Pretty much a mediocre ARPG. Would be 6-7 if it didn't cost $90.

    Some reasons are: - Boring itemization - stack crit chance, crit damage, and vuln damage; - Lack of build diversity - 2-3 builds for a class. Even less if you're a sorcerer; - The endgame loop is far beyond boring - I can't describe it in words but while playing this game between monster packs I felt utterly frustrated;

Liliths personality start promising, a demonic, scary but by the end has become a disney character.

The affixes on items are pointless,
2% damage or crowd controlled enemies
    2% damage to vurnable enemies
    2% damage to near enemies
... List goes on with MANY more exactly the same.

The cinematics and music (you have to tweak your audio settings, turn down SFX to ~50% if you wanna hear the music while playing) in this game are fantastic.

All in all the game is not fun, most of the time you are just slowly walking without killing any monster, very sloppy and bland story, game lakes itemization, very good cine matics and music.

The gameplay is quite boring. Players are pushed in these little frames and have to run certain builds otherwise are punished. You are punished if you are playing solo as well, as teams can progress four times faster. The end game is boring as you will be running the same dungeons again and again. Loot, even though is most important part of any build, at the same time is irrelevant. You will dismantle/sell 999 items out of 1000 in end game. Helltide is another end game activity which is, as you might have guessed it - very boring. World bosses, legion, tree of whispers (if I remember correctly) are boring and waste of your time as rewards are meaningless. PVP is least balanced of all the games I have ever played. There can be 40 lvl difference between players and guess which one will be oneshot killed?
So, would I recommend this game? Yes, if you are casual and a fan of Diablo franchise. As I said the story is very good and acting is at a different level. Finish the story and be done with it as the rest is not worth your time.

Sure, ARPGs have reptation and grind but some have found ways to keep this interesting. Diablo IV lets you loose on a world map with dungeons that are beautiful and can be fun for the first couple of runs but sadly they get boring very quickly. After a few runs you start to see the same patterns, enemy types.

I keep thinking of the term 'surface level', I think everything seems great as you're whizzing by on the story but when you stop to have a look, it gets very dull and fast.

The short number of skills you can have assigned seems like a step back and the PC experience feels like its held back.

    Disappointing.

This game is a joke. Once you reach level 100, there's nothing to do but repeat the same thing. I've played for over 300 hours and even played the first season with a different character, reaching level 60. I felt that it wasn't worth my time anymore because it doesn't offer anything new, just repetitive gameplay without any purpose.

If we only take the campaign and the 1-50 leveling into account the game is a 6,5/10. The first 30 hours are quite fun and the gameplay is good. However after that it just become endless repeating the same content for minimum upgrade. From level 50 to 60 I upgrade my gear maybe a couple of times. Diablo III was better.

Finding a good armor or sword has become totally pointless, the game keep throwing at u so many objects that they have become simply money. There is no more joy about finding a really good weapon.

The monsters respawn is damn annoying … why am I doing all that mess if no progress can be perceived on the field? And why all monsters continue becoming stronger ? What is the point of growing if u never benefit from that?

The mechanic is always fun and fights entertaining and thrilling but i was hoping to see some evolution in this series. if wasn't for my broken foot i wouldn't play again this game.

I played the game in World Tier 2 and it was easy, like boring easy… put my brain in autopilot and before you know it I’m at the end, and wishing I spent my time on another game. For the first time you will not need to buy books or turn to content-creators to get the backstory to fully understand what is happening which is a really nice change. It is as dark as the early Diablo games (before the fight was taken to the high-heavens) and has enough character development and twists to keep you engaged.

The open-world content is fun enough to keep you playing for 10-20h after the story ends. Events are engaging and rewarding enough to be worth participating in until most gear slots are euipped with suitable "ancestral"-items.
Unfortunately, this is where the game starts to stumble. Once you have your "ancestral"-items for a working build, the only way to increase your power is through "unique items" that are randomly dropped. Yet, these "uniques" are sometimes so powerful that they can make or break your class and without them you will struggle significantly more with higher nightmare dungeons (which become the only endgame content - similar to greater rifts, just with objectives instead of a timer).

The gameplay is basically a builder-spender rotation that rewards big pulls for most classes. Spenders hit really big while builders do pretty much nothing which feels very weird, especially for classes with very costly spenders. It still feely clunky when you compare the gameplay to Diablo 3 in the end stages, before sets and newly introduced uniques solved the problem. Therefore I give them the benefit of the doubt here and assume that they will introduce new items with following seasons to make gamplay much smoother.

The game is ok. If you think about buying the game, I would recommend to wait until you can get it at a cheaper price since content is quite limited right now and the gamplay is still somewhat sluggish.

I have asked for a refund ONLY for that cosmetic (2200 platinum, not money) back, so I can use the platinum on something I eventually like. I have been denied the refund, because:

'... cosmetics that are purchased with in-game currency, such as Platinum, are non-refundable. However, those cosmetics can be refunded in case they were purchased with real money!' - guess what: the option to purchase from the shop via 'real money' is not existent, and the platinum is purchased with 'real money'. Being treated like this after I've given them 'real money' and didn't ask back for it, but for the platinum, is disgusting.

