I enjoyed this game . the combat system does need work i.m.o it gets stale, and i noticed myself trying to avoid combat quite a few times because it feels a bit pointless without a xp system even though you do get coins/confetti. Let’s not beat around the bush here, The Origami King is not an RPG. If you grew up in the days of The Thousand Year Door, you’re most likely going to be disappointed with the outcome. Gone are the days of taking turns and planning your attacks, Instead, you operate a ring-based arena, trying to line up the enemies in either a straight line or a square of four. It takes a while to get used to. In fact, some areas are littered with these ring-based battles it gets overwhelming and repetitive. But I think the end, the battle system is a nice puzzle, and a delightful break from the main game. Speaking of the main game, it doesn’t follow our favorite plumber Mario through the same “damsel-in-distress story. Instead, he finds Princess Peach has been completely turned into Origami by King Olly, the game’s biggest rival. The character itself doesn’t have any notable personality, besides his fierce desire to turn every piece of paper into Origami. That same storyline follows throughout the entire game, and is implemented very well. The beginning stages are very linear. And hearing Olivia, Mario’s over-zealous but sweet partner constantly hold your hand gives very little chance of being able to work things out on your own. And leaving out the very rare cases, it’s like this the whole game. Along with this idea, Mario can ask Olivia for hints anytime he likes, and usually those hints give away the answer completely. However, the stages and areas get much more appealing and larger the further you progress. With collectibles to find constantly, it barely feels like a constraint. But, aside from the mountainous treasures you find along the way, one bad habit sticks throughout the game- the hidden toads. These toads are everywhere. From a leaf on a tree, to a swan in a pool, to a flower hidden away in the dirt, it makes it almost impossible to find them all without any help, especially with how big the areas get the further you progress. And 100% an area is usually limited for this reason alone. It is definitely the games biggest restraint, and leaves much room to be desired in terms of completing the game fully. So, for all those reasons alone, I feel Paper Mario: The Origami King deserves a six. It was a fun adventure, and kept me occupied throughout the vast and expansive areas to explore, but in terms of collecting it really doesn’t hold up well. So, if you’re hungering for an original RPG, you should definitely pass and just play The Thousand Year Door for the Ump-Teenth time. If however you just want a fun little puzzler with lots of beautiful lands to explore, I highly suggest it. Happy Gaming, Fellow Gamers -Apportal Expand

Now the combat system is pretty unique, it’s laid out like a puzzle and when you do it right you get your attacks powered up, the bosses in the other hand are completely different and unique they always add something new to the bosses each one feels unique in they’re own way which is awesome. The soundtrack is absolute perfection, every tune is a jam. There is one minor issue with the game though, at the start you might have issues getting the hang of the combat system and the boss fights but when you master them no harm will be on your way. Paper Mario The Origami King is a thriller, it’s fun in every way from the combat and bosses to the worlds to even the soundtrack it’s all there in this complete package, don’t let the minor issue get to you the game is absolutely worth it especially for the humor. I am a huge fan of Paper Mario 64 and PM: TTYD, they are in my top 5 favorite games. I was so excited when this game came out because I was hoping that it would be a return to form! As we all know that didn't happen and from what I heard about the game I was so sad/mad that they didn't want to recreate those amazing experiences and it seemed like they were doing all the wrong things (keeping a weird battle system, no real partners, no star points or RPG element, no badges, no unique characters just toads galore) and I decided I'd skip the game as a boycott. I ended up getting a copy as a gift from a good friend who knows I love Paper Mario and didn't have a choice keeping it, felt bad telling them i wanted to skip it and....

I, LOVE, THIS, GAME. Sure it IS NOT a return to form in anyway, but it's still a fantastic game full of wonderful surprises. The world is SO picturesque, probably one of the most beautiful Mario worlds EVER created, I have to say whoever was part of developing the art for this game NEEDS a raise. The music is beautiful and makes the world come to life. The dialogue is SO SO SMART and funny. I am having such a good time playing this game, it's so colorful and happy, it's almost like a therapy that's well needed in times like these! The puzzles and platforming are great and I even got into the new battle system. Honestly speaking, had they made this exact game but kept the old battle system it would be my favorite Paper Mario by far. it has CHARM and SOOO MUCH LIFE to it. I just can't explain it, please don't boycott it for no reason, TRY, THIS, GAME!!!! I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Boss fights are a highlight of the combat system with the minion fights being frustrating when you can't see the correct line up. The writing and localisation is top notch as usual with Nintendo in house games and the world is certainly charming enough, but the choice to point out the blindingly obvious to the player every step of the way puts a dampener on the whole thing. So nothing special but worth it at a cut down price.

