One of the biggest disappointments in gaming history. Simply it’s just a 40-50 hours of fun, nothing else. This might be a good rpg but this is not Diablo. Blizzard must consider feedback from players, not simply try to boost playing time with nerfing everything, even increasing loading screen time.

One I reached my personal potential in the game I switched to another character for a refresh. The ability to skip campaign is nice however grinding to 100 again not so much and now with the new 1.1.0 update, that grind got significantly longer AND don't expect any help from your friends to breeze you through to higher levels, those days are over. The xp gains now are laughable, I get them trying to prevent pay to level schemes, but me and my friends rely on each other to help boost one another. The across the board nerfs are atrocious, people were actually having fun playing the game and making it harder just to extend play time is a bad decision. When QOL improvements were added such as being able to teleport to a NM dungeon, it made the game better, cut down on unnecessary travel time and helped get lower level friends to the dungeon safely. Now, storage space, no changes to that? Really, my main character's loot took up tons of space. I had to create mule characters to hold stuff like gems and aspects. Anyways, I could keep going, but I need to remind myself that even know I paid $99+ for this game, it isn't mine and I only paid to access it. Shame on me. Expand

I guess it's my fault for expecting more after two garbage releases IE D3 and Immortal. The sanctity of this game has been fouled and I don't see it being fixed anytime soon. 2 out of 10 is being generous as the design is okay. Will check back in a few seasons for any positive change but I will not hold my breathe as they are clearly searching for profit over quality. Expand

Season 1 has no actual content, just changed values on skills and gear, new boss, bunch of new aspects. If next seasons will be same, then this will become same as Diablo 3, that was released 11 years ago, and after so many seasons, all new "content" was necromancer class added.

All you could do in Diablo 3 for years was nothing but rifts. Imagine same thing in PoE, if GGG would add maps, and stop adding any content after that, like breach, abyss, harvest, delve and so on.

Currently i see that Diablo 4 goes the same way as Diablo 3, no actual content added in new seasons, just "balance", bunch of new aspects and thats it.

Hope to see more effort put into season 2, otherwise, its not worth 70-90$, more like 20$ at most.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was okay in the beginning. The story was okay. The end game is tediously boring. I've reached level 98 and don't even want to bother getting to 100. It's just not worth the time. It's too repetitive. I'm lvl 98 wearing lvl 60 n 70 gear and don't even need to change it. There are no real rewards for reaching max level so why bother? Once you reach lvl 60-70 and get ancestral gear there really isn't any point in leveling up. Unless it's just to run repetitive and boring nightmare dungeons. I've started playing other way older Rpgs again. That's how boring Diablo 4 has gotten. Season is no better. I've reached lvl 78 and just can't be bothered to level any higher. What's the point? Also, spending 20 mill to reroll one thing on one item is super annoying. And also I've played over 500 hours of this game and not gotten even one Uber unique. I don't really care about them but still. Doesn't that drop rate seem just a little too low? Expand

And don't forget the beta was a SCAM that overpowered the player and hid the true nature of this game which is boring, repetitive, and begs for your time which will eventually lead to cash payments in the cash shop or battlepass. Lackluster, repetitive, and "open world" in the sense that the game makes you walk forever. This game feels like Blizzard updated the assets on an unfinished Diablo II sequel, and added concepts to the game without understanding how to make them good, and launched it onto unstable servers. -Talent tree and entire UI is ugly and convoluted. It's a quest to find your quests.
    - The monsters are the same the entire game. No fun / new mechanics to learn to dodge, no upgraded or variations, just the same guys over and over and over and over.
    - Completely unnecessary 'open world' with mounts - It's just boring filler Blizzard requires you to go through for no reason
    - Dumbest people - Not a single person has common sense. Every person who walks into a cellar, or goes down a ladder is inevitably caught by demons and needs to be saved. Sure, my main goes into those cellars, but is also capable of killing his way out.

If you know the franchise, then chances are you'll get through the main story line, start the next difficulty, and then quickly taper off. This game needs a FFXIV revamp - take it off the market, apologize to the player base, and develop a game that's good - otherwise it'll be a disappointment to the franchise, but at least removes the temptation to stay inside this summer.

Forcing you to use ineffective, cruddy, non-fun "basic" skills half of your playtime that do literally NOTHING except allow you to use skills that actually do something is such asinine design I am totally and utterly baffled that it ever made it into any game - let alone survive for two games in the most popular franchise of the entire genre. Why? What is the point?

I enjoyed parts of the story, I suppose, but most of what wasn't boring was just mediocre. Even then, I probably would have enjoyed some parts if I wasn't gated by the complete failure of the core gameplay to engage me even a tiny bit.