Honestly the worst thing about this game is all the fanboy apologists who viciously defend any and every criticism of the game. The ferocity is real and intense, people.
The game itself isn't terrible, but there are plenty of better ones out there. After leveling 1 char to 100 and 2 others past 50, here's what I didn't like:
    - Enemies ALWAYS scale to your level. You can never really have that fun relaxing overpowered grinding until after level 50, in which you can gear up and keep the world tier low. But by then, there's no reason to.
    - Only 6 skills are usable at any time, no exceptions. Classes like necro and sorc would've been really fun and more tactical if you could actually use all the skills you allocate, but they don't let you.
    - Everything is so slow. After coming from Path Of Exile and Chaosbane, EVERYTHING is so damn slow. Killing enemies, moving, dying. It's like Dark Souls vs Bayonetta.
    - Online only, even if you wanna play solo. This to me was the worst part, because the server seems to constantly have issues, sometimes you can't log in, and you need constant good internet as well. Just annoying especially for those who don't care about multiplayer.
    - Badly tuned bosses, often dependent on RNG. Sometimes the adds drop healing potions, sometimes they don't and you die. Oh, and you can't overlevel, as mentioned above, because they'll just get stronger with you. Yeah, it's dumb.
    - Respeccing costs money. A LOT when you're high level. This is annoying because sometimes your build just really can't beat a boss, and you spent an hour getting to him.
    - Thus far, anytime people found a really strong class build, it's been nerfed to the ground. While you could argue that it's necessary, there are other ways to keep balance, and the D4 team seems to be taking nerfs a little to the extreme. Pretty lame and very inconsiderate if you've spent dozens of hours on building a certain way.

So this definitely hits right for some people, but I found it a waste of $80. Wait for $30 and you'll get your money's worth. The whole game just feels like it was created by investors and accountants.

This is a PC review, and I'm a little disappointed how 9 years of development led to this.

However, the world looks amazing. Skills do feel pretty fluid and look half-decent. The music is great. it's worth a playthrough...although I think just once. Here are the issues I had with the game.

-The Mount system is really bad, the way it moves, doesn't move, and bugs are awful.
    - Invisible walls all over the map, most notably coming out of cities.
-Massive loading lag in certain areas.
-The stash is a 4th of the size it should be. 1 character will fill up the entire thing, not well thought out for multiple characters.
    - No search in the stash which is AWFUL, you have to save up legendaries and it is so tedious to mouse over every single item to check things.
    - Resists and defenses seem to be bugged, many people reporting this. This is a HUGE problem.
    - because of the resist issues, elixirs feel pretty useless outside of the XP bonus they give
    - NM dungeons bug out and kick you out sometimes while in a party
    - Too much screen clutter during battle, sometimes you cant see enemy attacks at all. Its a bit much.
-Running to every NM dungeon feels tedious, especially with how the mounts are.
-Some dungeons are unable to be completed due to bugs of objectives.
    - Very little build diversity (so far) I went to lvl 100, and I felt pigeonholed into going into 1 or 2 builds at most. All other builds weren't just slightly worse, they were almost unplayable.
    - The UI is horrendous, it's very mobile-like, with no customization. No name or health bar above your head. No map overlay options.
    - the PC UI is clunky, the game was clearly catered towards console, PC is paying the price for it.
    - The HP bubble is very confusing with Fortiy, Shield, and Poisons. HP bar over your head would help this.
    - Almost no endgame content. It's a never-ending loop of helltides and NM dungeons. They are D3 systems renamed. There's a boss at the end, but that's it? Needs more endgame goals.
    - No leaderboards at launch, kind of odd.
    - Itemization is not as hype as they make it. It is very basic but slightly better than D3...I guess?
    - Some loot rewards just don't feel worthy enough in some parts of the game.
    - World bosses are very basic, Not a challenge in any way, shape, or form.
    - Can't block people spamming emotes, gets pretty annoying
    - objects in the open world cause you to get stuck all the time
    - The notifications for world events are basically non-existent, so you end up missing some or needing to use a website to keep track of things.
    - Quest log does not track your old quests. So at a certain point, you cannot retrace and find the ones you are missing. Many people are stuck not knowing where to go to complete these currently outside of using a website and retracing all of their steps in every zone.

    Serious slog.

Long time D3 player and so much about D4 feels like a step backwards. Incredibly grindy, and it never feels like you have the upper hand. Review bombing is absolutely justified. The "critics" reviews seems fake at this point or they just didn't experience the whole game

    GOOD
    -Story
    -Graphics
    -Combat
    -Cinematics
    -Server stability
    -It's Diablo

    BAD
-Boring, not rewarding and laborious endgame loop & grind.
    -Various mechanic and movement bugs.
    -Very few endgame builds
    -Lack of core aRPG QoL
    -Too casual

Diablo 4 at this state is a very strong base for an excellent, time-consuming and addictive game but right now is just a time filler, you can play, you will enjoy it but it's just pointless.

