    There's two major issues :
First, Olivia. I just hate her so much. She's always commenting everything happening in the game and it's really annoying. She switch with the poorest jokes to the most obvious advice like : "A key ! Maybe we can use it on a door ?" when there's the **** door in front of the key. She take all the place in the game and it brings me to the second point :
Mario is brain dead. He's not reacting to anything to the point it's not a Paper Mario game but Origami Olivia. He just fight or do what Olivia tells him to.
I could also talk about Mario getting stronger only by buying weapons or finding random health bonuses, worthless coins.

To keep it simple : This game doesn't have a Paper Mario soul, it's more like a slow paced puzzle-rhythm game that make you want to play the original Paper Mario.

I understand why some players would have a hard time adjusting to the puzzle battle system, but I found it came pretty naturally after some practice and the game does offer some ways to get hints. It seemed just challenging enough without being too difficult and I don't think it takes away from the core game. I do agree that there's not particularly an incentive to battle enemies after a certain point and you spend some time avoiding them.

I think each entry in the Paper Mario series has had its own strengths and weaknesses, but I think Origami King does a fantastic job of blending the various aspects together in it's own way. It's one of only a few games I've played where my only disappointment was that I'd finished the game and the story was completed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Consistent theme throughout. Lots of puzzles. Not a fan of ALL the battles being done through the puzzle ground lay out (meaning the basic folded soldiers, i avoided them to simply avoid the 5minutes it took to battle them). Love the story throughout. The ending, was heart breaking to me. I didn't want to see Olivia become competitive nonexistent. My only complaint really is just all the battles were the same. In comparison I would say the super paper mario wii is still superior. I hope to see more super paper mario games in the future. Expand

I couldn't put this game down. It is incredible charming with its beautiful visual style, music, and humor. Its battle system stays a bit too easy for a bit too long, but once it starts scaling up there's a lot of fun to be had in fights. The game can feel a bit slow at times with long unskippable dialogue, but if you're a more slow paced player like me you won't mind it one bit. The gameI couldn't put this game down. The game has such incredible writing, it deserves some extra time in the spotlight. These small things however do make it hard to recommend to someone who likes charging through a game. The world here was made to be slowly wandered through, so if you're up for that type of gameplay, you will have a blast running around and hitting everything with your hammer. The mechanics are fun and a bit simple, but there are so many great ideas that it's hard to ignore how innovative this game is. It may not be the classic Paper Mario RPGs from our pasts, but its something more. Something new. While the old formula didn't need fixing, this game surpasses it and I will be glad to get more of this style of game. If this game sounds REMOTELY fun to you, get it. Seriously. That's what I did and I'm now in love. Would've been a 10/10 if it weren't for the lack of options given to the fast paced player. Expand

So I played this game expecting nothing, and in the end I really enjoyed it, I even got the 100% on it.

It has many positives. World is well designed, with secrets everywhere, exploring is probably the most fun thing of this game, just finding hidden blocks, holes, and treasures feels rewarding, and time goes fast by doing that. As for the battle system... Well, here is the tricky part. For me it was fine at the beginning, then mid-game I didn't enjoy it that much, and then for the end of the game I actually enjoyed it again, as I learnt how to play the game much better, how to use my weapons properly and the Toads' help when needed, and this makes battle go fast. This makes you actually get more coins, which is important, as if you don't play battles properly, they are almost useless, as you don't get enough coins and experience points don't exist in this game. It's not the easiest battle system to get into, I get it, but it works well once you figure it out. And bosses are actually quite fun, especially when you fight them in the virtual machine of Toad Town; without help of accessories, you actually get punished for your mistakes.

All in all, for me the game was a lot of fun, it's very original, and it keeps on surprising you with the situations that happen. You also have some good laughs, as always with this series. Sure, it may be hard to get into due to the battle system, you have to get used to it, and also, some parts of the game are a bit slow, but positives outweigh negatives for this one.

As a final consideration, I would love for Paper Mario to go back to the original battle system, but, if they decide to be creative, and achieve the quality of this game, I won't complain.

    Battles are unintuitive and frustrating;
Visuals are fine, but too paper-ish. Look at PM64, TYD and SPM: Paper-ish world does not make a good Paper Mario, and a good PM does not require one either.
    And no, no real partners...
    6/10 as normal gamer;
    0/10 for PM series fan.

