In the sense that not every planet has fauna and flora, which makes finally finding species much more exciting. I’ve been more inclined to go exploring other planets due to this change, and have found they have unique climates and weather systems. On that note however, planets don’t have natural phenomenon as you’d expect on planets. You won’t find Volcanos, waterfalls, or geysers or even rainbows. Solar systems still don’t have Gas Giants, or anything close to realistic scaling. Most caves look the same on every planet and usually contain the same resources.

Nanites are a new currency players can find throughout the universe in various places, like searching damaged machinery, blasting sentinels and more. At Space Stations, players can trade Nanites with one of three races for blueprints. This seemed to have reduced the previous random chances of finding new technologies by themselves, and relying on trading Nanites with species for technology at Space Stations. The name Nanite implies a microscopic device. Yet for some reason, they take inventory space. It would have been better if they were tracked just like units, in the top UI. In addition to nanites, you require good standing with species to trade with their vendors. I haven’t found getting a higher standing with factions hard, so it seems to be a redundant requirement to buy technology.

Base Building in combination with the Exocrafts has breathed fresh air into the vacuum of No Mans Sky. I’ve found that it’s so much more rewarding to go exploring for a new, more beautiful base than before. I spent hours even off stream driving over vast terrain and surfing over giant oceans to find huge amounts of resources, put them in my cargo, and bring them back to my base for sorting or future selling. The best part, is you get to make a planet your own. Since most of my friends have moved onto newer games, I haven’t been able to take advantage of base sharing, which allows you and another player to share a base.

While all this new content really expanded the content and features of the game, the game still struggles with quality control, especially on PC. I’ve encountered multiple blockers like the client crashing, linear quests lines breaking, and more. Even smaller, annoying bugs like not being properly sat in your ship when boarding persist. This may have to do with during development, Hello Games didn’t have an in-house QA team, and relied on Sony’s QA.

To be fair, the game is really trying to do something no other game has done before. While it lacks in quality control, it makes up for in the sheer beauty of the game and unique gameplay. I really think if No Man’s Sky was released as Early Access, and reduced the price a bit, the game wouldn’t have received such hard criticism. There may have also been an expectations problem. No Man’s Sky was marketed as a AAA game, with an indie developer and publisher. If you can find this game on sale, or you have some extra money on hand, the game is much better than at launch and worth a try.

I bought the game back in 2016 and I totally fell for the hype. Like the majority of the playerbase at that time, I was disappointed and felt scammed. I started trying to figure out ways to get my money back, but eventually I just forgot about it and moved on.

Fast forward to today. The game has had a few updates, the hype is gone, expectations are extremely low. So I re-downloaded it

Fast forward to today. The game has had a few updates, the hype is gone, expectations are extremely low. So I re-downloaded it and started it up on my PS4 Pro, and I was truly surprised. Now, this game is certainly not for everybody, but it is leagues better than the NMS we saw at launch. The updates have added a lot to improve the experience, so if you are in the category of players who likes the concept and aesthetics of No Man's Sky, by all means give it second chance. The photo-mode is an excellent addition and I find myself spending a lot of time setting up those pretty shots.

Playing it again with the Atlas Rises Update (Aug/Sep 2017) and there is actually a game now, much improved over the original and really much more enjoyable. If you are someone that likes free exploration then this is for you. If you were disappointed the first time, try it again, it is much better.

No Man's Sky is a Comeback story, once was a lagging, broken, letdown of a game, is now a fun space odyssey unique to you. I find my self coming back to this game and I'm looking forward for future updates. My one complaint is that it crashes, and lags more often then you would like to see, though it is not a experience killing problem.

It's far from perfect that's for sure, but some of the more recent reviews are either made written by gamers who haven't played more than a few hours (shakes beer) or gamers like Ianmack who clearly is lying, because in 100 hours of gameplay, I have never not found an animal. He probably didn't read that it is only found in the north or south emisphere...

What I miss and hope they will implement sooner or later are cities. What I think is really annoying is that sometimes the game gives you the option to scan a planet from space and right when you activate the scanner the option fades and you have to wait for the scanner to recharge. Another thing I would love to see, are snowy paradise planets. All planets with snow have automatically a harsh environment. What stands out in this game is the community. Never experienced such a helpful gaming community. The game is definitely worth it in 2021 and I am pretty sure that it will be updated a lot in the future, adding many more features.

    JOURNEY TO THE CORE

    BEFORE WE START:
No Man's Sky was developed and published by Hello Games and released in 2016. This title was released under completely adverse conditions compared to those presented at various conventions and fairs, and therefore, it was heavily criticized. After dozens of updates, the game became very similar to what was originally announced. The title has been fully released on Game Pass PC.

    THE TAKE OFF:
No Man's Sky, as a pure survival game, instantly throws the player into the clutches of a planet immersed in the infinite universe. This planet can randomly be peaceful or malevolent, making the first steps more or less challenging depending on the type. The initial stages mainly involve learning the basics of survival, as well as constructing a small personal base. After these steps, the player will be unleashed into the universe of the Atlas, a mysterious deity or legend that requires the player to reach the center of the universe. As an interlude, the player can literally explore endless planets, take on dozens of side missions, and build bases on planets or immense frigates.

    STALENESS UNIVERSE:
The gameplay of No Man's Sky is as varied as it is repetitive. In addition to the mere survival aspect of collecting resources, surviving in hostile planets, and fighting sentinels, players can venture into cooperative missions and raids on frigates and outposts. Furthermore, a small part of the game certainly involves space battles, albeit very simple ones. The true heart of the gameplay in this immense title lies in the exploration of thousands of planets, which often differ greatly, and the various space wrecks. A small mechanic that encourages exploration is the bestiary and encyclopedia of creatures and objects on the planets, offering small rewards in currency.

