Lets start with the fact that Paper Mario, the Origami King is not an RPG. Its just not. Its an adventure puzzle game with some very light RPG elements to it. If you will come to the game expecting a RPG you will surely be disappointed. Also, if you comer expecting a high octane gameplay experience, this game might not be for you.
The Origami King is a beautiful, charming, funny and relaxing adventure. Everything about it serves that purpose- the crisp graphics, the amazing music, the excellent dialogue and humor. When playing the game I really felt that I was adventuring in a new land, meeting friends and gorgeous vistas along the way. The game is packed full of secrets and collectibles, and so much thought have gone to every line of text and every object placed in the game. Again, if you were to rush through the text and just want to push forward, I wouldn't have as much fun, but that style of gameplay is NOT what The Origami King is all about.
The game world is designed in such a way that almost all the time you interact with new story or gameplay mechanics, cool minigames, interesting puzzles and quests, remote resting spots and much more. The writing is one of the best I ever experienced, with many moments that warmed my heart or made me laugh, and after playing through almost 2 of the 5 streamers, I feel extremely attached to my travel companions.
The only two complaints so far are the economy of the game being kind of broken, at least at the beginning, as I often have about 15,000 coins just through exploring, and healing items at the shop coming very cheap. Also, the combat, while very fun in my opinion, is one of the weak spots of the game compared to the other parts, but this is only a MINOR issue, and is not NEARLY as bad as the review bombers present it. Even if you are 100% not the target audience, there is absolutely no way that a game like this deserves less than a 5 (and obviously not a 0.)
At the end of the day, the game isn't for everyone, but if you are the kind of gamer that likes to lean back and explore a beautiful, interactive world and wants to go on a real journey- I think the game is absolutely perfect for that. I can't wait to jump back in to it very soon.
Paper Mario the Origami King is a gem, and thanks to the Thousand Year Door fans, it will probably be a hidden one.

The fight system is just horrible. There is no progress, you just get coins, and coins get you nothing, you already have too much.
Every fight works the same way, align your ennemies in line or in square, hit and win.
Failing to align the enemies, and you lose. You're not good at rubik's cube ? this game is going to be your greatest frustration. For me it's a nightmare. The characters

The characters you meet are all generic. So they can't be lovable, everybody knows that but apparently Nintendo is against it nowadays. We all know what a goomba or a koopa looks like, and we're quite fed up with seeing the very same model over and over. Wrong.
Exploration is also broken, and it's tied to the battle system : the only hidden things you will find around (a staple of JRPG and the first three Mario RPGs) are clone toads to free. Not equipments, weapons, stuff to make you stronger, change your strategy, nope, you only get toads. Freeing a toad is useless, but allows you to unlock artworks. So you got no motivation in exploring, it's boring.

I love JRPG, I love Paper Mario on the N64, its sequel on the NGC, I love Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest XI, the first Mario&Luigi etc. I'm totally fine with slow paced adventure, turn by turn fights. But here, it's just not working. It's a failure, in a time where Nintendo is meeting great success, where Nintendo finally brought back the Mario 64 formula for its platformer with incredible reception, but for Paper Mario, we're stuck in the wrong loop since the 3DS, and unfortunately, this Switch version is not what people wanted, is not what fans want.

I gave it a 4, which is an extremely severe rating for me, because two days in a row I stopped playing, not because it was 3 AM and I should really need some sleep, but because I was bored and frustrated. It's not something I ever experienced with a Nintendo game, I'm so disappointed.

Not as bad as Sticker Star, not as good as 1000 Year Door.

Great visuals and audio. Battle system is tedious and Nintendo's exploring new things has hurt them here. At first it was unique, but it gets really repetitive fast. Story really bland. I'm about half way through the game and will be selling it right away. Not really a surprise, but its not in the same echelon as TTYD.

