The combat is much like its predecessors but with a lot more combos and experimenting. That said however, there are glaring issues in the story which show signs of lazy writing and rushed story beats. Many plot points and details from the first game are never expanded upon in this game and many character motivations (mainly Freya) are quickly abandoned for story convenience. Many major threats and enemies like Odin or Thor whose immense power is alluded to in the first game, are lackluster and boring. This game's narrative simply could not live up to the hype and worldbuilding its predecessor built for it. The ending, While I won't get into too much conveys this perfectly. The time travel story element is never expanded upon is just an a**pull and the entire ending sequence boils down to a blackout, where you the player do not get to see anything. The combat is more fleshed out and gives you a lot more experimentation. That said, however, coming from the previous game's uninteresting enemies and most notably the absence of cool finishers and set pieces (think the god of war 3) God of war Ragnarok does not address these issues either. One thing I greatly wish they improved upon was exploration. Exploration is largely the same, while the levels are more fleshed out, they are empty and void of any interesting characters apart from the same souls providing fetch quests and the enemies of course. Some side bosses do have a sliver of that energy found in pre reboot God of war. Needless to say, If you did not like the combat in the previous game, there is not much for you here in God of War Ragnarok. Lastly, this game is clearly a PS4 game. Looking at exclusive PS5 games like Demons Souls or the new Final Fantasy 16, this game pales in comparison. The art direction is wonderful, cinematography and dialogue are great, but ultimately this game was a victim to what the notion it's predecessor built for it. In conclusion, God of War Ragnarok showcases impressive world crafting and graphics, but suffers from lazy writing, rushed story beats, and unexplored plot points. The lackluster enemies, disappointing ending, and unchanged exploration further detract from its overall experience. While the combat sees some improvements, it fails to reach the level of excellence set by its predecessor and other exclusive PS5 titles. Expand

Immortal gods are made to deliver some of the strangest, most casual lines like walking into someone's home and saying "Nice place." or complaining about their "moms" and how typical they are. Words like yep, yeah, kinda, sorta, pretty are used just like in the modern day. This is a strong contrast versus the original trilogy, and 2018's God of War.

Casual writing can have its place to break the tension or as comedic relief, but in Ragnarok the villains, main characters and side characters all engage in this kind of dialogue, making everything feel constantly comedic.

The graphics are gorgeous and the combat remains as good as in the previous game, but a game this focused on dialogue and story leaves ultimately little of value when the writing fails this much.

I played 3 hours and got bored, so $20/hour.
    Dialog is banal, combat repetitive.
    Touchy-feely no workie.
It's a B-movie on rails with underwhelming combat in the middle.

I really liked the previous work and thought that it would bring about breakthrough progress, but I was disappointed. In the same situation as the previous work, I was very upset that the decryption and map running became more and more. It seemed that I was playing with the Assassin's Creed. It was strange that many of the materials were reused in the plot arrangement.

God of War Ragnarok is proof that you can have the presentation of a lifetime and still completely drop the ball when it comes to gameplay. The juggling and lifeless AI really irritate me, and I find this game to be the easiest of big recent action games like this. If I was to choose between this or ER, it wouldn't be a tough call at all.

This game is nothing but a slightly upgrade version of god of war 2018. Same old boring gameplay, boring story, nothing revolutionary at all (that might not be the worse thing but it is not the best thing either). In conclusion, good to kill some time, but that is all

Disappointing on the PS5, it makes no use of the strong hardware of next-gen and traveling between realms is still 20-30 seconds which is a joke when it's near instant on Horizon, GoT and TLOU.

Even non-PS5 games make and take advantage of the hardware, Ragnarok doesn't. It also copy pastes 70% of the previous game with more enemy variet and... snow.

It's almost as if this game was planned DLC, but the developers turned it into a full game for more money. Why does this cost more than the PS4 version? This game still uses too many masked loading screens. $70 and it doesn't utilize the strength of the PS5.

