Overall it holds together very well, and even though I played the whole game in two days with minimal sleep, I didn't even think about taking a break for a while. [Issue#327]

Resident Evil 4 Remake not only does right by its original source of inspiration, but it also sets a high bar for what modern day remakes can be. All components of the story have been finetuned into a more well-thought out package, and that’s before mentioning the game’s full use of today’s graphical prowess to deliver a more terrifying interpretation of rural Spain. The core gameplay also retains what made it so great back in the day, but with modern amenities such as a parrying system, quick-select for weapons and the ability to run. And despite the new improvements, the increased aggressiveness of the enemies ensures that the game never feels like a cakewalk. I don’t know who still needs to be convinced at this point, but Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece that I cannot recommend enough.

Another box ticked on the list. After recent remakes of Resident evil 2 and 3, it was time for Capcom to give the fourth installment in their acclaimed game series a makeover. The bar was set high, as 2005's Resident Evil 4 is considered by many to be the best survival horror game ever. Contrary to what the crosses on the list suggested, they did not deliver a tire job but a new masterpiece.

Almost everything here builds on what came before, taking it to new heights – and when it doesn’t, it presents what was already loved with an enhancing lick of paint. This is still a more action-packed, linear Resi than, say, the second game (this is chapter-based), but it respects the source material while knowing when it needs to one-up it. The boss fights are much better (some of the best in the series); Ashley is a better companion (and when you briefly play as her it has much more depth); and the structure hangs together far better both narratively and environmentally. Underpinning it all is a fantastic combat system that re-crowns Resi as third-person action- horror royalty. [Issue#26, p.70]

For RE4 newcomers, it’s a fun game that turns up the action of the Resident Evil 2 remake and has a similar inventory to Resident Evil Village. To those that played the original in 2005 however, it’s a nostalgic love letter that you can tell was made with care, and respect to the original.

The original Resident Evil 4 is a game that truly managed to stand the test of time, and became something that people are drawn back to even almost 25 years later. And if anything could be said about this new version of Resident Evil 4, it sure seems like people will be playing the remake after another 25 years from now on.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a masterclass in modernizing a tried and true classic game. Though not without faults, they are so few as to be insignificant to the overall experience. Every aspect of the game has been rebuilt in order to make the time spent as Leon Kennedy an utter joy. With a riveting story, rewarding gameplay, and gorgeous design, it is a masterpiece in every sense.

One glitch aside, the Resident Evil 4 remake is a ten. It’s amazing and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m not sure what’s better, Leon’s one liners or everything else about the game. It’s amazing, I will die on this hill and you need to play this.

That a Resident Evil 4 remake is expectedly brilliant is a tough stick to beat it with. But while it might not have that extraordinary sense of upgrade that Resident Evil 2 did, it is important to realise what it represents. Resi 4 was the main driver of the third-person action revolution - the moderniser-in-chief. That its influence has come full circle into its own remake should be no surprise. What does shock, perhaps, is that even after all these years and all its myriad versions is that Resident Evil 4 still hasn’t been bettered. A smartly-executed upgrade has only thrown that into sharper focus. And, particularly for those that haven’t played it before, this is as essential as video games get.

As I mentioned earlier, the reply value for Resident Evil 4 is through the roof. Knowing how much time I put into Village, which has a fraction of the content here, there is plenty of fun and horror to be experienced. My hope is that many gamers can experience the remake on their own as I did, and have that feeling of playing it for the first time. As of now, Resident Evil 4 remake has officially dethroned Dead Space has as my Game of the Year.

More than just another port or lazy remake, this version of Resident Evil 4 is everything you could ask for. It looks beautiful, but keeps its original feel. It has improvements that modernise yet don’t detract and, most importantly, is just as much fun now as it was back in 2005. A must-have for both series fan and latecomers.

Resident Evil 4 more than lives up to the legacy of the original game that released almost two decades ago. Combat is dramatically improved thanks to smoother controls, more threatening enemy behavior, and most importantly, the new knife mechanics. Treasure hunting has been rebalanced to highlight difficult decisions regarding resource management. Optional side quests incentivize risk vs. reward, while certain boss fights have been dramatically improved. Capcom continues their winning streak with an absolute masterclass in survival horror.

