Pretty much a DLC for 2018. Hasn't really evolved gameplay wise.

Dialogue is Marvelesque with cheap oneliners spoken in modern American accent and vocabulary.

Kratos has almost completely changed as a character. Instead of being a more mature, stoic warrior from 2018, he is filled with emotions and has his heart in his hand.

This is not your traditional Gof of War. You are not always in control of Kratos. Just think of Sony making God of War like they did with Last of Us 2 playing Abby. Not invested in Abby or Atreus, too bad you will be forced to play the character.

The story is actually less adult oriented and more in line with teens. Its still a decent game but I would wait for a sale. Its the weakest

Personally I think this game missed the mark. It is padding hard, overstays its welcome and has some good aspects, e.g., locations, visuals. However, the story progress, traversing and fighting are definitely the worst part of it.

Personally I think this game missed the mark. It is padding hard, overstays its welcome and has some good aspects, e.g., locations, visuals. However, the story progress, traversing and fighting are definitely the worst part of it.

Simply said fighting heavy, unresponsive and unnecessary cumbersome /artificial difficult which slows down enemy engagement. Weapons don't have weight, lock on is bad, you constantly get attacked from enemies out of view, the enemies do not flinch - The Draugr / boss encounters being the worst offender for enemy health, damage and arena and (mini-)boss design and layout. Even standard enemies feel "spongey" and damage you receive seems way over-tuned, leaving you in defense / reaction mode most of the times (at least above normal difficulty; haven't tested below).

When I think about it, the gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Dark Souls but in a bad way, as the latter has not that many unblockable attacks and encounters feel better designed (thus feeling better IMO). Bottom line, from a gameplay-perspective, the mechanics are not as sophisticated to stand on their own and, thus, are not on par with other hack-n-slay-games, e.g., DMC, Bayonetta or even old GOW, as well as DS, though this may be intentional. IMO this game feels frustrating for the wrong reasons.

Further aspects relevant to the (lowered) score, in short: The game crashes on PS5; the performance (FPS) is not great / stable unless on performance mode which does impact quality a great deal; the map design is visually great but gameplay-wise repetitive; the gameplay basically hasn't changed much / at all from GoW 2018, which is probably due to the same weapons, I wanted God of War but this has too much (God of) Junior in it, while Kratos doesn't feel powerful at all.

An amazing game that is unfortunately held back by questionable combat and camera choices.

The narrative and story telling in this game is phenomenal. Just like the first game, it really feels like you're almost playing a movie. They break up the game much better than the first with much more obvious side quest areas. The side quests themselves are worth doing just for the narrative elements alone. They are truly amazing and fulfilling pieces of content that are just as good as the main storyline. They also are almost a necessity if you are playing on the harder difficulties.

The armor, weapon, and skill tree systems have all been expanded from the first game. There's a lot of terrific rpg elements to be found here with lots of ways to customize your builds.

Unfortunately the combat still has some pretty massive issues, especially on the harder difficulties. It can be somewhat hard to explain because it really just comes down to the combat not "feeling quite right."

Hit indicators are absolutely terrible. Attacks coming from 180 degrees in front of the player have no hit indicators at all. There's way too much going on the screen for a player to be able to see a fireball coming from a 90 degree angle. The VAST majority of my deaths are from due to offscreen, barely visible attacks. It also seems that even the hit indicators from behind don't always work. If your camera is slightly tiled downward, if an enemy is in the camera view, the hit indicator won't show.

Almost every enemy has some form of super armor during certain attacks. You will often be hit in the face as you're absolutely wrecking an enemy. This can even occur during some runic attacks. This is one of the worst aspects of GOW combat. There should be very few and very specific enemies that have super armor. When you're fighting a group of 10 enemies, the last thing you want is for a random grunt to disrupt the combat chain because they decided to launch one of their random attacks that gives them super armor. This is probably much less of an issue on the easier difficulties, but if you're playing on the hardest difficulty, one hit from a grunt his likely at least half your health. The combat often doesn't feel like it "flows" well as a result.

Which also leaves me to my next point, which is that gear upgrades on the hardest difficulties almost have no purpose. Every enemy will two shot you. This is the laziest form of difficulty scaling. Difficulty should come with better AI, more attack patterns, and smarter encounters... not just scaling the damage up 300%.

I know that some people will say "just turn down the difficulty," and they might be right to some degree. Turning down the difficulty will probably result in the combat flowing better, but I don't think that's the actual issue at heart. Kratos should feel powerful, and he just doesn't when a random grunt ignores your attacks.

Despites GoW shortcomings and frustration in combat, they are mostly overshadowed by its many incredible moments and overall story telling.

