I've tried finding good in this game and the only way I can is the concept; the emphasis was on exploration, but predominantly it seems survival is the main focus. So many things you must keep active and recharge just to survive. And because of this, it takes away from the fun factor of exploration.

The best way I could describe the feeling is that it feels like a 'play to play' game ... you are forced to play this game and mine materials and do exactly how the game wants you to or else you're out of luck and can't advance at all even if you just wish to roam the planet looking for stuff.

This game isn't for the majority of people. The fact that Sean Murray said it has 'hundreds of hours' of gameplay and I barely made it to 2, makes me question just what they were doing when they made this. If you enjoy this game, good for you, but the repetition for many will set in early, and if you're like me, you'll see the non-vibrant planets and the non-intelligent creatures that just feels tacked on and for all intents and purposes, falls flat.

OK when you first get into No Man's Sky it can be breath taking but after hours of gameplay It got repetitive. Planets and life on the planets are just slight variations of the planet you were on. On 5 different planets, 2 were from one system and 3 from another I encountered life that had the same spider legs or they looked almost identical except for color.

On 5 different planets, 2 were from one system and 3 from another I encountered life that had the same spider legs or they looked almost identical except for color.

They should have done 100 different legs, body, eyes, face, etc that way when the new planet with life you land on would have a greater chance on not looking the same. The same could be said about the planet generator as well.

The big set back is there is no REAL multiplayer and Sean Murray is very contradicting with multiplayer. He said you would be able to meet other players but there's a extremely small chance but then says its not a multiplayer game. The game info on the game case, on steam, and on PSN all say 1 player. To top it off 2 players got to the exact same spot on a world yet they could not see each other like Sean Murray said they could.

Verdict: 4/10 - Its a great game if you just want to relax and explore space in your spare time but there's lack of content and poor random generator. No multiplayer which could've added more hours of fun being able to explore with friends or a random person you come across.

It's the world's most elaborate screensaver. If you're interest in the game is unwavering, at least do your wallet a solid and wait until the game can be picked up for $20 used at your local Gamestop. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I appreciate that they have vastly improved the game over the last 3 years, it is only now approaching what was promised at launch. The game's base concepts are just not good enough to hold my attention or make me feel like I would rather be playing this than something else, which is a shame. The worst part of all of this is that they feel that they are still sensible in charging $59.99 for this, which is absolutely obscene.

My advice is that if you want some good fun with randomly generated stuff (including space) then go pick up Spore for a third of the price (or cheaper if you can find it on sale). Also, I have about 35-40 hours but I originally bought the game when it launched from the GOG store.

The universe is huge but what makes it good? Thats it, its just "Big". Travelling through out the entire universe is boring and just going from one planet to another is just a chore and just feels like it takes too long. There is no story and no real goal for this game, so overall you just feel useless and underpowered. You start off trying to fix your ship but it gets overly boring from there. There is no multiplayer (Which was a huge selling point for the game). There was no caves to explore, no customizable FOV and best of all. The graphics looked like it was straight barf! In the gameplay trailers we were shown huge beautiful worlds. But in No Mans Sky we are just given an optimization pile of trash. There was no interest in the game and it wasn't difficult or have any difficulty in it at all. Atleast the game is playable ill give it that. And it did feature the main theme. But what good is the main theme if you cant do anything interesting. Overall I give No Mans Sky a 4/10. Do not buy this game. Maybe if it was free, maybe...

    Cons:
    No multiplayer.
    No mountains.
    No deep caves.
    No deep sea exploration.
    No forests.
    No customizable FOV.
    No challenge.
    No interesting NPC.
    No story.
    No ending

    Pros:
Atleast they tried (or did they..)

I will be taking it back to GameStop so I can get some money back as it became overwhelmingly redundant after hour 10-15. The planets might have different fauna and textures but the actual terrain is exactly the same from planet to planet. There are only few different materials really to collect, as plutonium gives you everything to survive, move, and mine. Titanium, Iron and Zinc help with creating tech. And other than that you have a revolving door of "precious metals" to collect for no other reason than to make money, and are found and mined the same way. I'm frustrated as Sean Murray alluded that you can create things like minecraft, but in reality you have to find blue-prints and cannot use imagination to create things. Then again, there aren't enough different elements to make that challenge worth while. The caves are all built the same way. There are no rivers or anything that would break up a very patch-work environment. Everything in Space (planets, space stations, ships) is static except the pirates that seem to come after you much like spam ads hit you on the internet. The ships aren't even attackable or trade-able, they are their for background. For story, its very shallow text based experience. Understanding races languages does very little to change anything other than improving very boring dialog during trading stations that gives marginal benefits. I don't want to tell you too much about the end-game, but the game has a redundancy that extends beyond jumping system to system, but galaxy to galaxy that will make you want to pull your hair out. There is no sense that others are in the same galaxy. You are completely alone, as Sean Murray explained THE DAY BEFORE RELEASE. I personally do not believe we share the same universe, but share a multi-dimension universe where we are just uploading names of places. The game was an absolute joy for the first 10 hours..... but then, I started wondering what the damn point was. I did buy the game for a lot of reasons that Sean was talking about during the IGN first and videos prior. I did not realize that a lot of the ideas he was floating earlier would not make it into the final product as they just plainly ran out of time. Its a shame, because the game has an idea, and for a team of 14 people, pretty amazing..... but if it is not what was explained to people, it should not be a $60 AAA game. Some blame the gamer for the misunderstanding of the game. I don't, I blame the marketing of Sony and the numerous streams of Sean Murray for not being honest about the final build of the game. Anyway, I will return this game to Gamestop, pick up Uncharted 4 which I haven't played yet, and wait for the Nukaworld DLC for fallout 4 to drop..... Because this game was overwhelmingly disappointing. Expand

The gimmick of the procedurally generated planets wears thin soon, and shockingly the game does not have anything to base itself upon that beyond that.
It's as if a comedian told his best joke at the beginning of open mic night and then proceeded to regale the eager crowd with a story of his favorite shoe color.
The survival and FPS gameplay is arduous at best and frustrating at worst. The Sentinel robots begin to try one's nerves after the sixth millionth time you've encountered them in the same galaxy.