The mixed reviews I read almost prevented me of playing this, but I'm glad I did. It's not the best RPG ever or even the best in the Paper Mario series, but still there's so much to enjoy here. It's full of charisma you would expect of a Mario game, and looks so beautiful! Loved how they fused the origami esthetics into the environments. So charming and creative. From what I noticed, the battle system is where controversy is. It's far for been that bad, but indeed it gets annoying because sometimes it gets too long to figure how to arrange the regular enemies in rows and groups. However it works really well during the bosses battles. Maybe with some small tweaks they would get the perfect balance of a good battle system. It's not bad though. It's possible to shorten or make it easier by throwing coins to the audience formed by the toads you find hidden around the world. But if there's something that really annoys me is this origami partner you have the whole game. Remember Fi from Zelda Skyward Sword? Just as inconvenient. And last, but not least, please get rid once and for all of these f... sliding panel puzzles.

Gameplay - Great. I had fun with the battle system. In the end, depending on my mood, I would battle the enemies or I would kill them with a jump or hammer without entering into battle mode. 90% of the time I would battle them because I would receive a lot of coins like that. If I just jump or hammer them, I would only get one coins. I did enjoy the puzzle element of each battle. No two battles were ever alike because of the freshness of this system.

What I am surprised to read in most reviews, is that you end up running from the fights. I do not know if what they meant when they say “run” is that you actually can one hit kill the enemies because you are powerful enough AFTER leveling up with hearts. During my 32 hour play through I never run from anything. Also, apart from coins and confetti, the incentive for battle is the puzzle solving and kickass music.

Also the other problem of to much coin of confetti. Me, personally, my main source of coins and confetti for the entire game were battles. First, lets talk about coins. I needed coins to buy items or trophies, They were EXPENSIVE. I even run out of money once. AFTER 25 hours, when you reach a special island (which is optional), you get overloaded with coins AFTER completing a trial. That was near the final part of the game though. Second, lets talk about confetti, I know you can get it on trees or flowers. That is an emergency source of confetti. When you are exploring, fighting, covering holes and discovering secrets, your main source of confetti are the fights. Of course if during that whole action process, no enemies are left and you run out of confetti to cover that last portion of a hole, THEN you get it from a tree or a flower.Trees and flowers are not your main source of confetti.

A lot reviewers out there sound like they wanted to rush through the game. In that case, it is obvious their main source of confetti was going to be nature and their main source of coins was just going to be the environment. Then, because they were rushing an avoiding battles, the few battles they would get into, they would just pay the toads 100-200 coins to solve the puzzle an automatically win. If I played like this, I would also detest the game.

Another thing I see that a lof of reviewers fail to mention, is that this game give you OPTIONS on how difficult you want it to be. For example, there are charms that give you more health or more defense. There is a way to have toads solve the puzzles in each battle if you pay them. If you do not want to pay them, than some puzzles in battles you will not solve and then you will rely on buying more powerful items to fight a longer fight. All of these things are OPTIONAL. Personally, I always solved the puzzles. I only used the toads help when my energy was low an I could not risk getting killed.

The game is just a breath of fresh air! It is so beautiful, funny and creative. I needed a game as original as this for a long time. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Also, do not read other reviews, because there are idiots that spoil some parts.

Very polished experience. The story is brilliant, funny, and unexpectedly dark and somber at times. I do see a valid critique against the combat system, there were times where it felt tedious and unnecessary. And because there is no real experience system the intended reward system feels confused. Overall as an experience it is memorable and delightful.

I know some people aren't a fan of the puzzle combat but I really do encourage you to give yourself over to it because it is a lot of fun once you get into it and start challenging yourself to get perfect runs, and the boss battles are true highlights as each has it's own way of making path obscured and they WILL throw you off once or twice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario The Origami King while a decent game on it's own it still suffers a lot of problems with the previous two games.

    PROS:

    -The soundtrack

-The visual art style, though reused from Color Splash

-Some good moments, charm, funny and good character personality

-Bowser not being the main villain, in fact not even a boss at all but your ally.

-No World Map and interconnected open areas.

-Olivia is a likable character than Kersti and Huey.

    -Luigi has a big role.

    CONS:

-Battles are boring, repetitive, and still unreasonable, you may as well avoid them because you can find tons of coins and confetti in the overworld, besides even from battles you get way too much. The battle system is repetitive and tedious. The attacking variety is lacking with a lack of upgrades too.

-Lack of NPCs, just generic Toads and Bowser's minions (only on your side because of the Folded Soldiers). Paper gimmick of original characters, Not even Yoshis (which were in Color Splash, but are hostile to you, minus the green one), Penguins, Bob-omb Buddies Piantas, Nokis, Odyssey NPCs, etc.

-Partners are very generic in design, They are also very useless because, besides Professor Toad, they have no overworld interaction, They are just Ai and only attack at random chances and they are overpowered and just added for the heck of it. They can't be kept for each chapter.

-Bosses are mostly just generic office tools and paper you can buy at a dollar store. The worst way to introduce new bosses in the weak modern era of Paper Mario.

