This is the first time I have ever given a game from a series that I love below a 6/7. Nintendo or Tanabe lost the plot, the story isn't just nonexistent it is horrific how bad it actually presents the little story that exists. They insert the ultimate Navi, she interjects so often, I find myself hating her and wishing she died. The combat is the worst I have seen in any AAA game. They just nuked the entire Paper Mario series. Tanabe doesn't even care, he did an interview where nothing that worked in the series previously can be used in the series going forward. So the next game is probably going to be an apocalypse. No thanks, I am out. What happened to you Nintendo? I thought you had a quality assurance team.

Nintendo saw Last of Us 2 and said, hold my beer. We can do better by making every aspect of the game the antitheses of the entire series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There will be some spoilers here so be warned. No major endgame spoilers though. Having played all the different paper mario games including the fan favourite thousand year door this was a tough game to buy. Honestly didn't want to because of the battles but enentually did, and boy was I glad I did. To start of this review the game actually begins pretty dark and creepy which for an opening was kind of unexpected and overwhelming but still fun nevertheless. After that the game truly starts and get's lots of fun. I will try to get through every aspect of the game in this review so let's get started. First up the story. This one is honestly pretty good in my opinion. It has a nice combination of humour, seriousness, even creepy at times (beginning parts especially) and lots of character has been put into every different character you come across. Even all the toads have different dialogue. You can find toads scattered across all parts of the world for you to be found and they all have some pretty funny dialogue not gonna lie. Next up the design. The world look absolutly stunning in game. It has vibrant environments and locals. The game has a really good paper ecstatic to it (just like color splash but just that more beautiful) and the world is interconnected so it feels like one huge world instead of different "acts". As for the battle system, that is where it get's a "little" lacking. This time the battle system has a puzzle solving element to it. The arena is made of 4 circles and 8 parts with enemies positioned on each of these parts. The thing you have to do is position them so they are 1. After each other in a line or 2. 4 characters in a square in front of you. After that it is actually just like other paper mario games. Chose the attack and hit them with a jump (the line) or with a hammer (the square) to win, or letting the enemy attack afterwards, rinse and repeat. Whem defeating enemy you only recieve coins instead of exp and confetti (this games version of paint and is used to fill out holes in the world to restore them to their original shape and color). The coins are needed to buy items and weapons. These weapons are like the badges from thousand year door and let you use a new type of attack but the difference is that they break after an x amount of uses. So overall the game is amazing and really worth it if you like paper mario. If yoy are way to nostalgic driven then you might want to skip this one but it is compared to the recent releases (sticker star and color splash) the most old school you will get. Expand

Two hours in and I'm getting really bored. I read all the reviews and was hyped this might actually be "the one", the long awaited decent Paper Mario game. Good story, music environments, battle systems, partners are back, finally!... Oh... wait a second, not really.

    Cons / Just OK:

-Coming from TTYD, combat makes no sense. You do a ton of damage even if you miss the cues, you can essentially one hit anything. The puzzles are boring, hand holdy (you get 2-4 puzzle spins and attacks!) and tedious.

-No exp, no real rewards from battle. You're instead SHOWERED with coins. Will we finally hit millions or even billions of coins in the next iteration of this game?

-I'm easily entertained, I laugh at almost anything, but I need to ask, where is this humor everyone keeps talking about? I smirked once or twice, but that's about it. Haha, Luigi dropped his hat...haha...?

-Contrary to what some have been saying, the environments are just OK in my opinion. It almost feels like people have forgotten how vibrant other Paper Mario or even recent Nintendo games have been. Have we forgotten how beautiful Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, etc, have been? This game is no where near that level of epicness yet some reviewers are claiming this game is on a whole other level. This game feels just like par for the course.

-Maybe just the way the game is designed or just me, but it feels like the game is running between 20-30 fps often.

-I have no opinion on the music, haven't noticed anything standout or bad either way.

    Pros:

-I do appreciate the dark story. If you think about it, it's really **** up at times. You'll have your first taste of this dark story during your very first fight. But not just the dark story, the story overall is VERY well put together and different from any Mario game I've played. I won't spoil anything, it's something you need to experience yourself!

-There is some clever and cute puzzles in the outer world. You need to really investigate an area sometimes to make sure you got everything from it. Sometimes I would spend several minutes trying to figure out how to get to that one ledge or spot. There's also a lot of hidden areas too which is nice.

-Bowser being an ally has some interesting implications to the story and I appreciate this change. It does get old with "Bowser bad guy again" trope.

    Overall

Overall, I think that the battle system has once again been the downfall. I'm not sure why Nintendo experiments with every iteration of this game when they know exactly what would work. If you put in the old battle system, I EASILY can give this game a 9-10. But since Nintendo can't bear to listen to its die hard fans, I have to give it a 2/10.