The continuing string of successful Resident Evil Remakes makes me hopeful for the future, too. I had the time of my life throughout my 20 hour Hardcore playthrough and immediately started up a New Game+ run on Professional mode to see how well I could put all the lessons I learned throughout the game to the test. It has exceeded my high expectations across the board, and it represents Capcom’s best-ever work on the series. Normally I'd still find time to nitpick some minor annoyance or under baked section, but I just don't think games get much better than this.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is a remarkable achievement that walks the fine line between action and horror, appealing to both old and new fans of the series. Capcom has kept the original’s essence and expanded on it with beautiful and detailed environments, expanded gameplay, and deeper character development. While the absence of Mercenaries Mode and Ada’s storylines at launch is disappointing, the overall experience of the main game more than compensates for this. Resident Evil 4 remake is an exceptional example of how to reimagine a beloved classic properly, and it is undeniably a must-play for both horror and action fans alike.

Nearly 20 years later, Resident Evil 4 is just as much of a masterpiece today as it was in 2005. Capcom has faithfully remade a genuine classic by bringing it into the modern age and kitting it out with new content, tremendous combat, and striking visuals. What was there before was already enough to consider Resident Evil 4 one of the best games of all time, but now it earns that title in 2023 off the back of better environments and sublime action. This is Resident Evil at its absolute pinnacle; an utterly outstanding experience that will live long in the hearts of longtime fans while inducting a whole new generation of supporters.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a more mature and darker take on Leon’s Euro Trip that constantly plays with your expectations and prior knowledge. The core narrative stays true to the original, but it's not afraid to make some significant changes, while the new gameplay flow lends itself brilliantly for repeated runs for specific challenges that I'm already planning. I'm eagerly awaiting the Mercenaries mode as the hard hitting combat should be perfect for high score chasing, but in the meantime Leon is about to have a bad day all over again.

In 2005, Resident Evil 4 set a new standard in the gaming industry. And now, almost 20 years later, it has become a technical masterpiece as well. The remake is even better than we thought it would be - the best one in the series by far. The new Resident Evil 4 gives us a perfect balance between action, survival horror and jump scares. It's definitely one of the early contenders to the 2023 GOTY Awards.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has what it takes to be our favorite action game of 2023. While it doesn't have the industry impact that RE 4 did, and it doesn't rewrite how Remakes should be (like RE 2 did), it's an excellent game, which deserves to be appreciated by everyone, whether or not they are lovers of the franchise. The bestiary of creatures, its action-packed story, and its rich, action-packed world make so many improvements over the original that it's well worth a ticket to revisit this darker-than-ever universe.

In a generation where we get remakes one after the other, it's hard to think of a remake that really reinvented itself to the point where it felt almost completely new. No longer do we need to look at Resident Evil 4 as a nostalgic memory, it is here, freshly new and almost any complaint I have on it is just a nitpick. One of the best remakes Capcom - and anyone else for that matter - ever did.

Capcom has once again succeeded in recreating a masterpiece in a manner that faithfully captures the spirit of the original while also evoking new emotions that challenge expectations. This remake does far more than simply recreate the past; it is an excellent reinvention. Capcom has raised the bar for what is expected of a remake while simultaneously preserving an enviable legacy. Without a doubt, Resident Evil 4 remains the experience that defined genres and stands as one of the greatest games of all time.

Resident Evil 4 Remake does a hell of a job arguing why a video game classic needed a remake. It straddles the line between loyalty to the original and providing a fresh experience better than even Resident Evil 2 Remake did. Pretty much every new gameplay mechanic and design choice leads to a more engaging and enjoyable game. I can't say that it replaces the original, but it's a damn fine companion, and most people wanting to experience RE4 for the first time will likely gravitate to the remake. Either way, it is a must-play for Resident Evil fans, and RE4 Remake is already a strong contender for one of the best games of the year.

