Try harder Nintendo. Maybe team with Square and rerelease Super Mario RPG to give us something worth playing.

It’s combat is a mix between turn based RPG battles and ring puzzles. The puzzles gain you an attack bonus, and get pretty damn complicated as the game goes on. It’s bosses come in two forms, Vulumentals and Legion of Stationary. Vulamentals are origami beasts that look like bosses you would see in a traditional RPG. Legion of Stationary bosses are office supplies (You learn why as you play the game) that became sentient. They are normally guarding streamers that engulf peaches castle. Along your journey you can free toads, collect treasures, and fill in holes with confetti. Collected toads show up in battle. You can pay them in coins to do special actions in battle, and help you defeat enemies. I think most of the games mechanics work great, and the battles aren’t nearly as repetitive as SS or CS. The main twist is the weapons. They are more powerful than your normal attacks. You can buy them, but be sure to be stocked up as they will break eventually. It’s weapon durability system isn’t nearly as brutal as BoTWs so you don’t need to spend too many coins on them. But stronger enemies will be much easier with the high end weapons, so be sure to have the right amount. It isn’t the Paper Mario for everyone, but it’s still pretty damn good. Expand

I have been totally excited to get my hands on a new Paper Mario and have always been a huge fan of Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door, which is a classic.

The new title in the series has funny dialogues and great cutscenes but fights are a total turn-off. The circles and enemy placements are not really fair. And in boss fights it gets really annoying to place all the rings

Apart from that enemies do quite a lot more damage than expected when Mario is hit

Would have loved to see some normal stage fights again...

I can deal with the removed RPG elements and maybe even some repetitive combat. Unfortunately, not only are combat and puzzle-solving exceedingly easy and boring, they are also disproportionately time-consuming and unrewarding.

Sadly, this is a game best reserved for little children and their appreciation for the pretty colors.

The game is similar to sticker star and color splash with no exp and optional battles, but it also pulls elements from the original games such as more unique landscapes, as well as more open world enviorments, not to mention the addition of partners (sorta). The game has some cool gimmicks, and whether your filling all the holes with confetti, finding all the missing toads, or collecting all the trophies (which there are a lot of), your sure to have a blast in the newest addition to the franchise. The battle system in the game takes more if a puzzle-like approach, having the player lineup the enemies in a way that they can be taken out before launching their attack. This is a very cool concept, and personally, I live the way it functions in the game. However with all the optional enemy battles littered throughout different areas, it may get repetitive and mayne even boring after a little while. Another main piece of the game is the puzzles, which their is a plethora of. These puzzles, however, are never too grueling, and if younger or more inexperienced players need help they can ask olivia ( your partner throughout the game) for a hint on how to complete it. Th e boss system is very similar to the normal battle system, except instead of mario being in the center attacking his enemies, you have yo solve a puzzle to get to the center to attack the boss, which I adore. Not to mention, each boss brings a creative new gimmick to keep the player guessing on what will happen next. Overall, I think the Origami King is a really good game, and one that truly deserves your time. I had a blast playing through it myself, and while it may not live up to the originals glory, it is an overall really solid title in the franchise. Expand

Filling holes with confetti is the same thing as painting the white spots and it's a terrible idea. Nobody wants to run around hitting everything with a hammer just to be able to fill in the holes. Especially when the only reward for doing so is more coins. The battles are nothing more than tedious. Absolutely no point in doing them and you will find yourself avoiding them to the best of your abilities only to let out a sigh of disappointment when you actually do have to do them. The partners are awful and add absolutely zero value to the game. Olivia atleast had a little bit of creativity but her personality is terrible and all she ever does is repeat the things someone else already said, or say what just happened right in front of you. The main boss designs? Are some of the dumbest I've ever seen. When you use a box of colored pencils as a box, that is complete laziness in my opinion. The jokes are terrible and they never stop. Every chapter has insanely cringe song and dance. Exploration in this game is not rewarding in the slightest. You either find more coins when you always have 10k+ or you find a useless little statue thing that you will never go and look at again. This whole thing with rescuing Toads really needs to not be a thing anymore. There's like 100 Toads to find in every chapter. It really feels like that's all I'm doing is finding Toads and they don't even have any distinct differences. It's just always the same looking Toad. Literally hundreds of times.

The only redeeming qualities of this game is the world is beautiful. The art team really did go all in with that. Personally I think they went a little too far with the paper aspect of it, but I can't say the world doesn't look really nice. The music, not the cringe song and dance they keep trying to force us to laugh at, but each area's music, the battle music, etc, those are almost all really well done. The boss fights were kinda fun for the first half of the game, but the second half of the game feels more like "let's just hurry up and get this done".

