A different take on the Metroidvania formula, Shinsekai: Into the Depths creates a suitably aquatic feel, both in its atmosphere and gameplay. At times visuals can look a little washed up, but if you fancy going below sea level, then it’s worth taking the plunge.

At a first glance, Cosmic Star Heroine is a throwback to the JRPGs of the past. With a superb pixel-art style, deep combat system and fast-paced narrative, it becomes much more than a mere homage.

Dying Light: Platinum Edition remains one of the better examples of an open-world zombie game done right. It stands head-and-shoulders above other genre entries thanks to unique traversal and weapon creativity.

Please, Touch The Artwork is a great experience, but it’s not a particularly great game. I found its puzzles fun and serviceable, but not very compelling. The execution is generally sound, except for an inexplicable handheld-only requirement.

Resident Evil Revelations is a great entry in the legendary survival-horror series and a great fit for the Nintendo Switch. The bite-sized chapters make short bursts of play in handheld mode ideal, whilst also translating well to the big screen. Just make sure you don't book any cruise holidays in the near future - it's certainly put me off!

Though it doesn’t break the mold of point-and-click adventure games, and falls into some of the genres trappings, Nelly Cootalot does encapsulate what makes them so fun to play. Fun and entertaining characters really bring the story to life, and the voice acting is superb.

Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos is a game that I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. With an in-depth upgrade system and the perfect mix of adventure and rogue-lite elements, fans of those genres will find themselves at home here.

Eastward may not be perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. The creativity on display is fantastic, and the gameplay is fun and varied. It’s an adventure you won’t be quick to forget.

LEGO City Undercover is an action-packed platformer filled to the brim with secrets and charm. Whilst the series as a whole has evolved - negating how impressive this was back in 2013 - you'll still find plenty to enjoy on its own merit.

ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun is a fantastic title that feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch. If you are looking for an addictive challenge then this is the title for you.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series offers players a nostalgic look at a relatively unknown platformer with a cult following. This is undoubtedly the best way to experience these games, even if they are priced a little too high.

Rain on Your Parade is a quaint game full of bright colours, jokes, and nostalgia. The puzzle variety, level design, and mechanics will deliver hours of entertainment. Who doesn’t like causing a little chaos, now and then? The price is right, too!

Death Squared is a great example of how the Nintendo Switch can bring players together. Hand a friend a Joy-Con and watch the hilarity ensue. Good fun as a single player experience but better with friends, Death Squared mixes challenge with humour in a way that makes it very reminiscent of Portal - and if that isn't reason enough to give this game a look, I don't know what is.

Combining nuanced storytelling with engaging and addictive gameplay, Bugsnax is a real treat through and through. Some technical stumbles aside, this is a title that any fan of games needs to experience for themselves.

Good Job! is another left-field Nintendo idea which offers fun and charming puzzling action. It’s not flawless, with some irritating controls and things having a tendency to find themselves stuck. But it’s certainly worth having.

Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a phenomenal experience, one that I’m not likely to forget anytime soon. The gameplay is simple but the narrative more than makes up for that. An incredibly relatable story that really had me lost for words.

Trials Rising is the latest of the nearly-20 year phenomenon which, unfortunately, proves that less can indeed be more. The addition of the mid-game grind immediately dissuades the player from continuing and, coupled with the Switch version’s shortcomings, only highlights how great we used to have it.

At an attractive price point, the accessible nature of Pic-a-Pix Deluxe makes it the ideal title to show off to the older members of your family as a gateway to the Switch. Addictive puzzling for everyone else makes it a lovely package.

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition is a fantastic hack 'n' slash title that brings together the best of the Legend of Zelda series and the Dynasty Warriors games. With plenty of content, superb performance and phenomenal gameplay, this is a must have title.

Crash Bandicoot is back, and hopefully now for good. The original Naughty Dog trilogy are the best in the series, and not only does this collection see their debut on a Nintendo platform, but it's the best version possible of the games. Willy the Wombat is reborn,and with Vicarious Visions at the helm I now have high hopes for the future, especially considering Crash has become the fastest selling game on Switch in 2018.

