Spellbreak is the perfect example of a great game let down by lacklustre performance on the Nintendo Switch. Unique gameplay mechanics aside, being often unable to play the game due to technical issues limits any potential enjoyment to be found.

Mythic Ocean is a fun little adventure with a strong narrative and memorable characters, but it ends before it has a chance to really leave an impact on you.

Dezatopia provides intense, adrenaline-pumped gameplay with intelligent combat tactics and plenty of replayability. Supported by vibrant visuals and a blistering soundtrack, it’s a killer title worth the attention of any genre fan.

Run the Fan is a surprising little gem of a quick-thinking interactive puzzle game. Whilst it might leave you wanting more, you’ll certainly feel that your brain has had a decent workout.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions takes arcade football and puts a new spin on it, resulting in fun, frantic and frustrating gameplay. When the final whistle blows though, that marvellous manga magic makes it easier to forgive its shortcomings.

Membrane is a physics-based psychedelic puzzle-plaformer that is great fun to play. Offering an interesting mechanic and gameplay that is challenging but never too tough, fans of the genre will be sure to enjoy this one!

3,000th Duel doesn’t do a lot new for the Souls-like Metroidvania hybrid genre, but its satisfying combat and various customisation options make for an enjoyable experience which makes up for a lot of its familiarity.

Golf With Your Friends might not be the ultimate multiplayer golf experience but there is still enough variety here to have a good time. Even when playing single player the intricate courses will keep you entertained.

Everything rejects everything that you’d usually consider a video game. Yet this interactive experience is coherent in its mission of providing existential exploration and gets pretty close to its promise of allowing you to control everything; even a hat.

Miitopia is an RPG adventure that uses Miis as a way to let players express themselves. Despite choosing to simplify some of the classic mechanics, it does offer goofy and funny moments for those willing to pay its increased price.

Under its early bird sale price, Robonauts is one that you should pick up. The developers should consider retaining its initial price point as it looks to stand out in a sea of quality Switch indie titles hitting the system at the moment, but if you do want that hard-hitting, swear-inducing arcade shooter that just about everyone loves, you'd be doing yourself a favour in checking Robonauts out.

Samurai Aces is a solid shmup that is sure to please fans of the genre. Personally, the game felt a bit too similar to previous title Gunbird - but then again, why fix what isn't broken? If you're after fast-paced, intense gameplay, look no further.

It's still running on a custom engine which means that whilst it lacks some of the features of other FIFA 19 variants, improvements over last year's edition on the Switch are very welcome and noticeable, offering a great experience. Arguably the BEST handheld football title yet. If you don't own FIFA 18 and want a football game, then this is for you.

The Dragon’s Lair trilogy is a nicely packaged version of Don Bluth’s classic animated games. Functionally they are better than they’ve ever been, but the gameplay will not be for everyone. It is, though, the best way to experience a piece of video game history.

If you're not among the faint-hearted, download Butcher. It'll test your wits, reflexes and ability to stomach some gore, and is easy to pick up and get stuck into from the start. If you get frustrated at games being too hard, though, perhaps it's worth sharpening those reflexes elsewhere before taking Butcher on.

Aspire: Ina’s Tale is easy on the eyes and ears, but a little harder on the hands. A short and sweet little puzzle platformer, while it doesn’t present a challenge, the art and soundtrack are worth sticking around for.

Overall, Cruis’n Blast is a simple and light-hearted arcade racer that, had it not been for the heavily scripted AI, would be a ton of fun to play. Unfortunately, this overrules all features in the game and leaves it feeling unfair and frustrating.

Just like a terrible movie you can’t stop laughing at, Deadly Premonition is entertaining in all the ways it was not intended to be. Most of its elements are poor, but the culmination of all those terrible elements makes for a surprisingly entertaining experience.

Time Recoil is a quick-paced, enjoyable shooter-come-puzzler, which has plenty to keep players entertained. It's not quite a unique entity in the Switch eShop, which has a number of other games from the same genre, but it's definitely worth a play if you've got the funds for it.

