This is what a Sonic game should be! Is it perfect? No. Is it engaging fun that makes you feel strong as Sonic? Yes. I’ve switched between that and the PS4 version of the game, and I would say it is still more than playable with lower frame rates or older hardware. The problem lies in that it is not as smooth or visually stunning, two things that really make the open zone stick the landing. This game strives in it’s open environments when you can flow between set pieces in creative and fast paced ways. This is not always an option however which leads me to other issues. Poor animations, a lack memorable and functioning set pieces, odd and lazy decisions for cyberspace stages, and overall polishing problems are just some issues that plague this game, but I can’t help but admire the ambition and how overall fun it is as a whole package. These are building blocks for Sega to start making complete games for the blue blur, instead of half baked forced out messes or glorified tech demos. You care about the story, you care about the gameplay, you care about the characters and that’s why it’s a good game. It’s not perfect, but the start to something great. Unless you lack the skill to control Sonic both fun & freely this game is automatic 8.5/10 & could be 10 if there weren’t any of these issues. Expand

I genuinely love sonic games but this one could have used some more polish before release. All of the animations are stiff and strange looking, the way Sonic’s momentum stops whenever you jump or just stop moving is so janky. When the game is letting you go fast in some of the cyberspace levels it’s SOMEWHAT fun which is why I’m not rating this game below a 5. When the game is letting you go fast in some of the cyberspace levels it’s SOMEWHAT fun which is why I’m not rating this game below a 5. But if I want to play a game with that cyberspace gameplay, I’ll just boot up Sonic Generations or Colors.

The presentation is seriously lacking, I don’t care for graphical fidelity, but the art direction here looks like something that could be made using mostly stock assets in stock unreal engine. You will be constantly running into walls that just pop out of nowhere. These issues kind of go away in the cyberspace levels where things are actually cool looking.

The music was good, I’m still listening to the 1-2 cyberspace music. Story and voice acting was passable. I’m so tired of reviews for games this year featuring the phrase, “this is a step in the right direction…” Yes! It is! But why can’t we just get to where we’re going already? Gamers need to higher their standards for AAA games, otherwise AAA developers will lose the craftsmanship that have given us the great games of the past. I love Sonic, and this guy deserves a 10/10 game, not a “step in the right direction.”

Kind of pathetic to watch these Dunkey fans review bomb this game. Why do some people like his content again? Is it because of his extreme gaming knowledge? Oh wait that can't be it, he doesn't have that. Oh yeah of course, because he does stupid voice when he talks in his reviews and 12 year olds think it's hilarious.

The cyberspace levels were Also very entertaining and give us a glimpse of other Sonic games of the past, through the level design itself. The idea of the open world for me was very well executed. For those who like to take their time to explore and admiring the view of the Islands, it was a breath of fresh air.
Altho the game for me was an absolutelly masterpiece that all us Sonic fans were waiting for a long time, there still some aspects that i think SEGA could do better, for exemple:
-I found some bugs along the way that were kinda annoying. I was even stuck at a rock, glitching non stop. I had to shut down the game and open it again - There was times where my controls stopped fuctioning. For exemple when i was doing some jumps, it all the sudden they stop working. I had to repeat some times the same Path because of it. It was a little annoying.
    - The ending was good, but I was expecting a little more "wow factor". The boss fight could been a little longer, and was expecting some new form of power of Sonic. It is just my opinion.
Overall, Sonic Frontiers have a solid base for a future games. I hope that Ian Flinn continues working on games because he is a suberb storyteller and knows the world and the characters better than anyone else. Really recomend buying the game!

So much of this game works, and for that, its the best sonic game in 20 years. but so much of it also does not work at all. I can't believe the pinball part made it past Quality Assurance at all. I loved the game from beginning to end, I love the puzzles that are scattered on the map but there are 3 main problems for which I do not give it 10/10, which are: 1 the fishing system is broken and that in 15 minutes of When you fish, you can get all the skills to the top, what I would have done was that both in the puzzles spread over the islands there would be different fragments and that in the fishing area as a balance to progress in the game at a normal pace. 2 the poppin and how it appears on the face sometimes. 3 the final boss which is basically an epic and well-done part that later becomes slow and heavy in terms of the rhythm of the game because it seems more like a touhou face than a final boss. In conclusion the game is good but it could be better Expand

However it needs improvement mostly with the combat system which I feel is far too easy for its own good, I like the fact it's fast paced and doesn't slow down the gameplay but I wish it required a bit more challange. Some of the pop in can get pretty bad in the game to the point it just breaks all immersion. Only reason I don't mind it is due to how much it is playing as Sonic as you are going too fast to care about the pop in. The game could be a solid 10 for me but the lack of polish and reuse of level themes really brings down the game.

The story was surprisingly good, thankfully it's not garbage or mediocre writing like what we got in the recent games and I think a true sonic fan would love the story and the lore introduced in this game. Sonic frontiers feels like something Sega themselves care about and I can't wait to see a sequel.