Build diversity doesn't exist - if you play Sorceress pick Teleport, Ice Armor, Frost Nova and Flame Shield like everyone else. The fact that respeccing costs gold doesn't help. I really don't get why they suddenly decided to penalize people that want to experiment with skills, rather than just looking up builds online. After you finished the story you would hope that finally the real fun begins, but no, Blizzard bombards you with boring side quests (go there, fetch that, come back, go there, kill that, come back, wohoo you did it) and annoying side activities like "Find the 160 hidden Althars of Lilith".
Maybe the game gets better in 1-2 years, Diablo 3 also had a weak start and got enjoyable years later, but as of right now I can't recommend it.

I have tried to upload my review 5 times and it continues to get my error forbidden. Has Blizzard paid you to prevent users leaving honest reviews of the game Metacritic?

My negative review is mainly due to it being almost unplayable on Playstation. I have a PS5 and both PS5 and PS4 versions behave the exact same way. The game client will crash in city hubs or freeze when transitioning from open world to dungeons. These issues happen almost every play session multiple times. I have started opening alternative game clients (if I had PS5 version, launch PS4 to load game and start playing again until PS4 version freezes and forces me back to PS5.)

Besides that, Blizzard has begun nerfing decent leveling areas to time gate content on the casual player. I don't have all the time in the world to sit and play video games any more. That is why I stopped playing MMOs. With D3, I would complete a playthrough and start a new one, but Blizzard is trying so hard to prevent most people from even reaching level cap.

I wish I could rate the game hirer, because the visuals are nice and the game play is fun, but there is honestly only about 20 hours of unique game play currently in the game. I have played around 60 hours so far and I feel like I have already done every little mini game 100 times and there is not a lot of variety in dungeons. I have literally run two seperate dungeons back to back only to get the same boss both times. Every time a YouTuber comes out with a video titled, best xp farm, you can bet, the next day, Blizzard has nerfed it into the ground. It is already got me looking for another game, because i am tired of dealing with the crashes/freezing and tired of running the same content over and over for minimal gains.

I've had multiple crashes every day since buying it, there's been bugs and character killing lag spikes on numerous occasions so no, this has certainly not been a smooth launch - with a ps5 on a ridiculously fast internet connection I know it's not a problem at my end. These are problems that numerous people have posted about on various sites so seeing reviews stating "smoothest launch" seem incredibly suspicious to me.

Next you have the odd design decisions. Just lots of little things that make you wonder if there was any quality control going on or if they had two teams working on it that couldn't agree on anything. Like when I'm trying to create an outfit on my druid and I can't see the top of the staff which is the bit with all the detail on, when looking at the challenges if I expand one that has a lot of requirements I can't see them all as there's no way of scrolling down (there's a scrollbar but this is ps5, not PC so you can't use your non-existent mouse to scroll it down) or their rather odd way of making it cheap to change your class build anywhere but it's a tedious endeavour to do so and there's no option to save your build as they want to encourage people to commit to a build........so why let us change out our build wherever and whenever we like then?

The combat feels clunky - they wanted to slow things down from the arcadey feel of D3 however it just comes down to hitting more resource builders and fewer spenders so it doesn't feel very satisfying - they could've tried something new or different instead of just slowing down a system that was fine for faster combat but feels sludgey in slower combat. The builders do absolutely no damage as well so the flow of combat is wonky as hell.

The world itself is a nice idea and having active events is welcome however the core dungeon grinding is bland. There's nothing new here, the layouts feel all too familiar, however they've opted to have every dungeon use one of about 4 different mechanics that all involve backtracking as you fetch items to progress to the next area, kill a room of mobs, do another similar mechanic then do the boss. It becomes very tedious, very fast and when you think there's over 50 dungeons it just feels incredibly lazy to only have a handful of variations on how to progress through them. There's things missing too like all the random traps that added little bits of flavour here and there or the joy of finding a randomly generated dungeon of epic size just teeming with mobs to kill - I'd actually groan if I found such a dungeon now with how tedious the combat can feel and how far I'd have to run with all the backtracking.

Build wise it looks good at first - there's lots of options to try out and have a play with but sadly this just makes the lack of being able to save your builds even more frustrating. It harms absolutely nobody to just let people save them - the cost of changing skills is negligible even in late game so why half a*** it like this? There are also some incredibly powerful builds that rely on "uniques" dropping which are incredibly rare and when you combine that with the bug where druids get a lot of barbarian drops (in the first week I had 9 uniques drop and 6 were barbarian) it just saps all the fun out of grinding - you see that unique item colour drop, get excited, pick it up, look at it and realise it's not usable (they have acknowledged that this is a bug). There is also a caveat to this build variety however - when you get to late game you absolutely must have ways of afflicting the vulnerable status as well as ways of becoming unstoppable to break out of the constant CC chains which make the already sluggish combat feel even more tedious so your build variety becomes somewhat limited which is a real shame.