Back to the Bug Fables, a real "Paper Mario" game.

Definitely has its ups and downs though. The combat, in particular, was quite frustrating at times (Boss battles are fun though). I also felt that the story was lacking, and it felt a little too simplistic (are a couple of surprises though). What really kept me going was the humor and world itself. The world provides a lot of unique setpieces (not as unique as TTYD) that made the experience fun. If you're looking for a TTYD sequel, don't get this game. Starting off with the least strong suits of the game, the combat system still feels like the aspect that sticks out for being the most awkward thing about the game. It's not a bad fighting system by any means, and the incentives, this being the coins, have become better over time, but it still lacks that revamped rpg feel that we have been yearning for. For the rest of the game, I cannot find too many flaws in it. The story is engaging and filled with comedy and emotions; its characters make said story shine brighter with the amazing scripting and dialogue. You'll definitely get an feels alive handful of laughs out of this game. The world building has been done to where each new location you visit feels alive and real. The people living in each section have their own little cultures and unique quirks that interact with their environment without it feeling unnatural. I will emphasize on the characters since i felt that they're one of, if not the strongest, most enjoyable part of the game. The rosks taken by Nintendo for each dialogue and each interaction with the characters was at sometimes shocking, but always welcomed with excitement and more laughter. This especially happened with the more brutal and creepy moments, as well as the more daring comedic writing. I had an absolute blast playing this game from start to finish, and even got that special feeling of not wanting the game to end so the characters within it would keep living within such an interesting world. Color Splash might've been a small step in the right direction, but Origami King is its own gem with it's own unique feel that reaches out to many old aspects that people missed about the series while keeping its own personality intact. This game is a classic i would've loved to grow up with. Expand

If the game had addressed these issues properly, I would be placing it beside the first two entries in the series, considering it still has a lot to offer. But it looks like Nintendo has made another half-step towards what made the original entries so captivating.

Nintendo, it's time to find a new producer for Paper Mario, this can still be a series that attracts both new players and the already established fanbase. The recent VideoGamesChronical interview illustrates exactly what Kensuke Tanabe doesn't understand about the series, or simply chooses to ignore.

Overall, it's worth checking out if you're not already familiar with the franchise or enjoyed the simplicity of the last two entries. However, original fans of the series may be left underwhelmed.

The only reason i'm giving it a 10 is to help combat all these negative reviews from people that are only giving a bad score due to the fact the game is not a successor to the original paper mario or to TTYD. I didn’t like the breakable weapons. The game show part was tedious and completely unnecessary. I didn’t like the final boss fight either. It has mechanics that were completely new for that battle and were not introduced before the final boss. This made getting that last fight out of the way that much more frustrating. While yes, the combat was not the best in CS, the personality and writing in the game were just so enjoyable. When I started Origami King I went in hoping to get back that same awesome feeling of loving a Paper Mario game and I most certainly did! The combat isn't necessarily "combat" but I do really like puzzles and the game most certainly scripted that itch. The writing is hilarious with Olivia becoming one of the most adorable Mario character's ever in my opinion and also becoming one of my favorite Mario Characters too. The boss fights are sometimes genius and sometimes a real thinker of what to do. The narrative isn't anything mind-blowing and it just comes down to "Bad guy did this, go collect these" shtick all over again and the lore isn't amazing either but the personality in this game just shines through and I had a goofy grin on my face whenever someone had a word of dialogue for just how good the writing is! The graphics are amazing whether or not you don't like the "PAPER' of Paper Mario becoming more and more of a thing. I overall had a blast with this game and would only recommend it to people who love Paper Mario and not just holding onto the old games, puzzle solvers like myself, and people new to the series. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing Paper Mario since its very first release on N64 (I still remember my mom getting it for me at target) and I gotta say I had an absolute blast playing through this! I am doing my best to understand the complaints of other pessimistic reviewers but alas I think these people have succumbed to the horrible disease plaguing the human race known as "nostalgia". I think some of you other relics need to stop grasping onto a nearly 20 year old game known as TTYD and digging your puffed up expectation claws into every new Mario game. While I can't speak much on Color Splash and sticker star (haven't owned a Wii U until about 2 months ago/never bought sticker star) I would definitely say this game is equal to its "good" counterparts. I highly recommend buying this game!

