Some fun but dissapointing for a God of War game. Story isnt great and seems like a waste of excellent source material. I guess this is the character arc (vengeance isn't the answer) they're going for but it isn't good. Kratos is more "the anti god of war" in this game. The missions you play as Atreus are boring as hell. Atreus plays as a more powerful character than Kratos which doesn't make sense. If the creators don't like Kratos and want to focus on Freya or Atreus why not just create a new game without diluting the God of War? There are some good missions and battles which make it worth playing, but this is not a "game of the year " by any stretch of the imagination. Expand

Not great, not bad, maybe good, but rather mediocre. A major dissapointment for me cause i was expecting much more. After 4 years since the last game this one feels almost the same.

They just had to keep doing what they were doing with 2018 God of War, but instead, they decided to make the game more cartoonish and colorful. The atmosphere is completely destroyed, the UI is terrible, and the game overall feels clunkier and cheaper

God of War: Ragnarok manages to maintain the quality of the previous game. While the story is not as strong as the last game, it is still intriguing. The gameplay is not as innovative, but that is fine, since the last game had perfect gameplay as is. So, while this seems like a minor upgrade, the previous game was so good that I didn’t mind playing more of it.

    Bigger is Not Always Better
Let me start by saying this was a GREAT Game. God of War (2018) is one of my favorite games of all time. Ragnarok was a great game, but not the masterpiece that 2018 was. God of War 2018 was art. This game was not art.
The story in this game was strange. It was overly long and drawn out in some sections, while being too slight and shallow in others.

Characters and backstories were introduced and expanded, and then never re-visited. This game was not directed by Cory Barlog, and it seems to be missing his finer touch. I have finished the campaign and yes the game is longer than 2018, but since the storytelling was a bit uneven it also feels "shorter" or "lighter" than the first game.
My biggest gripe about this game is how certain story elements from the first game are completely changed or ignored in the name of "setting your own destiny" in the second one. This is an interesting idea, but knowing that certain story parts of 2018 are ignored in Ragnarok makes the big reveals in 2018 lose their power. It deflates the story of the first game because the big moments don't actually carry into Ragnarok the way you thought they would. This feels lazy to me and gives the impression that the writers wrote themselves into a corner and could not get out of it. Again, I wonder how much Barlog's lack of direction played a role here. This game felt much less like a labor of love and more like a video game.

The level design was also strange. Yes they were visually breathtaking. No argument here! Wonderful! However, they felt very linear. Very constructed. Each level is a series of separate rooms that require you to slide through cracks in the wall that mask loading times. This disrupts your traversal and makes it constantly feel like a video game. Again, missing Barlog's love of the series makes Ragnarok feel more like a video game and less like a wonderful story.
I found myself getting turned around or lost several times throughout this campaign. This can of course be linked to my incompetence, but I never remember this happening during 2018. There were also puzzles to solve and chests to open that required tricks I never would have figured out if I hadn't gone to YouTube. I never had to do this in 2018. There is a line between "engaging to figure out" and "cannot be figured out" that 2018 walked so well. This game unfortunately misses that line at times.

The level-up process was also very strange. The load-out menu has been completely changed. It is annoying and cumbersome. I often found myself accidentally closing out the menu when I was just trying to go back one section. Relics and runes are hard to understand because you can only use a few at a time rather than spread them out across your armor. The load-out menu also looks cramped and poorly designed. Armor does not show all its stats on one screen, you have to scroll and then it reorganizes the armor based on strength. It is very annoying and hard to understand. Minor, but certain words in the menu are abbreviated rather than spelled out. This takes you out of the game experience. And what if new played don't know what the abbreviations stand for?

    pros

    - the game looks wow just wow the engine Santa Monica use for their games is just beautiful

    - the combat is a loooot better than the previous game

    - the music is just next level

    - map design although taken lot from the previous game is still pretty good

    - some of the designs for the Nordic gods is just perfect like Thor

    - really liked the standalone gameplay with Atreus he is to cool to play with

    - the boss battles in this game are a huge improvement over the previous one

    - they finally removed the useless side quests they added in the first game and just did 1 big side quest to every map which is just THANK YOU

    cons (oh boy)