    WHAT COLOR IS THE SPACE?:
Graphically, it is rather average, with a wide variety of designs and coloration of the different worlds. Certainly, the imagination behind some plants and creatures is exceptional.

    SCATTERED ECHOES:
The audio component, like the graphics, is average. However, its great merit lies in creating extremely relaxing and mesmerizing situations, with fitting soundtracks for deep space.

    BUT WHY 7?

    PROS:
No Man's Sky is currently an extremely enjoyable and relaxing title to play and explore. The vastness and creativity of the game world rarely become tiresome, and the game's writing is unique and detailed, keeping the player engaged. Additionally, the main story, being very philosophical, will certainly stimulate the minds of the most imaginative players.

    CONS:
The major problem with No Man's Sky lies in the immense repetitiveness that it reaches within a few days of gameplay. Every space station, NPC, planetary base, frigate, and most dialogues will always and uniformly be the same. Moreover, the game's strong survival aspect often leads to tedious farming sequences for normal gameplay actions. All these factors make it a highly enjoyable game even today, but it certainly doesn't lack some issues dating back to its release.

    RATINGS:
    Gameplay: 6.5
    Music: 7.5
    Story: 7

In addition to the slow pacing, there's a huge frustration with having to gather loads of resources to advance yourself and the inventory control is abysmal at-best. There's also some major bugs that crash the game about once or even twice per hour and it's seizing many consoles outside of my own. All said and done, Sony will probably be very displeased with how this game turned out after knowing it had a PC/PS4 exclusive day 1 - this won't win anyone over to buy a PS4 that doesn't already have one - that's unfortunate given how much this game was hyped by so many people. It's a curious release, because this type of space-exploration sandbox hasn't really been made with consoles in mind, yet Sony are the ones who've been beating the drum for this title. It's basically an exploration/survival game, with minimal crafting and adventure elements. If you came to this game expecting an epic, sweeping story, you will not find one. You effectively do the same thing in every star system and every planet, with very small, cosmetic alterations between them.

Even the much vaunted 'quintillion worlds' feature is a bit of a let-down as, apart from palette differences, most planets are created from the same few templates. Plants (flora) are especially indistinct, as every planet has the same basic types that contain iron, platinum, zinc, etc.

Also, the graphics are pretty poor; I own several consoles and a PC, and I know a console is never going to be cutting edge in terms of graphics, but this wouldn't look out of place on PS3. And I'm talking early-release PS3.

I've played the game quite a bit and there is a grim determination to the grind of upgrading, travelling to a new star system, searching for elements, etc. But where does it end? The game has three 'paths', but these are just a clever way of rationalising your gameplay type; explore, head for the end or just wander about randomly. They make no difference to the plot.

An odd choice for an AAA release, and an even odder choice for a tentpole console game. I can imagine this finding its audience in the Steam community, with mods and the like, but for £45/$60 on the PS4... What were Sony thinking?

There's very little new to do after you've played for an hour or so, and you'll just spend your time repeating same stuff over and over again.
I personally like games where you gather resources and build new items, but NMS isn't like that. There's very little to build, your inventory is too small, and mining resources becomes annoying fast.

All could be forgiven, but one thing really ruins the immersion. NMS has a system, where your weapon and armor require recharging from time to time. This requires you to go to the menu, choosing your weapon/armor piece and then recharging them. This especially annoying when the ships thrusters need to be recharged too... after lifting of the ground 4 times. 4 TIMES.
You don't want to explore the planet since it's too big to walk around in and you're forced to mine resources just to get of the ground all the time.

Honestly, as it is now I wouldn't recommend buying NMS.

I dislike the repetition, bugs (3 crashes and a save data wipe in the last 5 hours, not ideal) and grind-heavy gameplay

Yet for all of its grandeur, it lack longevity, and the experience is a fleeting one. Hello Games has made a empty corpse. Imagine going to a massive party, and being the only one there. For a company with a name that is a social greeting, they mist their opportunity to make one of the most inspiring social experiments yet. They say they want you to feel small and show the scope of reality, and while that is amazing, I also play games to have fun. That said, I always tend to have fun with friends and other people in general. When thinking of what this game could have been at the pinnacle of its hype, I thought about how cool it could be to wage galactic war in a glorious infinite game world. A game where you could make your own faction, your own kingdom. Hello games has some amazing ground work here, but until the shell is filled, they have something just OK. I hope that this game is one that continues to expand. They are withholding one of modern gaming's treasures from us, a social No Man's Sky would be the definitive social experience, if only. So until we can wage war to claim the sky, I will say no to fully recommending this game, although it is fun in bursts, there is nothing long term here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been following the game since the 2014 reveal, I've watched pretty much all the interviews and was very hyped for the game. As person who enjoys Sci-Fi, particular Star Trek, Stargate etc.. I thought this could be the game of my dreams.
But now after 2 weeks I have come to find the game being shallow. Most of the worlds I have seen have been varied of content, specifically animals, weather and colour pallet. But there is about 50% of the stuff (flora and fauna) you see that are all the same just a different name/colour.
The gameplay mechanics is very dumbed down from all those videos. The game is nothing like the videos. Now I will say I never expected to see anything like that 2014 E3 video, but I did expect the gameplay to be better. FInding material in the game is very very frustrating, being a Sci-Fi themed game you'd think you'd have the ability to scan for certain materials and not just hope to find some. It's become very tedious. The whole Suit and Ship upgrade system is dull, the space combat is boring. The Story is, missing and broken. All my Atlas way points take me away from the centre.
And now the actual point of the game, traveling to the centre. It's dull, it's slow and at the centre [spoiler] Its a kick in the teeth[/spolier]
I really wanted this to succeed, maybe it's my own fault in believing HG were developing a mind blowing engine. But its repetitive, un-exciting and I have no wish to play it any more.
A AAA price for a indie game, I should have known better.

