I bought a game to play, yet the game doesn't seem to want me to play it. Expand

Awesome art style but how can you mess up the gameplay? Keep it the same as Mario and Luigi titles. Why change the formula. How does Nintendo keep messing things up?

What the game did right is exactly what we expect of a AAA Mario game, bright colorful world, fun uplifting music, generic characters (recolored toads in silly hats), and loads of collectibles. But we really shouldn't be praising Nintendo for what they have been doing since the WII. Intelligent systems did make a change to the Paper Mario formula but unfortunately they spoiled it. But we really shouldn't be praising Nintendo for what they have been doing since the WII. Intelligent systems did make a change to the Paper Mario formula but unfortunately they spoiled it. They screwed up the combat system, like all the other negative reviews. They went with a weird ring puzzle design where you attempt to line up the enemies in rows and 2x2 squares. The ring is big with lots of open spaces but they limit the amount of moves you can make per-turn allowing you to only solve most puzzles one way (like a jig-saw puzzle). They added sub weapons that you can use like fire flowers and tanuki suit tail spin but they attack in the same formation as your jump or hammer making them not very useful items. Combat partners are a joke this time around being very useless almost laughable. And to top it all off you get nothing other than coins for the 2-5mins you could be spending every encounter, no exp to make you stronger, no unique items to grind for, just wasted time and more coins for your already overflowing coin pouch.
Overall this game is like a house with a nice façade but the inside is a mess.

The ring is fun and original for the first hour of gameplay, but once you get over the excitement that it is another Paper Mario game, the fun stops.

Normal battles will become chores, and to be honest, I stopped playing midway through world 5/6 because I just found the battles soooooooooo tedious.

Bosses where also rather disappointing. All of them other than a few mache bosses are things (scissors, tape, rubber band, etc.) which is dull in of itself, but then there is the fact that there isn't much strategy to them. You just run around the ring, and depending on the boss use different ways to get to the middle.

The mache battles are more interesting, fighting giant paper mache pokeys or bloopers, however these are rare occurrences...

Overall, if you really like puzzles, this might be for you, but if you are looking for the classic RPG that the first three Paper Marios are, this is definitely not the game for you..

Unfortunately for The Origami King, the risks fell flat (haha). Before we dive into what went wrong, let’s talk about the undeniable strengths of the game. The most obvious quality of The Origami King is the incredible visuals. At almost every scene, you can't help but pause and appreciate what you are seeing. There are points where Mario and his team rest on benches providing you a glimpse of the incredible artwork in the surrounding area. Nintendo could not have created a more interesting and satisfying world to explore for the Paper Mario franchise. The images included in this review are just a taste of what you'll get to see and if stunning and unique art styles are a priority to you, I think this game will exceed your expectations.

Another unexpected endowment of The Origami King is the story. Paper Mario has always been known for exploring characters from different backgrounds in the Mario Universe. It really is the only Nintendo series that gives you the perspectives of Goombas, Koopas, Bomb-ombs and a plethora of other Nintendo species. In this regard, The Origami King did not disappoint. The character development was strikingly deep and well thought out. Real sacrifices were made by each individual you befriend as they desperately try to help Mario save their world. There is even a super meta moment where the villain is forced to face his origin in a very interesting way. From my perspective, this is the furthest any Mario game has gone to give you a sense of dire need for a hero. It is not just a princess you are saving, but the entire Mario universe as we know it. Other aspects worth mentioning are a hilarious script and great diversity in challenges. There were lines in the game that made us laugh out loud and showed that it did not take itself too seriously.

With everything I have described so far you are probably wondering why I started this review the way I did. And that is exactly what you should be thinking. So much of this game was propelling this title towards legendary status that it should be clear how much friction the risks they took ultimately caused. A key feature in the Paper Mario franchise is the combat. Any fan of the series knows Nintendo is no stranger to completely changing how fights progress. But the leap they took in this game left many fans wondering, how did we get here? The mechanics employed by Nintendo are called "carousel combat". The model is comprised of puzzle-like challenges where Mario must expend most of his time and energy lining enemies up rather than strategizing with weapons and abilities. It is as dull as it sounds and after a few hours it became exhaustively boring. Not only are the combat mechanics horribly chore-like, but Nintendo decided that leveling up your abilities through experience was no longer worth it. It is almost as if Nintendo knew how bad of a decision carousel combat was. There was so much incentive to circumvent combat with enemies that I found myself sprinting and dodging entirely through the game to avoid any contact that was not absolutely necessary. I could touch on the boss battles, but they were more of the same, just with extra steps.

