This third chapter pales out, however, due to the absence of the 3D effect and multiplayer mode and comparatively, it offers less content than the other titles of the series. It still provides a good basis to explore some groundbreaking NES games, but it could certainly use more ambition.

Brutus & Futée has gameplay mechanics which recall other times and which can be a breath of fresh air, not to mention its attractive artwork. Unfortunately, the game’s short lifespan and trial-and-error moments harm what could be a much more enjoyable experience.

Oceanhorn: Monster of the Uncharted Seas is an adventure game that knows what it wants and is not ashamed to go just for it. Clearly influenced by its mentors, Oceanhorn brings forth an accessible, simple and fluid plot which could work even better as a game, were it not for some frustrating gameplay mechanics at the protagonist's level.

Kirby Star Allies is a good landmark for the series, as it provides a whole set of elements that fans of the iconic Nintendo character will appreciate, including the unavoidable ability to copy an enemy's ability. Where Star Allies falls behind is on its exaggerated simplification, which feels too lenient even by the Kirby standards and ends up harming the experience of what should be a more enjoyable game.

Pier Solar and the Great Architects is a welcome effort of creating a piece of work in the contemporary age that follows a format of the mid-1990s. Its narrative is well structured and the visual interface is very appealing, but the game also suffers from several technical flaws and its combat system quickly becomes repetitive and tedious.

Super Rocket Shootout has a surprising concept that works in a way that's competent enough, despite its lack of a much needed online multiplayer mode. Thanks to a plot that's filled with humour, to a simple but addictive local multiplayer and to an overall gameplay that is rewarding and free of unnecessary difficulties, Super Rocket Shootout could really benefit from doing away with its compulsory tutorial mode and with a longer lifespan.

By putting the player in the place of the villain, many of gaming's usual conventions are seen in a different light. Unfortunately the game's level design is so linear and unadventurous that it ends up harming the experience more than it should, and its exaggeratedly difficult jumping doesn't let this promising work rise above a mid-level threshold.

Shock Troopers is a classic that will resonate with the players who have a big case of nostalgia for this game. It keeps up with the test of time when played on its two-player mode but beyond that, some of its gameplay feels anachronistic and stands in the way of making it a more enjoyable classic to most players beyond the circle of connoisseurs who know what they are getting.

Legna Tactica follows all the conventions of a tactical/strategy RPG and does this job well enough. It also refuses to go further and falls into a corner where it ticks the essential boxes but doesn't stand out in any other way due to its uninteresting plot, unimaginative artwork and overall lack of originality. Legna Tactica could go beyond and build on what it already does well but as it is, it falls below expectations.

My Girlfriend is a Mermaid?! goes along the visual novel conventions but doesn't dare to try anything groundbreaking or that would allow it to stand out among its peers. As such, the game features good examples of character animation and soundtrack but its humour gets repetitive too quickly and the protagonists are not as attractive as fans of visual novels would expect them to be.

Heart Beaten is a hilarious, simple and addictive experience, similar to WarioWare in the sense that it is based around wacky minigames...and it all ends quickly, as there are only fifteen such minigames and once they are cleared, the game pretty much becomes redundant.

Titan Quest does not represent the pinnacle of action RPG and this remastered version for the Nintendo Switch shows its twelve years of age, even if its gameplay remains fairly interesting. While sometimes its content in terms of objects and weapons feels too much, its local and online multiplayer modes are an added value. On the downside, the game feels too repetitive and its outdated visual component becomes a handicap.

Shows its limits early on, with its rather repetitive combat, a level structure that needs improvement and the mixing of different graphic styles did not come out too well, but while those not interested in the genre should look the other way, any River City fan will be more than satisfied with this reincarnation of the thirty-year-old series.

While the puzzles are certainly interesting and the level editor is an added value, there's very little to add to the experience and this ends up looking like an uninteresting effort when compared to the original.

Sky Force Anniversary features some of the elements that are most appreciated by shoot'em up fans and adds to that an accessible gameplay and an interesting visual environment. It does less well when it comes to its content, which feels short and repetitive, and it doesn't pass the challenge of standing up to another game of the same series, also made available in the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Half Past Fate on the Nintendo Switch brings a good mix of a marvelous visual environment and a funny plot which will find a good place with fans of romantic comedies. Other players might find it less appealing, and the game's short lifespan and rather high retail price is more likely to put them off.