I feel like I have a good general sense for what can be accomplished given X developers and Y years. I never believed that Hello Games (HG) could actually deliver everything they were promising. I went into this game with pretty moderate expectations, I think.

Nonetheless I am a bit disappointed. HG failed to execute as well as they needed to on the game's central mechanic: the procedural generation of worlds and lifeforms. They're all only superficially different in terms of appearance, and in terms of what there is to do on each world, there is virtually no difference.

But the worst part is that each world is entirely uniform. On a real planet (Earth) there are deserts, jungles, alpine regions, ice caps, oceans, etc. In NMS, each planet has exactly one biome and there is no difference no matter where on the planet you go.

I understand that procedural world generation is a hard problem, but they simply did not do this well enough to give the game lasting replayability. There is obviously no simulation of plate techtonics, solar activity, wind patterns (and the affect mountains, etc have on them), impact events, ocean currents, temperature, or anything like that (community-made map generators for Civilization IV, for example, did all that). It seems like they just roll a die and decide "this shall be a jungle world", then they roll another die and decide "all the trees on this planet will be red or orange", then they roll some more dice to decide what resources the planet has, etc. It doesn't seem like these things have much, if any, effect on each other, and they apply to the entire world equally. If you explore 1 square km of a planet, you've pretty much seen the whole thing.

There are no mountains or oceans in NMS. The best you're gonna do are big hills and medium sized lakes. And apparently those lakes are filled with something other than water since they are still liquid even when the planet is -40 C.

But I didn't give it a zero, so what's good? Well, it is maybe 15-30 hours of good fun until the sameness really starts to get to you. There is content here, but it's far from limitless like it was supposed to be. When you find the first planet that you're able to call beautiful, you really do get a great feeling of discovery. It's easy to spend a lot of time just running around and taking screenshots. And that's true on the second and third such planet, too. The fourth? Maybe a little bit. But it's all downhill from there as you realized none of them are actually that different.

You can tell from pre-release demos and marketing material that the devs were playing builds that had a lot more content than what was released (and their failure to communicate that has justifiably upset a lot of people). The good news there is that perhaps it means we're going to get a more varied experience soon via patches. I just really hope they work on their procedural generation algorithms and give us worlds that are more worth exploring.

I have only been to five separate star systems and my exo-suit already has thirty slots. My Spaceship on the other hand only has nineteen but I am saving up for a ship that has twenty-eight. The graphics are about as good as your going to get for the scope of the game. The combat is secondary to the exploration so don't go into this game expecting COD style of combat. The resource system is ok given that you will be constantly using them if you take your sweet time exploring a planet (I usually take an hour or two). Since the ships and weapons come with upgrades already built in, you don't really have to worry about building upgrades right off the bat. If you do find upgrades that are better then what are currently on the weapon then just dismantle and craft the better ones, same thing with ships ect. The mix of planets, animals, different aliens make this game enjoyable but still feel like something is missing. For all these people who have been complaining about the game, they need to put more time in before reviewing. It's not fair to the developers and not fair to other gamers coming here for a n honest opinion. Expand

A innovate idea badly explored. Great random level design formula but it generates too similar planets with different color palettes with less or more fauna and flora. Very weak combat system and story. Technically poor with low resolution textures and despite the generating formula the deja vu feeling´s always present.

The map system is lacking, it can be a real hassle to revisit points of interest. Ive also crashed more times in 2 days than any of the other PS4 games I've played - combined.
That being said, with a few tools and additions, this game could be amazing. The foundation is there. Base building would be a start, but we need better map options, greater customization, more lively advanced lifeforms, and most of all... co-op.

I don't really know where to begin. The only thing i can do is describe how i feel playing it. I am fascinated. I am intrigued. I am absolutely relaxed. I have only spent about 9 hours in the game so far, and all of that was exploring just 3 planets in the system i materialised in. I found myself fascinated by the mystery of these weird aliens, the craziness of the randomly generated worlds and just exploring.

I cannot describe how relaxing i find playing this game. Nor can i explain how confused my brain gets when i try to fathom just how big it all is. The music is a special mention here, it is SO very relaxing.

For all its good there are some negatives. I hate having to constantly refuel everything, it is tiresome. The FOV is poor. The popin and low rent texture work along with bad aliasing at times is quite an eyesore. Buti can look beyond these for what the game gives to me.

I feel as though this is a game i probably should have bought on PC to get rid of fhe visual drawbacks on pS4.

As i said at the beginning, this is not a game for everyone. People will hate it, there are already a ton of negative comments.

I for one did not get caught up in any self driven hype, i had no expectations justa desire to experience what this amazing created. And i am honestly happy they made what they have, it is a truly fascinating experience and unique amongst a sea of rehashed genres and "definitive editions". I look forward to exploring this amazing universe for years to come.

Please be proud of your work Hello Games.

By the sounds of things Hello Games are going to be constantly updating this game adding new features which i am hopeful will alleviate some of the grind.

Now for one of the even bigger gripes the price here in the UK i picked this game up for £46 in comparison the most recent Uncharted game cost me only £42, out of all my PS4 game purchases this so far is the worst value for money i honestly can't see myself still playing No Man's Sky in a couple of weeks let alone months.

    Update (30/08/2016)
Still rated a 6/10 for me but it is pushing up towards a 7/10 i have found the key to enjoying No Man's Sky more is to play in small chunks an hour here and there between other games reduces the frustration that develops after long periods of play which i was finding.

Hello Games have also been improving the game we are currently up to patch 1.07 hopefully more features will be upcoming in the near future updates.

The procedural generation of planets is pretty cool and at times I've been wowed by what I've come across, but the real problem is the gameplay just kind of sucks. It relies heavily on crafting, but the crafting is pretty meh. There is some fighting, but it's basically the same stuff over and over and the fighting itself is also very meh. The universe, lore, and NPCs are also very meh, so the only really good thing is the procedural generation. I honestly don't think the title is really salvagable (there's talk of base building, but who wants to stay on one planet), and I'm not sure Hello Games will have much cred after this title, so it's probably going to be a interesting one off.

