The game is mediocre and that's that. It's intriguing for the first few hours but after that the game fails to keep you interested in a very bleak universe. I also had some a few crashes altough all the drivers are up to date, etc. Basically the game has almost no depth. I prefer to have 10000 more diverse planets or even 1000 instead of 18 quintillion of almost the same planet.

No Man's Sky: Hello Games has built something quite impressive, unfortunately it doesn't make for a very enjoyable game.

At exactly 21:00 on the launch day, I started up NMS and prepared for a new experience. I knew it wasn't from a big studio, so the finished product wouldn't be as polished as possible, but the premise was really interesting: survive and explore an incredible Galaxy with unique planetary systems, creatures, and aliens. It was amazing seeing the first planet, trying to gather the resources to repair my ship while interacting with the environment. The colours were beautiful in parts, and the animals humorous in their own Island of doctor Monroe way. When I finally repaired the initial engines on my ship, it was thrilling to take off and leave the planet for open space. Following this, it was a bit jaw dropping travelling through the planetary system. I began to realize just how big the scale of this game was during this time. It was all a bit mind blowing for the first couple of hours.... Once I repaired and fuelled my warp drive, I experienced another moment of excitement as I took off to a new star to begin my exploration.

It was at about 0:00, perhaps 3 or so hours in, that my enjoyment with NMS took a steep plunge. As I travelled from one star to another, explored planet after another, met one alien race then others, fought in space and on the ground, I started to see just how little resides outside of that first 3 hour experience. In just a few hours I was seeing repeat creatures, planets that I would be hard pressed to tell you how they differed beyond lighting, and the grind it takes to move around the galaxy just to see pretty much the exact same thing.

I believe Hello Games have created something impressive, something that can be so huge and just work... However the mechanics behind the game are decidedly below average, with the survival, fighting, and mining aspects feeling tacked on just to pad out the game. But the base of the game? Exploration leaves so incredibly much to be desired when after just 10-20 hours in a galaxy with 18 quintillion "uniqiue" planets, you feel like you've seen it all.

To me it seems like HG conducted the hype train, which Sony helped them create with their marketing and $60 price tag, straight to the bank. I'm sure this means HG will have the resources to make a much better game in the future, but I would prefer to wait for another studio to do it better. As I said, Hg have done something quite impressive, but it isn't usually the first mover that makes the best use of the tools available... Give this one a pass, there's a ton of potential in this genre for more well rounded and capable studios.

    It's difficult to review a game that technically could never end. How can you be sure that you have seen everything the game has to offer and provide an accurate, objective response to that?     It's difficult to review a game that technically could never end. How can you be sure that you have seen everything the game has to offer and provide an accurate, objective response to that? In reality, you could play No Man's Sky for hundreds of hours, but you would have seen the vast majority of what it has to offer after the first ten or so hours. Firstly, the positives;

I love that there are no huge storyline objectives, it is nice not to constantly have reminders popping up telling you to do something, I also like that the game doesn't really force you to do anything unless you want to (going to certain areas or progressing the very thin storyline). It is a relaxing experience, you fly or walk around planets, collect resources to make equipment / upgrades / quest items and to progress. You also have the option to scan the wildlife and upload to a database in exchange for credits.
The planets and creatures are procedurally generated, which makes each experience unique, considering the potentially infinite number of planets, is impressive. However, throughout my time exploring the solar systems, the planets and environments tended to feel a bit similar.

However, despite the relaxing nature of the game and the beautiful vistas it creates, it's novelty does wear thin after a few hours. It quickly becomes apparent that you don't really do anything. What you do in the game is repeated again and again. Fly to a planet, explore, craft items, explore a bit more, discover an outpost, get bored, fly to another planet. Repeat. None of the planets or galaxies seem to have exclusive items or components (from what I saw). In each galaxy there are different aliens you can converse with (usually giving them an item or purchasing an item), throughout each planet are monoliths that you can learn words from, unfortunately, all of the Alien races more or less say or do the same thing. Collecting the words felt like a pointless task, as from what I experienced, it doesn't have any effect on the outcome.

There is no doubt that the coding and development of the game is nothing short of extraordinary. As an experience, it's a fascinating one, it's just not much of a game. If the developers had spent more time fleshing out the storyline, making the combat more diverse and creating a game that is more exciting, it would have probably been the best game ever made.

It's a great concept, but the execution leaves room for immense improvement. Think of it as Minecraft with extra features (except, take out the ability to build constructs), or bare bones 3D StarBound.

-+ There is no hand holding. I think this is good and bad, because some of the important features it doesn't even mention. A better middle ground can be found here.

+ The audio is good. I'm a fan of the music.

+ I've stood in awe of some landscapes.

+ The monoliths tell an interesting story that I care to hear more about.

    - I spent a great deal of time in my home system, and after leaving it I found that the next system over is, from a gameplay perspective, identical. The only differences is that there's some snow on a few more planets. The animals look a little different but that's of little consequence, they all behave the exact same way either passively roaming or aggressively charging. The resources for the most part look identical, save if you harvest the foliage. The settlements are identical except for a few, slight cosmetic changes.

    - Ground combat is meh as it heavily relies on auto-aim and there's really no strategy to it. Space combat is awkward at best, and boring and frustrating at worst. I'm not a huge fan of the right stick causing my in-ship camera to pan around the cockpit as if that feature would ever be useful. The only utility that serves is to create a slightly more scenic and I'm guessing an immersive experience but it causes the flying to be uncomfortable for me.

    - The inventory system is inconvenient, causing you to have to shuffle through multiple pages to sometimes find a recipe. Some items can't be moved at all causing your upgrades to be dotted throughout the menu randomly if you don't place it intelligently, or receive it that way. There is no sorting system.

    - The life in general seems hallow, and constantly reminds me that this is all a mirage. Ships land and within a minute take off again as if they forgot something at home. Intelligent aliens all behave the exact same, and in general all look alike within the same species. Ships streak through the sky, but if followed do absolutely nothing besides fly around for infinity. Frigates warp into sight but just sit there and do absolutely nothing after warping in.