Another disappointment was the uselessness of your team. I fondly remember the older titles where each character that joined your squad brought unique and exciting combat features that created more depth to strategy. But the characters this time around stand awkwardly beside Mario while he pretends to be a kindergarten teacher and lines foes up single file. Even worse, they lazily perform moves that attack singular enemies for a fair amount of damage but without any thought given to their actions at all. You have no control over who they attack or what move they perform. This aspect was extremely disappointing to me and to my friends that I had encouraged to buy this game. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but that is only because we knew what Paper Mario: The Origami King could have been.

Combat has evolved in every Paper Mario title but this time around Nintendo has many fans wondering if the future of the series will continue along this puzzling path. With a heavy heart and a lot of confusion, we at BLG give Paper Mario: The Origami King a 6 out of 10. This game was enjoyable and we only recommend it if you genuinely love the franchise for more than the combat, or you actually somehow enjoy hours of making enemies stand at attention before you perform one of two moves on them. Nintendo has always been perfectly clear that they will prioritize reinventing game play with every title, so hopefully that means we will never see carousel combat again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario the Origami King is a solid adventure game. The world that is created here is incredibly unique and visually stunning, even if certain parts of it are comprised of the standard Mario fair. The Vellumentals and their temples give a sense of mystique and allure to the world that few Mario games can manage. The best part of this game without a doubt is the writing and characters. Olivia is one of the best partner characters Nintendo has ever made. She is cheerful, bubbly, easily frightened, and extremely enthusiastic about seeing new things and going to new places. She contrasts perfectly with her brother, King Olly, who feels nothing but contempt for the world and his creators. It creates a very strong emotional throughline for the main journey. And beyond that, the game is really funny. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times throughout the adventure. Just about every NPC says something witty regarding their circumstances, one of them even parodying the Eric Andre show, which nobody under the age of 15 will probably get.

The battle system is sort of give and take. Conceptually, it allows for satisfying puzzle solving that can make you feel like you're legitimately smart and can think outside the box. And many times, it does just that. Quite a few battles in the late game can be head scratchers, and took me a long time to figure out. However, just as many puzzles are pretty mindless and can be solved rather easily. And if you really feel like making the entire game this easy, the game gives you options to solve part of the puzzle for you. This is where coins come in. Unlike other Paper Mario games, battles don't give experience. Instead, you earn coins which can be used for buying time to solve puzzles, which is what I used them for most frequently, or you can use them to buy stronger items from shops. This makes the lack of experience pretty negligible, since you also don't earn more HP in the traditional sense. You earn more HP by exploring the world and finding Max increases at certain locations, and this also improves your other stats. The rest of the game is built around coins. But the downside to this, or possibly an upside depending on your perspective, is you can use coins to partially solve every battle puzzle automatically. On the one hand, it's nice to give people a little help when they can't figure it out themselves. On the other, solving the puzzles is never required just to finish the battles, it just gives you an attack multiplier to beat them faster. While I can see them attempting to appeal to that old-school arcade game mindset of "the better you are, the faster you can beat the game," it falls short here because the coins are so numerous that there's basically no punishment for letting the game solve the puzzle for you, so you can easily fall into a pattern of doing that for every fight and eliminating pretty much all of the game's challenge. I actively tried to avoid doing this, and I think it improved the experience for me. But I can fully understand why it would be a turn off for others.

This is why I started by saying this is a good adventure game, because the best parts of the game revolve around the beautiful vistas, the fascinating locations, the sense of discovery and world-building. All of that is stellar. If you're looking for a solid adventure with funny dialogue, charming characters, and gorgeous scenery, you need to get this game. If you're looking for a challenging or otherwise thoughtful RPG, you're better off with the older Paper Mario games, but I still recommend this as long as you leep expectations in check.

For example, the battle system. At first I was interested because it was different from your standard Turn-based combat because of the the tile switching and stuff. And it is! It’s a pretty good battle system. However, the attacking itself is a bit... weird. A perfect attack and a weak attack have almost no difference in damage. And there are items, but there’s no reason to use them since they do less damage than normal weapons and are really just no different. You can also defend, but that’s only useful during bossfights really. There’s also toad town wich you can go to to buy weapons and items, but you always have a huge supply of them, so there’s really no reason to. The system is a lot better during bossfights, as there’s a lot more different combinations you can make and different things you can do. Talking about bossfights, using regular everyday objects such as scissors, tape, or rubber bands. The bossfights are a lot of fun. So, the battle system is pretty good, but has a big flaw.

The story is phenomenal. There’s just so much charm in it. That definitely gets a 10/10 from me, no questions asked.

The graphics are pretty good. I mean, you can’t really make a game about paper look more realistic, and some of the ending cutscenes look like they came straight out of a movie, so yeah.

And this game is no short game either: I played for a few hours almost every day and it took me 4 weeks to complete. So definitly buy this if you want something that you want to enjoy for a long time.

