I had to rate a 2 instead of 3 for one reason, the entire point of this game is to be an interactive story and there are major issues in that regard.

People may play through it once an enjoy the story yes, but as it is also a game not just a story there should be replayability. People don't buy games to play them once, and unfortunately the replayability is terrible. Trying to replay

People may play through it once an enjoy the story yes, but as it is also a game not just a story there should be replayability. People don't buy games to play them once, and unfortunately the replayability is terrible.

Trying to replay even a second time reveals many glaring oversights.

First, there is no way to skip scenes and/or dialogue, or even fast forward; either option could have been easily implemented. Without them you find yourself watching the same exact scenes over and over frustratingly with no recourse other than waiting through boredom.

Another major issue is they created a checkpoint system they utterly fail to make use of. For example there is a scene that no matter what you will end up in the basement. It's proceeded by many minutes of tedious unskippable dialogue which you have absolutely no interaction or input during... yet once in the basement they neglect to create any checkpoint. This is ridiculous as nothing can be updated on changed before the basement so why force players to sit through this proceeding dialogue ad nauseam. There should be many many more checkpoints, especially scenes where nothing can be changed prior.

Finally, there is no background master database it follows so you can not simply replay one chapter. Yes this could possibly cause some conflicts but this could have been easily resolved by blocking only conflicted progression... or much more user friendly and not too difficult to implement, use a small measure of predictive storytelling to fill in the gaps.

Moreover they could have even simply done like other choice based games have and allowed user input to simply fine tune conflicting choices. In the end this is a game and supposed to be enjoyable not monotonous.

With the tediousness of the aforementioned issues. It is not very enjoyable to playthrough more than once and in fact ends up being frustrating.

The Playability is good, interactive but still good
The Graphics are well done. the futuristic Detroit seemed just good.
    The Sound, is good enough.
The Story and the writing are very good, the path branching, and choices are very interesting.
The Characters are lovable, you feel, empathy, anger, sadness with and for them, and that's a very good job from the team.

    It was good.

This is one of the richest experiences I've had and I cannot recommend it enough. The game's world is perhaps the most realistic depiction of the following decades that I have seen in any media. As I was playing, there were a million questions that popped into my head. Everything from the new technologies I was observing to the way society restructured in order to accommodate these. By far, the biggest impact in the world will be the improvement and adoption of A.I. by humanity. Detroit: Become Human does a great job of showing us how that world will look like.

From my initial impressions, I realized that this was going to be a very profound and well detailed game. This is my first Quantic Dream title and I can already tell that it is a studio full of passionate people who put a lot of care into telling a compelling story with an interesting premise. One can see that they did their research before producing a game that takes on the important topics of A.I. and futurism. Some of the themes most present in the game are: meaning, purpose, identity and civil rights. This is the most philosophical and political game I have played and I loved every second of it. The scenes where the androids questioned their very programming resonated with me. It made me realize that us organic beings will not be so different from them after all.

By far my favorite character out of the three robots was Kara. Her story made me think the most and I adored her relationship with Alice. The philosophical question on whether artificial beings can love, hate or care about something or someone is best reflected through Kara. Throughout her journey, she risks her life to save Alice and feels stress when facing danger. I truly believe it is possible for A.I. to develop feelings (or an equivalent of them). These thoughts raise a lot of questions about the meanings of love, parenthood and relationships. These are all ideas that will be challenged and questioned in the next few decades, and we must be ready for them.

Markus' story has a lot of important lessons and questions we must ask ourselves in the future when A.I. arrives. Is it a matter of principle to treat everything with respect, wether it is artificial or not? What really constitutes consciousness and personhood? I also sensed a lot of messages against the threat of government and corporate tyranny in our future. The characters' stories all share the themes of preserving liberty against those who try to take them from us.

The magazines you find throughout the game are some of the best collectibles I've seen in a game. They paint a very interesting picture of our future. These magazines contain news articles reporting on topics like technological advances, politics, climate change, entertainment, etc. Some of them will fill you with existential horror, optimism or food for debate. Reading them feels like taking a peek into our future, something a lot of people will be looking forward to. but also making us have more consciousness in the present.

I loved Detroit: Become Human and I think everyone should give it a go. The story is well paced and impactful, the characters are very interesting and likeable, making you think carefully every decision you make in order to protect them. This is truly an experience that will always be a part of my life.

I think this game (as other Quantic Dream games) should be looked at as introducing a whole new concept in gaming that is kind of in between the movies and traditional console games, and I think Quantic Dream and David Cage have reached the climax of this genre so far by this game.

