Frontiers is a spark of home for this franchise and i recommend everyone to play this game.

The ost and sound design is incredible and makes you feel everything they want to show to you.
The story is about something deeper than i expected and the writing is very better, sonic feels more like idw Sonic but at the same time Pontaff Sonic.
He don't take things seriously but he cares about the consequences of it and he also sound more mature and comprehensive.
The feel of speed in this game is awesome, the gameplay is intuitive and the combat is great and creative.
All i can say is this game isn't perfect but isn't they fault cause i know how develop a game is and time and manpower is important.
This game have much inconsistency but I think it can be fixed in next game.

Honestly a really great game and a darn good sonic game. There were a lot of aspects of the game I enjoyed. Loved the super sonic boss fights and the combat while simple, does a great job of delivering an enjoyable experience. There are also the cyberspace levels which are essentially special stages in this game and are not even required. These are probably my least favorite part of the game as while they can be fun to speed run, the control can be customized and the physics are a little weird for me. The story and writing are honestly some of the best I’ve seen from the series. I was engrossed the whole time and the writing finally seems like these characters are being understood and this is also reflected in the voice acting. The direction these voice actors take breathe new life into these characters, and can be surprising that these actors have voiced some of these characters for years. Overall, I think the game takes the sonic series in the right direction and hope that they can continue to build and improve upon this game in the future. Expand

Has a few tiny shortcomings but the positives outweigh any negativity I could say, by far the best Controlling 3D Sonic in the past 15 or so years, and finally a good, engaging story, and holy damn... Super Sonic is the best he has ever been freaking EVER.

OST also goes extremely hard but that's a given when it comes to Sonic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a rellay good presentation for a promising future for the franchise.
The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.

But overall, I think this game is great and, if not the best, is definitely laying groundworks for something greater in the future. If someone at SEGA sees this, please ignore the Dunkey fanbase, they're just being mean hearted to get Dunkey's attention. It's not his fault, he just needs to get his audience straight. But yeah, listen to the actual reviews with actual criticisms, not reviews just being made because "Dunkey said it."

The story may be more on the simple side, but the character moments and the new character, Sage is amazing!
For any that are worried about the overworld, I can say with full confidence that the overworld is really fun to explore and Sonic's speed makes it really easy to explore most of each main overworld. There are methods of fast travel in case you dont want to run around all over the place, but I wont share how to get them and it would be best for you all to figure it out as you play.

    Issues with the game:
This is just a nitpick, but I'm personally not a fan of the 2D platforming, especially when the 3D platforming is so much fun. I wont say its not enjoyable. It has its moments, but I would much rather there be more 3D platforming than 2D.
    --
The final part of the game is a bit of a disappointment in comparison to the all of the amazing moments in the game and it can lead you to feeling confused if youre not prepared for it.
    --
Theres a part in the game thats actually the second half of another area, but they decided to label as something new. I'm sure there is a technical reason for separating them, but it would be better to label it as a (part 2) rather than naming it something else.
    --

To conclude, Sonic Frontiers is an amazing game and an exciting direction Sonic Team can take it that will make general gamers and the fans really pleased! If youre a Sonic fan, this is a MUST BUY and if youre just a gamer wondering if this game is worth the $60, it is but please be aware that the story is more on the simple side is more focused on characters and lore building. If a deep story is something youre looking for in a game, I don't think this will be for you. However, if gameplay and one of the best experiences in controlling sonic is what you want, then this is totally worth it!

+Crazy boss fights that come straight out of an anime. +So much to explore and collect!
+ Intense speed and action! + Beautiful overworld music like something straight out of Nier Automata or a Square Enix ost. + Laid back mini fishing games in each area to tone down after all the high intensity speed and action. I’m personally really loving it, the last 2 islands did feel kinda rushed though and 2D sections can be wonky but I’m glad those are short. There are a rare few 3d platform sections and I think 3d sonic should stay like this with those sections thrown in here and there to keep players engaged longer. Also I feel the last two islands should have had their own theme like the first 3. I think the last island while smaller then the first three, is big enough and all the islands should have been this big but with more islands to explore too with different themes like a snowy mountains, seaside etc.

Overall lovely game with a few quality of life changes needed that I feel would make it an outstanding game but that doesn’t mean it’s average, this game is brilliant. Team Sonic finally made a 3D Sonic worth playing (yes it’s better then Generations & Colours)! I personally loved it and at the end of the day, that’s all that should matter whenever you game.

i like the game as a concept. this feels unfinished and glitchy. the open world is great, but feels slow and boring, like the designer copy pasted in the obstacles, instead of designing them for the level. the pop-in is horrendous, and they cant figure out how to incorporate DLC. i hope the next entry builds off this.

So let's say that this game didn't have the best start with the ign first being so bad but time passed and we started getting better footage. But now that i have the game it's really good although some parts aren't like the cyberspace being rehashed but if you take that away the game's controls feel very crisp and smooth. And the story being more serious now that Ian Flynn is writing the story

I do generally enjoy the game a lot but I won't deny that it has some issues I hope get worked on for the game because they do have a good base here for future games... The issues I had being the pop in and some animations not being of the same quality of others and the combat not being as fleshed out as they implied it would be.