I mark this game at a 2 because it IS better than SS or CS but it's still an awful game.

Many enemies are skippable, thankfully, and I think this helps make up for the tedium of the regular battles. While they are useful, you'll find that you can have way more than you need without really trying. And although the world looks pretty, it just doesn't feel as good wandering through it as you avoid every enemy like the plague. I'll say one positive note is the boss battles; while they are as generic and lame as could possibly be, the fights themselves are fun, and involve a bit of strategic planning to do the most damage.
In summary, if you look at this as just a mario game, and ignore the fact that it has a Paper in the title, it's a serviceable entry to the series. It is ABSOLUTELY not a true Paper Mario game, but a pretty middle-of-the-road Mario game. Play it if you like the visuals and want to experience the story, but pass it if you think it's going to be the next best Paper Mario game you've been waiting for.

Extremely mediocre gameplay that had me avoiding enemies just because I didn't want to deal with the battle mechanics. The story is bland and uninspired and dull. What few characters there are have little interesting going for them and feel paper thin. Whatever you're looking for in a game, there is a better option than this.

It’s not TTYD, but that’s okay! This game is fun in its own right with hilarious writing, beautiful set designs, and puzzling battles that can be quite tough if you mess up! The whole time I’ve played it, I haven’t wanted to put it down!

It's a good game, however the 1st chapter is basically one long and slow tutorial. If you can endure that, then you will enjoy the rest of the game after. Because of the poor start, I can't reasonably give this game a 9/10. It is a solid 8/10 game for the variety they managed to put in this game, mixing elements from all previous Paper Mario games and simplifying some things. They could have made the opening so much better but unfortunately they didn't. They saved all the good ideas for chapter 2 and onward.

This game does not deserve to be rated lower than Color Splash, and anyone who has played Origami King will see this game is definitely worth the 8/10 I am giving it.

RPGs at their core have a focus on characters, dialog, and the quest. Origami King delivers on all these so it is definitely an RPG. The rest (leveling system, skills, and turn-based combat) is all optional and diverse among different RPGs.

Leveling: Rather than gaining xp from individual battles, you level up after each boss. You don't have a visible numbered level, but your base damage increases and you can one shot weaker enemies from the previous area outside of battle. Your hp increases from this and side quests as well, Zelda heart container-style.

Also small note here, battles are not pointless. They give you resources and progress the story. The way the battles are designed is so that it is pointless to GRIND them. This is a good thing in my opinion, since you never have to needlessly battle enemies on repeat like in past games. Origami King gives you plenty of tools at your disposal so the entire game is a grind-free experience. The fact that people are complaining they can't grind for more xp shows that they are not expecting newer games to be smarter and more seamless.

The game is structured so that you essentially complete 2 dungeons and 2 bosses per world. So the pacing at which your power increases is well done here. Battling extra grunts for xp is not a thing here and frankly I'm glad, such a thing is not necessary and would only make the game more tedious if it was present.

The fighting system starts off deceptively too easy, however the further you go into the game the more challenging it gets. You WILL get to a point where you are stumped to solve it and have to use items to creatively find an alternate path to success. Thankfully the game gives you the tools and chances for a fair shot at figuring out a way to win without being too easy.

The game gives you lots of HP and healing items to start with. However by as early as the 2nd boss you will be hit with large amounts of damage that can give you a game over if you're not careful.

One of the biggest disappointments is a lack of partners. They aren't playable and don't have unique abilities. They are just tagging along, one at a time, and just deal one decently strong attack every so often.

Things I liked about the game
-the soundtrack as well as sound design in general was very well made and enjoyable -every single area in this game looks GORGEOUS
-the dialogue made me chuckle plenty of times -the new characters introduced are at the very least intriguing if not super explored

    Things I didn’t like
-the game doesn’t even resemble an RPG, one of the main aspects of the older titles, which are the more appreciated games in the series
-the battle system is literally just solving puzzles with no element of strategy. It gets old relatively quickly, and doesn’t do much besides give you coins, considering there’s no exp -the games length is SUPER LONG, which would normally be a compliment if it weren’t for so many parts just slowing you down and intentionally causing problems, just to drag out the gameplay and make the campaign longer with no real fun mechanic or gameplay to it

Overall, I will say it’s a good game, but still brought down by some serious flaws

¡Me encanta! Totalmente satisfecho.

It wasn't bad but people really need to stop buying this game because Nintendo will continue to release this tiresome rpg that only appeals to kids. Three times in a row they don't listen to fans. It's the same ole story and game play. The rpg elements in this game are lackluster and boring. If you hated Sticker Star and Color Splash then you will definitely hate this one.

