First of all I have to say that I consider the original RE4 a masterpiece and the best video game ever made and a remake of this game was going to be a task doomed to disappoint in some ways which this game indeed did. At the same time I enjoyed this game a lot (mainly because it felt fresh and new) and I see improvements here and there over the original that I would miss playing it again.

Before remaking a beast of a game which is RE4 you would first have to understand what made it so special in the first place and how it interprets horror because the game does it differently than it's predecessors. In some degree the devs of RE4R did but in a lot of points they failed to see the brilliance in some things that may not go with todays mainstream understanding of how (horror and action) games should look and play.

One example visually: I am not an artist in any way but the original set an overwhelming mood by using colours and light. Especially the lighting is sometimes terrible in the remake and misses the point that the original made. RE4 is by no means bright but you are aware of the environment at all times because it is just well lit enough to see every detail of for example a room that you are in. Look at the water hall. It seems that in RE4R the devs just thought dark = spooky so we have to make it darker. Although that sometimes can be the case it just bad to generalize it so much. The point is the water room is not a place where something is lurking in the shadows, the horror is more like "here is the danger right in your face, deal with that, NOW". On the other hand there are areas where it does make sense to make it darker for example the labs where the regenerators lurk or the encounter of the first villager. The original achieves horror over stress (survival horror) which brings me to the next point.

The gameplay: the main change in gameplay is that now you can perform reloading, relocating, shooting at the same time. I chose the word relocating because that is actually what you are doing in the original. You are looking for a good place to stop and shoot or reload. You are constantly evaluating these choices which creates what? Yes, stress! which again is part of the horror in this game. It also shows in the small amount of ammo and healing items that you will find in the game to always remind the player: shots count! enemy hits count! The remake on the other hand is taking a different approach by saying that now you have to be in constant movement. Just standing in a corner will not help you anymore which the village fight perfectly demonstrates. I actually like this idea a lot but feel that the devs failed to implement it in the rest of game which was designed to work with the relocating approach. Which brings me to the next thing I really dislike about the remake: the staggers. Now enemies can tank headshots while the original was rewarding every headshot with a 100% stagger to lead to a powerful roundhouse to make space for you. Ok, you don’t need that any more as now you are more agile but I have to say that it just is not as fun as the original where, like I mentioned, you feel rewarded every time you hit a headshot.

To the soundtrack I have to say that again the remake fails to understand the original in some aspects. While the soundtrack of the original has a lot of noisy, environmental, eerie tracks the remake adds more epic ones which is ok but there are a lot of areas in the remake that are just silent. Why they removed the serenity track from the save rooms is just beyond me. It was supposed to sooth you and calm you down to build up the tension afterwards again. Something genius that the devs failed to see.

What disappointed me the most about the remake was the island section which was the weakest part of the original that would have needed more drastic changes. The island is basically a military base with a little bit of ruins, underground and labs here and there. This miliary base setting never clicked with me and it always felt like the horror part is mostly over now and we now enter the like 90% action and 10% horror part of the game while before it was like 60-40. The remake did not change a lot here. It was only optimized while it needed a complete overhaul.

At the end of the day you have to ask yourself what the remake really 100% improved and what you would miss playing the best version of the original which is the HD project by re4hd.com :

    - Changing weapons over d-pad
    - Picking up items faster and no despawn of items
    - Storage box for weapons and first-aid-sprays
    - balancing of the weapons
    - enemy designs (Dr. Salvador looks amazing!)
    - re-design of Ashley and her dynamic with Leon

Meanwhile I miss following things that were in the original:

    - sound
    - art direction, lighting, style
    - good voice acting (Ada)
    - content
    - death and reload animations
    - lack of micro-transactions
    - no frustrating grab attacks but rewarding 100% staggers

Some later segments manage to capture the survival horror atmosphere, adding depth to the experience. However, the repetitive enemies and their unvaried dialogues break the immersion and hinder the overall mood.

The game's lackluster story and characters fail to engage players, leaving them uninvested in the narrative. Furthermore, the subpar graphics raise questions about the necessity of a remake for a relatively recent game. The inclusion of cheesy dialogues from main characters further disrupts the horror atmosphere, detracting from the intended experience.

The abundance of hordes of enemies veers the game more towards an action-oriented direction rather than true survival horror. While Resident Evil 4 Remake retains some of the franchise's signature gameplay, it struggles to recapture the chilling and immersive horror elements that defined the original game. Despite its solid gameplay foundation, the lack of innovation and questionable design choices make this remake fall short of its potential.

I'll be honest, it used to be a great series in the horror gaming world, but now it's just a name from the past. The game's audience cares more about the characters than the actual gameplay. It's a decent game, but it's overrated. If you were to give it to someone who has never played the game before, they would probably give it a maximum rating of 7.

