So since I ACTUALLY played the game I’m gonna be giving this a two thumbs up since it’s the most fun Sonic game I’ve played In awhile, especially after how dreadful Forces was.

But anyway go try this game, you might really like it Also to Dunkey fans: Y’all not smart by review bombing the game, you’ve just proven that you don’t like seeing Sonic fans happy and it shows.

After 24ish hours to 100% the game, during which time I realized I didn't need to collect every collectible in order to do so, I can say I genuinely had fun playing a video game in a long time. There were some sections that I felt were rather problematic but in general the gameplay was fun and both the music and visuals made me want to keep running around the areas. However, my main issues with the game were that some of the story mini games made me feel an unbridled rage and some situations left me clueless as to what I needed to do with the hint system being nearly useless. Of these situations my least favorite events were, one, where sonic leapt off a raised bridge and you had to do a freefall in order to reach the ground, however, you were timed and the slightest mistake could leave you low on time or failing the quest meaning you had to actively choose to avoid the orange rings and springs and just speed dive to the ground. And my second instance that left me befuddled was the first time I encountered the enemy that just straight up drowns you. It may just be a skill issue but I didn't realize I had to stomp to escape the enemy until I got the clue in the game over sequence. I had simply assumed I needed to jump more and faster in order to break out of the thing. That said, even with these issues I had a truly wonderful time and after taking a quick break from the game I will be returning to it to play it more. Also if you own the game on PC I would greatly recommend installing Hedgemod manager in order to disable the camera locking onto the umbrella enemy. It's a major quality of life improvement. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’d give it a 7.5 if I could, fyi. My favorite part about this game was the use of past lore and building upon it, as well as the more serious take on Sonic in general and its characterizations again. I’ve been an avid Sonic fan ever since I was a kid, and I won’t lie, the Adventure era more or less is the only style of the games I genuinely love. Another thing I enjoyed about the Adventure era was the generally more serious tone they had alongside well-written dialogue. So as you can imagine, I haven’t really enjoyed the games much since Sonic Colors came out. I cannot stand the use of 2D platforming, and I cannot stand the unfunny, childish dialogue and stories. After so many years, at least the childish writing finally stopped. I truly appreciate that.

The combat: An interesting type of gameplay for Sonic, I thought it was really fun and cool to see Sonic do all the different types of attacks. Unfortunately I had many issues with the combos not triggering. But going forward I don’t think I’d mind this type of combat system being used for boss fights.

The open world: I’ve never been a fan of open world games but this one isn’t so bad. The objectives are clear and I typically know exactly where I need to go. One thing I’ve truly missed in recent Sonic games is the hub worlds, this is kinda like that, not quite, but it made me happy to be able to just run around as Sonic again and go from objective to objective. Although, I had many issues with Sonic launching off of bumps wanting to do flips in the air when I’m just trying to get from point A to point B. The worst offender in the open world though is when it locks you to 2D platforming. Especially when you’re casually running around and just happen to come in contact with a 2D section. This is the most frustrating and annoying thing in the game to me. Anyway screw Chaos Island, all my homies hate Chaos Island.

Boss fights: Easily the best part of the whole game. This made every Sonic fan’s dreams come true. This showed everyone just how badass Sonic can be. The animations paired with the metal music was absolutely stellar. I definitely want the boss fights in future Sonic games to be as cool as these were.

Bullet hells: I do not care for these. This isn’t even close to what I think of when I think of Sonic. Please do not put these in the next Sonic game unless they’re side minigames. I wasn’t too upset with it until I got to the final boss of the game. Seriously why in the hell would you make the final boss of a Sonic game a bullet hell. Especially when the previous boss fights were so kick ass.

Pinball: As a Sonic fan, I’m used to pinball in Sonic games. However, the requirement of 5 million points was overkill. Also how could you not make Sonic the pinball?

Story: I adored how much talking I got to do with all the other characters in this game. I loved getting some real insight on the inner workings of these guys. A lot of the cutscenes in this game made me very emotional. I loved seeing some real development in these characters after so many stagnant years. And all the extra pieces of lore we got were really awesome. Especially when they haven’t built on this specific part of the lore since Sonic Adventure 1. However I do wish there was more of a backstory to “The End.”

Music: The music in Sonic games is always killer. Of course I loved the music in this game. But I’ve seen some people try to say it’s the best yet or that the new guest singers are better than Crush 40 and I have to stop you there. Absolutely not; Crush 40 will always be number one for me and I truly missed them in this game. I need Jun’s guitar’s specific sound and Johnny’s rough and deep voice back. Would’ve pushed my rating to an 8.5 because I personally put a lot of stock in the soundtrack of games. I hope they cover one or more of the songs at least. But hey, I’ll always love Ohtani. Fantastic job as usual, king!