    - Playing the trade market is a profitable thing to do in some games that have that feature, but so far I can't tell if there's a way to actually make it worth my while. Buying an Atlas Stone for 2 million credits only to sell it for a max of 70,000? That doesn't look like a system that was made to profit off of.

    - Why do I have essentially 4 health bars? There's Life Support, environmental protection (this may have a better name), shielding, and health. I understand the purpose of each one, but this seems convoluted.

    - Literally the only difference between ships besides their appearance is the number of slots they have. Research looking ship will be as good at combat as Combat looking ship with the same upgrades. The same goes for multi-tools; no difference between them except their slot count.

    - All planetary hazards behave the exact same. The only thing you'll notice is a different colored bar draining on your screen.

    - If I follow a cave system and it goes for miles I need to either grenade myself out of the cave system, get lucky and find my way out, or give up and go to a previous save point. This discourages cave exploration.

    - There is basically no map system. Found something cool? Forget about it, you'll never find it again. Want to mark a trade hub so you can come back to it after gathering resources? Too bad, there's no way to place a marker.

    - Bugs. My wife has the ability to pin recipes so it tracks resource accrual towards it, but I don't. What's up with that? We're both up to date with patches. Our TVs are side by side so we know we're in the exact same menu. Also, our games have crashed probably close to a dozen times already between the two of us. Another unsavory thing I came across was the Antimatter bug. After obtaining my first unit that's supposed to get me out of my home system, I upgraded to a new ship and lost the fuel I put in my hyperdrive. As a result I had to farm, literally for hours (5+) asking every single NPC I could find to look at their inventory for Antimatter to make another unit of fuel. Sean commented on this saying that there's something in place to prevent this, but I can tell you from experience that there was no fallback. No prompts to find a new unit. Just grind city.

    - Field of view can get real ugly with the landscape morphing right before you if your'e flying around.

    - Why can I buy a ship, but can't sell my ship? I literally just buy one and give the previous one a huge middle finger as I walk away from it and throw my keys? I would think I'd get something for it, I pay good units for those things.

I don't know why he thought he could return the game at gamestop lol. I was only able to play the game AFTER hearing all the complaints. I was lucky. I got to go into it knowing it wasn't the revolutionary game most of us thought it would be before launch. But I digress. The truth of the matter is that it is a beautiful game to explore planets, space stations, and wild life. The problem I have with that is after a couple hours with the game there just wasn't much to see. Everything looks like everything else, just with minor differences. Besides collecting materials to upgrade your ship, suit and mining gun there just isn't much to do. It might be different if each item required a different process to upgrade but it doesn't. For everything you own you MUST upgrade or fix it by pointing your "mining laser" at a certain element and holding the trigger down. Its an endless loop, and unfortunately for me the endless loop is not even slightly entertaining after the first couple hours. What was I expecting though? After all, Hello Games is an indie developer with very limited money, and man power. To be honest I feel quite stupid. I believed Sean Murray. I believed in what he was trying to sell. After not hearing ANYTHING since a couple days after release I know now Sean is just another "used car salesman" trying to make a living by scamming hard working people who are passionate about video games. I don't know why I actually thought he was one of us. A person who doesn't look at video games as a silly toy for children but an art form. A canvas of artistic expression. I give this game a 5 out of 10 because the first few hours gave me a feeling I don't have the words for. The problem is, that feeling was far from everlasting. Wait until you can borrow or get for 10 or 15 bucks. With what is coming this fall, I don't think people will ever look back at No Man's Sky. Expand

It looked incredible and I decided to get it the following day. The first hour or so of the game was quite exhilarating. Starting the game on an alien planet with your ship damaged and being left to your own devices to solve the problem without being led by the hand is really tense and fun. Overcoming the first handful of hurdles in the game is the best part of the game, there is a genuine sense of danger and discovery. Unfortunately the first hour of gameplay is basically all you continue to do for the rest of the experience; fixing ship, exosuit and weapon parts by mining minerals from planets surfaces and creating items that will let you warp to the next solar system. Every planet is new in the sense that the colours are different, the conditions vary and the flora and fauna are generated randomly from a pool of variables. This is pretty cool to see initially, but you soon realise that there is just no reason for any of this. There is no real game here, only an exploration sim that lures you in with mystery. I do have to admit that the mystery is pretty enticing, but the gameplay elements of this game are extremely lazy so playing isn't exactly tons of fun. There is very little to actually do and the lack of variation is truly disappointing. The game has nice presentation for the most part; the music is fantastic, the colours, the lack of loading screens, it feels extremely vast but this comes at a price. While the planets are huge and the amount of space travel you can undertake mirrors the vastness of our actual universe, there really isn't much to see on planets apart from the rock formations and plants. You will not see anything that you haven't already seen except with variations in placement, over and over again. While the vastness is quite awe inspiring, the actual graphics aren't anything to write home about. In fact, they're quite obviously dated. Space fights are quite satisfying when you win but mostly because they're so awkwardly designed that you're surprised to even be able to pull them off. The fact that you have to recharge your ship in the inventory menu during battles through a series of navigations and clicks while combat continues unpaused is a head scratching choice. The puzzles in the game are very simple, mostly either multiple choice riddles or numeric ones. I've seen the same type of numeric riddle with exactly the same numbers three times already and it's things like this that make you question just how much forethought went into this. As a game, this fails. As a technical achievement, it succeeds to a certain extent, but once the brief initial excitement of flying from a planet into outer space has worn off there isn't much to marvel at apart from some pretty colours. It seems to me that this game is primarily trying to be an exploration simulator with philosophical undertones and it gets some things right and some things wrong, but the main issue is the lack of what's on offer to do. Exploring shouldn't be this repetitive and it shouldn't yield such a small plethora of results. The fact that this is being sold as a $60 game is cheeky. There isn't $60 worth of content here. If this game was $20 or less I might be fairly satisfied but honestly, if you have a limited budget for gaming I would definitely not spend your money on this game, I don't totally regret doing so as I really wanted to check it out as I love science fiction and mystery, but I do feel a bit cheated by the price. Then the release came, and... well, while the game delivered on certain aspects, it really lacks on others. The art style is great, but this is of course subjective. The game is fun, but it's extremely light on content. The main "pillars" that had been touted so loudly prior to the game really filter into "exploration" alone as they other items, survival, combat, trading feel "empty".