The music is great and very rememberable. There definitely has been some thought put into that. The bossfights all have unique music (except for the vellumentals). However, I think the final boss music should’ve been a bit more unique, as it sounded very generic.

In conclusion: definitly give this game a try. You won’t regret it. I would give it a 9,5, but there is sometimes lack of detail and unpolished game aspects, so it gets a 8.8 out of me.

My only gripes with this game is that although I love the characters, there aren't very many original ones. The enemy battles can also get pretty repetitive. One of the highlights of this game is the story. I will talk a bit about it here so if that worries you skip anything in (). (SPOILERS!——
Each and every character in Origami King is filled with life, identity and humor. The game strikes an incredible balance between humor, netrual, and serious. This is a modern big N game so don’t expect the next Majora’s Mask or Partners in Time but it knows when to be serious when to be neither and when to be funny. However, Due to Nintendo being safe the team was not able to make unique characters. But they still tried anyways. 8/10 story.)

    -Gameplay-
    —Overworld—
Mario does not control super well in the overworld. I will admit I played a lot more Mario and Luigi than Paper Mario but it just felt, off. Mario only can really jump and hammer and it’s weird for a Mario game even a Mario RPG to have this horrible small jump. It just doesn’t work right. Overworld battles are ehh... I know a lot of people like them but to me they were alright. Not bad but I think they did a good job by putting just enough in for it not to get old but it doesn’t whear on you. The puzzle elements of the overworld are very very good however. And I think puzzles are a great fit for the series. Same with all the collectibles which are ironically Toads but it is a great deal of fun finding them all. 7/10 Overworld
    —Battles—
Battles are great as well, It uses a unique battle system that is made very well. It uses this game’s greatest strength by making them like a puzzle to solve. You can use coins to buy extra time to solve the puzzles and pay the toads to help you. If you correctly solve it you get a nice attack bonus and that satisfying ah-ha! moment. It takes out EXP/Star Points/Love/Whatever and has coins. I love this coin system. It is so much more elegant. It takes grinding out completely. And makes it so that it’s more up to skill if you win or not. You get upgraded via coins by going to the mostly balanced shops and getting temporary upgrades. Which work like BOTW except you have a permanent hammer and jump. And get health by finding toads. (Except once which annoys me but I digress) Which allows you to still do hard playthroughs just like the old games by avoiding badges, health, and shops. You can also use items and the combat really didn’t get old till the very end but they were able to make less encounters happen when it got old. 10/10 Combat. Perfect.
    -Music-
Origami King has one of the hands-down best soundtracks in a video game period. It’s kinda hard to describe it but so much effort was put into the smallest details. 10/10 Sound design.
    -Art-
Finally, the art. Along with the other things this game’s art is excellent. It takes the design of Paper Mario and perfects it. The game is gorgeous and it is impressive because they would have had to painstakingly fold every price of origami in real life and get it right. It is breath taking. And it is flowing with originality as well. 10/10 Here as well.
    -Finish-
Origami King is my pick for game of the year 2020 and it really deserves more attention. Please play it.

Exploring the world is very fun and the script is funny. Nintendo proves time and time again that you don't need amazing hardware to make a beautiful game. They were on the cusp of making a great game here, but the slide puzzle system just doesn't cut it for a game of this length. Even a no-frills turn based combat system would have been better, but for some reason Nintendo doesn't want to make Paper Mario an RPG again. It's fine if they don't want to make another RPG, but the day-to-day boss fights need to be interesting.

The most underrated game of 2020, the visuals, story, characters, boss battles and graphics are all perfect.

Just because the regular battles might get a bit boring over time did not take away from the game bring fantastic and my 2nd favorite Paper Mario game.

Fantastic looking game. Quite fun and a ton of fun characters are on your path.

Unfortunately the battle system is frustrating and very repetitive. It's based on a single type of puzzle. If you can't solve it within the time limit there is a penalty on your attacks and you are guaranteed to take a hit. It made me feel pretty stupid because in some cases I just don't see the solution,

It made me feel pretty stupid because in some cases I just don't see the solution, which is frustrating. Enemies return after you've left a part of the story and you'll be avoiding them just to prevent having to do another battle. Weapons break really fast and finding toads everywhere gets boring eventually.

The combat is so boring, repetitive and unrewarding to the point you'll actively avoid "encounters" if you want to call them that, the boss battles are unnecessarily complex and make a stupid battle system even more dreadful than its random "encounters". Although I could eventually solve them myself, I had to help numerous people in my household who couldn't despite the game being aimed at said kids and it only shows Nintendo's core audience can't even solve them. The stories for the recent entries come across as being basic since Miyamoto's stance that the Paper Mario franchise doesn't need a story and is nothing more than a forgetful adventure fueled with jokes you're not going to remember. You're progressing through an empty world for literally no reason and they're only adding a story wherever it's necessary, though a lack of one actively leaves you not only wanting more - but feeling a desire to replay older Paper Mario titles if you've had the joy of doing so.