Inventory management is an absolute shambles as well. Micromanaging the small inventory space really starts to grind soon. I know there will be many free updates (and no paid DLC) to this game, but even if they gave me infinite space I still wouldn't like an inventory where resources and upgrades go together.

The only thing that can be said in the game's favor is that the procedurally generated planets are a technical marvel, and should be appreciated for the sheer audacity of the idea.

But I think they chose the wrong gimmick to hype up, and they should have spent more time on polishing the other elements. Fair play to Hello, but I think I have 18 quadrillion other games to play instead.

In fact, a lot of the stuff you're suggested to do in the game was really only added at a late stage, when the developers decided to try and market the game for a large audience.

In terms of gameplay, think Minecraft, but without actually building (just the mining and crafting part). The discovery and scanning parts (and the general aesthetic) feel to me rather like Metroid Prime. And the broad concept (i.e. exploring a massive and realistically scaled universe) is pure Elite. You will get out of this game precisely what you put into it... there's nothing helping you along. There are a couple of ways in which you could theoretically "finish" the game... to be honest, I'm not in the least bit interested in that. In fact, I will actively seek to avoid it. I'm quite happy pursuing my own quest to translate the local alien dialect of the area in which my game started out, and getting the necessary keys to unlock some of the locked areas.

It really helps if you understand (and I mean **really** understand) just what the developers have achieved too... this will help you overlook the fact that the graphics are quite basic, and draw distances (when flying close to planets at speed) are frequently compromised by a weird dithering effect.

Also, you have to be forgiving where the developers have compromised real physics in favour of playability. Docking/landing your ship is basically done for you; gravity is depicted as per Hollywood movies (i.e. not related to the mass of objects), some of the "things" from which you get "elements" are quite illogical and space itself is bizarrely blue & pink... never black. This is very much SciFi with the emphasis on "Fiction".

So... not realistic enough for anyone expecting Elite; way too open-ended for the majority of video game players. Who is this going to appeal to exactly? The answer is right here in the Metcritic reviews.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my second review and after playing it for sometime and watching videos of all the promises of what was supposed to be in the game I am doing a new one. I realised when watching said video why I was so hyped for the game as all the things Shawn said would be included, the list is far too big to mention here but watch one of the many 'NO MANS LIES' videos on Youtube or Angry Joes review. Not to mention that but also the ending which was a total pisstake. Luckily Amazon have been good enough to refund me my money and let me send the game back (got to love Amazon!) so I have no ordered Deus Ex! I heard that Hello Games were being sued for the use of the generation system the game uses, maybe this was why so many features were left out? Maybe Sony pushed to release it quickly? Maybe they run out of money to add all the features? I dont know but what I do know is by watching Angry Joes review it reminded me of all that was promised and that is not the game I received. If anyone saw any of the gameplay demos with lush planets and amazing creatures flying in the air or huge Dinosaurs and so on, none of this is anything like what I saw when I visited these barren, dry and bleak planets. All the animals looked fairly alike and it was just boring. Unfortunately this game is not worth £60 and even at a price of £20 you are going to get bored very quickly only to find out that if you do make it to the center of the galaxy you will find there is no pay off, like none at all, like there isnt anything there so all the grinding is for nothing. I am so happy I found that out before going there myself as I had make sure I stayed clear from spoilers but Angry Joes reviews made me need to find out what was at the center. I stuck up for this game as they were a small indie outfit who was getting lots of bad press and reviews but they deserve it because they lied to us about everything. The game is a shell of what was promised and if I hadnt been able to get my refund I would be very upset. That being said the first time you fly out from the planet you start from it is something special, after that however the monotony sets in. Such a shame as this could of gone down as one of the best games ever! Expand

I didn't misunderstand the game. I knew that it was survival based. I knew that it was a slow paced game where exploration, gathering, and trading would be key. I get all that. The reason why No Man Sky is a dud for me is because Hello Games promised a gigantic universe to explore but only has about 1000 or so core assets - meaning this "huge" universe start to look the same within the first few hours.

My excitement dropped immensely when I landed on just my second planet and found the SAME flora asset that just had the name changed. The the SAME rock/Iron asset, again with just the name changed. Then the SAME minerals and crystals. The creatures looked almost identical, with variation so small I couldn't actually notice the difference (though to be fair, I saw more variation in creatures eventually.)

The first 10 planets I explored I saw repeats of the same assets over and over again, so I'm using my scanner to make this "new" discovery, and its just the same exact plant I've already seen 20 times, just with a different name.

THAT, friends, sucks. That is cause for legitimate disappointment. It doesn't matter how enormous the game world is if only 10% or so of it feels truly unique. After a while I starts to feel like basically "ah this is the green planet, that's the red planet, here's the blue planet -- where everything on it looks more or less the same.