The game is very repetitive, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the actions/interactions were meaningful or impactful, but I don't feel they are.
Many items that were mentioned prior to release didn't make it into the game, e.g. faction standings, trade routes, large space combat etc.

The game could be amazing if it added these items in, because they've done a great job creating a massive universe, but currently, it just feels a little light.

I gave it a 5 because it's only half way there in my opinion. Wait for further patches or for a price drop before you buy.

An endless universe to explore with limitless possibilities. I did have a lot of fun with the game early on but it started to wear thin after several hours and upgrades later.

The cool part of the game is the ability to fly off one planet straight to another one, or warp star systems. The views on the planet are pretty awesome at first too, seeing a giant planet or two on the horizon, knowing you could just hop in your ship and fly over to it is a cool feeling. Unfortunately there is little depth to the game. You mainly go from one planet to the next, collecting resources until you have enough for what you need, then rinse and repeat. Their aren't really enough upgrades in the game to keep me wanting to take hours mining for resources. Also there aren't that many cool upgrades anyway. The worst part of this game has to be the constant crashes. I have never, ever, experienced a game crash as much as No Man's Sky. It is an embarrassment that it was released in this state. It crashed on me more than I can count, at least over 30 times. Usually it would crash if you pause the game or when the game goes to save, and often times when using the warp drive.

Although the game is huge and limitless, the planets themselves are mostly boring to be on. After about 2 mins on any given planet you have pretty much seen what it will look like for the next thousands of miles. There is no variety really on the planets themselves, just kind of a repeating pattern with minute variations to the same terrain. No plants I ever encountered were like Earth, where you have deserts, and tropical islands, and jungles. One planet has the same theme over the entirety, which really makes exploration feel boring and pointless. It really starts to just feel like a soulless experience after a while.

I am glad I played the game, I had fun with it, and I do love science fiction so that helped me enjoy it more I am sure. Overall I am glad that Hello Games took the risk and hopefully they can improve on this idea in the future. Procedural generation just can't compare to artfully created worlds, though there are times this game looks beautiful when you land on the right planet.

From the beginning this game reminded me Death Stranding because of the repetitive things (although I know they're not the same). The best of this game is the environment, sound and soundtrack. The place where you can see the things you are carrying reminds me the old free rpg games I use to play as a kid in my computer. Don't hesitate on destroying things because you'll see that you can't carry much things (destroy cheap things or things that you are not going to use or that are easy to find). The story is told as the old RPGs; I mean is more description about what's going on than dialogues. You could say this is a kind of an old rpg game but with good graphics (and a bit of action). I know I could beat the game but because is going to be more of the same with few new things I'm going to stop playing. It's not a bad game per se but in my opinion it should be shorter (and also let you carry more things when you start). If you play this game, you're going to need a few hours to settle and get used to everything. I myself thought on quitting more than once but I recommend you to play at least about 10 hours and from that point if you want to keep playing go on but that's up to you. Definitely not a game for everybody but if you want to try something new give it a try.

P.S: Also, go straight for the main story and don't do side quests unless you feel to.

While the game presents the player with a huge game environment filled with an amazing range of flora, fauna & geology the gameplay isn't as deep. I would go to say it's as shallow as the game is vast. The mechanics of space combat, resource gathering & NPC interaction are simplistic & boring.

This might be acceptable for some, but in reality it's just an intergalactic version of Minecraft. Expand

The basic idea and premise is good, the mechanics are typical of a resource scavenging game. The UI is dull and clunky, the music is largely umipressive and forgetful. After a few hours you realize the whole gameplay is grinding to improve your gear to grind some more. and that gets repetitive very fast.

Also very buggy. I had 2 crashes in the space of a 5 hour sitting.

Players may get stuck for hours on the same planet without progressing, or they might just fly through the stars by replenishing their resources at every opportunity. There's a wide variety of ways in which gamers may play the game, but at its core it's too repetitive.

Game is technically good. Gameplay is also good in general terms. What I didn't like about it is that it is not possible to crash your ship against the ground or doing an aggressive piloting over planet's surfaces; there is an invisible wall that will not let yo get close to it; For landing you just press a button and the ship just places itself gently over the ground (that´s too simple, it is a game about space exploration, let us feel like Han Solo when piloting). About crafting and surviving, I'm not very familiar with those kind of games but the system feels quite simple and works properly.

The average-low score I'm giving to the game is because you feel you're living in a lifeless galaxy. IA is very simple, NPC are passive and its interaction with them is just merely symbolic. Also it feels quite impossible to find any other player; I don't even know if there will be an online feature to allow you to interact with other players. I've been plating for 7 - 9 hours, exploring two galaxies and my gameplay can be summarized in: 1) Land in a planet, 2) find a station 3) gather materials, discover new places and scan lifeforms (if you are too aggressive against the environment then you will have to practice your aim against simple flying robots who are suppose to carry out security duties) 4) upgrade your equipment as you discover new tech and blueprint while you are exploring / farming 5) get into the ship and overfly the planet surface looking for new stations 6) repeat from 1) to 5) until you are done 7) get out of the planet and go to the space station, sell items to make money 8) repeat from 1) to 7) until you're done with that galaxy 9) get into a new galaxy and repeat. All very repetitive.

In summary, the game has a lot of potential, the procedural generation of planets and galaxies is amazing, gameplay is smooth (except for the planetary piloting. In my opinion it is too simple). The galaxy is empty, so the gameplay feels repetitive. If new updates, expansions, DLCs or whatsoever are directed to solve this, in putting some action into the game, to find living planets, with cities, villages, new races, etc, it can then become one of the best games of the decade. Now it feels like you are the only active living form in a universe of millions of galaxies, and it bores a little bit.

