The characters are written very well and Rodgers deeper tone fits extremely well with the overall tone of the game. The Titan battles were the highlight of the game and this is a great step for Sonics future! Expand

I have not played a Sonic game in a while (since Sonic and the Black knight maybe).

So I bough this game with a lot of hype, and I was reallt amazed. Sure the RPG and fights are not perfect, but just running and discovering the world is super funny. Really recommand the game !

honestly such a good game. a great return to what sonic was originally supposed to be about, innovation and being an edgy competitor to the other more tame video game mascots like Mario. Frontiers throws so many different concepts/play styles at you and surprisingly more often than not, they work. The graphics are absolutely lacking but imo that is not what makes a game good. Game is a technical mess with unacceptable levels of pop-in. Story is uninspired and boring but fitting for a Sonic game. Gameplay is the only redeeming quality but it is still so flawed in many respects. Funnily enough this is by far the best 3D Sonic game but that speaks volumes about the Sonic franchise rather than this game itself.

Just an all around epic time with the blue blur! It’s a bit of a proof of concept and has some room to grow, but if you’ve at all been a fan of the series in 3D, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. The physics could be more satisfying, but it still allows you to pull off some impressive feats of speed in both the overworld and cyber space

It's not only the worst Sonic game ever made, making 06 **** blush with the lack of technical skill on display, but it's just one long fetch-quest. The open world was great to run around in and speedrunning some of the cyberspace levels, as buggy as they are, was a guilty pleasure of mine.

Go fish for 5 minutes and you’re good to go. The combat system is really well done and flashy and the boss battle are epic. Sonic controls can still be polished tough. I think, Sega is into something. If they want the next installment to be a masterpiece, here are the key part for me :
    -Give the game more budget
-Fix the technical issues -Upgrade the pacing of the story telling and the cinematics
-Don’t use the same mini game to reaver the map twice. Like in Mario 3D World, you won’t find the same gimmick twice. They should try to accomplish a similar thing.
    -Upgrade Sonic Controls
-Remove 2D courses -Change the theme of the courses. Explore something else.

The visuals are boring to look at. The colors are so desaturated, uninteresting to the eye, devoid of any artstyle that evokes "Sonic". Sonic's model pops out so badly in all of this because of its own saturated colors and lighting. The enemies are uninteresting geometric designs lacking any character, that look like they were pulled out from another kind of game.
Sonic Team learned nothing from Sonic '06's bland enemy designs.

A lot of the cutscenes feel like they were done in Source Film Maker lacking any proper framing, lighting, dynamic angles or emotion from the characters.
In-game when characters interact with each other, they barely move their limbs to express any kind of emotion or reaction. There's a handful cutscenes where this is not as much of an issue which shows cutscene animation was an afterthought for the most part.

The "open world" nature works for Sonic's high speed but the concept is not utilized well. Entire sections are blocked off with invisible walls, you cannot abuse momentum to go through sections in different ways as there really is not much of it and the level design is very uninteresting. Random floating rails, springs and platforms is something that gets repeated over and over in all of the island areas. Not only they look jarring but also serve as padding, as if you fail and fall down, you'll have to do it all over again. Complete with objects sometimes glitching and randomly popping in the view potentially obstructing your flow.

The game wants to feel that their combat system is clever but most of the time you can just get away with mashing random buttons and if that doesn't work, just draw a circle around an object with the Cyloop ability and see if that helps. Rinse and repeat.

The physics feel buggy, Sonic reacts to the smallest bump on the terrain and glitches around which makes it look so jarring. It feels even worse when he has to scale on moving objects such as the giant bosses. The physics for some reason feel a lot worse in the Cyberspace levels.

The puzzles feel like a very last minute addition and they break the game's pace. Easily the worst padding and section of the game. Sonic Team learned nothing about breaking the pace with Big's fishing back in Sonic Adventure. Speaking of fishing, the fishing minigame is very shallow, just requiring you to wait and press a button to win. It lacks any depth that other fishing minigames have, such as reel fighting with the fish and watching your line tension.