Put on your dancing shoes ’cause Just Dance 2021 is here to show you how to move. With superb visuals and varied choreography, it’s only a lack of online play and a limited core song list that hold it back.

Redout offers some very challenging, fast-paced gameplay, as well as content that will keep you busy for weeks. Just watch out for those muddy visuals and don’t hold your breath for an active online scene.

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX is a disappointing package made worse by its presence on the Switch. The main gimmick has lost all its wonder and both games feel like the exact same experience, roughly slapped together by uninteresting and sparse gameplay.

Despite its rough presentation, Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World is a complex town-building game that manages to incorporate different elements from the Atelier series into a satisfying experience.

Absolute Drift: Zen Edition is easy to pick up, but can be tricky to master. Once you get the hang of the drifting, there is plenty of enjoyment to be had with high scores to chase, even without an online multiplayer component.

With online still to come, there's a bit more that Hammerwatch has to offer in the future. But I just couldn't take enough charm or personality from the game to make it stand out, especially when that eShop to-play list just keeps on growing...

A high launch price and a lack of online multiplayer mar what is an otherwise enjoyable local multiplayer romp. If you have loads of friends locally then Stikbold - A Dodgeball Adventure is certain to bring laughs, at least until the next great local multiplayer game comes along.

Things are just a little too repetitive here for a recommendation. For what it's worth, Gunhouse does offer some fun, but it's not the sort of earth-shattering experience to fork out your extra dosh to have it on Switch.

Though it appears to be an simplistic shooter, Hyper Sentinel really takes the fun parts out of any shmup and brings a fast, entertaining game. If you're not a fan of the genre, the straight-up approach to shooting aliens may struggle to maintain your interest over time. However, casual and hardcore fans will discover a challenging and insanely fun shooter.

Die For Valhalla! is a nice evolution of what 2D side-scrollers can be. Mixing in frantic action, charming visuals, and some surprisingly flexible approaches to action that always looks great and feels satisfying.

What The Fall offers in story and atmosphere is a little let down by some clunky controls. It's an enjoyable exploration which will be lengthened by some difficult puzzles if you don't use a guide, so by all means go for it if you didn't try it on Wii U.

Its single player may be repetitive, but as a local multiplayer game, Super Volley Blast is accessible sports fun with a surprisingly deep character customisation system, utilised hilariously by the developer. If only the actual gameplay had the same depth.

If you can power through the dull and repetitive design of God Wars: The Complete Legend you'll find plenty of content. Sadly, this doesn't make up for otherwise lackluster title.

Joggernauts is a colourful adventure which will require a great deal of patience at times, but stick with it and you'll find a fun and accessible experience which you can enjoy with a group of friends. An ideal party game!

My Hero One’s Justice is an incredibly feature-rich tie-in to the popular My Hero Academia manga series. Its take on the anime 3D arena fighter is adorned with explosive battles, though is blemished with technical issues.

The thrill of conquering a rogue-like is found here in SKYHILL. It does rely on luck and randomisation a little too heavily, but it will still leave you saying “just one more run” before too long.

The Mooseman has its own distinct style but leaves something to be desired on the gameplay and fun front. It’s a handy educational resource, but not as great as a game.

DISTRAINT: Deluxe Edition offers great story and perfectly crafted ambiance, regardless of it’s short run-time. Although it drags in the middle with questionable mechanics it is still a unique take on the point-and-click adventure genre.

Tower of Babel – no mercy is a fun party game with friends for a short while, but then everything becomes very repetitive. With little in terms of variation between its modes, you’re not likely to be playing this for very long.

7th Sector is a single-player puzzler set in a dystopian future. As well as stunning pixel art, haunting soundscapes and satisfying puzzles, the game also treats players to a disturbing narrative. A challenging title worth the brain power.

Voxelgram is a very playable take on the Picross phenomenon and its twist gives some highly attractive results. However, the game inevitably sacrifices some of its playability with the jump into that third dimension and the control challenge that emerges.