I also dislike the characters, especially Olivia who is annoying, comes off as empty headed and unfunny to the point where you just want her to shut up and quit pointing out the obvious, which you can tell is to give Nintendo's child audience a sense of direction since this games so bad at explaining how to get from point A to B. For an origami character, she's rather flat when it comes to writing. None of the other characters stand out to me either, they're as bland as their designs. The only good thing about this is the music and the stage design (albeit each world being small and lacking exploration), however that's not enough to keep me going through a mundane game

This only made me appreciate Super Paper Mario's combat and I had issues with that. I really dislike this game and the recent direction of Paper Mario. Mario & Luigi shouldn't have died for this

They kKIMD OF brougjt back partners but they only follow you for a limited time and have generic names such as Bob-Omb (RIP Bombette and Admiral Bobbery). You cannot control tjem in battle either. They attack but often fail without any player input. Ok so the writing's good but what about the gameplau? Battles are unnecessary. They are gimicky beyond belief. You have to line up enemies in a row before attacking. It goes front brain damaged stupid easy to nearly impossoble to figure out on a timer before you know it. Most people I know, myself included, just skip as many of them as possible. You don't get any EXP from defeating enemies so there's really no point to bother. Like you partners, every NPC is generic. Most of them are Toads and Shy Guys with some other of Bowser's minions thrown into the mix. There is absolutely no originality whatsoever like Paper Mario, The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario had in their character design. The only original characters are Olly (the main villain, at least it's not Bowser this time) and his sister and Mario's partner, Olivia. Olivia is by far the best part of the game. She herself has more charm than the rest of the "Sticker Star" trilogy combined. All in all, the game is a treat for the eyes and a good read (yeah, no voice acting, like we're still in 1999) but certainly not a fun game to play. I highly recommend wathing a let's play on YouTube rather than playing it. Unlike the 1st 3 games in the series, nothing compels me to try to complete the game as much as possible or even replay it. The battle system is enjoyable, however no, you don't earn EXP, don't use badges etc, but it IS innovative and enticing once you get the hang of it. Regular battles I found fun, but because you only get coins, to but weapons, it's and endless loop only if you care to buy weapons. You can genuinely just go through the whole game fighting no regular enemies and just find hearts to make you stronger. However, because I enjoyed the battles, this wasn't a negative for me. Boss battle offer a real challenge at times, and I did have troubles certain moments where it got a little frustrating

Characters are charming, especially Olivia and there are some genuine, touching moments here that I wasn't expecting. No, you don't have partners, but I don't find the game suffers by lacking it, as the script is actually funny with a lot of heart. I enjoyed reading dialogue from Toads to all other NPC's. I was caught off guard a few times by how much I laughed out loud, or felt very strongly for Olivia or even the Bomb Om.

Music is fantastic and at times surprising that it's in a Paper Mario game. Each song fits the mood and scenery perfectly

All in all, give it a shot if you can, if it's not your taste I can definitely see why; it doesn't fit the traditional mold of most RPG'S, which is a huge ask, but if you're willing to play outside your comfort zone, you won't be disappointed!

Puzzle solving, exploration, art style, story, and even the combat, make this game what it is. There is no experience system, however, you can collect coins from combat, and from finding nook's and cranny s throughout the world to buy weapons and items. Unfortunately, fighting random enemies in the over-world is the most inefficient way to collect coins. Speaking of fighting, the combat can be a mixed bag. On the one hand, random enemy encounters can be frustrating. However, boss fights are exciting and diverse in game-play. The aspect that really sells this game is the story, and the charm in general. You will find yourself falling in love with the characters of this game, such as Olivia and Bob-omb. Puzzle solving, while annoying at times, is usually pretty fantastically integrated in an appropriate context that doesn’t halt the pacing. The world design, for the most part, is diverse. The music is exciting. The art style is gorgeous. The writing is some of Nintendo's best, both story-wise and characters. The humor had me laughing and engaged every step of the way. There are some extremely memorable characters here (looking at you Bobby and Olivia). The puzzles are engaging and you feel a strong sense of progression as you make your way through the adventure.

The amount of content you get in the game is huge. So many areas to explore, so many different collectables.

Now for the bad: The combat. The combat itself is not bad, but it is for sure the weakest part of the game. If they allowed you to control your alley and pick your ally's action I think it would have really beefed it up.

I very much liked the boss battles. Especially the bosses which did not require the ring style combat.