    CONS (kinda):
-Battle system: Yes, you guys are right, the battle system was a bit weird at the beginning of the game. If you only played through 5 seconds of this game then you would most definitely hate it. If you are like me and enjoy a slight puzzle then its really not all that bad. The boss battles got me a little irritated at first, BUT, I stuck with it and learned how to chain the spaces together thus making me a master at boss battles! I do miss the old battle system from Paper Mario 64, however, I stopped feeding into the nostalgia trend awhile ago so for the most part I enjoy the battles. As for some of you that complain about not getting rewards, you serious Clark?? Stepping on an enemy you can easily defeat, you only get 10 coins, but you can get anywhere from 30-60 times that amount for taking the time to engage in a normal battle. So yes you do get rewarded extra, just not rewarded with items every other battle like the old days.

-Exploration: I did see a complaint in the reviews before I started playing about the world not having much to explore and I agree to an extent. There's still plenty to explore but just not as much as you would think playing through. For example places like outside the first temple, you would think there would be another area attached but nope, there's not. There is only a slight drop down to grab something, that was it. I was a little disappointed by this but once the temple was opened up my disappointment went away. Here is the counter argument to this exploration issue: Not many people want loooong drawn out areas. At times, a big area like that on a game like this can feel "overwhelming". I don't want to have to go through 50 areas just to get to the boss's door. I think they did a fairly good mixture in this game but I would have liked to see just a few more exploring areas, though not TOO many.

-Character design: I can also somewhat agree with reviewers that the character design did lack a bit. While I do not think at all they should ever get rid of the classic Mario enemies, I do think that the boss's could have gotten a slight makeover. I understood why the boss's were the way they were, but they honestly could have been less bland at times. I just remember thinking "Oh it's a... hole puncher". Y 'all really couldn't make it into like a hole punch robot or something more original? I'm not gonna dock any stars for that though because I did have fun with boss battles.

-No leveling system: I miss the leveling systems of past, I really do. All other games I play have leveling systems but this one does not. The leveling system is essentially finding a different type of "collectible". Another counter argument to this: Do any of you really miss grinding the same goombas over and over again for miniscule amounts of coins and EXP? I know I don't! This new system I think prevented grinding and wasting away your time/life on levels. I think at the end of the day I would honestly rather explore the landscape than sit in the same area for hours feeling like I barely accomplished anything.

I am running out of characters so I will try to keep my Pros list to minimum.

    PROS:

-Music: I think every paper Mario has had a few good tracks to nod your head to, but WOW the music in this game was pure gold!! Loved the vellumental boss music! sounded almost like Lindsey Stirling!

-Scenery/Artwork: A+++ for the visuals!! almost breathtaking at times! Vivid colors and very creatively pieced together landscape!

-Gameplay: I had so much fun working my way through different puzzles, scenarios, and levels! I think the creativity of the game is it what really kept me hooked! Rebuilding the world with bits of paper confetti, crumpled up toad hunting, unique boss battles, Shogun studios as a whole, Paper Macho enemies, etc. I could keep listing things but I will end it there!

The game as a whole was amazing!! I could talk about this game for hours! Definitely one I will be replaying in the future!

Possibly the best experience I've ever had with a game in my whole life, driving me to the point of literal tears. Having only played Super Paper Mario, my opinion doesn't clearly reflect those who are long time fans of the series, but I enjoyed the game nonetheless.

Storywise, it's pretty interesting. A very well executed concept for sure. The battle system may not be what everyone was looking for, but I've heard most people say that they are fairly satisfied with it. Nothing like the tedious systems of Color Splash or Sticker Star, or so I've heard. Later on the battle system gets much more punishing, but it's perfectly bearable. Characters may also not be the most unique, but the ones that are stand out in an amazing way. Even the bosses are hard to forget. I won't spoil anything that happens with the characters, but I will say that they're very memorable. The soundtrack is a big highlight. So many times I found myself bopping in my seat and cranking up the volume. I'll be listening to it for a long time. The game is also a visual treat. There are some framerate slowdowns, but usually they're forgivable for everything else happening.

I can't express a whole lot of what I loved about the game without spoiling it, which I don't want to do because it's best played without spoilers. Even watching the trailers for the game spoiled a lot for me, but it was still okay. I loved the game for what it is, and I won't be forgetting it any time soon. Please pick it up, and don't listen to the TTYD and 64 fans as they bomb this review section. It'll be worth your time, roughly 30 hours if you take your time.

I'm sure this will get disliked, but I'm 2-3 days into Origami King and the game is really good. The environments are amazing, jam-packed with stuff to do, puzzles to solve and stories to tell. The music is stellar. Like color splash, the game looks gorgeous. And the writing is superb and the characters are really funny and interesting. The environments are amazing, jam-packed with stuff to do, puzzles to solve and stories to tell. The music is stellar. Like color splash, the game looks gorgeous. And the writing is superb and the characters are really funny and interesting. Olivia is definitely a standout partner in this game - I really like her - she's naive, witty, funny, honest, etc.