Oh, the mediocrity hurts! I believe the target audience for this game should be marked as children ages 4 to 12.
The story, the writing, the dialogues... They are all simply mediocre. Moreover, the lack of XP points makes most battles feel like a drag.
Sure enough, the graphics are sweet, but something just feels... Boring as hell. I wish I'd spent that money on any other Mario title.

Fortunately, coins are abundant in The Origami King, and they can always be used to help solve the puzzles for players who are stumped. Visually, the game is beautiful, and the music is among the best in the series!

I believe that Paper Mario fans, while perhaps disappointed by some missing aspects from games prior, will still find plenty to enjoy here. It's not the zenith among the series' entries, but The Origami King is still solid!

The battles are fun and some of the later ones are pretty puzzling. The boss battles in particular are all super diverse, force you to think, and are tons of fun. Some people say the battles are pointless because they give EXP instead of coins, but honestly I never ran from a fight. Battles are fun, so you don't need to attach some arbitrary incentive like EXP to make the player want to fight.

It's a shame review bombers brought the score down. The user score is way lower than it should be.

I've never felt so cheated out of 60 bucks. The combat is absolutely pathetic and there is zero incentive to complete it. If there was XP or a chance to gain items that would be one thing. The world is so much fun to explore and there's always something in the dialogue that makes me laugh. The battle system, while not perfect, has a certain fun to it and the boss battles are unique and interesting. I'm currently on the blue streamer area and I loved the water vellumental fight, and I'm super excited for the rubber band boss. Definitely would recommend, even to an older PM fan. The only thing I wish was different was partners, if we could have a party and have the battles scale in challenge and size along with your party, I think it would give a great sense of progression, which I feel is limited with how the party system works. Otherwise, great game, would recommend. Expand

The gameplay was certainly better than I expected from looking at trailers or videos. I want to add that I find puzzles and riddles very difficult so this was a challenge for me at times.

The graphics and art style are amazing in this game, the colours pop right off my monitor when playing the game. Also the framerate was good for the most part, when there is a lot of particles on screen (confetti is a good example) the framerate certainly dipped into the 20's.

-Travis Lee As a fan of the older games in the series like Paper Mario 64, Thousand Year Door, and Super Paper Mario, I'm quite pleased at this huge step in the right direction in Paper Mario: The Oragami King. This game is much wanted sequel TTYD that we all want. Yet, this game is one big step in that direction. It's as if they're testing the water, whilst trying to prove a point to Nintendo and Miyamoto who placed restriction on the Paper Mario Series ever since Production of Paper Mario: Stocker Star. This new entry in the series is a complete masterpiece in it's own right. Hence, it pulls off a 10 out of 10 score from me. You see this game is full of laughs, yet, it knows its fanbase well and that most of that fan base are adults. Thus, they've managed to add some much needed adult humor, easter eggs, and an emotional rollercoaster throughout this paper adventure. Intelligent Systems doesnt pull thier punches when it comes to emotional story telling, not one bit! Now, regarding battles there is still no XP to be warned, yet they make the coin system work! Every moment of this game is pure fun, nothing feels tedious and collecting toads are the incredibly fun. Keep up the great work Intelligent Systems, I know the next game will be even more astounding, oh, I cant wait!

A true visual masterpiece. The music is amazing and this game will undoubtedly be the winner of the Game Art Direction award at the next Game Awards, it is unrivaled, as Cuphead was in 2017.

This is the game we needed for this 2020, it is full of creativity in all aspects. The script is very good, and it is full of very funny dialogues that will make you take screenshots all the time. This Paper Mario is not typecast in just one genre, it has a bit of everything and that is its strength, for that reason The Origami King never bores you. The battle system is very ingenious and challenging, the mechanics to position the enemies before hitting them is something very original and entertaining, the countdown adds challenge and also, the use of weapons and objects during battles give it that touch of RPG game.

Don't worry if you are not adept at strategy, you can always ask the Toads in the stands for help or spend money to increase the countdown. The best thing about the game are the boss battles.

The main story will take you around 30 hours, in this game there is a lot to collect so you can entertain yourself a bit more looking for all the hidden Toads and trophies.

