Although its a pretty good game, I wont lie; I found this game kind of disappointing, and nowhere near as good as God of War 2018. Before I talk about my gripes with it, I will address the things I felt were good about the game.

The characters and the arcs they go through are fantastic, and the development of their values and relationships is really well written. Without getting into spoilers, the endings to Freya, Kratos and Atreus' characters were perfect and well deserved, especially Kratos who grows the most of any of the characters. The graphics are obviously amazing so I do not have to say much more about that. The new characters introduced are also pretty great, especially Thor and Odin. The side quests are surprisingly fun, and I actually enjoyed these more than the main story at times, they were like mini stories and full of history and emotion. The bosses are also pretty good, I dont remember a single one that was not fun to fight.

Now for the not so good stuff. While I wrote how I felt the characters were well handled, I think the story is not nearly as good as 2018. It feels quite underwhelming, and often feels like it does not take itself very seriously. The pacing is just not good, its far too long and we spent way too much time in very boring levels. I genuinely had to force myself to keep playing at many points in the game, and couldnt understand why the developers decided to make some of these sections so long. These drawn out sections don't contribute to anything I felt. A lot of things that happen in the story feel quite rushed and not earned, especially with the Aesir gods, who's endings were quite unsatisfying. Odin and Thor are not nearly as good of characters as Baldur. Side characters come and go, and big events happen very quickly. I do not know why, but the world felt so much more alive and huge in 2018, and that game was beautifully paced and had an incredibly satisfying ending. The combat in this also is not good, the enemies are extremely spongey, and often will kill you with no way of you predicting their attacks. I often rolled my eyes whenever i saw the 100th wave of enemies. Kratos is also extremely underpowered here, he dies so easily to enemies we know he should obliterate, but for some reason he has to hit a normal guy like 10 times with the blades of chaos to kill him. The music is also not as well utilised as the first game, I barely remember hearing it in this game. Also 2018 had far more wow moments, moments I revisit to this day because they were so awesome, I dont remember a single one in this game other than the first fight with Thor.

Overall, while this is a pretty good game and has lots of content which I may finish in the future; its a major let-down for me as the 2018 game was basically a masterpiece. I wish I could say this game was better than the first and exceeded my expectations but unfortunately it was difficult to get through at many points. Nevertheless, I think this is a fitting end to Kratos' story but I would not be opposed to seeing him in a future game.

The personal relationships between the characters were fully brought to life by great writing, emotionally resonant acting, and world-class animation. I think the way that Kratos strove to be a better father and was finally able to change his behavior after many years can be a meaningful message to everyone.

Everything else related to the game's technology, accessibility, and game mechanics also received notable improvements that were appreciated. My only frustration with this game was that the loading times were too long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Characters are cheap and poor written (Heimdall, Atreus, Angrboda, freyr.............) This is a big minus when half of the game are cutcenes displaying the characters. Also the story gets boring as a consequence. Thor and Odin, maybe the most anticipated part about this game, are minimized to two hippies with no debt, and are combined not half as interesting as Baldur was. The nine realms feels like a little neighborhood where people can go wherever they please.

Gameplay mechanics is good, but its generally the same as GoW 2018. Especially the runic attacks are 90 percent, or more, the same as those from the previous game. The puzzles are poor made, with little variation and a simple design which doesn't require any amount of thought, but rather a walkthrough of the whole area to get a glimpse of some hidden crack or mark. There are scenes which are extremely outdrawn, when you just have to sit and watch two **** ride a cowthing for an hour or so, with no actual gameplay, and a massive chunk of zero budget dialogue. While "playing" through this part, it's a wonder I didn't quit.

The only good things about this game are a few good bossfights (though not on level with the prequel), SOME good artdesign, some good music.

In addition, the sidequests and grind are boring, repetitive, and a massive waste of time.

Note: Also I suppose this review will be removed by metacritic for no particular reason, exept corruption.

