This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My biggest gripe with this game is how characters speak, behave and swear like the most normal, distinctly modern people, with their divinity and unique existence as gods being almost completely ignored. Immortal gods are made to deliver some of the strangest, most casual lines like walking into someone's home and saying "Nice place." or complaining about their "moms" and how typical they are. Words like yep, yeah, kinda, sorta, pretty are used just like in the modern day. Odin is just a mafia boss who yells at the dwarves "hey, it's me, your whole economy is speaking to you!", completely ruining the immersion into the game.

Casual writing can have its place to break the tension or as comedic relief, but in Ragnarok the villains, main characters and side characters all engage in this kind of dialogue, making everything feel constantly comedic.

The graphics are gorgeous, the combat remains the same as in the previous game, and it feels like a Marvel AAA casual movie, rather than a videoGAME. A game this focused on dialogue and story leaves ultimately little of value when the writing is given so much importance over the gameplay, and it fails this much to boot.

The one thing great about GOW 2018 was the combat. Somehow they messed that up. Emies who constantly spawn behind you or who spam attacks. So the enemy behind you spams an attack you have to block while the one in front forces you to dodge. And they like to juggle you. Bad game design all around. Story is ok.

I love everything about this game, well almost everything, there are moments in the story where the game slows down immensely even to a point where i was starting to get bored, luckily those moments aren't that often, but when you have to play those moments, you're gonna have a not so great time, at least in my opinion. But still this game is fantastic and i absolutely recommend anyone that has played GOD OF WAR (2018) to play this game you won't regret it. Expand

Mainly the pacing feels quite off, where some points in the game could have had way more time spent with them and less important points could have had way less time. People complain about the amount of cutscenes which is pretty funny, considering the game really has these cutscenes as rewards and it's not even that many, I think most of us were just killing stuff and leveling up our character just to see what happens next and it was really hard to do all of the side quest before doing the main story because I wanted to know what happened. I think the moral messages the story provides were phenomenal and it sucks people aren't really going to spend the time to understand them. The story was a bit messy and unfocused and the puzzle assistance was annoying, there was also a lot of unanswered questions we still have by the time the game was over with so much setup I felt like there could have been a bit more to it, but besides that the game is perfect in every other way, the characters are memorable and the voice acting is outstanding.

I also found the story to be more interesting as well. Being able to play as Atreus, albeit only sporatically throughout the story, is another request of mine fulfilled this time around. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely great continuation of the previous God of War. I know that some people are mad that it is not like the first games - but since 2018 it was something else.
The mechanic is not much different from the 2018 game so I won't focus on that although I just want to say that it doesn't need any bee mechanics ad the previous ones were good, and the continuation carries them well.
This time we can visit every world that lies between branches of Yggdrasil, even if only briefly, even if there aren't many points on the map that we can visit or have a reason to return later to - like Helheim or Jotunheim. Nevertheless, every world is different and unique in some way lush tropical Vanaheim with ruins of Vanir homes, rocky but colorful Svartalfheim with untrustful Dwarves, and a deep mine.
The utilization of nordic myths is astounding - we find Draupnir, Fenrir, wolves that chase the moon and sun - Hati and Sköll, and many, many more. Characters we meet are too remarkable - from well-known like Freya, The Huldr Brothers, or Mimir to ribald Thor and his daughter Thúrd, stern but soft Sif, or absolute a-hole Heimdall (most satisfying fight in the game!)
Even Angrboda and her meeting with Atreus. I know some might say that their meeting and the whole relationship is cheesy and cringe but hey, THE BOY is growing up and he does have his own story. It's not anymore the tale of the god who craves revenge. Both Kratos and Atreus are learning to trust each other, with an emphasis on the Father. Despite his wish to protect the last thing Kratos has left after Faye, he softens and grows to be a caring parent - but not overly caring, the end letting his son to chose his own path, while he learns to trust others.
It's a tale of grief, forgiveness, overcoming the past, learning trust, and creating bonds stronger than anything while facing fate and the end of the world.