Guess what's worse? The structures for every alien race, every outpost, every shelter that I visited in my 30 hours of gameplay use the SAME damn models. Talk about immediately killing any sense of vastness or difference or exploration.

The Sentinels on planets is also a let down. Every planet I've visited has them. Sometimes they are more aggressive, sometimes they aren't - but I never got to a planet where I truly felt like I was the FIRST to explore. Someone's always been there before me. It is also annoying has hell to have sentinels constantly interfering with your efforts to do the most basic things like harvest a mineral. And talk about repetitive. Sentinels follow the exact same script, in the exact same way, on every single planet I've been to so far.

I don't feel like I was confused about what kind of game this is. I feel like the execution on what the game aspired to be is unfortunately quite poor.

It has to be a less prominent role in a game. This game is behind the interesting idea (on paper) so shallow and thin that it is almost unbelievable this game had a green light for a release. It's not a finished product. Maybe this game was better suited for something like a demo, a promotion thing of a game producer. When I went to work the first day after playing No Man's Sky I gave it a resounding 8/10. I'll admit I was one of those who bought into the hype but I severely scaled back my expectations right before the game came out after the reports from Dameon who bought the game early for 1300 bucks. Despite a hefty day one update he was still mostly dead on accurate. But after experiencing semi frequent crashes (Btw of the 3 friends I have who play this all of their games have crashed numerous times. One of them can't even get in the game the last two times so he stopped trying until a patch is finished.), lazy building/resourse modeling, unengaging gameplay that requires you to be sitting pointed at rocks and other resources (which all look exactly the same) for hours on end, and endless weak instances of getting attacked by the same two enemy types (Pirates and sentinals) for the entire game. I have now landed at a 4. For a game that seemed to have endless imagination, Hello Games managed to put almost no imagination into a story or purpose behind all of this monotonous crap. I've logged probably about 40 hours into this game btw. I held on hoping that as the story unfolded and my gear was upgraded I'd be treated to a more pleasurable gaming experience, but the enjoyment never game. I found myself sick of landing on the same types of planets over and over again, disappointed with the thrown together piles of body parts they called creatures, and annoyed with the constant need to find resources to continue on my journey. I set my sights on one thing in the end, reaching the center of the galaxy. Boom I started blasting off flying from planet cluster to planet cluster hoping for an epic finish to what has been a lackluster journey. After 40 hours of total gameplay I seem to be no where near a finish to this game which sucks cause its hard to want to finish. Why 15 Quintilian?? If your going to just lie or being incredibly vague about the multiplayer aspect of the game, at least give people the satisfaction of saying, "Oh hey someone named this planet already. Wow that's hilarious. Great Job Hello Games!!" But pretty much no ones said that. Cause when this shotty games connection to the network is actually active you don't see dick from other people. Not a planet, definitely not a creature, and not even a system. This game is so big to the point where it removes the "moments" Sean Murray blabbed about for months leading up to the game. After 40 hours I'd expect to see at least a planet named by someone....but every planet I've found so far I've discovered. Seems to kinda defeat the purpose don't you think? But I could forgive all the multiplayer bs, the lazy modeling, and the complete lack of a compelling story if the game was just fun, but to say it is would be an outright lie. Sloppy controls to the combat make it hard to enjoy which leaves mining resources and looking at procedurally generated planets as the only real enjoyment factor to this game. The only reason its not lower than a 4 is occasionally I would land on a planet and look out over a field of blue grass and be like "Yup this is the only thing that makes this journey worth it". But without more even that seems to fall flat on its face. So I leave you with this question folks. If you were to buy a brand new Tesla automobile with the latest technology in electric vehicles and it ran like absolute crap, would you consider it a good car just because the technology was so advanced? No. You wouldn't. Because people don't buy cars just to look at them. They buy for the ride. No Man's Sky has deprived me of the thrill of the ride while charging me for a cutting edge sports car. I don't think we should praise using new technology badly just because there was new technology at play. Expand

No Man's Sky is a game that will go down in history; not because it's good, but because there has never been a game that has been this disappointing. No, really; I can't think of a single game that was missing so many advertised features on launch.

But, let me start off with the positives. When you start up to game and explore your first planet, it's a magical experience. You find all of these minerals and see these goofy animals and plants, and you just have a generally good time. The ambient music is very well made, along with most of the in-game sounds. The system for learning to understand alien languages is really cool too. But as soon as you begin to really get into the game, you'll realize that there is something fundamentally wrong with it.

Every planet you go to hardly differs from the other ones you visit. Almost every single planet has nearly the exact same resources. The buildings you find are carbon copies of each other, and you'll start recognizing patterns in the animals ridiculously fast. Then, there's the space stations. You'd think they'd be bustling hubs of business with plenty of space-faring life to interact with. There is literally ONE actual alien in them. You can talk to the various space pilots in their ships, but you can't actually see them outside interacting with each other. The big freighter ships that are in the game don't move, and you can't pilot them. The various ship types that Murray emphasized are nearly null and void; you just look for the one with the biggest inventory, no matter what. Another thing Murray talked about was landing on asteroids, which you can NOT do!

And then there's the factions. They're basically worthless and your ties to them don't do anything to benefit you. You don't get ships to guard you from pirates while navigating the galaxy, or unique parts to attach to your ship; they're just, there. And this wouldn't be such a problem if there was actual multiplayer! And the "Sean Murray said you would probably never find another player!" excuse doesn't defend them NOT INCLUDING IT.