Sonic is the only person playable in this game. Again. For the longest time, Sonic Team refuses to let us play with any of the other characters. If anything they could have had Knuckles accompany Sonic and handle all of the combat and climbing. Better yet, this should have been a Knuckles game, the entirety of the story feels more personal to Knuckles if anything.

Story was okay for what it was trying to do, but some moments felt forced and some other moments had buildup but did not go anywhere in the end.

The music feels very melancholic and generic all the time, the Cyberspace tracks are the best and these levels do not last long but are the best tracks that remind you of Sonic's peppy character.
The sound effects sometimes feel that they don't fit with the context, like the Sonic Adventure woosh sfx used for an enemy's short dash move.

The voice acting feels very forced and weird, the characters' voices sound like nothing we ever heard from this series. Sometimes they sound too serious to the point I can hear their normal talking voice surface.

Sonic Team needs to allocate time to actually create a GAME and not an engine + a tech demo packaging it as a complete $60 game. They wasted time creating an engine with Forces and they did it again with Frontiers and barely had any time left to flesh out meaningful game mechanics to go with it.

Repetitive gameplay, boring story, not enough playable characters.
I wish for the next Sonic game to at least try to explain all the conveniently placed platforms that are there for Sonic to utilize in every stage, and to add more playable characters other than Sonic, kind of like Sonic Heroes, but minus the mandatory group selection. They should also have their own stages and collectibles

I wish for the next Sonic game to at least try to explain all the conveniently placed platforms that are there for Sonic to utilize in every stage, and to add more playable characters other than Sonic, kind of like Sonic Heroes, but minus the mandatory group selection. They should also have their own stages and collectibles along with new special mechanics for each characters. Is that too much to ask from a company as big as Sega? Surely funding a massive scale Sonic game like the one I described is not beyond their budget.
In my opinion, it would make for a more immersive experience overall. Details like that go a long way.

I love this game. The story is great and back to being serious. I love Eggman’s father-like relationship with Sage. You really see it in the Egg-Memos. There are references everywhere and it’s clear that a lot of love went into the story. It’s not just fan service though, characters seem to be developing and a bigger narrative is forming in the Sonic games.

The open zone gameplay is great. I think it was the most fun and I wasn’t expecting it to be as fun as it was. I loved exploring and I’ve sucked a lot of time into just running around.

The titan fights are incredible. They really make you feel invincible. That’s how super sonic should feel.

The music is really good. The swelling music of the islands, the lo-fi when fishing with Big, the house and edm of cyberspace, the heavy metal when going super: it all sounds great and somehow sounds like Sonic. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss Crush 40 though. Love those guys.

Cyberspace was where I can’t give Sonic Frontiers a 10. It’s a great idea and I want the boost era level design to stay in the games. But there are a few problems with it. Cyberspace levels meld together. It’s hard to remember individual levels because there are only four backgrounds. Also, Cyberspace physics are rough. It’s really difficult to turn sonic when boosting or if he’s in the air. It doesn’t feel as easy to control as unleashed or generations. Also, jumping causes you to completely lose your momentum. Next, I really like the impact of the homing attack, but I think it should allow you to cancel out of the recovery animation to more quickly stomp or chain homing attacks. Lastly, something feels very wrong with the 2D cyberspace levels. Sonic feels extremely slow. Even boosting feels like it’s doing nothing. At the end of the day though I still really enjoyed the cyberspace levels. Their inclusion is certainly very welcomed.

Sonic Frontiers is well worth your money and time. I think this is a must play for any sonic fan. For anyone new to the franchise or on and off with the franchise, try this game out. I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Overall this is the best Sonic game we’ve gotten in a decade! The gameplay is genuinely fun, the story is good but flawed, the landscapes look beautiful, and the characters are written very well! There are some annoying bugs and annoying pop ins, and the ending feels rushed. But overall I loved this game!