Put simply, RE4 didn't need to be remade. A simple graphical overhaul could be done, sure, but the gameplay in RE4 completely holds up. The first thing I did after I finished this remake was go start another playthrough of RE4 VR (which I maintain is still the superior version). This game left a bland taste in my mouth and overall it just feels like a cash-grab. Not a lazy cash-grab like the RE3 remake, but a cash-grab nonetheless.

That's not to say the game is terrible or is not enjoyable. It has plenty of fun moments and it's interesting to see how they reimagined some things, but ultimately this fails to achieve what it strived for.

RE4 R is a safe, unfinished, inferior re-imagining of one of the greatest games ever made that has unnecessary monetization (day one DLC plus more added after reviews) and doesn't need to exist. However I still really enjoy it and recommend it.

The crazy level of mainstream praise this game has received is bad for the future of the medium. The dismissal of the original, the claims that the original needed modernizing and that this new version of RE4 is better or on par with the original is awful. I thought video games were a medium deserving respect. Doesn't the gaming community get pissed off anytime someone from TV or film makes an ignorant comment about games. So why are we treating one of our classics like this because there is a shiny new but inferior version out. Could you imagine this happening to a classic film, TV show, book etc? Are video games disposable toys that we get rid of when new ones come out or are they art?

The way the original plays is so good. The combination of the way Leon moves/controls, standing your ground, accurate shooting, melee attacks, knife, repositioning when needed and using the environment to your advantage with the way enemies move/attack/behave/react, enemy variety, level design, the weaponry and set pieces just works so damn well. It doesn't have any right to be this good but it is. It is near perfect. This re-imagining takes this gameplay and tries to modernize it, make it more realistic and play similar to other modern 3rd person shooters. In doing so they upset the near perfect balance. So they tried adding new things and re-balancing to get it near perfect again but failed. What we are left with is a game that is good to play but less fun and more frustrating than a game made almost 20 years ago. Nearly every part of the gameplay needs adjusting. But I think with further tweaking it could play different but as good the original.

The re-imagining does do a better job with the story and lore but loses so much of what made the original special. The characters have more depth now but lose almost everything that made them so entertaining. There is so much cut from this game and none of the changes or additions make up for it. The pacing is also worse. How did this re-imagining drag on longer than the original when it has less content? Why do the merchants side missions and back tracking for treasures feel like unnecessary bloat?

It does look quite good after turning off lens distortion and chromatic aberration but I still prefer the originals art direction. It runs well too. I only noticed a little jankiness and the frame rate only dipped a little when things got busy in the rain. There was a little pop in too.

Why was Mercenaries not at launch and why does that mode feel underdone? Why are there little things I need to pay extra for? (Like the original soundtrack) Why have they added more little things to pay for? Are these going to make the game easier? Did they deliberately make the game harder/more frustrating/grindy hoping to push some to buy these? (Please don't buy them). Why wasn't all this at launch during the review window? What dlc is coming and how much are they going to charge for it? Why are so many people just okay with this?

Why am I already tired of this game while looking forward to continuing to replay the original for another 18 years? It is just such a huge missed opportunity. Capcom took something brilliant and instead of remaking it, building on it, trying to improve it and leaning more into what made it one of the best ever they decided to make it something different. But not different or bold and fresh enough to stand on it's own.

    - This game and the original are not survival horror, stop calling every horror game survival horror. It sucks seeing one of your favourite genres being erased by mislabeling and wilful ignorance.

    - This is a re-imagining not a remake. A remake is the same again but hopefully better. A re-imagining is a reinterpretation which is very familiar but different.

I'm still giving this game a high 7, even though this has been a pretty negative review, because even an inferior re-imagining of RE4 is still RE4, which is unbelievably good. There's still plenty of fun to be had here, there are some good moments and ideas and it's a pretty polished game.