It reminds me of Fallout 76 premiere, the game was bad but they did improve it tremendously.
I hope that Diablo 4 won't be different and they will improve things in the first season.

Def' not a AAA title; the game needed a good 3 more months of testing and dev to be up to some standard.

Cinematics/Story : 9/10. Nothing you can't view off Youtube. And after ALL THAT hesitation to know WHO'S THE BAD GUY(S) and who to choose: you have no choice to make!!!! At least give us some god damn choice for 1-2 different fight/dialogue or cinematic... That's basic stuff Blizzard! RPG says it in the name!!
Voice acting: 10/10. Same as above for Youtube experience.
Fight mechanics: 5/10 Clunky, world bosses are boring AF. Helltides suck. Endless braindead farming.
Difficulty ramped? You get 1 shot by boring chaos/mechanics you can't see.
    Farming/Story/Grind after level 50: 2/10 Boring AF.
Multiplayer: 5/10 Crossplay? Cool! Decent-enough system to play with low levels...but no freaking LFG system or COOP goals. Even my guildies do all their stuff Solo. We're far from WoW 2002.
Bought a 15$ Mount to support a Streamer: The resolution on my 27" makes me see no difference than the brown one lol.... Ok...

Gearing up with ASPECTS is a PAIN . They nerfed the builds like 5 times in 10 days??? Now, my inventory is full of Legendary Aspects I can't freakin use as I know they'll be the next best build in 10 days... And I have no mats for new Aspects on new Gear my level, as Aspects are 5x more important, but you can't get mats! Endless, braindead farming needed...

The druid sucked levels 15-30. I was happy to see a super pickup at levels 30-35-50...Now i'm thinking of going back to Vermintide2 with the friends.

    Hi guys,
D4 is a big fail in my eyes.
First and biggest one is that they just developed the game for console and then just ported it to PC. You can feel the "simplicity" and cheap variations of an inventory or the UI in general. The second biggest nono is the scaling world and mobs, it kills the immersion of the game because you dont have the need to do side-quests or grind Mobs to get a higher level because all content is scaling with you, so you are perfectly fine at any point even if you just rush the main quest and do nothing besides that. Me personally i did a few side quests just for the sake of doin it and to try it out but like i said, i dont feel ANY need to do them. So now lets get to questing in generell. You dont even have to know how to read or play the game with sound because every single quest has an integrated NAVI-system to tell you on the exact point what is where to do, you just have to follow the BIG yellow arrow above your head and complete every quest with an ease. I did watch the cut scenes and i even liked them but all the ingame voice acting i skipped because i didnt want to lose time and yet again, why would i even listen, when all i have to do is follow my QUEST NAVI. why would you kill your own game like that? same for items and their weird stats. I'm not sure why exactly they dont stick with the item bases they had in their privious games but i do know that the new changes are horrible. a few examples here: rare items(yellow) can turn in legendary items (orange) at any time at the vendor so you theoretically have to check every rare item that drops to look up the thousands of useless modifiers to check if its an upgrade for you. comparing items is always a torture because of the bad UI and those thousand stats with nothing to say. weapon bases also got downgraded and simplified. i could go on on so much more but im tired of listing all the things that are bad. im disappointed but not surprised. this game just has to generate money, no soul went into it imo

I looked forward to Diablo 4 for about a year thinking they could not go wrong with this game. Hearing the first reviews saying it is better than Diablo 3, I felt Diablo 4 could not go wrong.

Oh boy was I wrong. Diablo has 2 playmodes. Regular and Hardcore. In the first you can die, respawn and play the game till endgame. Death is of little consequence. In this experience you will quickly learn that the game is really easy most of the time and death happens, but I never truly felt like it was my fault. This is the gamemode to play when you can stand losing and wasting time, but at the risk that the endgame becomes boring REALLY quickly. Hardcore is the exact same game, but if you die, you have to start the entire game over again.

That last gamemode? That is how I like to play Diablo. Because the game can become too easy, having a permanent risk to lose a 20-80 hour character because of a single mistake, makes the entire game more enjoyable. Now here comes the biggest issue. The chance of a bug, or a disconnect being the reason you lose your hardcore character is so incredibly pronounced right now. It is going to ruin your entire experience with the game, when it happens twice in a row. Which it did for me.

But Blizzard made a game, with little to no depth. Where the game doesn't become harder over time, but you become weaker over time. Now 95% of players won't notice this at first, until their level 50 character is fighting a boss, and a level 5 barbarian just burns the boss down. Because there is level scaling ánd multiplayer coop, these two worlds don't mix. The fact that you are consistently reminded that you NEED to grind gear for hours and hours only to have the same effectiveness as someone 30 levels below you. You start to realize that 90% of this game was designed to keep players exited for new gear, upgrades and skills. Which they now NEED, to play the game with the same difficulty with people 30 levels lower than them.

What Diablo 4 is, is a 30 euro arcade game with little to no depth in gameplay, generic gaming mechanics that are seen in Diablo 3 and Word of Warcraft. It literally does nothing original. The story is great, and you feel like someone who truly is facing evil without any self preservation, but in reality 90% of the game is doing stupid chores for people who did something stupid with tons of demons roaming around.