The levels are boring and repetitive. It's as if the developers randomly added enemies into the environments and called it a day. Ubisoft Montreal can design levels better than these developers, and let me remind you that Ubisoft Montreal develop games at a faster rate. Which begs the question, why can't these developers make more frequent releases if they are just going to copy/paste and lazily design the levels? Keep in mind that this is only half of the game, meaning these lazy developers only had to do half of the work. Where is the freaking multiplayer? Sony Santa Monica are clearly too cheap and greedy to hire more developers. The physics are beyond horrible. The camera is too close. It's embarrassing that modders can give us a FOV option with ease, and these lazy developers can't even give us a simple feature. Boss fights are terrible.

For goodness sake, why won't these developers let me skip the cutscenes in their games? Enough already. I don't want to watch a stupid movie about Norse mythology. I just want to punch monsters. It just goes to show how out of touch these developers are. I don't know anyone that cares about Norse mythology, aside bookworms. Some of us just want to go straight to the gameplay. Besides, the only people that I hear talk about stories in video games are millennials that love classic rock. I'm pretty sure the rest of us want to play the game, not watch a movie. I had the game crash on me and I was forced to watch the same boring cutscene again. This is why it's important to let us skip cutscenes. Even Naughty Dog lets me skip cutscenes. It's one thing to write a trash story, but forcing me to watch it is pathetic. I paid $70 so I should be able to skip whenever I want.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. And the greedy developers had the audacity to not include the disc in the Jotnar edition, in a pathetic attempt at scamming players to buy the game twice. I know Sony is stingy with multiplayer, but not stingy enough to give me at least co-op. When I complained about the lack of multiplayer in GoT and Returnal, those developers actually listened to my complaints. They added co-op multiplayer and endless modes. Sony Santa Monica have more money than Suckerpunch and Housemarque combined. There is literally no excuse as to why these lazy cheapskates can't give me online. I paid $70 for goodness sake, I should be entitled to online multiplayer at that outrageous price. If I don't get the multiplayer, then it will only prove that these developers are too greedy and lazy, greedier than EA. I would recommend this game until it is $10 or less or just wait until it's free on PS Plus.

Edit: After playing Callisto Protocol, I changed my mind. I'm changing my score from a 2 to a 0. Unskippable cutscenes along with boring masked loading screens is unacceptable for $70, not to mention that the things I initially praised this game for should've been in GOW 2018 in the beginning. I am infuriated with movie games.

However the soulless pathetic dribble of unending dialogue and slow walking with a story that belongs in a present day Disney remake ensures that most people should avoid this stain on an amazing series. Think I will go back to playing Ghostwire Tokyo, which at least had some cultural consistency. But then the GOW franchise as a whole has a problem deciding what it wants to be. In a way the paint employed by Angrboda is symbolic of what happens when you randomly apply different colors. You don't get art, just an aimless mess. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although it is fairly cutscene heavy, the game starts out in the right direction almost immediately uniting you with both friends of old, and foe alike. The combat feels almost identical, however they decided to take away all the moves you learned in the last one only to have you earn them all over again, minus the few that they removed from the game which I honestly felt was a mistake. I honestly feel like the combat was better in the first one, but the transition moves are a nice addition and so are the blue circle parries. They give the combat a bit more of a personality. All the while they attempted to make an upgraded system for gear this time around but it still feels incomplete as they don't give you enough good materials for you to be able to level all your gear up. So what happens is you level the gear you like playing with and that takes away from the ability to level up others that are further behind to the point where there's just no point to change gear and try a different style. essentially you'll always have one or two pieces of gear that are better than the rest and it just doesn't feel rewarding enough to want to go back to try another. Lastly, the game forces you to use Atreus for large portions of the game and they're just so annoying that I couldn't help but turn the game off every time I'd get to one, and it would take me days before I would want to play it again. Even worse is when Atreus goes and meets Angrboda, you spend a solid hour or more riding a yak picking fruit. It's boring, and you literally don't learn anything new. It just goes over everything you've already learned and all of the wasted time picking fruit could easily been removed from the game and simply been a cutscene. It honestly felt like they just added them to break up the monotony and i hated every single minute of it. Thanks to Atreus I will never play through this game a 2nd time. I bought this game for God of War which is Kratos and I simply can't push through the annoying Atreus parts which essentially makes this game unplayable for me which means I wasted my money and have no choice but to rate this as such Expand