So go play the original if you haven't or replay it again if it's been a while. But still check out this new version just don't take the mainstream reviews seriously, keep your expectations reasonable, enjoy it for what it is and it'll be a good time. I paid full price day one and got the Platinum trophy and I don't regret it. 7.8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphically the game is a complete improvement, in mechanics it also improved some details, but it also completely ruined the immersion by eliminating the Quick Time Events for the most part, although the change in the knife mechanics makes it innovative compared to the original, I must say that the durability of the vest or the acquisition of amulets was not very successful making it annoying, in narrative although it is quite similar to the original game, I must say that a false religion and a villain on duty focused on world domination are given more focus Speaking of which, I didn't like Saddler, because they gave him a more fragile, religious appearance and with some silly dialogues, just like Salazar who went from being a child aged by plagues, to seeing himself as a small old woman resentful of his family, the same as the village chief Mendez, that although his image is prominent, I must say that his personality is quite silly to the point of being a religious fanatic, just like they missed the opportunity to add him as a persistent enemy in the style Nemesis or Mr X, another character who changed his personality and appearance was Krauser, who now looks more like a resentful military man with a lack of strength in both his voice and appearance. The lack of cinematics was also noted in the presentation of the boss Del Lago, El Gigante, Los Novistadores, El Verdugo or Los Regeneradores which do not give the same sensation of suspense, fear or emotion (Except for the regenerators which are physically more threatening when running). The other thing is the lack of Bosses, sub-bosses or enemies like the U3, the other Executioner, The giant soldier with the hammer, The giant soldier with the Gatling Gun, The statue of Salazar, The giant in the 2 roads, etc. Like the removal of settings, such as the trap rooms, the ancient ruins, the cable car, the lava room with mechanical dragons, etc. Another key point that slowed down the game was the difficulty of the shooting gallery, in which I must say that I lost too many hours of play, which were quite frustrating and with little reward, due to the randomness of obtaining prizes. with the chips. And another point that played against him were the dialogues, which lack wit, humor, charisma, etc. Like the elimination of scenes, like the scene in which León bothered Salazar by shooting the bugle, or by throwing the knife in his hand, or by facing him in a trap room, etc. One last thing would be the battle with Krauser, in which you don't feel the same original sensation of being on a small stage in Raccoon City, hearing the sound remix, having to search for puzzle pieces or at the end having the classic counter ending to beat the boss. The reason i gave 7 is:

    1. You know, when you close to an enemy, you can perform a special knife attack by pressing R2, but if too close, that turns to normal attack, i died many times because of that.

Il est bon d'un point de vue scénario et histoire, car il suit à la lettre la version originale (c'est ce qui est attendu pour un remake), mais pêche légèrement sur la partie technique.

It feels bad to move and shoot in this. Getting Leon from point A to point B results in endless stumble animations because you have to sprint everywhere because the default walk is inexcusably slow. Even his run is too slow to carry you away from danger in reliable fashion.

The red-dot of the original, where your shots go where you aim, has been replaced with a cursor and random bullet deviation - resulting in the frustrating experience of missing constantly where you feel you should have hit.

At higher levels of play, the reliability of getting stagger animations and learning the game is gone - due to more randomness in the engine as relates to critical hits and whatnot. The tight "learnability" of the original is gone, where you could get good at the game through learning what reactions you'd get from hitting certain body parts and following up with melee attacks. This means that experience translated into performance in a satisfying way. Now, goodness is determines by player age, gaming hardware and a good mouse. It's just a poor, soulless follow up to a gaming great. The developers stood on the shoulders of giants and delivered a mediocre experience.

This remake drags the old game into the modern age, and unlike the original, I played this until its completion. With that said the game was still a big miss for me, the tonal shift from RE2 & RE3 is still too jarring, the story generally uninteresting and the gameplay a lot less survival horror and a lot more collect loot to upgrade your guns for the next shooting gallery.

Level design is a bit of a let down, half the corridors you walk or rooms you enter have you wondering why they would exist, what's their purpose? The suspense is ruined by a constant barrage of cut and paste enemies with a few forgettable "Shoot the yellow bit" bosses along the way.

IMO RE4 wasn't good back then, and it isn't good now. It's certainly playable, but also pretty missable.

Third, you can take damage of multiple enemies at once or you can get grabbed while damage animation is on, you can see this on professional often, you got attack, you got stunned and other people can still hit you but you can open your inventory or heal. Fourth, sometimes parry animation is on and you still receive a lot of damage (maybe that’s the mechanic). And lastly, sometimes enemies are in the middle of an attack and the same enemy grabs you, even when their animation was not completed, this feels strange. So my opinion, it’s a good game but I would prefer not to be the remake of re4, they messed up a lot of things, but hopefully they will patch them soon. In that case I’ll edit my review. Expand

I'm a casual fan of the series, but somehow just never got around to picking this game up prior to now. That being said, I was immediately blow away... by how much this game disappointed me. This is the game that some people will argue is objectively the greatest game of all time? First, the story was incredibly weak. It peaks in its opening hours and only goes downhill from there. I found Salazar and Saddler to be completely forgettable villains. Next, the gameplay. I found myself screaming at my TV in anger constantly because of how slowly Leon moves. The game is in a constant battle with itself because it wants to be a traditional survival horror game and a fast paced action game at the same time. I frequently found myself in situations that I felt were unfair simply because I couldn't move Leon out of the way in time before I'm being swarmed by 10 enemies who seeming came out of nowhere. Not to mention, the game has no consistency when it comes to fighting enemies. Sometimes a single headshot and a kick is enough to finish them off, and sometimes that same enemy takes 12 headshots and multiple roundhouse kicks to the face to finish off. It doesn't help that aiming your gun never feels right. This makes several moments such as trying to shoot small targets like the Regeneradors' weak spots more trouble than it is worth. The voice acting is also pretty mediocre. There are a few stand out performances (Luis, Ashley, and the Merchant), but most of the voice actors just feel like they don't want to even be here (looking at you Ada). This remake actually makes me want to pick up the original at some point to see if it is any better. At best, I can describe this as a soulless experience. I would argue that if you are a die hard RE fan and absolutely must play it, wait six or seven months until it is inevitably added to Game Pass and PS+ as free titles. Expand

Fun game but Resident Evil 2 remake is still superior in a lot of aspects even if its several years older.

