    As someone who played the original RE4 at least 20 times this is definitely the way to remake a game. The only reason for the low rating is that Ashley is a huge downgrade. Her witty commentary and constant heavy breathing are annoying and I personally prefer her having a health bar as opposed to her getting hit and just sitting there asking to get hit again.

    This is a good game, but waiting for a next remake is very long. I have always hated the plot of 4, and it's no different here. Lily Gao is literally THE WORST voice actor to ever voice a character. What the hell is wrong with you Capcom that you allowed her to even voice Ada!? The even WORST thing this costs 60$ dollars!

    This is a remastered game but sold as a remake
    No effort on the script, it couldn't be simpler, the characters we learn nothing new, the dialogues must have been written by a child, the sets are ugly nothing to do with Spain where the adventure takes place

    Overall pretty good, though second part of the game (since castle) is becoming quite repetitive with same arenas of same enemies all the time. Would prefer it to be at least 30-40% shorter.     The most underwhelming is outdated moving control that didn't change since original RE4 game being released and now feels extremely clumsy, especially comparing to TLOU.

    it's what re4 was at the time but with more intense cutscenes and really good interactions. Beautiful graphics and really nice fights. The horror which is more present too and the gore is really there. All the characters are charismatic. Separate ways are indeed missing unfortunately, which I really expected with the game because Leon is great but Ada is too. From the improved acting (yes, even Lily Gao, who brought a newly welcome depth and appropriate edge to Ada Wong), to the incredibly rich and detailed graphics, the smooth-as-glass movements and general game performance, and brilliant additions to the chapters, the reasons to rave about this game just go on and on and on... and on. Honestly, I've found only one, small flaw: it is SERIOUSLY ADDICTIVE. Truly, I might have developed a problem. I can't stop f'ing playing this thing.

    Cheers all around to everyone involved in making this masterpiece and perfect mesh of survival horror and action. I am absolutely beaming with the knowledge that I will be able to play this for years to come to my heart's ultimate content.     Thoughts-
    To see this new version of RE4 taking all of that in its stride with such confidence is, frankly, staggering. It never misses a beat, it perfectly captures the spirit of its source material, and all the while, it also makes meaningful, significant improvements and changes that elevate an already masterful experience to even greater heights.     Didn’t get to play this the first time it was released but glad I was given the opportunity this time around and man what a game!!! Great blend of action, horror and gameplay. Hopefully they remake resident evil 0, resident evil 1 and resident evil code Veronica.

    What can I say? I remember when I was a kid playing RE4 what times and now this version takes me back to those glorious moments. The game is great, the story, the gameplay, the graphics, it's a 10 without hesitation. Best Resident Evil for me

    The red-dot of the original, where your shots go where you aim, has been replaced with a cursor and random bullet deviation - resulting in the frustrating experience of missing constantly where you feel you should have hit.

    At higher levels of play, the reliability of getting stagger animations and learning the game is gone - due to more randomness in the engine as relates to critical hits and whatnot. The tight "learnability" of the original is gone, where you could get good at the game through learning what reactions you'd get from hitting certain body parts and following up with melee attacks. This means that experience translated into performance in a satisfying way. Now, goodness is determines by player age, gaming hardware and a good mouse. It's just a poor, soulless follow up to a gaming great. The developers stood on the shoulders of giants and delivered a mediocre experience.    … Expand

This game became my favorite RE game, even though ive only played 2;3;4;8, but now ive got a motivation to finish them all, but i am 100% sure bon other Resident Evil game will give such perfect experience as RE4 gave me. The reason why i liked this game so much, is first of all a good combination between horror/survival and action, and by that this gave always keep the player interested in what’s happening in there. Also one the key factors why i really liked this game was characters - God , they are badass. Leon, Krauser, Louis, Ada, Osmund Sadler, Ramon Salazar - all of them are extremely charismatic and interesting in their own ways, and yeah Ashley is not that annoying as she was in a past, and at least she has a fascinating look.
    Also ive gotta admit amazing bossfights ( except Del Lago ) and what a great soundtrack they have. The themes of Krauser, Ramon, Sadler are that good, that i can compare them with Fromsofts osts, that says a lot. In the end i don’t have anything bad to say about this game, it was a pure pleasure to play this game, and surprisingly pleasing to obtain platinum trophy in this game. One of the best remakes, and a great game on its own.