All of the gameplay elements are quite shallow. There is shooting, but it's not good shooting. There is space combat, but not good space combat. There are survival elements, but it's not good survival. There is crafting, but it's not good crafting. There are environments and terrain, but not good environments and terrain. There is trading, but it's not good trading. It's all very hollow and unbalanced. There is no challenge to survival, because every single planet has carbon within arm's reach. There's no challenge to trading, aside from confronting the tedium of filling your tiny space suit with gold and shlepping it back to the space station over and over.

We've seen all of these elements done vastly better elsewhere, and I wish NMS did even *one* of them well. It's pretty clear the focus was on making the needlessly huge procedurally generated universe work, and the gameplay elements seem kind of throwaway.

The big draw is the infinite worlds, and they're just not that varied. After ten or so planets, you'll be seeing virtually the same giant mushrooms and stout cactuses everywhere. The sense of discovery and abundance disappears very quickly. The caves in particular are nearly identical from planet to planet. The animals are repetitive too, mostly varying in the length and thickness of their legs. Also, seemingly every planet has life, and of course it's immediately visible when you land. It's so ubiquitous and unmysterious that the wonder is gone after seeing the first planet's creatures.

The vastness of space is nowhere to be seen. Each system is clustered together, and the jump between stars is essentially a cutscene animation. It doesn't take long before you feel like there are no more surprises or "wow" moments. Seemingly every single planet is littered with outposts, some abandoned, some not. So much for the remoteness of far-off planets.

It's definitely not terrible, and a lot of people are definitely having plenty of fun with it. I do plan to finish my playthrough. But it just seems to me (and I'm not alone) like Hello Games sacrificed everything for scale, and if the gameplay isn't that great anywhere in the universe, it doesn't really matter how big it is. Still, it is an important game in the larger scheme of things, and I'm excited to see where procedural generation goes in the future.

It took quite a while to collect and scan items but I was playing without the patch upgrade and I am so thankful for the patch which helps the inventory system slightly. My expectations of this game were a Star Trek style of game, travel to new worlds and find interesting alien life. So far only a small amount is true. Yes you can travel to new worlds, yes you find new life forms but so far the aliens in different galaxies are all the same. You walk up to them and speak... you get some gibberish alien talk text... you answer to what you think is right...you might get a gift - DONE. The rest of the time is spent scanning plants, rocks and creatures or collecting resources for fuel etc. It would have been great if you could have built colonies or have some varying alien life that you could truly interact with. I will play this for a little while longer to see if it improves (hopefully!) as it may be too early to tell what the rest of the path forward has to come. If this doesn't improve then I'm afraid I will get bored very quickly and probably trade in for another game. Don't get me wrong the game looks great and the concept is well overdue but as it stands it needed to be developed a bit more. Expand

I like others have been waiting for this game or even a game like this for a long time. Very eager to crack on and in the beginning I was taken aback at how good it is, then we skip to now only 5-6 hours in and I have lost patience and become bored with the same routines. Poor spaceflight and lack of solid interaction with the other races, the grind to expand the lack of inventory, yes I can get more slots, yes I can grind until I have a bigger ship at a cost of more grinding, endlessly mining the same minerals over and over to fly back to a space port to sell and see if I can upgrade but for what? Dont get me wrong, I enjoy this sandbox type of game, I dont require a purpose in a game Minecraft springs to mind...but it is on a different level. NMS lack of depth is becoming more and more apparent which is a massive shame as it could, with a bit more polish and a few more features be an amazing game it truly could.

It should not in my opinion have been released at this point as it is just a huge sandbox demo of what it could do and very little to do at this point. Hellogames have done a brilliant job of building this huge world but should have held this back for another year to fill it with all the features it craves or passed this massive world to someone that has the expertise to add all of the bits into it as the platform is done and is done quite well, the size is there for all to see but what isn't is everything or anything even close to what people want to do inside it.

The biggest shame of all is that it can all be sorted through months or even years of updates, but by then it will be just another amongst the other forgotten about hyped up games which could have delivered but due to pressures of deadlines and the need to rush the end and cash in, it didn't.

Many of the reviews given on this game all levitate around the same problem, repetition, and the games lack to live up to the hype based around it. My personal experience with NMS was great all the way up to when I found out how to basically do/find everything the game had to offer. I've put around 10 hours into this game and at the point that i am at, I have came to the conclusion that I am doing the same thing over and over again praying to find a better ship, multi-tool or anything to spice the game up and make it more exciting. Sean Murray continuously talked about how the game is all 100% procedural and you will never find the same creature, plant, and planet more than once in the game, but i found my self travelling to other planets and finding the same (or very similar) animals and plants. The game is also very, very, very repetitive. I'd sit there mining plutonium (one of the most common elements in the game) for 30 minutes and i'd end up using it in less than 30 seconds just so i can f*cking get off the planet. I've traveled to one galaxy, I'd meet a certain AI species (Gek, Vykeen, etc), then once i'm done exploring that galaxy I've traveled to another galaxy and found that the same species was in the new galaxy and i'd just end up leaving immediately because there is nothing new to see!

Final Verdict: No Man's Sky is a game that has a unique idea, but unfortunately, doesn't have enough content (and im not talking about the 18 Quintilian planets that you'll really only end up finding maybe 20 unique ones) to support the hype that was built around it. I personally do not enjoy games that are solely based around gaining resources over and over and over again until you've hit the point when you ask if you should really even bother with it anymore? If you enjoy games where you can explore and survive for an endless amount of time, go ahead and buy this game. If you do not enjoy having to invest a long amount of time into a game, No Man's Sky is not for you.

Also, did I mention there's no multiplayer?

The game has potential, but the limitation ruins it. Every planet looks the same, apart from the colour schemes. The whole gameplay evolves around flying your ship and spamming 'C' to scan. The menus are unclear, the textures are 10 years behind, and the overall experience fades away after 2 hours, when you see all the linearity.