It may not do much new, but Depixtion is addictive Picross puzzling. It’s hard to go wrong with Picross, and it’s hard not to recommend this. Especially now that it’s launching on the European eShop, too.

Inmost is tragic, gut-wrenching, and absolutely confronting. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for something that will make you cry, you’ve come to the right place.

PHOGS! is a doggone delight to play! The enchanting music, outstanding visuals, and simple yet dynamic gameplay will keep you entertained for hours. Whether you’re looking for some soothing solo action, or want to go for walkies with an online buddy, PHOGS! will scratch your puzzle platforming itch.

Wingspan is a delightful introduction to American birdlife and complex card games. With beautiful illustrations and cerebral gameplay, it’s one to savour. Hardcore players may find the strategy lacking skill-wise, but this port is an excellent accompaniment to the board game.

Haven is an incredibly zen and cathartic experience that has a genuine human relationship at its core, with combat that expertly manages to match the airy flow of the overall gameplay. It sets an incredibly high bar for quality.

White Rabbit should be commended for the approach to Death’s Gambit: Afterlife. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, a fantastic Souls-like Metroidvania has been born. It deserves to be played for this alone, but thankfully it stands on its own merits too.

Overall, Wavetale is a beautiful example of what a good story can do to a game, regardless of its mechanics. It’s a simple premise, but a good one, however, it’s hard to justify the cost against what you receive.

Graceful Explosion Machine is arguably the go-to arcade game that every Switch owner should definitely consider buying. It mixes pleasing visuals with great gameplay to make it one of the best arcade shooters I've played. You can beat the four worlds in around four hours, but you will find yourself playing these over and over again as you chase down those high scores!

With moreish gameplay, charming characters, more inclusive romance options, updated visuals, and a smattering of quality-of-life improvements, STORY OF SEASONS: Friends of Mineral Town polishes up a definitive farming sim classic to bring it into the modern era.

Tiny Barbarian DX is a lot of fun, uncomplicated, challenging and yet hard to put down. It’s perfectly suited to the Switch in both handheld and TV mode. Whilst it’s not one of the cheapest games available on the Switch it is good value for money in terms of its overall quality and length. I would highly recommending snagging the physical release if you can as you also get some neat extra goodies.

Pawarumi is an enjoyable enough shoot-em-up, but performs poorly on the Switch. Its repetitive artwork, backing audio and narrative sequences make it gripping to play until beaten, at which point, it lacks any replay value.

It's clever, it's impressive and it's undeniably Nintendo. If you have children and a Nintendo Switch - and your children love being creative - then it's hard not to say it's essential. However, despite its undeniable charm, it's very niche, it's expensive and not for everyone.

1979 Revolution Black Friday is uniquely educational, but from a gameplay perspective it can't compete with a modern Telltale release. There's nothing wrong with that if you're jumping in to experience the story, though the performance makes for a weak port.

Flashback is a great game that somehow manages to stand the test of time twenty five years later. The option to adjust the difficulty with the new Modern Mode should allow newcomers to ease into the admittedly brutal gameplay.

Cat Quest II does as any good sequel should, expanding upon the core design of its predecessor whilst also improving things in terms of visuals. Whilst the end result is slightly compromised, the attempt is admirable.

Pinstripe is a deliciously dark 2D adventure that places heart at the centre of hell.

Blasphemous is a visually stunning action-adventure platformer that will leave you clamouring for more. Challenging even the most skilled players, you’ll be left shaking your head at your own incompetence while unwaveringly resuming your quest as the Penitent One.

XCOM 2 Collection is the complete package, giving Switch players a chance to experience one of the best turn-based strategy games of all time. Not even a few technical issues can hurt the unparallel feeling of barely being able to succeed as you lead the resistance against hostile aliens.

Bomb Chicken offers simple and enjoyable gameplay wrapped within excellently designed puzzle-platforming levels that offer a unique experience worth your time.

Ittle Dew 2+ is a fantastic 2D Zelda style experience and is a well worth your time, puzzle solving can be difficult at times but the charm and presentation will be enough to keep you going until the fantastic conclusion.

