The game was great but I do have some issues the pop in of the rails and platforms really breaks my immersion also I don't think the graphics live up to next gen but also theirs a switch port. The cutsenes kind of disappointed me but glad to see the blue blur's games stepping and getting new footing

Overhyped. Games doesn't deserve more than a 6/10. It's maybe a good step forward, but it's not enough. Feels like they didn't finish the game and just released it for the 'November Tuesday'. They didn't even marketed it right, so nobody even notice that it was on Tuesday, so what's the point?

They could do so much better. They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but

They could do so much better.

They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but if you compere this two, Frontiers is soooo bad.
Like all the stage has the same old design, and that fine for some levels, but not ALL OF THEM. Not even single one new design. When in SA every lvl was different. In SA it was interesting to replay the stages, and you could play some new missions after completing the game. Here almost all stages you could beet at 100% from the first try.
But if you read about first open-world Sonic game, and decided not to finish some island at 100% you couldn't come back later, cuz it's not open-world. And after game is finished, that's it. You can only start a new game.

And the whole thing with collect memories is super boring. They could do them like 10-20 instead of 100, just hide them and make interesting to look for. Like give us the real memories of characters, instead of just some figures.
And why the only two female characters both have Hearts as they memories figures, while Tails and Knuckles have unique ones? Probably cuz they stop working on the game after 3 island. Or mb they are just sexists and didn't come up with something interesting for girls but hearts. Idk.

They should did Amy, Knuckles and Tails playable from the start, to show us what happening to them. And the fishing part looking so stupid.... I loved playing as Big in SA, but here it looks ridiculous. But i should agree, it's useful, cuz at the last island you would be soo bored of the game, and you wont wanna look for the memories for the 4 time, so catch some fish and trade for the memories instead is sooo good to finish earlier.

And some Koko instead of Chao? Really? Nah, chao deserve something better than this game anyway.
I could say so much more, but im just pissed that game has 8 score and someone even voting for the game of the year. It would be so lame if developers would see that people liked it and will continued to make games like this.

The characters are done at its best, as they really feel true to their character, no character ever feels ruined in the slightest. The open world itself was a good idea, and was fun at first, but it became a chore after the first world which slowly became annoying to get around, especially the second world for me. The second world and after was really annoying to get around and I wanted to rip off my hair, and the physics, movement, the camera were all annoying to deal with. The things in the open world itself like the challenges were easy, the same, and just boring. Collecting the Koco in the open world was cool, but it was annoying to try and find them since they are extremely small. Trying to avoid the enemies you don't want to fight was annoying because sometimes the camera would focus on them, when you don't want to fight them and want to focus on getting to your destination. The Cyber stages were the worst part of the game for me. The levels are the same thing we've seen over and over again and would've been better if we've gotten other levels that isn't Green Hill and Chemical Plant over and over again, and the level designs aren't that original either as they are bits and pieces of other Sonic levels. Sonic Frontiers overall is good experience to sit through but is far from perfect. Expand

My only complaint is the visuals which are incredibly lacking.. this feels like it needed a bit more time in the oven. Character models are too simplistic, environments although fun to navigate have extreme pop in, textures are high quality but the geometry and population of foliage is simplistic. Rain which is what you'll first experience in the game looks god awful, it looks like they overlayed animated noise over top of the image. However despite all these visual gripes the gameplay saves it completely, the sonic stages are exremely fast and short which makes you comfortable with restarting from the beginning to get a better time score. solving all the sometimes simplistic sometimes challenging puzzles around the world and climbing to great heights is thrilling and addictive.

I really really hope you don't miss out on this game like i almost did. I'm an old man now but i remember the days of sonic goofily saving the day from dr eggman in sonic adventure 1 and 2, this feels like that game all grown up.

Great game though with its flaws. Pop ins are my massive issues - along side some cutscenes looking lifeless. Also the final boss is anticlimactic imo. However, the game plays fun, and that is all that matters. The story is captivating and better than anything in recent games. Overall, would give this game a play, but perhaps wait until it’s on sale first.