It's not the best sonic game but it is one of the best, it's a step in the right direction for the franchise if you ask me. And I hope Sega and Sonic team continue to evolve and continue to use this new open zone formate for future games. Sonic frontiers is a 9/10 for me but it could be better. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is Sonic's first great 3D action game in over a decade. Sonic controls responsively through out 4 and 1/2 large open hub areas called the "Starfall Islands." Along with one of the best soundtracks in the series, best characterization of Sonic and his friends since the Dark Era, and a heart wrenching story makes this an unforgettable experience your first time through. The combat is fun and addictive as stringing together different moves feels both flashy and fun, and the Super Sonic fights are some of the most HYPE sequences in the entire franchise.

However this game suffers greatly in other areas. It suffers from a lack of an interesting art style, an over abundance of forced linearity in the open zones, poor cut-scene quality, poor animation quality that will have sonic snapping between key poses with absolutely no transitions whatsoever, along with lacking in a core game play loop that stays fun across it's 15-30 hour campaign. The mini cyberspace stages control like crap as Sonic is magnetized to the ground and home attack chains take so long to complete it's better to avoid enemies if you wish to achieve S ranks.

/// This segment contains spoilers for the ending of Sonic Frontiers ///

The game's ending also leaves much to be desired, by playing the game on normal difficulty or below, Sonic fights the final titan as the game fades to black and the credits roll with no genuine ending. By playing the game on hard however, Sonic will fly up into space with Sage and fight the AI voice that has been guiding you through the game, threatening to destroy all of creation as it takes the form of the Moon. It's then where the game pulls a complete 180, Instead of a big climactic Super Sonic fight alongside Sage as you fight together and take down this ultimate evil. You instead play an omage to touhou; thrown in with little rhyme or reason. Followed by an extremely easy quick time event as sage then sacrifices herself to destroy the Moon. It then abruptly ends as Sonic and Co. get on a plane and fly off into the sunset, Sonic not reflecting on Sage's sacrifice or the journey he just experienced. Leaving a really bad taste in your mouth as the game raises more questions then answered.

Sonic Frontiers is a rushed, janky, but enjoyable step in the right direction. A foundation to build an even greater experience upon. 7/10

This game is just the great return of Sonic and SEGA. The people who criticize this Sonic have even't finished it, and the journalists are liars, they rated the game badly for God of war. There are many flaws but it's a good first open-world for the series. Bravo SEGA and Team Sonic, 10/10 to support you because you are on the right track!

I am a huge fan of Sonic and have been my entire life, I loved games like Unleashed (only the daytime parts), Colors, Gens & Adventure 1. But when Lost World & Forces came out it kinda seemed like the Blue Blur wouldn’t get back up, Until Frontiers came out that is.

This game is the most fun I’ve had with a Sonic game since Unleashed, Colors & Generations. The combos are so satisfying more than the Werehog (or at least the HD Version), The story is great & the atmosphere is amazing! The boss fights are the most fun I’ve ever had in a Sonic game ever, especially Giganto & The second to last boss that I won’t name for the sake of spoilers. The only weak point of the game is kind of Cyberspace, I was hoping these would be a mix of Colors & Unleashed stages as those are the best of the Boost Era, but nope it’s closer to an Arcade style Forces level with Lost World physics. It’s not all bad though as getting S ranks can be fun! (Except 1-2). All in all this is most fun I’ve ever had with Sonic in 10 years! Please pick this game up!

The combat and Gameplay can be a bit broken which needs a bit of fixing because some boss can either be easy or annoying. The Game after world 3 gets shorter and doesn't have much to offer. World 4 is just world 1 reused for a sort Of challenge which is pretty quick to accomplish and finish world 5 is just similar like world 1-3 but very shorter and not really much to explore and sage tokens are just reused Amy tokens designs
As for big fishing mini games it feels to much rewarding to the point you can kinda skip a lot of the game trading fish tokens for important progressing items in the game
Overall though behind its minor flaws sonic frontiers is still a good experience its definitely a game sonic fans and new comers can get enjoyment out of

The thing I love about the game is the character interactions, Amy, Knuckles and Tails actually feel like characters with personalities in this game and not just portrayed as annoying and boring. Amy doesn’t feel like the love crazy girlfriend sonic always tries to avoid but like a caring and loving person. Knuckles feels scared knowing he’s the last Acidna and that he’ll die alone but he’s comforted by sonic telling him that he’ll have him and the others to grow old with. And tails oh boy, tails feels upset with himself as he thinks of himself as a burden to sonic and just an annoying sidekick who always needs help but sonic takes that older brother role and comforts him and tells him that he’s not a burden and that needing help isn’t a bad thing but just part of growing up. The combat in this game is boring and repetitive. The story is a joke and so are the puzzles. The textures are awful and the greedy developers had the nerve to slap a $60 price tag on this game, not to mention how horrible the rain looks.

There is nothing to do in the open world. It is the typical modern open world game. Just a boring and empty world full of rocks and plants. Speaking of plants, it doesn't even react to your movement. I'm sick to death of developers making open world games in empty landscapes. Why aren't there enough human-made materials or built environments? Oh that's right, because that would actually require hard work. It's easier to just copy/paste plants everywhere and play around with the elevation tools to create hills and rocks. Nothing in this game feels well thought out. It just feels like these developers randomly added things into the open world and called it a day.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. It's funny how these empty open world games rarely have multiplayer. It's almost as if these greedy and lazy developers don't want to work, which is why these barren landscapes are common in AAA open world games. I only recommend this game until it is $15 or less.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