Game looks and plays very good. The story is also very good. The things i did not like is that every world and every chapter feels the same. It looks different but feels like you play the same level over and over again. It also feels like an dlc of the 2018 game then a complet new game. The game has a good combat and a nice feeling of controlling the characters.

    Cons:
    - I don't really like the new magic arrow puzzles
    - Sometimes the game is quite linear, which is a bit frustrating
    - You can play with Atreus in certain parts, but combat with him was not as satisfying as with Kratos

Players of the first game and everyone else will still be very satisfied with Kratos's last adventure in the Norse universe, however I support the developers decision to end here. Topping such masterpieces are extremely hard.

God of War: Ragnarok is an utter masterpiece of a game. it is visually astonishing, constantly entertaining, and tells an absolutely beautiful story that defies every expectation that the original God of War would have loomed large over its sequel.

The only negatives I can offer about Ragnarok amount to two issues: The first is the game's occasional issues with pathing, where I was misled about where to go for a quest or two. This is a minor nitpick, and not something you should concern yourself with - in every other technical and performative aspect, this game is sublime, and performs with almost zero hiccups of any kind.

The second issue I have is that Ragnarok is a one-time sort of affair. The game is a highly evocative meditation on grief, identity, forgiveness, revenge and family - the performances from the game's cast of characters are all phenomenal, and the story is undeniably poetic and beautiful. But once this game's story is told, and the post-game is complete, it has given all that I believe it has to offer. The combat is fantastic, and the gameplay is all generally excellent. But the story is so central to the gameplay that playing through the game more than once feels pointless. In short: The approximately 40 hours you spend with this game will be incredible. But the replay value is not really there, in my opinion, and I think that this is the sacrifice Ragnarok chooses to make in order to tell such a moving story. I think this is an issue plaguing modern games like this, and similar 'story games' - Ghost of Tsushima and the Uncharted series seem like prime examples to me - do not offer enough variety in gameplay paths to make any more than one playthrough seem worthwhile to me. I hope that this approach to video games is not something we see become the norm, because I personally love games I can replay in different ways multiple times (i.e. Elden Ring and other build-based games).

Despite my aforementioned fears, I cannot possibly avoid giving Ragnarok anything but a perfect score. The story it tells is so powerful that I believe it can alter the way we choose to live our lives. What it lacks in replayability, it makes up for with the single marvelous punch it delivers. It is not the most fun game I have ever played, nor is it the best. But what it does, it does wonderfully, and it does so many of those things so excellently that anything but a "10" would be biased and begrudging. I hope that such beautiful stories, like the one Ragnarok tells, continue to populate the world of gaming as much as other, non-narrative-focused games - if Ragnarok is any indication of what may come, I look forward to what we can expect from game developers in the future.

After the first fights with Freya and Thor the game never hits the same tempo or intensity. The end fights are very mediocre and rushed not something I expected from such a great and usually polished franchise. They also hint at fighting Ragnorok himself, but they throw that out the window real fast. Fenrir barely makes an impact for what his role should be.

All and all very disappointed with the scale of the big boss fights and the rushed ending. Just Baldurs first fight in GOW 1 created a ravine! That's how crazy the fight was. You'd think a fight against an even stronger opponent like Thor would cause something like that, but no. It starts off strong and when you fight him again it's pathetic in comparison.