The universe is near endless and each planet will have wildlife and environment of its own, although it is picked from a palette, so to speak. If you have visited 50 planets, make no mistake, this game will not be a wondrous one where content will still magically always feel fresh. Soon enough, you will discover similarities.

It would be a huge mistake to get this game only based in an interest in exploration.

Even in my first visited planet, I faced a creature of almost identical design that I had previously seen in preview screenshots, and I hadn't even been deep into spoilers. What's worse, the design was weird and really out there. But still -- near identical to the same, strange creature I had already seen before even playing the game. This was a huge disappointment and indicative of what was to come.

No, this game is not first and foremost about exploration. That is merely the backdrop, only a part of what is meant to keep you going. The main attraction here is survival. Recharging your exosuit by minerals you have mined in quite typical Minecraft sense, only with a gun rather than an axe. Upgrading your weapons and spacecraft, and so on.

This game feels like 60% about mining/trading/surviving, 30% about exploring and discovering new worlds, and 10% about combat of various beings on planets and in space, combat an afterthought. Please note that exploration would then consitute to a mere third of the game experience.

You need to love other things than exploring to enjoy this game.

    That is the game's problem.

It is very shallow in content besides exploring.

If you're happy farming planets for the same elements over and over, and love the challenges of freeing up inventory space constantly (this does annoy me), then you will love it. The soundtrack is great, it does a great job of setting the tone and atmosphere of this experience. The art style is very good, too. Very nice visuals. And the sense of scale is great too. The planets are massive, the landscapes are very sweeping and lengthy. But this game does a lot more things wrong. The planets all look exactly the same, you do exactly the same things on every damn planet, and last but not least, the 'center of the universe' is very poorly executed. When you tap the button to go there, the center just teleports even further away. And if you follow it, the center just constantly escapes your grasp every damn time. This stuff is completely stupid and illogical. With multiple delays, huge anticipation, and a full 60$ price at launch, No Man's Sky feels like an unfinished, poorly built tech demo.

Edit: (9-5-2016) Around 100 hours of gameplay and I have "finished" the game. This "ending" is disappointing and unsatisfying. Changed my rating from 9 to 6.

I read a lot about repetition in this game being very stale. From one perspective, that's perfectly understandable, but perhaps I choose a different point of view. For example, I think GTA and COD are overwhelmingly stale and repetitive. MOBA games are very repetitive, Destiny is the very definition of repetitive; yet many people like those games and while consistently complaining about them still religiously play them. Thus my review recommends that gamer's embrace the new idea's No Man's Sky is trying to create. See if you can't join the developers in the feelings that they have about this game. Though, read GameSpot's review for a precise description.

This game exceeds my expectations and is an example I will use henceforth of how one can disagree with the critics. We all know the internet mob is emotional and undependable, but the real surprise for me is that even my most trusted critics, while making great points, don't rate this game high enough in my opinion. It's fantastic and I'm thoroughly excited about it.

Perhaps since I kept out of social media and read some weekly articles over time, I was never really on the melodramatic hype wagon like everyone else. Though most assuredly I was hyped about this game for almost a year. MOST THINGS that Sean Murray talked about is in the game. Speaking from just over 20 hours of game play, I feel he was very precise and gracefully cautious with his details. The more he puts out on topic of this game and the more I learn about his team, the better I understand what this game is about. Thus I find a certain way of enjoying it that seems totally new and fresh to me. It's not really like any other game, in a big picture kind of way.

Pros: It's a lot of fun to fly around space and in and out planets/space stations/solar systems. I like discovering new plants, regions, animals, resources, aliens, and languages. The game has no tutorial, which to me, thrust me into a complete "explorer type" experience. Basically, throwing me into a unforgiving universe and forcing me to figure s*** out for myself. Thus, I teach myself damn near everything and therefor have a more personal connection with my own gaming story line, both good and bad.

Cons: Combat is meh, I feel Space Combat is fun, but still meh. Loneliness is a good and bad thing, comparable to my feelings when playing Shadow of the Colossus. The biggest con is of course not having multiplayer. But, that does disagree with the founding intention of the dev's plan for the game, so I tend to be forgiving of this aspect as I like the current "explorer type" experience.

What I and everyone else believed it to be was the next big thing. Halo and Half-Life 2 were the next big things, changing the way how we saw FPS's. GTA 3 revolutionized the idea of what a sandbox could be. I thought No Man's Sky would change what games could be. It has the space to do that, but it currently has nothing other than the foundation dug out.

That's why I say in five years, this game will be one of the best ever. The developers have so much to work on, but if they follow through on their promise to provide free (or at least frequent) updates, it will turn out to be amazing.

The planets are pretty much the exact same just with different colours and skins. Animals on each planet also look the same. Game constantly crashes when uploading discoveries and warping and landing and the textures just take too long to load at points. The colouring of the game is an eye killer also.

However, good that this is the first of its kind in the genre of game and hopefully there will be similar games but executed much better in future. Did enjoy for a bit but once I got platinum on the game there's nothing else to do apart from keep warping to the centre of the galaxy.

No Man's Sky shines brightest when your boots are on the ground of a planet and you're wandering around collecting resources, scanning animals, plants and rocks and spelunking in a cave. Bizarre design choices not withstanding (like not having access to a map or being able to set waypoints on a planet), this is where I find myself enjoying the game the most. However, the actual in-space portions of No Man's Sky leave a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, if you want a good space sim where you can be a bounty hunter, pirate or a trader and actually have a meaningful game experience then there really is nothing to see here; maybe try Elite: Dangerous instead. That game has a much more nuanced flying experience, an actual functioning inter-galactic economic system, warring factions to join or oppose and actual maps and other UI systems to keep you informed and engaged with the content.