This is one of the best games that I've played on PS4 and definitely a big jump for quantic dream compared to beyond two souls and heavy rain. Here the choices are so many and they actually make a difference in the way the story proceeds. I liked the story and found it quite engaging. Character development is quite nice and you can emotionally connect with characters along the way. Visuals, graphics, and music are among the best that I've seen in PS4. I personally had quite some fun playing it again and again to see different scenarios based on my choices.
I really loved this game and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Detroit: Become Human is the latest cinematic romp from David Cage. This is the fourth stab at this style of game since Beyond: Two Souls back in 2013. This is the fourth stab at this style of game since Beyond: Two Souls back in 2013. I will freely admit that, while there were elements about Beyond: Two Souls that I found enjoyable, it ultimately fell short in my opinion in regards to its gameplay and narrative. However, much of my issues that Beyond suffered from were greatly improved here in Detroit. It's gameplay was more engaging, there were more interesting and likeable characters, and your choices actually mattered again like in Heavy Rain. It basically takes Heavy Rain's gameplay and Beyond's high production values and combines them into, what I believe to be, Cage's best work thus far.

The game takes place in the not so distant future, where androids are common place and heavily impact the lives of the humans that created them for better and for worst. A revolution slowly starts to develop amongst the androids, demanding for equal rights as a (not very subtle) allegory for racial justice. The game chronicles three androids in particular. Connor, a detective investigating the cause of these rebelling androids (deviants); Kara, a house maid that rescues a child from her abusive father and the two travel north to Canada for refuge; and finally Marcus, a former elderly attendant that ends up as the "Chosen One", destined to lead this new android revolution.

To get this out of the way immediately, Connor is easily the best part of the game. His actor Bryan Dechart perfectly portrays him as clearly being non-human, but without coming off as robotic. He also has the most interesting character arcs in the game, whether you decided to change him for the better, or to make him a ruthless, unfeeling android. There are tons of great moments with him, especially when interacting with his hard-boiled partner Hank (excellently portrayed by Clancy Brown). Kara is a sympathetic character in her own right, but doesn't quite hit the same emotional notes for me as Connor. Marcus, on the other hand, does very little for me. He's easily the driest of the three, but does make that up a bit with some of the most significant story elements in the game. The story can be as subtle with its themes as blood in a white room. The heavy-handed symbolism, racial allegories, corniness, and just general "Cage-isms" can turn a lot of people away. As someone who is no stranger to Cage's work and can get around his eccentricities, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story for what it was. I haven't been this invested in a Cage game since Heavy Rain.

The game also sports an absolutely stellar presentation. While some of the character models still walk into the Uncanny Valley, the game on the whole looks gorgeous, with an incredible attention to detail. Most impressive to me was in the lighting and cinematography. There is a very heavy emphasis on rich, dark colors and mood lighting, especially enhancing some of the more tense moments. The voice acting on the whole is just as solid as it was in Beyond (once again giving special mention to Bryan and Clancy), and the soundtrack is fantastic, varied and perfectly fitting each of the main characters.

Gameplay goes back to a style that more closely resembles Heavy Rain, and certainly for the better. You explore your environment for contextual prompts, engage in QTE sequences and occasionally make decisions from multiple choices. This time around, though, your choices matter more than any other Cage game up to this point. You make decisions that have significant consequences to not only the story, but in how individual characters and the world at large view you. At the end of each chapter, you are given a summary of the choices you made in a branching fashion. Some are very linear, while many others branch of into several trees that really show off just how much different a route can be, both in subtle and big ways. While I personally tend to go back and play through my preferred route, there is a lot of replayability to had here. It also helps that you can go back to specific chapters rather than having to start a fresh playthrough.

Detroit, while still carrying all of the faults of a typical David Cage game, is easily his best work to date. It's story can be kind of dumb, but it's engaging. Not all the characters work for me, but the ones that did really kept me going. If you haven't played a David Cage game yet and just want to know what all the fuss is about, this is the first one I will recommend.

"Detroit: Become Human" is a game I didn't even watch the trailer for - just got it through PS Plus a couple months ago, saw some of my other friends were playing it on their PS status, so I didn't know what to expect.

Through the course of the game, you control 3 separate android characters on separate story arcs that rotate fairly evenly in a story that takes place in near-future Detroit (November 2038). Each character wrestles with identity of self in different ways that tends to remain interesting throughout as their storylines slowly but inevitably converge.

If you've played the Batman: Telltale series games, D:BH is a lot like those in that you make choices that often impact the remainder of the game, which gives it the promise of satisfactory replayability.
Actions and posture choices also have a cumulative effect on secondary characters, where they can be neutral toward you, friendly, or hostile that open or close available pathways as you go.