It accurately captures the crushing loneliness of space by throwing you out into the universe and making you survive on planets with lethal weather conditions or atmosphere's. Visually the game is appealing. Seemingly infinite worlds are flourishing with weird and wonderful creatures. The issue i have is the quick notice of repetition. Yes you can mine various minerals and isotopes to help you survive. Yes there are different starships for you to pilot, and yes there are Quintillion's of planets. This is an issue however, as once you have done what there is to to, once you have warp jumped, once you have experienced the different types of hazardous planets and once you have seen wildlife, there really isn't anything else to do. The game lacks any objective. You find yourself warping from star system to star system, only to feel the the current one, was just like the last. The grind kicks in, and it just gets boring. You can discover Alien ruins and learn words to i think four different languages, but all they do is allow you a slightly better understanding of an npc that has no character. All NPC's are routed to the spot and just offer you dialog which if you select the right choice, rewards you with the same stuff you can find. Hooray i can explore ancient Alien ruins to allow me to learn the dialect of said alien races....only for him to give me a small upgrade to my mining tool... It's a shame as the concept of No Man's Sky is brilliant and i have a massive love of Astronomy. The issue resides with a huge game, with no fill. Randomly generated planets just generate same-ish planets that don't add much to a pointless grind. Perhaps in the future, we can get a No Man's Sky like it was hyped up to be. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *** Warning - Contains a spoiler as to what happens when you reach the centre ***

I was a massive fan of this game in the run up to release, and was a member of numerous fan forums etc. However, this game is absolutely NOT what the developer said it would be. There is a very detailed Reddit post (with sources and evidence) which outlines exactly the huge number of things that were in the previews and discussed by Hello Games in the years leading up to the release which simply are not in the game or are so overly simplistic as to be meaningless. To be clear I'm not talking about multiplayer, as Hello Games have been consistent on the fact this is not an MMO or a game you will find your friends in,

    * You can't 'side' with factions or races in the game, whether you blow up freighters or fight pirates has zero impact
    * Life does not get weirder as you get towards the centre
    * Pirates do not follow you from space to the planet surface, they turn back as soon as you enter the atmosphere
    * Planetary conditions are not influenced by the proximity to the star
    * Star type has no bearing on resources that a planet has
    * Resources are so common as to not be a challenge. Even rare resources can be found without too much trouble meaning it is easy to become super wealthy with a little grinding
    * Trading is paper thin and in no way you you realistically play the game solely as a trader
    * The idea that you'd have a crafting system like Minecraft where players have to figure out the recipes is non-existent (everything can be crafted via easily obtainable blue prints, using easily obtainable resources

These are just a few things that are missing, I would encourage people to search for the Reddit post of missing features for a full list before they buy the game so they can compare what they have seen, with what they will get.

Essentially what you are doing 2 hours into the game is exactly what you'll be doing 40 hours into the game. It is a grind of finding resources to make fuel to jump to the next system to do the same again and see some different planets. If that appeals to you then you'll love it, but be aware if you'er heading to the centre expecting weirder and wackier planets, then you will be hugely disappointed. The life you see on your first planet may easily be the most bizarre you see. You will also be hugely disappointed when you reach the centre if you're expecting some huge event, you literally arrive in a new galaxy and start all over again. Nothing more. No cut scene, nothing. Ready to begin the grind to the centre once more.

The epitomy of the phrase "a mile wide but an inch deep" and I desperately hope they plan to deliver some of the promised features further down the line. The game has so much promise but is woefully empty at the moment.

    Points to note:
The pointlessness of your continue playing dawns on you once you reach a certain point - either it's finding new planets for the sake of it or upgrading ship / suit inventory...for the sake of it, heading to the centre is no longer a desirable goal after reading what awaits you.
Gameplay is shallow and cumbersome, character movement is too slow, shooting is unrewarding and the FOV is too narrow.
Ship flying is fun until you get into space, space combat is well below average and consists of constantly turning 180 degrees to try to track the impossibly nimble enemies.
Exploration is rewarding fir the first few hours, new creatures and planetscapes are genuinely cool and awe - inspiring for the first dozen or so planets, it soon becomes obvious there isn't the variety you were hoping for.
The pop-in with the terrain is quite sever on some planets on PS4 destroying any sense of atmosphere.
The music is either quite good when it pumps up or not really noticeable, happy with the game sounds apart from the constant reminders about suit monitors.

First 20 or so hours of my playtime were full of child like amazement: The procedurally generated planets were fresh and captivating (yes, even the barren ones) and farming rocks felt almost relaxing. Even the constant whining of the on-board computer was just a minor irritation. After following the path for 20hrs I found myself grass-hopping through the cosmos just trying to minimize my actual time spent on planets. That is when the realization sank in that the sandbox was devoid of any meaningful toys. Unfortunately the game mechanics that could have given it depth are really shallow - mechanics like interaction with the alien species or space combat. All the advertised features only scratch the surface - you can be what ever you like if you have a really good imagination and you are willing to settle for less.

Space piracy? Go for it, doesn't impact anything.
Explorer diplomat? Go for it, no impact on anything really.
Trader? Go for it, market mechanics are really stale and money is abundant. Oh and you practically need money only for cargo space (new ships and suit).
Mercenary? Well if you read this far you know the drill..

The game simulates the futility of it all pretty well though. Nothing matters. You are insignificant. Crawl into a corner and feel the weight of the endless and empty universe. 60$ is a steep prize for a reality check - I play games to escape reality, not to get reality smeared to my face violently.

Well let's do this in true fashion everyone:

    Story:
It sucks. Shoot it in the face with a Super Shotgun.

    Gameplay:
It's admittedly kinda nice... if you can mine for hours and roleplay a bit, otherwise it's drab and kinda meh. It's an okay game but it's not worthy of a 60$ price tag, I got it for 20$ and I still feel like Star Wars Battlefront EA gave more content than this at launch.