    The Bad (everything else)
    - Kratos is a wuss and you only see a glimpse of the God of War that he is after fighting Heimdall. Other than that, it's God of Mumbling (*hmpf* in one of his best lines)
    - Disney-ish influence all over the place; childish dialogues full of gags, probably written by a 10 years old "you've been bifrosted bro!". Inside Out squirrels. inclusive Giants and other characters because hey, there cannot be a White Wakandian, but for the Sake of Gods Norse Mythology was full un Black characters.
    - Odin says "f*ck" and things like that like there's no tomorrow. Very appropriate in a GoW game.
    - Crappy enemies that go ice skating while they're far but attacking because they HAVE to hit you, or force you to block/parry.
    - Enemies that won't stagger unless they decide you can make them stagger, like...
    - ...Berserkers; they have to finish their attack patterns before you can do anything. And they're soooo boooooring.
    - Oh another Valkyrie...maybe two...no wait there's more! *sigh*
    - Some huge areas (Svartalfheim, Vanheim) and others that are just a corridor (Helheim) or wasted (Jotunheim). They're just an asset for GoW 3?
    - Crappy story, Ragnarok is something that happens in the background while you make your way though corridors killing anonymous enemies.
    - No sense of wonder whatsoever. Asgard is just a bunch of huts with a tavern nearby, and the realms in general lack structures that make you feel like you're exploring something mythological.
    - No sense of wonder fighting bosses, except maybe for Nidhogg. I want to fight things like Posedon, the colossus from GoW or the hydra from the first game, something that makes me say "oh shiii how am I supposed to take it down? but I'm the God of War!" not a bear.
    - Thor is wasted, and you can't use Mjolinr.

    ATMOSPHERE: 7/10
I honestly expected a little more here. Some of the realms felt oddly barren in the name of an "open world" feeling that didn't really need to exist. It felt like they elected quantity over quality here. Not to say that this game's atmosphere is ugly, some areas are gorgeous. It just feels like some places didn't get a lot of love.

    CHARACTERS: 10/10
The reboots really shine here. They manage to respect what returning characters used to be and also what they grow into. There were returning characters that I did not expect to see whatsoever and realized how much they actually contributed to the story.

    PLOT: 7/10
With some serious pacing problems, plot was a mixed bag compared to GoW 2018. Some sections are a total slog and I couldn't believe how long they were taking while others (particularly Q4) were absolutely captivating. 2018 had fun reintroducing Kratos while Ragnarok had more trouble carrying out his story.

But, the original game had a very simple story that played out beautifully, whereas the sequel fell totally flat. I didn't just not enjoy the story, I hated it. It was nonsensical, contrived, and the ending was deeply unsatisfying. An event - Ragnarok - which is more or less Armageddon, winds up being a very short, very uneventful, boring part of the game. There was more involvement gathering fruit in one of Atreus's pointless side quests.
The whole "be better" thematic overall I just found aggravating. I am more likely to do another playthrough of the original game than Ragnarok again.

I really don't understand why this game is getting so much hate, it's an evolution of everything the first game was, by all accounts the game has gameplay that starts out simple, but then it evolves in a way that opens up several possibilities for the player, being able to combine different shields, relics, enchantments, and runic attacks, while switching between 3 main weapons, which provides a great variety of combat, the enemies are very unique and each type provides a different challenge, the areas of the game are diverse, and it is pleasant and rewarding to explore the secondary maps, despite all this the game has some negative points in relation to the story, it does not meet the expectations of many fans, and it is not as long as it should be for the closure of the Nordic saga, the final part, despite being epic, missed many opportunities, and I missed more antagonists in the narrative, but that does not completely spoil the game, as it is still a game far above average, the final product is a work of art, but it's not what many people expected. All of the past games have been masterpieces in my eyes. But now coming to Ragnarok - Oh boy, this game fails terribly in delivering on expectations or living up to the hype. Ever since the time I started the game, I felt something was off but then the **encounter** happened (aka first major cutscene to avoid giving any spoilers) and I thought the game was back on track. Little did I know that that cutscene was it. The absolute high point of the game - everything went downhill from there. The repetitive combat is no fun, enemies keep popping out every few seconds for no obvious reason whatsoever, then the oh so unnecessary puzzles to just increase play time. At no point did I ever enjoy the game but because of forever being a GoW fanboy - I sat and played through this excruciating game hoping it would improve and dazzle me - any moment now - just like it's predecessors did. That never came to pass and I ended up more frustrated then when I had started. Seriously Sony, Santa Monica - did a kid write this story, also, why are Odin and Thor using everyday slangs we use in today's time when conversing - what happened to trying to stay sort of true to the source material . Seriously are you guys just mocking your fans at this point.
Anyway, please go into this game with extremely low expectations if you want to have a good time. For long time Kratos fanboys- please try and stay from this mockery of a once great franchise- you'll thank me.

