From the controls, to the music, to the combat, to the story, and to the boss fights, Sonic Frontiers is the best sonic game in a long while and is a blast to play through From beginning to end. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a very enjoyable game to play. My biggest issue being the cyberspace levels feel weird to play often, while not being completely unplayable but definitely need working on. There is also what I've seen so far that the last two islands were actually part of Kronos but split into 2 new islands which is a bit disappointing. but fortunately the main game is a blast. It's fun to just run around and explore the islands and talk to the characters and delve into the lore and story of the game as well as the occasional mention to pass sonic games. The bosses are very fun to fight but the final boss I didn't mind it too much but it definitely wasn't the best. The game definitely should be tried out though, it's pretty addictive. I got a point where I was hunting down mini bosses just for sport. Definitely give it a try, especially ok PC since mods are being made to make the cyberspace levels more fun to play, and hopefully maybe change their aesthetics to have more than just 4 varying locations Expand

Sonic Team finally listened to fans, and the era of childish stories, restrictive gameplay, and unchallenging level design is behind us. This game is a love letter to us, and an apology. The controls are fluid and fun, the maps are huge and interesting to explore, the story is serious and nuanced, and the characters act like themselves again. Thank you, SEGA.

I don’t understand how anyone can like this game. It’s clearly unpolished and full of jank. Any who has played good games with good stories wouldn’t like this. Sonic’s speed is run in a so called open zone yes, but I can do that with any other fangame if I wanted to run around in a empt sandbox with poorly designed enemies.

My only substantial criticism of the game is its ending- it grows very clear that Sonic Team is a group of 50-60 people making a game that should have had much larger staff and a much larger budget. As beyond their control as it is, the last few areas of the game and the final bosses seem to indicate that they ran out of steam, unfortunately. That being said, this game is still incredibly fun, and I will gladly 100% it a second time. Maybe even a third. Expand

Never before has Sonic felt this fun to me. The way he controls captures a sense of speed and handling I didn't think possible given past experience with the various different gameplay styles the series has had. Being able to run around the various islands in this new "open-zone" format left me wanting to explore every nook and cranny as fast as I could. The combat, while nothing ground-breaking as far as industry standards go, led to exhilarating encounters with interesting enemies which is something I can honestly say I never expected out of this franchise. The Cyberspace levels, the classic Zones of the game which, admittedly, I wasn't a fan of at the start of this adventure, quickly made me proud to be a longtime fan of the franchise. Many of the level layouts were ripped from prior titles and because of that it actually became a fun little challenge for myself to see if I could remember which game a particular level layout was from.

The music, as is the case with nearly every game in the franchise, is phenomenal. Sonic has never been a stranger to rock and roll with many of its prior soundtracks being comprised of a mix of "butt rock," and synth-pop, but I don't think I've ever heard any themes that veer this hard into metalcore. The boss themes go HARD. With music composed by Sleeping with Sirens, Dangerkids, Nathan Sharp, and One Ok Rock, this soundtrack leaves you wanting to bang your head as you smack around some gargantuan eldritch abominations.

Yes, I said eldritch abominations. Not the first time the series has dipped into some weird elder god territory, but this may be the best a story of this caliber has ever been handled. The story helmed by Ian Flynn is full to the brim with lore and callbacks and for someone like me, I feel right at home. I feel seen. For the past decade or so, it felt as though Sonic was running away from its past, ignoring established rules and canon, or poking at them in a very meta, mocking kind of way. This game embraces the insanity whole-hog, and served as a reminder of the many reasons why I loved the series, and these characters, as much as I did when I was a kid.

Ultimately, that's how I feel about this game. It makes me feel like a kid again. I feel no shame or guilt over how I feel about this series for the first time in a very, VERY long time. It feels like an old friend has finally come home after losing his way. If you have any interest at all in Sonic Frontiers, I cannot recommend it enough. It left me smiling from ear to ear throughout a majority of my journey. While it may not be a perfect game, it is absolutely a contender for game of the year, in my eyes.

The game final boss feels like a weird design decision, but the rest of the bosses were really good! keep that up! The open zones needs a little bit more of enemies to play with the mini bosses are great! Also I believe the challengers, some are really easy, maybe some platforming would be good, sometimes, they are too generous, specially if you already got hold of the controllers, I suggest Zone-Based challenges example: "bring water to X location for dessert zones" or "get from this lo cation to this location with some platforming". The combat is fun and good, is not something I'd like the focus of a sonic game to be on, but it's still fun. The grinding system gets tedious, but the fishing minigame it's the perfect balance for taking a break and also progressing the game. Exited on how you will improve the format! There are a few negatives, mainly with the pop in and the cyberspace levels. While the cyberspace levels are enjoyable, they are the weakest part of this game as they are based on 4 past stages that fans have seen countless times, so I'd certainly want to see more variety on it. Some may argue that the graphics might not be the greatest, but it does tie back into the pop in issue. If you want less pop in, I recommend playing the Switch version, but if you want 60fps gameplay, then I do recommend PC or PS5 versions.