    Graphics:
Kinda cool but the monsters are stupid looking, like something Nickelodeon would make. But hey some of the ships are kinda cool... I guess.

    Music:
The music has some effort, some tracks are good and others are things you'll turn the volume down because of. This game tries to have a heavy soundtrack but it just falls flat when a musical flourish hits in the middle of space, like "Whoa those are some heavy metal... rocks... ****

    Characters:
This is where a space game has to get it right, the alien species and surprise! They suck!
The aliens are generic and uninteresting or just plain ugly, nothing noteworthy here.

    The one redeeming factor?
These guys are hellbent on polishing this game and making it better, I hope in a year it'll be what we all were promised, a game worthy of praise and love, but as it stands, this game is Meh at best and Godzilla PS4 at worst.

That's all and good for a mechanic to progress in the game, but there is never anything to look forward to progressing towards. The center of the galaxy is a very abstract goal, and not one that makes the journey feel important. There is a sense of pointlessness to progressing in No Man's Sky. Every jump to a new star system feels like a fruitless task. Each upgrade you find, except for new slots to your suits inventory, feel practically useless. There is never any sense that you are actually gaining anything or doing anything of value, no matter how many credits you accumulate or ship and weapon upgrades you unlock. No Man's Sky is an INCREDIBLE game and a true achievement in gaming. It's a hallmark, it's history, it's gigantic, ambitious, glorious, miraculous in its scope. It's just NOT the game we were promised. And it pains me to admit that.

My initial reaction was... WOW, this game is incredible. But after hours and hours playing, it was clear that this game is ocean wide and puddle deep. There is just not much to do. No quest, no sidequests, not much of a lore. Just endlessly wandering around, gathering materials, trying to upgrade stuff while you juggle your inventory slots. It gets so, so incredibly boring it's a shame. Basically this is a game about mining materials, managing inventory and walking/flying around from planet to planet until you reach the ultimate goal: "the center of the galaxy".

The game just has no purpose, no point and it saddens me to say that it got old really fast. It's a shame. If they had thrown in a decent story and some sidequests to keep us moving forward, this could've been one of the greatest games ever made. As of now, it's a space-mining simulator.

The gathering element is particularly frustrating when you get involved in an entertaining dog fight and have to run away because you used up all your ammunition and need to go wander around looking for isotopes elements. Yeah, that sounds kinda simmy and so you can say it makes sense but it replaces fun with chores too much of the time, maybe more inventory slots will alleviate it but I get the feeling the resources are meant to hamstring you and won't be surprised if bigger ships with bigger inventory space will just need more of the resources to operate so your not better off.

Meeting aliens and learning a language is 'neat' and is a form of resource gathering that I do find enjoyable.

In the end this isn't really a game about exploring but about gathering resources and in that respect I get way more fun out of subnautica but if titles like 'Don't Starve' rock your boat then maybe you will probably get more than I did from this.

I am really disappointed with this game. I understood perfectly well what it is (or what rather it was advertised as) before picking it up for full price.

    What I was expecting:
    1. The game that is concentrated on exploration of amazing and exotic alien planets and star systems.
    2. Cataloguing various strange species of animals and plants. Some I would not have thought about if I haven't seen them before
    3. I was expecting unique planets, species and plants. I was expecting incredible generation engine for everything I have mentioned.
    4. Cool flying mechanic as I have always dreamed of my own spaceship

    What did I get:

    1. NMS is a really buggy game (first crash after 40 minutes of gameplay). I have played the game for about 15-20 hours on versions 1.03 and 1.04. I have encountered the total of about 7-10 crashes.

Scanning flying creatures is extremely difficult (you have to point crosshair exactly on little red dot below flying creature and it doesn't always register). You can waste up to 5-10 minutes scanning flying animal if you're unlucky.

    2. Animals and especially plants are VERY REPETITIVE. This is the worst thing you can say about a game which is sold on the premise of infinite procedurally generated universe with each planet unique. Some plants can be found on every planet. Some plants differ very, very slightly from planet to planet.

Animals are generated by attaching body parts of different animals together. For example - I have found eagle with bunny's head. These body parts are varied by size/colour/length. There are people on internet who have found exact same animals as me. I have found the same animals on several planets (or almost exactly the same animals).

This kills this game. I don't expect to be amazed by yet another planet. I see everywhere almost the same vegetation and same animals. I was expecting body parts not to be predetermined by human developers but rather be generated by math functions.

    3. Gameplay mechanics are not only boring, but also tiresome. Inventory size is the only driver in this game. Inventory management is tiresome. If construction if item A requires 4 pieces of item B, you cannot create instantly item A, but have to first create 4 pieces of item B (which never stacks).

Consider this. You start with about 10 free inventory slots. You collect some precious stuff and are left with 2 inventory slots. You find better ship which is crashed. To fix it you need to craft 4 pieces of item B and therefore 5 free inventory slots. Well, you have to throw out everything you've collected. You want to tag this place and come back later after you sell stuff? No, there's no place tagging in this game.

Surviving in this game is what takes up most of your time but it's boring and actually takes away your attention from what is important. Life support tells you that it's low on power every 25% (even at 75%, which is just stupid). You also have to recharge your mining laser and ship. It takes about half your playtime. Mining is boring. Point at rocks, pull the trigger and stop thinking.

What should be cool is finding animals. You get the biggest money rewards for cataloguing all animals on the planet and game lets you know how many more are left. And that's about it - if there's one left and you spent 3 hours on planet, there's absolutely no mechanic to help you. You're tired of this place and would like to travel to other planet but on the other hand you're one species away from big reward. It is not pleasant.

    4. Alien interactions are limited to small puzzles and knowing as many of their language's words as possible. For example, alien wants something from you and you can pick from 3 options: give him A, B or C. If you pick right, they teach you some new tech. If you pick wrong it reduces your reputation with these species. Reputation is not worth much. With high enough rep, aliens can heal you, fix your ship etc.