Only thing I noticed is that it seems harder. I played on hard and god of war for last game and hard was frustratingly hard this time around. SO yeah, it's basically more of the same. same scenery, same enemies, same combat BUT with a TAD more sprinkled in here. Story was also not as strong nor did I enjoy playing as loki. If you want complex gameplay, Ragnarok has it. If you want vast worlds to explore, this game knocks it out of the park with numerous worlds to explore. If you want a game with memorable boss fights, I lost track of how many main bosses and side bosses there were. There is variety, there is wonder, and there is so very much that Ragnarok offers you. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So where to begin. I really anticipated this game. Watched the release time go down like every evening after work. Than it finally came out. I started it and than.. Nothing. I just felt nothing. As the game starts you get pushed into a story a few years ahead after the end of part one. Now Fimbulwinter is reigning over the land. Simply form the very first scene, where Kartons sits at the bonfire In this cave the game didn't Catch me at all. The scene is way to long, and because there is no talking or any other significant action you don't know how to deal with it. Then both go to their sled and then finally you start taking real action in the game for the very first time. But still. No feelings.. You drive, they talk, the things spoken are not very interesting so far... Then out of nowhere Freya starts attacking you. Now there is the first time where we engage in that what the God of War franchise is known for the best. Fighting. But the fight just feels not right. I mean she has power over the land and stuff because of her magic powers and she easily could crush them in between all the rocks and stuff but she didn't. It just feels like the developers wanted to kickstart the game with this fight but they got it completely wrong. I mean why is she fighting them like this. I mean it should feel like hell brake loose. It is simply missing something. And this feeling carries on and on and on through out the whole game. I can understand that the game story wise needed to skip some years and that there are things like the dog dying and stuff that are new that need time to be explained. But the game, as good as it looks and as big and wound the story is meant to be, it lacks the one thing every game must have in order to make you feel like playing it all day long. It does not draw you into the world into the realm of the game. It does not give you the feeling of being a part of this world. I did not finish the game. This I need to say. Because every time I start it, after 10 minutes I want to close it. There is something in myself that tells me: "You are wasting your time." The only thing that kept me playing as far as I have played it (like 7-8 hours) is the combat and the possibility to discover and loot the world. I don't care for the story. There are so many things that disappoint me that make me really really sad, because the potential of a story and world like this is insane. Another big point where the developers, in my opinion, failed, is the music. The atmosphere. The level design it self is mind blowing immersive if you know how long it takes to build something impressive like this. The lighting is extremely good to. But there is no fitting music and therefor, completely missing atmosphere. This whole potential gets overlooked. You just go through the game like: "Yeah what ever." I remember God of War 2, the steeds of time level where you can just stand at the front end of the horses - the part where you have to free them - and the music is so subliminal but epic that it awakens a feeling in you like, you can really relate to the giantess and epic scale of the whole game. Within this few notes you can here the whole story of the game. But this feeling is missing completely. Any feeling is missing. They try to force you to feel, with overpriced emotional moments but again you don't get the chance to relate to the scenes. Next big negativ point are the conversations, mostly hollow and to modern, when it comes to the chosen words. Especially when Atreus speaks. In parts of the story logic is completely missing. Example: Atreus and Sindri secretly go to the lake of the nine - a well known area form the first game. There they try to awaken the world serpent. Sindri asks Atreus if he has tried calling the serpent. Then Atreus said that the horn was of no use. Than Sindri says: "Im not talking about the horn." And he immediatly starts calling the serpent in the ancient language it understands. LIKE WTF. He was there, year after year knowing that he can just call her and never did it. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Even the appearance of Thor and Odin is lame as hell. Such massive Characters - Lore wise - and then Thor appears just like that, simply walks in their house and says: "Nice place." In those moments I instantly want to close the game and delete it. Even Odin he just appears like that. I mean he is the Highest God of this realm and comes into his house, just like that to make a deal. And the whole situation with all the conversations just feels like the developers just wanted to get over with the introduction. Heartless. I would have wished for some more epic scale for their appearance. Something that does justice to the greatest gods in the realm. In my opinion, after so many great anticipated titles in last years that turn out to be hollow and superficial. Maybe its time to go back to the basics of gaming where the game it self did not needed to be a movie but something we love to play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most well written stories in games. Kratos after years of rage and fighting, had finally been able to settle down, with a wife who guided him through his pain and regrets. Now, Kratos has to go to war again, and worst of all, see his son go through it. He fears that Atreus will go down the same path as his, and it is amazing to see their journey.
The gameplay is a really great improvement, it feels more responsive and faster, parrying is really fun, and all the weapons complement each other amazingly well (sometimes in game development, less is more, so 1 new perfect weapon is way better than a dozen mediore ones). Admitedly, the fights thoughout the story are not that challenging, even less so if you are exploring as much as possible. You can get to Odin with so much great gear that he becomes really easy on the normal difficulty (which I believe to be fair, if you are playing on normal and prepare more than avarage, then you should have an easier time). However, there are many fun challenges in the game, the valkyries are gone, but there are Berserkers that have really cool fights.
I think this is really one of the best experiences on games right now.