The game isn't perfect. The tutorials at the beginning are a bit drown out and I wish I could have skipped them. Anyone who watched the trailers probably knows how the basics of the game works already. There's also some weird resource mechanics where you have finite supplies of resources - like confetti, gold and items - but everything is so plentiful I am not sure why it's finite in the first place. It's a shame we can't control our partners in battle, but I don't really miss the loss the xp progression - the game has other ways to progress in the form of accessories, heart containers, items, etc.

As someone who loved ttyd and rpgs in general, I thought the puzzle-like battle system would bother me a lot, but it hasn't. Most battles are required to progress in the story, or at least make it so you don't have enemies chasing you constantly in the environment. Beating them is not pointless like some say because you have to beat them to progress in the story. Solving the same in-battle ring puzzles can get a bit boring and most of them are easy, but it hasn't really been such a major problem to drown out the rest of the game. The rest of the game is so great that the overall experience is still great. I really have fun playing it.

Oh, and the boss battles are a lot of fun and each one has different mechanics. At first, they are not too difficult, but by the 4th boss, things definitely ramp up. They hit like a truck too, doing 40-75 damage at this part in the game.

Overall, I'm really happy with Origami King. It is a game with lots of polish and love put into it. It just has so much charm, and it does so much so well. I would have given it a 10 if the battle system incorporated your companions more and offered more depth than just solving the puzzle, but I think the environments, the writing, the sound track and the bosses steal the show that I really do think this game deserves a 9/10.

I think anyone giving this game a lower score than 8 just because it's named "paper mario" but is not designed the same way as TTYD is being dishonest. A game needs to be judged on its own merits. It's hard to take these people seriously when the game could have had a different title, like "Mario's Origami Adventure" and it would suddenly have a better rating using their review standard. It's frankly a dishonest way to review games. For better or worse, the series has changed - it's been over 15 years since TTYD - the old rpgs games have essentially been discontinued. I miss them too, but that doesn't make Origami King an objectively "bad" game.

Part of me doesn't really understand how Nintendo fans of zelda or mario or metroid would not like this game - it's an adventure game like many other Nintendo games. Do these ttyd fans only play rpgs? If so, then I understand why they don't like it, but wow that's a pretty niche interest to only like rpgs on a Nintendo console while disliking all of the other adventure/action games Nintendo has on offer..... seems a bit biased/close-minded if you ask me. If you like Zelda, you would like this, whether you like or rpgs or not.

Es un juego altamente disfrutable por todo el mundo pero debes tener una mente abierta para jugarlo y darle una oportunidad, que sin duda la merece.

For what the series is, a goofy spin on the Mario universe, Origami King does not disappoint. I came in expecting a slightly cringe, pun-filled, and charming story and that's what I got it.

However, I am giving an 8 because of the lack of difficultly. Yes, I know I mentioned not looking for a challenge here, but hear me out. There could have been a FAIR (not unforgiving) challenge with the battle system they have designed under all of the hand holding Nintendo insists on including in Mario Games. While I understand this game was designed for children, I think an assist mode implemented similar to Mario Odysseys would have helped the game get a better score from me. I finished the game charmed, but lacking a sense of accomplishment.

An optional "assist pad" or something during challenging fights instead of littering your path with hearts when your HP is low would have been better. I beat every boss first try. The battle system could have offered a fulfilling challenge and feel that it was wasted to avoid rage quits.

The game is quick to just "give away" puzzles, too. If a puzzle takes you more than a few minutes to solve, the game will just spoil it for you, or give an option to pay to skip it with coins. On one occasion, I accidentally spent 3000 coins on a skip while spamming A during a dialogue sequence and felt very salty for awhile.

Regardless, this is no Color Splash. If you are a Paper Mario fan, don't skip this one!

    Hated it.

The fights are unrewarding and blindingly tedious. I was avoiding engaging in battles altogether within about an hour of starting. And I sighed every time the next step was, "oh, hey, why don't you go fight that Koopa in the corner!?" Ugh, really? Can't we just say that I did that and you can give me whatever I need to move forward? Really dude. Here, have ten thousand coins.

And, although it is an open map, and although there are goals to reach in each stage -- which gives at least the impression that you will be able to go back and complete these tasks later on -- the game just ends very unceremoniously after the final boss battle. Here's some credits, now either go fight the final boss again or start over from the beginning... or play something else, I guess.... thanks for the sixty bucks, sucka!

It's VERY cute. Two points for beautiful art and a fun-ish storyline. That kept me engaged enough to actually finish the game. I just expected... I dunno...... more. I really enjoyed the open map format and exploring. That gave it a sort of Zelda-y explore-y feel that I really appreciated. But I was majorly disappointed that there was no post-game activity.

