Escape From Duckov transforms the intensity of extraction shooters into a brilliant and surprisingly solid parody. Behind the ironic nature of armed ducks lies mature, well-balanced gameplay, capable of blending accessibility and tension, lightheartedness and constant stimulation. The loop between raids, extraction, and progression works brilliantly, aided by a pace you're solely responsible for and a refined technical package. If you can't live without competing against other players or don't like the idea of grinding in the later stages, it might leave a bitter aftertaste, but it remains a fresh, intelligent, and characterful experience, recommended for everyone, especially anyone drawn to extraction games but steers clear of them due to the PvP component.- The Games Machine

Overall, Pillars of Eternity on PlayStation 4 is a good porting of an excellent RPG, very complex and deep. It's a tip of the hat to a certain genre of games, and someone could be disappointed by this old-school approach, but it will definitely win the hearts of the adventurers looking for some heavy stuff.- The Games Machine

I like to think that Phoenix Springs is what happens when talented people who do not work in the video game industry decide to create a video game, without knowing or following patterns and rules that we now consider axioms. Botany Manor is a dense and emotionally charged work, designed to bring the player to live in the shoes of Arabella, a young woman who rediscovers her career, finding her own affections. Mediterranea Inferno, from a gameplay point of view, is a solid visual novel in which the choices left in the hands of the player lead to radical turns, really giving the impression of being in control of events. However, the quality of the writing and the ability of its young author to deal with complex and multifaceted themes with great maturity, awareness, and courage in taking clear-cut positions (which should be common ground in 2023, but that's another matter) should be even more emphasized.- The Games Machine

Aliens: Dark Descent is a more than good real-time tactician, who manages to find the right balance between the proficiency in the marine weapons trade and the need to play smart and avoid confrontations when possible. In short, definitely a game that manages to respect the atmospheres that one would expect to encounter in the narrative universe popularized by Ridley Scott and James Cameron.- The Games Machine

An excellent job of renovation and gameplay modernization for one of the finest horror games of the PlayStation 2 era. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake takes the original title and brings it into the modern age through targeted gameplay enhancements, new storylines, and top-tier audio-visual production—all of which bode well for the future of the franchise. Minor technical and balance issues persist, but we are confident that these will be largely resolved through post-launch updates.- The Games Machine

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a metroidvania with art direction reminiscent of 1990s handheld games and a huge map packed with puzzles, secrets, and backtracking. The system of upgrading via contracts is original and introduces significant strategic choices, while yoyo tricks offer a variety of approaches to exploration and combat. The level design is precise and the badges allow you to deeply customize your play style. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does everything it has to do in the best possible way. Or rather, almost everything: unfortunately the plot is negligible and the characters have the same charisma as a puddle. Beyond this, however, the structure of the semi-open world is very complex, the combat system is much deeper than the average of the genre, and the platforming borders on excellence. A return in style for one of the most beloved franchises of all time.- The Games Machine

As a longtime fan of rhythm games, Rhythm Doctor was a pleasant surprise. It strikes an effective balance between a charming, playful tone and a strict, unforgiving design built around precision timing. The controls are as simple and immediate as they come, supported by a strong selection of songs and musical styles, and a light but engaging story mode. The intentionally quirky pseudo-pixel art look feels somewhat unnecessary and disconnected, yet remains oddly appealing. With extensive options, a solid level editor, and a very active community creating custom songs, Rhythm Doctor offers impressive longevity for players willing to embrace its demanding nature.- The Games Machine

Star Ocean The Second Story R is a superb remake that improves the original game all round, making the most beloved chapter of the famous tri-Ace series current again. Black Myth: Wukong is a video game with a brilliant and well-composed combat system, full of facets and things to see. It could very well be a new yardstick for the action genre, even if the inexperience of the team in some respects, also due to the amount of bosses within it, leads to being less enthusiastic than usual. Game Science's video game is usual, really solid, much more than I would have expected. Darktide would have deserved a better score, because the game itself is good, real good. But poor optimization (not entirely justified by the game’s looks), far too common game crashes, and a loot economy that cannot help but raise some eyebrows end up impacting the user experience. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a good second chapter but those who expected a sequel better than the predecessor may be slightly disappointed. Unfortunately, in the face of many well-structured innovations related to the fighting styles and puzzles scattered in the game worlds, there are also some far from negligible smudges such as a plot all too devoted to fanservice and an excessive amount of secondary content. However, the one packaged by Respawn and Electronic Arts is a more than satisfactory action video game, with solid gameplay and a first-rate artistic / graphic sector.- The Games Machine

With the launch of Yakuza 6: Song of Life, the saga of Kazuma Kiryu reaches its conclusion on PC and Xbox as well. The two years that passed since its launch on Sony consoles has provided it with technical improvements that, especially on PC, made the game’s visuals more in line with the times. Rematch is a serious candidate to be the Rocket League of this decade. Beyond the obvious similarities (more obvious once you pick up the controller) it is finally a different take on football than EA FC, closer to the real experience that a footballer can live but without forgetting the ludo thanks to the blatantly arcade approach of some gameplay ideas. CYGNI: All Guns Blazing aims to be a vertical-scrolling shoot'em up tied to the old traditions of the genre, taking advantage of what hardware has made possible over the last four decades. The Surge 2 is frantic, punishing and moderately performing, to the point of entering in the ranking of the best soulslike. The flaws are there, but this new adventure will know how to get you right.- The Games Machine

Star Wars Outlaws might have a gameplay that is occasionally rough and five dozens of different upgrade materials, but it makes up for any flaw with its excellent characters, a main story that always pushes you to look for the next chapter, and an unabashed love for the setting.- The Games Machine

An excellent point and click adventure, filled with humour and banter about time travel, with the same care in the production we loved in the previous episodes.- The Games Machine