The Adventure Pals is a charming platformer that players both young and old can enjoy. With a great sense of humour and a beautiful cartoon-y artstyle - Massive Monster's latest will surely bring a smile to your face!

Super Crush KO is a 2D brawler that could be a little better with some additional variety. Still, you should have a hell of a time while its campaign lasts, all thanks to fast-paced combat that makes you feel powerful.

A charming pixel-based roguelike pinned down by its unfriendly approach towards player progression. Flinthook will be rewarding for some, whilst providing controller-throwing levels of frustration for others.

Kero Blaster is a retro platformer-shooter that has also managed to embrace contemporary mechanics. Resulting in a challenging but fair experience that provides just enough variation to be engaging during its appropriate length.

You know the score by now. It's Sonic the Hedgehog's maiden voyage, and comfortably his finest. But you might find a more cost-effective way to play it elsewhere.

Should it not have been for the unfortunate technical issues found in the larger areas, Darksiders II would have been an easy recommendation on the Switch. Unfortunately, should you still want to experience this grand adventure, it’s best done elsewhere.

Lumo is a wonderful little platformer that celebrates its heritage without relying on it too much. Players of any ability will find plenty to enjoy here, and slight issues with the perspective does little to diminish such a charming, engaging experience.

The Turing Test is first and foremost a first-person puzzler, but it’s also an experiment in unorthodox video game storytelling. You won’t struggle to finish, but your imagination will be in overdrive as you work your way through it.

ARMS is what Nintendo franchises thrive to be on the whole; a fun, outside the box take on something that's close to many of their fans' hearts. They've done to fighting what Mario Kart has done to racing, and Splatoon has done to third-person shooters - they've given the genre something shiny, addictive, and new. Forget the Midas touch, ARMS has the Nintendo touch... and it makes every punch you throw that much sweeter.

20XX is a great tribute to the Mega Man X franchise that just works. The procedurally generated levels allow for constantly fresh challenges, and its swift gameplay encourages you to climb the online leaderboards.

Human Resource Machine is a game that aims to teach you basic programming. The one thing it fails at is that it forgets to teach - you will soon be tasked with puzzles that seem impossible, making this job-simulator game feel like a real chore. While aesthetically pleasing and certainly charming in an odd way, you will soon be eyeing up a career change.

Regardless of any slight graphical downgrade from other systems, the full Outlast atmosphere and performance levels are present and correct in this excellent package. It's a must for the collection of any adult Nintendo fan.

My Memory of Us will perhaps be better remembered for its visuals than its gameplay, owing to some frustrating controls. It’s good enough to warrant a place in your Switch collection, though.

Vaporum is a deep, unique take on a dungeon crawler that melds the grimy, steampunk aesthetic of BioShock with methodical, cerebral controls and combat. The plentiful options for customisation mixed with the great character designs and overall mood make it worth playing for genre fans.

Beautiful artwork, a rich variety of missions, and lots of fun in single-player or with friends – Hardcore Mecha is a package well worth strapping into. There are some technical hitches, but these are heavyweight goods. Get stomping!

A few smart upgrades and gorgeous visuals give Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty a fantastic modern-day shine, and the smart puzzle platforming gameplay and dark sense of humour remain intact. While this port isn’t quite new anymore, it’s definitely still tasty.

Heaven’s Vault is a truly unique sci-fi adventure game from Inkle, combining a non-linear branching narrative with an ancient language system begging to be uncovered and deciphered. With a good length and plenty of replay value, it’s a story worth diving into.

Rush Rally Origins demands a place in your Switch starting line-up. It’s second only to its Rush Rally counterpart, and is far and away the best racing game to release on the Switch in the last couple of years.

Swordship is fresh in concept and design, a thrilling ride that has been crafted with real attention to detail. It’s certainly a challenge, but nevertheless a rewarding one, with an addictive grip that is hard to resist.

Digimon Survive is a graphically pleasing visual novel with a very light sprinkling of TRPG gameplay. The characters are a bit static, the gameplay can be quite slow and a bit too easy, but the mons are cute and the story can be engaging at times.