I definitely won't charge head first into the series ever again.

So yeah, there's quite a bit of wasted potential in the combat system, but it's still tons of fun. The bosses are extremely fun as well, but man the office supplies designs are just so bad and lazy. They could have designed an origami monster based on them, not just slap real life office supplies that look really out of place, but i gotta say, they are really creative with their attacks. The world is a ton of fun to explore, and there is so much to do and collect, and the art direction and music are just fantastic. The story could have been better, the concept is good but so much more could have been done, but it still had his great moments (that i won't spoil here, of course). However, i love the dialogues in this game, they are really entertaining and some of them really made me crack up laughing. I still really miss the diverse character design of 64/TTYD or the Mario & Luigi games, but they still did a good job on giving each character an identity. Also i love how they made the classic mario enemies into origami figures, they look fantastic. So yeah, i think this game is really fun unlike dumpsterfires like SPM, SS and CS and worth playing, however some dumb decisions really bring it down. Can't wait to know what they have in store for us in the next paper mario game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, I just finished this game and loved it. I want to leave this to share my thoughts and also combat people giving the game a zero because of one specific reason or other. The game is really fun. First of all, the music and graphics are amazing. The story is pretty good, though I feel the yellow streamer or "world 3" was a bit long and tedious (thus the 9 instead of ten). The jokes were all pretty funny, and while a few might have been lost in translation, there are plenty of good ones. The combat seems to be something people don't like, so here are my thoughts on that. I want to preface this with saying, I think that even if the combat was completely awful, one aspect of the game shouldn't define your entire review and cause you to give it a zero. I enjoyed the combat, and it did get a bit repetitive sometimes. Here's the thing, it's pretty optional. You can just not engage a lot of enemies, and the ones you have to are fun. A lot of people complain that you don't get anything from battles other than worthless coins. On that, I think coins aren't worthless. You need a lot of them, for weapon buying, for finding collectibles, for side quests, and what not. There was not a single point in the whole game where I thought I had too many coins with nothing to use them on, and several times thought "I need more coins". Overall, the game is really fun, the story is sweet and actually made me cry at one point, and the jokes land for all ages. A great game. Expand

Gone are theI had to temper my emotional attachment to the first two games so that I wouldn't rate this game too harshly. In the interest of full disclosure, I absolutely love the first two Paper Mario games and detest what Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have done with the series since. If you are hoping this game will be a return to form for the series, read no further and walk away. Gone are the days of brilliant character writing, deceptively deep combat, and beautiful storytelling. You will be disappointed. The game even seems to have amnesia about how the Paper Mario universe operates (see: Bombette's explosions). However. If, you can ignore that the game has "Paper Mario" in the title, it's a mediocre action/adventure puzzle game with a Mario paint job. Let's talk about the good in this game first. The art style is phenomenal. The world is vibrant and it certainly looks like a gorgeous, modern visual style for the series. I would love to see a Paper Mario or Thousand Year Door remake with this graphical engine. The music is great. There are some actually great songs in the game in certain cutscenes and boss battles that are some of the best in the series. The story is mediocre, but its highs are truly great and I found myself enjoying the plot despite its flaws. If you are a completionist, the game has a great tracking and hint system for the collection broken down by area. I actually found searching for Toads to be the most enjoyable part of the gameplay. Now why is this game itself mediocre? At its heart, it's a puzzle game. The game has some RPG elements, but nothing about it is really anything like an RPG. There are no level ups, no permanent weapon upgrades, or new abilities. Instead, upgrades come in the form of flat health/strength upgrades and consumable weapons. The battle system revolves (ha) around rearranging enemies on a circular grid to line them up for Mario's attacks. For the first few hours of the game, I was frustrated because of how easy these puzzles were. By the end, I was frustrated by the difficulty. Difficulty in a puzzle game is not bad at all, but artificially inflated difficulty is. The source of my frustration wasn't that the puzzles themselves had jumped in difficulty (which is a good thing), but that there is a strict timer enforcing the puzzle. You can pay coins to extend your timer or ask Toads to do the puzzle for you, but that's missing the point. By the end, the game is a puzzle game that doesn't want you to solve its puzzles. Instead, you need to buy accessories to extend your timer and pay large sums of coins just to add 60 seconds. Without that god forsaken timer, I would add a point to my score. Lastly are the controls. If you expect Mario to jump and move and spin etc... like he does in a main series entry or even just in any other paper mario game, you will be disappointed. The controls range from mildly functional to infuriating. Searching for hidden blocks will have you screaming, "but I jumped there!" even with all of the searching helpers equipped. I watched the trailer for this game and thought it might be like the first two golden titles. I had great and high hopes for this game. I wanted a deep badge system and level ups. I wanted a roster of interesting characters with unique and useful abilities, both inside and outside of battle. I wanted a deep story with interesting and emotional developments (see: TTYD). I wanted all of these things and would've been happy to get even a handful. I got none of these things. In summary, taken as it is with no association to the first two entries in the series, it's a mediocre action/adventure puzzle game with some nice highlights. However, if you're anything like me and hoped this would be a series rebirth to times of greatness past, it's a great disappointment. It made me want a true Paper Mario game more than ever, but that game is in another castle... Expand