The first and most obvious issue with this game is the combat. This game features a rotating ring puzzle system that allows the player to move enemies into groups before attacking. This game features a rotating ring puzzle system that allows the player to move enemies into groups before attacking. These ring puzzles seem interesting at first, but they lose their charm halfway through the game. Generally, it came down to solving the puzzle in two seconds or just spending 500 coins to automatically solve the puzzle. I don't mind having a puzzle element in battles but in most fights the puzzle WAS the battle. If you properly solve the puzzle enemies will generally go down with a single jump or hammer. Sometimes you need to select the iron boots for spiked enemies, but that's about as deep as it gets. Additionally, there are only two or three action commands in this game. Compared to previous entries this is extremely small and it adds to the feeling of repetition that comes with battles. Finally, there is the issue of incentive. Battles earn you coins which can be spent on collectibles, items, and puzzle hints. Coins are valuable enough that battles aren't completely worthless, but I often found that the only times I willingly engaged in battle was when I needed to grind coins for a ridiculously expensive trophy. For reasons mentioned previously, the battle system is shallow and repetitive. I never battled for the sake of battling. Though it wouldn't fix the core combat I think some sort of EXP system would've made battles feel more meaningful. Building up Mario and having him learn new abilities or something would make battling at least a bit more engaging. As it is, battling is one step above worthless and doesn't have the fun factor to keep it afloat. The only exception to this is the boss fights, which shake things up enough to be engaging and fun.

My second issue is with the "Paper" theme. I believe the developers have taken this a bit too far. This may sound like a "purist" position, but I believe the paper should not be at the forefront of gameplay, dialogue, and world building. I think Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door handled the "Paper" aspect of Paper Mario the best. The different fold curses were cute acknowledgments of the flat character designs that didn't overstay their welcome. However, since Sticker Star, the entire world has been made from craft supplies and there is a lot of dialogue acknowledging that the characters and world are arts and crafts. It's difficult to explain why this bothers me but it just all feels so "fake." Now the first three Paper Mario games were presented in a storybook format, but the world and its characters always felt "real" enough that it was never distracting. This feeling of disconnect from the world is at its greatest when the Legion of Stationary is on screen. The members of the Legion of Stationary are all real-world objects such as scissors and colored pencils. These "characters" feel incredibly out of place and further my emotional disconnect with the world and its characters. Who are they? Where did they come from? I'm not sure, but I really wish they were replaced with someone or something that came from within the Paper Mario world rather than the real world. The first three Paper Mario games had their own original art direction that made the world feel like a place that stands on its own. Now the Paper Mario universe is loosely and needlessly tied to the real world and I have no idea why. No children are going to be drawn in by the arts and crafts aesthetic, they don't care. All this has done is make the whole Paper Mario world feel fake. As I previously stated the game is beautiful, but the paper theming seriously hampers any sort of stakes in the story and my general investment in the game.

My final issue is the creative limitations that have been placed on this series. I'm sure someone can explain why using countless identical Toads and Bowser baddies is actually a genius business move, but I really don't care. The citizens of this world are, for the most part, nameless background characters who can be mistaken for one another. When the majority of the inhabitants of the world are cut from the same mold with little to no distinctive features it's difficult to care about any of them. I still remember side characters such as Koopa Koot from the original Paper Mario because he has a distinct look, personality, and name. Is anyone going to remember the rich Toad who lives in Toad Town in a year from now? I personally doubt it. "Rich Toad" is a stock Yellow Toad with no given name or especially memorable function. Characters like Bobby, whose name is actually Bob-omb, and Professor Toad come close to matching the quality of the older games' characters, but they all fail to meet the standards set by a side character in one way or another. Giving a few NPCs interesting outfits or different body proportions goes a long way in visual diversity.

Okay game, but the flaws are deep. My younger brother got bored and stopped playing before the second boss.

Review of this game is so sad. This would easily be a 9/10 or 10/10. The world is beautiful, characters are lively and entertaining. Levels are great and jokes in between funny. The length of the game is also very good, 5x call of duty campaign. However there are two things that are wrong with this game:
    - lack of character level up (gaining experience). There are only like 4 types of the same weapons (weak, normal, strong, the best), and thats basically it. No character development at all apart from equipping weapon and accessories (with a few better versions available)
    - the battle system. Using the rings is fine for 20 minutes, but afterwards gets repetitive and boooooring. Align the characters in a straight line for the jump attack or in a 2x2 group for the hammer attack. And that is it. Repeat this in every battler (ok, apart from boss battle). This is so boring and frustrating. Does not matter if this is a combat in your 1st playtime hour or 25th, the battle will look the same. Extremely boring.

That is very sad, as the battle system is very important in this game. As mentioned all the other parts are great. The world looks great, levels are well designed and characters funny. However, the repetitive and shallow combat ruins the game experience, as the combat is with us from the beginning till the end of this title.