Unless Hello Games does some major work to completely retool the space portion of this game, fix their lack of maps, waypoints and necessary user interface options then it will remain a very one-sided experience and will continue to be only half of a potentially awesome game.

No Man's Sky is underwhelming. Beautiful colors, amazing soundtrack, a heavy sense of loneliness in the vastness of the universe. But its vastness is filled with mundane tasks and NPC that might as well be just posters because you can't really interact with them. You are the only one doing something in this universe and even you don't know what's that exactly. It has some bugs but nothing like FO4. They don't ruin the experience, just break the immersion a bit.

Planets are really diverse but what's on them isn't. It's always some monolites, the outpost, the storage upgrade, the broken ship and the antennas. Then you collect some resources and travel to the next planet or star until you're killed by bandits.

I'll keep trying but I see this game getting old pretty quickly, unfortunately. It opens up a new range of promising possibilities for game development, though. Let's hope its legacy remains positive to the industry.

This game is all about grinding. You collect material to fuel your ship to go to another place to collect fuel for your ship. Sometimes your buy a new ship, but the weapons will be the same and you'll probably just end up having more room to collect fuel for your ship.

The beta feel is only enhanced by the several small flaws in the game that really add up to make things tedious and frustrating. Ridiculously slow walking speeds. Constantly fueling up the eight or so things that need fuel. The awkward cursor movement with an analogue stick to control everything in the menus. The rendering distance is similar to Playstation 2 era graphics, not PlayStation 4.

Most of the joy comes from finding a really interesting combination from the procedurally generated worlds, but after a while, you only start to see the individual parts of the whole. Four-legged guy with fins. Four-legged guy with horns. Oh! Four-legged guy with fins and horns!

Occasionally the game generates something exotic; a toxic planet where the plants grow gemstones, policed by robots, or a bumbling creature I called the Jellyphant. The question is whether it's worth five hours of your life between each memorable discovery.

You should probably play this. Keep any eye on the inevitable DLC. And I want them to do a sequel. But keep your expectations low, this is not Game of the Year.

Graphically, stunning - not realistic, but graphically stunning (especially when in your ship).

Audio - simply mind blowing. Best played with a good set of headphones, for sure!

Those things are fantastic, until I sat down and did the maths of how many times the game crashed (with the 1.03 patch, mind you) when I entered warp - a staggering 25-30% crash rate!

Let me start by saying this game is a technological marvel, to a degree. The feeling you get when flying from planet to planet within a cluster, sans loading screens, is somewhat fantastic. But, the wonder ends shortly after you realize the lack of content in this game. Every space station is the same, every cluster of buildings of a certain type are identical. Every outpost that's been in disrepair EXACTLY the same. The aliens you encounter have little to no variety. And you'll never run across a place that feels...well, real. There's no real presentation of the alien culture in a way that's unique and meaningful. The loose narrative associated with the game's "Path" you can choose to go on fails to land home. The exploration of this game falls into a quick pattern that easy to see, and loses its charm almost exactly at that moment.
I really wanted to like this game... but for $60 this game feels like it's a rip-off. I've seen games like Starbound or Terraria put together better experiences with less, and at half the price. As is, I feel like this game should be about that price too.
It just feels incomplete. In making such a large universe made after such a small set of possibilities, they made the whole thing uninspiring.
I don't expect they'll really expand upon the game, either. They're a small studio with limited resources-- they'll probably be fixing bugs for the foreseeable future, and not be able to put in new features like multiplayer. Which was promised with the game's announcement, and many interviews with the lead developer, and didn't launch with the game at all.
    An overall disappointment.

First off I will say that I have enjoyed No Man's Sky immensely but once the honeymoon ended and the thrill of blasting off into space faded, I was left to ponder why I had played this game happily for as long as I had. After spending 30+ hours in the procedurally generated universe, I have been left with a bittersweet taste in my mouth. Do I love this game? Do I hate it? Or am I somewhere between both?
I have to say I am torn between wanting to put the disc in my PS4 and launch it into oncoming traffic like some sort of suicidal Frisbee. The inventory management is slow and clunky and the amount of materials you can store verses how much you need to have to fuel your ship and suit is extremely unbalanced, making you participate in a constant and repetitive loop that becomes very tiresome. Upgrades are in need of a tweak as well. I couldn't tell you how many times I have solved some puzzle or helped an alien to only find that I have been rewarded with technology I already have. I am starting to think that I have come across all the technology the game has to offer and that is a worry considering how much variety we were promised. It's a serious pain in the ass when you haven't been able to improve your gear and are locked in a snails pace while trying to reach the games end. Recent data-mining on the PC version have revealed that the demos we were shown leading up to the release were all scripted and far from random and the dinosaurs and planets we saw will not be in the final version, as they were made to look more earth like to be more aesthetically pleasing to the casual viewer, which really bothers me for some reason. The one thing that has kept me playing is the mystery that is waiting to be discovered in the center of this massive galaxy, but I still cant help but wonder if NMS would have benefited from being smaller in size and maybe if it were, then the limited variety of planets, animals and plants may not have been so noticeable. No Man's Sky has clearly fallen victim to corporate marketing and deadlines. It seems as though it was rushed towards the end of development and sadly we have seen many gameplay aspects cut from the final version. I have never seen a game crash my PS4 more than NMS has, it really hurts. It was clearly a rushed release. Planets do not rotate on their axis around their sun, moons do not orbit around their respected planet and they don't use real world physics to generate the climates and resources on planets. There is no such thing as running water, waterfalls, streams, nothing, just stagnant water. It just doesn't live up to what Sean Murray once said and I cant help but think this had something to do with Sony pushing Hello Games to a release before the game was finished, which resulted in certain aspects of the game having to be cut and maybe added to the game later through DLC. With all that being said, it is still very interesting and satisfying to play and I cant wait to see what Hello Games add to it through future patches and updates. NMS has the potential to be something that will last for years to come but right now it is something that will last a few months before being silently swept under the rug. With a few tweaks here and there and some added content, NMS will be what everyone wanted. I take my hat off to the developers for creating something fresh and for being as ambitious as they were, its a true testiment to how talented these guys are. Maybe next time Sony can help with the actual development and funding of the game, rather then market and push something they have no part in helping create. Its Great, Its Good, It's Bad, It's Ugly

This game is great for exploration aspects, which is how it was designed. The high initial price tag and ridiculous hype created much more negative reaction than it deserves.