Perhaps I'm playing a different Sonic Frontiers compared to all the sonic fanbois, bots and fake review accounts artificially boosting the score, because this game isn't that good at all, sure the graphics and soundtrack are pretty good but what do you expect from a current gen console like the PS5? As for the game, it had promise but falls flat pretty quickly with graphical glitches all over the place, the camera is terrible often the biggest source of frustration, it basically can't keep it sometimes, occasionally will change position on you confusing the player which leads to more frustration and generally is very bad for the game.

The gameplay on some levels is so fast that it becomes actually frustrating as the the elements are clearly designed for twitch reflexes otherwise you can fail very easily, sometimes you can fail on some cyberspace levels due to bugs and glitches too, trying to get that perfect S-Rank run and have one minor thing slow you up gets old fast, would have actually been better to slow the speed down a bit to give the player some extra breathing room when making near pixel perfect jumps from rails to rails or trying to perfectly time a jump and miss.

The game itself isn't a true open world game, its based around fairly large and somewhat linear islands in which you can do certain things in what order you want, but you are still required to complete highly linear typical 'cybserspace' sonic levels which are not too bad, except the control system makes it much harder than it needs to be, instead of sticking with standard move sets it opts for more moves than a street fighter character and gets progressively more annoying later.

The open world part is exactly what you expect, an open barren world with basically theme park rails, jumppads and everything associated with Sonic all over the place, it looks fairly stupid if I'm being honest because its basically everywhere, that increases with tricky perfect jumps needed as you progress.

Sound and music are excellent though, typical levels have some unique music tracks with some that are definitely banging, voice acting is also on par it's just a shame that the rest of the game doesn't live up to expectations.

Finally, Sonic Frontiers is a prime example of the Sega and Sonic fans rushing in to defend their champion from a lackluster game, the same way Zelda or Mario fans do the same. Sonic Frontiers is merely an average game that could have been much better but suffers from a myriad of issues which severely affect the fun factor and cause unnecessary frustration for the player, there is no excuse for shoddy camera angles or it failing to keep up with your character, especially in 3D platformers where you need to be able to see clearly where you are jumping, and/or a camera that keeps up with your character.

However, the cyberspace stages are not very fun at all even though I enjoyed the clear nods to stages from other games. There just seems to be a little something missing, making the world and the game itself have some emptiness even though there's plenty to do. I wish there were more meaningful moments in the world other than Sonic's occasional comment, like Sonic Adventure where you could carry around keys or take minecarts or ride on cars, stuff like that made the world fun and memorable to explore. The puzzles in Sonic Frontiers are fun to hunt down and do but I wouldn't say they're particularly memorable or anything like that. But this game made me extremely optimistic for the future and I really loved the story and the music. The characters felt more like themselves than they have in a while and I'm curious to see how they'll grow from their conversations in Sonic Frontiers. The boss music is always hype and there were some cyberspace stages that were worth playing a few times just so I could jam out. And I know I'm in the minority here but I actually really liked the final hardmode boss LOL I thought it was a lot of fun even though it was kinda out of left field. Looking forward to some performance patches in the near future so I can get started on my replay :) Expand

Let's start withe the good. Sonic Frontiers is Sonic at his highest form we have seen in some time. The speed can really be felt, even though the world is huge. In fact, that is an advantage because it gives Sonic more freedom to run around then he has ever seen. I'm kind of mixed on the boss fights, but they are fun and engaging. Just not sure that it belongs in a Sonic game. SomeoneLet's start withe the good. Someone played too much Shadow of the Colossus.

On the bad, let's start with the technical:
*Pop-in for days, they didn't even try to hide with some cyberspace transition or dithering, just complete parts of the level appearing out of nowhere.
*Crashes, this seems unique to the PS5 platform, but nonetheless this game is very poorly optimized for the PS5; and I recommend playing it on Xbox or PC if you can. None of the platform features are on display, no VRR, no 3D sounds, no improved haptics.
*Flying through the map. In my playthrough I got yeeted through the map on multiple occasions, and it seems like there are some substantial collision bugs set throughout the open world.