Now that I'm almost finished with it, I wanted to give my honest, long-winded opinion on this game as a long time Sonic fan who doesn't feel shy being critical of the franchise. This game is incredibly flawed with a lot of problems. However, I had a great time with it and will definitely be playing more of it even after I've finished.

The pop-in is bad. To the point where it actually affects how you play. You can't really figure out where you can go sometimes because the assets aren't loaded, so you have to be within several feet of the path so it can actually become visible, which isn't good for a game where you go blisteringly fast and those assets essentially materialize right in front of you.

Cyberspace is hit or miss and incredibly inconsistent. Some levels I genuinely love and are up there with some of my favorite Sonic levels, and some of them I wouldn't make my worst enemy play. Some levels control pretty well and make speedrunning them very satisfying, while others have terrible controls and I get a headache just trying to get a D rank so I can move on. This inconsistency runs for both the 3D and 2D levels, so you never really know if the level you unlock is going to be innately frustrating or surprisingly fun until you're playing it.

Combat is decent. All style with little substance, but as a filthy casual, I kinda like that. It feels like it's more or less a foundational mechanic that'll be improved upon in a later title. For now, it's a flashy button-masher that's main intention is to make you feel powerful. The boss fights are actually one of the biggest highlights in the game, something that was always an afterthought in previous Sonic titles. Many of the lower level bosses completely outpace even previous final bosses from older games. The boss fights are only brought to greater heights with its OST, which is fantastic in every part of this game.

The open-zone is surprisingly fun, I think it's the highlight of the game. It's THE thing the game was built upon and I think it's executed well despite the pop-in issue. However, I would've loved some extra side missions that really take advantage of the playground that can be so enjoyable to run around in. The puzzles and the activities given by Sonic's friends are fun, but I think there could've been more.

Story is pretty good. You're not getting a dark gritty drama with Sonic, but this isn't an incredibly patronizing Saturday morning cartoon like the recent entries have been. The team did a pretty good job with the story trying to balance seriousness with some lighthearted elements. And Ian Flynn does a great job at writing dialogue that develops these characters as opposed to white noise emitting from Sonic and friends. It feels like a nice restart to the unbearable writing of the last few years.

I've been going on for too long. While I have my issues with the game, I can't seem to put it down. The combat is shallow yet satisfying with invigorating boss fights, Cyberspace can frustrate me but can be way too much fun when designed right, pop-in is bad but I love exploring the open-zones and discovering new paths. I haven't played a Sonic title this enjoyable since Generations, so I can excuse the issues, especially with how small the team was on this project.

It gets an 8 in my book because to me, it shot for the stars and very messily crash lands on the moon. It ain't pristine, but it works and it does something the franchise hasn't done in over 10 years: Try. It tries on all fronts and it's incredibly admirable. Sure it falls flat in places, but when it works it's the most fun I've had in a Sonic game. Even though I'm hoping for improvements through updates, it's still super fun and I'm genuinely excited for what Sonic Team does next if they maintain this drive with either a sequel or a similar follow up. For newcomers to Sonic, give it a try, you might like it. For fans, this is a must-have.

To Sonic Team and Sega: Please keep this commitment to the franchise. When you give it your all you create something really special. Care and effort are all the fans ask for. Please keep up the good work.

Cyberspace had a lot of reused stages but if you learn the controls you can have a good time with them (not as good as unleashed or generations but not as bad as forces). However, for the first time since 2011, a mainline Sonic Team project is strong at its core. The open world is a joy to run through and, though it isn't especially dense, the speed of the character means it's hardly an issue when quickly moving from one thing to the next. The tasks on the map are brief, and it's a breeze going through and completing everything. All the boss fights (except for that last one) are very engaging, with fantastic music to boot. The whole game has fantastic music, separated into three different basic track types which are all performed great. The cyberspace stages are a valuable addition to the game and the overall gameplay loop is engaging.

The game is no masterpiece. But for the first time in a decade, Sonic games have a good foundation to work with. Let's just hope the studio don't throw it away.

But if giving this game anything above a 7.0 somehow makes me a 'Sonic Stan', then the Hokey-Pokey's a fun game to play, too.