There are also plenty of fights that require you to hit the right button, stick direction, or controller direction at the right time to either score or avoid a hit (the stick control recognition left a little to be desired - as did striking a button in time, but not counting it).

Unlike Batman: Telltale is the interface. You are often NOT in conversation with other characters (though you frequently are) and you are exploring the world around you. The storyline featuring Conner, the police android, actually feel more like Batman: Arkham Asylum's detective mode as you look for clues regarding yet another android who has become a "deviant," or in other words, has defied its programming and betrayed (and often killed) its human owner.

The game is a technical triumph. MOCAP captures are excellent, and they're especially noticeable on actors we know like Clancy Brown and Lance Henriksen. The music is ridiculously appropriate and immersive, and there is a constant atmosphere of danger no matter which character you're controlling. Markus' experience in the junkyard, Conner's first assignment with Hank, Kara's brief stay with drug addict Todd...those and more give the game a visceral feel and the sense that your choices are final. The "flowchart" that appears at the end of each chapter, showing which branches of the story you've unlocked, then throwing in the option to view the percentage of world players and percentage of your friends who went the same way you did is an extra bit of fun.

The game is good at creating pivotal moments where you know there will be no going back. Does Markus stage a peaceful protest or violent rebellion? Who can Kara truly trust? Should Conner pull the trigger in order to learn important intelligence, or should he refuse and lose the chance forever?

Interacting with the world is usually a lot of fun because you use almost the entire controller regularly (except the D-pad). You swipe things on the center touch panel, you use the right stick to unlock and interact with objects, and of course you use the 4 main buttons and 4 triggers to do other actions. I've always felt the touchpad was horrendously underused, so I like seeing it in play here.

The voice acting among leading and secondary characters is almost perfect. The lone exception is Bryan Dechart as Conner who sounds out of place in a cast who otherwise sounds completely natural (but apparently video game awards folk heard something else). For an advanced prototype, he sounds wooden. His character arc, however, is probably the most interesting of the three leads (Kara's is the least).

The load times between levels are great, so there is a virtually seamless flow. However, when you're in the "look-around" freeze-frame mode, the objectives don't stay up long enough. You usually have to punch the button again. Also, it seems that a few options were needlessly limited, and the game seems to have forgotten (at least in my game), that Kara should have had a gun to use at Jericho.

Anyone curious how my game went and don't care about spoilers, go ahead and continue:

Markus led a successful peaceful protest (he also didn't push Carl's son back), kissed North at the climax and made the people love androids and support their cause. (Fun fact: Minka Kelly - who played North - was also an actor in the short-lived Fox series "Almost Human," about a cop and an android partner).

I lost Conner twice (once in the kitchen of the TV station [called for Hank, kicked the chair...and literally nothing else to interact with until time ran out] and once when I failed at combat at Jericho...got shot), so I just went cold with him and let Hank go...but I didn't shoot Markus.

Kara didn't save Luther, got taken to a camp with Alice, but managed to escape.

An incredible adventure that gives you the creeps. A strong story that, if passed correctly, can evoke strong emotions. Huge plot forks, the smallest details that significantly affect the ending of the story. I have only positive impressions about this game. Perfectly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is by far the best David Cage game to date. But because it was made by David Cage, you need to know what you are getting into. This is not a video game, this is an interactive TV show put into video game format. What little gameplay there is, is terrible. Even moving around feels like your character is swimming through jelly. The rest of the game is QTEs and making choices that effect you and the characters around you. The graphics and the motion capture work they put in really shows. The story however i would say isn't as good as heavy rain. The game starts off really strong by introducing us to Markus and Carl(The only likeable human in the game). But the problem comes when the plot train starts rolling. It is almost like this whole game is just some message about black slaves. Like idk i am not black. But being compared to a robot like that is pretty dumb and sorta offensive. Especially by the end of the game, they really hammer it down your throat. Depending on the choices you make you can actually ruin your playthrough entirely with one simple mistake. There are also some major plot holes that show up. Like in Kara's parts. Where it turns out Alice was actually an android too. They pretty much ripped that from blade runner, but did it poorly. It just raises so many questions. Like where did Todd get the money to afford all these expensive androids? I am almost 90% sure there was a scene where Todd hit Alice during his rages and Alice bled from the nose red.... It is m night shyamalan levels of dumb twists. It changes nothing too. Like they just did that to seem edgy. Another thing is a lot of people like Hank. I personally hated Hank. I couldn't care less if he wanted to kill himself. He was a total dickhead, his son died so now he thinks its everyone else's problem. Especially because he is a cop, he does illegal crap right in front of you and screams at his boss. He was such a depressed piece of **** i only cared about his dog, Sumo. That is another thing. All the humans are total **** for no reason, it is like watching a Stephan King mini series. It isn't written terribly but those are the things that really had me going like "wtf... so i am supposed to feel bad that i killed someone who was just going to kill us anyway".Which is why i picked the"evil" path and basically just rose up. Its a great movie. But i don't see the point in replaying it, once you finished it there is nothing left. You can just same yourself the time and watch it on youtube. Only buy if you can get it for like 20 bucks like me and you know what you are getting into. I enjoyed my time with it. But it is a 12 hour movie with nothing to come back to after. I hope David Cage can start working on his gameplay in these kinda games. Also try not to virtue signal in the writing. Just make a good story, try not to get too into politics. Expand

