I went in to this has something to simply pass the time and I've finally finished it and this game is probably one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. From the storytelling to the core fighting just seems perfect. My only issue with this game is it could of had far more haptic feedback and adaptive triggers but overall one of the best story driven games you will play this generation Expand

In God of War 2018 we saw the maturity of Kratos' character, and in God of War Ragnarok, in addition to the evolution of the maturity of Kratos' character, we see the maturation of Atreus

Tries too hard being a Last of Us game than a God of War game. But instead, we get a game where for the majority of the time you walk, travel, ride and other transports and talks. LOTS AND LOTS OF TALKING. There is a place called „Ironwood“ and it‘s the most boring 3 hours in God of War History. Even the Gods are all washed up disappointmentss from what we have heard troughout the tales in 2018. And the only thing worse than their characters are their designs. Gone are the days where Gods were designed to look powerful and threatening, fitting for the stories told about them and are replaced now with „realistic, down to earth depictions“ yay...

And that’s all excluded by the extremely rushed writing of the game. A character that tries to kill you for over 3 years starts siding with you within the first few hours of the game. The actual Ragnarok event only last for at most 1 hour and a newly introduced character gets so little screentime before he sacrifices himself even thou there was more than enough time for him to get to safety too.

God of War is dead and whatever this is isn’t God of War anymore, it’s the MCU‘s version of it with the plan for Santa Monica Studios being to be like Naughty Dog.

God of War Ragnarök is everything you could possibly want from a sequel. I was blown away by the craft - it is exceptional video game production. The story, the characters, the environments, the combat, as well as the performances are all top tier across the board. This is another must-play from Santa Monica Studio.

The combat is different and I can't explain it. Instead of a badass God of War eviscerating enemies, it feels like you are slowly chipping away at the health of most foes. Often you are fighting multiple foes at once, so when you are chipping away at one enemy another one is always trying to stab you in the back so you need to Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge out of the way every few hits. Makes combat slow and tedious. Doesn't help that the enemies feel like reskins of ones from the original game. I played 10ish hours and lost interest. Maybe I'll try again after some time and see if it get back into it. I might have to go back to God of War and play again to try and see if it's the game or if it's just me that feels different. God of War: Ragnarok is a masterpiece of modern video game development. The characters and story telling reminded me of experiencing the Lord of The Rings trilogy in theaters. Every emotion was experienced playing this game, the story, the narrative, the characters full of life and the accompanying musical score made me feel like I was back in high school watching LOTR for the first time again.

Ragnaroks gameplay is built off what made it successful in the 2018 adaptation and have expanded meaningful and interesting content to fill the beautiful world they created. I haven't had so much fun doing side missions in a long time, as the game cultivates each of these experiences with additional lore and story. The dialogue between each character and the history about them are further expanded on as you decide to go off the beaten path and explore the rest of the realms.

The combat has been tuned even further providing much more meaningful encounters. However, as perfect as the game has been there were still some annoying timing issues I found dodging certain attacks that felt completely random at times. This is especially prominent in harder difficult fights similar to the Valkrie bosses from 2018. It certainly added frustration but not enough to deter me from this great game.

I could write the 5k character limit on this review but their is no need. This game is a MUST PLAY on any platform, hopefully it will release on PC so PC players can experience this modern day marvel of a game.

The problem is that Ragnarok follows the SONY AAA playbook. It's basically every game we've played in the last decade. Took me 40 hours to beat it but I swear it felt like 100. The main story is just BORING. It trys and succeed in bulding a climax that never comes....at the and of the game I felt like I've got a good BJ but never got to cum. If you are a fan of the classic TRILOGY like me, you can sit this one out, or at least wait on a bit. It's definetley not worth the $70.

This must be trilogy, you ruined it
    The world is empty again!
They compare side quests with The Witcher 3 but GOW is way behind
Odin didn't give a sh*t about Ragnarok but the mask
The Ragnarok was not about world ends but only Asgard! I think lazy devs made this decision, also Ragnarok itself was not big deal, you name a game Ragnarok and it's 10% about Ragnarok itself
Thor said I see you again to Kratos at the beginning but never catch Kratos up till last hours of game, Odin disguised as Tyre but for what reason? Did he use the information he gathered? No, he knew Kratos is seeking the spear for killing Himdal but didn't warn Himdal or at least didn't take horn from him .
Fenrir was ghost and had do nothing In storyline. Thor the god of thunder has been killed by one-hit spear and vanished :/
Also Combat algorithm of Odin, Thor and even Himdal was poor and bad and not breathe taking at all.
    The narrative was bad
Combat system didn't add anything but they removed bare hand and some Blade combos.
Asgard is little village, I expected huge palaces and City, Again thanks for lazy devs
What have you been doing in these 5 years? I was huge fan of GOW but I hope Elden or any other games win the goty award, also metacritic score is worthless, 94? It should be something around 80`85 thanks to Gameplay, graphic and Sindri/Brok, that's it