    - writing is just trash i mean the beginning was 10 out of 10 don't get me wrong but after that the game just slows down and feels like a chore to play but back to the writing why is every encounter with the gods ends up in lets talk even the game sometimes contradicts itself by making Kratos or Atreus speak mid boss fight and even the boss will just straight up yell shut the f up why is there no bad guys ? the game tries so hard to show us the players every gods point of view and shows us that there are no bad guys just to shift the whole point they tired to prove at the end.
as you can see i could talk about the Disney like writing of this game for hours just because of how ridiculous and childish everything was

    - a lot of re used assets and enemies , felt like i was playing the expansion of the first (2018) game

    - when i said most of the Nordic god designs are good i especially said most because there are some that are just what the actual f is this this is not how this god looks why is that they nailed the designs in god of war 3 of the Greek pantheon but couldn't do it now ?

    - the maps feel small and don't really represent the realms in their scale at least in my opinion every realm has 2 3 small maps that combine and that's it really felt like im doing small dungeons and not exploring realms

    - ending had me feeling confused and weirded out no continuation no nothing just ok that's it bye
    with no proper send off

    - they finally gave us a third weapon but it felt like i could use more just feels weird to have only 3 weapons in a god of war game

in conclusion as i recognize with a lot of triple A games the gameplay is fun and cool but the writing is not good at all game felt like small messy expansion to the already decent with potential game that was god of war 2018 and that's why my final score to this game is a 7.5 out of 10 i would recommend it to new comers to the series or to people that want a game to pass the time but for people who played the og series as i said in my review of the previous game GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK doesn't scale up to the standards that the originals build up to

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The other half of the story, repetitive, open world fatigue, shallow story, technically a last gen (PS4) game.

That's how I would describe it in as few words as possible. If you liked it and disagree, well good for you, but you may want to read further what a good and entertaining game with a greek god in norse mythology could have been like.

So, God of War 2018 was good, why rate this as a failure? It's the same game with the other half of the story, isn't it? Correct! Why do I have to go through all the grinding again? What does it add to the story? Why should I play it?

Here is my point of view: God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok as a Playstation 4 game in 2018 till 2022 with 20 hours of action packed core playtime? _Fantastic game!_ Not the most inventive of revolutionary one, and I would accept mid 2010's graphics in 2022. Graphics have gotten so detailed and rendering so technically flexible that it is fine to play older games while not feeling to be thrown back to the stone ages. But that never really mattered for games with good story telling either did it? Correct again! While I was excited about the 2018 game and its open world, times have changed, personally, but also looking back at similar games, they are just chores. If you don't want to make a career on gaming and you are just looking for good entertainment, well the industry does not care about you it seems. And that is disappointing. Do I want to play 50 or more open world games with all their chores and little sprinkles of story or do I want to have a successful life and career and and peace of mind about my pension and that I was an active part of society?

Hey, I play Fortnite without audio, which is grinding, which can be somewhat competitive and fun while being very much repetitive, but I can also listen to news while playing it (ha!). God of War 2018 was lengthy, much babbling, much grinding, shallow open world mechanics like you have seen in other games where you have to run circles because you can't access them now, and also aspects you forgot about the 2018 game so you are even more running around in circles. repetitive ad nausea! 20 hours of main story well executed, beautifully explained in consumable sized chunks with 80 to 200 hours of game play in ONE game where you could switch between the state of the world in 2018 and 2022? GREAT! Other games can pull it off (to some degree). And also, please, a bit of breath in the action packed scenes. some characters where apparently there during Ragnarok but the "camera" and everything else was shaking so much that I didn't see anything and I felt that I missed something important. But that's a problem of a game, of game designers and story telling or explaining that there is not enough focus on what is important.

Please get rid of skill trees in action games. Filling out an excel sheet in between missions is not immersion!