Impressive sound design and a wholly cohesive art experience cannot compensate for the horrible battle system, the non-existence of original designs and shoddy story. While at times very charming, the game goes overboard on its 'humor' to the point where it doesn't take itself seriously anymore ultimately culminating in (ending spoilers!) King Olly's motivation being literally a gag. After reading some recent interviews this game feels like the epitome of developer talent being channeled into obviously wrong directions. The Origami King peaks very early and only gets worse the longer it goes mainly because of a wholly defunct battle system which should never have been anything but an occasional gimmick. Disappointingly only a 4/10 for a game that nails a lot of details but somehow manages to fail spectacularly on its very basal level.

With that being said, I really miss the RPG-type story with complex and developed characters. And yeah, about that, I really don't know why there are like 30 NPCs that are all toads with no unique features, like maybe one or two are kinda memorable because their personalities were funny and that's it.
The combat, while being interesting at first, becomes a little bit repetitive (specially when you repeat the exact puzzles with the same enemy placement, wth Intelligent Systems? you do well in that regard with Fire Emblem). Also, the coin system is handled poorly, you can win all the battles in the first third of the game without using them, and by the time you need them, you have a looooot of them, enough to never worry about them in the entire game again.

In conclusion, the game was fun, looked pretty, and the Paper Mario humor was there. It has two main flaws which make me prefer Super Paper Mario and TTYD, but at least the coins aren't as broken as cards in Color Splash and, well, we shouldn't even talk about Sticker Star, let's say that game never existed.
If the main reasons you liked Paper Mario before Sticker Star were story and combat, don't buy, you'll just get tilted for no reason. Otherwise, I'd say wait for a $40 sale on the eShop or something like that.

Even though the RPG elements of the older Paper Mario games were so simple that even a toddler could understand them, the growth system has been completely removed, instead relying on finding the occasional heart container or accessory to become stronger over time. Sidekicks look more like sidekicks at long last. So far the only Paper Mario game that made me come back to the series (since Super Paper Mario). Most recommended giving it a try!

This game is not one I would recommend. It has a very generic story, unappealing characters, a tedious and unnecessary turn-based battle system that has no place in an action adventure game like this, and worst of all, is being sold at full price. Save your money and get another game.

So much potential lost with such an awful battle system. It sucks all the fun out of the game, could’ve been a great game but the battle system makes it unplayable.

Terrible game. Nintendo needs to do away with Shigeru Miyamoto and Kensuke Tanabe, otherwise they risk to kill any trace of creativity within the company. Terrible game, terrible battle system, and though Nintendo says it's not an RPG, what's the point of adding turn based battles then? Dont buy this!

This is a great action adventure game with a lot of fixes from the last two games. The atmosphere and aesthetic is great along with the music. The battle can be tedious if you don't like puzzles. This game is very much the Mario version of a 2D Zelda. The music is great. I would give this a 10/10, but this game won't blow you out of the water, but it is a great game all around.

There is no controllable partners, no interesting battle commands, the plot is extremely basic as is the bland world which is literally just endless toads. And worst of all, there is no point! The rpg puzzle battles not only take a very long time, and waste your weapons, but you get no experience points AND they don't prepare you for boss fights which act completely differently. You can quite literally skip, avoid, or flee every non scripted battle in the whole game, thus rendering PLAYING THE $60 GAME YOU BOUGHT kinda worthless. There is no positives to this experience. Do not get it. I have gone through until the 5th Streamer and I can not stomach playing any more of this video game. "But you cant judge a game if you haven't finished it!!" Look, if 20 hours of a game does not grab you or is THIS horrible, why should I bother stomaching another 5 or 10 hours in a dumpster fire like this. In short, this thing is not only the worst paper Mario game, but proof that Nintendo is willing to dumb down their beloved ips just because people will buy anyways. Expand

I have only played TTYD, which is one of my favorite games of all time, and I think that Origami King has many parts that throw back to features from TTYD. Examples of unfair judgements: People who complain about coins becoming too abundant have not played far enough in to realize the big ticket items you will be spending your coins on, or how to use coins in battle to make it less tedious and frustrating. No unique characters or sidekicks, again, did these people even play far enough to see where nintendo went with this? To be fair, I do think that nintendo took a huge risk making the battles basically puzzles, as I could see that being very hit or miss with people since it can be frustrating and unenjoyable for some. And I do wish there were more side quests, and they brought back the partner system. But overall, I am really enjoying this game, and I find all of the humor and dialogue funny and charming. Throw your bias aside and give this game a chance and stop comparing it to TTYD. Expand