This game doesn’t evolve anything remember the climbing from uncharted? It’s here from the very first Uncharted game Sony have copy and paste their play style and implement it into every other games they make of course with tweaks and changes but it’s the same formula and it’s gotten so much worse at least Uncharted I could fall off and die in those types of games I could turn off my brain and have some fun with it of course it’s not a major grand adventure game like Zelda franchisee but at least it was fun Now none of that happen The game is so boring I lost my interest in the story because how much the character talk and talk and talk to the end of time Im tired of it You know developers there is something called music right ? In your game it’s barely present I could not hear it because you guys keep the character talking that’s painfully annoying, boring and repetitive Make the music give the place spirit and live and happen by making loud and clear to listen there’s to many norse good music there use them instead of making weak forgettable ones repetitiveness this game is so repetitive You will do the same things again and again and again you go from point A to Point B then solve some puzzles then fights some enemies and solve and fight with the same boring fighting style also the enemies are weak and stupid You all casuals who doesn’t know anything about what makes a good game fun and great should not rate this game 10s and what not

Go try some good ones first then try this again Here have some God Hand first game sense it has the same camera angles yea story, graphics are bad but gameplay still good and it beats Ragnarok in that regard because the enemies are actually designed around the player dodge, break guard mechanics Ragnarok enemies designed to be a sand bags Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Rising, Vanquish, Devil May Cry, And of course God Of War the old titles

All of those have a much better feel of combat an mechanic and an actual fun gameplay they are not perfect every one of them has it’s flaws but they will offer you the action gaming experience Ragnarok lacks Story they immersive they say Go play visual novel or some interactive games like the walking dead if you love stories so much and prefer them over actual fun gameplay and I assure you The Walking Dead story is so much better then Ragnarok

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s still a solid game. But I’m biased because I love the franchise. There are some very noticeable issues in this game. First and foremost is all the bugs in the launch version. I’ve never encountered any glitches in my three play throughs of 2018 but ran into so many in Ragnarok in just my initial playthrough. Some were serious enough that I had to restart checkpoint to continue. It’s just not polished enough.

The gameplay is fun. Basically the same formula with a few tweaks. I loved it in 2018 so I’m not complaining. The new addition is really useful, but a bit overpowering? The spear basically became my main weapon in the second half of the game.

The story overall is a good conclusion to the duology. There are issues in pacing at times. Like riding a buffalo (for an hour?) with Angrboda is kind of excessive. The important bits of conversations could have been merged into the two gameplay missions in that sequence. I understand the devs want us to know all about the giants and Angrboda. But because it was so long and boring, I started losing interests and stopped paying attention to whatever they were saying, which defeats the purpose.

And also there are noticeable gaps in the story. Maybe something cut? Like when Kratos and Atreus decided that they would not pursue Ragnarok any more and Freya went back to Vanaheim, the next story mission was to go after her. Why did you let her go in the first place? Just felt strange.

I like the ending plot. I think it suits the theme. But it’s underwhelming for its lack of grandeur. I know they had a change of mind and wanted to avoid more destructions and casualties. But maybe a more chaotic battlefield would make this change even more convincing?

The best part of the game for me so far is the side quests. It’s just fun exploring and some areas are very well designed.

It focus so much on Freya and woman empowering that Kratos looks like a cameo in his own game. Theres is even a part when Freya said she would sure be able to kill Kratos to wich he dont answer! That surely a joke.

Lets not even start on the boredom of Atreus and Angrboda's time in the land of the Giants. Filler content wich takes hour and hours of playtime i nearly fall asleep. Gameplay didnt evolve enough and in the end, a good number of mens in the game dies, while not a single woman do. Hmmm.

The new Santa Monica doesnt know how to make God of War, lets hope Ragnarok is the end of the series.

I really loved how art-house and inspired 'God of War' (2018) felt. The long one-take cinematic camera really captures this intimacy as you traverse through the Realms. The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

God of War Ragnarök feels like a very sentimental aftermath to that
I really loved how art-house and inspired 'God of War' (2018) felt. The long one-take cinematic camera really captures this intimacy as you traverse through the Realms. The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

God of War Ragnarök feels like a very sentimental aftermath to that adventure. Chapter 2 (if you may) the more hopeful light-hearted whimsical adventure that still keeps that sentimental core in-tack. This game continues that theme of 'Being Better' choosing to not let destiny and the past corrupt one's personal growth. Because of this, the game puts more emphasis on extended family and community. Making the game more, again, whimsical by design. This is more a fantasy drama compared to the moody direction of (2018).

This is not a bad thing. Ragnarök is more fun, gamified, compared to the first. I really enjoyed my time playing through Ragnarök for its narrative—and at times—fun gameplay decisions. I will say the best thing about God of War Ragnarök is that it has a very cinematic grand adventure narrative with a lot of depth in its performance, persistent narrative threads. Yet, because of this, the game feels more like a film at times than a video-game. An interactive film – if you may.