This is the type of games in which it is noted that the developers had complete freedom when creating the game, you are going to come across such rare and funny situations, that make the adventure very entertaining. What a great surprise this game has been. If you have a Nintendo Switch, go buy this game.

Poor controls and battle system like it's sending you to take remedial tests every time you get into an encounter. Why couldn't you just give us the option of skipping this. It literally ruins the entire fluidity and experience of the game.

I enjoyed every part of this game, it just sucks that everyone leaves bad reviews just because it isn’t The Thousand Year Door. If it isn’t an RPG, don’t criticise it for not having xp or party members. And no, battles aren’t pointless as they give you coins and confetti, which are important things in this game. This game doesn’t deserve 6.8.

Paper Mario Origami King wants to be inventive. Artistically, this opus is close to excellence due to humor and well-balanced characters. Despite this, some aspects (although varied) of exploration or combat are not well mastered ... But don't worry TOK remains a pleasant and surprising game for young and old alike.

A mostly fun and quirky adventure, Paper Mario: Origami King slots right into the series. The world, while nothing too special, is interesting to explore and full of decent puzzles and zany characters (not even just Toads, which is very nice), with the new exposition fairy, Olivia, being a particular standout. The graphics are aesthetically pleasing and fit the “paper” theme very well, the locales you visit are fun and interesting (the samurai-themed amusement park most of all), and the music is also quite good. Even with those positives, I have my gripes with the game: the lack of EXP, the mediocre battle system, and the story, in that order. While you can find Max Hearts and purchase accessories, there was no incentive to battle enemies for almost any reason due to there being no experience. It’s better than Sticker Star, of course, but a third game with a lack of EXP is a worrying trend. The battle system is original and fairly interesting, but a lot of it is just frustrating, trying to figure out how to line up enemies. I had much more fun after getting the puzzle solver item, but even then I found myself just paying Toads to do the lining up for me. The only thing you get from battles are coins, and since those are scattered all around the world, there isn’t much of an incentive to fight anything but the mandatory battles. The plot, lastly, is a very simple stop-the-bad-guy-from-taking-over-the-world story with no frills attached. Olly isn’t an interesting antagonist, with almost no personality besides being evil, and he looks like an emo teenager. There were a lot of missed opportunities for fights; the whole thing is that Olly is turning characters into evil origami. There could’ve been an Origami Peach fight, an Origami Bowser fight, or even an Origami Luigi fight, but it’s all Bowser’s minions, these new elemental spirit creatures (who aren’t interesting enough to make up for how long you spend running around looking for them), and origami-making tools. There was even a mention of how the Captain guy you find stole the submarine from the spa area (it makes sense in context), and I was convinced there’d be a fight or at least a mention of it. Nope. While definitely better than the last two installments in the series, Paper Mario: The Origami King lacks a lot of what made the first three games so special and I feel absolutely no need to return and play to 100% completion, or even to play it again. Overall, a short but fun experience with a few flaws. Expand

I can understand some people being frustrated by some aspects of the game like combat or the lackluster character design in some places, but this is truly one of the most, if not the most, charming paper mario. The dialogue and humor is some of the best to date, the world is the most beautifully crafted one yet, and the story is actually good. The soundtrack, for example, is absolutely amazing.
I find that most of the people rating this low have never played the game and are joining the hate bandwagon that the paper mario community seems to join just because the new games aren't carbon copies of TTYD or 64.
Many concepts change and I'm actually grateful for that since a lot of these new features are welcome and propel the game towards new heights and develop it further. All in all, I can't really understand why people truly hate this game. It's amazingly done, and one of the best mario games out there. I just wish people wouldn't rate it based on the online hate or even the lack of playing the game itself.
To conclude, this game is truly great. As a diehard fan of 64 and TTYD I feel like Nintendo is going in the right direction. There are of course things to improve, but overall this was really enjoyable. Gaming is to be enjoyed and to have fun, rather than screaming a new paper mario game isn't good just because it's not the same as a 20 year old title.

I understand that we always look for a new paper Mario game, and want it to be exactly like thousand year door. And I am also on the boat, but at the same time I also would like to recognize, in my personal opinion, what I think is a fantastic game. I thought the same about Super Paper Mario Wii, And I have not felt the same about a paper Mario game since. As I was not a fan of the 3DS paper Mario nor the Wii U version.