-Enemy variety is lackluster and some are overly hidden from other enemies. There are new ones but only appear in Bowser's Castle and they are gone after you beat it.

-Aside from Chapter 2, The worlds are your usual Mario worlds. (Grass, Desert, Beach, Sky)

-King Olly is the worst villain out of all general and Paper Mario villains. His motives were just getting a little squiggle writing on his body by his creator and with it to remind him of being a good king and he gets so enraged and wants to destroy every Toad all over it. He also lacks having any screentime.

-No intermissions like the first 3 games after a chapter are beaten.

-Mario has no voice lines like in TTYD and SPM, just sound effects yet Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Toads can have voice clips oddly.

-Over constant use of Paper gimmicks and jokes again which has gotten very stale. Paper Mario was not about being paper, it was meant to look like a pop-up book with a 2D art style to reflect being a storybook, it was just a visual aesthetic of making the world look alive and cartoony, not being about crafts which disrespect Ryota Kawade's vision for the series. Also while Mario was fallen down like paper and leaves falling that was more of a visual gag because once he lands, he's still hurt. Curses which turn into paper forms from TTYD weren't Mario's own powers they were cursed upon him when unlocking and finding the black chests

    -No replayability.

    -Lack of sidequests.

    -Some empty level design

-Worst of all, to 102% the game, you need to NOT use accessories and get NO Game Overs and the reward isn't worth it at all, You get no reward for fin
You aren't even given a heads up for it and if you make that mistake and find out like what you're reading here, You have the beat the entire game all over again if you make one slip up with those tasks. Horrible game design for completionists to do.

This game is still not a proper return to form and neither is this game a true RPG either which is what Paper Mario was always about at its core.
The Paper Mario series needs a different and better team that either brings back the original staff from the original two Paper Mario games or get a brand new better team that can put more care into the series. Especially bringing back the original Chief Director, Ryota Kawade from the first three Paper Mario games. Taro Kudo, Risa Tabata and most especially Kensuke Tanabe need to be removed from this series because they're tone-deaf to the fans and prefer only their way of which backfires and Kensuke Tanabe has alienated the Paper Mario fans Even his interviews were disgusting to read because he thinks changing the gameplay system will fix everything. Paper Mario suffers from having both an inconsistent identity and gameplay which hurts the series branding and core. So in that conclusion why fix what the first two games did great on? SPM may have removed the turn-based battles, but it at least had RPG elements and especially leveling up and the best story in the Mario series of all with tons of spark. The Origami King is just another baby-step from Sticker Star and Color Splash little improvements which is not a proper way of addressing criticism. At this point, the Paper Mario series is dying.

Gameplay: 2/2 I found the combat in the Origami King to be very fun. However, during the Purple/Green Streamers, I felt less compelled to engage in combat. Nevertheless, the ring based combat in Origami King was a delightful experience.

The Origami King’s soundtrack is magnificent. Some highlights are the Streamer Battles, Event Battle, Boss Battles (Vellumentals/Legion of Stationary, Toad Town, Picnic Road, Autumn Mountain, Shogun Studios, etc.
    Story: 1/2
I felt that The Origami King’s story felt a bit short and lackluster. It definitely has some highlights though (eg. Bobby’s death). However, the rest feels like filler to extend the content of Origami King.
Characters: 1/2 The characters are just generic Mario enemies. The party members are kidda interesting. Bobby is my favorite character in the entire game. However, Professor Toad, Kamek, and Bowser Jr. are mediocre at best. Oliva is just annoying. King Olly is a “unique character”, however his intentions for folding everything into origami are childish and racist. Overall, The Origami King is a very good game. The gameplay, graphics, and music are beautiful. However, I felt that the story was too short and the characters were too generic. 8/10

The frustration with the core gameplay casts such a shadow over the rest of the game, that it becomes very hard to reccomend this title. This is, frankly, a tragedy when everything outside of the core battles is so excellently crafted. Gameplay is king however, and all of the sugar coating in the world will make me think back fondly on this game. Expand

So the first thing ill say is this game is absolutely beautiful. The humor is right up my alley, I found it extremely enjoyable. I liked the adventure and was very open to the combat system. I liked the adventure and was very open to the combat system. One concept I see that gets people caught up is the lack of EXP, and thus no need to fight, and well, this is only partially true. Gold is your EXP essentially, its your reason to fight and progression is your reason to fight. You will find in some areas that you actually need to grind the gold to get treasures, which means there is a reason to fight.

Having said that LETS GO OVER THE NEGATIVES as I see them.

So theres a few issues with this game. While I am very open to the puzzle concept it does become rather annoying and also feels rather pointless. Not because of the exp, but because there simply is no losing in this game. Loading up on 15 Mushrooms within the first hour of playing the game I was left with 15 Mushrooms as the game ended. In other words, the features they have they render nullified by their own systems.