The combat is a step up compared to 2018, especially with the third weapon you get. Plenty of dialogue between characters made me laugh. Actor performances are mostly solid, and the music is grand. Graphics are exactly the same as 2018, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Unfortunately, this game suffers from lackluster writing. Many moments drag on too long, while others move much too

Unfortunately, this game suffers from lackluster writing. Many moments drag on too long, while others move much too fast. 2018 had about 10 total characters present, while this one throws another 30 or so at you and doesn't give you much time to get connected to them or be invested in them. Many characters sound out of place from this world and speak with modern mannerisms that break the immersion and make you feel like you're watching a Marvel movie.
Another big issue is the overall gameplay. The combat is great but not as great as in the Greek era. The traversal mostly has you slowly climbing up walls or crawling through tunnels as a way to hide a loading gate and have the PS4 stop processing one area and start processing the next. The puzzles are decent until your companions open their mouths and can't stop telling you exactly what to do and there is no option to turn them off. There are TONS of cutscenes in this one, and they feel more dramatic than they need to be, almost like the writers are begging you to feel the same emotion as the characters in these moments. This could have worked if the writing was tighter and more meaningful, but they decided to go with overemotional acting and sweeping music to try and make these scenes bigger than they really are. It's one of the cheapest tricks you can pull when making a movie. Maybe that's the core root of this game; it feels like an Avengers movie more than a God of War game.
In summary, they are stepping too far away from what made God of War unique and special back in the 2000s, and instead, they are copying trends from other successful games to try and appeal to a broader audience and make more sales. You could sum up this game with single words like "vanilla", "bland", and "unoriginal."
I don't care what happens to the franchise after this because at this point I'm done. I'm going to subscribe to PS Plus Premium so I can play the older games and reminisce how great God of War once was.
Edit: After playing God of War 1-3 and Ascension and then trying Ragnarok again, the tone of Ragnarok is unbearable with how many characters are goofy and crack jokes. It's in stark contrast to the tone they are trying to establish in the story with violence and death, and it's disgustingly jarring.
The story ended at 3 with Kratos killing himself to give hope to others. The Norse games are not canon.

It sure is beutiful and graphics and the delivery is absolutely top notch.

But dear god this game is so long just to finish the main campaign and even that was really hard. So much dialogue, walking, climbing repeated enemies. It just dragged on and on without any meaningful reasons. Not to mantioned all the side content that has bloated this game beyong belief.

Gameplay can defenitly be satisfying but the rpg loot/stats systems assosiated with gameplay doesnt do anything except waste players time to make game longer. So much handholding with the traversal. You cant freely grapple or jump. Everything is on rails.

I may have bought this game and santa monica.sony may think they already have sales. But if developers dont provide what consumers demand they will not get sales from thier next game. Rpg mechaniches are the worst things thats happened to games industry in my opinion. Shallow way to get you to be addicted.

Any game that makes me want to put the controller down isn't good. It may be the worst voice acting I've ever encountered, I can barely understand Kratos and Odin sounds like a random guy from New York, not very immersive.
I have no emotional connection to the character and therefore no reason to care if I die or fail a mission. I am not motivated to continue playing this game and am not encouraged that everyone thinks this a good title. Are there no good games on this platform? Should I just return the PS5?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decepcionante...