Cyberspace stages: For this specific game, the shortness of these levels work. In Forces it didn’t work at all because that was the whole game. In the future though I would prefer longer levels, only 3D platforming, and mini puzzles to all be included in each level. Basically, I’d prefer the Adventure era gameplay, surprising. BUT, for this game, since there is so much else to do, the cyberspace levels work as they are imo.

Fishing: I love a fishing minigame as much as the next person, and I definitely enjoyed fishing in this game. But it is weird how you can essentially speedrun the game by choosing to just fish instead of doing anything in the overworld. Freaking adored the Egg Memos though, that is a genius reward for fishing.

The #1 thing I hope for the next game: We need multiple playable characters back. Each with their own style of gameplay. Sonic is great but he’s never been my fave. Not when we have Rouge and Shadow and Silver and all these other fantastic characters I love.

My issues how ever come with some different things, the cyber space levels need MUCH better physics, the boss fights although cool need much more balancing cause half the time it felt like I was just pressing buttons and a 50/50 shot on if I’d do anything, the “true final boss” is also insanely difficult and can only be played on hard mode. Those were my biggest issues. The best thing about this game by far was the music, a very peaceful feel while running through the open world, but turns up the heat with some awesome metal tracks in the boss fights, absolutely incredible

cyber space actually improves the further in the game you go. not just because they stop trying to force-feed you so many 2d cyberspace stages, but also because they pull from more SA2, SA1 and hero levels. i was overly excited when i realized one level was metal harbor. that said they really should have more than 4 visual themes, but it doesn't detract to much from the cyberspace stages.

    now it's not all sunshine
some of the puzzles and mini range from mediocre to down right frustrating. (looking at you chaos island.) with my leasta favorite one being where you have to collect 600 scrap metal. which wouldn't be so much of a pain except there is a short timer and the peices do not magnetize to you.
while every single main boss slaps in this game. some of the mini bosses are hit or miss.
with the worst of them being the shark mini boss which has way to many QTE for my taste.

now onto the best part i feel for this game besides the open zone aspect.

The story is much more melancholic then recent games and the stakes are also the highest it's been since the adventure levels. I WILL NOT put any spoilers besides saying this game's story is about the star fair islands inhabitants, but much more it's a story about retrospective reflection as well as a surprise introspective view of Eggman's thoughts. b y the end of this game you will feel sorry for Eggman. which is not a sentence I would thought I would be saying. Shout out to ian flynn for this masterful writing. you will be shocked at the amount of call backs and actual character development we get in this game.

It's not entirely unfun though, it can be a little fun sometimes. What isn't fun at all are the cyberspace levels. A complete downgrade from the boost levels we saw in Unleashed, Colors, Generations, and somehow even Forces. While the levels can have decent design sometimes (mostly because they take them from better games) Sonic does not control well in the slightest. Everytime I jump I feel like I'm fighting with the game, and Sonic is not fast at all in these levels. These are easily the worst parts of the game, and in my opinion, some of the worst Sonic gameplay we have ever gotten in the history of this franchise. There are some things I do love about this game though. The boss fights at the end of each island are AMAZING and are just super hype, especially with the music they used. The fishing minigame with Big the Cat is also very nice and relaxing, and I enjoyed doing it a lot. Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a game with some highs, but insanely low lows. I do think a casual fan would enjoy this a lot, but if you're a hardcore fan, it's a 50/50 chance you may love or hate this game. Expand

The videos online do not do this game justice, you must simply play yourself, as the controls are tight and response as well as fluid.

This game blows Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild out of the water and sets a new bar for open world games as this one takes crown.

This game is abysmal. I don't know how some folks are seeing it as anything other than that, although I suspect most of them are being less than honest. I don't wanna waste any more time than I spent playing this mess, so lets get right into some specifics:

Sonic's controls are not good. I would say it controls like forces, but with a cruel, monkey's paw twist. The boost has been made thoroughly unsatisfying. I've tinkered with all the settings I could to try and make it just right, but either it's barely faster than jogging, or way too fast. If I could use that speed to -say, do death defying jumps I wouldn't mind a little uncontrollable speed. However, jumping makes all your forward velocity vanish. You can try to air-boost to make up for this, but you will never go as fast, AND you drop like a rock. However, unlike Forces, you can turn. Which is probably the lowest possible bar for a game to reach. Regardless of the problems I can identify, there is far more rot under the surface here that I want to address:

You see, there has been a constant problem with how fans try to diagnosis the controls. Where fans identify one problem with them and blame it for everything, to which SEGA randomly decides to "fix". Only for something else to feel wrong. For the longest time the magic word has been "momentum". Which itself is not a accurate measure of what used to make Sonic feel good. The point I'm trying to make is this:

Sonic's controls NEED to be very nuanced.

there is no one secret ingredient to make it feel good. Sonic is inherently a much harder character to make feel good than basically any other platformer. So a whole lot more care has to be taken to make the game fun.