The greatest aspect of the game is that you can name the planets and fauna (and flora is your really keen) and know someone else may discover it (though it should be easier for someone to discover your planets).

The greatest aspect of the game is that you can name the planets and fauna (and flora is your really keen) and know someone else may discover it (though it should be easier for someone to discover your planets). When I was doing it properly I found I actually came up with cool interesting names for all the planets and animals in a system. I think I could actually be a good explorer after all! Other times it was a laugh to see how obscene I could make the name and have it pass the profanity filter! This by far the best aspect of the game.

Whilst there is one really good aspect to the game, there are a number of negatives. The grinding is very tedious, I never bothered with any of the new technologies anyway. The space battles were OK, but mostly I wished they would go away, I wasn't harming anyone. There was also a lot of reading required!

For all the well publicized tedious irritating aspects this game has one brilliant aspect in the exploration that is overlooked. This game would not interest most people, but if you has some interest in being able to name the animals and planets in our galaxy, this is a great simulator. By now this game must be a sensible price and the tedious aspects are probably worth baring for this!

And this game is a perfect example of that. But if you ignore the hype, ignore the exceptionally high expectations, what you are left with is a game that completely fulfills its intended purpose of appeasing interstellar wanderlust. As a species we are obsessed with the sky. Our ancients used to worship it, study it, and live by it. Outer space is more than a just a vast place. It is a terrifying and curious testament to what it means to be human in this universe. It intrigues and fascinates us. All the while reminding us of how small and insignificant we must be in a place so extensively vast. I am fueled by a hunger for knowledge. And as a child I would look at the night sky and be overcome with the desire to just get a glimpse of what's out there. This game finally gave me that glimpse. When I first played it I was returned to that small child and I was able to satisfy his cravings if only slightly. Of course the game could have been better. Sure. I can list a million differences I'd have made. But can any of us truly thing of a game we wouldn't at least change something about? I firmly believe that this games problem was an overshot of their market. Far too much anticipation on a far too massive scale. If the game makers had remained humble, and didn't try to oversell it, I believe we'd see a much different response. This is not a game for everyone. And it should not have been marketed as such. This is a game for a very specific demographic. The people needing to ease the heavy sensation of interstellar wanderlust. The people who just need to taste the stars for no other reason other than the sake of doing so. Expand

Within the world of video games is the great misunderstood. Walk simulator, beautiful landscapes, history without history and a disconnected online are some of the positive points of this game, for the rest, go to the real world and you will see that perhaps the game is more like reality than a game of fiction.

You have to be realistic.

Having said all that, the game does suffer with an inability to drive the player, to explore. This is because the bulk of the game revolves around collecting resources to explore to collect resources. NMS is a fantastic exploration game and for many, demonstrates what is might be like to live a life in the stars. My problems with this game are that once you have a base set up, what is there to do? There seems like so much could still be added and improved upon, for example you cannot roleplay as a pirate (which are in the game as they can attack you) and you cannot hate one of the factions as it isn't an option.

No Man's sky is a fantastic simulation of galactic exploration, there is no denying that, but I don't think it is a hugely successful game.

Hope, however, is different than hype and I think any reasonable person knew there was no way this game was going to live up to the hype generated over the years. The concept always reminded me of a cross between taking Mass Effect 1's Mako planet exploration, adding a bit of survival and resources management, and setting it all to some highly stylized graphics. On paper that sounded like a great combination. Unfortunately what was delivered was.. well, not so great.

To be clear, at time of typing, I've put 12 hours into the game because my schedule is such that I could do so. For the first several hours, I was completely and totally enthralled. It seemed like it was going to be everything I had hoped it would be. I was in love with going to different planets, finding new flora and fauna, discovering monoliths to learn new alien languages, and renaming my discoveries and posting them to Atlas. After about 4 hours though, the cracks started to show and they have only become worse as the game has progressed.

The planets (and moons) are often very lifeless and the animal life that DO populate them almost always follow the same patterns regardless of type. Don't expect to see any kind of food chain. Meanwhile, there are often vast stretches of space between points of interest (e.g. monoliths, settlements, etc.). Think of it this way: It's like Ubisoft open world games - you're spending a lot more time getting to points than doing anything worthwhile AT the points. In addition to this, I have not once felt like I was going to die. Not even when I managed to anger 4+ Sentinels. The various toxicities of the different planets are easily mitigated through resources and then made trivial by upgrades). I've yet to run into a single hostile animal type.

The enthusiasm you'll feel about learning new languages will wear off as soon as you end up progressing further towards the galaxy center, only to run into an entirely new alien race meaning you get to start learning another language ALL OVER AGAIN. More flying around endless planets looking for knowledge stones and monoliths just to transcribe a different "language". By the time you've made any significant headway, you're likely moving on to another star that may or may not have another alien race who you can't understand.

A tip for those who have the game or are buying it regardless: Save all your units and seek out Drop Pods: They offer the only way to expand your exosuit's inventory space and you're GOING to need it. At first I enjoyed the micromanagement of the different isotopes and minerals and vendor fodder items... but after 6 hours or so, it became needlessly tedious. Any time I land my ship now the very first thing I have to do is make sure I have a stockpile of plutonium - or check to make sure I landed near a good reserve. Ship inventory can only be upgraded by buying new ships - which run anywhere from 500K to 2M plus - so immediately upgrading your exosuit's inventory is probably the smartest early investment you can make.