The portrayal of Odin and some of the other gods is just bizarre. I can see it being funny to have Richard Schiff as Odin in a meta comedy kind of story, but it doesn’t work in this melodrama, and lends to the anticlimax of the ending. The combat doesn’t make up for it; low stakes, it doesn’t get better, you don’t get big schools of mobs like in old school gow. When you’re underleveled, you do endless chip damage but dodge constantly to avoid dying in 3 hits ; it’s very uninspiring. The mobs are harder than the bosses, and the bosses are worse than in the prior game, which looks worse in retrospect. it is beautiful and has some good missions, and i think the basic combat system is decent and could have been used in a better game, but it’s possibly the worst PS exclusive, including Days Gone. I regret paying for it, and would wait for it to hit a subscription service or drop substantially. Expand

The default difficulty will have anyone breezing through every scenario without a single death. The harder difficulties increase enemy health a ludicrous amount, while ensuring that the offscreen projectile spam stops every combo (thanks to an insane lack of any dodge offset type of feature). The camera is atrocious and will neuter your characters movement when trying to switch targets. No replay value whatsoever due to long un-skippable talking and walking scenes. The single-camera presentation is ruined by an insane amount of menu usage all in the service of terrible RPG elements that hardly influence the combat.

The writing in this game is just as bad. No subtlety, every character says exactly how they feel. All plot points involve a MacGuffin, just like the last game. The vast majority of character conflicts come from a contrived lack of communication. Many of the character beats are poorly motivated as well. The story tries to explore themes of family and fate, but nothing new is said. Being an abusive person is bad. Letting other people decide your fate is bad. In gameplay, the characters yell the solution to every puzzle before giving the player a chance to observe the puzzle's elements. While in combat, the side characters constantly yell to use a shield strike to stun enemies. Any sense of immersion the game is trying to build is destroyed as soon as the player takes control.

There are also game-breaking bugs littered throughout. I feel like I have been tricked by both reviewers and developers into buying this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Characters are cheap and poor written (Heimdall, Atreus, Angrboda, freyr.............) This is a big minus when half of the game are cutcenes displaying the characters. Also the story gets boring as a consequence. Thor and Odin, maybe the most anticipated part about this game, are minimized to two hippies with no debt, and are combined not half as interesting as Baldur was. The nine realms feels like a little neighborhood where people can go wherever they please.

Gameplay mechanics is good, but its generally the same as GoW 2018. Especially the runic attacks are 90 percent, or more, the same as those from the previous game. The puzzles are poor made, with little variation and a simple design which doesn't require any amount of thought, but rather a walkthrough of the whole area to get a glimpse of some hidden crack or mark. There are scenes which are extremely outdrawn, when you just have to sit and watch two **** ride a cowthing for an hour or so, with no actual gameplay, and a massive chunk of zero budget dialogue. While "playing" through this part, it's a wonder I didn't quit.

The only good things about this game are a few good bossfights (though not on level with the prequel), SOME good artdesign, some good music.

In addition, the sidequests and grind are boring, repetitive, and a massive waste of time.

Note: Also I suppose this review will be removed by metacritic for no particular reason, exept corruption.

Here's my opinion about the game that I have been waiting for since rolling the credits on Gow2018 4 years ago. Note: this won't be spoiler free (you have been warned) I really never expected this level of incompetency from Santa Monica studio. They took whole 5 years to make this game (same time it took them Gow2018 which was built from the ground) and still couldn't top it or even be on the same level with it.

My biggest issue with this game is the story. So many questions from the last game left unanswered. At the beginning of the game Kratos is angry about not knowing what Faye wanted, but then it's never mentioned again through the story and we didn't know why she wanted her ashes spread in the peak of Jotunheim and why she hid that she's a giant.

After spending the entirety of the last game hyping Kratos vs Thor, I expected his fight to be insane and at least top that of Baldur.
But his fight was meh, Especially at the end.
Odin comes across as a coward especially against Kratos. He doesn't have the All Father vibes at all and doesn't show any feats of power aside from backstabbing Brok and Thor. The final fight against Thor and Odin felt more like a moral lecture from the writers rather than what the characters would actually do.

Ragnarök is poorly executed with many of it's very important event's missing for no reason.

They lied about a lot happening in this final chapter and lied about the pandemic not affecting the game. The story is so rushed and all the build up and foreshadowing from the last game went to nowhere. I honestly can't see what part of this game took them whole 4.5 years to make and the help of other 9 studios.

