Better than expected! The game looks frankly gorgeous and moves at a pleasant pace. The bosses are engaging and creative! Its battle system risks getting tedious over time, due to its repetitive nature, but the world and environmental puzzles draw you back in when that fatigue hits. Great fun!

This graphics in 2020 are a shame for the games industry, the story is simple and pretty bad for a 2020 game, gameplay too repetitive with just a few bosses, I wish i bought ghost of tsushima instead and not this game i cannot refund it now :(

First don't listen to the negative reviews from the people who are just angry they didn't get the exact Paper Mario "remake" they wanted. I'm about 8 hours in and the gameplay and battle system are great. The story is very engaging and humorous. Even hunting the collectables is fun. As long as you don't expect this game to be a game it's not then you will love this game also.

Es un juego muy simpático, una historia carismática, el soundtrack no es su punto mas fuerte, pero es muy divertido. es una lastima por las restricciones de creatividad, pero los de inteliggent system lo han hecho bien con las cartas que tenían.

But first let us look at the positives.
Again Nintendo knows how the game should look and feel. Its pretty and I love what they've done.

BUT this game annoys me to its core. For some reason Nintendo thinks the players are brain dead and need hand holding for each and every step. Every new mechanic in this game apparently needs 3 5 times explaning how it works. Olivia is a great designed character, she delivers the "tutorial" aspect of the game and so, sadly all my anger gets directed at her direction because she repeats her self very over and over again on how something works.
This game is very: "Omg, just let me play please!"
Dialog is also not worth reading, since the story is very basic, dialogs are dad joke after dad joke and you have to read them because you can't skip the speach bubble like in other nintendo games.
The new battle system is quite alright idea, but also not worth getting excited for. Battles are quickly over and always the same pattern. Here are the enemies always in group of 4, please put them in a line or a square to jump on them or hit them with a hammer. Thats it. Always the same.
A boss battle breaks up the mondain mechanic und you need to solve how to get to the weak points. That is way more fun, since bosses change phase and you need to adapt. Nothing to difficult since you have the chance to get health by solving.
Haven't found a better weapon yet that doesn't break after use, which is alwas a great mechanic to put into games.
And not realy much to do in this game besides, going where olivia tells you to go, finding "collectibles" and finding toads. Which I kind of enjoy. It's funny how those little toads got folded up.

Origami King has almost to no RPG mechanic anymore, which is quite sad. So if you want to play an RPG Paper Mario like you know and love it, then you better stay away from it.

I heard from others if you like Sticker star you'll love this but if you like Thousand year door stay away from it. I wish I knew that sooner.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Origami King (TOK) is more of a spiritual successor of Sticker Star and Color Splash than the first 3 games of this series (Paper Mario, TTYD, and Super Paper Mario). TOK however, does a slightly better job creating a combat system that was initially interesting, utilizing puzzle combat that can be summed up as line the enemies in a row or a square and jump on them or hit them with a hammer, respectively.

However, I quickly noticed my enjoyment of the game increasing after the first 2 levels were over. This increase was because the game introduced a movement mechanic that allows you to completely skip the combat by simply running over the enemies, defeating them immediately.

Nintendo is attempting to create a balance between the old games, and the new direction it has been dragging the Paper Mario series for years. However if you're going to make an adventure game, make one. Don't make a half-hearted combat system that doesn't even truly reward you with in game progression, via experience points to level up your character for example.

I would also note that Paper Mario originally was an art style utilized to maximize the performance of the original games on hardware that wouldn't have been able to handle anything else. Intelligent Systems was able to maximize the amount of game they could create doing this. However now instead of being an art style, they have decided that "paper" itself is the driving theme of this series. Maybe its just me, but going through an old dungeon only to end up fighting a literal paper hole puncher is slightly immersion breaking and doesn't even make sense in the Mario universe. And the constant paper references grows old fairly quickly, with jokes flopping more times than hitting.

That's not to say there weren't redeeming parts of the game, but I felt only half the game was actually good given only half the game was spent living in the Mario universe and in the other half the big baddy was art supplies.

Regardless, this game will not fill the void Nintendo has created in not making a Mario RPG since TTYD. And given that the game contradicts itself in giving you ways to completely avoid parts of the game (including another way other than I mentioned), I cannot give this game a neutral/good score.