And at the 50 hour mark, with I realized I was enjoying the game the most around level 30 because that was when you still feel like you look forward to something, yet are a little too weak for the stronger content. Once you hit the harder content, the game is still the exact same, but you die a little faster.

Now imagine that endgame requires you to grind for DOZENS of hours, only so you can keep up with low level players. You literally have to grind the game into boredom. To enjoy the game as much as a starting player.

They ask 70 dollars for this game, remind you the entire time to upgrade and buy coins. And deliver a product worth 30 bucks with half a story waiting for 40 dollar DLC, a "new" class and the same grind all over again.

If you think World of Warcraft can waste your time? Diablo 4 does it better.

First and foremost, this is in no way a final product. This is an expertly marketed commercial public beta. It's plagued with bugs, server and client side. The cynicism of the marketeers -aptly monikered "developers" in blizzard's videos and logs- says it all: "We're still learning and listening."
A sad trend in modern days' game's production.

A sad trend in modern days' game's production.

No, this marvel hasn't been fully tested in-house. It's been thoroughly played with dev-only cheats.
Any serious but mainly ethical, software developer knows a piece doesn't reach release-ready state without first testing how the real-world user experience will be like.

Onto the required comparisons with early Diablos.

    Diablo IV vs. Diablo.
Well, the dark, eerie setting is back. Kudos on that. Even D2 failed to bring back that atmosphere. Graphically, it's obvious that D4 SHOULD run quantum leap rings around the former! No extra points here. Drops, mechanics, replay ability... Diablo wins hands down. It never became as boring as any of it's later iterations, simply because each and every freaking dungeon was different! Nothing the after coming have achieved.

    Diablo IV vs. Diablo II.
D4 crew thought their skill tree, the sickly bastard of D2's and POE's, would kick nether zones, because of it's inherent mix and match options. Something along the lines of "Every build will be different, it'll be your own" was said in their dev logs. Not so, sadly. We're back to the disgusting D3 meta builds.

    Diablo IV vs. Diablo III.
I think most of us who went through the early D3 failure would think that blizzard would be keen on avoiding that mess. Guess what? They might have a bit of a thing for it. They may love said mess, even!
Yes, they got rid of the REALLY dumb cartoony, WOW style graphics, granted. And much thankful for that I am, truly am. D3 still reeks in some areas. Granted too.

But guess what? Ditching everything that didn't stink in D3 was a huge failure. The sheer amount of legendaries we got in that game meant you could make a WIP character that could manage to take the player from 50 to 70 with some thinking and effort, no matter if the drops were 5 levels down, they would make your UNIQUE build work for some time. Until you found those game-breaking set pieces so you could do the meta build too... Yes, that thing about D3 still stinks.

    Diablo IV vs. Diablo Immortal.
That's mobile game stuff, I'll never delve into that other excuse of a game. Sorry, old fashioned PC gamer here.

Now, why D4 might fail on the long run?
It might not! Why? Game consumers today, are rather inclined to purchase a product based on looks rather than quality. Blizzard has them covered here.

I'll let you answer this. How many patches did every Diablo iteration had? Find the pattern there.
D4 will have thrice as many, or more as D3 ever had in eleven years.

You need further evidence that this is nothing but a beta?
How about constant crashes, in either entry level or high end hardware? Yes, not one dev can claim it has completely tested in every hw configuration. Granted. But we have one too many people with the SAME problem in a very wide spectrum of configurations, from the oldest video cards, to the top high end ones. Have a stroll on the official forums, I kid you not. Some of them that ran D4 in the best looking configs at public beta tests.

I ran those at 1080, high res textures on with no problem. Come release, 720p at the lowest, ugliest settings and still crash every so often. Because there's no full screen option, nope, you have to run the bleeder, windowed. Full screen or not, that's the game running in a window. Most every seasoned game knows that's going to have an impact on performance. That's a fugly beta.
Funny how the mainstream reviewers seemingly had a problem-free experience... My take is that there must be some perk involved.

I'd rant some more but seems to me, we have every corner of the problems covered with the previous reviews.

Best Diablo iteration? It is not. Not by a long, very long shot.

why make it an "MMO", we wanted a single-player Hack and Slash, a Diablo 3 with upgrades, nothing fits (don't discuss graphics, everyone can find what they're looking for or not) but the leveling with the mobs evolving at the same time, the stuff that looks like nothing, the multiplication of crafts... nothing's going right for this kind of game

Great game. Couple issues with connectivity but other than that I've pit in over 100 hours and had no issues. Some fixes are needed (quest tracker, better inventory management) but for a game that's been out a week or two, I'd give it a 10 out of 10. Let's just see if the devs can keep it up!

Diablo IV, in my humble opinion, is a soulless game, as soulless as they come in 2023. With all the money grab and microtransactions that pleague most of today's games. Sadly it would have been just as bad without them. We completed the campaign, reached level 50 and now we cannot spend another minute with it. It's simply not fun and feels like doing work after we come back from work. It's crazy really. Big teams with talented developers mostly get their games wrong nowadays. Minecraft Dungeons is so much more fun for at leas three times less money and you can feel the devs had fun making the game.