Balancing a 50/50 between overly simple indie and pro skater itself, Skate City doesn’t offer anything we haven’t seen before. However, its intuitive controls, presentation, and overall flow of gameplay make it endlessly replayable.

On first impressions, Sheepo is a welcoming, inventive Metroidvania with slick aesthetics. But its stark environments and lack of combat result in a rather empty world which does little to establish the game in a sea of able competitors.

Those craving a slightly more mainstream take on the classic point-and-click adventure games of old will have a good time with Beyond a Steel Sky. It doesn’t outright amaze, but is no doubt a solid piece of sci-fi made playable.

Greak: Memories of Azur is a fine example of a 2D platformer on Nintendo Switch, with beautiful aesthetics and some interesting takes on gameplay. It’s let down by its lack of cooperative play and simplistic combat.

Sine Mora Ex provides a forgiving entry point for those wanting to get into shmup’s, but also has plenty of challenges waiting for you when you’re ready. The game is a visual treat on the Switch and has some of the narrative hallmarks one would expect from a Grasshopper Manufacture game. There might not be a considerable amount of depth, but you won’t feel like you’ve wasted your time, the only time you’ll be losing is to the time travel machinations of Sine Mora.

Glyph styles itself as one type of genre but desperately wants to be thought of as another. This jamboree of various platforming ideas never quite works, even if some players might find joy in its tranquil collectible hunting.

Although this is not the complete Turrican story, there are nevertheless four extremely playable arcade platform shooters in this collection. Turrican is an iconic 90s series that fits the Switch like a glove.

While the core of Mario Golf is fantastic as always, there’s very little around it with Super Rush in either content or variety to keep players entertained. If you want to play a few holes with friends then this is everything you need, but anyone hoping to be blown away by new modes will find this latest release to be sadly just par for the course.

140 is a rhythm-based platformer in which the player controls a geometric shape as it travels through two-dimensional levels that shift in time to the underlying soundtrack. A joy to play, the game is a masterclass in rhythm-based game design.

Remembered perhaps even more fondly than The Phantom Menace itself by some fans, Star Wars Episode I: Racer is as fun as you recall. While some difficulty issues can arise, Aspyr has done a fantastic job bringing that exhilarating, break-neck speed action back to Nintendo hardware.

Romancing Saga 2 is a game very much trapped in the early 90s, while it’s great to see a title translated into English after all this time, it’s a shame that it’s one that offers very little fun or entertainment.

The Tropico series was long overdue on Nintendo systems, and Tropico 6 is a stellar example. While it’s a little overcomplicated and unexplained in places, it’s a super deep and satisfying experience. No recount needed here.

Simplistic and fun, Inversus Deluxe is definitely worth checking out, it's easy to learn and hard to master gameplay will keep you hooked as you go back to better your own or your friends' high scores. Multiplayer is also a riot, especially in a 2v2 environment.

RICO won’t blow your mind with a gripping story, complicated characters and a questionable love triangle. What does do is provide a grab ‘n’ go title that’s fun to blast through with a friend on and offline with enough to keep you going for a decent amount of time.

Evergate is a precision puzzle platformer which looks beautiful and sounds fantastic. Although the controls take some getting used to, the intricately designed levels provide a wealth of challenge, and the power-up system offers many different ways to play.

As part 2 of a trilogy, The Fall 2: Unbound is not afraid to mix things up from the original. It keeps the core interface from the original while redesigning itself into something new. Come for the puzzles and stay for the emotion. I cannot wait to see how the story ends.

Witcheye is a game that feels incredibly familiar yet fresh at the same time. The reinvention of movement, the attention to detail, and the clever role reversal make this 2D retro platformer so good; it’s witchcraft.

The Legend of Evil is a fantastic indie title to sink your teeth into. With gorgeous graphics, an upbeat soundtrack and some very, very challenging levels, there is plenty of content to keep you entertained. Some levels may take a few tries to successfully overcome, but the feeling of satisfaction at slaughtering the masses cannot be beaten.

