’d warn you to be patient and prepare for plenty of frustration along the way.

Half baked, frame rate drops, very noticeable pop in, facial textures are poor, very disappointing after deliver us the moon.

Poor and disappointing after Deliver Us the Moon which was great. Really bad frame rate and lag on PS5 is inexcusable. Poor facial modellingPoor and disappointing after Deliver Us the Moon which was great. Really bad frame rate and lag on PS5 is inexcusable. Poor facial modelling (poor even for PS4 frankly) and voice sync also let it down even though the voice acting itself is decent, though not great. There is also a lack of basic attention to detail - I know it's not AAA, but at least make the effort to have a lunar module leave surface tracks in a cinematic (that's just one of many examples of lazy execution). The character building is also clumsily handled and ultimately meant I didn't much like anyone. I also found the hologram and splitter puzzles just plain annoying. In the end after really looking forward to this game after "moon' I quit about 1/4 of the way in. Big disappointment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first game, Deliver Us the Moon. I actually really enjoyed the game play of the second game at the beginning. Was even going to try to platinum the game. Made it to chapter 4 and the first big climbing section and that killed the game. After spending an hour trying to climb down with the unresponsive controls, I have given up on platinum... and still could not manage to get my character down the cliff. Holding L2 and R2 on controller makes you stab both picks into the wall to cling to it. Well, if you drop and try to hang back on, there's a huge chance the game doesn't even register you hitting L2 and R2 and doesn't even make a stabbing animation. You just die, repeatedly. I understand you need room to slide, to dig your picks in to catch yourself. But it doesn't work consistently. And you have to do this a lot. And apparently it gets worse later on. Thanks a lot for ruining what was a fun game, pick axes. Up to this point the story and dialogue and voice acting were great. I just wanted to finish the story. If you can't beat it, just delete it. :D Expand