Transit in space is ridiculously boring. Want to get to a new planet? Hold L1 and R1 for anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes while staring at a screen counting down the distance and your fuel. If you try to use traditional boosters, you'll take 10, 20, sometimes 50 times as long to get there. Going from one star system to another is basically the Destiny loading screen - uncontrollable wormhole animation while you wait for the game to load. Only for you to land into a solar system where you get to hold L1 and R1 for a minute or so again to get to the nearest planet or space station.

After 12 hours total played (not all at once, thank God), I'm already burned out. The exploration simply isn't rewarding enough - especially when you consider that almost NO ONE will EVER see the things you've discovered and named due to the way the game is designed - and the resource management becomes exceedingly bland and tedious. Nuke those trees because Carbon is better for your Multi-Tool and Life Support, but save that Plutonium and Thamium9 for your ship or else! Gather all these multi-tool upgrades, which you won't use many of because they each take up inventory slots that are too precious to waste on many of the situational upgrades, even if you get a multitool with 15+ slots like the one I managed to luck into through a monolith quest.

I don't even have enough characters left to get into the graphical problems of the game (lots of pop in and frame drops, it's like looking at a last gen Unreal Engine based game when devs still didn't quite know how to manage it) or the fact that the game has a nasty habit of crashing to dashboard with unexpected errors that sometimes wipes out your progress, or the fact that it frequently loses connection to the online service out of the blue. Just disappointing.

I started at 7/10 but after close to eight hours you can see it for what it is, a tech demo without substance.

What it isn't is a great game; they desperately need to sort out space combat, inventory management and controls (are you flying the spaceship or is it flying you?), Either way, you can only mine rocks for so long before you start questioning your very existence.

It's a passable game perhaps which with updates might become more interesting. Maybe.

    5/10 wouldn't hyperspace again.

They said it was going to be a basically infinite universe to explore and no two gamers will see the exact same thing. It may be procedural generation, but for me, knowing that the game world isn't concrete set and is just being created in the background as I go along, that lessens the impact for me. They were trying to make you feel special like you stumbled upon a world or some feature that no one else has seen, but it's just the engine throwing random crap at you. What incentive do I have, other than a few extra credits, to name my discoveries? Oh I found a new species of mushroom called Vergaboichthalzwhatchamacallit... who cares unless you're the Charles Darwin of open world games? It doesn't help that the randomness is very shallow and the themes repetitious, at least in my 6-7 hrs of play time so far. Maybe it really opens up later, but my overall impression is that the juice isn't worth the squeeze on this high ambitious but ultimately flawed adventure. I guess it boils down to what type of game you are expecting NMS to be, considering the extreme hype surrounding everything, and also what kind of gamer you are. It's just not a game that I think about and can't wait to pick up again like some others. It feels TEDIOUS, that is the best word I can summarize it with. Expand

I'm an older gamer (39) and my preference is mostly towards FPS games (Project Reality, CS:GO, Red Orchestra, Insurgency, Mass Effect) but recently moved over to console exclusively as it is more relaxing. I love open-world games like GTA V (except for slow multiplayer loading times). For the larger games like Skyrim, Fallout, and Witcher I never fully finish them. As much as I love their worlds, you can still grow tired of them.

No Man's Sky was destined to be divisive. Early-buyer disappointment could have been avoided if we were shown more of the specific gameplay upfront. This is on both Sony and Hello Games. They had a masterful marketing campaign underway, and it appears they gambled on withholding gameplay to maximize anticipation/revenue. In many ways, it is exactly what has been shown in the trailers, and conversely, no more than what is shown. There are hidden mysteries, and details. You have a sense of player agency that is boundless yet sharply limited by the mechanics.

You will get tired of No Man's Sky, but for some you will return to it, to visit, like you would a familiar destination. It's predictable, yet always different. No Man's Sky is mathematical beauty. It is just touching the surface of what will be possible using generative algorithms. To me, part of the beauty of what No Man's Sky is what it represents, is what is possible in years to come. We will have our holodeck, so patience. In the meantime enjoy this for what it is.

Want to go into space? More resource grinding. Want to upgrade your ship? More resource grinding. Find a new technology in one of the identical bases scattered across the planet? More resource grinding.

At $80 there's just not enough here to suggest buying it. What there is is a cautionary note that millions of procedurally generated planets aren't content all on their own, at least not enough to make up for the lack of anything meaningful to do or interact with. At $30 or $40 I'd be a lot more inclined to recommend it - wait for a sale.

Is it worth a buy? Nah, not really, because despite how big the universe presented here is, it really is stunning just how small and inconsequential the actual game is - no emergent storytelling, but plenty of floaty flying in a big universe (albeit a constantly repetitive one, as despite being procedurally generated, it re-uses assets all the time.)

You can safely ignore this one, and wait to pick it up on sale when/if it drops to a more reasonable price point of around £15.

Visually the game is pretty, yet bland at the same time. The worlds all look unique, kind of. But after a while the worlds can just be simplified: Toxic, Ice, Radiation, Hot, Rainy, Barren, Water, Nice. Even though they are all procedurally generated they all fit into at least one of those categories. Same more or less applies to all the Flora, Fauna and buildings. Don't get me wrong, at first it's really cool. But after about the 10th or so planet repetition and tedium kick in.From that point it's just the same thing over and over with practically no real payoff.

The music and sound are great. The score kind of reminds me of a cross between the soundtrack of the Dig and the ambient music of Minecraft.

For all the gripe I still enjoyed it, or at least the first 10 - 20 hours. No Man's Sky feels like it was trying too hard to be something it's not. Yet this game does give me hope. The concept is solid and I truly hope other developers use what this game does right. If anything this game is a stepping stone for other great things. A milestone in gaming, provided it doesn't get buried in its own controversy.