Capcom has done it again. After delighting us with the way in which they brought Resident Evil 2 and 3 back, they manage to do justice to the legend that Resident Evil 4 represents, which was undoubtedly a much more important challenge if you consider that this is a more modern game.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is about everything I could've wanted. But importantly, it doesn't overwrite its predecessor. If anything, this new version reinforces why the original Resident Evil 4 is a game people should still seek out, play, or at least watch and learn about. But as a love letter to one of the greatest games of all time, as a new historical artifact that reinforces why the source material was so landmark in the first place, this new trek through the Spanish countryside is as good as it gets and makes a great game that much better.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a masterclass in action-horror. The game not only maintains the spirit and gripping gameplay of the original, but expands on it with some meaningful mechanics and fleshes out areas that were previously lacking. Resident Evil 4 Remake manages to maintain the spirit of the original but gives it a huge graphic improvement and changes to the gameplay that feel like a great success. This new remake is darker and more scary than the original Resident Evil 4. It is a fantastic take on a classic, improving on it in many key areas like storytelling, gameplay mechanics and challenge level, not to mention implementing cutting-edge audio-visual technologies. However, it is not perfect, there are some technical issues like clipping and the game can feel too dark at times, the rain looks very bad as well, though Capcom promised a patch to improve the effect.

There’s a captivating and unsettling aura that enshrouds the familiar trek through the claustrophobic European village. Although Resident Evil 4 remains true to its roots with some cringy dialogue, Capcom alters several elements to improve the overall experience. Since 2005, many developers set out to emulate Resident Evil 4's frenetic pacing and bombast. But nothing felt quite like it. So perhaps it's fitting that, all these years later, Capcom turned out to be the only company that could fully re-bottle that magic.

The remake of Resident Evil 4 is yet another demonstration of a Capcom back with arrogance in a state of grace. After the previous works that left no doubts about the quality of the management and the power of the new direction undertaken, the delicate operation - due to the importance of the game in question - succeeds perfectly and gives new light to a timeless masterpiece, which boasts numerous improvements and eliminates those out of place elements that have lost their polish over time. Deadpool would call it "bigger, better and badass-ier"! The remake of Resident Evil 4 improves the original game in all respects by expanding its scope, modifying its times and increasing its power and smoothing out almost all its defects. Capcom once again proves to be the queen of action-packed remakes, explosions, parasites and deformed monsters.

The story of the game is a mediocre story, the gameplay is very enjoyable and attractive, in terms of visuals, it is equal to Cross Gen 2023 games and has a stunning visual, the main boss fights are very similar to each other. But as someone getting their first taste of Leon’s encounter with Los Illuminados in this latest release, Resident Evil 4 hits every mark: a finely-tuned balance between action and survival horror, both tense and exciting, with an intriguing story and a degree of craftsmanship that few other third-person shooters can match.

Resident Evil 4 rips you right back to 2005 and reminds you how special games can be. A remake done right, this release amplifies the game’s strengths and obfuscates its weaknesses, making for a superb and modern take on a classic. Whilst further improvements could have been made, the results still speak for themselves, as Leon and Ashley’s journey becomes immortalised with contemporary gameplay and visuals that maintain respect for the original release.

The Resident Evil 4 remake feels like something made by a big fan of the original, but one who wasn’t afraid to switch things up a bit.

While Resident Evil 4 is a remake, it stays true to the core of the original. The revamped gameplay, additional and expanded plot beats, and optional activities only add more depth and ease of play to an already fantastic game that already knew how to scare its players.

It may have been sold on seemingly every platform on the planet, but finally we have a proper remake to the 2005 classic. Every square inch of Resident Evil 4 has been remade with incredible detail. There’s new side quests to take care of, such as mini-boss fights, and optional backtracking to open up the three major areas, allowing each to feel lived in.

Ultimately, this is pretty much everything you’d expect of a modern day remake of Resident Evil 4. The story has been renewed to tie it into the other games in the series with more panache, and the gameplay has been updated. It doesn’t feel as revolutionary as the original did way back in 2005, but that’s to be expected. And while we sometimes felt frustrated after taking a health bar-demolishing attack with little sense of how we should have avoided it, it just made us keen to play through the game again to get better. And that speaks of the game’s quality: warts and all, once you step into the boots of Leon Kennedy, there’s not much else that delivers the same thrills.