I could talk about Diablo IV in depth, but there are a lot of reviews that do, so I'm just going to keep it at that. I have as much desire to spend my evenings playing this game as I do with an average or slightly below average game. I cannot rate it higher than 5 and less would be unfair to all the work that went into it. It's just an average, soulless, by the numbers game for me,

I played to level 50 and made it through most of the story but I'm just bored. I've been excited for this game to come out for years and I'm just so disappointed.

    1. Gems sucks. I literally have a stash full of gems and don't even bother attempting to socket them to anything. Any benefit they do is just so minimal that most of them aren't even worth my time. Remember when you got life or mana steal? Or when topaz/ruby/sapphire meant elemental damage? No longer. Now it's a very small bonus per kill for skulls, or a tiny bonus to overpower damage which has only a 3% chance of triggering.

    2. Bonuses on items are ridiculously specific. Similar to gems here. Items are a huge part of this game though, if your benefits suck then the overall game will be hurt. 5% bonus damage to close enemies (and that's one of the best bonuses). Others are more like, if your enemy is under a special status you can have a tiny percent chance of getting something minorly good. This makes swapping out items take more time to compare and adds to the overall boredom of the game. I want to kill demons I don't want to sit down with a spread sheet and debate on which item will be better in the long run.

    3. Auto scaling. This is one of the worst decisions they could have ever made. All the enemies scale to your level. Yay, I got a new level...wait, why is everything harder? Oh that's because leveling up actually works against you in this game. Items make you powerful, experience makes everyone else powerful. I can kill bosses and the best item I get is a rare that is over 10 levels below my own! Diablo has always had an element of items being important in your overall character but now items are so important I don't like leveling up. Once you have access to all your abilities around level 20-25 I believe, there is not much more reason to level up.

Just my 2 cents. This is a sad day when I can't finish a diablo game out of boredom.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does good things in some categories, and very poorly in others. Unfortunately the poorly designed categories outweigh what is done well in the game.

    Starting with the good stuff:
in the first play through you experience a quite joyful campaign. Characters feel visually appealing as your progress and find ways that items and skills further enhance your playthrough. Cinematics in the game are some of the best I've personally seen, and sound/audio is nicely designed within the game.

    The Ugly:
While combat, first run in the campaign, cinematics and sound may appear pleasant at first, the daunting tasks and playstyle ahead is what completely ruins the game afterwards. The largest and biggest issue within the game currently lies within its itemization design, and even more troubling is that this is meant to be a loot-based ARPG, that focuses on the loot systems and designs. During the play through you gear up in Tiers 1 and/or 2, to progress into Tier 3. In Tier 3, you are met with Sacred items that are more powerful than your current ones. This period is really meant for you to progress to Tier 4, which now introduces Ancestral Items, same thing, just more powerful. As this alone is unexciting and more of a chore, the items themselves contain a massive amount of non-simplistic affixes that further hinder enjoyment. The items do not feel rewarding and are not special in any way really, therefore you are just bombarded with random items that you end up spending more time on shuffling in the inventory than you do enjoying any gameplay. The progression in items is so lackluster that they generally provide you with extremely minimal increases in power on of top not providing any unique design to items themselves. While there are unique items in the game, there are very few of them. And things only get worse from here, these items are locked to your character level, as well as only tradable if they are rare items, therefore excluding any uniques and legendaries to be traded to others. Now there are restrictions on what you are able to trade (which is practically nothing) and only able to use your well deserved finds on characters that meet the high level requirement on alternate characters. So now as you grind, you are showered with useless "rare" items and a few uniques (which you will have several copies of) only to end up having to sit and read what feels like pages of affixes in order to make a decision on whether you want to change your build 0.1% this way or that way. The are also no other uses for any of these items as trading is restricted and the only type of "crafting" in the game is re-rolling an affix on an item.

This entire chore filled and very repetitive and very little rewarding itemization system does not fulfill any kind of excitement for loot or building of a character, especially in later levels as there is nothing else to look forward to. You will simply grind the same content, with very very little upgrades ever provided to you, and a guarantee shower of useless items that you will not know what to do with.

There are several more issues that itemization presents that would be too long to elaborate on. Other issues are the social aspect of the game. As this is a "MMO" there aren't any great ways of actually communicating with others, which also seems shocking. The is no trade chat (trading is non existent anyway), no global chat, and a very unsatisfying local channel. Currently the best way to find others is through third-party apps such as discord.

World boss and other events do not provide anything meaningful in the game. Most world bosses are defeated within the first couple minutes, occur every 6 hours, and provide you with the same useless gear as the rest of the game.

Overall, this is a very disappointing release of another Diablo series, while I was personally very excited for the game and played it to lvl 100 on top of a second character to T4, there is little excitement to any gameplay. It is a shame as the Diablo series that I assume most hoped for, is yet again not what we expected. And by far the largest disappointment is the way they designed items, what you can do with them, how they feel, and the very underwhelming experience they provide in gameplay.

