Mar 17, 2023Resident Evil 4 Remake asks the bold question of whether you can perfect what many already consider perfection. While fairly competent at the basics, Capcom's latest remake has the least creative energy of its series revivals, leaving you wanting for much more.

Mar 17, 2023In an attempt to make Resident Evil 4 with more modern sensibilities, it has left behind what made the original game so great to begin with.

Apr 17, 2023Not only does it pay homage to the 2005 classic very well, but it refines many situations and modernizes them to add more tension. One of the best remakes I've ever played, and also one of the best Resident Evil. [Recommended]

Mar 17, 2023I had developed a distaste for the original RE4 because it led the series down a path that took horror out of the franchise. The remake revitalized my fondness for the game, taking me back to 2005, when I first played the original. Back then, seeing a game play so differently from the older Resident Evil titles was mind-blowing. Now this remake creating a true horror vibe with interesting characters is giving me a lot of that same joy.

Mar 17, 2023Keeping what works while reimagining what doesn't, this is about as good as remakes get. [Eurogamer Recommended]

Mar 17, 2023For all of the rough edges that it smooths over, RE4 pulls off the same trick that RE2 did in 2019, making a groundbreaking but now dated game feel brand-new again. But after four Resident Evil games in as many years, even the current incarnations of the franchise are starting to feel a bit familiar — there are hints of the cookie-cutter mold that Kobayashi set out to shrug off more than 20 years ago, even in Capcom’s slick and gorgeously produced remakes. This latest one is no anomaly.

Mar 17, 2023Let’s be clear: Resident Evil 4 (2023) is not a revolutionary game. There’s nothing in its high-octane run through the Spanish countryside that we haven’t seen before, sometimes literally—and so it’s always going to pale a little bit in comparison to the gleefully creative original. But it is an impeccably refined game (and, yeah, that is a somewhat odd thing to say about a game where man-sized bugs can puke acid down your throat). It has been tweaked and tuned down to the atom to satisfy, to propel, to delight. From its opening moments to its final cutscenes, it delivers fun with a consistency that sometimes even manages to outshine its source material; we might miss the goofiest moments, but Resident Evil 4 (2023) proves that sometimes a little maturity can be a very good thing.

Mar 17, 2023When Resident Evil 4 first came out, it was a game unlike anything Capcom had made before. And it turns out that, almost 20 years later, it’s still as refreshing as ever — even if it’s yet another remake.

Mar 17, 2023This remake is a celebration of the past, and does not view it, and what hindsight often does to it, with contempt. It stands on the shoulders of a gaming masterpiece, and tries to climb a little higher.