    Non-Technical:
*The open world enemies are more annoying than actual fun encounters, you will quickly learn to just run past them unless you need some collectible they hold.
*While I appreciate the attempt at a story, that's all it is, an attempt. A shot and a miss. They really don't even want to tell you what is going on for *most* of this game, with cryptic cutscenes that expose nothing of the situation. It's "your princess is in another castle" on overdrive. People are comparing this to SA2 and I hate them for it. This is nothing even remotely close to SA2. The cutscenes border on SA1 laughable.
*The camera is once again the final boss of a Sonic game. They have this really horrid idea to "lock" the camera in certain situations (read: a lot), and it jerks the perspective away from the player just because you ran past a certain enemy in the open world. Even in the traditional Sonic levels (called CyberSpace Levels here), you have to run the track once just to see which direction the camera is going to lock in and play against it. It keeps you from freely looking around and exploring the levels other than the golden path, and a couple alternates (left of right, or top and bottom).

The game overall feels incomplete, like they were just throwing ideas at the wall to try to make a game out of. From jump rope, to pinball, to really weird puzzles that don't fit with Sonic at all. Half the time I couldn't even find the motivation to continue playing, because the story certainly isn't compelling. I can't find myself to rate this negatively, but it's just a mediocre game. One day I dream we will get a Sonic game that rises to the fit and finish of Mario. Today ain't that day.

I had a LOT of reservations about this game going in, I thought it was going to be a complete and total train-wreck, my expectations were at absolute zero.

So... I can't say how incredibly pleased I am to come to Metacritic for the first time in a long time to whole-heartedly recommend a game. It was far, far from perfect but it blows the last 20 years of Sonic games out of the water.

The open-world exploration translated fantastically, the score and original songs were on par with some of the series' best and the story was a lot of fun. Some of the references to past events felt a little forced, but at the same time it's a nice acknowledgement that Sonic Team seems to want to actually have some character development and depth going forward with the series.

The "portal" levels were a bit hit or miss, I wish there had been more themes and styles used but for the most part it all flowed very well. I enjoyed how they expanded Sonic's combat repertoire and allowed you to pick between auto-chaining attacks or manual execution.

The only major thing that left a bad taste in my mouth is the mis-mashing of art styles, with some of the early areas looking like they're from a tech demo and the rest being too realistic to fit into the Sonic universe. It's especially comical in the fishing mini-game. It wasn't enough to spoil the experience, but it was a very odd choice none the less.

I hope Sonic Team learns from and builds on this formula in the future rather than just doing their normal thing and abandoning it all and trying something totally different.

The structure works really well that I can't really describe it properly. If you are a fan of collectathons then you will love this. For the story, you collect memory tokons in order to talk to the character who is trapped within cyberspace on each island. The dialogue has gotta be the best in the series since Black Knight and I enjoyed the call backs to previous games in order to feel like everything is connected and takes place within Sonic's world. The boss fights with Super Sonic also one of the best, if not, the best boss fights in the franchise. Being able to use the combat for Super Sonic while fighting these Evangelion type mechs with metalcore music playing sounds so good man. Another thing I forgot to mention is the cyberspace levels. When I first played them, I thought they were alright but as time went on, I really like them. The controls are solid, music banging, and the tech like magnet dashing makes these levels amazing to speedrun and to beat your time in. Gotta say the biggest highlight of this game gotta be its music. Top 5 Sonic soundtrack in my book. I love everything from the somber, melancholic tone of the open zone music, to the EDM of cyberspace, to the metalcore of the titan boss fights, and to the orchestra of BGM when watching cutscenes. I could go on for hours on why I love this game but I do have some gripes like the pop in, Sonic feels like he's glued to the terrian (power boost skips using tricks makes up for it alongside rail jumping), Technical issues alongside a little jank but it won't affect the gameplay that much if at all, and the true final boss being a little underwhelming (even tho I still enjoyed it) Overall this game is definetly worth picking up. It's even on sale the time I am typing this so pick it up. Score: 8.5/10 but I'll give it a 9 since metacritic doesn't do decimals. Expand

This game tries alot of new things for the Sonic franchies and hits it out of the park on most. The story is more grounded, the music as always is excellent, and the gameplay is new and refreshing. However there are some issues with janky controls from time to time but the game flows very smoothly most of the time.