However, players can ignore the puzzles and just use the turn based attacks. It will just take longer.

I personally like puzzles, so I enjoy the system. The puzzles don't require the highest iq, so many can be solved pretty quickly. For the most skilled puzzlers, it will be tedious, but it's a small part of the game. I spend most of the time exploring, finding toads and hidden blocks, and advancing the main story.

Any Nintendo fan needs to play this game on its own merit. Don't think of it like an installment in a series. As a standalone experience, there is a lot to appreciate. I've paused and taken screenshots of amusing dialog and cute photos throughout the game. Those that don't like it I fear have not truly given it a chance, and perhaps judging it against what they want the game to be instead of appreciating the developer's intentions.

The funny and childlike presentation cannot hide the fact that this is a game for juveniles and adults. It's relatively complicated to play and without any reference to children's imaginations. It's actually another mediocre RPG that the world does not need. It's strange why Nintendo, of all companies, comes up with such ideas.

Boss battles are varied and fun. Battles can be mixed with some being rpg like and others being more free or adventure based.

Story? It's okay. Not amazing but it's okay. What they did well though was give us characters throughout that mean something to us and have consequences for each action.

    Nice enough satisfying ending.

Reading other reviews. People say you get too many coins. That's true at the start of the game. Until you start hitting item after item that costs a fortune. Though mushrooms and so on stay cheap.

A few fun moments throughout in the story I'd say too, daftness, sillyness. It's nice.

Though.... There are too many toads at times, haha.

I honestly find the user rating at the time of writing this to be quite harsh. I recommend this game.

To me, the biggest strength Origami King has is that it actually TRIES to tell a story in the same vain as TTYD and SPM. It isn’t just a generic “Bowser kidnaps Peach” story like Sticker Star and Color Splash.

The biggest issue is unlike TTYD and SPM, it doesn’t make enough of an effort to dive beneath deeper waters. Compared to TTYD and SPM, there isn’t really much to decipher in terms of lore. I feel like they could of taken an opportunity to expand upon the Vellumentals and the Bibilofolds instead of just making them bosses you have to fight and plot devices you need to pick up. OK doesn’t have its own version of Grifty who explains the lore behind the game like TTYD and SPM do.

Like, Olly’s motivations were because of a Toad scribbling on him? That’s...kind of lame. Even if the game DOES seem fine with making fun of the “deep” aspect of PM, there should of at least been more of an effort to flesh out Olly’s character like Count Bleck and make him someone we can sympathize with.

In terms of story it’s definitely a step in the right direction, but they could do SO MUCH more with it. I was happy that they gave us some insight into Bobby as a character, and if they take the extra step to build a more immersive environment then Origami King would of been PERFECT.

As for the combat, the ring-based system is DEFINITELY a massive improvement over SS and CS’s battle system, in that it actually puts more emphasis on strategy. There were moments where I was genuinely scratching my head and wasting coins on extra time. The biggest gripe I have is that it's incredibly unrewarding at times...if you aren't able to solve the puzzles fast enough you only get maybe 100-150 coins for clearing the battle. Not to mention the over world also kind of throws coins at you, even if it's not much. I feel like the ring-based system could work more IF they flesh it out a bit more.
Overall, I give Origami King an 8/10. It's a fun little adventure that makes a half-step towards a return to form, but it could be SO MUCH better if they'd fleshed out the story a bit more and made the combat more rewarding.

At this point, the future of Paper Mario is up in the air. There’s no sure way to tell whether or not the series will continue to abandon its RPG roots or even opt to remaster the older games. All we can do is hope for the best and that Nintendo makes decisions that will please everybody.

After releasing a series of sub-par games in the series, Intelligent Systems decided to start fresh with "Paper Mario", and it paid off well! This game is an absolute joy to play from it's graphics to it's music and it's witty dialogue. The levels are huge and impressive and the puzzles are a brain teaser. But unfortunately, this game falls flat on it's battle system as most would tell you...

The story starts off with Mario and Luigi discovering a new villain by the name of King Olly, who plans on folding up the entire paper world into origami. King Olly has already folded up most of Bowser's Minions and even Princess Peach. Determined to foil his plans, Mario teams up with his new friend Olivia to stop King Olly and his evil plans. To do this, the pair must travel to the farthest reaches of the Earth to find 5 colored streamers that are holding Princess Peach's Castle captive. And so their journey begins!

Exploring the gigantic worlds the game has to offer is a joyride you could do over and over again! The levels are beautiful to look at and the music in the background fits the aesthetic perfectly! This game is also a completionist's dream-come-true, as their are lots of Toads to save and treasures to collect.

