Poorly designed boring empty wasteland. SEGA should stop trying to make 3D sonic games and stick to the 2D gems such as sonic mania.

So, uh... this game is Amazin'?

I did not expect to love this as much as I did, and this is comin' from someone that Loved Sonic Forces!
But this game is just on another level!
Everythin', the Story, the OST, the Cutscenes, the Gameplay, The Bosses... there wasn't a single thing I disliked 'bout this one, and I'm still in awe on how much this made me feel good!

The story, music, gameplay is all great. Especially the music, and the boss fights, like wow. Sonic feels fantastic to control in this open world, and the combat, while not on DMC or Bayonettas level, is so fun. Hopefully they expand on it and make more in depth. Welp, that's pretty much all I gotta say on it. Lol Good game, play it. Even if you ain't a Sonic fan I reccomend it just from how fun it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An incredibly fun and somewhat surprising hard game, the open zone gameplay is fun and rewarding with the collectibles and challenges, the combat is incredibly fun with all the combos you can pull off, the titan bosses are extremely exiting and provide a good challenge, the fishing spots are an excellent way to obtain items necessary to progress the story without needing to seek and find them in the open zone not to mention the egg memos which provide backstory to the games plot, but the game is incredibly flawed, first of all the cyberspace levels drag the game down with its broken physics and it’s repetitive 4 level themes, leveling up speed and ring capacity are tedious since the game forces you to upgrade them one at a time, the final boss is a huge letdown when it’s just a harder and longer version of the hacking mini game from earlier, it’s a even bigger letdown considering how good and exiting the other boss battles from the first 3 islands were. The game lacks post game content and replay value, a new game plus which lets you play the game with every ability unlocked from the start could’ve extended the playtime easily. There’s no real incentive to go the extra mile and collect every memory token or do every cyberspace challenge since you don’t even get a trophy and tokens & keys are obtainable in the fishing spots so you don’t even have to do a majority of them. Sonic Frontiers is an incredibly fun game but has tons of flaws that need to be addressed if they ever plan to do a follow up/sequel Expand

Sonic Frontiers is an amazing video game with some sad flaws like noticable Pop-in and the missed opportunity to add additional playable characters like Knuckles, Amy, and Cream, although mentioned or in the game still not playable. The 2D Cyber space levels do not control well. On the plus side of the game. Sonic Frontiers is a much longer game than its previous main game, Sonic Forces. Although Sonic forces is not a great game enemy designs in Frontiers looks like Forces enemy's but better. 3D Cyber Space levels play like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 but in a much faster pace. Sonic has the Cyloop move which presumably appears in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Oh and yes the story is amazing and greatly paced. A Sonic game I actually cared about again. Expand

By far the best Sonic game I’ve ever played. The gameplay loop is addicting. The “open-zone” is fun to traverse and explore due to the floating rails, springs, and platforms. It feels like a playground or a skate park. Enemies, especially mini-bosses, have really interesting gimmicks.

Sonic Frontiers is EXACTLY What the Franchise needed. A Nice, Open world environment to work with and Feel like you, Yourself are Sonic. The Combat in this game is very thrilling and it seems like Sonic Team was throwing their hat into a Semi-RPG. The Story might even be my favorite part, Being written by Ian Flynn.

As a diehard Sonic fan, it pains me a lot to have to write this

If I compare it with other Sonic games, Sonic Frontiers is the 2nd worst, only above Sonic the hedgehog 2006 (for obvious reasons, since that game had a lot of bugs). It doesn't beat any Sonic Adventure, nor Colours, nor Generations, Unleashed, nor Heroes, nor of course, the unfairly criticized Forces

What happened with Sonic Frontiers? Well, it's a game where all the elements of the Sonic franchise fail: We don't have the colorful visual style, nor the cool music as always (the OST of Frontiers has its moments, but most of the time the music is boring), nor the enemies of the franchise as always

In short, what we have is a game that has mixed genres that separately have succeeded: Monster Hunter, The legend of Zelda, Phantasy Star, Shadows of Colossus, etc. but together, they don't fit together at all. It feels like Sonic has been shoehorned in. Then, with the criticisms of last summer, they have made the "effort" to put the cyberspace stages, but surely, they have done it in a hurry and in a hurry and they have left some very short stages (and to top it off, it is the only authentic thing of the Sonic franchise). As a result, we have a very irregular game, that in no way, can become the cornerstone of the next years. Now we have to wait for the real sales to see if this game "convinces even economically to SEGA" or gives them a bath of reality because it is not acceptable to make an open world that is deserted and built on purpose, to artificially lengthen the duration of the game. It would have been better for them to have continued with the magnificent formula of Sonic Adventure or Generations