Most interactions with alien ruins and various stations/buildings are limited. There are 2-3 mini puzzles that are recurring. It's actually ridiculous:
    a. You see 3-4 numbers and have to guess fourth. Numbers are ALWAYS moved to the left (1234, 2341, 3412, ????) and you have to guess fourth.
    b. You see 3-4 numbers. Every next number is multiplication of previous and in each step multiplier is increased by 1 (12, 24, 72, ???)
    c. You see 3-4 numbers. Every next number is the previous one with some value subtracted. The amount subtracted is increased by 1 in each step (72, 66, 61, ???)
The funny part is - THESE PUZZLES ARE STATIC AND THERE ARE ONLY 3 TYPES. VALUES ARE REPEATED. Even such simple puzzle is not randomized and generated. After a few you memorize correct answer and don't even read them.

    5. I'm running out of character limit. I'll put it shortly - developers lied. A lot of stuff from trailers was cut. I don't even care about multiplayer, but where is that cool big ship wreckage from icy planet?

I feel cheated. YOU MESSED WITH MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS.

You know those four trailers that they made between June and August to hype us all more, and show us the four aspects of the game? Yea, a lot of stuff that is in those trailers, aren't in the actual game. yea that's right, surprise surprise, we were lied to by Hello games and Sony. That's called false advertising.

My recommendation? Stay the hell away from this game, because right now, it's not worth its asking price. It may be worth it in one year, but until then, stay away.

No Mans Sky is a great, big, colorful and fantastic canvas for a game that hasn't been painted yet. Unfortunately the reviewers who state this game is nothing more than a tech demo are sadly correct. This is a game where the limited imaginations or poor planning or ineptitude are apparent at every turn. The fact that it is ALMOST a game is disapointing and it is more akin to the recent wave of indie developed walking simulators and resource gathering snoozefests that have plagued the "indie" genre for some time now. As of writing this review there is just not all that much or that interesting do or to have taken part. The premise of No Mans Sky is brilliant and it works for moments so brief and fleeting, in between an ocean of inventory management, repetition and cosmetic palette swaps.

By far the best and most interesting parts of the game are really hidden, non existent or barely a part of No Mans Sky. Upgrades and different multi tools and ships were supposed to be meaningful and unique. Ships boil down to just a random mush of interchangeable ugly parts. Upgrades can all easily be earned without much effort or searching early in game. Landing on a gold mine planet is all too common and really hurts the early game progression system.

Some of the most awe inspiring moments were some of the most dissapointing. I had landed on a planet and realized its sun would create an eclipse in a few minutes. Standing there holding my binoculars and staring into the sky, I watched and waited. Taking screenshots of the first moments of the eclipse were amazing and awe inspiring. A double eclipse seen perhaps for the first time. Where two planets block out one star in the same place at the same time. As I waited and watched the final minutes of sunset and eclipse I watch the darkened crescented planets hover in the twilight sky realizing most everything the developers said about this game was a lie. These planets would always and forever create an eclipse here in this very spot. The planets, stationary and inanimate. These were not living breathing planets or solar systems or galaxies.. They did not truly rotate, or orbit, or have true ecologys or biomes. These stars could never truly be reached. And the house of cards and all of the walls and illusion that was No Mans Sky collapsed. All in one eclipse. For me it was a look into the heart of how a game is created and perhaps perception itself. For all the things that should be learned from this game is that the reality is only real to the unaware perciever of the illusion. And perhaps reality itself just an illusion, like the word "game" in space game.

No Mans Sky truly has a few unreplicable moments and grand moments. These moments unfortunately allow you to see the infinite walls for what they truly are, barriers.

+ Truly unique and almost perfect spacecraft flight.
    + True Open world.
    + Moments of awe

-Very limited crafting and upgrading systems
-Almost nothing to do but sightsee.
-No real cutscenes other than the endgame cutscene or real story mode.
-No variety in planet types (No ringed planets, no biomes, no gas planets, no planetary or cosmic phenomena other than black holes which are almost useless most of the time.)

What happened to the game we were expecting? Well, nothing... It was just all about the money! Mr. Murray has misled gamers and created expectations of a game that never matched the product in the making. The end product is a mere husk of his very "vivid" descriptions. Wake up, wipe that grin from your face and stop talking bullsh... Fix this mess of a game and deliver the product you promised.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this game has lied to me in all those trailers and info that they gave me. They said you can travel to 18 billion planets or something but what they didn't tell us is that its 18 billion copies. When i enter a new system i feel like i just went around in a circle and ended up in the same area, every system contains the same old same, just a few planets a space station and some other things. Its just very boring, i don't mind grinding in a game but when i feel like there is no reward or purpose to grind for its just a waste of time. I feel like this is absolutely not worth 60 bucks. I think people with a lot of imagination might find some fun in it but for me its just not at all what i hoped for. The game also does not explain anything in the beginning so you basically don't have any idea what it is u gotta do. After 20 hours you're doing exactly the same as in the first hour and probably at the end of the game u pretty much have been doing the same all the time. The planets don't feel different at all, some planets might be a bit different but the only thing that is different is the colours and some animals. I probably won't be playing this game anymore because it just feels like a waste of time. Overall i think people that expect a huge game with all kinds of different worlds are going to be disappointed. Expand

It's boring, repetitive, and has crashed on me at least 10 times. And the worst part is it's priced at a full AAA release of $60. DO NOT waste your money on this game.

I've heard people say it's a "make your own fun" sort of game, a la Minecraft before Notch decided to tack on an endgame. However for there to be emergent gameplay one must first have a broad pallet of game mechanics to play with. This is exactly where No mans Sky falls down, there is very little to do and very little variety in how you do it. If you could clip along at mach 3 blasting space dinosaurs, or carve your name into the side of a mountain I can guarantee this game would not be getting bad reviews.