But the controls aren't the only aspect of this game that are in dire straits. The open-world is a chore. No it's not "open-zone". That's a meaningless marketing buzzword to make it sound like the Dev's have created something new and original. Which is something this games sorely lacks. Almost every 5 steps I take I get trapped by a boost pad or a spring and forced into an incoherent platforming "challenge". This is especially pronounced in the third island where you constantly lose control, and are forced into mandatory 2d sections (which Sonic controls noticeably worse in).

Speaking of the islands, there are TECHNICALLY 5 of them. 3 of them are themed exactly the same. And two of those are literally opposite sides of the same island, leaving both halves feeling severely lacking.

But we don't just have an open world in this game, we also have traditional levels called "cyberspace". Every aspect of the cyberspace levels are stolen from other, better games. And if that were all, I'd wouldn't complain that much. But for some reason sonic controls so much WORSE in these levels. Worse than forces even!

The games combat is just about the only thing that is "okay". It lacks any originality, but I didn't want to smash my controller like I did with the platforming. The "big new feature" of this games combat (and it's "puzzles", which is a very charitable description for some of them) is the cyloop. Where you draw a circle and then... something happens (whatever needs to happen at the time. Cyloop-Ex-Machina).
Which if drawing circles sounds appealing to you, I recommend you check out the Pokemon Ranger games. Way more fun there, and somehow the dumb Pokemon side-games also have better stories than this one.

Speaking of which, the plot of the game is at best "meh" and at worse incomprehensibly stupid. I must admit though, the character interactions is where I got most of my enjoyment from the game. It's a genuine breath of fresh air to see Sonic and friends actually act... friendly. So while the plot is a mess, at least the characters are pretty decent. The new character Sage is a standout, much like Shadow was in SA2. Which is the biggest complement I can give. Even so, I could've saved myself the trouble and watch these cutscenes on Youtube instead of wasting my time with the actual game.

Music in this game is also no where near the standard this series has had. There was only one song I actively enjoyed, and it only played at the end credits. Sonic Forces had music LEAGUES better than this. Despite being- well, Sonic Forces.

My first playthrough of this game took a little over 10 hours from start to finish. Including the "true final boss" (that boss isn't good by the way). Well under the advertised 20 hours. even so, I didn't enjoy 90% of those 10 hours, I only played that long to make sure I can give this a fair review. I mean at least Sonic Forces was merciful enough to be short.

This game is not worth 60 dollars. I'd struggle to recommend it at 10 bucks. And I make that assessment without even considering the poor technical aspects of the game.

If you want a fun Sonic-like game, go spend 30 dollars on Spark the Electric Jester 3.

Whether you’re engaging enemies and bosses with the game’s new fun and rewarding combat system, or exploring one of the many many short obstacle course built into the open zone there is something to do around every corner. The cyberspace stages are the perfect way to break up the open zone gameplay and sonic back to his roots with fun well designed linear stages all with multiple challenges to tackle. I won’t get into spoilers but the major boss encounters are the best encounters not only on this game but the entire sonic series as a whole, the game is almost worth it for them alone. The music is all absolutely steller and enhances the mood perfectly at any given time. The story is a fun and intriguing mystery that lets sonic and friends reflect on their pasts and help each other get through such a dire situation. The writing is a huge step up from previous games and allows the characters to feel like actual characters and not just mouthpieces to say lame jokes. There are minor technical issues such as pop-in but other then that the game runs smoothly and I never ran into a single glitch prior to obtaining the platinum trophy. After playing it, I can say that it's a lot like Pokemon Legends Arceus in the sense that it's a great idea and a great new direction for the series, but flawed by bizarre design choices and a SEVERE lack of polish. It's not fun to be running along and into a bumper and just... fall through it like it doesn't exist and have to start a segment over. Or press the boost button and just go flying off the stage. Combat is sadly pretty trivial even on hard, as all moves are WAY overpowered-- if you aren't just mashing the basic combo, you can just spam any other move, like Sonic Boom, and enemies will go down in seconds, completely unable to touch you. And what's up with the parry? If timing doesn't matter at all how is it fun to use? It makes it essentially a "hold this to win" button.
Fluidly chaining together between rails and springs in the open world, from one "section" to the next, is very satisfying and fun (when it works and the jank doesn't ruin your run), but sometimes you're sent flying off in places you didn't expect, leaving you asking "wait where am I, where did I go"?
Lastly, I like the idea of the collectibles. Beat bosses in the overworld to beat boost formula stages to get chaos emeralds. However, most collectibles become almost instantly worthless as you can just find keys and cogs randomly by defeating basic enemies or doing cycloop circles. Why bother playing the actual levels if the game just dumps keys on me constantly? Or why even play ANY of the game if I can just spend a few minutes fishing for all the resources I need? The collectables really should only come from the bosses, cyberspace levels and little platforming sections in the world. No digging treasure and getting a dozen memory tokens or a key, no one-shotting a grunt with a homing attack to get a cog... make me PLAY THE GAME to earn the rewards.
Even with these flaws I had a ton of fun playing this game. I really hope the rough edges get smoothed out with the next release, the future has potential for sure.