GoW Ragnarok might be the best Playstation game that has been developed since The Last of Us (just above GoT). The mechanics, the combat, the story, the details, and the ending could be likely the end of the GOW saga. They do improve over GoW 2018; however, they introduced new parts of the games that were added poorly.

Some of the bad aspects of the game are:
    - There is some problem with pacing in the first half of the game. After the amazing intro and battle, we will have to explore new areas where basically most of the battles are very dull and there are too many puzzles that might feel you bored of it.
    - Extended artificial walking and climbing scene to tell you a story. This is personal, but just "playing" an automatic pilot part where you have to climb or walk while they tell you the story was a bad decision. I would have loved to do it as a cut scene.
    - The overpriced $10 for a PS4 game. We are still playing an old-generation game. There was no point to stop giving them an improved version like GOW 2018 had back then. The graphics are pretty much similar between versions and the use of the vibration and haptic feedback is at most unnoticeable. The damn gaps where you have to go through as loading screen.
    - Bugs at launch: Several parts where the music got bugged (no music suddenly) or the effects did not play properly. There were a couple of bugs that made me redo the sections. Frame drops on large areas. Many of them affected my experience.

Those are the reasons why this game is not getting a 9 or even a 10. The best game Playstation Studios has released in a while. I am Happy I could play it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Massive disappointment and a watered down follow up to the 2018 classic. Back in 2018 Kratos was still powerful and you always had the feeling his angry powerful self was still there, he is just trying his best to hide it. Fast forward to Ragnarok and Kratos is completely neutered...needs help finishing fights against powerful foes and doesn't even want to fight to begin with. Midway through he also wants to give up and go home. He needs other characters to make decisions for him in fear of upsetting them if he made them himself.

I honestly don't even know why Kratos is part of this game in the first place...the entire game you run around with Atreus and Freya's objectives in mind. They could easily have left Kratos out of the game and the story would not have changed. Expect tons of talking about feelings...even mid war as you storm down on Asgard, the supposed highlight of the game, Kratos finds time to preach to Atreus he needs to be himself and care about others. To tell him to be better for the 20th time...I mean seriously.

What happened to the serious, god conquering hero we grew to love up until now? Furthermore, cool lines like "don't be sorry, be better" in the 2018 classic is repeated so much and watered down I ended up hating the line and not ever wanting to hear it again. In the last mission alone the phrase "be better" must've been repeated 25 times. This game is your typical new age no accountability, political corrected, everyone has their reasons so nobody is really bad nonsense. To top it all off, Atreus does more damage to enemies swinging his bow than Kratos does with a magical axe, magical spear and the blades of chaos...WTF!!

Kratos has been reduced to a grunt to do the heavy lifting and do others dirty work but this game was just about Freya's redemption and Atreus' story. Kratos has 0 story in this game except for trying to be a sensitive father. The best part of the game was when Atreus left at the end so I can only play as Kratos. The production value is great, soundtrack boring and twists predictable. Graphics are really good and the world's are fantastic.