The game has tremendous heart despite a lack of unique character design as seen in previous entries (pre Sticker Star) but the game works with what it has and it does it extremely well. It was revealed that Miyamoto was the one that limited Paper Mario from modifying any flagship characters, so he’s really the one to blame for that, but they even joke about the lack of diversity between characters in the game itself. I have to forgive it, they’re working with what they got. The combat is something I thought I would hate, but I actually really like it!I see people complaining that, due to the lack of XP, there is “no motivation to battle” but that’s simply not true. You get a LOT of coins from battles, and you can’t really get that many coins elsewhere in the game. Throughout the game, there are various shops you find that sell collectibles and attack boosts/damage reducers. Basically like leveling up. The incentive is there, just a little more complicated. This game does NOT deserve to be review bombed just because it’s not TTYD 2. It’s great in its own right. Expand

And when it comes to RPGs, I am sure that most of them come from the USA and Spain, countries where most RPG fans live.
Latin America countries are almost happy, because their mind is more open to platformer games and they know little about RPGs.
Paper Mario is actually a good game if you look at it from another perspective, you need to "be" a fresh and new player who is unfamiliar with RPGs, and you will see the game is actually very good, but if you are a angry old gamer, you will see it as trash because you have other expectatives which is terrible way to review a game.
It is called Paper Mario but it does not mean that it must be RPG game, it's only Mario made in paper. There are A LOT of RPG games already, you really want more? Don't have selfish thoughts!

The normal battles are very easy and only a few times did I fail to complete a puzzle from battling. If you are running of time, you can pay for more time, if you can't figure out the first step, you can pay 150 coins to get the first part of the answer. Coins are very common and worthless as they can be found respawning in the world or after finishing a battle. This makes battles nearly impossible to lose. Battles don't give you anything other than coins and confetti since both are very common in the world, they make battles pointless. To do more damage during battles, you need weapons that you can buy or find for free in the world. Weapons break so you'll need to keep getting new and better weapons as they break. I've never needed to buy any weapons as I found the free weapons were more than enough to get me through the whole game. Later in the game, some bosses start having one hit OKs and they are pretty BS but at least avoidable, but avoiding them makes them super easy. I also didn't like the bosses, most of them were way too easy and short or annoying. The elemental bosses were super annoying. I did like a few of them tho, not going to so which because I don't want to spoil it.

The world is very pretty and looks very nice. Mario moves very slow and doesn't do anything but walk making moving around very boring and long. Some areas have vehicles and they were fun to drive at first, but halfway through, they overstay their welcome. You can fill in the world with confetti to get more coins or new areas or find toads to maybe get something or nothing. I found both boring so I never wasted my time on them. You have to go around and destroy the streamers blocking the entrance to peach's cattle, doing so lets you hold more confetti, which is useless since you can easily to get more.

However, I can say is that there are small sections of the game where the game mixes things up in the overworld with some fun random event. I'm not going to say exactly to avoid spoilers. But, It's what kept me coming back to play. It had me guessing what's the next random thing they'll do.

Overall, there are fun and funny moments but my problem is that in between is very boring and pointless gameplay. So, I'm mixed but leaning towards didn't like it.

At the beginning the art is beautiful, the music is ok and the history seems interesting, the music is ok and the first time you open your menu you star to imagine all the cool stuff it will come in this game (unfortunatelly is just your imagination)...

    Cons
Later in the game (so much later due tons of text) you have your first fight
After the first fights you realize that you receive no experience nor points nor material for crafting, nothing, just a bored useless fight, then there is no point in fighting and then you just try to avoid fighting every time you can and when the minions get you to have a fight is really ANOYING even more the WAVE FIGHTS
You get deeper in the game, in fact you have been playing for HOURS and Olivia (your yellow Origami "Navi") is still giving you instructions about HOW TO FIGHT
Finally when you defeat the first boss and you met your first party member you start thinking that the game mechanics will change for good... but NO... your partner is useless, you can't command him to make any attack or something is just literally SLEEPING while you are fighting

So yes... this is a bad game, with bad fight mechanics and you will spent hours and hours on trying to avoid the origami soldiers minions and find hidden useless toads just for fun...