Do I recommend this game ? Yes. Though don't be fooled by the title (Ragnarök) this game has very little to do with Ragnarök.
Is it a masterpiece ? No. Did it live up to the hype and deliver all what the devs promised ? No.

Does what it does correctly, but the hand holding is inexcusable. Devs need to stop catering to the lowest common denominator and realize that most people can actually grasp very basic logic in puzzle solving. Prompting the player literally seconds after a small challenge presents itself is baffingly bad.

In your game it’s barely present I could not hear it because you guys keep the character talking that’s painfully annoying, boring and repetitive Make the music give the place spirit and live and happen by making loud and clear to listen there’s to many norse good music there use them instead of making weak forgettable ones repetitiveness this game is so repetitive You will do the same things again and again and again you go from point A to Point B then solve some puzzles then fights some enemies and solve and fight with the same boring fighting style also the enemies are weak and stupid You all casuals who doesn’t know anything about what makes a good game fun and great should not rate this game 10s and what not

Go try some good ones first then try this again Here have some God Hand first game sense it has the same camera angles yea story, graphics are bad but gameplay still good and it beats Ragnarok in that regard because the enemies are actually designed around the player dodge, break guard mechanics Ragnarok enemies designed to be a sand bags Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Rising, Vanquish, Devil May Cry, And of course God Of War the old titles

All of those have a much better feel of combat an mechanic and an actual fun gameplay they are not perfect every one of them has it’s flaws but they will offer you the action gaming experience Ragnarok lacks Story they immersive they say Go play visual novel or some interactive games like the walking dead if you love stories so much and prefer them over actual fun gameplay and I assure you The Walking Dead story is so much better then Ragnarok

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GoW 2018 was amazing in many aspects, while lacking in others. Story was great, depth of character was great, combat was great (perhaps not ideal fo h'n's fans) etc. It lacked enemy variety, boss fights and half the realms. Ragnarok provides on most.

However, it feels like the devs tried to fit so much in a game that it ended up feeling sloppy or not as polished as its predecessor. I liked some side quests, they were decent. Berzerker fights are an adequate replacement of the valkyries for example. Though the squirrel was incredibly boring and out of place. This isn't Marvel. 2018 was a drama while this one feels way lighter. A similar example is Lunda, the new dwarf. She feels really superficial, forced and there is nothing to create a bond between her and the player. And that could be a summary for the whole game. Freyr is shallow and cocky, 'Tyr' was pathetic and really contributed next to nothing, the guy who used to be the boar (WTF santa monica) was so out of place and of no actual importance, Thrud is boring and in general all character have only one side and that's it.

As far as the story is concerned, it feels like it was written not because the devs had something in their mind but because they had to release something about ragnarok. The game tries to touch so many things though it ends up not actually touching most of them. The guy who was the boar. Why was he important? why couldn't he be just a regular guy and he had to be the boar? The shrine at the end of the game. WTF does it show that's so important? Why and how did Faye opposed her people? How by hidding their future she allowed them to shape it (regardless of them doing exactly what she hid from them). Why doesn't Atreus share the fact that he saw his father die with Kratos? Also, in many occassions people reffer to the prophecy while appart from Faye being a giant, Atreus being Loki and Kratos dying in the end, nothing else was shown.

Although the worst part must be playing as Atreus. The most indifferent character ever. Archery rarely does any good and, while holding only a bow, most of the times you end up spamming melee attacks. He goes to Asgard and uses Thor in fetch quests that actually have little meaning. This guy killed his two sons and yet Thor doesn't do anything while they go on missions together. Odin, the all-father needs the help of a teenager to unravel the secrets of the mask. The BOY does so in a matter of seconds while Odin has been on it since the dawn of time. How does the fire giant screws over prophecy and becomes ragnarok by sheer will and the blades of chaos? How does the Ragnarok being comes to end? How did Angrboda shape the ending as she said? What happens with the giants trapped in the marbles? All this is bad writing.