I love games and story telling, I loved some parts of this game, but it was so stretched thin that I think it wasn't worth the time I invested. And that is bad. But too many people and journalists seem to be fine with how things are and that's that.

Constantly the same snot that Sony has been serving as a "game" for years. Unfortunately, it's more of an overpriced movie. That means I was allowed to make a difference to Kratos and trigger some Quick Time Events. This has nothing to do with GAming but watching a movie.Constantly the same snot that Sony has been serving as a "game" for years. Unfortunately, it's more of an overpriced movie. Full of anticipation I started God of War Ragnarök and was allowed to play about 10 minutes in the first hour of play. That means I was allowed to make a difference to Kratos and trigger some Quick Time Events. This has nothing to do with GAming but watching a movie.

The graphics are very good for Playstation 5 conditions and look very detailed at first. Unfortunately, however, it is only decoration. The graphics do not hide the emptiness of the game world and the lack of depth. From time to time you see some birds and abandoned fruit stands and the like. Many objects are really just decoration. They cannot even be destroyed and have been used again and again in the manner of copy past.

Also, the game doesn't offer much of a game. The levels are tube-like. The game offers little urge to discover. On the contrary: It leads you completely through the game world. If you really do not know how to get ahead, your companion will immediately comment on what to do. Sony doesn't trust its gamers to face even the slightest challenge. And these situations hardly occur, because almost everything that is relevant in the game world has been highlighted in color or flashes.

From time to time you get into a kind of pseudo open world in the game world. Don't be fooled. There are small sections that you then leave, collect your collectibles and complete boring side quests that offer no appeal.

The combat system is solid and basically the same as its predecessor. The enemy variants are unfortunately very banal and are rather low. This reinforces the feeling that you are constantly experiencing the same thing in God of War Ragnarök. Run a few meters, some enemies pop up, you knock them down, collect the same loot over and over again, level skills that are rather trivial and improve your equipment. The only thing that carries the game is the Story.

The story here is still the best thing about the game. One would like to know what Kratos, Artreus and his mother are all about. Unfortunately, Sony is exaggerating here again. Yes, violence is part of God of War but in some situations you think Kratos the macho just wants to prove to another macho how great he can be. Some story plots in the game are probably only there to satisfy children's fantasies of a bully.

It's bitter what happened to the Sony Playstation under Jim Ryan aka Lie Cry.

After Horizon Forbidden West had already disappointed me immensely and the game felt like a DLC or ADD ON. God of War Ragnarök makes the same mistake. Sony has been making the mistake here for years. One can only hope that those responsible at Sony will finally step down and that Sony will finally allow MORE DIVERSITY and INNOVATION in their games. Here you can only praise Microsoft and Nintendo. Whether new game series, new gameplay mechanics or simply more variety of genres.

    - Until now I'm collecting eight Chaos Flames but I could use only four of them. So my Chaos Blades are on Level 4 and I can't upgrade the Chaos Blades to the actually maximum.
    - Two of the berserkers I can't beat because I can't hit them with any weapon. There is no damage and they kill me insteadly. So I can't get to King Hrolf and get this trophy.
    - I have collected all the 48 ravens but the message when I want to open the last chest is: You have to collect 45 ravens to open this chest. So I can't open the last chest and I don't know what happens then

I could discribe many errors more in this game, but the named ones are the baddest.

I was so excited to play this game on PS5 because part 4 was incredible good. But this part has disappointed me so hard. It is unplayable for me and I have unstall it now.

This series is going off in a completely new and completely worse direction. The mass appeal of Kratos has always been that he's a man driven by vengeance and rage. The story this time around is laughably convoluted and the pacing is just atrocious. There are HOURS of unskippable walking sections and cutscenes that have you stuck listening to some of the sappiest dialogue imaginable. Sounds more like an ethics lecture for elementary school children than centuries old beings discussing the consequences of their actions.

combat is still much the same as 2018 but feels more restrictive. A few late game abilities will reward you for just spamming the same move over and over.