The life on planets does not get crazier and more mutated as Murray said. There's no brontosaurus creatures or dune worms; and the large animals in the game don't have their animation speed scaled correctly. Almost every animal in the game looks off.

And yes, I understand the Hello Games is a small team. But the fact of the matter is that they were backed by Sony. **** SONY! They knew that people would expected most of these features in the game, but yet they refused to Let Sony increase their team! And on top of that, Sean Murray back over his statement about the game not having paid DLC! Everything surrounding this game is shady, and I feel like we've been cheated out of what could have been the best game of all time.

Graphics are mediocre (played on PS4). Lots of bugs and popping up. Planets are only different because of colors and nothing else. This game is a perfect example of why you should not get on board the Hype train. I recommend to skip it, but if you can not resist it, just rent it for a few days.

    1. Crashes. I currently have the most recent patch (1.05) and I'm still getting crashes. Before 1.05 it was enough to frustrate me, now it's once in a blue moon and "tolerable".

    2. Bugs. I have discovered all species on 4 planets yet have only been credited with the 'journey achievement' on 2. The last planet which I am still on, I spent the past 3 days looking for one more creature, to find it and get a 15/15 found but only a 93% completed rate. After this, I have zero incentive to continue scanning and searching for creatures as I gain nothing from it, except wasted time.

    3. Graphics. IMO the graphics are actually fine, except in the most recent update I find the pop-ins much worse.

    4. Pirates and space combat. I probably should list this at number 1 as I find it the most annoying, I can hardly travel in space without being attacked. Since I can't fly away from them and space combat is horrible, I just let myself get killed and fly back to retrieve my items. Oh and did I mention the space combat is horrible? I have managed to destroy one ship, but it was on its own. Usually you're taking on 3 ships at once.

    5. Things really aren't that different. I have been to countless planets and systems, but after you've seen a dozen planets with different creatures etc. it all ends up looking the same. I have found 'space whales' on 3 planets so far that are all absolutely identical. I can't say I feel the excitement of finding something new when I land on a new planet now.

    6. Maxing things out happens fairly quickly. After about 50 hours my exosuit is maxed out with 48 slots. After you purchase one ship with say 20-25 slots (around 2-4 million units), all you have to do is find crashed ships and gain an extra slot until your happy. I'm at a 30 slot ship despite only buying 1 ship so far worth 1.8million units that had 24 slots. In other words I have 4.8 million units now but see little reason to spend on anything now.
Also gaining all the basic blueprints can be accomplished in just a matter of hours. Afterwards you just keep finding or receiving ones you already know.

    7. Cost. I judge all games I buy on cost vs enjoyment I get. It's $80CDN which is what AAA games cost here. I rarely purchase games at this price as I'll wait for price drops or sales, but I figured it would be worth the gamble as I was looking for a more relaxing game to play. The last game I spent $80 on was Uncharted 4, which is a well polished and amazing game that I can say gave me $80 worth of enjoyment.
Spending $80 on a game that crashes constantly, has bugs that doesn't recognize your progress simply isn't worth it. I actually do like NMS, but I would say it's a $40CDN game at most.

    8. Inventory. I nearly hit submit before remembering the inventory. The worst thing is if your ship or exosuit are full, then you can't see materials required to craft or add technology, meaning you must either sell or just destroy items to free up a slot.

    The Good:
    1. Well, my favourite thing to do in games like GTAV or Just Cause3 is wander around and do my own thing. That's pretty much what NMS is. Wander around and do you own thing. I find that relaxing and a nice change of pace from other games I play.

Despite having more negatives I do actually enjoy NMS and it could still be a good, solid game in the future. However in its current state at its current price, I simply could not recommend this game to anyone.

Some planets where exploration made you say " wow " everytime . This is what they did see.
They spoke about exploration. They only talked about exploration.
    But, seriously?
There is no life. There are always the same (stupid) things in every planet you visit, and even the randomness of the procedural system can make it look different.
They could make an effort to create the “bricks” more numerous and varied.
There are 10 kinds of trees , 10 types of stones , 10 types of bushes, 5 tyes of flowers, 20 kinds of elements. How can a procedural system create live planets , each one different from the other?
Where are the mountains , the plains , seas or rivers ? Where is the randomness of a living planet?
Only the color and the position of the things are different. But, serously?
How can a ridiculous animal species produce exactly the same ridiculous sound light years away?
How can one more identical baby-face dog make me feel to be alive on an alien planet?
How can give me the pleasure of exploration?
Another fan-kind stone that give you carbon. Seriously? Is the same stone that I cataloged in the system that I just left ! why should I give it another name ?