This remake of Resident Evil 4 is an homage to a classic, very respectful with it (maybe a bit too much respectful). It´s a terrific action game, but we miss some of the braveness Capcom had for the Resident Evil 2 remake.

A very conservative, but also very successful remake of a genre classic that every horror game lover should experience. If you once missed this milestone, you don't have to look back, the new version perfectly represents it and in a modern guise awakens the same feelings as the original once did.

Capcom has succeeded in delivering the Resident Evil 4 version that all fans have been dreaming of. The Resident Evil 4 remake keeps what made the original so good while significantly elevating the story with horror elements, the presentation with cutting-edge visuals and performance, and the gameplay with many welcome quality-of-life improvements. While there are some small niggles that I would have loved to see perfected, this remake exceeds expectations, perfectly balancing the action with the horror and cementing Resident Evil 4 as my favorite game in the series.

Even without its extra game modes, the Resident Evil 4 remake is still phenomenal. It offers nonstop visceral combat and clever changes that help it feel both new and familiar at the same time. The fact that the Resident Evil 4 remake is not as content-complete as previous iterations of the game hurt it, but what's there is still so good that most will be able to forgive it.

No doubt: Resident Evil 4 Remake is simply an excellent horror action game and Capcom proves, for the umpteenth time, its ability to produce a controlled adventure with an exemplary finish. The basics of the original game couldn't be more solid, but the firm has been able to modernize the whole thing to make the adventure more intense, deeper in its game systems and even more thrilling. Was a remake necessary? Maybe not, but impossible to spit on this impressive version, which knows how to honor the original material as well as to bring it a rejuvenation that is ultimately very relevant. Finally, if we have a mad desire to finish Resident Evil 4 as soon as possible, it is to start it again immediately.

Exciting, recognizable and modern, Resident Evil 4 is the example of how to make a remake. The team directed by Yasuhiro Anpo has managed to preserve the spirit of the source material, reintroducing memorable sections, spine-chilling settings and an iconic bestiary with few rivals. However, the whole adventure has undergone changes of various nature and extent, sometimes more showy, sometimes more subtle, but not insignificant for this. Leon's investigation in Europe pushes the accelerator on the action dynamics but without betraying the survival horror cornerstones of the series, also thanks to the work previously done by Capcom on the second chapter. Thanks to these attentions, the comparisons with the abominations of the Illuminados have maintained the right amount of tension and the lugubrious atmospheres of some scenarios have been further enhanced. Always in line with the world of B-movies, even the plot now enjoys greater solidity, testifying to a process of updating the experience that has left nothing to chance. A missed opportunity and small imperfections, therefore, have in no way managed to reduce the pleasantness of what has been confirmed as an unmissable appointment for fans of the series and the reference genre.

Even if there's a part or two in the remake that could've been handled better, replayability is a core part of a Resident Evil game's success, and Resident Evil 4 is no exception. It should be a promising sign then that as soon as credits rolled, the next logical step was to look through the new challenges at hand and plan out the next playthrough. Costumes, new weapons, and challenges both self-imposed and presented by the game are incentives that bolster Resident Evil's arcade-y feel and give the player an excuse for another run, but even if they were absent, the Resident Evil 4 remake offers enough to justify countless runs once more.

I’m thankful for the cosmic coincidence that put a Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 remake just months apart from one another. Both projects show two valid, but completely different paths forward for game remakes. Dead Space just preserves the original, faithfully communicating what it was like playing it in 2008. As a counterpoint, Resident Evil 4 shows the value of careful reimagination. It isn’t just in conversation with the 2005 version, but with the two decades worth of games that sprung from it. It’s the past, present, and future of action-horror rolled up into an instant classic that stands side by side with its predecessor.