Overall, very fun and enjoyable game that is very much worth playing.

Open world has tons of stuff to do at every corner and was very fun to explore while gaining collectibles, very much so akin to Odyssey rather than BOTW. Memory Tokens, Purple Coins, Keys, Gears and Emeralds, all are scattered throughout the world and leave a non-linear progression in the game to allow the player to carve their own path towards advancing the story. My only gripe would be is for future games to have more "sonic-y" styled aesthestics for open world akin to Adventure, and allow for more natural ways in the envrionment to show off Sonic's abilities rather than random rails and black climable walls, but for the sake of this games context it makes sense. Sonic's movement is extremely fluid and fun to play around with and using his speed to get to higher areas in different ways is extremely enjoyable, adding to the non-linearity. Cyberspace stages are mixed, while some are fun, others are very clearly reusing design choices that does eventually wear on the repetition of the stages. I would like for more original level designs overall and better controls as Sonic can feel stiff in these levels, both of which i'd like to see take more inspiration from Generations way of handling boost stages. Combat was surpisingly extremely fun, while it is simple I greatly appreciated it and had so much fun getting better at learning the combat system and using Sonic's new arsenal of moves. Bosses and Mini Bosses are the BEST the series has seen in over 20 years, each one is extremely unique with their own gimmicks and patterns to keep you on your toes. I was so satisfied playing all these battles and getting better at them as it only added to my joy of the combat system. The story was excellent and the greatest we have seen since Sonic Adventure 2. The amount of new discoveries and new revelations we had to pre-existing lore combined with new story elements was so intruging and I loved every second of it. By the end I cried at how beautiful it was. I hope Ian Flynn and his Team can return for future mainline games as they were excellent. The OST was as great as always from Sonic games and I commend Ohtani and the sound teams work. Overall, Morio Kishimoto and the rest of Sonic Team have produced a great and satisfying experience that deserves the praise it gets after all their hard work. This was a great step forward for the franchise and I hope future installments build upon it's formula while making it bigger and better. A great start to the new era of Sonic, I only hope to see more! Expand

The final boss was ok but could've been better. The true final boss, only accessible by playing the game on hard mode, would've been amazing if the fight itself was...better. The music is fantastic and the character interactions is one of the best things about this game.

There is pop-in, automated segments where the game literally rips the control from the player's hands, and the combat is shallow. Idk why but I never noticed the pop-in probably more than five times but I felt like it would've been disingenuous to not mention it. The combat is style with little substance but I've never been one to hate that type of combat in games so it was still very enjoyable.

To a casual gamer or person, this game would probably land around the 7-8 mark as it currently is rated by the overall Users' Rating Score and Metascore but I simply had enough fun with this game that I'd be dishonest to not rate it a 9.

The game is far from broken, but the pop-in is not great(even on PS5), and there was some instances of weird collision that resulted in Sonic flinging in some decently hilarious ways. Overall, if this is any indication of what the future of Sonic holds, then my hopes are high! Expand

Sonic Frontiers is a very good game especially fun, what a surprise, is what matters most in a video game, its open area works well and I would say that it is even strangely addictive to do simple objectives to complete the map and progress in the story the biggest problem I see is that reaching the end it starts to get repetitive, which actually is not such a big problem because when you start to feel this the game is over, even so I hope Sonic Team can improve this in the next Sonic games, despite how good it can be it is not free of other faults, it has its details that if they had been polished simply would give a greater value to the game, I mean some animations and the constant pop in, it is not the worst I've seen in a current video game but we all agree that it would be better if it was not there or if it was less noticeable, I also have to mention Cyberspace, I like the idea of short and replayable levels but its controls and physics are really bad, if the team plans to continue with this idea in the next games I would also like it to improve.
I also have another complaint which is that in the first 3 islands the story of the game gets more and more interesting but once you finish Chaos Island is like the game says "sorry but it has to end" and it feels very abrupt and in general the whole final stretch feels rushed or uninspired especially the final boss, maybe this is due to lack of time in the development and I understand it but still it is a flaw that has and must be marked.
things that I liked but that I almost forgot to mention so here it goes quickly
    *great soundtrack
*I completely love the battles against the titans, I would have liked an option to repeat the fights
*the combat is great, it's simple but it's very well thought out, it's also another aspect that I hope will improve in future games
and here ends my review, a very good game, it is really the way forward for Sonic Team they have a solid foundation and can continue to improve
By the way sorry if something is not understood or for any spelling or grammatical errors that I may have I used 100% of my brain power to write this and a little help from the translator

I have never had this much fun exploring!