The creativity and roots of this franchise are gone and I dread the thought of Santa Monica's next game after all the smoke the critics have blown up their muffs.

I don't give a 10 because there is no "perfect" but certainly the Nordic God of War series borders on perfection.
Anyway, I don't think it's worth paying 70/80$, I paid 40$ and it was more than worth it.

Although it is fairly cutscene heavy, the game starts out in the right direction almost immediately uniting you with both friends of old, and foe alike. The combat feels almost identical, however they decided to take away all the moves you learned in the last one only to have you earn them all over again, minus the few that they removed from the game which I honestly felt was a mistake. I honestly feel like the combat was better in the first one, but the transition moves are a nice addition and so are the blue circle parries. They give the combat a bit more of a personality. All the while they attempted to make an upgraded system for gear this time around but it still feels incomplete as they don't give you enough good materials for you to be able to level all your gear up. So what happens is you level the gear you like playing with and that takes away from the ability to level up others that are further behind to the point where there's just no point to change gear and try a different style. essentially you'll always have one or two pieces of gear that are better than the rest and it just doesn't feel rewarding enough to want to go back to try another. Lastly, the game forces you to use Atreus for large portions of the game and they're just so annoying that I couldn't help but turn the game off every time I'd get to one, and it would take me days before I would want to play it again. Even worse is when Atreus goes and meets Angrboda, you spend a solid hour or more riding a yak picking fruit. It's boring, and you literally don't learn anything new. It just goes over everything you've already learned and all of the wasted time picking fruit could easily been removed from the game and simply been a cutscene. It honestly felt like they just added them to break up the monotony and i hated every single minute of it. Thanks to Atreus I will never play through this game a 2nd time. I bought this game for God of War which is Kratos and I simply can't push through the annoying Atreus parts which essentially makes this game unplayable for me which means I wasted my money and have no choice but to rate this as such Expand

    Beautiful graphics
    Cool armour sets
Odin - love every second he was on screen
Thor - just like Odin, big screen presence
    Sindri and Brok

    Cons:
Too much backtracking over huge expanses/corridors for mindless collectibles and uninspired side quests
Mimir - STFU (especially each time I collect those stupid "Pond" elements and during combat)
    Freya - STFU
    Atreus - STFU
    Angrboda - Annoying character
Combat - feels floaty, no damage feedback (half the time I had no idea I was taking damage), feels spammy
Story - being a completionist and doing my best to grind through all the collectibles made me lose interest in an already weak and uninspiring story. Just not invested enough in the story due to Mimir, Freya, Atreus all being absolutely annoying.
Enemies - Annoying to fight against. Which ones? ALL OF THEM!!
    Useless map
    Cluttered UI/ menu system
    Stupid, irritating, irrelevant puzzles
    Annoying purple arrow bubble nonsense

Overall, a supremely disappointing sequel which started out wow-ing me but by the end, ended up frustrating and annoying me beyond measure.

God of War 2018 was a masterpiece because of its simplicity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cons:
-The title of the game is Ragnarok, however Ragnarok is only the last 20 minutes of the main story, 99% of the game is more about Fimbulwinter
-"Giant stuff" aka we writers just do whatever we want whenever we want, and we don't have to make sense or be consistent, or establish anything prior
-The camera, way too zoomed in for the combat
    -Plotlines that go nowhere
-Random characters suddenly dying all heroically with 0 prior development, or being introduced with no reason or purpose, go nowhere, serve nothing
-The 2nd fight with Thor was underwhelming as hell, with less epic and scale than the first fight. Literally everything was less. Didn't live up to the incredible hype built up around it at all, like c'mon, it was supposed to be the titans of the verse clashing
-Generally the invasion of Asgard is lame, all the cool stuff happens in the background while you're running around killing same old tired enemies in small arenas
-Freyr's character is just terrible, he's more marvel than the squirrel
-The new Valk queen has much smaller moveset than Sigrun, not nearly as developed
-Atreus’ movelist is not developed enough, it starts off fine, even good, but becomes stale starting from mid-game. He has 1 weapon that has smaller moveset than 1 weapon with Kratos, even though Kratos has 3