Finally, the armor sets are so few and all so **** ugly! 2018 had some ugly pieces but some were ok. In ragnarok it's like they held a competition in the office and the 10 ugliest armors would make it in the game.

Its a long boring bad movie for you to collect things inside using Kratos to sell you this stuff

Sadly, it's a continuous misdirection action game. It's a shame they didn't embrace the old series core combo system. GoW3 is still the best God of War overall.

Just a copy and paste from GOW 2018. It would of been better as a DLC to begin with

I have never seen such a large amount of hand holding in an open world game. Stopped after 2 hours. Visually stunning, definitely the best looking game this year.

Who wrote the script?! I paid 70 bucks for a female fantasy! This is not GOD OF WAR: RAGNAROK, this is GOD OF WAR: Tears and Drooling. The mechanics and graphics of the game are almost unchanged.
    DLC for $ 70 with a **** plot.

I don't see how this gets the same rating as the last god of war. It's a drag, poorly written, boring, full of invisible walls and slow walking, hidden loading screens, slapstick characters and lame characters with "heroic" moments, horrible and long dialogue. Tries too hard being a Last of Us game than a God of War game. Sure, there is a lot of character development now since Kratos wants escape his past and everything, but this is also still a God of War game where fans expect epic battles with gods, brutal kill animations and badass Gods. But instead, we get a game where for the majority of the time you walk, travel, ride and other transports and talks. LOTS AND LOTS OF TALKING. There is a place called „Ironwood“ and it‘s the most boring 3 hours in God of War History. Even the Gods are all washed up disappointmentss from what we have heard troughout the tales in 2018. And the only thing worse than their characters are their designs. Gone are the days where Gods were designed to look powerful and threatening, fitting for the stories told about them and are replaced now with „realistic, down to earth depictions“ yay...

And that’s all excluded by the extremely rushed writing of the game. A character that tries to kill you for over 3 years starts siding with you within the first few hours of the game. The actual Ragnarok event only last for at most 1 hour and a newly introduced character gets so little screentime before he sacrifices himself even thou there was more than enough time for him to get to safety too.

God of War is dead and whatever this is isn’t God of War anymore, it’s the MCU‘s version of it with the plan for Santa Monica Studios being to be like Naughty Dog.

    Worse than GoW 2018:

    - combat system
    - camera
    - story
    - still bugs

    better than GoW 2018:

    - none

    Absolute disappointment!

Cutscenes all over the place, I lost interest very quickly as the game was nothing new and I could of easily been playing the original Gow. Expand

    Dear AAA developers,
Please make your npcs shut the hell up. This game is literally hand hold simulator. Deveiopers treat u like baby. They do not believe the player can solve simple puzzle or notice any detail on screen!
I'm giving Gow Ragnarok award for most underwhelming experience of 2022

If you dont care to make something enjoyable to play, and just want to tell a story, just make a movie next time. Youtube is making playing sony's games irrelevant. Just watch someone playing and save your money. Looks like another assassins cringe series is born. And kratos have a severe case of amnesia as he forgot everything he learned from the previous game. He sorta dull eh?

    Bad game.
    It's impossible to skip scenes. Why did they choose that? The scenes are boring and the story is dull, predictable and made for children;
There are lots of the same puzzles. They are boring as well. You're gonna play 10 hours and watch 30 mandatory hours. Puzzles crash with action. If you want to play a good action adventure game, this is not the best choice. The game is:

The game is: fight 2 minutes, solve a 5 minute puzle, watch a 10-15 cut scene over and over and over again.
Too much talking. If you want silence, the head talks, the boy talks, the woman talks, Kratos talks, they talk together, alone, dead or alive, there are lots of unnecessary dialogues all the time.

The game looks like a bad mix of Zelda, Tomb Raider, Uncharted and for the optional content, Souls. The most interesting part is: there is no God of War on it. It's not an epic game with epic scenes. If you want action, the game gives you puzzles. If you want to explore, the game gives you cutscenes.

Sadly, it's an AAA that seems to be a BBB. Same formula as its predecessor, too much longer, not better.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