Resident Evil 4 Remake successfully modernizes one of the most significant sequels in the series. As a completely new game based on the legendary release from 2005, it surpasses all previous Capcom remake efforts in terms of authenticity and preservation of the atmosphere of the original with just enough novelty to be completely fresh and fun even for the players who have double digits playthroughs of the OG Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 is simply one of the best remakes out there. It doesn’t only modernize the original game, but also gives the player more ways to tackle combat. The updated knife combat in particular adds a whole new layer of fun. The graphics and sound are of high quality, and even the story moments and characters that were lacking in the original have been improved. Resident Evil 4 remains a divisive entry in the series as it caters to fans of survival horror and action within a well-crafted gaming experience. The updated narrative, by far, makes this a solid entry as it fills in plot holes and provides character growth that wasn't present before. The atmosphere and level design only enhance the enjoyment, but the popcorn action structure of the final area hurts the overall pacing. Still, this is undeniably a stellar remake of an already fantastic game.

Resident Evil 4 takes everything that was good about the original game and puts it in a shiny new look. The end result is just as action-packed as before, just a little more creepy and, above all, much, much more beautiful. Despite that, the game doesn't really innovate anywhere, making it unlikely that this remake will have the same impact as its illustrious predecessor.

Resident Evil 4 was the ultimate test of Capcom’s remake skills, and unfortunately, they buckled a bit under the pressure. The game suffers from minor mechanical issues and doesn’t reinvent or elevate the original material as boldly as some might have hoped it would. That said, Capcom hasn’t broken anything either as this is still a fun, inventive thrill ride that has been brought up to modern technical standards in striking fashion. The new Resident Evil 4 is well worth it for fans of the series, just keep your hopes slightly in check and you won’t be spin-kicked by inflated expectations.

Although Resident Evil 4 is a superb remake, it still exists in the shadow of what made the original so important. However, the parry system stands out as the most welcome change to the largely familiar proceedings. Again though, I really must stress that this is a great game. It’s more serious, and suffers in comparison as a result, but its wealth of additional content, its few minor adjustments to an already terrific combat system, and the sheer excuse to enjoy Resident Evil 4 in another way makes this is a worthy title indeed.

Resident Evil 4 Remake looks great on PS5, plays smoothly even with fancy hair effects turned on, has very few glitches, and is still a lengthy game that somehow gives you the urge to replay it as soon as it's over. It feels three times as large as the Resident Evil 3 remake, and is absolutely deserving of praise. It's also not as silly, not as unique, and not as necessary as the original. Resident Evil, RE2, and RE3 all benefited from an increase in graphical fidelity and modern controls. Resident Evil 4 didn't need it. Nor will RE5. Or RE6. Enough is enough, Capcom. Please stop.

But perhaps the greatest compliment we can pay to Capcom is that the players who don't have the original permanently branded on their memories and their thumbs will merely have to settle for a supremely varied and expertly paced action game - one that doesn't quite supplant, but makes a fascinating companion piece to, one of the greats. It established the third person run-and-gun gameplay you’ll recognise in many a game nowadays and totally reinvented the series. Subtle tweaks have been made to boss fights and streamline the pacing in this revamp. It makes this a must-buy for Resident Evil fans. The beloved highlight of the Resident Evil franchise returns in a form that makes it even easier to love. Capcom did a great job with the remake and it shouldn’t be hard for new players to understand why RE4 is revered by the fans of the series and considered one of the greatest achievements in the genre. After a 16-hour initial playthrough on Standard difficulty, and a New Game+ run on Hardcore, I can happily say that Resident Evil 4 has benefited hugely from the remake treatment. The visuals are superb. The sound design is exquisite. The character redesigns are fresh yet retain the charms of the classic models. Most impressively, though, the 2023 game plays on your knowledge of the previous iteration, punishing and pleasing you in equal measure.

Back in 2005, I liked Resident Evil 4, but I didn’t love it. The remake hasn’t changed that. Unlike the Resident Evil 2 remake, which was revolutionary, Resident Evil 4’s glow-up is more of a faithful recreation rather than an overhaul. It changes just enough that, if you loved the original, I can’t guarantee this will leave you unperturbed. Meanwhile, if you didn’t like its first iteration, it’s not impossible that this will change your mind. The best I can say is that it is an earnest effort at recapturing the magic, and it’s worth checking out. It remains, as it always was, maddeningly inconsistent.