I wanted to go in liking this game being a paper mario since the very first game but this game just has a lot of the design flaws that sticker star and colour splash had. First of all battles are again feel really pointless although I will admit later in the game you do somewhat feel like you need to battle to get some confetti but honestly I think you can just play this game without battling most optional enemies which is a real shame.

The battle system itself although creative I don't find fun at all. At first it seems intuitive but when for every battle your on a timer it feels really stressful at times with how your going to plan out your next attack which is something I never really felt even from the sticker star and colour splash games. Also although it neat that they introduce equipment rather than stickers and cards it's annoying that they break and it kind of goes back to battles feeling pointless because I'd rather save my stuff for required boss fights and encounters rather than optional enemies.

It's really quite a shame because I think what this game needs, or the series as a whole, is to fully commit to either the RPG side or action adventure side because this series since sticker star proves that you can't just half put into both the RPG aspect and action adventure aspect. Stick to one and I think maybe you can make a good game out of it but until then we will just have these weird design problems that plague all these games since sticker star.

The game is fun in it's own merit but I often question myself the point of putting battles in the game when their sole purpose isn't completely weighed out. Origami King claims to be an Action Adventure when it has some hint of elements of being a turn based RPG- yet doesn't take full steps to be such a thing.

If it's not a fully-fledged RPG or a fully-fledged Action Adventure then which is it? It attempts both but it doesn't feel it nails either quite well to be honest. Origami King tries too hard to be too many things with no clear focus. The writing and charm relies very heavily on current tropes and topics so I find returning to this game years later to be quite inefficient.

+ Lovely presentation be it level design, visuals and soundtrack
    - Tries too hard to be too many things at once with no clear focus
    - Writing is one-off making replayability none-existent
    - Somewhat repetitive gameplay when exploring. Lots of button prompts/hammering to gather resources that are only temporary.

If you're looking for an adventure game to enjoy once then this is it. Something to remember fondly come the following years is something I believe Origami King will fall behind at.

It feels like they didn't want to commit the game to being purely an adventure game and left this half-baked vaguely RPG-ish combat system in as some sort of half-assed attempt to preserve some of Paper Mario's roots. The only real progression metric is HP upgrades you find which have some undefined boost behind the scenes on your stats in battle, but battles are so short and simplistic it hardly matters.

I’ve been so confused by the negativity around this game. This paper mario has been so refreshing to play through so far! I’ve felt rewarded for looking in every nook and cranny I can find and hammering all sorts of the overworld searching for secrets. The music is very good as well. Most combat is avoidable and the combat that isn’t is usually shaken up to keep you on your toes! II’ve been so confused by the negativity around this game. I especially love the ring puzzle system, it’s extremely fun and enjoyable and really adds some needed depth to combat so It isn’t just a button mashing fest. Though you could argue that some of the puzzles are easy i’d say that it doesn’t really matter because at least for me it’s still fun to solve.

I’ve played Paper Mario for the N64, TTYD, and Super Paper Mario on the Wii (was a personal favorite story wise for me) and I even played Color Splash.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is without a doubt worth playing.

TOK is your standard Color Splash 2. If you hated CS, there is a very likely chance you will hate TOK. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems refuse to listen to fans of classic PM, and TOK is another middle finger to that audience. Do not waste your time and money with this if you are a TTYD and 64 purist. Put it towards Bug Fables and support a brilliant indie game that took nearly 5 years to make. Expand

I really like this paper Mario game, Yeah the battle system is not the best but it was better than I expected, however, running away from enemies is so easy in this game.
The games world design is amazing, the place actually feels like a home for certain species and the game humor is on good, it catches me off-guard every time overall I would recommend this game

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