Its a very confused and unsure development and it continues for pretty much every aspect of the game. Fail a challenge? Its okay, we will make it easier after as few as 1 failed attempt sometimes! Why have any semblence of challenge to begin with then? Who knows. Heres a fun find Toad concept! Go find them! Also, we will give you this item which finds them for you and thus removing the need to actually find them. Again, a system that works against itself. It does this for pretty much every system where they feel like tacked on concepts that very quickly feel like chores, not meaningful gameplay mechanics, simply because they undermine their own game at every corner.

As I mentioned gold is the reason to go into combat, however there is many points in the game where you can essentially just get free gold. Its not a secret or anything, its just a standard part of the experience, which does undermine its own combat system. You get the trend here. Nothing in this game remains relevant and the devs didn't have enough of a backbone to make their systems meaningful, even if that initially seemed like the intention, they too quickly flip flop on it.

My primary gripe with the characters would actually just be... one. Olivia... I have never come across a more annoying or less likable character. If she isn't saying something completely ridiculous, then shes literally backseating you for the ENTIRE GAME. She is essentially the tutorial....that never goes away. The game doesn't ease you in and then let you go, it CONSTANTLY HOLDS YOUR HAND. It CONSTANTLY backseats you. Forget to save? Oh Olivia will let you know every step of the way. Lose your way slightly and enjoying discovering literally anything? TOO BAD OLIVIA IS THERE TO SPOIL IT! Its.... so unnecessary, and quickly feels like these are becoming confused. They harken back to the characters of Super Mario World, a nostalgic practice, yet you would think this games meant exclusively for 7 year olds or under.

Now I realize this is Nintendo, but god man. Some of their recent practices aren't just casual, they basically play the game for you. I desperately hope this practice stops and that Zelda isn't the only game someone with a functioning brain has to play on the system.

So why a 7? Because the overall experience is honestly extremely enjoyable. I don't always finish games and I finished this one, but only because the story and concepts, and err "some" characters are enjoyable. Bobby ftw.

I can't believe that Nintendo continues doing this. This could have been such a great Paper Mario but no. Nintendo always neglects their audience and the fans of the franchise. This element gave value to fighting and felt rewarding in a way. The origami king was a very good idea, I loved the theme but it has major drawbacks that literally made me want to sell the game before finishing it. Luckily since I was skeptical I bought it physical so I could resell it if it wasn't great and well it is not great at all.

    Major negative points:
    - Lack of RPG elements
    - Fighting is useless and after a while is boring with such gimmicky features
    - Coins are not scarce at all and defeat the purpose of true reward
    - The above breaks everything since you can pay for any weapon so why not just buying the strongest one. This defeats the purpose of any other item/weapon.
    - Every time you complete a main level it rewards you with useless bags of confetti which is an unlimited material so why do you need bigger bags anyways?
    - Nintendo goes again with a useless diorama thing with collectibles that don't add anything
    - Did you like playing difficult games or at least challenging? Well Origami King is for dummies to the extent I even felt offended at how easy Nintendo makes it. And when it gets interesting in some puzzles guess what, if you did not do it in the first 2 tries then go to super easy mode...
    - Why do I care about mushrooms at all. Every corner there is additional HP so inventory management is again useless.

    Summary:
If it weren't for the lack of elements and gimmicks this game would have been great. The story is good, jokes are okay, the theme is pretty nice. But it all falls and feels like a chore. I ended up just skipping every enemy I can because you kill enemies for coin but you need coin for items. And killing enemy is boring so why not saving yourself some time by not getting enemies and coin.

Another thing I was extremely disappointed is the lack of personality. I mean common Nintendo, you have always dressed Toads and make them interesting. You have TOadette for instance but no. Nintendo wanted to go with this hidden agenda of not portraiting female or male traits which makes it super boring. The first games had incredible female and male secondary characters. Just a disappointment.

They probably knew this which is why some of the boss fights abandon the battle system and function as an action type play style instead. Those surprise fights were much more fun than the usual ring combat, and are largely the reason i am giving a more fair thoughtful review

I will say that I do like the way currency is handled in this game, it initially feels pointless because you get so much, but it turns out that you will be spending all of it if you're playing the game to its fullest. the game also has a function similar to the korok seeds in zelda breath of the wild, with the toads. it becomes a little minigame to find all the creative ways toads are hidden in the world. This started off as fun, but after maybe like 8 hours into the game, I didn't really like it anymore. It needed to provide a better benefit than it did to motivate you to find them

All in all, i thought the game was good-ish but does not live up to the experience that is paper mario the thousand year door

The puzzles at the beginning of each battle were challenging enough that you would feel super smart when you got it - and some were hard enough that you had to skip / get help from the toads. I felt like there was a really good balance.