I have a lot of nitpicks and complaints but the game is still incredibly fun. Sonic feels great to control, the islands (for the most part) are a blast to explore, and the dialogue is a huge step up from previous games. Overall it's a good first step in a new direction, and just a fun time in general, but they need to improve upon it heavily to keep fans interested, Make the next game a lot more difficult, make it more consistently fun, make the story more engaging, and give us more post game content after completing the main campaign. TL;DR My mind says 7 but my heart says 9.

I'm in my 30's. Huge 2D fan on the Genesis. Have not liked a 3D Sonic since 1998's Sonic Adventure. Yes, that's right. I found the sequel disappointing. I found Sonic Generations passable. And we all know the issues with most of the others... So I should dislike this, right? Maybe barely stand it? Exact opposite. I couldn't put it down.

So I should dislike this, right? Maybe barely stand it?

Exact opposite. I couldn't put it down.

Yeah, it's technically a little janky. 2D cyberspace is awful (3D levels are fun though). Pop-in is constant.

But man, it's just fun. Blasting through aerial jungle gyms. Curveball minigames. Button mashing combat. Wicked boss battles. A weirdly calming fishing game. Something about all this thing just satisfies the ADHD child inside me. I've played with a face hurting smile for 4-6 hour sessions the last few days. I was warned that after the second or third island things showed their tedium, but I never felt that. In fact, the last island was the only one I bothered to 100% (80% most others) because it was such a blast.

The technical issues tell me it's a 7. But it's been forever since I just had this much fun for 20+ hours. Outside of some awful 2D cyberspace levels (seriously, the control is horrid for these), I enjoyed everything about this game on a solid 9 level.

So I arrive at 8/10. I think it's fair. Now excuse me, I'm going to make a second run at this thing.

It isn't perfect and has its flaws, but it objectively is a very good game. Don't listen to the negative reviews from no-name gaming sites and Youtubers and their little fan boys who have no idea what they are talking about, the consensus among most critics and users is that this is a very good Sonic game, as it should be. It is easily the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations.

    Pros:
    1. Very snappy/responsive controls, even when Sonic is going fast. It is clear that Sonic Team has put in the work to fine tune the controls for 3D Sonic.

    2. The 60 fps frame-rate is buttery smooth and load times are extremely fast for the PS5.

    3. The story is probably the best Sonic game story since Sonic Adventure 2. Don't expect Mass Effect level storytelling, but for a Sonic game is surprisingly good.

    4. The fun factor for this game is off the charts. It is so much fun blasting around at top speeds and chaining together movement across springs, rails, boosters, etc. Since I have got Sonic to Level 99 speed, I have spent a ton of time just blasting around the open environments. I can't think of another open world (open zone) game that allows you to blaze through environments at speeds like this.

    5. I really enjoyed the sprinkling in of 2D sections, both in the open world and the Cyberspace levels. It gave a nostalgic feel to Sonic hearkening back to the classic 2D era. Also, platforming in 2D is different than platforming in 3D so it helped add variety that way. I genuinely don't understand the criticism of the 2D sections in this game, they were a lot of fun.

    6. Speaking of Cyberspace stages, they were a great add-on to the game and helped add variety to the game outside of the open zone gameplay. Sonic Team should absolutely keep these types of levels in their future "open zone" Sonic games.

    7. The graphics are very good, not Horizon Zero Dawn level, but it looked great running through these environments. I also appreciated the addition of what I'd call "mini-biomes" within each open zone. Without giving too much away, you will find oasis, wetlands, waterfalls, lakes, forests, fields of flowers, etc. sprinkled throughout these open zones. I hope Sonic Team continues add these types of mini-biomes within their open worlds in future games.