However, they tried making God of War an emotional relatable game and characters...something it never was. When Brok died I couldn't care less because we never had an emotional connection with him. It is incomparable to a moment such as Vesemir dying in Witcher 3...a character you actually cared about. The dwarves are also way too involved and I can't help but think this game was fan service to be cool with its over the top humor, most which is not funny, playing as Atreus and Kratos caring waaaaay too much. It is worth a play, but don't expect to be wowed by the over the top action and epic don't care attitude of a powerful god of war Kratos like the first games.

This game still uses too many masked loading screens. $70 and it doesn't utilize the strength of the PS5.

The levels are boring and repetitive. It's as if the developers randomly added enemies into the environments and called it a day. Ubisoft Montreal can design levels better than these developers, and let me remind you that Ubisoft Montreal develop games at a faster rate. Which begs the question, why can't these developers make more frequent releases if they are just going to copy/paste and lazily design the levels? Keep in mind that this is only half of the game, meaning these lazy developers only had to do half of the work. Where is the freaking multiplayer? Sony Santa Monica are clearly too cheap and greedy to hire more developers. The physics are beyond horrible. The camera is too close. It's embarrassing that modders can give us a FOV option with ease, and these lazy developers can't even give us a simple feature. Boss fights are terrible.

For goodness sake, why won't these developers let me skip the cutscenes in their games? Enough already. I don't want to watch a stupid movie about Norse mythology. I just want to punch monsters. It just goes to show how out of touch these developers are. I don't know anyone that cares about Norse mythology, aside bookworms. Some of us just want to go straight to the gameplay. Besides, the only people that I hear talk about stories in video games are millennials that love classic rock. I'm pretty sure the rest of us want to play the game, not watch a movie. I had the game crash on me and I was forced to watch the same boring cutscene again. This is why it's important to let us skip cutscenes. Even Naughty Dog lets me skip cutscenes. It's one thing to write a trash story, but forcing me to watch it is pathetic. I paid $70 so I should be able to skip whenever I want.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. And the greedy developers had the audacity to not include the disc in the Jotnar edition, in a pathetic attempt at scamming players to buy the game twice. I know Sony is stingy with multiplayer, but not stingy enough to give me at least co-op. When I complained about the lack of multiplayer in GoT and Returnal, those developers actually listened to my complaints. They added co-op multiplayer and endless modes. Sony Santa Monica have more money than Suckerpunch and Housemarque combined. There is literally no excuse as to why these lazy cheapskates can't give me online. I paid $70 for goodness sake, I should be entitled to online multiplayer at that outrageous price. If I don't get the multiplayer, then it will only prove that these developers are too greedy and lazy, greedier than EA. I would recommend this game until it is $10 or less or just wait until it's free on PS Plus.

Edit: After playing Callisto Protocol, I changed my mind. I'm changing my score from a 2 to a 0. Unskippable cutscenes along with boring masked loading screens is unacceptable for $70, not to mention that the things I initially praised this game for should've been in GOW 2018 in the beginning. I am infuriated with movie games.

Man this game starts off strong and then.......well saddens me to say but lost me with boring dialogue and slow repetitive combat. Give me the first 3 God of wars everyday over this. Thor is great but playing constantly as BOY just wasn't for me. Maybe I'm getting old but man outside of Ghost of Tsushima I'm disappointed with these play it safe tame ass easy "new gen" gams.

The story has a lot more depth than the GoW 2018, and is more captivating because of this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this game is AMAZING.... when you get to play as Kratos! It was hard to put a number on this one since you have to put aside the very high expectations along with some of the more disappointing choices made for this game. I do think the 2018, God of War was better, but its a bit unfair to compare as this one is a sequel and obviously borrows heavily from its predecessor rather than being completely created from the ground up like the previous game.