Dialogues, character interactions, lore expansion. Beatiful. The graphics... don't what to say about it, it's fine. Combat system was interesting, enemies, guardians and bosses was just exciting to fight with. Music is so variable, I liked it. I definitely want Sega and Sonic Team move in that direction, it has a lot of potential. Just don't use Super Mario Bros 3 as your main source of inspiration, mr Kishimoto.

But overall it's a pretty solid game, awesome new voice direction, AWESOME soundtrack might I add since I'm a really big metal fan too!! Only serious complaint is the cyberspace stages making Sonic feel too heavy or sometimes doing weird dead stops because of the map geometry.

    SPOILERS vvvv

And I think the final titan should have been more difficult and less of the focus placed on the weird Space Invaders like section at the end. I kinda liked what they were going for, but maybe the Space invaders esc fight shouldve happened before the titan. was shorter and then the titans in general be a little harder (as a setting ofc) hard didn't feel too hard

It's a good proof of concept for an open-world Sonic game, but it falls short in some key areas. If nothing else Sonic controls wonderfully in the overworld, which is what made me finish the game despite its flaws.

My biggest issue would have to be the actual content in the open zones. Much of your time playing Sonic Frontiers will be spent locating keys, gears, and memory tokens. These collectibles are found by fighting enemies, completing cyberspace levels, and going through short obstacle courses in the overworld. While this sounds like a fun gameplay loop I found each of these elements lacking.

The obstacle courses are scattered everywhere throughout the islands. Each one is a quick 20 to 30-second challenge that rewards the player with a memory token or vault key. Given how fun it is to control Sonic I figured these would be my favorite parts of the game, but they ended up being my least favorite. The vast majority of these sections tend to require very little player input. There is an abundance of springs, dash pads, and grind rails that require little control from the player and guide them to the end of the challenge. Most of the player input involves holding forward and using the homing attack on a string of three balloons. It's disappointing how little platforming actually needs to be done (in the open zones) considering Sonic's smooth controls.

Fighting enemies was also disappointing since it was hyped up in many of the game's trailers, but in the end, most enemies can be defeated by mashing the attack button. When mashing doesn't work the solution is usually to use Sonic's new Cyloop ability. Like the combat, the Cyloop was hyped up in marketing to be more impressive than it actually is. For both puzzles and combat, the Cyloop involves running in a single circle around an enemy or object and that's about it for the majority of the game. Besides the Cyloop, you can also use other special attacks by pressing one of the other face buttons during your button mashing. These look cool and flashy, but I quickly realized that most of the special moves were effectively short cutscenes that did massive damage for little effort. As far as I'm aware, Sonic has invincibility during these animations, so using them is usually more efficient than dodging or parrying. Boss enemies do offer short puzzles before you can button mash, so those were typically the most engaging. The Sumo enemies in particular were great. The true bosses of each island were also cool for the spectacle alone, but the combat was mostly more button-mashing.

The cyberspace levels were consistently my favorite part of the game. Though I'm sick of seeing Green Hill and Chemical plant the corrupted aesthetic made them visually interesting, unlike the dull overworld that lacks a distinct visual identity. The same sentiment applies to the music which was pretty good. These levels are where you can actually put Sonic's movement potential to use. You can explore the level for Red Rings or alternative paths and push yourself to the limit trying to get faster and faster as you master the stage. My only real complaints are the reused stage themes (there are only four themes btw) and the short length of each stage.

Overall Sonic Frontiers is okay, but it kinda feels like a tech demo at times meant to show how cool it would be to run fast in a grassy field. They were right, running fast in a grassy field is fun, but that can only go so far. If you like Sonic you have probably already bought this game and it's now your game of the year. If you don't like Sonic you'll find a middling open-world game with some cool movement. I'm somewhere in the middle. I love Sonic, but I think the game ranges from lackluster at worst and okay at best.

The story is engaging, making a good balance between a serious one and in occasions with some good old jokes, for example, some lines between Sonic and Knuckles. Entering to a cyberspace stage and immediately you feel and get the vibes to the old good boost era, like those from Unleashed or Generations. Still, i would have themes based on the island rather than have them based on the classical zones like Green Hill, Chemical Plant or Sky Sanctuary. Unfortunately, one thing I'm about to give thumbs down is the controls. It's stills feels heavy, especially when sonic is boosting. I wish it was more smoothly like the open-zone. The music for the cyberspace stages is catchy and speaking of music, wow, I can't believe that we've got into the "Metal Gear Rising" mode with those Titans boss fights. Very metal and heavy, a love letter to fans of the metalcore/post-hardcore.

Are there hiccups in the game shifting Sonic from 3D to 2D platforming? Yes.
Does the environment “pop in” when you are going lightning speeds across locations? Sometimes.

But in either case, I have been able to use the multitude of abilities I have to reclaim my balance/safety on the map. You tripped? Boost or double jump out of it to rebalance.
You missed a railing? Double jump back and stop spamming boost everywhere. The game becomes natural to control once you give it the chance. We are talking about the worlds fastest hedgehog, and even then the game provides option to those who prefer not to go so fast. It’s a great game direction for Sonic, my only real advice is that the game be a tad less corny and even then that’s just another Sonic trademark.

Please pursue this direction for Sonic, Sega, as it will continue to revive this series so many of us cherish and love. And I hope the constructive criticism will set itself apart from review bombing.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