Remnant: From The Ashes is a brilliant co-op shooter that takes elements of Dark Souls and combines them with other elements to create something fresh. It will occupy you for dozens of hours and frustrate you beyond belief, but it sure is worth it.

The Survivalists is a classic endurance adventure with tried and tested elements, accompanied by a defining mechanic that, sadly, could be better implemented. But it’s still great fun and fans of management sandbox games are well catered for.

Disappointing performance issues and an overall dated design make it a harder sell for new players, but Republic Commando’s unique, exhilarating Star Wars campaign is still a ton of fun in 2021, and one that nostalgic fans will get a kick out of alongside the Bad Batch animated series.

Warsaw provides a unique – and honestly bleak – perspective of a dark time in our collective history. Difficult enough to prove a worthy challenge, with an over-complexity that might have benefitted from a little self-restraint.

R-Type Final 2 is a bombastic if relatively safe continuation of the horizontal side-scrolling shoot-em-up. It has visual flair in spades and packs in plenty of customisation options, both of which make blasting away endless enemy waves fun.

A Night at the Races is a challenging arcade platformer that will put your fine motor skills to the test. If you’re a fan of the genre, definitely pick this one up as the story is quite juicy.

This is a card game aimed at Dragon Ball diehards, with enough depth, creativity and fan service to keep the fans entertained. It does suffer visually, and those not into the series may want to give this one a miss.

Moon Hunters is more than the retro-styled action game that screenshots would lead you to believe, but it is also less than the personality test RPG that it sets out to be. A fun evening with friends could be had, but don’t expect to find a lasting experience.

Even though this Purrfect Edition is a revamped version of the original Hunter’s Legacy, it is still a bit far from being a true perfect material. Nevertheless, even with some rough edges here and there, Hunter’s Legacy still provides an enjoyable metroidvania experience, all thanks to a complex combat and wide upgrade options.

Lamplight City manages to breathe a little bit of new life into a tired genre, enough to keep it interesting, engaging, and surprising over multiple playthroughs.

Come for the combat, stay for the narrative. Omensight: Definitive Edition presents a competent but monotonous hack n’ slash combat style. This title stands out thanks to its mysterious narrative, which always helps in giving a game personality.

Sonic Frontiers manages to blend the speedster’s gameplay with an open-world setting, but it does so in a rather unrefined way. There’s fun to be found in Frontiers’ most exciting moments, but the overall package is lacking polish.

Despite the fairly limited upgrades and occasional flaws, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be found in Cycle 28. Its fast-paced, addictive gameplay will keep you coming back again, and again, and again… Needless to say, the name is apt.

Pathway flexes plenty of stats amongst its RPG elements, but the turn-based combat can become quite repetitive. The presentation is gorgeous however, and there’s plenty of adventuring on offer if it’s the sort of ride you’re looking for.

Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 3 - Vehicle Kit is undoubtedly a clever idea that genuinely works. Sadly, once you've gotten past the actual building stage of the game, you'll find there's precious little to keep you occupied for long.

De Mambo is a game that definitely needs to be played with friends for you to get the most out of it. Although the solo mode is challenging and rather unique on the Switch, it can be beat in a few hours and doesn't offer much in the form of replayability. However, if you add a few friends to the mix and hit up the multiplayer modes you will find hours of fun with this game. With a simple to pick up yet difficult to master set of gameplay mechanics, it's not hard to find yourselves hooked on battling it out; vying to see who can become the De Mambo king (or queen) amongst your local circle of friends.

With the very welcome addition of themed card decks - featuring Ubisoft characters - providing an additional flourish to the game, UNO for Switch is a digital recreation of the popular card game, which is all you can ask for.

The Wardrobe is a genuinely funny entry to the point-and-click adventure genre. Whilst the puzzles can prove to be a bit frustrating, its visuals and plot make this a worthwhile purchase.

A Hole New World is a decent enough retro platforming experience, but it’s short, and doesn’t stand out from the pack. The First Press Games collector’s edition looks tasty, though.