So starting of with the problems with this game so I can get my gripes out of the way. The reason I said the game is amazing when you play as Kratos is because you don't get to the entire time. The game forces you to play as Atreus in long portions. This would be fine if it wasn't the fact that he plays like a side character and these were by far the weakest parts of the game. Whoever in the writing room said hey our players love playing as this jacked out god of destruction lets force them to play as a child for a quarter of the game is a moron. I have the bad feeling they are pushing this series to drop Kratos and I have to say thats going to be a bad idea. Also the story is another part I would have to say has some issues. The story does have some awesome moments and overall is good, but there are plenty of sections where the story meanders or gets off track. Also there was a lot of controversy this game would suffer from a lot of the issues with "modern writing". I am happy to say for the most part this isn't the case, but it does feel like God of War has been "sanitized" for a lack of a better word. It does seem like the sexuality and violence has been toned down compared to the original trilogy of games. It may sound weird talking about an overly violent game anyways, but it does feel like this has been toned down to appease a certain audience. Lastly I would say there are a few tooo many puzzle in this game. I don't mind them and they can be a nice change of pace, but they could be cut down by about 40%. I'm playing this game for the action and cool combat encounters and most of the puzzles are so basic they just feel like they are adding time to the game for no reason.

So now what this game does right. The combat is smooth and fun and its nice this time you have a couple more weapons to work with that are both fun and have their own fun unique abilities. Obviously this game looks amazing I usually think of graphics as secondary, but this game was so pretty I can't lie. The story is good overall despite some odd choices at times and the vast majority of characters feel real with great personalities and attributes you feel for and get attached to.

Anyways that's my take on GOW: Ragnarok. A great games, but some odd choices hold this game back from being a 10/10. Hopefully the series continues Kratos's story and they continue this series in the right direction.

A game is something that allows us to feel like its characters are living in the past/future or oven reality in which you would not trip in any circumstances. A game creates possibilities to participate in activities you physically couldn't and dialogues you wouldn't ever hear.
That's what good a game does. But Ragnarok constantly makes me feel like I'm at work in an office or listening to a teenager who thinks his parents do not understand him, or in a mall hearing a fight of a couple arguing about how drunk a man was last night. Who in a sane mind decided to put this casual style of dialogue in Scandinavian folklore? Who ever thought it was a good idea to hear "Ummm, yeah, dad, like whateveeeer" all the time progressing through the game? That killed all the immersion you are waiting for from promised setting. Even GoW 2018, with all the changes they did compare to the original games, did not allow this kind of crap.

Do not get me wrong, the story is fine and appealing, but the dialogue does not belong to the time in which the game is set. And GoW is not a new Shrek cartoon where mixing fantasy and current urban dialogues was a thing.
Also, to add to setting thing. I do not believe that Thrud might put some shame on Thor in front of other warriors and get away with it. Neither do I believe in Atreus's typical teenage attitude whining that grown-ups do not understand him. That was not in mythological epos in the original games, and that was not even there in GoW 2018; why it had to be put in the latest game? That is not God of War, that is a modern-life sitcom. I would accept this in JRPG due to the ruled-out setting, but not in a game that changed its rules. The game did not help me to escape reality, but it did help to see modern life problems in fantasy. Thanks a lot.

Now, it would not be that harmful if everything else is fine. Which should be for a AAA Sony exclusive, right? Right?
Well, I've expected more from a game delivered in 2022. Invisible walls in the face of obstacles that should be easily bypassed by God are everywhere. Of course, that's just a regular game conditionality, but for a game in 2000, not a 2022 one. The platforming part is boring. Even the original series had some variations with freedom to climb and QTE scenes, but here in 2022 platforming is just an interactive loading screen, nothing more.

There are fewer changes that you would expect from a sequel, which is not bad, but all of them did not save from awful storytelling. 2018's GoW isn't the good old GoW we had, but it has grown along with us, but sequel made me think that I am a dumb teenager.

While the gameplay hasn't changed much compared to GoW 2018, the story has improved immensely. The characters have major development and we get to see brand new characters brought into the mix that all shine. There's much more to do in this game and the quality is higher than ever.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