SUPERHOT is an FPS based on a simple, yet brilliant idea: time moves only when the player moves. The gameplay mixes speed and strategy, with the bonus of a brilliant story. It falls a little short of duration, but in the few hours needed to reach the end, you'll be truly entertained.- The Games Machine

In recent years, the old-school FPS genre has been undergoing a kind of rebirth; and if the results are games like Prodeus, we should be glad it has. Solid gunplay, excellent soundtrack, and graphics that might be old-school, but never feel dated: this is an excellent debut for Bounding Box Games. Granted, it’s not flawless and the checkpoint system especially raises some eyebrows, but Produes is definitely a game worth checking out if you’re into old-school FPSs. And even if you’re not, honestly.- The Games Machine

A fantasy FPS not very original in terms of storytelling and themes but still fun, fairly challenging and technically appreciable. The combat system based on the use of three different types of magic and a fair variety of customizations make for a solid and well-balanced experience.- The Games Machine

Madden 17 is a football game that speaks to everyone, pleases most and delights the hardcore fans. It doesn't shine for its technical prowess or for the presence of new ideas, but everything works just great, and the new Play the Moment feature lays the foundation for a bright future for the series.- The Games Machine

Mix the madness of a blind date, the unknown of returning home and the slipper on your mother's teeth, and you get Thirsty Suitors, a video game that overturns the rules and follows its own vision, defining with awareness and maturity an enveloping and engaging game design. It is above all strong in game design that mixes with real life events and a number of events that follow one another, nevertheless outlining an extremely scholastic exploration. Worth a try if you are in a mid-life crisis (now in your thirties), if you have lots or lots of exes ready to take revenge and if, in a certain sense, you have finished Alan Wake 2 or any other work published in the last six months. In that case, you would understand why someone left you.- The Games Machine

The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a fascinating interactive thriller that manages to treat extremely delicate issues such as suicide, depression, and love with extraordinary tact. The writing is always on point, even if near the end of the adventure the events appear perhaps a bit rushed. In any case, the game developed by One-O-One Games manages to leave its mark by making us, the players, think about the consequences of our actions in other people’s lives.- The Games Machine

We cannot deny that Far Cry 5 is another "more of the same" entry, warts and all, but the religious fanatic setting is spot-on, and Montana is simply wonderful (and Joseph Seed is one of the best villains the series has ever had). The open-world approach to the game works as usual, and the more you look at it as a big, sumptuous playground, the better. The Arcade mode has a lot, plenty of potential that will show its best in the upcoming weeks and months, when the community starts toying with the powerful editor. Even as it is now, Far Cry 5 is an excellent chapter in the series.- The Games Machine

Windjammers 2 is the triumph of Dotemu's playability and dedication: the arcade spirit of the past lives again in a sequel that is philologically irreproachable and has a great personality. A very good result, that could be further improved with a greater emphasis on the single player aspect.- The Games Machine

Tom Clancy's The Division: Survival does exactly what it promises, throwing players into a struggle to stay alive. The rules are well designed, and the (small) compromises only serve to connect the DLC to the rest of the game. Well done.- The Games Machine

I was skeptical about a Switch release of NieR Automata, a game Square Enix was unable to get run smoothly on PC. But somehow Virtuos achieved a miracle, making possible to be 2B even on the Nintendo hybrid. I was expecting a Waterloo-like disaster. The outcome instead is Austerlitz.- The Games Machine

Escape from Tarkov is a solid extraction shooter born in 2017. Despite its technical limitations and uneven balance, version 1.0 confirms it as a unique, intense, and persistently engaging hardcore tactical FPS. It's not for everyone, but that's precisely what makes it special.- The Games Machine

The developers of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon define it as a love letter to open world RPGs as if the game were just a tribute to the cornerstones of the genre such as Skyrim or Oblivion, when in reality we are faced with a production with great personality, spectacular from an artistic point of view and with a plot intricate enough to glue us to the monitor for a long time. The gameplay does not aim to revolutionize the genre, but offers everything you could want from a modern RPG, reinterpreting the story of King Arthur in a dark key and full of exciting combat.- The Games Machine

Total War: Three Kingdoms collects the legacy of the previous chapters related to the Warhammer universe, presenting many noteworthy innovations that show how that formula can also be applied in a historical context. There are also some good new mechanics on the espionage and diplomacy side, too bad that the artificial intelligence hasn’t been retouched accordingly, representing once again the weakest part of the entire offer.- The Games Machine

The Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection is a more ambitious undertaking than its source material might suggest. Not every element works equally well—some aesthetic choices remain questionable—but the work invested on the technical and structural fronts demonstrates a clear intent: not merely to preserve these games, but to bring them back into circulation in a form that remains relevant today. In this context, the RE Engine serves not merely as a container, but as a tool that compels a reinterpretation. And even when friction arises, it is precisely within that tension between fidelity and transformation that the collection discovers its true identity.- The Games Machine

It’s difficult to improve a game which is already the best in its own genre, but SIE San Diego Studio achieved a good result with a few, but meaningful, changes. MLB The Show 18 offers an even more solid and consistent experience than its predecessor, although the devs cut off a couple of game modes. The new most important core element is the brand new progression system in the Road to the Show career, which offers the chance to live the tough dream of a mid- to late-round draft pick prospect.- The Games Machine

Swordship is a great example of contemporary arcade. It does one thing, it does it well, and it's incredibly fulfilling, challenging, and exhilarating. Smugglers of the post-climate change future against corporations, pirates at the service of the least, always ready to take risks and with a great sense of entertainment. Great management of the risk / benefit component, precise controls, audiovisual remarkable, with each game over generating more sense of revenge than frustration. A truly remarkable work in its compactness.- The Games Machine