Get rid of the arcade, retro, old school stuff please. Smashing barrels with stuff in it. Items not relevant to the enemy dropping them. Get rid of vendor and cash as it is... Its mystical yes but immersion breaking, irrelevant and makes no sense. Jewels ? Who gives a rat crap

No more infinite ammo, Rambo sequences driving stuff on a trail. This is supposed to be a dark, horror survival game... Come on. No more closing enemies spawning from nowhere. Its hard to feel present when almost at every turn you know stuff will happen or not because of a trigger... Director touch breaks the world.

I would have preferred smaller maps with more meaning in them. Fewer enemies and more spooky and dangerous atmosphere. Nothing is really scary and you can easily just shoot everything, running almost like DOOM with exploding barrels picking up dropped items.

You guys are almost there ; graphics, game-play, aesthetic, story, mechanics. Just be more serious and severe. And for cry sake, Capcom, stop it with boss that have an eye for weak parts or indestructible ones that need to be at this particular spot when you activate the switch, we done that a million times already.

At it's best, it's the classic RE4 that we know and love, but at it's worst, it's a neutered version of the original that lacks the charm and fun that the original had. The visuals, characters, and story are all more "realistic", and the gameplay is solid, but the gameplay in the original RE4 is still great and you can still easily get that on nearly every system. This one's a miss I feel, and you'd be better off just playing the original. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite what the shill critics and nostalgia-baited fanboys claim, the RE4 remake is just fine. I have very fond memories of playing the original on Wii -- motion control was the sh*t -- and was inordinately looking forward to this updated version. Graphically and aesthetically, the game is stunning: the environment is gorgeous, the lighting and score are outstanding, but... The controls have just not aged well, the voice over performances are embarrassingly bad, and the amended mechanics are barely functional. Stealth is okay (though closing in on an enemy in crouch at a snail's pace gets real old real fast), parrying works sporadically, and dodging is practically non-functional (barring the occasional QTE button prompt). Basically, RE4 looks like a next gen game, but plays, and feels, like a sorely out-of-date one. I enjoyed myself immensely for the first half (12-ish hours) of my playthrough, and then it just became a slow, frustrating slog. By the last few chapters, I really just wanted it all to end. Expand

This game is like soulsborn difficult without the souls mechanics to compensate. I'm just endlessly dying without enough resources to upgrade to stay equal to the enemies I'm fighting. Enemies randomly die in 2 hits from the crossbow, then randomly take 5 shots from my strongest gun. Reticle is completely garbage and just as random. I can single tap a medallion from half a mile with a pistol and not honed in, then completely miss a magnum shot to the head when it's dead center. The endless spawning enemies in some sections are just flat out cheap when combined with the fact that you can in essence just get stun locked by them. I don't know y'all, this is simultaneously one of the best remakes out there, while being one of the worst. My God, even one of the OG boss fights I sincerely don't understand how NOT to get hit. It has random dodge mechanics for some attacks and others seem like guaranteed homing attacks that are unavoidable and take half your health or more. I was so excited for this release that I took my vacation from work for it, I want my vacation time back now. It's not garbage but the difficulty is beyond souls anger-inducing. I actually recommend waiting for a price drop, didn't even release with merc mode. Kinda annoys me that it's getting so much praise, I had like 10 rating fun with the og and this is like 4 on the fun scale. Professional S+ is too easy, parries trivialized the difficulty in this game. The tank controls and stiffness of OG adds a layer of depth and frustration that can only be replicated in 2005. Resident Evil 4 Remake not only does right by its original source of inspiration, but it also sets a high bar for what modern day remakes can be. All components of the story have been finetuned into a more well-thought out package, and that’s before mentioning the game’s full use of today’s graphical prowess to deliver a more terrifying interpretation of rural Spain. The core gameplay also retains what made it so great back in the day, but with modern amenities such as a parrying system, quick-select for weapons and the ability to run. And despite the new improvements, the increased aggressiveness of the enemies ensures that the game never feels like a cakewalk. I don’t know who still needs to be convinced at this point, but Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece that I cannot recommend enough.