The new battle system is unique I'll give you that, but after awhile it just draws out battles to be longer then they need to be and it makes you wish for even the Sticker Star / Color Splash battles to return because they at least ended quickly.

Overall it's a fine game, but the stubbornness of the developers to include a battle systems closer to the originals that was simpler to grasp and faster to use or any RPG mechanics that made you feel like battling was actually worth doing holds back what could have been a fantastic 9 or 10 out of 10 game.

The interviews show the games a disappointment due to the devs being very restricted so I'd recommend to not buy this game to send the higher ups at Nintendo that it's their faults the series has missed out on so many good chances to be good again instead of rehashes of Sticker Star. The Paper Mario series as a whole feels like it is developed by people who either do not understand or care about fan feedback. No, I’m not one of those people who want it to be like the original “Mario Story” games. It is okay to deviate and attempt to innovate from what you did before.

That being said, it feels like each new game in the series is the same bland, generic, linear game

That being said, it feels like each new game in the series is the same bland, generic, linear game we’ve seems since Sticker Star. There’s no heart or “Mario” vibe given, it could just as easily be a generic puzzle game with a Mario skin plastered on it. Characters aren’t unique, and there was not one character or even that was memorable.

I hope Nintendo can finally attempt to do something acceptable in the next release, and why they can’t just do what worked before. Strange how they release nearly identical 2D “New” Mario games yet the Paper Mario Series always attempts something new that falls on its face every time.

so i just finished PAPER MARIO: THE ORIGAMI KING. the review. non spoiler review, not paid to review, all my own personal opinions.

    first the good
    -graphics are always great
    -gameplay feels smooth
-lots of new characters and story to indulge yourself into until the next big nintendo game releases
-new mechanics that bring a fresh style into the new series especially compared to sticker+color

now the bad...which is a lot
-confetti is just as bad as paint. please stop doing this
-story is very lackluster and doesnt pull you in like past games do.
-you dont remember the characters. for majority of the game since i barely heard olivias name i thought her name was candice

-the new fighting system still sucks and i hate it with a passion. after you get used to it you still learn to hate it with new stuff they bring in mid/end way into the game
-theirs no replayability. this is a game you'll play once and probably never want to touch again

-literally you cant replay it. you'll find out why when you get it lol.
-no actual rpg elements here with no xp so you dont have an incentive to actually fight. i was going out of my way to dodge every single little fight i could.
-bosses are horrible and so are mini bosses

    OVERALL
personal score 4/10 i put it in the same category with sticker and color. this is nothing of a throwback to the good old games.

score i would give people: 5/10 if you are bored and want to try paper mario then give it a shoot. if youve played past games not worth money.

The Origami King has its ups and downs. In a year that we have no idea what Nintendo has in store for us. It feels more like an appetizer then a main course. I did have fun with it regardless of some game design choices and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario: The Origami King is a beautiful game with an interesting premise, that doesn't quite live up to the expectations of fans who long for TTYD. I won't gripe about the battle system, as my own thoughts are already echoed in several other reviews.

I loved the origami toads. You know the ones hidden ALL OVER the landscape? It made the world feel populated, and some of the puzzles to rescue them were ingenious and really required thinking outside the box. I was a bit disappointed when this mechanic disappeared from the last main area.

There are two understated parts of this game I would like to address, and would very much like to see more of; The first is integrating Boswer's minions into the NPCs as genuine characters. I'm sure this is a Paper Mario staple; I've only played SPM, and I don't count Sticker Star. But it was fun to see them going to a theme park (in cosplay, no less!) or sitting in a coffee house. it was invigorating to see them non-antagonistic, even friendly, towards Mario and the toads.

The other is the use of aside-dialogue in cutscenes. Even in normal gameplay, speech bubbles would pop up from characters as they mutter under their breath or try to get your attention. It made the world feel dynamic and alive, and much more integrated into Mario's adventure than in previous games.