In terms of the lack of EXP that people were upset about - I still felt like Mario was getting stronger throughout the game - your health bar and strength would increase, you would collect more and more coins which enabled you to extend the time you spent on puzzles (which was handy as they get harder as the game goes on) and you can also get accessories which increase your health, decrease damage taken etc. So it did still feel a lot like an RPG to me - albeit an unconventional one.

All the other stuff was fantastic:

beautiful, sharp, colourful and varied environments

great environmental puzzles and secrets everywhere

    Hilarious, witty dialogue

So much variety in gameplay. Sometimes youre solving puzzles, youre in a quiz show, dogfight battle in midair, QTEs, fleeing hordes of goombas, real time battles, hunting ninjas in a theme park etc etc

I just finished my playthrough at 35 hours last night and feel sad about it! An adventure I really enjoyed and will play again one day.

It feels like it's learned from mobile games about how to dripfeed gameplay mechanics to sell back to the player for real money. As if they created a slightly less satisfying game on purpose so you'd like it more when they offer you a way to get round it.

It feels like it's learned from mobile games about how to dripfeed gameplay mechanics to sell back to the player for real money. As if they created a slightly less satisfying game on purpose so you'd like it more when they offer you a way to get round it.

The way this game implements difficulty is always at odds with what I'm expecting. There's times where the game will rush so quickly to give me a hint that it actually curtails my exploration, interaction and fun. I'll still be at the "breaking everything for goodies" stage and it'll solve the puzzle for me. Then other times it's a difficulty spike out of nowhere.

It seems like it's always giving you ways to mitigate the actual gameplay, which kind of influences how I feel about the gameplay, as if perhaps they weren't sure it was alright on its own. Combat seems like what happens when you play the game badly, so you get the ability to evade lots of it. Failing the puzzle makes turnbased combat your punishment, but you can pay to make combat deal with itself anyway, and you'll have hundreds of powerful healing items. You get items that find hidden items for you. The hint system is almost always a clear indicator of what to do, if it hasn't already forced you to go the direction it wants you to.

Your weapons break...occasionally. Why? You get loads through finding boxes, it's really cheap to buy more, and I don't believe anyone has ever run out. Is the purpose of this to force the player to have 20 identical boots in their inventory? While you can only carry 3 boots and 3 hammers into battle, you can change them out at any time during battle. Why have the "only carry 3" thing if you're actually carrying all of them? I don't dislike the mechanic, I just think it's bloated nonsense that thankfully never matters.

I always dragged my heels when it came to the boss battles, they were such a low point I'd often put the Switch to sleep as they started up, to deal with later.

That said, it's a fun game and I really enjoyed it! But even though the good stuff is enough to make it worth playing, there's not much to say about it* and the only thing I'll ever remember is how much I hated the combat and how weirdly the systems in it work against each other.

*it looks nice, it controls well, it is often funny, you collect lots of things.

As we all know, the series decidedly did NOT improve after that. I have never played Sticker Star or Color Splash because everything that I have seen and read about these games just made me sad.

So when Nintendo announced a new Paper Mario for the Switch, I was of course vaguely optimistic at first, but then really more pessimistic than anything else, because this looked essentially like Color Splash 2. I complained about the absence of: XP, badges, a traditional battle system, partners, unique characters from the Mushroom Kingdom etc. before the game even came out.

Nevertheless, I could not help but feel pretty excited for the release, maybe because the whole year has been pretty slow on Switch, or maybe just because I had not played a Paper Mario game in half an eternity. Despite prematurely hating on the game, I decided to just give it a chance and downloaded it on release date. At least after playing it, I would actually know what I'm talking about.

So, was I right about the sticking points above? Yes. I believe that if Nintendo implemented all these tropes from the first two Paper Mario games that established the franchise and made it popular IN THE FIRST PLACE, Origami King would be a MASTERPIECE. The way it is now, it is "just" a very good game.

How could that be? How can the game be good even if it misses all these crucial elements mentioned above? Well, the writing, for one thing, is absolutely superb. This is probably one of the funniest and wittiest video games ever created. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous and the level/world design is very inspired and original. All the chapters are very distinct from another and offer a huge variety of approaches to game structure. The soundtrack...THE SOUNDTRACK! Do me a favour: Go on Youtube right now and listen to "Snif City" and tell me that that's NOT an absolute banger. The game is full of memorable tunes like this from all kinds of different genres.

Navigating the over-world, looking for treasures and hidden Toads and filling up holes with confetti is very rewarding.