But with all the pre-release development we got, Sonic Frontiers is now available in all major platforms, and let me tell you people still questioning yourselves of you should give it a chance: ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY I SPENT.

Sonic Frontiers is, in my opinion, THE BEST Sonic game ever (yep I said it, even better than SA2). Now that I have your attention, lets talk about this piece of art, shall we ?

The gameplay is pure Sonic platforming and intense Hack n Slash action: Sonic feels so great to control in these wide open zones (HOLY GUACAMOLE THESE MAPS ARE HUGE) where he fits right in, its perfect. His movements are clean and very fluid, and the skill tree (which you can unlock fairly easily) is a fun and very welcomed novelty in the series. The moves you unlock opens you to a wide range of insane combos you can do, its just amazingly fun I cant get enough of it.

Second of all are the enemies: WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR THESE ARE! Finally, challenging npcs that actually want to kill you, all they want is you to suffer and they deliver it (well not Dark Souls level of suffering but you get it lol). Theres the small fries that show up alone or in groups, they die in 1 hit usually, the average enemies, again, alone or in groups, but they require some quick combos to get rid of, and the minibosses, which are comparable to actual bosses in previous sonic games (theyre even better in most cases). And then theres the actual Bosses, this is a spoiler free review so all I can say is you better have a few extra pairs of underwear ready, especially for the DMC and Bayonetta fans out there (wink lmao). So yea, enemies, badass designs, hella fun, ggwp.

Third of all, the Music, I mean, do I really have to say it? Its Sonic Team Sound were talking about, NAME ONE SONIC GAME WITH NO BANGERS, EVEN FORCES HAD SLAPPING OSTS. Music enjoyers, your ears are in for the best treat.

And last but not least, the story. Again, this is a Spoiler free review so ill give you a glimpse of whats going on here. As from all we got from the pre-release trailer, we understand that the plot involves sonic and his friends looking for the chaos emeralds in the starfall Islands, and there is Sage, who is trying to stop sonic from messing around the place, but it goes even beyond this, like the tip of an iceberg vs the actual size of it. It really feel like it came from the prime sonic era, with adventure, heroes, etc. They gave us back this shonen type of story and it truly is what Sonic is: a shonen hero. Also one more thing, for everyone, especially the veteran sonic fans, you guys are in for one heck of a ride (TRYING TO HOLD MY HYPE)!!!

All in all, Sonic Frontiers is a SMASH HIT and Sonic Team should be really proud of what they just accomplished. Their hard work really paid off, and it shows how they have this special passion for the blue blur, even after some failed attempts over the past decade. I hope they keep working on this track, its a winning one. This game is literally the "Super Mario Odyssey" treatment given to Sonic: there are no low points here, its a new direction in the series full of easter eggs from all the series and Im glad that we live in a timeline where we can experience it.

    10/10, CHEF KISS

I grew up loving Sonic, but I did not grow up with Sonic games. I was first exposed to some random Archie comic I found at a department store, and then I avidly watched Sonic X, played as him nonstop in Brawl, and consumed an unhealthy amount of fan-made sprite animations on Youtube. Later in life I went back and actually played the games, and while it was a bit of a mixed bag, I came back with my love for the franchise unfaltered. This game has quadrupled my love for this stupid blue hedgehog.