Now another aspect is the brand new and interesting combat paired with a bunch of varied enemies to fight. While not all of them are fun to fight against, I was always excited to see a new enemy, mainly the mini bosses, to see their cool designs and how they'd fight. I didn't expect much from the combat but it was still quite enjoyable, especially the boss fights in each area.

It's not a game you would play for a deep story or for its intricate mechanics. It's simply a good time, and I had a very good time with it. I certainly can't wait for the Sonic Team to expand and improve on this concept.

Been through thick and thin since 2001, this game made me fall in love with the franchise again.

The islands are all pretty well designed and movement works well. There's some jank because of the mesh collisions, there's definitely some things to overlook, but the Open Zone is a solid 9 for me.
It's comparable to the good open world games like BoTW and Elden Ring, imo.
It's not really fair to call it open world, cause it is indeed an open zone thing, it's one of those things you really have to try in order to understand.
The game controls better than it looks like from videos, mostly because some animations are pretty stiff.
The Cyberspace stages are 50/50, some are extremely lame, the 2D ones specifically, some range from good to OK.
The best ones come from SA2, obviously. The few original ones are okay, I wish they dared more.
The controls in Cyberspace are "fine" in 3D but completely ass in 2D.
Cyberspace is a very small portion of the game nevertheless, and 100% that side took me 40 minutes at most.

The SuperSonic boss fights are the best in the series, hands down, wish there was a boss rush mode.

Overall? Pretty good game, definitely my GOTY. Adventure fans this is for you, kinda.

The way Sonic controls in the open zone has been the best he has felt since Unleashed or the Adventure titles. The combat in this game is very unique and a fun experience, the guardians are very fun to fight, Cyberspace is quite a different experience but once you get used to it, you begin to really into the levels. The boss fights in this game are top notch as well. Giganto, Wyvern, and Knight are all good examples. You fly around as Super Sonic trying to deal damage to these colossus-sized enemies. Although I do think the final boss could’ve been better. I don’t really like the idea of a bullet hell. This game’s soundtrack is probably the best within the series. I’m Here, Undefeatable, and Find your Flame are all good examples. Overall, this game is a very fun experience and I suggest just giving it a shot. Expand

Sure there may be some kinks to iron out like the pop in and such but that's just a minor tid bit that is sure can be fixed. The best part about this game are the titan boss fights. I kid you not I was flabbergasted that Kellin of Sleeping with Sirens was brought into do the vocals for three of the Titan boss fights. It was a surreal experience I could not describe. The story itself is beyond what I have expected from a sonic game and definitely a step up compared to the stories we've been getting for over the last 10 years or so. No offense anyone who like Sonic Colors's style of writing but I think hearing sonic say badly mcnose hair just doesn't do it for me. If there was a few things I would like to say is maybe fix the leveling up system of the Elder Koco since he only raises your speed increase level and ring count by one point. Overall, this game was definitely worth the 70 dollars. I encourage anyone who loves to gave a good time to buy the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do want to talk about the game, but before I do- let me tell you my personal mental state prior. Before this game, I was cold and depressed. Wallowing away in regret as my entire life slipped away from me. Everything I have ever known felt cold and distinct. But then, when I finally got to play Sonic Frontiers… inspiration came to me. My life finally started making sense.

The starfall islands the game houses are vast and wide. They have a myriad of challenges you can complete, and puzzles that are truly puzzling. On top of that, is the usual Sonic gameplay of running, jumping, and boosting your way up rails, ramps, and springs.

But to be honest, the best part about Frontiers is how it excels at bringing to light our deep societal problems. It’s good to know that even an E-rated game such as this can tackle the complex themes of our time so well.

In this game, the great ancients were wiped out by a primal evil: The End, a dark moon set out for destruction. Throughout the entire game, The End tricks Sonic into helping them- saying that they are doing this for the good of Sonic and his friends. But turns out, that was all a lie. In truth, this moon was out to completely annihilate the universe! It tells Sonic that they are inevitable. It will arrive, no matter what Sonic does. And yet, the great Super Sonic, teaming up with the noble Sage, a manmade wonder- stop The End from destroying the world.

This is very clearly an allegory towards the challenging topic of social hierarchy, and its role in today’s world. The pure ancients were unrecognized for years, but they tried to stop The (vile) End from happening. Now, we must know to stop any dark forces that challenge our path- no matter how pure they may present themselves at first. Know, that some are destined to be “The End”. To destroy us all. And just like Super Sonic at the end of Frontiers- we will conquer our enemies.

“Uh, Sonic should’ve died in 2D”

    What about Mario then?

    “Same thing for Mario”

No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

“Image being a kid, he would be bored playing this game”

Are you that kid? Stop self projecting. Why we have to treat Kids like they are stupid? Super Paper Mario was 14 years ago. Do I really have to explain what I’m saying? That game aged like fine wine. Bowser’s Inside Story is another one. And this will do the same because it’s good. It’s so good. Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