    8. I thought the RPG elements were excellent, and the way they are utilized it encouraged you to explore the open zones to obtain Koko and other power-ups to increase Sonic's speed, attack, defense and max ring count. I found myself searching around every nook and cranny in the open world to find Koko so I could max out Sonic's speed. The way they meshed together the RPG elements and exploration of the open zone is great, and I hope they continue to do that.

    9. The combat is pretty fun. I enjoyed the added move-sets and combos that Sonic can utilize to bash apart enemies and bosses. It isn't particularly challenging, even on Hard mode, but this is a Sonic game, not Dark Souls. The focus is on speed and fun, not chucking your controller into the TV because a particular boss pummeled you into the dirt for a 20th straight time.

    10. The fishing mini-game was a lot of fun, and with the Cyberspace stages was a nice way to add variety to the game. The addition of a Fishopedia and Eggman tapes was great too. In the future, it would be nice to see the fishing mini-game have its own biome. How about a fishing zone in Aquatic Ruin Zone from Sonic 2 (Sega Genesis).

    Cons:
    1. Some of the mini-bosses and Titan bosses can be a bit tedious, especially with the controls, but luckily this is more of a minor nuisance and isn't game breaking.

    2. On some minor occasions, Sonic's controls won't necessarily respond. Such as when boosting Sonic comes to a instant stop even though there is no object in his way, or you hit a wall for a wall jump but Sonic just falls off for no reason. Again, minor nuisances that don't occur often and not game breaking.

    3. No Photo Mode. My God, these types of Sonic games need a photo mode. A nice added feature of a photo mode too would be the option to remove the rails, springs, and other artificial objects so you can get a nice scenic photo/screenshot without the clutter.

    4. This is subjective, but I didn't enjoy the blocky cyberspace background in the Cyberspace Stages. Part of the fun of Sonic games is speeding through environments with the natural scenery in the background. I know there is a story element to why it is there, but Sonic Team needs to take these types of backgrounds and nuke it to the moon. It detracts away from the experience.

    5. Stop reusing Green Hill and Sky Sanctuary for the billionth time. Don't get me wrong, I love the hearkening back to classic Sonic levels, but there are so many out there to bring into the modern era. How about reviving Emerald Hill, Aquatic Ruin,Starlight Zone, Mystic Cave, etc.

Only gave it a 9, though, due to minor grievances such as Cyberspace levels not being too great for the most part, and cause of an upgrade system that for whatever reason has 2 skill upgrades be instantaneous with multiple level raises at a time and the other 2 being done one level at a time. Otherwise, this is arguably the best 3D Sonic game of all time. Yes, even better than Generations.

The main “Open-Zone” majority of the game is immensely enjoyable, even for a franchise that only had small pieces of it hinted in past 3D Sonic games (Adventure, 06, & Unleashed). The Cyberspace levels are basically Forces, but with improved controls and a lot of great platforming in the levels themselves. Boss fights are the best that they’ve ever been before in a Sonic game with incredibly designed combat that takes cues from other melee, hack and slash games—not to mention the heart-pumping music that play as each one’s theme. For example: “CAUSE I AM UNDEFEATABLE!”. Not a fan of Ian Flynn's take on the characters (again its a step up since unleashed, but the characters still don't act like how they used to pre colors), and I don't like how he tries to make everything canon to the games (Sticks from boom spin off is mentioned as well as his own character tangle from comics which is so cringe). Expand

The best Sonic game in a decade. Fun open zone gameplay always keeps you engaged. While the game has some issues in the bosses, the last act looking the same as Kronos, and mediocre cyberspace it is still a very fun time.

