The ever-present -- and ever-changing -- blend of grief and joy within Bleachers' music is always heartfelt, but it's rarely sounded as rousingly real as it does on Everyone for Ten Minutes.

The right word to describe ‘everyone for ten minutes’ is ‘crafted’. .... It’s not perfect, but it’s a love-letter, a mission statement, and a display of the magic that can happen when people come together to write songs.

Opening track 'sideways' is connective tissue, re-energising the Lana-assisted, Blue Nile tincture of 2024's Alma Mater with its stalking alto sax, while beatnik anthem 'the van' trades in Antonoff’s usual emphatic abstracts. The overstated prophetic bent will irritate some, but proves a worthy rhetorical jaunt.

Everyone, for ten minutes, may lack the technical verve of previous Bleachers albums, but it proves its creator can observe today’s controversies without forgetting what came before.

Hemmed in by a cluttered mix and NIMBYish paranoia, this album will test even a loyal fan’s investment in its creator.

His most ambitious and unrestrained work to date, yet the record is still frustratingly unable to fully shake off some of its most formulaic impulses.

Ultimately, Everyone For Ten Minutes doesn’t do enough to differentiate itself from the band’s previous outings. Despite some lovely, refreshing variations sprinkled throughout – like the atmospheric slow burn of opener “Sideways” – this is largely the sound of Antonoff planted firmly in his comfort zone.