The game is also very charming with it's characters and what they have to say. Your primary partner, Olivia, is not a nagging hassle like Kersti was in "Paper Mario: Sticker Star". There are also many other characters you'll meet, like Bobby and Professor Toad who prove to be very helpful on your quest.

As mentioned before (and probably every review here will tell you), the battle system just isn't as fun (nor effective) as the developers like to think. The game features a 360-degree battle system in which you are tasked with moving the enemies around a turntable to line them up just right to your strategic advantage before attacking them. The battle system's concept in very unique, but it can sometimes be a little unfair. For every battle, you are only given a set amount of time and moves to place the enemies where you want them. This can lead to frustrating moments (like what I went through) if one does not get good at this new system. Boss Battles also work in a similar fashion, but instead of lining up the enemies, you're tasked with building a path for Mario to take to collect power-ups, avoid traps and defeat the boss. I found boss battles to be much more fun than regular battles, but unfortunately, both battle systems are very unrewarding, as their is no Experience Points to be gained from fighting, despite the game having RPG roots.

"Paper Mario: The Origami King" will surprise players who aren't expecting much from a newer entry to the series, and will be delighted to see elements like Partners, Badges and Audiences implemented from the first 3 "Paper Mario" games. At the same time, for those who enjoy some of the more modern entries in the series, weapons from "Paper Mario: Sticker Star" and several jokes and Easter Eggs from "Paper Mario: Color Splash" make return here as well. The latest game in the series yet has the upsides of having a unique story, gorgeous graphics, catchy music, lovable characters, giant worlds, and lots of collectibles. The game's only true flaw is it's battle system, (which in my opinion is still better than "Sticker Star" and "Color Splash"'s battle systems). If you have any doubt in this game, don't! Because "Paper Mario: The Origami King" is an adventure like no other!

Expand

Edit: Unfortunately, after spending a lot more time with this game, I have to admit it was a total waste of time. As a result, I have to lower my score from the initial 4/10 to 2/10. The more you progress, the worse, and the only thing that keeps repeating in your head is the thought "this game was written and designed by idiots!" In terms of narrative, the game tries to be initially fun, but ends up being pathetic. OK, I know - it's all forgivable. You say that many stupid decisions were made in this game (not even counting the combat system), but still the game is overall OK. Below overage, but not a total disaster. I could agree for the most time. However, what happens at the end of the game is just overkill. Somewhere later in the story, you have a mandatory "mini-game" (yes, that Shy-guy show), in which after scoring 100 points in fairly easy but wrongly designed challenges (you always know the right answer but rarely have enough time to align the wheels... ), as "the icing on your frustration cake" you have to answer what is the correct word used in the first song in the game (this silly one with dancing trees). A song, that you obviously cannot remember because it passed so much time. And you think, "so what?" - there surelly cannot be any consequences for that. Oh boy, how wrong you are! The thing is, that it's just "game over" if you can't answer correctly. All of sudden - after collecting all toads, all hidden blocks to this point you're rewarded with game over. Just because you don't remember silly song from the beginning. And nobody ever told you to memorize it! Is this the most important aspect of Origami King? Thats what it's all about - silly game about dancing trees! Didn't know that? What a **** At the beginning I thought that maybe it was just random bad decision in this particular moment of this game, or maybe they again wanted to be "that funny". But then I recalled many situations like that in this game.. Nope. This was made all on purpose. You know why? Because apparently they hired bunch of monkeys who had smoked weed while designing this game. And you paid them your hard earned money for that. Don't get me wrong. Game execution is OK - the engineers did good job. It's writers & designers who should be fired here.
Don't be stupid like me - do not buy this game. It's neither for children nor for parents. It has no purpose and playing this gives you nothing. It's like B-class movie which was supposed to be and advertiesed as B-class pastishe, but fells flat and ends up with cringe.

The plot is pretty paper thin (no pun intended), and even though the ending is touching, it can’t make up for a story that sadly is inferior to the traditional “bowser kidnaps peach” storyline.

Badge and gear variety is lacking and completely erases strategy from the game. Rather, victory is tied to puzzle solving, which if done successfully, allows you to finish every fight in one turn before the enemy even has a chance to take a shot at you.

On the positive side, the art style and open world blend wonderfully and make it a joy to explore.

Overall, it’s a great looking and sounding game, but I always found myself hesitant to boot it up and finish it because the battle system—the meat and potatoes of the game—feel like an empty halfhearted effort at a new design that falls flat and has me begging for a true return to the classic Paper Mario battle system that made the franchise so enjoyable.