It offers some above average music, immense charm, and amazing stylzed visuals. The plot, while bland, is dealt with in interesting ways and has great writing. The world is a perfectly constructed paper diorama and the game has a good amount of content. While the game offers some exploration it is pretty linear and no area is really big enough to be considered "open" but rather thick corridors. In the overworld, Mario can only jump and use his hammer which makes most puzzles one-dimensional and forgettable. The world has collectible Toads that come with a "puzzle" element, which are fun to collect but boil down to "use your hammer" and help a little with building your audience. The game also has a confetti mechanic which is completely frivilous, you watch a lengthy animation and fill holes for a meager amount of coins. This is especially annoying for completionist types because you can see them everywhere, but you know they are meaningless busywork. The conffetti so pointless it seems the only reason they added it was because Color Splash had it, which makes no sense given how much this game strives to be different. The combat is probably my biggest gripe with the game, you can slide one row or shift one column at a time. The combat is fun at first, but very quickly the battle puzzles become far too easy and enemies are decimated in a single turn. There is very little depth to the combat and because of how it is setup, requires the game to throw 10-15 enemies per battle at the player at once. This means you have to slowly watch Mario kill each individual enemy which becomes super repetitive and slows gameplay to a crawl. Worse, Mario gains nothing but coins from battle which are so common the reward for battle doesn't really exist. This sometimes puts the game in a place where to play it, you want to actively avoid playing it. I believe that is a sign of a bad video game even if it has many other great strengths. If they used a more well-thought out combat system(which doesn't even need to be the TTYD's, just anything good) and removed the stupid mechanic where you fill in holes for no reason this game could easily be a 9/10, but players should not feel like they want to avoid the game while playing it. Los gráficos me parecen muy innovadores y conservadores pero siempre es más de lo mismo, basta de mario.

Paper Mario: the Origami King is a confused game. Many of the justifications and changes made to the series in recent years have been focused around making the game accessible to “all players” or the causal crowd. Many of the justifications and changes made to the series in recent years have been focused around making the game accessible to “all players” or the causal crowd. Such a policy is in line with Nintendo’s game making philosophies, but PA:OK misses this mark and the mark for veteran appeal as well. The vocabulary and writing in this game is both snappy and enjoyable. However, it’s written closer to a 9th grade level then the standard 6th, meaning many younger kids will not understand what they’re reading. The puzzles for the combat is fairly straightforward. However, number our challenges, especially the boss battles will more then likely be too difficult for children to complete. However, as the puzzles possess no real motivation to be completed, i.e. the only reward is coins a a small bit of confetti, veteran players will not want to keep battling, as it’s not rewarding. This problem of identity is further highlighted by the combat system itself. Tanabe (the game’s director) refuses to use an experience system within the game. Yet he continues to maintain the battle system of constant encounters. Without a way to level up or improve one’s stats, why would anyone want to keep engaging in combat designed to entice participation by its rewards, which advance your character’s performance. If Paper Mario is for now on going to be what this game is and Color Splash was, then they need to abandon their combat system, as it’s current system ruins the whole experience. OK’s combat should’ve just been the slide puzzles, no combat at all. As a personal wish, but one that was not present in this review, I wish they’d just make a classic Paper Mario game and allow Mario in an RPG again. Expand

I’ve never played a paper Mario game before but I thought I’d try it out and it was very mediocre. Graphics are very nice and dialogue can be kinda funny sometimes but overall I was just bored while playing it. Gameplay is super easy and left me unsatisfied. I think if you have a kid they would probably enjoy it but I gotta give it a 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the game Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros and was really hoping for something similar. It's not. The story is weak (but who plays Mario game for the story anyway), the fighting system is really repetitive, and since it doesn't really reward you in any way you are just trying to avoid them (you get coins but they are everywhere and it's not like you can buy much). They are also extra hard if you are one of those who has a problem with a drifting joy-con. Most of the time you are collecting Toads, I do not really know why though. They give you sometimes a funny oneliner and they are off. What is great about the game is the graphic style and music. But the game is lacking something, it feels like it's not really done and it where rushed so Nintendo would have a game to release during the summer. Expand

I expected paper mario to be more like thousand year door, nintendo is too gimicky you dont need to make gickics in every game if its not broken dont try to fix it. No need to change the battle system and the rpg aspect.

Speaking of the combat, nintendo absolutely hit the nail on the head with it. The combat is unlike anything ive seen in an rpg and it is executed very well. Even though exp isnt gained from battles, I found myself willingly fighting the random enemies around the expansive open world just so i could learn all of the differnet ring combinations that the enemies could be arranged into. Also, the story in this game is by no means complex, but i think that is is sufficient for what the game wanted to achieve, and it does have its dark and heart touching moments. Overall, after the last 2 entries in the paper mario franchise, this feels like a much needed breath of fresh air, and makes me hopefully for the future of paper mario. Expand

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