I like a challenge - in fact I'm drawn to difficult games like a moth to a flame but this isn't difficulty to me, it's just frustrating even when it's not particularly challenging. I feel hamstringed at every turn when I just want to move around and have fun.

edit: based on the recent big update I'm lowering the score by another point. Boosting the damage of basic skills slightly does nothing - they still hit like a wet noodle whilst you build resource for the core skills. They apparently bumped up the resource gains but not nearly enough - it still feels slow and dull, if you run out of resource you're left casting up to 7 attacks or so to fill it back up again then spent it all in 3 core skills. They also allegedly bumped up the xp gains from nightmare dungeons. I completed one with enemies 2 levels higher than me and got around 10% of a level and one legendary item. This is painfully slow levelling when combined with the dull combat. I'm not asking for it to be lightning fast, just for your time investment to mean something more than the paltry rewards you currently get.

Now, the endgame is a real mess.

    - Online only, constant stuttering and freezes in towns, when entering/leaving the open world areas, it just feels terrible

    - Social interactions are pointless, you just meet to do a world event then leave, that's it, no world chat, no trade chat, nothing except a local chat that no one uses

    - PvP areas, fun with players of a similar level, which rarely happens, if another player is 5 levels below or above you, you stomp them or they stomp you, and that happens 90% of the time

    - Progression, during the campaign and up to level 50 it's fine, then it rapdily slows down to a tedious grind

    - Items, fine until around 50-55 when you will have good items for your build and then it's just min-maxing, without any real gameplay changing upgrades for felt ages or ever, 99.9% of the items will get instantly sold/scraped

    - Crafting, maybe a bit overwhelming for casual players who are unfamiliar with similar systems, but very restrictive for others

    - Currencies, mostly pointless as you will have massive amounts of them and very few items to use them on

    - Trading, sometimes you might find items that are good, but you can't use for your build or store them, let's sell them to other players?, yeah, nope, no auction house or anything that could reasonably facilitate trade between players

    - Content, you have a couple different variations of pretty much the same gameplay loop, get's stale fast

    - Downtime, there's just way too much of downtime in between, go travel to a dungeon for 2 min why???, just tp, want to do an event with other players, time to travel and wait, have to do errands in town? time to run around the whole town because everything you need is spread out, kill a mob group? time to move to the next one which takes the same or more time then killing it, did you miss something in the semi-maze dungeon? time to walk around and find it, ..

    - Mobs, mostly fine, some variety, mob group density is bad in dungeons

    - Bosses, forgettable, unchallenging and repetitive, world bosses are a joke as is the reward of killing them (which you only get once a week xd), campaign bosses which were fun aren't used in the endgame (with some exceptions)

    - Overall difficulty, if you use all the tools you have available somewhat efficiently then you will hardly struggle, you want a challenge? You can play dungeon at a much higher level then yourself to limit test, which mainly takes more time and makes it frustrating as a untimely sneeze will be your demise, loot is still bad and you earn less xp per hour

    - Game stability, handful of game crashes in my playthrough, ocassional stutter even in dungeons, forget about playing hardcore

    - Build variety, is very bad, you have a handful of options per class and that's pretty much it, and if you find a non-default build, good luck finding any uniques that might fit, because they don't exist

Well, I'll leave it at that.

tldr; If you don't own the game and want to play it for an extended period of time, forget about it. If you own the game, stop playing when it becomes tedious, because it will only get worse.

There's a fair bit to like about Diablo IV — best-in-class sound design, intriguing character classes, fantastic graphics and occasionally addictive gameplay all feel like the series in its prime. However, even the best parts are let down by an undercurrent of frustrating design choices: the cynical inclusion of a Battle Pass, a bloated open world, repetitive mission structure and progression that too often feels meaningless cast a long shadow that let the latest Diablo title down. Future Seasons may refine what's here, but many of its issues sadly feel baked into the core experience. All but the most die-hard fans may wish to wait for a substantial sale on this one.

The visuals are probably what excited me the most. The way the game looks and the atmosphere makes me feel like I'm playing the old Diablo again. On steroids and on a quadruple screen TV, but the feeling is still there. [Issue#328]

Diablo is back, and taking no prisoners. The top-quality, lengthy campaign will be enough for some, while the endgame should prove a welcome obsession for others. [Issue#30, p.84]