Well, I downloaded No Man’s Sky off of the PlayStation store, because it was sold out in all of the gaming stores in Ames, Iowa. The downloading portion only took about thirty minutes, which was probably one of the only things I was pleased with. So sad to say it folks, but this game was a big disappointment in my eyes. When I first started playing the game, there was a few things that caught my eye. Graphics, flying the ship, and exploring was really exciting. After a few hours of not knowing what was going on, and no real mission driven plot, plus the terrible soundtrack, I was fed up! I didn’t mention the very tedious mining and collecting of resources to do anything, and when I say very tedious I mean that with my entire heart. Plus not to mention exploring and time it takes to get places in the game play was ridiculous! Even when you did collect enough resources to get an upgrade, it was a sad disappointment. Even upgrading your own ship, which is a big accomplishment in the game, offered nothing special except more slots for mindless resources. Even the fighting gameplay with your ship is very difficult and almost impossible to hit a target flying through space with you. This game was defiantly not for a person like myself. I would say this is more driven to people that do not mind taking a long time collecting resources, and really figuring out the game for themselves. This game is not going to hold your hand, and push you in to the right direction. You are going to have to spend a lot of time finding your way, which is why I did not enjoy this game past a few hours. -Learning alien languages word by word is an interesting, yet fun concept. and can offer up better trades for you.
-The overall look of the 'solar systems' and galaxies is, once again, breathtaking to say the least.
And now, we journey to the other side of things:
-Yes, there are some amazing planets, but they are few and far between all the barren ones you will come across, not to mention toxic, hot or freezing ones that take away you life support power.
-The creatures you encounter are nothing like those in the trailer. They are procedurally generated to provide new combinations, but they often looked mashed together. Kind of like when you play with lego when you're younger and put different pieces together to make something entirely new, only for it to be like something you made earlier.
-Space combat is, once again, nothing like the trailer. It is oftentimes tedious and difficult early on in the game.
-No factions like in the trailer. Maybe there is factions in the game, but none that are apparent to the player, and certainly none you can join.
-All the ships are the same just with more slots for your inventory. There are no advantages to specific ones otherwise.
-No multiplayer at all. Personally, not a fan of multiplayer games but coming across other players would have been nice and the fact it was advertised and then turned out not to have it was rather...disappointing.
Overall, I did not enjoy this game and find too many issues to consider giving it higher than a 4.
Do I think it's a bad game? No.
Do I think it's overpriced and lacking in multiple areas? Yes.
Had this game been a £20, early access title on steam, I would probably love it, but a £50 game on the PS4 is far too much for something horrendously lacking in features that may come in future updates.
Buy this game when it's on sale, but don't fork out anything above £30, as I truly do not believe it to be worth it.

I spent ages trying to discover every plant and animal on my planet, and was excited to finally leave in search of exciting planets. However, that feeling of excitement quickly wore off for me. After a while you realise the games limitations in what is supposed to be an infinite universe. Planets would start to look the same, space stations lacked any variety, and interaction with npc's became very limited. On a side note, how am I the first person to discover a planet if there are already alien life forms scattered around said planet? Putting aside the lack of gameplay features that people were told would be in the game, No Man's Sky feels extremely bare bones. What is the point of having 18 quintillion planets in a game? Why create a game where 99% of it will never be discovered? The only reason I carried on playing this game was the hope of finding something new an exciting in the universe. Needless to say, I didn't. Maybe this game will improve with regular updates and added gameplay features. But considering how quiet Hello Games and Sean Murray have been since launch, I wouldn't be surprised if this game remains the way it is. Obviously, I don't want that to happen because this game had so much potential, if just failed to deliver and turned into a rather dull experience. Expand

What a waste of time. No content. No momentum. No progression. No ending. It has about 20 hours worth of compelling gameplay before you start to feel suckered. People will say it's a "chill game" or that "it's all about the journey", but there is no journey. Every planet is nearly identical. Every system is nearly identical. Every upgrade is nearly identical.

Story wise everything kind of makes sense in this universe when the revelation bombs hit. Though the story and/or the copy/paste side missions is not what drives my interest in this game.

The Developers give you a lot of cool fun unlock-able stuff to mess about with on land, in underwater and in space. The main personal carrot on the stick is all the researching and chasing after new tech or rare/exotic gear/equipment. All to the backdrop of looking at colorful vibrant worlds while listening to the great in game soundtrack. The game does offer other things like mining, base building, trading, bounty hunting, fleet management, farming, pets and cataloguing.

The game is far from complex or deep. Pretty easy to pick up and put down on normal difficulty and not much of challenge. It does have survival mode which is not even that hard ( perma-death as of yet to be tried ). This a pretty chill laid back gaming experience for sure. Took my mind of the Pandemic BS for sure.

2021 Updates have tanked the frame rates. PC and Console gamer hey developers no excuse not to put graphical and effects slider bars/toggles in the console versions. Which consoles games tend to run worse anyway, because they don't have beefier or upgradable tech. WTF is this 20-25 FPS crap?

Game comes with in built VR. The pixelation is alll pretty bad and the planets in space didn't look very VR. The VR cockpit was pretty cool, but not as amazing as Infinite War cockpit. After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

I get the intent of giving a sens of grandeur to the entire world, but once you choose a destination and just travel for minutes, there kind of isn't any point to making it that long.

The designers could have crafted 5-15 beautiful and interesting planets with varied biomes. But instead we've got an infinite number of randomly generated planets, most of which inevitably wind up boring and empty.

So prepare to spend hours and hours and hours searching for a pleasant planet for your home base, only to find that once you've found one and started started building, you're in a constant struggle with your inventory size, the game's confusing mechanics, and refueling everything you own or use. Can't find a particular material on your planet? You'll have to fly off of yours, but oh wait no launch fuel. Oh wait no hyperdrive fuel. Oh wait can't find a planet with the material. Oh wait your mining beam is out of fuel. Oh wait you're out of storage space. It all feels much more tedious than in other survival games.