In Paper Mario origami king, although it does take away the RPG elements, Taking away our judgments of what we perceive a Paper Mario game to be, this game is really fantastic. The game makes the story very clear, at least in terms of determining who the main enemy is. Like most RPG Mario games, it has great humor, and a great cast of characters to boot. The different worlds it takes you through, are inventive, and offered wildly different challenges. There is a different game play throughout the game, making it continuously fresh. And it does find moments to tug at your heart strings, which is truly amazing for any game, let alone a Mario game. If there’s one thing I would like to see in future games, is more inventive boss character models.
The bosses in this game, in terms of their dialogue, we’re so creative and made you want to crush them, but, each major boss in this game happens to be some type of tool, you can find in a office setting. That part was somewhat disappointing, But, the boss battles themselves were really fun, inventive, and very humorous. They also provided a great challenge, the more and more you play the game.

I know puzzle Solving, in your battles, may not be everybody’s cup of tea. But paper Mario found a way to make that fresh, by giving you extra boost, whenever you solve a puzzle, while battling. It’s easier to look on YouTube, and look at the battle system, to see what I’m referring to. But, reward for solving a puzzle, getting extra points for damaging enemies, and the satisfaction of ending a very hard boss battle, is very tremendous in this game.

Overall, I would highly recommend this game, I would recommend that anyone played, play with your family, because of the cast of characters, soundtrack, the humor and everything in between, To me, this is one of Mario’s greatest outings, and it is a game that I will personally go back to from time to time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A wonderful world and charming script marred by a frustrating and lifeless battle system, Paper Mario: Origami King is a huge middle finger to fans of the franchise. While the script is tight and full of great humor, the actual gameplay is so intolerable that I jumped ship and bought Bug Fables before beating Chapter 3. Everything about the battle system is unrewarding.

The puzzles are frustrating, namely because of the looming timer, and provide no benefit beyond coins. The catch here is that you can amass 20,000 coins in a matter of minutes just by exploiting an easy wave battle in one of the very first areas. After you do that, there is literally no motivation to ever participate in an avoidable battle again since coinage is all you gain. The boss battles are almost fun but you still find yourself either taking a screenshot so you can mull over strategies or using an online guide—They’re not enjoyable enough to want to repeat so it’s either cheat or get mad and rage quit.

The “teammates” you get don’t even do anything. They randomly show up and attack in battles, often when it doesn’t even make sense. The bomb character showed up in one of my battles only to sit in the arena and sleep—which was especially confusing because (In the story) we had lost him and I was literally on my way to find him—apparently he was simultaneously stuck in a tree 2 screens down but also somehow able to join the fight? That’s pretty lazy development. The puzzle aspects are well-developed but the RPG aspects seem lazily tacked on.

Therein lies my issue with Paper Mario: Origami King—it’s a repetitive puzzle game deceitfully wearing the “Paper Mario” title. I’m sure there’s a market for this type of game but why did Nintendo force Intelligent Systems to turn one of the most beloved RPG franchises into an annoying brain teaser marathon? The last decent game in the series was Paper Jam on the 3DS. Fans have been craving the classic, turn-based RPG experience of the first 2 titles for over a decade. Some decent games have been developed but the magic of the original Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door seems to be gone forever.

Luckily you can save yourself $40 and just buy Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling which is basically Paper Mario reskinned with an insect theme—and honestly it does a great job of it. Almost nothing is innovated from the original Paper Mario games in the best way possible: all the magic and playability is still there AND it even has several ways of amping up the difficulty for people who want a challenge.

Overall verdict on Origami King: It’s a decent puzzle game but the RPG elements get in the way of the puzzles and the Puzzle Elements drain all life out of what little RPG play there is to be had. It is the worst of both worlds, which is a shame because the quips are pretty good. I recommend you just lookup the best moments on YouTube—watching someone else play Origami King is probably more satisfying than actually playing yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

My verdict is: 9/10 and here's why (since I know this game is being review-bombed, I'm giving it a 10 though):

    # battle system #

    Cons:

    - yes, there are no permanent partners nor exp points, and one could certainly argue if the series has moved on from RPG, then why have a turn-based battle system altogether
    - yes, most bosses are office stationaries

However, in my opinion, there's still enough motivation to battle in that you get a lot of coins (which help you in battles and bosses, as well as purchasing equipment and treasures) and confetti (which you need to cover non-bottomless holes and get harder to get in the open after a while).