    Graphics 5

The game is beautiful in the cyberspace stages, but in the open world it leaves much to be desired. The modeling of the enemies on the Starfall islands is pitiful

    Sound 6

This is the only thing that stands out in the game, and it does so at times. The "sad" or "relaxing" music doesn't suit the hedgehog at all

    Gameplay 3

The cyberspace stages are saved from burning. The open world ones make no sense and everything is made for you to waste your time walking around empty scenarios and the game lasts between 15 and 20 hours.Once platinum is not worth replaying it

    Total 4

The playable aspects weigh heavily on the rating and make the game not fun as a whole. The cyberspace stages are saved but they are too short

It is true that Sonic games had been becoming worse with each title of the mainline series since 2010, but Sonic Frontiers is finally a game Sonic Team can be proud of. It is not a perfect game, but imagine a situation: a kid had been getting F's for each homework, test, and exam just because they didn't care about school stuff, but one day they decided it is time to work for their future, so eventually, after days of hard work, they brought a C mark. That's not the best result that can be reached, but this C is an achievement for that kid, and if we don't praise this achievement now and just start emphasizing the flaws alone, the kid won't see any point in reaching new heights.

That's what Sonic Frontiers is for Sonic Team right now. It is a C (possibly even a B), but this is finally a good Sonic game that explores and expands the universe's lore, dives into characters and their thoughts, and brings a fun gameplay cycle you don't want to break for a rest. Sonic is not a meme, and this series doesn't have to do what Mario, Crash, or Spyro do — let Sonic be what he is good at, let him be a shonen for teens and young adults mixed with Nier, MGR, Devil May Cry, and Shadow of the Colossus, and just enjoy what he brings. Admiring Sonic Frontiers is a decent game won't bring you shame, and this is more valuable than trying to pretend the franchise is a constant joke.

It took me about 25 hours to beat the game, and I want to spend more in it, for the fighting can be really challenging and complex, traversing brings the feeling of excitement, and following the mystical story with no sarcasm in soul is no doubt interesting.

It is not only immersion breaking, but also makes it more difficult to play due to not knowing where to go to get a memory token due to object just not loading.

Other more understandable reasons are the combat. This is the first game and all, so understand it won't be the best, but the foundation in this game overall is fantastic including the combat. There is a lot to improve and build on for future titles. Another more nitpick is the lack of post-game content such as a new game+ or a higher difficulty. Otherwise I had a great time and thought it was a worthy purchase. Looking forward to see how this formula can improve in the future. Well done, Sonic Team!

Less of a review and more of an assessment. If you're a frustrated sonic fan like me, or a consumer who was duped by the cult of positivity around this game, come weary soul.

Sonic fans love to talk about a "Step forward" So much so, they never even consider where they're currently standing. For the past decade, Sonic has been nothing but terrible release after terrible release. This game is no exception. Instead of giving it the dismantling it bloody well deserves, they look forward "positively" about the next installment. It's an admirable sentiment, But they neglect something: we're not at the next installment, now are we? We don't know when, where or what the next installment will be. We don't know it's quality. We don't know if it will be rushed, and we don't know if Sega files bankruptcy between now and then as the economy crumbles.
And what happens if you point all of this out or fairly critique the game? They will smash down harder than a Bio-Lizard with a space colony up its rear. And they will flood you with endless bad faith justifications for their - let's be frank - brand addiction. Didn't play the game because you can tell by looking that it's not what you want? "You're being toxic. You didn't play it so you cant say anything negative" Played a little and hated it? "You're being toxic. You need to spend [arbitrary number] hours playing to give it a fair shake." You 100% completed it? "You're being toxic. You like the game if you completed it so why are you complaining?" The fandom has ushered in this dubious state of affairs and they cheer it on with uproarious applause... Every bad remaster of a decade+ old game? Blame the fans, because they create a culture where awfulness is acceptable.

There's a fascinating irony about all of this - Sonic in his early days was about moving forward, and freedom but ever since 06, the series has stagnated. There is this insultingly cynical recycling of Nostalgic locals. that have ruined those stages for me in their original games in retrospect. Control and freedom has been surgically stolen from the player with each installment until you got the brain-dead mechanics of Forces, and after a 5 year hiatus from games with next to no information, Frontiers drunkenly staggers onto market immediately making it apparent why Sonic's control has been removed from you:
Sega, and Sonic Team have no idea what they're doing and you can tell. I do not care how "Mean" this sounds to the hard working devs," a functional company would have dressed every single individual responsible for these missteps down and fired them. and replaced them with a bevy of the many talented modders and fangame creators that exist in their fandom. Sega's most prominent IP cannot seem to get a good reputation in gaming - this is how studios get shut down. I'm not being overdramatic, this kind of stuff destroys consumer trust, and the fans who cheer it on are kicking a quality can down the road when they themselves have the power to stop it by voting with their wallet.