-Angrboda is black for no reason. Kratos and Atreus are not a counterargument to this, for a simple reason that Kratos ISN'T norse, he's a Greek immigrant, it's not like they took a norse character and made him Greek, while Aterus is obviously half-greek because his father is. It's a fundamental difference. There was needed an explanation on why Angrboda is black, some south African god immigrated to Scandinavia and mixed with giants just a generation ago or something. I'm not against them taking creative freedoms, including with heritages of characters, but there has to be a reason and a purpose. The way it stands she's just black out of nowhere for no reason. The same is true for the Boar
-Angrboda, she's also a plot device that just appears whenever and wherever the plot needs her
-Sif has an ugly square face(personal gripe i admit)
-No breasts in the game. This can be a valid complaint, the franchise used to deliver on this front. I don't understand why they stopped? Because they were trying to make the games more mature? Then well deliver it in more of a mature way. I personally didn't like how old games approached nudity and erotica. There was a space for improvement, instead they just completely removed this side of the series(Have Atreus make Sif hold a door while naked, but also not let her die - progress!)

-Mimir unironically turned into Memer, character regression
-Kratos might as well join the avengers at this point
-Kratos:"To win in a war you must be ready to sacrifice everything!", literally 15 minutes later "I was wrong, we won't sacrifice these randoms". I get the idea, but the pacing, the execution.. it just doesn't work
-Marvel type of dialogue all throughout the game
-Tyr was ACTUALLY ALIVE, for NO **** reason, just WHY?
-Freya is annoying as hell, even her mid-combat dialogue, she backseats all the time, with very annoying mannerism. She's also old and ugly, which doesn't fit because she's supposed to be the goddess of fertility. I also don't like that she forgave Kratos, but i was on Baldur's side in their conflict in the first game. To the end she refused to understand him, which is one of the reasons why he ended up dead, her allowing Baldur to try to kill her was her fundamentally misunderstanding what he wants from her. The game never calls her out on this

-Odin kills Thor for literally no goddamn reason, a plot contrivance in attempt of portraying him as completely unlikable intrinsic evil. The entire situation is a plot contrivance, it's just trash. First Kratos and Thor are fighting and even when it's clear that Thor won't be winning Odin doesn't interfere at all, even though Thor is his best shot at getting rid of Kratos, he just lets Kratos defeat Thor and spare him. What was the plan with coming RIGHT AFTER the fight and starting to nag on Thor, even though Thor just lost? Clearly the best course of actions would be to interfere before Thor lost and tag team Kratos. Generally Odin was turned into senile old ****** the last stretch of the game for the sake of the cheap plot the writers wanted to tell
-Why did Odin not tell Heimdall about the Draupnir Spear? Why did Odin allow Heimdall to leave Asgard even though it was the safest place possible, and the risk of him failing was Ragnarok itself? Why did he even allow him to carry the ******* horn with him? Obviously because writers wanted Ragnarok to happen, and didn't know any other way to do it without turning Odin into a ******

    Pros:
They're obvious, i mean i gave the game 6/10 even though i complained about it non-stop above. The 2018 was great, so with that kind of foundation it was never going to be trash

Great game. The reason I bought a PS5, after being blown away by GoW 1 on PC: I didn't want to wait for the sequel. Very much the same gameplay as the first, this goes for the graphics too. But it's a story game so can't fault it too much there. Very nice to play as many other characters rather than the two protags.

Too many moments were unearned. It would have been better if the story focused more on a few characters, particularly Thor and Odin, instead of getting sidetracked so much.

Ironically, getting sidetracked is actually where I thought the game worked best. The best parts of the game were in the large side quest areas like on vanaheim, when it could be just a game and not a story-game. It excels at that, but it left me disappointed because God of War (2018) was one of the best combinations of story *and* game I’ve ever experienced.