-> Ugly Armour sets - I wanted more cool armour sets unlocked without doing side missions
-> Transitions/loading maps - there was too many 'squeeze through a tight space' areas, it sometimes ruined the pacing for gameplay

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointed but still enjoyable. Too much story and dialogue. The game tries to force emotional reactions with a ridiculous amount of cut scenes which takes up about 70% of the gameplay. The semi open world ruins the immersion and is just annoying. A lot of people are bloating their reviews and ratings because of the brand that is, God of War. They made Kratos very soft and the rest of the characters were very cringe. They tried way too hard to be charismatic and tried so hard to take what they did in 2018 and double it but it just resulted in cringe moments and over done “please cry” moments that were so annoying. The back seating by NPCs is more aggravating than an itch you can’t scratch. The Atreus arcs were like torture, you spend 50% of the game as him and nothing about him was interesting or cool. The game also has this childish Disney feel to it which stands against the legacy of the franchise. It’s supposed to be a serious game with serious consequences but it has these really cringey teenage soap opera moments that are such a drag and painful to have to sit through. Thor is also some drunk alcoholic with daddy issues and it makes him look so incredibly weak.

The world is empty, and you will find yourself begging for an enemy to show up so you can actually fight and do the most important thing in the game that clearly isn’t the main focus.

Overrated game and not a game of the year candidate in my opinion. The combat mechanics and boss fights were the only reason I gave this game a 7. I liked the combat in 2018 a lot and I like how they essentially took the foundation of 2018 and enhanced all of it and added a third weapon. The mechanics were great but I didn’t like how in GMGOW or No mercy difficulty the way they’d make the game more challenging was by making enemies out of the strongest steel in the universe and the ability for the weakest of the enemies to one shot you. 50% of the game is spent holding up or down to climb or wall shimmy, which is so over the top. In terms of villains I thought Heimdall was the best. He fits the theme and vibe of a true god of war game and I really loved fighting him.

Too many cut scenes, not enough actual gameplay. Climbing walls and holding up for hours is not gameplay.

Bravo!!!

It feels like the developers were torn how to go. They want the story and characters to be more personal than the prior trilogy and it worked in the reboot due to the story scale being small. In this one though the talk about end of the world but still they want the personal side of the story. It feels like they are being pulled in different directions and didn't know how to get them both to be awesome. Also F Atreus and F playing as him.

I dug my PS3 out of the attic to replay 2 and 3 after this game. Kratos was 2D and didn't say much, but nothing in Ragnarok was as cool as beating the **** out of Poseidon, after riding the back of a titan, then crushing his eyeballs, throwing him off the mountain causing massive flooding destruction. Why didn't they fight on the back of the snake riding around the whole world or something crazy. Nah lets fight in front of a lodge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I 100%'d this game about a week or so. Took time to soak it in. This is a great game but not without flaws - sadly, the most obvious flaw is that this game is inferior to the game that came before it.

How is it that Baldur was a far more compelling and threatening villain than Thor and Odin combined. Sure, Thor packed a punch and had layers. But, most of his - and Odin's - story was about Atreus' adventures rather than anything to do with Kratos.

The combat was great and the graphics/visuals were beautiful - but only slightly better than the previous game in both regards.

The overall gameplay maybe felt a little too familiar - I wouldn't call it DLC but see some people's point when they use "DLC" to criticize the game. Vanaheim was the only place that felt new. Even Svartleheim just felt like an extension of Midgard in the first game (lots of rowing, beaches to explore, mountain to climb via tunnel system, etc.).

    Now into spoiler territory...