As a long long fan of Diablo, I unfortunately do not recommend this game.

Bad: incomplete endgame. All stick, no carrot balance philosophy. No effort to improve quality of life issues. Emphasis on player minutes, microtransactions, and other corporate metrics over customer satisfaction. Aggressive changes to encourage the "right" way to play as dictated by the devs. No random scenarios like D3 Rifts (i.e. no procedurally generated dungeons).

Neutral: darker and grimmer than Diablo 3. Closer to Diablo 2 in terms of setting and art. Slower paced combat than Diablo 3, less "arcade-y".

Diablo 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the last few years. The launch went very smoothly, which gave many people hope for the game in general. But the developers seem to be ignoring player feedback in their attempts at "balancing" the game. Statements are made about preserving the long term health of the game, but in practice that just seems like artificially slowing down character progress with nerfs to damage and experience. Some changes make no sense other than as ways to extend active player minutes, a metric used to indicate user engagement on the platform (and something the suits like to see).

The attempts at balance feel very punitive and subtractive; that is, instead of increasing things on one side and decreasing them on the other, the vast majority of changes to gameplay involve reducing the amount of damage players can do, increasing the damage that monsters can take and deal, and slowing down the rate of progression. For a company that literally invented the ARPG genre and has almost two decades of experience managing a live service game in WOW, these actions feel comically inept and unfriendly. The lack of a player test realm - an environment in which players can help developers test changes to the game - means that balance changes are made in a partial vacuum. In a context where the player is the ultimate arbiter of how things work in practice, this makes no sense, especially when PTRs have been a fundamental part of WOW's development and were used in Diablo 3.

In short, it feels like Blizzard somehow forgot almost everything they learned from Diablo 3 when making Diablo 4. Players are punished for finding effective configurations, with changes that not only fix "broken" builds, but changes that ruin every build by turning down fundamental values without turning others up for balance. It's not too much to expect a company with Blizzard's resources and experience to provide a product that respects the player and leverages the wisdom accumulated by literally decades of experience in the market.

Most people are either hunting high gear score ancestral items or uniques by tier 4. Sacred items are purely for selling at this point. Yet end game content either doesnt drop unique items (whispers) or have an equal chance to drop sacred items… Thats just one example of frustration. Worked hard on a build- dont worry- thanks to some youtuber making a video about something similar- all the gear you just spent 40 hours farming is now useless- patch sorted that for you- What did the patch not sort. Loot tabs, item search, gems bags, quests that still dont let you complete them due to bugs… and so much more. Ugh. You know how many bugs I had on ff16 (cheaper) … non. Yeah I know- smaller scope in general right. But I didn't spend 100s of hours in game to have all my gear become useless, my game to shutdown or stutter every time I dodge or my time essentially being wasted on the same content thats now harder for no more reward. Real shame but I cant see myself jumping into season 1. Maybe see what the game is like when I am bored of Remnant 2 or Baldurs gate 3. Also. Final note. R.I.P barb. The Season 1 XP nerfs, patch 1.1 balance changes and the overall slow down of gameplay loop make it hard to recommend right now. The various nerfs have made non meta builds unable to compete in higher tier content, which by the developers own words should have been the opposite effect.

Just bought it and almost finished the campaign. As I loved the dark style of D2 and never really got into D3 cause of the comic-like art, D4 has all I wished for.
Can't say anything about endgame but people whining a lot here, when there is still time for Blizzard to improve things.
At first was too easy, now too much nerfed. They won't be satisfied whatever happens next.

Story/campaign is good. Graphics are good. Sound effects are nice and punchy. However, once you reach end-game, it is quite lacking. I leveled my sorc to 83, but grinding to 100 is such a chore and the lack of interesting activities to do in end-game makes it worse. Also, there are A LOT of bugs in this game, some of which have existed since beta and still have not been fixed. BlizzardStory/campaign is good. Graphics are good. Sound effects are nice and punchy. Not only that, but with every patch, Blizzard seems to break something, if not multiple things.

If you are only interested in the campaign, I highly recommend this game. The production quality of the cutscenes/voice-acting/etc. is top notch. I liked the main story enough to not skip a single cutscene or line of dialogue the first time through.

If you are an avid ARPG player who is definitely interested in end-game, there are better ARPGs out there. If you have not purchased the game yet (unlikely, because most ARPG fans have already tried this game), I suggest that you wait until Blizzard improves the game.

It's simple, the world of Sanctuary in D4 is a world where you are doing random activities that mean absolutely nothing to the landscape or the story you are progressing.

Your only source of change in this world is buying cosmetics. The world is made incomprehensibly grindy and hard because Blizzard nerfs the content to be that way. The grind is created in the hopes that while you are in the game you will get fed up with playing and buy something to comfort yourself.

I bought the Season even though everything told me not to. I can tell you right now, you are going to go and do rehashed dungeons with half the power you once wielded with the same talents, and you will be told this is game play. You will pick up nothing of value from these rehashed dungeons. These seasons are created strictly cause POE exist. You must understand I have never commented on metacritic before.