With all this positive. Some very critical negatives:
The gameplay feels inconsistent on harder difficulties. I believe they wanted a nice animation based souls-lite combat system. I think this is a great idea, but for what ever reason you do not have invincibility frames allowing for more frantic, fast-paced, combat. Also, you can be damaged quite severely when engaging in combos and cannot cancel attacks. This become VERY infuriating when playing the game. It did create a challenge, but it never felt like I was at fault, more the game locked me into something i couldn't escape from. Reminded me a lot of Dark Souls 2 gameplay for whatever reason. Also the lock-on system jerrkss the camera around too much for my liking. Luckily, the game really allows you to customize your play style in the settings without effecting trophies and achievements. Also, too many of the fighting arenas (near the end of the game) put very fast (unpredictable) enemies way too wedged into tight spaces that create this strange, annoying feeling of fighting the camera more than the actual enemies. Game environments, whilst looking very pretty – genuinely breathtaking – don't offer much in the way of inversive gameplay elements (only one or two maps/open world segments do)

God of War Ragnarök is a very fitting conclusion for Kratos. A very beautiful send off to a hardened, troubled character that learns to 'be better'. I, overall, just wish the combat was smoothed up and the level design was a lot tighter and varied.

Overall, a solid 8/10 (i haven't completely completed the game yet - want to do all the after Ragnarök side stuff)

The voice actors make the entire game for me. they have the most convincing voices in any game I've ever seen. They know how to act in the exact moment, went beyond my expectations. This guy also has its fair share of hardness, as it is a very well rounded combat game. The combat in this game is perfect. The boss fights are amazing, the mobs we fight are ranged from easy to insanely hard. With all types of weapons from ice swords to plasma beams to long greatswords. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Half the game is great the other half is meh or just unlikable. The combat is still top notch. Everything feels smooth the graphics look even better this time around after just completing the original reboot. That said most of the story is middling at best. The new main antagonists are just not that great. Odin is some frail old dude who while smart in some aspects get completely out played at almost every turn and is not nearly as intimidating as his dead son Baldur. Thor is a cry baby who is incapable of making his own decisions and is constantly just get told what to do by everyone around him. He literally takes orders from everyone from his dad, to his wife, his daughter, atreus, and Kratos. Atreus is completely different from the confident partner he became in the first game. Arguing at every turn the whole game is basically about following his wishes while also trying to stop him from wrecking the 9 realms. Freya cries, like Alot. Almost everytime she's with you she's crying about how hard her life is like you don't have your own problems. There's also only really 1 OMG moment the whole game. Everything seems just interesting enough to not quit but never "oh my God that's awesome". Spoilers*** You never get Mojlnir. Thors legendary hammer that's talked about the entire first game, the hammer teased at the end, and the hammer included in the special edition. Yeah, almost never in the game except to know down some walls and iceicles. I guess I wanted something more and with no real big scenes other than the finale I was left under whelmed. Is definitely fun for the combat but if you're expecting something as interesting as the original, I don't think it happened Expand

I know my review of this game will not be the popular opinion, but I couldn’t help but feel extremely let down with this sequel. It’s not a bad game, but it’s only a shadow of what made the first game so great. It’s more of the same, and not for the better.

Gameplay is largely the same. The gameplay and controls are so smooth and engaging that it’s still just as satisfying as it was the first time, especially in regard to the combat. Something that I found a bit disappointing was that they recycled all execution animations for enemies that were in the first game, it truly felt a little lazy. I loved trying to do all the executions in the first game to see how brutal they were, but you really have seen a large portion of before before you even boot the game up. What really bothered me about the game is the very poor flow between combat, story, and puzzles. Especially because the “puzzles” are even more low effort than the first game. Now the vast majority of the puzzles are just a scavenger hunt, they don’t really require much logic, but the solution is most often something you have to hit that is hidden behind something else. After a few hours, those become so cumbersome and pull away from the flow of the game, even if they are easy. The other part of the flow that bothered me were all of the segments where you have to play as Atreus. At first, it was a neat little change of gears, but after the fourth sequence, I just want to rush through those parts. His play style is cool at first, but his recycled moves at even more blatant than Kratos. It takes away so much from the flow of the game that every single section where you play as Atreus felt like a chore, and there are a ton of Atreus sections.

I also found the story and characters to be far less interesting this time around. When you started the first game, you knew the plot, and while it was simple, you had it in the back of your mind the entire time. Now you have to play through the teenage angst undertone for 5 hours before you even know the overarching story. It’s awful. Luckily it does open up down the road and become pretty good over halfway through, but I cannot forget how stupid it was for such a long time. Some of the character development is pretty cool, but it really broke the spirit of who the characters are. Then somehow they made characters with massive potential like Odin and Thor so painfully uninteresting, and then they added tons of side characters that feel like they’re from an MTV fantasy show. It just feels very disorganized. Despite all these complaints, it’s still a good game. But it lacks the magic from the first game. This feels more like a massive DLC than it does a sequel. I enjoyed it as it’s own experience, glad I played it, but it didn’t do its justice as a sequel to such a major game.

The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war.
