Having moved from 2D platformer to top-down adventure game, Yacht Club Games has gone from strength to strength to deliver a game that has completely taken over my spare time, and keeps dragging me back to explore more of The Tenebrous Isle. Make no mistake, Mina The Hollower is no hollow victory, it’s something truly special.

If Yacht Club Games was aiming for the skies with Shovel Knight and its expansions, then they reached the moon with Mina the Hollower. One of the greatest 2D Action Adventure games ever created.

Mina the Hollower shines in its building of a detailed, complex world that rewards the attentive gaze of explorers with pleasant surprises and benefits. However, its many difficulty modifiers don't help much for those who have trouble figuring out the paths, since the game's main issue is the lack of a useful map. This demanding and meticulously crafted adventure may end up dividing the audience, pleasing those who find satisfaction in exploring and progressing on their own and alienating those who prefer a more directed and convenient experience.

Yacht Club Games may have taken their time to deliver their newest game after the excellent Shovel Knight, but the wait was certainly worth it. If Hollow Knight: Silksong was the indie game of 2025, then in 2026 Mina the Hollower could very well claim that title for itself. Its unapologetically 8-bit visuals, brought to life with remarkable detail and personality, are half of its charm. The other half lies in its excellent compact world, densely packed with secrets that make exploration a constant joy and form the heart of this wholly enjoyable, nostalgic, yet thoroughly modern experience.

Coming in with high expectations, Mina the Hollower's tiny mouse masterfully fills some mighty big shoes. Needless to say, Yacht Club Games has another hit on its hands.

Mina the Hollower is a good game for people who love the idea of mixing Zelda with Dark Souls. Unfortunately, if you don't fully love what that entails, I don't think it will win you over as much as others. For some, they will find the combat challenging in a good way, with a world you can get lost in. Others will see a series of roadblocks thrown in the player's face as they try to navigate those problems. Regardless of if you think the sum of its parts makes a masterpiece or not, Mina the Hollower was clearly crafted with a lot of passion and care.