Literally my only gripe, if I had to nitpick at worst, is that the game design habit of splashing yellow paint on any interactable object like ladders or barrels kind of broke the immersion for me.     I would agree to an extent, though that's completely subjective. I find it important to highlight however that people tend to forget how much Ashley's dialogue has improved and like to only focus on the negatives when there's far more positives that never get mentioned.

    Honestly that's literally the only downside I can possibly even think of, which is very remarkable, especially with the state of video games nowadays.    … Expand

    RE4 R is a safe, unfinished, inferior re-imagining of one of the greatest games ever made that has unnecessary monetization (day one DLC plus more added after reviews) and doesn't need to exist. However I still really enjoy it and recommend it.

    The crazy level of mainstream praise this game has received is bad for the future of the medium. The dismissal of the original, the claims that the original needed modernizing and that this new version of RE4 is better or on par with the original is awful. I thought video games were a medium deserving respect. Doesn't the gaming community get pissed off anytime someone from TV or film makes an ignorant comment about games. So why are we treating one of our classics like this because there is a shiny new but inferior version out. Could you imagine this happening to a classic film, TV show, book etc? Are video games disposable toys that we get rid of when new ones come out or are they art?

    The way the original plays is so good. The combination of the way Leon moves/controls, standing your ground, accurate shooting, melee attacks, knife, repositioning when needed and using the environment to your advantage with the way enemies move/attack/behave/react, enemy variety, level design, the weaponry and set pieces just works so damn well. It doesn't have any right to be this good but it is. It is near perfect. This re-imagining takes this gameplay and tries to modernize it, make it more realistic and play similar to other modern 3rd person shooters. In doing so they upset the near perfect balance. So they tried adding new things and re-balancing to get it near perfect again but failed. What we are left with is a game that is good to play but less fun and more frustrating than a game made almost 20 years ago. Nearly every part of the gameplay needs adjusting. But I think with further tweaking it could play different but as good the original.

    The re-imagining does do a better job with the story and lore but loses so much of what made the original special. The characters have more depth now but lose almost everything that made them so entertaining. There is so much cut from this game and none of the changes or additions make up for it. The pacing is also worse. How did this re-imagining drag on longer than the original when it has less content? Why do the merchants side missions and back tracking for treasures feel like unnecessary bloat?

    It does look quite good after turning off lens distortion and chromatic aberration but I still prefer the originals art direction. It runs well too. I only noticed a little jankiness and the frame rate only dipped a little when things got busy in the rain. There was a little pop in too.

    Why was Mercenaries not at launch and why does that mode feel underdone? Why are there little things I need to pay extra for? (Like the original soundtrack) Why have they added more little things to pay for? Are these going to make the game easier? Did they deliberately make the game harder/more frustrating/grindy hoping to push some to buy these? (Please don't buy them). Why wasn't all this at launch during the review window? What dlc is coming and how much are they going to charge for it? Why are so many people just okay with this?

    Why am I already tired of this game while looking forward to continuing to replay the original for another 18 years? It is just such a huge missed opportunity. Capcom took something brilliant and instead of remaking it, building on it, trying to improve it and leaning more into what made it one of the best ever they decided to make it something different. But not different or bold and fresh enough to stand on it's own.

    - This game and the original are not survival horror, stop calling every horror game survival horror. It sucks seeing one of your favourite genres being erased by mislabeling and wilful ignorance.

    - This is a re-imagining not a remake. A remake is the same again but hopefully better. A re-imagining is a reinterpretation which is very familiar but different.

    I'm still giving this game a high 7, even though this has been a pretty negative review, because even an inferior re-imagining of RE4 is still RE4, which is unbelievably good. There's still plenty of fun to be had here, there are some good moments and ideas and it's a pretty polished game.

    So go play the original if you haven't or replay it again if it's been a while. But still check out this new version just don't take the mainstream reviews seriously, keep your expectations reasonable, enjoy it for what it is and it'll be a good time. I paid full price day one and got the Platinum trophy and I don't regret it. 7.8/10    … Expand

    My older brother offered me Resident Evil 4 and told me: "one of the best games of all time" after playing the game on the PS5 console and finishing the campaign I had to play it again because it's really really good this game

The game stays mostly true to the original, but the controls and gameplay are simply perfect, unlike the original. It’s nice to have this run on nearly 60 fps on the PS5, and the game looks incredible. I would have given this a 9 or 10, but they left out the “It” boss fight in the island section, and that was one of my favorite boss fights in the whole franchise. Also, I was hoping they would have expanded on the Island section, but it seems they actually cut some small areas of that last third part of the game. Otherwise, this is easily my top 3 RE games, along with the RE2 remake, and the og RE1.… Expand

    Easily better than the OG and OG was already very very good. Only people who review bomb this, are sad tasteless losers, but their opinion doesn't even matter lol. This metascore proves that most of humanity agrees that this is great remake and improvement on already very good OG.