    Overall:
No Man's Sky is a decent game that hyped itself up too much. Clearly it could be improved allot, but we should not overlook all the things it does right. Hopefully a bigger developer might step in and apply the ideas to their game. Imagine what Bethesda or Bioware could have done with this (aside from DLC'ing it to death.)

    Tip:
Don't underestimate how far the Galactic core is. Always jump as far as your engines will allow.
Scan and upload everything you see.
Don't upgrade your initial weapon or ship more than you need to. +26 ship size and +22 Weapon size is when you focus on upgrades.
Sigma < Tau < Theta < Omega. Always aim to have the highest. Only need to have 1 of each item on the exosuit, no need stack those things.
Grenade launcher is great if you get lost in caves. Just shoot your way out.

When I first started the game up, I was completely awed by the sense of scale that this game had. Zooming out on the galaxy map made you really feel like you were in the biggest sandbox in gaming history. The lack of loading between space and ground is remarkable, the procedurally generated worlds looked unique and polished, and I can't overstate how incredible an accomplishment this is for a developer team as small as Hello Games.

After about 10 hours, that initial shine has begun to tarnish and the core gameplay elements are overshadowing the amazement that I experienced at first. Despite the fun mini-quests of distress calls, crashed ships, and language research, and the path of the Atlas and quest to get to the center of the galaxy, I couldn't help but ask myself "...is this it?" In a universe of 18 quintillion planets, with essentially limitless possibilities of animals, plants, planets, encounters, and more, I felt like I would just be doing the same thing, over and over again, on a new planet as I follow a path towards one of two unknown, unexplained purposes.

Resource gathering is far too simple, as nearly anything you need to gather is within a minute's walk from your ship. There was never a time where I felt panicked over not having enough of a resource for any of my essential systems. Space combat basically consists of enemies flying away from you, turning around, and flying straight at you over and over until one of you dies.

I understand the importance of freedom in this game, when they advertised "trade-explore-fight-survive" as the four pillars of the game. But there was never really a point where I felt like "I'll become a pirate!" or "I'll become an explorer!" because all four of those elements are so interwoven and equally as important that it's essentially impossible to survive by doing just one of them.

However, more than anything, you just feel alone in an impossibly big universe, where you never encounter more than one NPC at a time unless there are multiple ships sitting in the same hanger. The lack of multiplayer support (and I'm not a huge multiplayer person) in a game of this size just doesn't make sense. As I wandered around, cataloguing animals and talking with the one NPC stationed in each outpost, I felt like what I was doing would have absolutely zero impact on the universe, because nobody would ever know I was there.

Hopefully, as the devs release new content and add more elements to the game, it will become what everyone wants it to be. For now, it's just another survival-crafting game, albeit one set in an amazingly large sandbox made by an amazingly small team of people.

Not enjoyable, managing your always plummeting resources is frustrating and boring. Sean Murray's comments on finding your friends in game were completely false. He absolutely lead us to believe it had multiplayer gameplay. Ironically, if they actually had multiplayer it would have helped this game tremendously.

Extremely dissatisfied and disappointed. However, we need to consider that ths game was made by a tiny team. The disappointment was caused by terrible marketing and false advertising. It is an average game with very impressive tech.

So much promise. Such little delivery. The day before No Man's Sky came out, I realized that the game would never be able to live up to the hype that it created. The day before No Man's Sky came out, I realized that the game would never be able to live up to the hype that it created. How did this revelation come about? Well, that was the day Sean Murray, the game's lead developer, tweeted that the game wouldn't feature multiplayer. This is a problem because in previous interviews, Sean promised that you would be able to play with your friends. Trust me, this isn't the only thing Sean lied about, but there's way more videos and articles out there that go way more in-depth about this topic, so go find those if you want to learn more. Anyways, I was perfectly fine if the game didn't live up to all of the hype, as long as it was still a great game. Well, let me say it's not. It's not a good game, not even an okay one. It's just mediocre. For those who don't know what this game is, it's one of the most ambitious games ever made. The game is meant to give you a glimpse of the size of the universe. So then how big is it? Try 18 quintillion planets to explore big. It delivers on this promise because the open world is huge, so it's safe to say that this is officially the largest game ever created. But as we've seen with past open world games, a larger world could mean that there's less to do. This is definitely a complaint for this game. It's a survival game, but unlike another survival game like Minecraft, you're very limited in what you're able to do. After a strong introduction where you repair your crashed ship, you then have to build a warp drive so you can travel to different galaxies. This is still cool. But after your first time travelling to a different galaxy, the game drops in entertainment value sooooooooooooooo much. From this point on, all you are doing is collecting resources to fuel your warp drive so you can reach the center of the universe. Not only does this get tedious as quickly as the second time you do it, it also progressively gets more frustrating to complete this task. Maybe it's just from personal experience, but almost none of the planets I found had the resources I needed. This meant I had to jump from planet to planet before I finally found what I required. On top of that, you have to deal with the smallest inventory in the world, even with the addition of being able to move items to your ship. When you run out of space, you'll have to find an outpost that may or may not have a store, or go all the way back to the ONE SINGULAR SPACE STATION IN AN ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEM! It's flat-out annoying, and borderline intolerable. Going back to planets, I'm gonna close off with the game's biggest issue: planetary design. Sean Murray promised that almost every planet was going to be unique, with some desert planets having dunes and little vegetation, or a tropical planet being mostly water and having underwater outposts and bases. None of this is in the game. After my first planet, every single one after that felt barren and empty. I know it sounds like a lot of work trying to make all 18 quintillion planets different, but if they knew they weren't going to be able to deliver that, they shouldn't have promised it. In the end, it comes down to the fact that Hello Games promised way more than they could give with No Man's Sky, and rather gave us a mediocre game that is nowhere near to earning it's $60 asking price. 5/10. While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