I did see some complaints that the users didn’t like the depictions of the Aesir Gods, if you know these 2 latest GOW games then you’ll know they have a heavy emphasis on various film making techniques, and I know that if you want people to care for your characters then you need to make them care for them, or at the very least care about them and actually give a damn. This game isn’t perfect and the points I have are mainly nitpicks;
The exclusion of Jormungandr, he appears a couple hours into the game and at the very end and the fights between him and Thor is hyped up throughout these latest 2 games. But the fight is cut down to a 10 second cutscene where Jorm is sent back in time and it isn’t talked about. The pacing isn’t great where in 2018’s version the exploration of different places and jumping around different realms feels more fluent, in this iteration it feels very repetitive it didn’t really affect me much in my play through but was something I did pick up on.
Finally the climax, I have seen some people saying it lacked spectacle which I do agree with. But the scene where Kratos blows Ghallorjorn more than makes up for that, that is the moment where I realised this should of won GOTY.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ragnarok has to be One of the top 3 in the story-driven games that were released this year, and despite the great similarity between it and its predecessor, it outperformed the latter in several points.
Firstly, the graphics have become much better than the previous part, and I personally liked it very much, but it could have been a better increase if the game had supported Ray tracing, and better lighting in some of the Cutscenes, but in general, the graphics are perfect and the clarity is excellent, especially when you feel like watching The world from above with the amount of immersive atmosphere you feel.
Secondly, and the most important thing, the story, frankly, the story is great and befits the level of the previous part and more, the characters are very well written, and the interaction between them is dynamic and lively, and each one has his own prestige and the way he imposes himself on the screen is more like a movie than a mere game, which is an element that Very few games know how to master, especially adventure games. The thing I didn't like or rather annoyed me was that the game felt a bit heavy in presenting the events for the first six hours, and contained many moments that felt rather just begging for your attention and emotions, let alone other instants that felt completely unnecessary and just pumping up the game time, regardless, But everything from the start to the end was pretty good, I would have also loved if the story ended in a more tragic way, but maybe sometimes it is for the best, and the ending was bittersweet for both Atreus and Kratos, and we saw a very emotional side of the latter.
Thirdly, the gameplay, the gameplay is similar if it was not the same as the first part, with additions whose numbers are small, but their impact is great and radical, the world has become bigger, better, and diverse, the enemies, unlike the previous part, have become much more difficult and diverse, and you feel the difficulty, focus and the heaviness of planning in fighting each type of them that needs a specific strategy in order to defeat them. I loved playing as Atreus and how it was very different from Kratos’ style, the thing that gave the game a new fresh breath. The optimization is quite mid, but it is possible that I did not count this because I could not download the Day one patch, I encountered almost three glitches only, but none was able to ruin the experience for me
In summary, the game gets a solid 9, and that's it.

Clearly the best game this year, the graphics is awesome, even on the ps4, I had to stop playing and staring the environment, it's that beautiful. The Norse gods are acting like Americans, but other than that I have no complaints. Wish it had a new game+ like the 2018 gow, so that I could beat the game again on max level, but they may add this feature later.

I think this game is overrated as hell but nothing beats Witcherino 3 in this regard. Of course still a great game. Kudos to developers! Again much better than Witcherino 3 and Wokebug 1977 combined!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact that people consider this a 10/10 title is a perfect reflection of the state of video games today. The only 10/10 thing about this game is the graphics and performance on PS5. That's it.

Artreus has somehow become an even more intolerable character than in the previous game. They choose to go the Marvel route with all of the "villain" Gods. None of them serious, none of them epic, all of them full of **** one liners and seemingly the same personality. Odin is a small old man that comes off like Peter Baylish from Game of Thrones, it's so anti-climatic.

Additionally the first part of the game is all about Tyr and finding Tyr. Man, I wish we never found him because he was as much of a dissapointment as Odin. Boring, annoying, peace loving and all around just a poorly written character. Honestly, almost everyone and everything is annoying about this game.

Mimir and Brock - two characters I loved from the first game are completely overbearing this time around and shove their humor in your face. It's just too much.