And once you've built your base, a couple cool vehicles, you realize - there's nothing of interest to actually be explored and there isn't much story to speak of. There are barely any threats to your health and safety, and the variations among different kinds of flora and fauna basically amount to: wow, a vaguely cow-shaped thing with longer legs than the last cow thing.

That's my 10-hr story with No Man's Sky. I tried. I really did. And I wanted to like it. Some people do find this infinite randomly generated space exploration thing interesting. But for everyone else, go play Subnautica, The Forest, Conan, Ark or The Outer Worlds, Mass Effect, Astroneer - really any other survival or space game instead.

A common rebuttal to negative commentary seems to be "Well, this is an exploration game, you obviously don't get it and Hello Games told you how it was going to be." That's not a valid rebuttal in the slightest. Exploration is about finding new things, and while each planet is technically unique many of them feel extremely similar. Each planet is of a single biome. While Hello Games told us this would be the case, it doesn't excuse the fact that it makes planetary exploration fairly dull. While there are certain outposts placed on many planets for you to find (once you've seen one outpost, you've seen all of them). A level of diversity on the planets, mountains, rivers, deserts, etc. accompanied with varied wildlife for each of these biomes would give more reason to explore a larger amount of the planet. Currently, once you land on a planet you pretty much know how the rest of the planet looks like. Since everything you find is pretty similar, it's hard to even call this game an exploration game, and if it is it's most certainly a poor one.

The combat mechanics of this game, both on land and in space, are absolutely abysmal. Framerates drop during combat, making aiming even more difficult than it already is. Space combat is boring, simply turning in circles and shooting at each other with each pass. The survival portion of this game serves mostly as a nuisance. With all of the resources that you need being incredibly common, there is no struggle to survive, which is not interesting at all. Since there is no struggle to survive, it's pretty difficult to call this a survival game, and if it is it is a poor one.

Since No Man's Sky both of its genres poorly (exploration and survival) if at all, I question whether this is really a game at all right now. At the moment, this seems like a very elaborate procedural technology demonstration with very undeveloped gameplay elements. There is limitless area for you to fly around in, but there's really not a lot to find. Unfortunately the way people will view this game is a function of the hype surrounding it and it's AAA price. Without the hype and the $60 price tag, I think you'd see a lot of 6's or 7's for review scores, but when you build it up and you charge this much and fail, the fall hurts a lot worse. To me, I view this as being a bad product regardless of the price and hype. 3/10

I wanted to love this game, small English studio, massive size. But the delivery is awful.

The sheer size of this game could be scaled back slightly in favour of some actual content. I can break down the game play into mine/fly/buy a ship if you are lucky.

The lack of any map/records. An example of the issue I have is the "crashed ship" discovery. Which is brilliant, you find a new ship better than your current one, then as you realise you need a part from the space station you realise you cannot tag the location to get back there (if you can I cannot find a way to do it) to repair the new ship. Also the galactic map is incredibly difficult to navigate on PS4.

No actual missions at all other than "Path of Atlas" and "get to the middle". Nothing, no one wants you to collect some shiny objects and come back (because you will not know where you you should come back to).

Scanning flying creatures. I have spent probably half the time I have played this game hunting for the "last creature" on the planet and then trying to scan it, but it flies so you can't. Flying creatures seem un-scannable, hours spent holding the scanner to the air only to have the little buggers just laugh and fly slowly away.

The next is the upgrading of inventory. Exo suit upgrades increase every time so you need more and more money. Ships go up from under 1 million for 22 slots, to multi million for a couple more slots. Multi tools again require more mining and money which is fine but leaves very little motivation to keep playing.

The game is devoid of anything to do, it is just a big expanse, a huge expanse of nothing but the same orbs with ever so slightly different plants/animals/resources but nothing different. No motivation to do anything.

The hype surrounding this bears no resemblance to the game that came out. I don't even care if Hello games lied about the multi player (that would have ended up as a PvP fight every time without fail), the issue for me is the lack of any content within a huge expanse of supposed content.

Base building and freighters... What is the point of having a base when you cannot find the system is on, let alone the planet.

    Some other things:

the height of the player - the promo image looks like a child and I guess it is a child because your head height is the same as the bar/console/gek knee. Even the gek who seem like a tiny race are massive compared.

Three races - 18 Quintillion planets and three races...

Walking speed - for a walking simulator the speed you walk is awful.

Button layout PS4 - run, scan and melee should be swapped with each other.

I will add to this as I remember.

Again, I want to love it, really want to love it. I just cannot bring myself to.

But unfortunately it comes down to the simple fact that the game gets very boring, one dimensional and repetitive. Borderline frustrating at times. No quests, no set out character, no interesting aliens, nothing that keeps the game interesting. When you enter a new planet, the initial thrill of seeing what it looks and its composition dies off soon when you realize that every planet really is a dead planet. There isn't anything particularly specific to do except discover some animals, which gets old very fast. Yes, they have different things to mine but unless you want to stand there and fire a laser beam at rocks for 2 hours, it really isn't interesting. The complete lack of direction doesn't help, what am I doing? Why am I doing it? Give me some motivation to keep playing it. It may be harsh but this is really a glorified indie arcade game that shouldn't cost anymore than £20.