    Pros:

    - the puzzle-based, ring system is quite fun and satisfying
    - boss battles are unique and challenge your expectations and strategy
    - because there is no exp progression, you don't need to worry about grinding to advance the story

    # soundtrack #

Oh man, it's just fantastic. From Wild West themes to traditional Japanese flute, the soundtrack really sets the mood to your adventure. I find myself just walking around Shogun Studios and Autumn Mountains, only to listen to that beautiful soundtrack.

The boss battles have a more metal feel to set the tone and there are sad moments too (no spoilers).

    No cons here.

The game is colorful and vibrant. Each area is unique, with a special highlight to Shogun Studios and The Great Sea. The effect and sound of confetti orbiting towards you is so good, and every interaction with either the scenario or other characters yields a reaction (most often a funny one).

    # story #

    Cons:

    - it's shorter than I had hoped. =(

It's a simple story, like all Paper Mario games. Not really a con, just, keep in mind that the script is not minding-blowing. It's funny as hell though.

    Pros:

    - there's depth in the characters, you get to relate to and care for them
    - you laugh all the time, the game is super funny, and you actually look forward to saving all the toads, just to hear what they have to say
    - you don't just walk around, you interact with the world in multiple ways and that's awesome
    - Easter eggs, if you explore enough you'll find them

I respect the fans that long for the old Thousand Year Door games (I played it myself and I have it in high, high regard) and I understand how they feel regarding the turn the franchise took.

I myself don't mind the turn they took and I think this is a memorable game, I really enjoyed it and am already looking forward to the next iteration in the franchise. =)

The game runs perfectly, is very fluid docked or portable.

The OST is a gem and most definitely in the top 5 of the best this year 2020 (as the game finally)

The story, one of the best in the series (the best?), because there is emotion at several times and it's something I really did not expect to see in Paper Mario. Humor is omnipresent, as always in the series and the variety of situations and staging allows a constant renewal of the show.

The gameplay is really very innovative, it's clearly tactical RPG, I'm not very good at puzzles but I really took a lot of fun throughout the game, and what about the awesome boss fights, again with each time new combat situations that came to refuel the way you have to understand the system.

I finished the game in about 37 hours, a perfect lifespan for this type of game. I've never been bored, which is always the mark of the big games on my side.

I do not necessarily have a flat, my gluttony would have liked the adventure to be longer in places and in some temples, but it's quibble.

    It's 9/10 on my side.

The game is extremely charming. The visuals, humor, and overall STYLE of the game all land. The boss battles all have their own unique mechanics to them that keep you thinking.

The biggest issue I have with the game is the standard "Ring combat" that happens with normal enemies. In the late game, I had so many coins that I just used the "Cheer" mechanic to avoid having to waste time

It doesn't kill the game for me though, and there are several moments through the entire game that made me feel genuine emotion. I certainly recommend this game to fans of puzzle games and fans of comedic adventures, because that is what this is at its very core.

People looking for another TTYD will find the game familiar enough in its looks and dialogue, but lacking in the deeper combat mechanics and multi-member party system.

The past few installments I’ve skipped out on because I’ve heard they deviate from the RPG style of the originals. I had such high hopes for the Origami King.

    Pros:
Funny. The dialogue will have you laughing, which I always loved about these games. The graphics are great too - big, bold, lush colors, and lots of well-crafted environments and characters.

    Cons:
The battle gameplay. Horrible. NOT FUN. An actual nuisance to understand, much less enjoy or master. Brutal, unexplained battle rules that change without any notice, preface, or reason. One of my favorite parts of Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door was the battle mechanic. This game has completely ruined that aspect. Boss battles are boring, regular battles are annoying, and the motion mechanic is a headache. (You have to quickly shake, slam, lift, etc. your Switch over and over again to defeat bosses). Poorly thought out and even more poorly executed.

Each battle is accompanied by a “puzzle” - you have to line enemies up in a certain way in a certain time frame. It is seriously unfun, and often stressing and frustrating.

There are no EXP points. So basically you get some extra health as you go through the game, but even that simple element from the original games is gone.

    Summary:
Honestly, I don’t know who this game is for. Fans of the originals will dislike the major game changes, and new players are more likely to enjoy Odyssey or something in the classic Mario vein. I started out earnestly trying to like this game, and have ended up regretting buying it the more I’ve played it. I will definitely be trading it in.

The amount of charm, love, and hard work put in it is so clear at first glance, you could tell everyone had fun making this.

