    A delightful 2D character action game, with fluid combat that feels incredible. There are a ton of ideas packed into Super Crush KO's short runtime, and plenty of goals to chase after the credits.

    Super Crush KO is a great brawler-shooter. Vertex Pop has managed to create a game that feels fresh right until the very end, and one that offers a lot of replayability. There's some good humour within to deal with the absurd situation Karen finds herself in, and the gameplay just flows very well. Super Crush KO is an early highlight for 2020.

    The bright and bubbly romp doesn’t last all that long⁠—there are 16 stages and four boss battles ⁠—but that also ensures Super Crush KO doesn’t outstay its welcome while encouraging some potentially tense high score battles. This is a rad game to start off 2020 with, and I hope the endearing optimism found in Vertex Pop’s second Switch game is a harbinger of the year to come.

    While Super Crush KO isn’t perfect, it’s hard to play without a smile on your face. Brawlers aren’t usually my cup of tea, but this title is smooth, exciting, fun and a real joy to play. And it really fits perfectly on the Nintendo Switch. With a few tweaks to allow players to up the difficulty, I have no doubt that Super Crush KO will attract a passionate band of followers.

    Super Crush K.O. is some soft of combo ‘em up, a very interesting concept that works quite well. It needs a wider variety of enemies and situations, but it’s one of those titles you want to consider if you want to try a unique action game.

    It's to Super Crush KO's credit that, after rattling through its brief but bouncy campaign, we immediately dive back in for another crack at perfecting our high scores. It is some of the best gaming junk food around: moreish although not particularly nutritious, best enjoyed in small moments of convenience and often while watching something else. [Issue#342, p.116]

It's not the deepest combat system ever–in fact, the comparisons to Devil May Cry are greatly exaggerated, and the combat in Super Crush feels more like a simplified version of Guacamelee. While the combat system isn't deep, however, it's good fun. And it has to be, because Super Crush has nothing else to offer: there is no difficult environment to navigate, no secrets to find (as far as I could tell), and no plot twists. It's just moving from right to left, punching and kicking a reasonable variety of robotic baddies.

    Super Crush K.O. is small in scope, but it has been carefully crafted. The graphics ooze charm and pastel-colored happiness, and the silly manga-flavoured teen story brought a smile to my face. The key idea behind the story is amusing in itself: every cat owner in the world thinks that her cat is the cutest in the universe–but the game's protagonist is actually right in that belief, and her cat gets kidnapped by an alien teenager for that exact reason. That light-hearted premise is essentially the whole story of the game, and it makes for some amusing dialogue and interludes.

    Like most combo-based games, Super Crush K.O. invites you to revisit completed levels in search of a better ranking, or a higher position on the online leaderboards. I'd have appreciated some extra content, like a harder New Game+, or a few hidden levels–but even though this game is short in length and narrow in scope, I ended up loving every minute of it. I'm hoping for extra content in the future.    … Expand

    But if there is one thing this game could absolutely have used, its some variety. Maybe some platform and/or puzzle challenges to break up the fighting. Its pretty repetitive and its mostly a game i play in short bursts