While the ingredients for a compelling roguelite are here, Lone Ruin opts for a straightforward roguelike experience that shines a spotlight on its relative lack of content. Shame, because it is fun and if they’d given me a reason to keep playing it, I would have.

Ever wish you could bring a memory back to life? Tokyo RPG Factory has transplanted the essence of Chrono Trigger and other classic SNES JRPGs into a beautiful modern engine to revivify the Active Time Battle system for a new generation of players in the form of Lost Sphear.

There’s not much meat to the bones of this zombie-infested adventure, but World War Z—more fun than fear—manages to offer a neat range of multiplayer gaming options and a competent single player campaign.

Raji: An Ancient Epic is a beautiful adventure unlike anything we’ve likely seen in video games, let alone the Switch. The gameplay itself is of a strong if unspectacular standard, but it’s the design and the experience which you’re paying for here.

Disco Dodgeball Remix is a fun pick up and play game that does interesting things with a simple core idea, for those looking for some simple fun there's enough on offer here. However an uninteresting progression system means that you're either in this for the love of dodgeball or there wont be much to hold your interest.

Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka with Love is a beautifully executed point-and-click experience that combines a gripping narrative, humourous characters and rich scenes to create an unforgettable espionage adventure. Fans of the point-and-click classics won’t want to miss this one out.

Exploring test chambers and completing mind-bending puzzles never gets old. With a clever, creative and innovative premise, Q.U.B.E. 2 is a first-person puzzle game good enough for you to overlook its shallow narrative and technical flaws.

Wales Interactive continue to deliver on their niche market genre with an engaging plot for this whodunnit murder mystery. Some overacting and the clunky mechanic for the shapeshifting prevent it scoring higher.

ChromaGun successfully utilises colour in unique and creative ways to provide an engaging experience that puzzle aficionados will relish. It could be a bit longer, but as it is, it's a very strong puzzle shooter.

It may not last you until the Summer Games roll around next year, but the homegrown attention-to-detail and retro mode go some way in making Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 a charming package for casual multiplayer fun this holiday.

Football Manager 2019 Touch lets you take any team as high up the league ladder as you can – but it’s clunky and rough around the edges on Switch. FIFA is the preferred option.

Some frustrating camera angles can make Monochrome World somewhat stressful, but getting to roll a cute round pink raindrop shaped like a raccoon makes it all okay. The price is right, so if you like action puzzle games consider this for your collection.

Curious Expedition 2 tells a story full of adventure and intrigue that sustains the game through its short campaign. The repetitive nature of the gameplay soon becomes stale however, offering little reason to extend your expedition beyond the main story.

Kitaria Fables does a lot of things well, and a few things a little less well. It’s cute and colourful, and the adventuring is absorbing, but the farming falls a little flat.

Akane is an alright experience – it handles well, and nailing a good run is always satisfying. But it is very repetitive. The lure of an increased strength boss probably isn’t enough to hold the attention for much longer.

For fans of the anime, Fairy Tail may be the best thing since sliced bread. For JRPG fans who couldn’t care less about the source material, this is just another basic release that fails to do anything remotely interesting.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX looks beautiful in all of its lush hand-drawn glory, but the gameplay is still the same repetitive fare that the series has always offered up. There’s a ton of game here, but that’s if your enthusiasm lasts long enough.

Gynoug is a classic side-scrolling shooter that has only been improved upon with its move to the Switch. However, its unaltered style and gameplay mean that it won’t appeal to everyone, despite some concessions for accessibility.

Fun combat and an intriguing story make Daemon X Machina a great game for fans of mechs. Both visually and audibly striking, the game impresses in a lot of ways, though some of its shine wanes towards the end.

Automachef is a slow and methodical puzzle game that is at times unfriendly due to the lack of tutorial. Nevertheless, it can be quite rewarding to try things yourself and learn all the rules when creating a mind-bending food factory.

Mercenaries Saga Chronicles should be commended for giving Nintendo fans (and Switch owners) the full trilogy to sink their teeth into, rather than picking one of the three games. It's a quality, welcome addition to the eShop.