Firstly, the battle system. It was nice, I like how it involves puzzles, but it gets boring and repetitive over time with little to no changes other than the enemies that aren't even that great in variety either which is usually why I try to stay away from the enemies. The coins being the incentive to it is fine, but the return of XP would have made it so much better. It almost feels like they're experimenting with it, at least to me. How it's implemented in the boss fights though are so much better though, more engaging with actual strategies involved rather than mindless whacking and stomping. I'd say it's the most fun I had in a turn-based battle system.

And then the soundtrack, probably one of the best that I've heard from a video game, almost every piece is worth bobbing your head to and they fit the situations they are used in really well. The battle music is made to get you in the mood to brawl, and man does it work so well! And believe me on this one, but I've had the music stuck in my head for an entire week now ever since I started playing the game. That's just how good it is.

I think the best part of this game is the writing. It's so simple and funny at first, but it's just as effective as well. I could not count how much I'd laughed at the jokes, but even then there are still moments that are sure to hit you hard to remind you of the stakes you have in the story. The characters are also really well written, I always found myself picking my favorites just because of their little quotes.

As someone who plays games rather slowly and takes them lightly, I always like to explore for possible secrets hidden beneath the surface, and this game does not let down on that part with numerous collectibles waiting to be found and toads crying for their much-needed rescues.

A few parts of the game are, admittedly, disappointing to the point I don't feel completely satisfied, but the entire journey was a real fun ride and many fond memories were created after playing what took a full week because I wanted to see everything the game's got and in the end, I got everything I wanted, and it was amazing. Amazing for what it is.

I would definitely recommend it for the newer fans who will buy this as their very first Paper Mario game. Trust me, you will enjoy this one!

The music in this game is fantastic, easily one of the best parts of the game.

The only big "problem" that I experienced was that the battle system in this game, for the most part, can get very old quickly. The puzzles get a bit too repetitive after a rather short time with them, and often after you solve the puzzle, and move to the combat phase, it gets a bit boring. The combat itself is rather uninvolved at this point. Except for the boss battles, all round those were my favourite fights. While the game might not be the RPG that the first installments were, this game holds its own charm and value and all in all was an enjoyable experience.

Indeed, I've always been in love with the Paper Mario art style, ever since I first played Thousand Year Door back in middle school. Sad to say, I've tried just about all of them, and with the *POSSIBLE* exception of Super Paper Mario, they have all lacked the RPG magic through which Thousand Year Door had won over my heart. Each new Paper Mario release is a more hollow shell of their legendary Gamecube predecessor, with the heart and soul of the game - 1000 yr Door's *actually fun* turn based battle sequences and *crucial* leveling system - smashed like an origami Toad under Mario's puzzle-solving hammer, leaving the miniscule spark of spirit that remains in the franchise to be painted over (no pun intended - PS Color Splash sucked too) with ever-shinier visuals and marketing in an attempt to hide the fact that ever since those Gamecube glory days, Nintendo just keeps missing the mark on delivering an ENTERTAINING gaming experience with their exhausted Paper Mario franchise. I stupidly pre-ordered Origami King, as I do with every new Paper Mario (I never learn my lesson) with the earnest hope that somehow, someway, somebody at Nintendo will realize that the main thing that made the Paper Mario RPG fun was that it had... hmmm... lets see.... RPG ELEMENTS. Origami King lacks all elements of an RPG except for a storyline, which I guess I could admit was relatively decent for the first 3 levels/world portions that I managed to get through before being permanently sedated by the almost savagely boring gameplay, which revolves around painstakingly searching visually-stimulating environments for Toads folded into dumb shapes and sequestered in even dumber hiding places, with a heavy dose of doing-your-best-to-avoid-agonizingly-unsatisfying-puzzle-battles-with-classic-mario-series-villains. In my dream scenario where Nintendo actually reads and processes any of the above grievances, I'm sure they'd retort by ignoring 90% of them and fixating on the final point: "no! These Koopahs are different, you jerk! They're made of Origami now!!!" Touche, Nintendo. Touche. Now be a dear and walk me through the Nintendo eShop refund process before I have my boy Mario bop your pretty Origami head with his hammer. Expand

If you are not a fan , you will be absolutely stunned by sheer amount adventures, musics, visuals, and unexpected turn of events this game is prepared to offer. It is worth mentioning that this game does not run out of what to offer until its end.

If you are a fan of TTYD and liked it only because its fight mechanics, you may be better suited to Bug Fables, not this one.

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