Sonic suffers from Poor leadership and incompetency. Why are there so many control sliders? It's not "accessibility," It's a crutch. It's because they themselves don't know how to program a Sonic that feels intuitive to play and outsourced that responsibility to the player with the cynical abandon of a self checkout.
Even with the sliders, Sonic looks and feels like ass to play. He sticks to the ground, loses all momentum when jumping, feels unnaturally scripted, cannot intuitively run on terrain Sonic (the character) absolutely should be able to run on (unless the game tells you to), goes flying facing sideways off small pebbles and the combat feels incongruous with his movement setup. There are zero excuses for this: Even shooters have begun to grasp physics, movement, and character consistency. And this doesn't even address the rampant rendering issues.

I give the game credit for it's music. Doesn't brick a system and that's about it - below the bare minimum. If the community were more honest, this game would hover around a 5 or a 6 rating. It's ok to like the concept or idea for the future, but guys, this is a sixty dollar game. I didn't buy into a glorified alpha or a promise of what's to come "later". I brought this game. I want to have fun with this game now. I don't care about "potential" because none of that currently exists.

...It feels like the Sonic community stopped caring about the quality of a release and are just happy to get one, which I empathize with. Still, I will never appreciate positive review bombing a game at the expense of the consumer. When the afterglow wears of, Sonic fans will acknowledge it's bad everyone will mock it for decades, and the cycle will repeat - as it did for forces, as it did for Lost World, and as it did for Generations. Sonic is a dying gaming icon. He'll exist in other forms, sure, but as a game? My predictions aren't green hills for the blue blur.

A fun sonic game for the fans I love the open zone idea is just felt repetitive and combat is not the best but is not bad either in my opinion the story is good I love the voice acting in this game and i so glad Sega got it right this time is it the best in a series? No but is better than boom and forces that for sure

One of the best sonic games ever to date, for once the story is actually good and not a cringe made up story for 7 year olds, the game feels more like a mix between sonic adventure 2 and sonic colors.

The OST is so lit that it burned down my house and stole my car.

This game became my #2 top Sonic game of all time right after Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. This game is special and speaks the most to Sonic fans. To the people who reviewed this poorly, well I hope you can have faith in Sonic Team and maybe the next one is for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a stellar first attempt at course correcting the 3D sonic franchise. It isn't perfect, as its open zone features severe pop in, lack of any way to replay those awesome as **** pure metal boss fights. And the game does sort of lose steam near the end with Rhea island feeling more like
It was supposed to be there on the ground, and a lack of a third phase for The End's fight, even if that shmup phase was giving me goosebumps. That and Kronos being split up into 3 parts to seem bigger than it is, is telling they must've been on a tight time schedule near release, and I hope that doesn't happen for the next game as sega just needs to let sonic team do their thing and make something as good as what's put on display here.

But the positives far outweigh the bad for me on my playthrough, as this game's plot has more heart put into it than any of the comedic sonic games of the 2010s had ever been. Sure, some may not look for story in sonic. But for those of us fans that do appreciate a good story for these games, we appreciate it a lot. Ian Flynn writes this game with so much fanservice and callbacks that it feels rewarding to have played these games before coming into this one. And for what new details we get, it's in developing the already existing cast, and the somewhat tragic character of Sage, easily sonic's best antagonist (eventual supporting character) since possibly shadow the hedgehog.

The open zone gameplay, coupled with ok to fun puzzles to do. And neat (albeit overused in theming) cyberspace stages familiar to adventure, generations and unleashed, make for a fun experience overall as you travel through the starfall islands and bounce off stuff like in the opening cutscene of CD or Unleashed. It definitely seems like a project I could tell they were working on with honest, severe effort to give us something good. Music sounds absolutely incredible but that's no surprise from sonic team, and despite the pop in; the graphics and artstyle still look really appealing and character animation in-game is a massive step up from before.