Filled to the brim with content, this game has enough to keep you playing for hours on end and coming back for more. A sports sim done right. Pure Pool is pure brilliance!

As I've previously maintained, these games' worth can only really be determined if you have loads of people handy, and people who can think of entertaining answers at that. Sadly, the price point is far too much for what it is - you're going to need to fork out about £100 for all four of the packs. The sum of the parts isn't worth what's being charged for the whole.

Super Tennis Blast is a simplistic but engaging tennis game that focuses on the core of tennis, whilst also knowing how to deviate to provide an enjoyable alternative on the classic sport.

Goodbye Deponia is clever in parts, funny in places, and an enjoyable romp most of the way through. Some dud puzzles and fudged movement controls aren’t enough to derail it too badly.

Grow: Song of the Evertree is a surprisingly complex and rewarding world builder that offers an abundance of opportunity to relax and unwind. It’s far from perfect, yet what it aims to achieve, it manages to do well.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 contains a good selection of titles from the series' later years. It's not quite up there with the first compilation because two of the four titles available here may not be to everybody's taste. However, if you're looking for a complete history of the core series, it's a fantastic companion piece to the first compilation.

MouseCraft‘s simple aesthetic and generic name hide a polished and enjoyable puzzler underneath. The eighty levels will provide you with more than a few hours of puzzle-solving pleasure and an absolute abundance of lightbulb moments.

Radical Rabbit Stew borrows ingredients from a few other video games to boil up a 16-bit nostalgia hit, featuring a solid (if not overly long) arcade puzzle single-player campaign, a chaotic multiplayer offering, and a level editor. Delicious.

Primordia is a solid story with a point-and-click adventure built around it. A few unique mechanics keep things fresh throughout, whilst fantastic writing keeps frustration at bay when trying to solve the mostly logical puzzles.

There's a tremendous amount of fun to be had with Overcooked: Special Edition, and it's another great little party gem that's guaranteed to generate some hilarity - if not arguments. It's a joyous little game, and if you love fun it's essential.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix is a must for new players who are looking for a deep, rewarding JRPG. If you've played the game on Nintendo DS, however, you may find the gameplay options presented in this port a bit of a downgrade from the original.

Carefully curating a couch coop title that is unique and inventive can be difficult. SMG Studio has done just that. Moving Out may be challenging and occasionally unforgiving, however, it is an altogether charming and enjoyable gaming experience when played with friends.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a laugh-filled adventure game that’ll have you chuckling away at its parody of the fantasy genre. It might sometimes stay too faithful to its point-and-click forebears, but its world and characters are utterly charming.

Mantis Burn Racing delivers on what it sets out to do: It's a fun, satisfying racing game with plenty of multiplayer options to keep your interest. The circuits have their own characteristics and the different race modes and classes of vehicle keep the game changing just enough to keep you coming back for more. It's top-down racing at its best and being on the Nintendo Switch fits the game like a driving glove.

Game Builder Garage takes Nintendo’s magic and adds charm to game-building tools to offer an incredibly powerful minigame creator. Sadly, the lack of discovery undermines the games you’ll create, making it a curiosity instead of a must-have.

Dragon Blaze stands tall as one of the best shumps the Nintendo Switch currently has to offer, even eighteen years after its arcade release.

Fans of people-watching and time-management will obsess over sleuthing out Do Not Feed The Monkeys’ many endings by spying, manipulating, and barely sleeping. Although playing on the Joy-Con feels sluggish, the touchscreen works well – except during an occasional game-breaking bug.

A reboot of the series that still stays true to its roots, Bravely Default II is most certainly worth the half-decade we waited for it. This is a must-have for fans of the series and JRPG fans in general.

Guns Gore and Cannoli 2 is a very serviceable 2D platforming shooter. Certainly better than its predecessor. Unfortunately, Vinnie Cannoli remains an awful character and everything about the plot is lazy and at times concerning.