However, I will address what dropped this game, for me, from a 8 or a 9 to a 7. The end of the story. Origami King picks up the baton from previous Paper Mario games like SPM when it comes to storytelling, only to drop it five feet from the finish line. It was abrupt, sad, and a bit confusing. The titular king's motivations are revealed to be thinner than the paper he is made of, and the method chosen to undo his actions end up... well, making it feel like the game never happened. I sat there wondering why I had just played the game. To make it worse, I can't find any sort of post-game other than completionism. I was left with a sudden feeling of "...wait, that's it?"

My other main gripe is that Princess Peach doesn't get to do anything. It's series like Paper Mario where the characters are allowed to break out of their standard roles a bit. Yeah, she still gets captured, but let her break out or be rescued and contribute to the plot! I almost forgot she was part of the game.

I really wanted to like Origami King, and I even recommended it to friends before I finished playing. I loved the journey, but I'm not sure the destination was worth the trip.

I got 100% and had a blast doing it, definitely the best completion experience in the series. I never felt the need to use a guide, despite the fact that some moments can be pretty challenging. If you're looking for a fun action adventure with strong puzzle elements TOK is a game you should consider checking out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The overworld is so beautiful. Soundtrack and Looks are perfect for a Mario game like this. Mechanics is where it lacks. Battles are boring to a point where avoiding them is a better option, since your items break after some time. Exp? None. Actual rewards for battling? Coins. Just coins. The whole battle has been made unnecessary and annoying. Boss battles are better than Standart fights, yet the lack in creativity and become boring after the second boss. Apart from that I must say that the Overworld game play is extremely fun and well made. All those collectibles are fun to get and it's designed beautifully. In general it's a great game with unnecessary flaws. You could have done better Intelligent System.
One last thing before I'm done. WHY THE HECK IS THERE A REWARD FOR COLLECTING ALL COINS IN THAT STUPID BOAT RIDE. Sorry I exaggerated a bit there, but for real its just frustrating and annoying. Yet a decent game. Would only recommend if you liked all Paper Mario's. And I mean ALL.

It’s only after exploring do they find Peach has been turned to origami, Bowser has been folded up into a tiny piece of paper and all his minions have been turned into origami as well. After a quick trip to the dungeon, we uncover our companion for this game, the little origami fairy Olivia. We find her through the use of the “10000 Fold Arms” much like Colour Splash borrowed from the new kid in Splatoon, Mario’s doing it again and this time with ARMS.

Origami King plays a lot like Color Splash, with a giant papercraft world to explore that is now littered with origami versions of enemies, and I’m not gonna lie these new designs are actually pretty creative and a touch creepy if I do say so myself. There are flat versions of enemies too, but everyone’s decided to put their differences aside in the face of a common enemy. Bits of the world have also been just straight up chewed up, by what exactly? By Giant Paper Mache Goombas and its fascinating seeing the construct of these creatures, complete with wire holding them together, the same can be said for chunks of the world that are now an empty void with coathanger wire that you need to throw confetti on to repair. Confetti is found literally everywhere, much like Color Splash you acquire the world repairing element by wacking everything in sight

As for combat, Color Splash’s card system did leave a lot to be desired. But at least it was straight forward. Origami, on the other hand, wants to turn every boss fight into its own puzzle. While the staple action commands are still present, move sets have been reduced to just Boots and Hammers, no Special Moves. Battles are played out on this ring with Mario in the middle with enemies splayed out in rows and columns and it is up to you, in a limited amount of moves with a ticking clock, to arrange your opponents to achieve maximum damage. With this system, the real challenge is lining up your enemies properly, making the actual combat feel redundant. It is even worse when it comes to Boss Battles, during those the boss is in the middle and you have to find your way to them via arrows that lead to the right combination to attack. Fortunately, you are able to gain support by throwing great gobs of cash everywhere.

Origami King has an abundance of two things, money and Toads, there isn’t a moment you are not earning moolah and by the first hour, I had already hit over 10K. Toads, on the other hand, have all met the fate of Olly and have ended up folded, scrunched and stuffed in all sorts of places, there is even a Toad Tracker that utilises HD Rumble to help locate them from a faint reading to they are right beneath you.

The varied sensitivity works really well in looking for them, and you are going to want to find them, as they have brought back one feature of Thousand Year Door….kind of. Your battles are watched on by an ever growing audience of Toads who will even help you out if you throw enough coins there way, these really help in Boss Battles as it allows an arrow on the screen to plan your moves properly. The amount of money you find is so staggering, and it is so easy to buy new weapons, it ALMOST makes up for the degradation of fancier boots and hammers……almost.

As well as HD Rumble the game utilises motion controls for some of its more special moves. Using the extend-o arms require certain controls like hitting and pulling, while they can be turned off I honestly found it more reliable using them over the thumbstick.