By the end. I looked at Frontiers as the game that made my goty, and had reminded me the sonic I grew up with wasn't gone like i thought; just missing all this time as the series catered to a wildly different and weird direction i didnt like. If the game looks intriguing to you, and you haven't played a sonic game in a while; give it a go.

it's the game Sonic needed. I don't understand the score of the press reviews. It may have some minor technical issues, I guess due to limitations of the graphics engine, but it doesn't lose the essence of Sonic. 100% addictive, motivates you to do 100% of the game in a relaxed and calm way. This game is a winning formula, but poorly executed. I won't rehash what everyone else is saying, but here are some of the things that don't make sense:

-Some cutscenes (ie story) are skippable while some aren't (ie animation for bridge being constructed)
-Floating propeller boxes for items can be broken from all sides except for the bottom
-Your attack and defense stats automatically level to the max based on your inventory, but you have to sit through a cut scene for every level of your speed or ring level you increase
-The fishing mini game is programmed to let you aim where you cast, but it doesn't affect the catch rate
-Fish caught in the mini-pame cycle through in the same order, so there is no such thing as rare catches, or a reason behind why some fish award more/less tokens.
-You have to cycle through map filters to fast travel, even though the icons stay the same.
-Sonic gets stuck on most inclines in 2D areas
-Camera doesn't know how to follow sonic in boss battles
-You use the same tokens to talk to friends to talk with the main antagonist (who is an NPC sometimes??)
-The game doesn't stop counting skill points even after you max out your skill tree
-The map will still alert you that you can level up when you are max level just because you have items in your inventory
-Parrying in mid-air makes Sonic float. Parrying also doesn't require any timing
-Most cutscenes are rehashes, and feel like they're added just to pad out game length.
-Tone of the game is very serious, but when you beat a "challenge" stage, Sonic does a little jig to a midi song that doesn't match the rest of the soundtrack
-The fourth island is clearly the top half of the first island that was repurposed (but it does have one of the best overworld themes)
-Lastly, I don't mind any of the music in this game individually, but I wish it followed a consistent theme. Like stick to all emo, or stick to all EDM, or do jazzy little jingles. Nothing about this game feels consistent, just a bunch of ideas that the team floated and then realized they didn't have time to edit.

I personally enjoyed the plenty of playground-like obstacles that you traverse through in order to get memory tokens for the characters and how they can even be also used as a method of fast-travel, not to mention the ancient rails themselves. I also familiarized fairly quickly with the controls, including combat-based ones.

One thing that particularly stood out to is the writing, the characters are better than ever, no more background filler or cheesy one-liners or tropes. Amy is back to being a strong believer in love and caring for others, Knuckles is back to his island where he was supposed to be from the very beginning, and Tails improvement specially stood out to me the most, as he was always depicted as a nerdy coward since Sonic Unleashed. Sage, of course, is the embodiment of Ian Flynn's influence in the game's script, a character that left an emotional impact among fans since Chip in, again, Sonic Unleashed, while also showing to the world a more human side of Eggman. The only criticism i have about her character arc is the small amount of screentime Ian Flynn had to work with, i believe that a little more cutscenes had to be made in order to further show the father-daughter dynamic between Sage and Eggman, but still, i believe that enough information was delivered to form an idea of it, causing the final scene of the game to have such an impact among us sonic fans the way it did. Lastly, during the course of the game, there are mentions of previous characters that were once thought to be lately forgotten by Sega, like Cream the Rabbit and Blaze the Cat, and also the mentions of characters which canonicity was questioned, like Sticks the Badger and Tangle the Lemur. I personally like these mentions as they help feel more connection within the different aspects of Sonic's universe.

Now getting into the topic of bossess, my only criticism was the final boss against ''The End'', it was definitely an odd choice to execute the fight in an Ikaruga style gameplay, and this reflects the rushed development that Sega had at the very end of the game's development. On the other hand, the rest of the bossess before it are excellent.

The level design of the Cyberspace Stages, are personally acceptable to me within the context of the general gameplay and the story, they are arcade-like levels that are meant to possess similarities to previous sonic stages as these are sonic's memories stored in the Cyberspace. I believe the Forces-like short level formula works decently well in this game.

Overall, the game has minor flaws, but it is definitely not a ''death of a thousand cuts'', as these flaws are immediately overshadowed by the game's positive attributes. Sonic Frontiers definitely deserves to be praised just as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3&K, Sonic Heroes, etc. Do.