Now, for the combat system: It is very unusual and I would prefer a traditional combat system or, at the very least, to have XP re-integrated. The last point would give you an actual incentive to battle. As it is now, you only get coins and confetti, which can easily be obtained by other methods in most situations. However, this style of combat can still be fun. The regular battles kind of started to annoy me by the end of the game, simply because they took up so much time, but the boss battles were always exciting and interesting (if a little too easy, like the whole game).

All in all, Paper Mario is just FUN. You know, the unique Nintendo brand of straight-forward FUN. I was just having a good time playing this and I found myself wishing that the game would go on longer at the end because I was enjoying myself so much. I'm currently in the final throes of 100%ing the game and I'm probably going to play it again at some time. So I can only recommend this to everyone looking for a good time. Even if you don't necessarily agree with the direction that the series has taken after Thousand Year Door, like me, I would still strongly encourage you to give it a chance. You might just be surprised at how much there is to like about this game.

Pretty disappointing game, the battle system gets old fast. While the game looks nice and has interesting levels and dialogue it wasn't enough to keep me interested. If I could have gotten a refund I would have and I cannot recommend purchasing this game.

Honestly speaking, I had fun with the combat for probably the first 12 encounters and now dread even playing the game further after beating the 3 level boss. Is it hard? No. Is it time consuming, way more then you think. The humor and writing is great, probably the best in the Paper Mario series... but the lack of a compelling combat system, interesting hub world and just freedom in general, doesnt make up for it. This Paper Mario game feel like more of a chore then a fun experience. I regret my purchase and continue to be disappointed with the direction taken with this series. I give it a 1/10, because of how overrated I feel this game is. The 10/10s will never make Nintendo and their developers change their ways... if anything it will only encourage them to create poorly designed games Expand

Having just completed the game, and as a long-standing fan of the franchise, I can now share my thoughts about Paper Mario: The Origami King with you.

    PROS
-The visuals and soundtrack are absolutely incredible.
-It maintains (most of) the humor Paper Mario fans have known to love, and adds some more whimsical charm to form a very pleasant mixture.
-Creative locations, puzzles, hidden secrets, and boss fights.

    CONS
-The battle system is boring after about ten battles, and the fact that there is no progression system makes random encounters tedious. At some point in the game I was actively avoiding fights and disliked any forced battle I came across. When the main gameplay element of your game is not fun, that's not a good thing.
-Because the game is a bit more whimsical than Paper Mario 64 and The Thousand-Year Door, the game lacks some of the RPG- and story-depth of those entries.
-Lack of side-quest content and replayability.

    CONCLUSION
Paper Mario: The Origami King takes the Paper Mario franchise to a new direction, but not a successful one. Whilst it maintains and improves on many of the elements that make the Paper Mario franchise so appealing - good humor, creative puzzles, etc. - the stripping away of the battle system of the original Paper Mario and many of the RPG elements has not made the game more fun. If Nintendo and Intelligent Systems ever decide to make a game that embraces Paper Mario's traditional gameplay roots with the visuals and charm of The Origami King, they may just have a masterpiece on their hands - But this is not it.

FINAL GRADE: 7+ out of 10.

The story is good and funny. My only complaint is the battle system. In game battle requires you to move the monsters to certain positions to increase damage. This is fun at first, but will be a little repetitive after 50~60 matches. The rewards for battles are all coins, which would be more interesting if we can get more different items. Despite these complaints, I still pretty enjoy the whole game and I would recommend people with switch should give it a try.

PS: I would like to give this game a 8.5/10 but I can not. Therefore, I give it a 9/10 since I have a great time playing this with my friends.

They all are very different, extremely beautiful in graphics, always filled with new ideas and never boring. Do not bother too much about the battles. The game gives you plenty of opportunities to avoid them (even without literarily running away from enemies). The boss battles are great. When I noticed that „weapons“ are wearing off, I thought that would be a „downer“ like when I heard about it in „Breath of the Wild“. But like in Zelda just don‘t worry, you‘ll always have enough hammers and shoes at your disposal. I never backtracked once. I personally consider the game not to be too easy to be enjoyable. Yes, you will hardly see a „Game Over“ screen, but that is not something that makes the game less fun to me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've found that most the negative review's complaints are solely based on the fact that this isn't a carbon copy of the first two games. Stuff like "No EXP, battles are useless, partners aren't literally the most in-depth creations for any game ever, etc." They are missing the point. Paper Mario is no longer an RPG series. Yes, that sucks, and I too kind of wish the series would go back to its roots, but judging this game based on its merits as an RPG is so stupid. Of course it's not very good at being an RPG, because it's not an RPG, it's an action-adventure game with some RPG elements like turn-based battles.