I was really looking forward to playing this game prior to its release, and my excitement only increased after I began playing. I wish the game could have been more challenging. Even on Hard mode, the majority of the game outside of some Challenges is fairly easy. That being said, the game makes for a relaxing experience at times with its progression. The combat really brings a lot of energy to the game, however, especially in boss fights. The music throughout the game is excellent at setting the tone as well. The narrative is something I really enjoyed personally. There were many heartwarming character interactions, and the references in the writing really show an attention to detail that is rarely seen in the games.
I am very much looking forward to Sonic Team's next project.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion sonic team hasn't made a good game since 2011, sonic lost world and forces were terrible games with absolutely atrocious writing. While sonic frontiers isn’t perfect it definitely deliverers. Ian Flynn wrote for this game, if you don’t know who he is he is someone on the team for the currently running idw comics. You can definitely tell Ian Flynn actually knows these characters, sonic doesn’t just tell a pun every second and actually feels like himself, same thing with the other characters. While the story could be better it is definitely good. As for the gameplay that also delivers…well mostly. The huge amount of grind rails and bounce pads can be fun they sometimes feel annoying as they’re ALL OVER THE PLACE and can feel overused. The enemies and combat is really fun, sonics skill tree is excellent but feels a bit too easy to get the moves but it’s not too bothersome. The first 2 islands are pretty great, however number 3 has a lot of 2d sections and it feels unneeded, the 4th Island doesn’t even exist it’s just for the story, and the 5th island is just the other half of the 1st but it can still be enjoyable. The titans are all great.. but except for the last it was way too easy and didn’t feel like a final boss. The games soundtrack is superb especially Kellin Quinn’s songs. So should you buy this game? Well if you like what you see, yes!!! Expand

This was honestly very fun. The Open zone gameplay was actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be and the combat was pretty nice. Sonic Frontiers have the best movement of a 3D Sonic. I felt sometimes that the "momentum" wasn't that good, like, jumping in the middle of the boost can stop all the speed gained. But besides of that, the Drop Dash is quite ignored and it's the best movement of the game. Sonic doesn't look that good in the open zones, but the movement it's well done in every scenario.

But besides of that, the Drop Dash is quite ignored and it's the best movement of the game. Sonic doesn't look that good in the open zones, but the movement it's well done in every scenario.
The "Open Zone" in every island is good, but not perfect. The first island is the best made 'cause you can go anywhere you want, learning everything until you're ready to do something in an specefic zone. Yeah, they do something weird to stop you to reach the boss battle, but they hide half of it well. In the other islands... Nope. They use invisible walls to stop you from progressing in the island and it doesn't look good at all. Though, reaching the boss battles keeps being hidden well. Except the fourth boss battle.
The battle moveset is cool and easy to do. They look so good in Sonic. Some of them are broken, specially the "Sonic Boom." The "Parry" is more like a "Block" 'cause you can hold it all the time you want. That even can make Sonic fly while using it in the air.
The Cyber Space gameplay is weird, even bad in some levels. Like, the Sonic gameplay in this game wasn't made for most of them. And that's obviously for using past levels from past games. Though, the challenges made them more enjoyable and they're not that necessary to be played 'cause you can obtain kays from defeating enemies. It's tedious, but at least it's an option.
The enemies are fun to defeat when you can use more movesets than pressing the same button all the time. Some of the Guardians are weird, but they're creative to defeat.
The soundtrack is nice. They would be more memorable in any other Sonic game, but in this game they're quite forgottable in comparison of the songs used in every boss that are AMAZING. The music and the bosses.
Talking of the bosses. THEY'RE THE BEST PART OF THE GAME SO FAR. WHY DIDN'T THEY PUT A BOSS RUSH??? They're also the best Super Sonic fights in any other game. Super Sonic is just so well made that I still can't believe it. The gameplay of Super Sonic is like a "God Mode" but with the classic limitations.
Tbh, I think the worst thing in this game is the pop-in. And the end of this game. Yep. The first three islands are amazing and all, but the last two islands are mid and bad. The fourth boss battle is a copypaste of the first one but worst. The way how the solved the "corruption" thing was boring and The End, literally, is a very bad final boss and a mid ending.
The story is good, the charactization is very good but their potential is not used at the end. It seems that the potential established in the story, character development and so on was relegated to a promise, the promise that it will be exploited in a future game.
For this inconsistency, I think that it deserves a 7.5, 'cause even if the end of the game is bad, most of the game was almost the best in any Sonic game.

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