One of the most missed features from previous Paper titles is the lack of a party joining you on your journey, thankfully Origami King has brought that back…..kind of (kind of). You will have characters join you like a Bob-omb with amnesia or an archeologist Toad, but they don’t stick around for long and you don’t even control them in battle. There was a moment where we were blocked by boulders and the Bob-omb wondered what they should do.

If it sounds like I’m continuously knocking on the game, it’s only because it is such a mixed bag. The world is absolutely stunning, especially the new enemy designs and the completionist in me loves finding all the Toads and holes to fill. But on the other hand, the game is plagued with niggling issues including the complexity of the ring battle system potentially driving new players away. It isn’t fair to compare Origami King to Thousand Year Door though, cause quite frankly it’s not trying to be. The Paper Mario series has pretty much left the RPG genre in favour of a 3D Platformer/Strategy style. Instead of dismissing Origami King for what it isn’t, it should be appreciated for what its trying to be, problems aside there was some great moments here.

Not as great as the gameplay in older games, but it passes. The story is surprisingly dark! Sure, maybe the stakes aren't as high as in a game like super paper mario, but this game still has its moments that can be some of the most emotional in the entire series. The writing is hilarious as usual, and one of my favorite parts of the game. I loved going from location to location waiting to see what ridiculous situations the developers came up with. Seriously, this game is worth buying simply for the yellow streamer area alone. I laughed out loud many times during my playthrough of this game, possibly even more than color splash. And by the way, the ending is awesome. Not just the scene right before the credits roll, but the several hours of gameplay leading up to it had some of the most intense and even creepy moments the series has ever seen. There are a couple of issues here and there, which is why I can't quite bring myself to give this a full 10/10, but it was still an incredible experience for me, even as someone who despised sticker star. I will be brief-ish since others have spoken more eloquently on the subject; this game is great if you want to play a mario puzzle game. But it is not really an RPG, nor a paper mario game. It plays more like super mario bros with a paper mario skin. Why does Nintendo hate their adult fans? We are the ones who helped you sell all those NES, SNES, Gameboys, N64s, and Wiis. So why take a beloved IP and alter it beyond all recognition? No turn based combat or badges, no partners in battle, no unique or interesting character models, overly simplistic story. They took the worst parts of Sticker Star and Color Splash and removed anything interesting. Any game where battles are a waste of resources to be avoided is no fun, especially when it is an RPG. Why Nintendo? WHY?! At least remake Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door. I will give you money! Please! It's not even the same game anymore! Expand

It's not 1000 year door but this game is pretty awesome. I highly recommend this game if you are new to the paper mario series or new to rpgs in general, a great game to introduce new people to the genre. I enjoy the puzzle/battle mechanic. Great game!

I feel like this is on par to be one of my favorite games on switch. I do NOT have any experience with previous Paper Mario games. I know this game has had conflicting reviews with fans of the series. The combat puzzles are fun, some of the puzzles are challenging, the jokes are subtle and very funny, and the art is beautiful. I'm a big fan.

After giving up on sticker star and color splash, did I enjoy Paper Mario: The Origami King? Short answer yes. And I even loved it.

    The Gameplay
This Paper Mario entry is very similar to the old Paper Mario games when it comes to exploring the world. You meet new townspeople like normal Mario enemies, talk to them and discover a new story with a problem that you have to solve. It is really fun to explore the world and discover more about the world. Especially because the writing in this game is absolutely amazing.

The most controversial part of this game is the battle system. How I would describe it is a mix of the old paper Mario battle system and match 4. It is different but things that are different are not always bad. Which sometimes fans seem to think so. The battle is system offers complex encounters especially when there are a lot of enemies. Where you need to think fast and perform your attacks. It offers quite a challenge and I found myself attacking every enemy I came across.

The only downside so far is that the intro is pretty slow which might become an issue if you plan on replaying the entire game multiple times.

    Style
The graphics are simply amazing. If this game was running on a PS4 or XBONE I would have believed you. Everything looks stunning from the 2d paper to the 3D origami. The music is absolute amazing as well. Especially the star man theme.

In conclusion Paper Mario: The Origami King is an amazing game with beautiful music and graphics. The battle system is new and a lot of fun. If you have a switch and need to decide which is your next game. This is an absolute contender if you love fun gameplay, good stories and good music.

Like my dad always says "Don't hate it, because it is different'.

    9/10

PS Listen to that star man theme!! You won't regret it.

    - Not a RPG
    - Battle System is horrible
    - The first 3 Mario RPGs still way better then this
    - It feels like an Ubisoft game (fill 1000 holes here, find 100000 Toads there)

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