Not only does it pay homage to the 2005 classic very well, but it refines many situations and modernizes them to add more tension. One of the best remakes I've ever played, and also one of the best Resident Evil. [Recommended]

I had developed a distaste for the original RE4 because it led the series down a path that took horror out of the franchise. The remake revitalized my fondness for the game, taking me back to 2005, when I first played the original. Back then, seeing a game play so differently from the older Resident Evil titles was mind-blowing. Now this remake creating a true horror vibe with interesting characters is giving me a lot of that same joy.

Keeping what works while reimagining what doesn't, this is about as good as remakes get. [Eurogamer Recommended]
  4. Mar 17, 2023
For all of the rough edges that it smooths over, RE4 pulls off the same trick that RE2 did in 2019, making a groundbreaking but now dated game feel brand-new again. But after four Resident Evil games in as many years, even the current incarnations of the franchise are starting to feel a bit familiar — there are hints of the cookie-cutter mold that Kobayashi set out to shrug off more than 20 years ago, even in Capcom’s slick and gorgeously produced remakes. This latest one is no anomaly.
  5. Mar 17, 2023
Let’s be clear: Resident Evil 4 (2023) is not a revolutionary game. There’s nothing in its high-octane run through the Spanish countryside that we haven’t seen before, sometimes literally—and so it’s always going to pale a little bit in comparison to the gleefully creative original. But it is an impeccably refined game (and, yeah, that is a somewhat odd thing to say about a game where man-sized bugs can puke acid down your throat). It has been tweaked and tuned down to the atom to satisfy, to propel, to delight. From its opening moments to its final cutscenes, it delivers fun with a consistency that sometimes even manages to outshine its source material; we might miss the goofiest moments, but Resident Evil 4 (2023) proves that sometimes a little maturity can be a very good thing.
  6. Mar 17, 2023
When Resident Evil 4 first came out, it was a game unlike anything Capcom had made before. And it turns out that, almost 20 years later, it’s still as refreshing as ever — even if it’s yet another remake.
  7. Mar 17, 2023
This remake is a celebration of the past, and does not view it, and what hindsight often does to it, with contempt. It stands on the shoulders of a gaming masterpiece, and tries to climb a little higher.

What the hell is wrong with you capcom that you allowed her to even voice AdaLily Gao is the worse Voice actor to ever voice a character. What the hell is wrong with you capcom that you allowed her to even voice Ada wong. This is Ada wong. You know the one Sally cahill and jolene anderson two of the best to voice Ada wong. Why was Jolene Anderson Replaced!!! Why!!! Do you know how mismatched Ada looks in the Remake. It’s so bad. It really shows in the game how bad it is. Her performance is flat monotone and soulless. If you guys got adas japanese voice to reprise her role why wasn’t jolene not asked back. Have some consistency capcom. I’m shelling out 75 dollars for your game i expect for it to be Great. Not subpar and thats putting it lightly. Lily gao should never voice ada wong again. Who in the right mind decided she was the best VA to voice her? There was no need to replace Jolene Anderson! No need at all it’s an unwanted change. Not only that You guys cut content for seperate ways and assignment ada not to mention mercenaries isn’t even out on Day one. Is it because you guys know the Voice acting is Bad for Ada wong. Truly you guys do know deep down how bad lily gao is. At this point i don’t care to purchase the DLC you guys have planned unless she’s replaced. I’ll decide with my wallet what I’ll buy. It definetly wont be anything that’s attached to lily gao because she has no talent. None whatsoever. Id shell out money for a Voice pack of jolene anderson or sally cahill. Because that’s how bad the VA is. It’s horrible. That’s how upset I am that you at capcom don’t value your VA’s. Do better capcom!! We Ada fans are furious and disappointed. To spend 75 dollars on a game should be great in every aspect. Not just Gameplay. We know it’s not the Gameplay. Its why we all bought it. But that’s no excuse. But the fact of the matter is Everyone sounds like they are suppose to. EVERYONE EXCEPT ADA WONG. LILY GAO SHOULD NEVER VOICE ADA WONG AGAIN!!! PAY YOUR VOICE ACTORS WHAT THEY ARE WORTH UNION OR NOT!!! There’s no excuse for not bringing back Jolene Anderson who voiced Ada in Re2 Remake! NO EXCUSE Full Review »