People who say there is no incentive to battle because there is no experience points baffled me. First of all, there's still coins, which are quite useful in this game unlike the past two, and second of all, THE BATTLES ARE FUN. I took place in most of the battles not because I needed to grind to survive the late game, but because I ENJOYED THEM. If the only incentive to battle is to make your character more powerful and not because they are fun, then I think that is a failed battle system. Origami King's battle system makes you think, and I felt super cool when I was able to do late-game battles in one turn without any help from the Toads. Maybe these battles aren't the most strategy intensive, but let's not forget, this game is not an RPG. The battles do not need to have a ton of strategy to be fun, because they can be fun and challenging in other ways. The bosses are also extremely fun, and you actually have to use strategy in them IN ADDITION TO THE RING BASED SYSTEM which I thought was extremely cool. Also I wanted to add that at first I was extremely disappointed that the Legion of Stationery, well, existed. But after the first couple I realized that they had extremely diverse and creative personalities, and their gimmicks were all centered around their real-world uses which was very fun to navigate around.

Now let's talk about things that Origami King straight up does better than the original games in my opinion. The soundtrack is one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, which is something that even the most diehard haters of this game's new direction can't deny. Some songs are catchy, some are energetic, some are epic, some are emotional, and many are a mix of these elements. Pretty much every track in this game serves its purpose and sounds great doing so. There are so many songs that I could just listen to for hours. Honestly, the music is probably my favorite aspect of the game.

Along with this music comes some incredible looking areas. The first streamer area was probably the weakest in this department because it was admittedly a little standard. Mostly generic forest, Toad Town, generic grasslands, etc. However, every single other area is so unique and beautiful. Autumn Mountain is perhaps my favorite area in the game just because of how grand and beautiful it feels (though I might be a bit biased because the music is also incredible here). The paper aesthetic has also never looked better. It's seriously just a gorgeous game.

Now let's talk story. The overall story is quite basic, though at least had a lot more depth than SS and CS. King Olly actually felt like a threat, and while is motivations were a bit... underwhelming, to say the least, I still think he was a somewhat interesting character. I think the more interesting part of the story was not Olly, but the dynamic between him and Olivia. She was genuinely terrified to confront her brother, but I think her character growth was nice to see.

Though the main story was simple, some of the sub-plots were definitely not. The obvious example is Bobby. I cried. Ahem... moving on , I also really loved the Green Streamer area, where all of Bowser's minions rallied with you to face a common threat. It made the battle against Olly's forces seem almost like a war that affected people outside of just Mario and the occasional Toad. Also, the chase sequence at the beginning of the final area was very epic and moving in my opinion. I also really love that the game got a little dark at times. The devs got away with a lot of creepy, grotesque stuff because of the paper aesthetic, like Scissors cutting up people's bodies and attaching their disembodied faces to a monster, or Peach's body literally being folded into King Olly's castle as a decoration.

Anyway uh this review probably won't convince anyone to buy the game because it has a few spoilers so I'm hiding it, but it's a really freaking good game. I kind of got a bit ranty but I just really enjoy talking about the game. I didn't give it a perfect score because there's still a part of me that wishes for the old RPG direction, but this is a darn good alternative if you ask me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario: The Origami King is a seriously great game. It blows both Color Splash and Sticker Star out of the water. Granted, I liked those games too, but this game is really good. Story is great, especially with deaths and sacrifices that make you realize how emotionally invested you are into it. Level design and the lack of a world map is great. Collectibles, treasures, etc., are a fun addition and add several hours of gameplay into it. Partners are another great addition from the original 3 games, while temporary, they add a layer of depth to the story and setting of Paper Mario and allow you to see there’s specific stories behind each character. Music is another great part of it, I never heard a song I didn’t like. As for the downsides, the battle system is not good. I did not like it. At first it was okay, but as the game went on I just ran. Same can be said for boss battles. They weren’t as bad, but still not great. And there’s no reason to fight. As the game goes on, you have upwards of 50k coins. I had around 65k at one point. The lack of any kind of EXP is disheartening, but the semi-reintroduction of Badges is a step in the right direction. The final boss fight didn’t feel like a boss fight, instead it was another puzzle. The lack of original characters, as well as distinguishing features for characters like age and gender, is another huge downfall to this game. Every character is a Toad, or a Goomba, or a Koopa. Some have different costumes. The Ancient Ones, and Captain T. Ode were the only semi-original characters that were interesting and had some kind of depth. Some nitpicks could be that Luigi doesn’t have as big of a role as i would have liked. Though that can be said for the original 2 and SS/CS as well. Overall, a great game that is dragged down by its battle system and lack of original characters, although still a lot of fun and honestly a heart-wrenching (and heartwarming) story at times. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm having a lot of trouble reviewing this game. I feel there are external and internal circumstances that seriously hinder my thoughts here.