Disgaea 1 Complete is an incredible remake of 2003's uncompromisingly idiosyncratic JRPG breakout hit. Hundreds of hours await, endlessly toiling at copious dungeons and enemy encounters, and the sheer delight that battles manage to produce is never lost on you.

Induction encourages players to consider cause and effect in each of its carefully crafted, time-bending puzzles. Though some mechanics could have used some explanation, it’s certainly no puzzle that fans of the genre should give this game a go.

Grapple Dog is everything a good 2D platforming game should be: smooth gameplay, amazing artwork, and a soundtrack easy to groove to. With a cast of cute characters and a quaint story full of comedy, you won’t want to miss this one.

You won’t understand just how much you need a pixelated tentacle monster in your life until you play Carrion. The smooth controls, stellar soundtrack, and slick graphics will provide several hours of top-notch entertainment.

Banana Mania takes the best Super Monkey Ball games and combines them into one solid package. Frustrations from those original games remain, and the lack of online play is a disappointment, but new options allow for a less stressful time.

Morphies Law: Remorphed is an entertaining online multiplayer shooter. There might be others out there which offer better shooting experiences, but this is distinctive enough to make it a worthwhile use of your time.

BIT.TRIP CORE is a musical mind-melter! Pixelated bits are flying at you from all angles. Holding up/down/left/right and pressing A to the beat intercepts the bits trying to pass. The gameplay can get frustrating rather quickly. There is a lot to keep track of, and it will likely take a few trips to the Nether before you get the hang of it.

Though the design feels a little dated these days, there’s no denying KOTOR II is among the gold standard for Star Wars in terms of story and immersion. Look past the clunky combat mechanics and you’ll be in for a treat.

Having 100 players able to join in is a major selling point – you can see the live streamers encourage their fanbase to get involved, so of course that would be a lot of fun. However, on the other hand, there’s a bit of a problem in that so few of the games are able to be played with less than three players. Yes, it’s a party game, but people in general simply don’t have that many people around with them to be able to play the game often. Then again, that could be a blessing in disguise.

Fans of retro gaming will revel in Mr Tako’s adorable take on Game Boy style and gameplay. But, despite its qualities, and some well-delivered polish, this game may struggle to win over modern gamers.

Demon Turf reinforces the 3D platformer genre with an experience that is familiar, yet unique; challenging, yet rewarding; complex, yet engaging. With a distinct art style and superb level design, it is a blast to play — even if the combat is not up to those same standards.

Piczle Lines DX 500 More Puzzles is more of the same, but the premise is so good you won't regret carrying on playing. Puzzling perfection.

Severed Steel brings a fresh new feel to the FPS genre without overcomplicating the controls. It’s a furious blast through impressive environments and a rush from start to finish with very little to get in your way.

Creature in the Well is a clever and challenging original take on dungeon-crawl pinball. It might be too tricky at times, and irritating when you have to trek back to the point you died, but the action sure is fun.

Super Chariot is a release that hasn't come out to much fanfare but deserves a spot in your collection. A unique premise is coupled with some charming platforming action. Make sure you bring a friend, though, as that will improve the experience immensely.

Axiom Verge 2 doesn’t quite deliver the same thrill and nuance of its predecessor. There are great ideas at play and an engaging story if you can commit to it. But be prepared to come away slightly underwhelmed.

If you're after a puzzler, I couldn't recommend Piczle Lines DX enough. Just the amount of addictiveness and content you want, and a lot of DLC content to come as well. You won't be getting bored of it anytime soon, and being able to come and go as you please is a big plus point. A welcome addition to the Switch library.

Sparkle 2 is an easy game to overlook during what I like to call the eShop Renaissance, but for such a reasonable price you're getting hours of genuinely fun and addictive puzzle gameplay, complimented with a stellar - albeit repetitive - soundtrack. I was truly caught off guard by its quality, and I have a feeling you will be too.

Letter Quest Remastered is a fun twist on the traditional word puzzle game by introducing RPG elements, although the game begins to run out of fresh ideas, the foundation of this game was such fun that it was still a blast to play through. The game needs a chance to flesh out its ideas more but in the mean time I suggest you get the dictionary out and play this game.