The story was great at its peaks (Ragnarok was epic), but also had some repetitive and lazy bits. The standout "lazy bits" for me are in regard to Freya and Sif. Although it would have broke my heart, the only logical ending for Freya after God of War 2018 was for Kratos to kill her - another God wiped out by the Ghost of Sparta. For her to suddenly be like "if you kill Odin and break the curse that lets me travel out of Midgard, I'll forgive you for killing my son"... felt a little lazy. Now an objectively "lazy bit" of storytelling was Sif. Her sudden change of heart made absolutely no sense. Her disdain for Odin and Thor was primarily because Odin was allowing Atreus to stay in Asgard - rather than avenging or allowing Thor to avenge the deaths of Magni, Modi, and Baldur. She hated Atreus and Kratos for their deaths and there were never any signs/hints that she cared about the Midgard refugees. Then Ragnarok comes, Atreus and Kratos are at their doorstep and about to fight Thrud, and suddenly Sif shows up to convince her daughter to help the people of Midgard and help Atreus and Kratos because Odin is a cruel god?! Sounds to me like the writers of the game couldn't figure out a way to keep Thrud around as an ally post-game and shoe-horned this into the story.

All that said... I NEED New Game + mode. I've replayed the first game easily a dozen times. Although the above may seem mostly negative, this game is still amazing and I'll likely replay it just as much as the first after New Game + is released.

Esplorazione curata nei minimi dettagli, oggetti collezionabili ovunque, nemici diversi tra loro da affrontare ed ogni quest secondaria ha una storia a se, non sono tirate lì per allungare il brodo. To start off I played this on the ps4 which handles it honestly fine and that is shocking. The load times while not fun were workable. I am sure it is much more handsome on the ps5.

This game has a story that really grabbed me more than any book, movie or any other game. Being a direct sequel to the other games in the series it continues and grabs you so fast. You see Kratos doing and saying things you would never expect but they are in character and they do a good job following how he would act as he is growing as a person / god. His son has grown a lot to into a character I really like.

You get to play as both of these characters and even though you do not play as the son as much he is still a fun character to play as. He has good moves, attacks and solid storytelling. The new characters introduced are all fantastic and just fun to interact with and hear what they think. The extra dialogue is so fantastic to hear. I loved every moment of everything this game had to offer.

So my big wish was more killing animations. This game offers A LOT more than id ever dreamed of. Every weapon has unique kills, then there are special kills with your rage meter, and lastly, the boss kills are *FANTASTIC*.

I am pleased at everything there was offered in this game and honestly, I did not even want to beat it. I was sad at the thought of completing the game. I did though and now im working on getting all the trophies. The game opens up after you beat it and you can't miss any trophies which is great.

Also, if any developers sees this, PLEASEEEEE add the option to turn off the "hints" from Mimir and Atreus when it comes to puzzles. I don't like to rush gameplay. I like to look around and soak in the environment, but every time I reach a puzzle section, Atreus and Mimir immediately shout out the answer and tell me what to do and ruin he puzzle for me. Please give us the option to stop that!

Other major problems: (please improve these for the next game)
*** Traversal still sucks!!! Invisible walls everywhere. It doesn't make any sense which area Kratos can jump to and which area he cannot. It feels like a maze rather an an open or semi-open world.

*** Platforming still sucks! Games like Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, or Tomb Raider might not be perfect, but they still do a much better job when it comes to platforming and traversal. Reaching a specific area and pressing "x" just to watch Kratos climb is not that much fun, believe it or not.

*** Those two points above causes exploration/traversal to be so SLOW and frustrating. I don't care that the game looks gorgeous when I have to spend 5 minutes just to move a few feet on the map because Kratos can't jump over a small tree log.

*** Lastly, camera is still way zoomed in for this type of game. If possible, please give us a better (larger) FOV. This kind of over the shoulder camera works for something like Resident Evil because of its claustrophobic nature, but for a game like GoW it just causes a lot of cheap and frustrating deaths from attacks coming off-camera.

I respect all the effort that went into making this game, and it's clear that the developers put a lot of effort and care into it, but the improvements from the 2018 game are very minimal and it juts feels like playing an expansion of the same game.

    Thank you!

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