Narrative of the year? How does a game that's 50% of the dialogue "I need to save Artreus. I only care about Artreus. I don't care this is about Artreus" really wins that award. **** hilarious.

I put 30 hours into this game, it's a gorgeous but hallow follow up to what I thought was an enjoyable God of War 2018 title. There is one new weapon in this game and the move set for the Axe and Chains are largely unchanged.

6/10 and I think that's being generous for the effort from the last title. Buy on Sale.

How about Loki lies and betrays Thor helping GOW kill him (because thats what Loki does). The tragedy is Loki leaves his father in the end because they see the world different, but the father does not change, he stays resolute in his distain for gods as he sit's on a throne, e.g. Conan sitting on his throne adorned in power and bad ass-ness.

I`m a huge fan of the God of War series and i get why they made the last one more for everyone, but, i didn´t expect they would cripple it like that.
Graphics are amazing, gameplay is good, production is good, but everything else, is very very bad.
Map designs are bad, back then, everyone hated games for doing this, remember Final Fantasy 13? Got smashed for it, now it seems to be ok for

Only 3 weapons, enemies are reused and the variety is again very small, barely any big boss fights again which everyone loved from the old games.
And the cherry on the cake, the characters and dialogues.
I mean....wtf??? I dislike every single character in this game, except maybe Mimir. Everyone is touching everyone with velvet gloves, apologizing constantly for everything and everyone is a loser in some way. It feels like a big therapy group and everyone is making sure not to trigger the others, a pathetic showcase of gods, giants and badasses!
They even treat the player like a little kid with the constent comments they make.
It makes me so sad, that it seems to be so easy these days to make "a masterpiece", but this, this is NOT a masterpiece, at all!

I can't recommend this game more. Okay, so let's get that out of the way. I loved the combat, so freaking good! The graphics and characters, the writing and acting... you don't often see better. Buut... Although I know I'll be in the minority here... I can't help this feeling after getting to the credits and feeling deep disappointment. The world design throughout the majority of the game felt like I was playing on a set with set dressing, I didn't feel like I was in a living and breathing world. I felt... like I was on a set. There were many incredible moments, jaw dropping sections in the game. But do you remember the third game and how just utterly epic that was from start to finish? I mean, it didn't let up the entire way through. Where were all the god fights? Yes, I know there were much more than the 2018 one, but if this was truly the ending to the Norse Sequence like the developers said... Where were they all? Where were all the norse gods? I know, I know! Trust me, I'm giving the game a darned 9 for crying out loud. I loved it! Okay. But still, they were too scared to make any big choices and just... the ending! Oh my gosh, I think I may have just deeply disliked it. I went in depth with spoilers and explanations in my other review on the other platforms but won't here because there isn't enough space.
I don't know. I can feel a great love for this game, while at the same time be feeling a deep disappointment for what I had hoped would happen in the story.
This game is very comfortably sitting in 4th place on my personal game of the year list. When I think back on God of War Ragnarök, I will think. Holy cow that game was so freakin awesome... I'll take a pause, then say, "Wasn't it? It was right?" No doubt the person I'm saying it to will say, "Heck yea it was!" Because it is awesome. But at the same time I will always wonder if it actually really was as awesome as everyone says it is. I'm giving it a gosh darned 9 so I clearly think it is... but there's this Kratos shaped hole in my heart and I can't help but know, that I won't know, if I thought it was as awesome as everyone else. In fact, no, that isn't true. I know that, although I love the heck out of this game, I don't love it as much as everyone else. It could've and should've been better. Although at the same time I'm giving it a nine and freaking love the game too. Why am I in such a weird spot with it?This is what I'll say about it... It was a very good game and I really liked, ney! loved it a lot. But I will add no excited inflections nor will I be adding any exclamation points (besides after the one I added after the word 'ney') You can hate me all you want and I know many of you will. I am saying I love this game, I just personally had hoped for a bit of a different story. Again, I can't recommend this game more. Go out and buy it and sing your love from Olympus or your basement, or wherever. Just know that I don't love it as much as you do.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
