  • Summary: Voxelgram is a relaxing 3D puzzle game where you sculpture models by following logical hints. It is a 3D variation of nonograms/picross. No guessing involved, only deduction and dioramas made out of solved puzzles.

I have some misgivings with Voxelgram. It comes at the Picross 3D throne and misses in some respects, but in a world where virtually none of this type of game exists, this is a precious gem. This game succeeds well enough to capture the majesty of Picross 3D on Nintendo Switch. While I’d love to see more charm and smoother controls, I’m just thrilled to be playing one of my favorite kinds of puzzles again, and with the prospect of procedurally generated puzzles, I’ll hopefully always have more to go back to when I feel the urge to chill out to a good puzzle. Even with just the 170 base puzzles though, Voxelgram is an enjoyable puzzle game.

Voxelgrams shows that a 3D Picross game can work on the Switch. It doesn’t work as well as it did on previous handhelds, but it does the job well. If you’re willing to spend some time getting used to the controls then you’ll be navigating around the puzzles with little drama. With 176 puzzles packed in for a good price, it will help fill the void with some 3D Voxelgrams. If you’re after a relaxing game with few pressures I would also recommend kicking back, turning up the sound and taking it easy with Voxelgram.

Voxelgram is a very playable take on the Picross phenomenon and its twist gives some highly attractive results. However, the game inevitably sacrifices some of its playability with the jump into that third dimension and the control challenge that emerges.

If you enjoy Picross 3D and want to play a similar game on Switch then Voxelgram will definitely provide hours of head-scratching fun.

I can't seem to make peace with it, no matter how hard I try. If you come into this game accustomed to the Picross 3D control scheme, I think you'll find it extremely difficult to adjust. If this is your first game of this type, perhaps it's not so bad. Personally, as much as I want to love this game, i find it essentially unplayable in its current form. Expand

As you're rotating the view (something you will need to do often), the game makes contextual choices as to what layer(s) of the puzzle you want to see at that moment. This is a problem because it ALWAYS decides that it should HIDE ALL BUT THE LAYER FURTHEST FROM YOU. The only way to keep it from doing this, is to literally never let go of the ZL button the entire time you are playing. I'm not kidding, you have to do this whenever you rotate the puzzle in any way, or it will contextually select the worst conceivable view depth for you.

I was excited about this game, genuinely excited. I love puzzle games, picross style games, and I especially loved "Picross 3D" for the DS -a game which handles this exact sort of thing, but vastly better. The designers should have taken note of that control scheme, and they probably would have made one of my favorite titles on the system.

The control issues make this one of the most infuriating puzzle games I've seen on the system. This needs to be fixed/patched by the designers, or avoided completely.