On one hand, yes, I do desperately want a game similar to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I say this even though my most favourite Paper Mario game was Super Paper Mario; I just know a game like that can't really do so great anymore. Super Paper Mario was a daring risk that went right, but it shouldn't be risked again, unless you REALLY want to be bold, and maybe a bit stupid.

On the other hand, I've heard the interviews, I've seen the dialogue, and honestly, given the hindsight, I can't help but feel like there are some genuine cries for help throughout this game. The Bob-omb, "Bobby" as Olivia calls him, is an example. Olivia keeps trying to name him, but he adamantly refuses to be named; this, as well as a nod to Admiral Bobbery, among other references to their own past, tells me they really do want to make uniquely designed enemies/allies, but something's stopping them.

That being said, it's also very blatantly clear that this game could've been infinitely better. Take a look at Super Paper Mario. Everything in that game is unique, yet follows Nintendo's restrictions. There's scarcely a redesigned Koopa, Goomba, or Shy Guy in there, if at all. It's all unique characters/enemies that fall directly into the line of what's allowed still.

My thoughts on this game are that, with a bit of thinking outside of the box, it could've been infinitely more. Olivia and Olly's characters could've been deep. Olly's entire motive for genocide is as stupid as "My creator scribbled on me! For this, I must K I L L" and it turns out what he WROTE, not scribbled, was a heartfelt message. This could've been much more, and just felt incredibly lazy. Characters like Khap'taan Teeowed/Captain T. Ode, who felt super unique, were dumbed down so severely that you end up feeling averse to them by the end.

Everything in this game is a big "What could've been". That being said, it nailed lots of things on the head. The music and sound design is amazing. The level design is pretty great. The art style is superb, and visually, this game is a wonder; but none of these things feel so great because of how dull this game is. The soundtrack of this game is a soundtrack you'd find yourself humming, but thanks to how little of an impact the game actually left, the soundtrack, too, suffers. The visual design would've made unique characters so much more memorable, yet all I can remember is Olivia, Olly, and Captain T. Ode's fancy clothes, and that only a little; really, all I can remember is that it was black and red... I think.

The combat is an atrocity. If I were given the opportunity to lick wet paint for a "Skip Battle" button, I would do it in a heartbeat. It's fun for the first chapter AT MOST. Boss battles are also somewhat interesting, yet they, too, stop being that way after the second one.

I really hate that I spent 100$ for this game. If I knew this is what I would get, I wouldn't have bought it at all.

Why I'm so torn is because it's so clear it could've been better. From character motives, to combat systems, to, well, characters in general; they're all so visibly lacklustre, yet so clearly oozing with room for improvement, that it hurt to play the game. I played it and I saw what could've been, and I can't help but feel like there's just a reason behind it. Given the studio's complaints regarding the fact that they're not able to really be as creative as they wish, I can somewhat understand, but as I mentioned before, even with the restrictions on creativity that they're effected with, a game like Super Paper Mario could exist if made now. There's just not enough of an excuse, especially when The Origami King itself is full of potential for interesting characters, and, hell, even has characters like Olivia and Olly, which fall outside of this rule.

If the last two games weren't as bad as they were, I'd probably be much more lenient on the rating for this game, as I'd be thinking it's a one-off mistake in game creation. Would it be a big mistake? Yes, sure, but let's not stress over hypotheticals. The issue here is that there's not much good faith, so I find it hard to believe that the characters, or at the very least, the story, couldn't have been more interesting.

I mean... really? "He scribbled all over me, so I must commit genocide, without even thinking for a split second that, maybe, just maybe, the person who brought me to life didn't do so with bad intentions". That's the plot. What's the lesson here? Think first, act later? Mario games don't all have to be as mindless as "Your princess is in another castle". This is on that calibre, and I don't understand why. Not to say those games are bad, but it's more that they shouldn't even be compared. Making a story game story-less is like making a Mario game without jumping.

My rating of 4 is genuine.

The humor and writing is decent, the aesthetic is pretty good, colourful and engaging and the battles, while somewhat repetitive are actually ok. The main problem with the game is that it's just kind of boring and many parts - random challenges, non-logical puzzles - actually get quite grating after a while. This is a game that I enjoy less and less the more I play it.

    If you can get it

If you can get it for half price or borrow it from someone then it's probably worth it, however don't spend $60 on it like I did, it's not worth that.

Sério, que jogo repetitivo e sem graça, foi um dos piores ''Mario'' que eu já vi em toda a minha vida, o jogo é chato e não parece ter alma, realmente não recomendo.

The Origami King is a game greater than the sum of its parts. It reaffirms Nintendo’s status as king of innovation, even if the folds don’t quite align. [Issue #2, p.66]

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