I absolutely hate… literally the worst combat system ive ever experienced in a game period, let alone and rpg, here your goal is to slide and turn enemies, line them up and then jump on them or hit them with your hammer, and take turns until you defeat them, these battles are so easy, and such a slog to get through that they really have no business being here and existing… I do sortve like this system for this games boss battles, that by the way the game is full of… but I just really cant stand them and theyre ultimately what made me walk way after playing for a little over 20 hours, which is about the second to last boss battle.. I just couldn’t take the monotony anymore… these battles literally ruined the game from me…
I maybe could’ve withstood if he origami king wasn’t such a long game.. it just never wants to end with constant convoluted area after convoluted area, running around different sections of the map, collecting items to get to the main bos battle, which is fine, but for that to be the formula for literally every ribbon, it gets exhausting…
While paper Mario the origami king drastically suffers from pacing issues, as it never gives you a break with jus an occasional straight forward ribbon, the charm and the world will have you hooked and lost in this world, wanting to uncover all it has to hide.. that is again until you physically cant take it anymore…
id love to see the completion stats of this game.. because I absolutely loved this game for the majority of my time with it, and even I couldn’t muster up the strength to finish
I give Paper Mario: The Origami King
    a 7.5/10

first of all, let me get something straight, I am not trying de-review bomb the ratings and that all this is my personal opinion of the game. so now, I will start. This review will be split to four things, overworld, battle system, enemy design ( I choose enemy because as far as I know, nobody talked about it), and completionist view, so lets start with the overworld, the overworld isfirst of all, let me get something straight, I am not trying de-review bomb the ratings and that all this is my personal opinion of the game. so now, I will start. This review will be split to four things, overworld, battle system, enemy design ( I choose enemy because as far as I know, nobody talked about it), and completionist view, so lets start with the overworld, the overworld is filled with many things like really pretty graphics, other people might not like the 100% paper themed world, I really enjoyed it, especially because most games I played had different styles, but somehow felt he same so the paper theme was a nice change of pace. the overworld is also filled with collectibles like toads that have sometimes have pretty funny things to say when you save them and tons of what is basically cool looking action figures that look that that also describe whatever the figure is, there are also not-bottomless holes that you can fill with confetti that you can get from almost everything (because everything is confetti), the last thing I will talk about is the worlds, there are 6 different areas in-game that I won't describe because this is a spoiler free review but all I will say that each world has it's own theme that it's mission revolves around which is normal for a game but the themes are still pretty cool. Now I will talk about the oh-so controversial battle system. The battle system is a literal turn based battle system because you turn rings to arrange enemies to get them all in a single turn, and while other people might absolutely despise the battle system, I find it very fun and refreshing, and yes I did avoid most battles, but I do that in every single RPG I play and never because the battle system is boring and that not having EXP is also pretty nice because I don't like to grind for a boss just to get destroyed by the next one (AKA every single hard mode RPG I played) so not having EXP is pretty nice there are also boss battles that instead of arranging the enemies,
you arrange a path to hit the boss's weakpoint. the battle system is also supported with the gear system, the gear system is just equipment that you buy with coins that you get from battles and overworld stuff like not-bottomless holes and ? mark blocks and to counter a point I see a lot in this game's reviews, items get pretty expensive later on, and weapons breaking helps with losing money. Remember toads, well they can help in battles by solving some of the puzzles, healing you, and damaging enemies which reduces their annoyance factor. Next is enemies design. Since the game is themed around origami, most enemies are are origami and are all possible to make in real life (neat), most of them look like kinda creepy and unsettling which is probably how they are supposed to look like, there are also paper macha enemies that eat the world and create non bottomless holes and instead of using the normal battle system, you need to beat them in the overworld by hitting a sticker on them with the hammer so they aren't invulnerable to hammer hits from every other side. the bosses have my favorite designs even though some people might say they are lazy because they are literally just stationary work materials, and I LOVE that, each boss had attacks depending on what they are. My favorite was the ninth boss that always uses an attack that can 1-hit kill you (you could probably guess what it is). Now to the final category, the completionist view. In this category, I will talk about how completing the game 100% is, and was hard but fun. most stuff like saving toads dosen't take long but can sometimes be just a little bit frustrating, but not too much. Collecting the figures is the same as the toads, but the real challenge is the trophies. The trophies can range from hitting all ? mark blocks, to playing all games in a game show without failing any one (that was a nightmare) but they aren't almost impossible to get. Sadly, there aren't any special thing that you get exept an extra cutscene after the credits, but the journey more then enough for me. Overall, paper mario the origami king is a great game, but if you think about buying it, you should watch some gameplay for it until you decide to buy it or not.

    And now, goodbye

I understand that this is a very controversial game, and can kind of understand why, but I actually like the gameplay so far, and the improved battle system. Good plot(s) too.

Maybe it’s not perfect, but this is the PAPER MARIO I hope to see a few years ago,not Color Splash and Sticker Star.

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