    Only played the demo when it came out and it made me even more excited for the remake. Will definitely play the full game soon and hopefully play the original Resident Evil 4 in the process!

    I honestly couldn’t imagine how capcom can improve on an all time classic and game design perfection like RE4 but they did the impossible with this remake, and a huge focus on visual upgrades which is really good but to put this remake in the same category as those remakes would be a disservice to the monumental achievement that the developers did with this game.

    The most perfect remake to ever existed. The remake fix probably all of annoying things in the original game. Even though, you’ve played the original re4 I would say that you’ll still get a fresh experience. Most of characters script has been rewritten.     To say this is a rollercoaster ride would do it an injustice. It's simply a perfect videogame. Frustrating in places but there is always a gameplay narrative to overcome to achieve your goal.     2005 original has always been one of my favorite games, but it was never perfect. Even most amazing games can have flaws and so did RE4. Ashley in OG was absolutely awful, remake improves her in every way. Most boss fights are better in remake. Movement is better in remake. Obviously graphics and so on. This is one of the best remakes ever made.

    Original was one of the best games of 2000s and one of the best games ever made, but for obvious reasons it is very much outdated by modern standards in 2023. This great remake improves on pretty much all the shortcomings of the Original and is now the best version of RE4!

    Resident Evil 4 Remake is 100% GOTY of 2023 and huge improvement on already great original! I'm also glad that Metacritic FINALLY deleted those fake 0/10 reviews. Phenomenal work Capcom!!!

    The greatest game of all time has been reimagined into the greatest game of all time. It is adapted well and the game mechanics are nice a fluid. You’ll beat the game and immediately want to replay.

    This game does the first half better than the original, but falters in the second half. The second half was much better in the original. Serious lack of main boss character development is probably this games biggest flaw (along with some iffy RNG in second half) still a great game

    Very good remake, better than original, is more scary and the remake has a good stealth mechanics which makes the game more strategy and much more tension, also castle design is a plus.

    It's not a bad game, but I was expecting more than this. My first play through was the hardcore mode and it was so difficult. Don't get fooled, play the standard mode first, even if you have played the original. Capcom could've tune down the action a bit and not copy it from the original, and it gets even worse now.     Even if the game is inferior to the original, ( the original is the best game of all time), I don't understand the 0/10 in mass. It's completely unfair. Fans who lowered the rating, shame on you frankly.

    9/10 masterpiece, opinion of a fan of RE4 since 2005 ( and of the series since 1996 )

    The interesting story and atmosphere of the game will attract you well from the first minutes, and the graphics above it will give you the feeling that this version is more than a remake version. Everything is as good as the original version. Return to The roots of this series can be seen well in this remake version.

    One of the best remakes of all time, yes even better than Dead Space and RE1R. Overall, it's one of the best games Capcom has ever made and they will have difficult time with their next project, because it has to be (at least) same level of quality as RE4R. Top tier level of game making, better than most modern studios. More of this please!

    The story of the game is a mediocre story, the gameplay is very enjoyable and attractive, in terms of visuals, it is equal to Cross Gen 2023 games and has a stunning visual, the main boss fights are very similar to each other. The sound design of the game is wonderful, the enemies have a good variety and only one new type of enemy has been added to the remake compared to the original version.

    Resident Evil 4 Remake not only does right by its original source of inspiration, but it also sets a high bar for what modern day remakes can be. All components of the story have been finetuned into a more well-thought out package, and that’s before mentioning the game’s full use of today’s graphical prowess to deliver a more terrifying interpretation of rural Spain. The core gameplay also retains what made it so great back in the day, but with modern amenities such as a parrying system, quick-select for weapons and the ability to run. And despite the new improvements, the increased aggressiveness of the enemies ensures that the game never feels like a cakewalk. I don’t know who still needs to be convinced at this point, but Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece that I cannot recommend enough.