Here is the shocker: Whatever you will do in the first half hour in the game, is what you will do for the rest of the game. You mine minerals. There is hardly any fighting and the space flight itself is so hand holding, that you just won't feel like you travel anywhere, beside a different colored space with different colored planet. In the game, it becomes obvious, that at least 70% of the content is missing, there is hardly any meaningful interactions with any alien races, beside trying to win their approval by solving puzzles or giving them minerals. as someone who spent 60 USDs on this, i learned the hard way to never go digital unless we're talking serious sales, the game at the current state of it (and honestly, i'd say at foreseeable future) is worth $25 at maximum.

when you've expected a vibrant world you're hit with the staticness of it, the crushing loneliness makes for some terrible game, some may call it a "relaxing" experience, but i don't, there is nothing of character in the entirety of the game, everything and everyone you meet is as boring as the rocks you'll mine for iron, i tried to make my own fun by learning the languages of the races (one of very rare pros) but that got old quickly once i learned that it takes more than 400 words for each race (3+ atlas), something even the game recognizes by giving you the top rank in this category at about 250 words, interloper.

to add to an already broken game, if you've seen a water planet, a rock planet, garden world and an ice planet, you've seen it all now.

for now, the only thing you should do to this game is a) stay away from it if you know about it (75% of those who may read this) or b) wait for a good sale (50% at least) before getting a copy, and NOT DIGITAL, you'll grow tired of it before you know.

I tried to defend this game at first but its just so unfinished that I can't, this is still a fair review and here are a list of pros ans cons

    cons:
-The space stations are terrible. If they were going to randomly generate stuff they could have done it to the space stations as well, they are all the same, they are so empty despite being the size of the death star, with only two rooms to "explore" and one alien working there.

-There are only three different alien races, infinite number of retarded looking animals yet they only made three different types of alien, I don't even know why they bothered, there is no difference between the aliens except their heads. There's no backstory or conflict between the races.

-There's no cities or villages, they could have made some sort of undeveloped/savage aliens that lives in mudhuts or tee-pees or something, or some sort of villages with bars and shops or even big alien cities, instead you get the same looking buildings through out the universe with only ONE goddamn alien every time, and when ships lands at a trading post or something no one gets out, they just wait 10 seconds and fly off, giving the game a look of lifelessness.

-The random animals are terrible, they do nothing except walk around, they don't hunt or drink or eat or sleep. Seeing an animal is a big thing actually cause they're so rare, and seeing a big one is even more rare. I have yet to see two or more different types of animal in the same place.

-The inventory system is terrible, the fact that upgrades take up space is ridiculous, not to mention the fact that you run out of space in about 10 minutes.
You find all these blueprint for upgrades you're never going to use because they take up space and are useless.

-The planets are very samey, very barren, very empty, there are no jungles or tall mountains or crevasses or volcanoes or geysers, just the same rocky landscape every time, with a different danger like radiation or heat or cold or toxins but it makes no difference, your shield absorbs it all and you just have to mine more to keep it going.
And it's not like finding materials is hard, fuel is everywhere, is not a commodity you have to refine or buy or use sparingly, it's EVERYWHERE and very easy to get.

    - Space battles are extremely easy and dull, even if you do die there are no real consequences, just fly back to your grave and pick up all your stuff, you even have a way-point showing you where you died.
The big spaceships you see are pointless, you cant land inside them or explore them or hijack them, you can just attack them and probably get killed by sentinels.

-The game is marketed as survival. This is false there is no aspect of survival, no hunger or thirst or need for shelter. You can wander around for hours just refueling your suit and you won't die.

-The worst thing in this game is that it's so easy, but this is a sort of paradox: surviving, collecting resources, getting money is all very easy, but the end goal is pointless, there is no real motivation to get to the center, so it makes it difficult to want to play it.

    Pros:
I struggled to find these cause I want to give this game a fair review.

+The planets look pretty from in space (especially if you're on a moon).

+If you like to look at randomly generated stuff, you'll like it.

    +Black holes look cool.

But that's it. I'll admit this game was a victim of hype but the way it was marketed was extremely deceptive, they showed scripted things that you would never find in the game. Without even mentioning the lack of multiplayer this game is still terrible, and multiplayer/ co-op drop in aspect could have saved the game.
But this game is by no means worth the 60$ price tag.

The idea of a vast universe waiting to be explored with billions upon billions of planets to be explored is a captivating marketing tool, and certainly a wonderful feat achieved by No Man's Sky. It would always have been a challenge to fill those planets with unique quests. Instead all planets have outposts, monoliths, transmission towers, and drop pods which have rewards such as increasing your knowledge of an alien language, giving you better equipment, or finding a crashed ship that may have one more inventory than your own! (Excited yet?) Yes the designers try to vary the dialogue in each one of these encounters, but it is lacking since you are basically doing the same thing on every planet. As for rewards, mid way through play through you already have most of them so you end up getting rewards that you already have, hence rending the whole endeavour pointless. You can shoot things to get minerals which you can trade or use to upgrade equipment, but after 4 hrs it all starts to feel rather pointless. I mean do you need a 48 slot ship with fully upgraded mining tools and cannons to reach the Center of the universe?Unsurprisingly , the answer is no. So why spend hours upon hours hunting for rare minerals, trading with generic aliens at space ports, and continuously gather materials to fuel your space ship?

The other aspect of this game that seems to be a paradox is the exploration and discovery concept. Why discover things when the chance of anyone finding your discovery (or even caring) is close to nil? As for finding all animals on a planet and categorising them shouldn't even be considered as gameplay, not in a 60 dollar game that is anyway.