I will admit Frontier's flaws, the open-world aspect not being one of them. There are much bigger outliers here, like the Wyvern boss fight at the end of Ares Island (Island #2) and how that somehow seems to avoid all of the development lessons Masahiro Sakurai has been pointing out for the better part of two months. There are smaller things, like not being able to see your map whenever you are in the vicinity of an enemy, or the bizarre Sonic R-style drifting mechanic in level 3-5.

In the end, however, I'm a videogame apologist (Maybe even a bad game denier. I'm still figuring that one out), but I liken 'Frontiers' to the first Assassin's Creed - Almost-prototypical in its design, with amazing opportunity to become much, much better. I will continue to follow this.

The Eels have a song called 'Beautiful Freak'. 'Frontiers' is not like the other Sonic games...; Maybe that's why I love it. When the only other game you've played to completion this year was Eiyuden Chronicle: Uprising, punching 60+ hours into a Sonic game has gotta mean it somehow kept your attention, and that it can't be the absolute unplayable mess the 0s say it is.

This is just my futile attempt at offering a more rational perspective. Make of it as you will.

The game suffers from pacing issues, the game raises the bar on so many levels, but then kind of drops it at the end with the true final boss, I think everyone expected a new Sonic form for an ambitious game like this, but no one would have minded that if it wasn't this anticlimactic, loved the characterization Sonic and friends here, this is the best voice cast for the franchise, and everyone delivers, the story is fun, it was fun seeing the Eggman/Sage wholesome moments.
This game looks amazing visually, the work on Sonic Team's proprietary Hedgehog Engine 2 is apparent, the pop-in has been addressed by everyone so I won't go into it.
Cyber Space physics need tweaking, it needs the "give me knobs to control Sonic" treatment like in the open-zone, the different in physics is apparent and it's a major downgrade.
After finishing Sonic Frontiers, I'm giving it 8/10, this is a very ambitious title for Sonic, and I do hope Sega keeps being this ambitious with their mascot, this game screams passion when playing it, unlike Sonic Team's recent outings.

A surprisingly good attempt at putting the fastest thing alive in an open world, better story than most Sonic games, taking a more serious tone yet still showing more character to Sonic and his friends than they have had for a long time, graphics are great yet are sometimes broken by pop in, which you can get used to eventually. Music is very resemblant to that of Metal Gear Rising, very well made. While the main theme may get old, the boss themes are amazing. With bosses scattered all across the vast world, your experience is always filled with excitement. Not to mention the vast majority of mini-games which never make you feel like there is nothing to do. This game makes the old Sonic games merely mini-games with the Cyberspace levels. With boost stages that definitely impact the game in a positive manner, taking the gameplay straight out of Colors and Generations and putting it into the Cyberspace stages. Overall, this game has its flaws, yet is still an amazing experience for all types of gamers. Expand

A real glow up from previous entries in the Sonic series. Some of the best dialog in a Sonic game ever. Shame it got review bombed by a streamer that didn't realize that their influence has consequences to them (or maybe he did and he's just feigning ignorance). Give the game a chance if you haven't yet.

Also true final boss might feel anticlimatic.

it can be repetitive at times but still fun, veteran fans will definitely enjoy it more than new ones

Les musiques sont incroyables, les combats contre les titans sont incroyables, les animations... Peut faire mieux. J'adore ce jeu et il fais parti de mon top 5 de mes jeux préfèré.

ok enough praise let's get to my nitpicks

-combat is kinda bare-bones; needs more moves tbh
-the open world level design is aesthetically ass I'm sorry like why tf are there floating platforms in a basically desolate landscape??? In future games, level design should try to blend in with the environment
-you guys flopped the last two islands, should've just combined them with Kronos and made chaos the last island...
    -POP IN......... LMFAOOOOOOO

Despite these nitpicks, i still very much love this game, from my experience i would rate it 9 but objectively speaking, it's an 8.

those boss fights tho holy **** RAIDEN IS THAT YOU

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