Bosses are sometimes tedious and having battle shortcuts just shows that even the devs acknowledge that they are not fun.
Graphics don't sell your game, This is the prettiest game on Switch and that's a shame since that's all this game has going for it.
Can the main partner have a mute button?
Pointing out pretty sights in your own game simply feels like the devs saying, "look at what we made! We sure did spend a lot of time making it!"
Based on how many 2D platformer references exist in this game I'm gonna assume literally nobody lives in this game world.
Having real life objects as bosses is not funny or clever, it's lazy.
Having a battle system that takes over a minute for a simple goomba fight is not fun or clever.
Forcing me into battles with this OK battle system does not make up for a lack of reward or reason for using said battle system.
Tutorials in Paper Mario TTYD were optional and didn't take long. Also they weren't the first 2-3 hours of the game.
There shouldn't be a tutorial on collectables.
There shouldn't be more than 1 tutorial on the basic battle system.
I need you to let go of my hand Nintendo.
I don't need you to tell me that that Toad is wearing a hat that is blue.
I don't need you to tell me I opened a doorway out I can see that for myself.

Mixing up the action adventure game with turn-based combat (which is pointless by the way and without any strategy or deeper logic, but also without any reward for participating in it simply unnecessary) was completely unsuccessful - I personally think that Color Splash had much better combat system.
It is a pity that the developers did not decide to either make a full action game or restore the combat system with TYD.

This game is probably a masterpiece. It's not an RPG, and was never meant to be one. Were other Paper Mario's actually RPG's? What role could you play other than Mario?

So Nintendo has come up with different incentive to fight enemies other than XP and leveling up (I won't spoil it), but it's basically XP in another form, which is actually impressively clever. The battle system is turn based, but not what the "we want an RPG" crowd wants. So they want turn based battles where you stand in a row and select actions. I mean, that's basically what this is, with the addition of a puzzle on top of the fighting. And it grows on you as it becomes more complex.

The game is a pleasure to play, and there's constant humor and surprises. The game actually oozes atmosphere, which I wasn't expecting at all. And it has brilliantly designed levels, and even more so the further you get in.

If you like high-quality first party Nintendo games, there's no reason you wouldn't like this. It's a great game to play after months of Animal Crossing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now I'm seeing a lot of 0's because it's not a traditional Paper Mario Game, but hear me out. It doesn't have to be. Now some may not like what I have to say, but I have to commend the devs for branching out and trying something new. Keep in mind that Breath of the Wild took away much of what made the franchise what it was but it still became a big hit, one of the best Zelda's of the franchise.

Paper Mario: The Origami King ticks a lot of check boxes for me. The first hour I played, I was a bit concerned, as it wasn't like the original series, but after getting a hold of the battle mechanic, it really isn't that bad. It might seem like a bad fighting mechanic but after getting used to it, I actually found myself going into battle a lot more often for extra coins, as well as familiarizing myself with it's mechanics. It's less than ideal, but I can see what they were trying to do. In Paper Mario, usually you have a 2D Plane in the middle of a fight, between just you and the enemy but in Origami King, they tried to expand that into a 3D Perspective and add a layer of depth and strategy into the game.

For the most part, I find myself enjoying the combat system. The world is vibrant and the art style they went with is spectacular, with story writing that just fits in with the Mario universe and the cheesy comments from Olivia just add to the charm that we've grown used to since the original game on the N64.

Bosses are a mixed bag. I have found that in the ones that I have fought so far, half of them have been incredibly inspired. Yes the coloring pencils is not exactly...creative...but it fits into the world of Paper Mario very well, but there are also the Volumental bosses which are much more creative in design and goes to show what the team was able to do with an Origami themed Paper Mario title

The game isn't perfect. It doesn't have traditional Paper Mario mechanics like it did in the first two titles, but I'm not going to stone the devs or Nintendo for wanting to try something new AND breathe new life into the series. It's a cut above some of the titles of the past. If I had to rank The Origami King with the titles already out...I'd say it's just below TTYD but it's definitely better than Super Paper Mario. Which again wasn't too bad of a game, I loved SPM, it was the last good Paper Mario that I found myself enjoying, and Origami King brings that love back to me with it's open world, vibrant art style and storytelling. Gameplay isn't bad, and it's above and beyond Sticker Star. It's not perfect, but it's very nearly there. So I give it an 8.

The game is charming, beautiful and fun, I really enjoyed it, but it's way too easy. They don't allow you to use your brain and solve some puzzles without getting any hint. Your little origami partner is giving hints all the time. So no challenge at all. Nintendo needs to realise that a part of their audience is maybe young but not dumb.