In a nutshell this game tries to utilise the romantic concept of space exploring and banked on that being enough for people to remain captivates. However when it comes down to it, space exploration is boring and tedious. The game doesn't excel in any particular field. First person shooting? Cumbersome. Intergalactic trade? limited and un-dynamic. Starship battles? incomplete. Story? partially there but lacks any serious drive except for the obsessive compulsive dead bent on reaching the center. Mining? A means to an end, that has no end.

If the designers state this game is for a niche market than it should be priced accordingly. So much could have been added, yet their defence is a small team. Here is a bright idea then, no need for quintillion planets!

    A suggestion for how it could have been better;

    1. More customisable space ships ( including ability to change color and design)
    2. Improved FPS capabilities and improved combat
    3. Reduction in planets
    4. Addition of varied quests
    5. Faster dialogue during conservations with aliens!!!!!
    6. Improve space ship combat dynamics
    7. Ability to have PVP multiplayer in starships
    8. purchasing starship cargo vessels for trade and transport
    9. Stat counters to compare with other players across the globe ( how many animals planets discovered, minerals gathered, etc)

Those are just 9 thought of on the spot, I'm sure there are many other points that could be done.

At first you think the planets are beautiful, you want to keep exploring, making new discoveries and meeting new aliens, you quickly realise however that nothing is new. You will come across the same space stations in every system, visit the same planets to gather enough resources to warp to another system where you go to the same space station and visit the same planets to gather more resources to warp to another similar system over and over and over again.

I've warped over 30 times, met 40 odd aliens and been through black holes but I've got no reason to keep going, I know that the next 30 times I warp will produce the same result, I'll end up gathering the same 3 or 4 resources on a planet just to warp the next, there is nothing left for me to see or do here in under 20 hours of play time.

Hell, i could just end the review there but since there are far more issues and frankly you will probably see this game on my list of "top 10 worst games of 2016" list i'm just going to cut the **** and start my review.

    Problems:
1.Inventory UI looks like crap (not the worst i've seen, but i have seen much better)

2.Weapons energy gets depleted way too fast (hope you have a good cave to hide in because the start weapon is downright pathetic)

3.The game performs like **** (if you are going to delay the game for months, than it better **** work good at launch, i've heard everything from framerate dips while idling to the game just flat out not starting at all without crashing)

4.the progression is sooo slow (the amount of grinding for resources in this game is downright **** atrocius and here it just seems like the developers made it this way just to squeeze more time out of your hands)

5.the overall gameplay (at the very least in singleplayer) is extremely repetitive and boring

I swear, this is starting to remind me of another overhyped space FPA game (Destiny)

6.There are features that are just flat out missing (ability to name your own planets, multiplayer and co-op exploration)

7.The price,oh yea did i forget to say that this all 60 **** dollars and the fact that this game took 2 years to develop

In total the game just seems very desolate and unfinished,it feels like some **** i would see on Steam Early Access for free
and while some of the performance issues will probably be fixed in the future (hopefully) and Hello Games has stated that Multiplayer will be added later on it still doesn't excuse this game for being not only a huge let down but also a complete snoozefest.

My advice would be to wait until the game gets cheap, verrry cheap before buying it.

Being a programmer and coder myself, I understand game development is a complex process, and some features have to be removed. Furthermore, the videos with all the exposed lies are still on the steam page as if that was the actual game you would play if you purchase. But what really makes me mad and made me give it a 3/10 is there has been no honest response to all the criticism the game has had, and no honest feedback on what it will truly be, and what it will not be. (For example, Sean Murray has not given a single direct statement about players not being able to meet). Sad to see an indie studio I had so much faith in, fall into the toxic marketing and unhonest behavior that is now so commonplace in the gaming industry, with very few exceptions.

Before launch, Sean Murray was constatly tweeting about his game, feeding the hype. After launch, it has been 3 weeks with no news from him, and no public communications regarding the missing features. That is very unprofessional

This is my second review on this title. After played some more hours and watched some prerelease trailers (didn't see them before), my opinion changed dramatically.

First of all, NMS is a good, simple, no-brainer indie game which worth a few bucks or so. But it isn't near that AAA quality that its current price suggests. Lemme sum up the issues (after 20 or so hrs of play): -

Lemme sum up the issues (after 20 or so hrs of play):

    - Space "battles" are a joke, best to be ignored.
    - Creature diversity is non-existent. There are about 30 types of species and they vary in extremely minor things.
    - Creature AI is a joke.
    - Flying in the atmosphere is limited.
    - Vortex Cube planets breaks the game's economy.
    - Cannot transfer upgrades to new ships or multi-tools, which leads to a repetitive grinding for exactly the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
    - You're gonna visit the same 5 buildings over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
    - Beside mining and resource gathering, there is nothing "interesting" to do in this game. Creature discovery gets boring once you realize the issue #2.

Don't buy this until the price drops to $2 or until it gets patched up to the level of quality of the trailers.

There is less content and options available to the player in No Man's Sky than Minecraft back in 2011, let alone the latest version of Minecraft.

I wonder how much effort and money was invested into this game versus the amount of money that will be made by Hello Games. The people calling this a philosophical experience are hilarious. They're akin to a hipster going to a modern-art

The people calling this a philosophical experience are hilarious. They're akin to a hipster going to a modern-art museum and intently looking at a jar of urine, trying to figure out the meaning behind such a piece of art while simultaneously fearing the notion of accidentally letting their fellow hipsters know that they don't see anything but a jar of urine.

    The emperor has no clothes.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