It's definitely not perfect (nothing is but you know what I mean) but it is such a huge leap in the right direction that at times it can feel like it is. The disparity between this game and some of Sonic's lower points is incredible. The story is fantastic (thank you Ian Flynn), the combat is fun and satisfying (turn autocombo off) and the exploration makes me fully trust Sonic Team with an Adventure remake. The controls are tight, and can be customized to perfection. I do have some gripes. The Cyberspace levels are genuinely awful to control. It's not that the open-world controls don't translate well, it's just that they control completely differently and Much worse. It's so slow. I found myself skipping Cyberspace whenever possible, which is a shame because I am a fan of the boost games.
While I did love the open world's, I do still wish there was a little more to do in them. Not really the end of the world but some more collectables would've been nice.

This game rocks tho. I sincerely hope the franchise continues in this exact direction. Also the bosses are **** insane and the music bumps please buy this game

god I love this game welcome back sonic! It’s so free flowing and fun, I enjoy the platforming, and the sense of speed you get when you really master it. Boss battles are by far the highlight!!!!

Honestly not sure if these are bots giving it a high score or sonic fans who have snapped because it's been so long since Sonic team put out a decent game, so rating this one as good will make it good, but it is terrible. The gameplay is terribly broken. Physics are broken, the "open zone" is lack luster. The voice acting is awful, the story is awful.

The history is exellent, but the gameplay could be better, but it is a good way for SEGA to recover from it's past.

Although the story lacks meat and the cyberspace stages border on terrible, Sonic Frontiers features fantastic controls, extraordinary bosses, and a good soundtrack, coupled with Ian Flynn's fantastic characterization for these well known characters.

genuinely some of the most fun I've had with a game in ages. strongly recommend. if you're a fan (especially the adventure era) this game will remind you why you liked this series in the first place. if you're new, it might be the perfect game to start with

This is probably the best sonic game in over a decade. After sonic forces sonic team really gave it their all here.
Though frontiers has a really bad pop in issue. I feel the fun gameplay kinda makes it not that much of a problem in the long run.

Combat is boring and repetitive, especially after I've played games like God of War Ragnarock which the combat there is engaging, every fight feels new and refreshing and feels more apart of the world. ESPECIALLY the parry system, far too simple and easy for this game. This would be less of an issue for me if the combat wasn't one of the major selling points of the game that they try to treat as their front part. Hell not even using Ragnarock, another series made by Sega, the Yakuza series, deals with the open world combat aspect FAR better then this game.

The level design is awkward as hell, the first island is a perfect example for me, the floating platforms look like they were made by amateur game designers or something I'd see in like, Project 06's test room, not an official level from a game.

The exploration gets old extremely fast, something like Spider-Man PS4 or Breath of the Wild constantly keeps me engaged with continuously adding new things and challenges to explore that don't feel static and video-gamey.

The control and physics are awkward as hell along with the momentum and it's janky as all hell.

Like Frontiers as a game is just the definition to me of "why play this when you can play insert x game here that has the exact same mechanics but done far better", it's an overall mid game and I think Sega missed the "polish" part of this.

Also the story isn't all that great, it's not bad, but I don't know why it's being treated like the second coming of jesus christ.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just gonna say it here: The game isn't perfect. Sometimes the gameplay is a bit janky, especially on some of the mini-bosses. Cyberspace is a bit weak but nonetheless fun. However, the "true" final boss is a bit underwhelming when you compare it to the other bosses.

However, the gameplay is really fun, the combat is satisfying, the music is a banger, and the story is really good at tying in games of the past, from the beginnings of Sonic to the Dreamcast Era, through into the Dark Ages and the controversial Meta era. Ian Flynn knew what he was doing, and I appreciate that.

I hope the game will be a good basis for future games and is not discarded like other games in the past. I do also hope for some DLC or a sequel in the future to improve some of the worse-off aspects of the game. Open-zone is a new Sonic style that I hope to see continue, and I also hope that Sage gets to return and continue to be an interesting new character.

All Sonic needs now is a greater budget than before and more people to help work on future games. If Sega doesn't do that, they are missing out on what could be Sonic's greater potential.

The physics are a bit different from normal Sonic games, and they're also, to an extent, customizable in the settings. I like them. Definitely have to get used them though.

Voice Acting/Direction, I love it. The characters sound more mature and knowledgeable. There's the occasional odd delivery, but I'm willing to look past it, especially for Roger who was doing a whole new Sonic voice this game.

The music is grand, anything from Lofi to Hard Rock, atmospheric pieces, and more. It's incredibly good.

The writing is fantastic, Ian Flynn did a great job here, and I hope he continues to write for the games.

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