This site might list 7 as in the yellow but 7 to me means good, this is a GOOD Sonic game with a mountain of MINOR problems. It's not buggy, it can be a little rough and slightly unpolished but for the most part, my problems with this game are not stability of the product at all. Cyberspace is probably the absolute worst and slowest Sonic has controlled in 3D, I would rather fight 06 bugs and glitches then play Cyberspace levels. At least 06 can genuinely be fun sometimes, Cyberspace is just slow as **** and braindead, it functions completely fine and never ever bugs out but its just ****ing boring man, slow and boring. THANKFULLY, that's only like 10% of the actual game and the rest of it is, pretty fun? The best thing about Frontiers for me is just how well Sonic himself controls in the "open zone". He's fast, and when not weirdly being magnetized to the floor, he can jump pretty far. The titan fights are the highlight of the game easily, and I really appreciate most of the non ham-fisted nods and references to past Sonic events, be it niche or iconic. I also respect their effort to fix Tail's inconsistent characterization and Knuckles too. I don't have problems with Ian Flynn or his depictions of the characters, I think he did a good job. The final two islands are pretty disappointing after a good first three though, and the ending is pretty meh. When it comes down to it, the best parts of the games are easily the titan fights and music. I think it's thoroughly deserving of a 7/10, but like most Sonic products, not many people actually play these things. People formulate and take opinions from the internet, because it's Sonic. He has to be bad right, never good? Never even decent? This is a step in the right direction, would like to see more.

Sonic Frontiers is really a good game. Of course, the game has weaknesses but for a first try, I think some people could find a lot of fun, and it has a good potential for the future of the series. If you have the possibility, try the game by yourself, I think you can have a better understanding of the new formula with controller in your hands.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played Sonic games since the late 90's. I fairly love 2D and 3D versions of the games. But, I'd be lying if I were to say that I've enjoyed any of the recent titles. I think i'd say I felt out of love with them around Sonic 06 (yes we all know that title). But I actually adored the SA and SA2 era. The ones after 06 just never caught my eye, Unleashed was okay, I did try colors...but ended up disliking it. Generations were okay but I wasn't the biggest fan. Forces...yeah.

Okay now you see where my mind was while seeing the first trailers for this game, you can imagine how hopeful and scared I was for this game. When I first played and saw the open world, it did feel off. But I think it's due to not seeing an open world with random springs and railings. But strangely it played right? It's so tough to explain that, It felt like I was playing the Adventure era all over again. The combos I think are a bigger surprise. I thought Sonic actually fighting would only make sense or feel right in something like Smash Bros. But to my surprise, it felt very good to pull off. The quests/puzzles/etc are very short sweet and too the point, which makes sense for a Sonic game.

    Cons:
Like many open worlds/open area, there's bugs. But Sonic Frontiers has a few unique ones. The game contains 2D and 3D sections. Both in the "Cybershell" (stages) and the open areas. While I haven't seen too many issues with Cybershell's 2D, sometimes the open area has a tough time choosing between 2D and 3D in some sections. I think in part it may have something to do with Sonic's speed (which can actually be adjusted) but I really wanted to point it out since It actually can get stuck. There are definitely a few bugs/glitches/jank in the game, but I hadn't seen anything crazy or game-breaking. I played this on PC so I can't speak for every iteration. Lastly, while I enjoyed the story, I wished it actually had more cutscenes (for the story course), to tie in the story, but that's more so a nitpick.

    Overall:

While this game isn't exactly the game of the year for me, It definitely gave a fun impression that I haven't felt in years while playing a Sonic game. It felt fresh, similar to how the Adventure era but with a little bit of everything in one game. It does have its bugs and quirks, but as a game that just games, It's solid in my book. Not to mention, it definitely set the bar for whatever the Sonic Team has next.

It's also easy to level up Sega knew about it so they made it to level up you have to complete challenges and exploration. It also does something Sega has never done allowing people to customize how fast they want to be they also allow you to defeat mini bosses that can improve you skills to fight the main boss of the island each island has 7 chaos emeralds you can either use big to get vault keys or portal gear to be able to get vault keys Or use it to get memory tokens tails knuckles and Amy are stuck in cyber space but memory tokens can free them to progress Expand

Sonic Frontiers is a step in the right direction. Open zone gameplay is smooth. Cyberspace levels although not perfect was fun as well. Titan bosses are one of the best bosses I have ever seen in a sonic game. Final boss a bit of a disappointment but still challenging. Overall Sonic Frontiers is a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is amazing! Definitely the best Sonic game I've played in a long while. Although, I do have some criticisms like the last two islands being a rip off of Kronos, the Cyberspace levels being too short and reusing previous level asset. That and only using four level themes. Plus, the last two bosses felt a little lackluster compared to the first three. Also, the animation for the in game cut scenes are pretty stiff. Lastly, the part of the story where Sonic was cured of his cyber corruption felt like it was resolved too quickly. Despite all the criticism I have with the game, everything else was great! It really lays a good foundation for a possible sequel or something completely different in terms of Sonic games. I hope you keep the formula around for a long time, Sonic Team! I think it has the potential to really strike gold within the franchise Expand

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