I understand that some people would have trouble sitting through Atreus temper tantrums, and want to slap the kid silly at times. I'm with you right there, but that's what kids are known for. So I'd rather praise Santa Monica for making such a realistic great character that get under my nails at times, then deprive myself of (one of) Kratos's best game. Seeing my man's story go full circle and his incredible character development over 15+ years does make even men like myself reaching near 40 burst out in tears.

Also, the combat can be certainly frustating at times. But it's funny that people lay the fault at their terrible decision making which can lead to you getting owned quickly on the combat system. The combat can be as great as you want to make it. Yeah Kratos ain't stopping mid animation to dodge, but how is that wrong? And if you can't get the timing for parries, stand before the mirror that maybe you ain't that great of a gamer.

Personally, I love the game to death. It's definitely goty material in my book. The story is amazing, the graphics are beautiful, with spectacular level designs. Maybe some are just getting too spoiled. I really don't know which games they are comparing it to for **** on the graphics. And the combat with it endless combinations can be addictive as hell as long as you want to keep bettering yourself. I certainly don't regret spending every penny I have on it, and the GoW controller that I purchased with it.

A fully realised world with so much openness and physics and unexpectedness and tonnes of content in every corner. By comparison this game is on rails, the dialogue is brutish and rarely interesting.

The locations are limited and have little actual logic in them - why must I continually do one-way things that show no one has ever been here before, and yet apparently there are people everywhere who must have needed that path. Why do dwarves build extremely complicated machines that DO NOTHING? Why are deserted areas full of lit fires? The walking around is frustrating. What can I go off that ledge? Why can’t I climb that tiny snowbank? Why can’t I get over that tiny branch? Why must I spend half an hour going around?

Enemies spawn in front of you and then disappear as soon as killed. Loading zones appear every 100m as you crawl through gaps. It’s just all dumb and this breaks the immersion continuously and destroys what story there is. Even the dialogue is so stupid and simple. It’s for kids. It’s like a 90s platformer in 3D.

What I can say after playing all the games in the franchise is that this game, left nothing to be desired, delivered everything and a little more. Perfect narrative, excellent plot. The development of Atreus went from good to great.
Kratos was very mature in this game and this was inserted in a way that the player can feel it, either by re-reading his actions, or by the way he behaves

Puzzles are more complex (tho the characters help too much for my liking).

+A campaign that doesn’t overstay its welcome, but has tons of side content to explore.
+ Great boss fights that makes up for 2018’s lack of boss fights.
+A fantastic value for the price that’ll make it easy to return to after beating it.

    - The last act can drag up until the final mission.

God of War Ragnarök is a fantastic game that is absolutely worth the money and I personally feel, is a solid contender for the 2022 game of the year. It’s an improvement over everything 2018’s GOW did and it tells a great story. There aren’t many issues with it that have me reducing the score. Even though I am giving it a 10/10, it’s not a perfect game, the last act drags a bit up until the final battles but besides that, it’s an excellent game that is well worth the price of admission. If you’re a God of War fan, you’ve probably already played and conquered it, but if you’re on the fence, I can assure you it’s well worth it and is my personal game of the year for 2022.

There's a reason the user scores are higher for this game than for elden ring. I beat that game as well, but honestly it had way more problems than people generally talk about. No story at all and the same old combat is just boring after awhile. Ragnarok has one slow section that lasts for maybe 40 minutes out of 70 hours of incredible content. I did see some of the more median and lower review scores and find it silly with some of the comments made. Unfortunately, as I repeat, not for the better, this is my subjective value judgment. And if we add to all of the above, then what was promised in the advertising from sony nextgen for ps5, the adaptation of dualshock 5 for ps5 (which was practically non-existent), then there is an unpleasant feeling of aggressive advertising with a poor-quality product. I also want to note then that the difficulty of the God of War is made easier than in the previous part. And also added more lyrical long boring levels, for example, the game for Atreus is quite boring. I went through the last part 5 times and will go through with pleasure again, but this part seems to be one time. I hope the next part will return to the previous quality, considering that everyone will already have a ps5 and possibly on the next generation graphics engine.

The whole game was freaking amazing apart from the part after the ending when atreus knocks kratos in the realm tear and everything is white and they just wake up, which I found a little confusing. But I do think they will explain it in the next game, so it's like a set up, same with atreuses adventure. And the ending of kratos becoming a god worthy of worship was really nice too. To conclude everything the only things I didn't understand will probably be explained in the next game and apart from that the game is amazing and a really nice conclusion to the Northern mythology storyline. 10/10 would recommend it. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]