Expand

Incredible visuals, great characters, ok story but not really a game. The story could have gone more into details and into the conflict of android lifes and of the consideration if androids have live and why exactly. The gameplay is literally just quicktime events...

The game has three protagonists, and through the use of mostly linear exploration and QT events, Detroit masterfully ties together interweaving plotlines and their consequences so the player feels fully in control of their heroes' eventual destiny. Kara, Marcus and Connor are all androids that you will spend around equal amounts of time controlling throughout the games' 10 hour lifespan. Each one is acted and animated spectacularly, as well as going through their own rites of passage as the story cogs begin to whir, and your characters begin to realise their voices in a world where androids have no say.

Detroit is a stunning game, and a technical masterpiece. Locations are well detailed and lighted expertly, and it is difficult not to feel immersed in the world Quantic Dream have made. Snow dusts Marcus' coat, wind tousles Connor's hair and the feeling of rain seeping into your shoes is palpable as Kara searches for shelter. Combat scenes, though sometimes tricky, feel fluid and natural, timed dialogue choices feel meaningful (and they are), and tension runs high towards the end as the game asks you to make difficult decisions that have huge ramifications on the world around you.

Detroit, whilst a technical marvel, suffers from some contrived, one dimensional writing here and there as the game doesn't have the chance to explore much other than good vs evil and in addition, rarely operates with any nuance or subtleties. Throughout the game, whilst you make inherently 'good' or 'bad' choices, the game regularly punishes you for the latter, and rewards you for the former, sometimes operating under the 'are you sure you want to do this?' guise. To be fair to Quantic Dream, many moments throughout the game do, and will punish you for disregarding its characters. Unlike the majority of games, your protagonists are vulnerable, and there are many points throughout the game in which their journey can be cut short. You may find yourself wishing to restart a chapter, or even the game, but I highly recommend not doing so. Thanks to the unique flowchart system, each chapter/level can be re-explored multiple times, thus giving you a chance to see 'what happened if?' after you have completed the main story fully.

Despite the often heavy-handed script, and regular preachiness, the game does a great job of realising the characters' place in its world. For a narrative driven game, Detroit: Human doesn't say a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, but relies on its characters to be the voice of the player. Kara, Marcus and Connor's fates are entirely in your hands, and it's up to you how their journey ends.

Remember the Star Trek TNG episode about Data's trial about his right for self-determination? If you loved this episode, you will love this game.

This game is a masterpiece. Yes QTEs are annoying and a lot of people seem strangely triggered and melting their snowflakes about the story being a bit too "SJW" to their tastes while they grasp at straws trying to make parallels to current day events about whatever their fears are. As far as I'm concerned, it's their problem and their loss.

It sports a thought provoking story worthy of Asimov's legacy. If you think this is about current day whatever in your persecution of SJW fantasies and hallucinations, you seriously have issues and need to take LOTS of steps back from current day politics. You drank WAY TOO MUCH KOOL-AID and need to sober up and calm the heck down.

The story has nothing to do with current day events, it's GREAT anticipation sci-fi about AIs, Robots and how we're going to treat our creations when the time comes and they might develop more than what we thought they would, transcending their programming.

A well deserved 10, I'll be recommending this one warmly for years to come to my fellow gamer friends.

    Cheers!

Detroit: Become Human delivers a story with a ton of possible choices, and a lot of questions for a player to bear afterward. If you like it when games make you think about them after you play them, this is the game for you. Stunning visuals and music score, make you forget about some weaker points of the game. But all in all, it is an enjoyable experience you should not miss.

Detroit: Become Human looks and sounds great, and includes key player choices throughout, though it could have benefited greatly from a tighter script. While it’s commendable that Quantic Dream tried to cover hot-button issues in a big-budget video game, it works better when focused on the personal character moments than the bigger themes that don’t dig deep enough to make a meaningful impact.

Although the narrative is fairly linear, there are enough branching paths over the course of the game to make it feel like your actions matter. That allows Detroit to still be fun even on multiple playthroughs – and for an interactive movie, that’s a rare praise. [Issue#231, p.68]