This time I felt obligated to do so to warn people that this is not a real game. Blizzard couldn't even be moved to change the map once you beat the campaign boss. Absolutely nothing changes once you fell the big bad and save the land. What was the rise in price tag for? For the honor of getting a PC game out of blizzard? You can't even blame the critics who probably got suckered into liking this game. What they received was a copy of something that wasn't truly fulfilled.

I will give this game a five because the visuals the voice acting and the animation are top notch. I wish the game play was just as compelling. It's a shame that all this artistic talent has been wasted on poor game designers and world builders.

Blizzard knows how to make a game, they just don't think they have to. I am ashamed I bought this product twice proving them right. Never again.

Great story and fun mechanics but that only lasts for about 10 hours of game play. Enjoyed running dungeons with friends. The side quests start to feel extremely tedious and the endgame content is a bit repetitive. Has such potential to be an amazing game, hopefully future content will help it meet that expectation. Like all current Blizzard titles, everything is investor-driven and I miss the heart and soul for the players who love and live such games. It just doesn't bring anything new to the table. - Battle pass and cosmetics shop is unnecessary.

Graphics are alright, tho I've never played Diablo for graphics and I view graphics as secondary, less important aspect of any game. The gameplay is all that matters.

The music is alright, no score stood out like Tristram theme. Kinda crazy everyone knows Tristram theme up to this day.

The thing that made me laugh out loud is ridiculous amount of work they've put into cash shop fortune teller lady, it really shows where Blizzard set their priorities.

Feel bad for the people who want exclusively single player experience, there is no offline mode for D4. It's like we're evolving, but backwards.

What's even the point of blue items? And really, even the yellow items aren't usually all that special.
Diablo I and II were insanely fun games. There was a formula that worked so well that people literally played them for years and even decades (D2). DIII was ok-ish but everyone knew D2 was better. How can the developers at Blizzard be so obtuse? Why make moving through the game so mind numbing? Why get rid of the value of gold? Why not make yellow (and orange) items hard to find and worth it when they are? Why make enemy combat an endless, confusing button smash slog? I literally can't tell what most enemies look like or what they're even doing to me. It's just visual noise.
Why was D2 so much better than D1? Because it was bigger and gave us more characters. Sure there was some pretty cool innovation with the gems and rune system but the basic game play didn't change.
I feel like D4 is a pretty looking Diablo clone that got all the reasons why Diablo was so fun completely wrong. This kind of misstep would be ok if these games came out every 5 years. But to wait almost 12 years? For this? It's just flat out unacceptable.

And anti consumer. And no game except maybe the witcher 3 would be worth this insanity.

So if the game didnt have day 1 removed content sold back to us then I would award it an easy 7 or 8...maybe higher once the many bugs are fixed. But right now and for evermore as these micros get worse and worse... I have to say wait for a deep sale or fee2play or plus etc. And its not ok just say dont buy it as if it wasnt for the gulf between rich and poor where there are enough whales to make games with these business models possible then the rest of us average people would not have to put up with this...as we didnt for the last 30 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very average ARPG at best, and that's setting aside the Activision-Blizzard pricing on the game shop (for a game that cost $70 base edition???).

    * Compelling story moments are not often to be found throughout Diablo IV (including side quests).
    * Very pedestrian music, where environment is very hard to notice and boss music is overwhelming.
    * Little variance between mobs.
    * The default zoom-out is way too zoomed in compared to even Diablo III.
    * Seasonal balancing changes that negatively affect those on the Eternal realms (who can't even participate).
    * There is no single-player option, so you can never choose to play offline which leads to...
    * Frequent disconnects and lag, which is devastating for "hardcore" characters and --
    * Even setting aside the DDoS attacks, their servers in general are lacking.
    * Game-play wise, there are so many issues that you should just watch The Act Man's video on YouTube on why D4 is a bad game.

The only positive I can come up with is that the aesthetic of Diablo IV is a massive improvement over Diablo III's. It was very nice to have a return to form.

After thirty years of developing Diablo games, Blizzard forgot every important lesson about how to make these games fun. Items are boring, the map is just an endless slog, movement is slow, the game is both always-on and completely empty, you can't trade items, your bags get full, skills are boring, etc.

I can't understand why they didn't bring a single QOL feature from the last decade's worth of Diablo 3! Early in 3, items were boring, builds were bland, crafting materials used too much space, etc. But after some major rework - items were fun, builds were unique, crafting materials use very little space, etc. And when Diablo 4 launches - why did they make their items boring, their builds bland, their crafting materials use too much space? Why can't they play their own games and try to include the "fun" from them?

This game is shockingly bad, and while you may have some fun with it, the game itself has very little to offer.