So in fact a good game, easy but good. If they follow that direction, then maybe we will get a great paper mario in the next decade.

It's Paper Mario, and while it has partners and light RPG elements, it is definitely not a spiritual successor to Paper Mario 64 or TTYD. But it's good. Nintendo has been taking Paper Mario away from its RPG roots in favor of an action adventure puzzle game, so know what you're getting into. This is basically a much better, very polished Color Splash.

People will feel mixed on the combat. Rather than resource management from Sticker Star or Color Splash, you attack by rearranging hordes of foes in a circle. You are always given enough spins and turns to perfectly clear regular enemies, and you get a damage boost from lining them up correctly. While this rewards players' puzzle-solving, it often times trivializes every battle in the game apart from boss battles, and many times I go through entire areas without ever seeing an enemy's attack animation. However, the bosses, while also puzzles, are well-crafted fights and definitely a highlight.

Story and humor is top notch as always. Instead of badges, you can equip accessories to boost abilities in and out of combat. You can buy and equip boots and hammers to choose from that act like stickers or cards from Sticker Star or Color Splash. They have durability, but are so sturdy and easy to obtain that you rarely need to think twice about using them if the situation calls for it. Partners sometimes attack in battle after Mario but aren't player-controlled, and oftentimes Mario will kill the enemy before they can even do anything.

As far as newer Paper Marios this one shines atop the rest and is legitimately a good puzzle game. It just might not be the Paper Mario fans have been clamoring for.

People are upset this isn't the thousand year door, and I wish it had exp, flower points and levels, but it doesn't, but despite not having those mechanics this is still a great game. Just because you want this to be another game doesn't mean it's bad. I recommend this as a long time paper Mario fan. (8/10 game at least, but I want to negate some of the unfair review bombing)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay, while unique and promising in concept, falls short when lining up enemies becomes super easy and it provides enough power to end fights almost instantly, and then just become a drag when you don't do it, and you instead win by simply exhausting your resources, which actually encourages you to avoid as many fights as possible since you get nothing out of fighting that you wouldn't find all over the place in the overworld, whether that be confetti or coins. It's probably been beaten to death, but the fact remains that an RPG without an experience system more often than not simply gives no reason to want to do tedious battles. The idea they likely had to circumvent this simply ended up being to have many unavoidable fights throughout the game, which sort of works I suppose, but the monotony is not broken just because instead of fighting some origami goombas because you should, now you're fighting them because the game doesn't give you a choice.

Lastly, when it comes to gameplay, the partners are pretty much useless and only occasionally do anything in battles (with some of them sitting out certain areas entirely)

The plot is mostly what Sticker Star and Color Splash were in the end, without any particularly special differences between them. The villain takes a macguffin related to whatever paper gimmick is present in one of those three games, and Mario must team up with another floating partner who doesn't do much to help you outside of explaining the games' gimmicks, tossing some witty dialogue, and sacrificing themselves at the very end of the story as yet another cheap attempt at emotional writing that just becomes stale when they've done it for the third time now. Actually, make that 4th, because Bobby also sacrifices himself in an incredibly forced attempt at a sad death, the second in the game alone. It's become a trope for every Paper Mario game now since Sticker Star and it's played itself out to the point where it feels more like a joke than the sad moment they're intending to portray. The dialogue throughout the game otherwise is very much so like Color Splash, in that it's mostly witty and attempting to be humorous at any point wherever possible, and sometimes it works and others it just doesn't. In general I feel like the past two Paper Mario games have had a terrible time writing a tone into their plot because it's never not intending to be mostly comedic until the few moments where it tries to get sad.

Lastly, the character design is better than the previous two installments in the series, but still fall short of what fans have mostly been asking for. What makes it worse is that its gotten to a point where the games are beginning to make jokes about how all of a certain race look the same, whether it be Toads or Bob-Ombs. Miyamoto and Tanabe seem to be insistent that creating unique designs for pre-existing characters or races is something they just don't want to do for some reason, which I find baffling.

Overall, all of this leads up to a question of, "Did you like Sticker Star and Color Splash?" Because if you did, then you'll love this game, as it's pretty much the exact same outside of the slightly inventive fighting mechanics. If you thought any of the previous two games were just OK or flawed then I can't possibly recommend spending 60 dollars for the same experience for the third time.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