A lot of things worried me about this game when it was first announced and a lot of those worries were basically confirmed after playing it. IA lot of things worried me about this game when it was first announced and a lot of those worries were basically confirmed after playing it. I love the original RE4 and it’s fair to say that most people will still feel that this remake doesn’t replace the og no matter how shiny it looks. The issue is that capcom made so many mistakes with this game instead of learning from what the original did so well.
Leon controls horrible in this. Just the movement and especially the gun aiming is awful. Purposely unstable to “enhance the horror” of not being able to properly aim. Leon is supposed to be a professional so why is he a wobbly mess? The game even goes further to make this a bigger point in this one compared to the og that Leon went thru a ton of training since RE2 but nope, he can’t aim now. The original felt like the movement and aiming was built around the player so you’d always be in control of the situation, now it’s built around the world and there is no controlling the situation. The knife is a lazy crutch for the devs to claim they added something new and interesting in the game. It works well when it does but it felt like that rarely ever happens. The pacing is awful. The original had so much great dialogue and fun cutscenes that practically got chopped to bits or changed for the worst. Example, isn’t it great how you don’t even get to kill the first villager in the first house at the beginning of the game? Now a cutscene kills him for you. Go down to the basement and kill another and they spoil the later reveal that the las plagas are in their heads. Why? It was such a cool moment in the original when they first started having their heads burst open and the remake devs couldn’t contain themselves. The third act of the remake is worse than the original and longer, while also removing a ton of enemies from the original. Shooting the lake is worse because they don’t know how to blend real time events and instead awkwardly cut to a cutscene. Cutting the fight with U3, the laser rooms, making annoying sidequests. It’s a much bumpier road than the smooth pace of the original.
The characters are pretty much all worse except Ashley but there wasn’t too much they could change with her except making her bust small and no upskirt to fit with the sensitive times of today especially in an M rated game. Leon is a nervous wreck and talks too much now. Constant Marvel quips during fights are not funny or cool. For as much as people love meme-ing Leon of the original, he only made jokes a couple times throughout the game. The rest of the time he was pretty cool headed about everything. Saddler has a much smaller presence in the game which is a loss and they changed his voice for the worse. He’s not a fun villain anymore, now he’s Bowser from the 90’s Mario Bros movie with Voldemorts voice. Ada is a complete trainwreck, that’s all I need to say. Look up a youtube video of any of her cutscenes and you’ll understand. Luis is uglier and they really ruined his ending. Salazar’s new design is awful. On top of all this they gutted all the conversations on Leon’s radio. But isn’t it cool you get trophies dropping memberberries on some of those radio conversations? No, it’s not.
The big cheese has a stupid hat, and looks genuinely less scary than the original and more like a big idiot so I don’t understand what happened there. The merchant talks way too much and he doesn’t sound nearly as good as the original guy. Do I even mention how they put in new costumes that all look awful with only a select few being carried over from the original? Of course no white shirt Ashley because that would be offensive and would upset game journalists.
I’m not happy at all with this game but I’m also glad the original still isn’t replaceable. I don’t like where capcom is going with the Resident Evil franchise since 7 even though I liked it for what it was. It seems like they’re taking it in a very bland and modern day hollywood direction instead of trying to be innovative or creative. If they had put this energy into making a new RE instead of remaking 4, I think I would have liked it more. Now it just seems like an easy cashgrab. Especially true since based of how they end RE4 remake we may not even get a remake of the game that deserves it, Code Veronica, or even RE5 but that game also doesn't need a remake. Just not happy with where things look like they’re going for a series I once loved.