As a new player to Diablo this was not what I expected. I didn't expect to see such a bland graphic setup which reminded me of how games looked on an early console. Diablo isn't that as it's an overhead view which looks like a game out of the 90s where you run around smacking creepy things with an axe. It looks boring aside from the sections of video that play outside of the actual game play which isn't going to leave a notable impression with too many people I wouldn't think. To each their own but I feel I tossed 75 bucks in the fire on this one. Expand

The game is too grindy and the latest update makes progress even slower. 100+ hours to max level when there is no build variety and itemization is very poor. I have a PS5 and I am a casual player. I am about to buy a PC so I can play Last Epoch and PoE2.

I have no doubt that Diablo 4 is one of the best games of 2026, today it's not this day.

I've been disappointed by long waited big releases before, this is nothing new. But I think it's really the first time Blizzard ever let me down. Diablo 4 is at it's heart kind of boring. The flavor just isn't there, it's dry. I rarely even care about the loot I pick up because most of it isn't usable without restructuring your entire build around a probably temporary piece of gear that doesn't seem to really feel any better. Diablo 4 has taken away the joy of finding a new legendary and replaced with a great deal of "meh". I thought the throwback to a Diablo 2 style skill tree would be great, but they sucked the life out of that as well with punitive rising costs for changing skills, the skill bar is much too small too explore your abilities and experiment. The story is okay, the main character voice actors are excellent, but ultimately no matter how good of a job they did, the ending was anticlimactic and forgettable. I've little doubt they will milk it for DLC before too long, but honestly, why bother? They put in a half effort on the main game, and I've little interest in rewarding their laziness by paying them again to do a little bit better. Blizzard used to be great, and I will always appreciate the work they once did. Maybe if Activation gets their mitts off of Blizzard they will be a gaming company again instead of the soul less corporate entity that their newest game mirrors.

On a minor side note, I really miss hearing Brian George's Abd al-Hazir monster entries and James Hong's jewelcrafter story telling, little things like that being barely present at all in DIablo 4, the small details like that added up to make a game that felt far less empty. Diablo 3 was far from perfect, but at least it was fun. Diablo 4 just feels grindy and hollow to me.

No group finder, clan controls are barely functional. Its just amazing that a company that already has all the answers figured out from D3 - is unable to captialize and improve on that knowledge in D4. Such a missed opportunity. Maybe in 2-3 years if devs really work at it this could be the game it should have been. Expand

I love this game. It's been such a long time coming, and the first 35 or so levels are an absolute joy to progress through. However, after that, it becomes dull, stretched out and repetitive. The game focuses on tedium as opposed to content to entice players to continue and purchase cosmetics. Once I complete the story, I likely will not return for another few seasons.

Sadly, I feel most of this games. Attraction is held up by nostalgia. I never played any Diablo game, so I’m not basing it off. Any other Diablo game. I play video games. Forget what anyone says about every bill being playable because they aren’t. People who defend this aspect say that every build can’t be viable because it’s just a shadow ball getting fired at enemies versus a fireball is dumb because every build should I have a different unique play style. If they aren’t viable, don’t have them in the game. There is no sense of balance if you’ve made no attempt at balancing. Moreover, once you spec for this specific build, just so that you can play the game, they end up nurfing it forcing you to go back on the Internet and weigh the benefits of another build or you just have to put up with what you’ve worked to gain in the game being erased. There are some mechanics like being able to avoid attacks that I like but they could’ve been done a lot better. Anytime you get into a boss fight. The only real noticeable difference is mechanics where you have to kill side mobs that either make the boss stop doing a special attack or causing the boss to be completely invulnerable. I’m all for boss is having different phases. For this to be a AAA game my expectations were a lot higher than the game delivered on. It’s definitely not worth 70 - $100. I’m sure the game has monetization shop items and stuff where they try to milk you for more money but the game base isn’t worth this amount of money, so I’m not inclined to want to spend even more money on it. I would like a refund myself. I’ve already started playing other games and enjoy them a lot more. Expand

This game is a game that should entertain you for thousands of hours so:
Campaign - 8 (12-20 hours playtime at best)
Content/Endgame/Gameplay Loop/ARPG Systems - 2 (the rest of the time you ll spend in D4 if you are an ARPG fan, if you are a campaign/story andy idc). Endgame is booring and unfinished unpolished. Ganeplay loop? Same 2 builds that feel bad. No variety. For a 70$ game? Pathetic

There's a fair bit to like about Diablo IV — best-in-class sound design, intriguing character classes, fantastic graphics and occasionally addictive gameplay all feel like the series in its prime. However, even the best parts are let down by an undercurrent of frustrating design choices: the cynical inclusion of a Battle Pass, a bloated open world, repetitive mission structure and progression that too often feels meaningless cast a long shadow that let the latest Diablo title down. Future Seasons may refine what's here, but many of its issues sadly feel baked into the core experience. All but the most die-hard fans may wish to wait for a substantial sale on this one.

The visuals are probably what excited me the most. The way the game looks and the atmosphere makes me feel like I'm playing the old Diablo again. On steroids and on a quadruple screen TV, but the feeling is still there. [Issue#328]

Diablo is back, and taking no prisoners. The top-quality, lengthy campaign will be enough for some, while the endgame should prove a welcome obsession for others. [Issue#30, p.84]