What is there plods along at a snails pace, walking feels like crawling, sprinting feels like walking and even the bad-ass stiletto hulled space-ripper ships amble through the atmosphere as if they were pleasure craft. There are a host of other things that one would thing should never have made it out of beta, ruins are less useful than knowledge stones. One of the atlas path goals requires that you spend hours documenting every living thing on whatever planet you happen to be on, the puzzles are kindergarten grade easy, and every single alien encounter plays out in exactly the same way. The sound design (which I have seen others laud) consists of generic muzak, overlaid with random animal cries and mechanical nonsense that has no bearing on whats going on around you.

I can forgive Hello Games, they are an indie studio with indie budgets and indie mindsets. What I'm less inclined to forgive (and we as gamers are as much to blame for this) is having them dragged out twice at E3, hyping this thing into the AAA it isn't, and me traveling round 3 different retail outlets to find a boxed copy for £40. This thing ought to have been £15 digital only, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this gets pushed out onto PS plus as a freebie in the next 12 months.

With no real story, borderline nonexistent multiplayer, and a baffling lack of player implemented creativity (i.e. structures/bases, ship designs, and character designs) I found myself struggling to maintain the willpower to discover. Even though a bit of my journey was exciting and immersive in and of itself, my entertainment was exceptionally temporary as the looming realization of stagnant progress encroached evermore on my fleeting happiness.

    Further still:
-There are several mechanical bugs/glitches, render distance/pop-in issues, texture and clipping bugs, screen tearing, frame drops, UI and AI problems, and audio glitches
    -Frequent game crashes
-Game saves can occasionally fail to load/do not load properly
    -Unstable 30fps
-Simple RNG, even at the beginning, weighs too heavily on game difficulty (balancing issues)
-Cannot change (a remarkably zoomed) FOV, and options in general are fairly limited
    -Text “puzzles” are excessively easy
    - Inventory space is bizarrely small (and ease of management could be improved)
-Combat (in space and on the ground) is exceedingly awkward- as are the controls in general
-Planet, alien race/monster, structure, and ship designs too quickly exhibit their “copy and paste” similarities (perhaps inspect/change how planets in proximity are generated or add further biomes/textures/structures/races, etc.)
-Proper trading (with price forecasting per location) is contradicted by procedural generation (which further conflicts with inventory management)
-Interactions with aliens is simple, repetitive, and often completely trivial
-Indications of player taking any damage too closely resembles typical indications of player taking fatal damage
-Weather phenomenon is sometimes an underwhelming spectacle
    - And many, many more issues

I personally would not value the game at $60, even with the proposal of future updates (most notably base building). I would recommend waiting until the price drops (by at least 50%), and several patches iron out the more detrimental bugs. To really determine whether or not my criticisms would be sufficiently reflected in others, however, I’d encourage one to watch streams or pure gameplay footage (as opposed to tailored marketing videos/trailers). Surely, I would expect some to find this experience much more enjoyable and valuable than I have.

    1. Is it worth the $60US price tag that would normally come with a AAA game?
    2. 6 hours into the game, do I feel like I have experienced diversity, a repeated sense of wonder and a drive to do more to achieve goals?
    3. Is the feeling of immersion unbroken?

In answer to all three of these questions I would have to say no. $60 is FAR too much for a game in such a state. If I pay AAA prices the I expect a finish to the overall product that doesn't leave me wondering what could've been nor what the time frames for fixing it look like. Not only does it have an overwhelming feeling of rinse/repeat but since I discovered the simple process of harvesting Vortex Cubes I have now achieved the goal of a large ship so now what? The 'story' is so thin that there is no sense of achievement in following it beyond it being some direction. Interaction with aliens is so superficial that learning their language is a waste of time. In fact the only reason why I enjoyed monoliths was for the break in the tedium of flying around trying to find extra nodes to learn words. Finally the buggyness and sloppy feeling of flying has left me feeling like immersion is almost non-existent. You just start getting into it and then it starts chopping up. You approach a base and engage landing and it lands you next to a platform not on it!!!

Frankly I'm not interesting in what it could be, I expect that paying AAA prices means that I'm buying what it is, and what it is, is a $15 game at best and that's what I'd pay. However I would consider paying more for expansions and not feel ripped off. Right now though it's not a great experience and far too repetitive

In one word; shallow. Fun for an hour or two, then it's the same tedious mechanics over and over and over again.

I mean sure, exploring at first is great but the procedural generation just grows boring. I get it's meant to be unique but this seems closer to a barebones tech demo than a finished product.

In NMS everything is "awesome" - which makes nothing awesome.

There is life everywhere. Cargo crates everywhere. "Rad" things to see everywhere. Space stations everywhere. And if there is stuff everywhere, stuff is not going to matter. Your experience of finding stuff will bomb within 20 minutes time.

The thing is - NMS has all the modules, all the code and all the design there to create a wonderful and deep planetary exploration experience. But it is not put together in any fantastic and thoughtful fashion - rather it is put together in the most "meh" of ways.

    Sad.

    Pro :
    - Endless Universe to explore
    - Immersive Environment and just something new

    Cons :
    - Lack of Content (The game is about 2.5gb big as download file which doesn't change once installed - so you find out quite fast that this Game really doesn't offer that much of a variety.
    - Aliens look similar
    - After 5 hours you saw almost all ships you can get/buy, they only differ in upgrades, style and price
    - The "uploading" feature doesn't do anything besides give you credits. If you deny firewall access to this Game you can upload everything again after restarting the Game. It doesn't really upload anything, they could've named it "claim for discover" rather than upload.
    - Graphics are just terrible, just take a look at the ground it looks like someone threw up on the ground and was too lazy to clean it up
    - Plants, Rocks, Planets itself look almost same, just color difference
    - Biggest problem : Inventory size, you find yourself collecting stuff from loot boxes, yeah and then surprise they don't stack. You ship is full in the first 20min, so is your suit inventory. I found myself running around for like almost an hour before i could fix my starter ship to get off the planet.
    - The handling of the ship is terrible, you dont really want to use a and d otherwise you find yourself spinning like crazy.
    - Running feels like walking, walking feels like slow motion
-You can't even use the word "optimized" because it is just not. It's 30 fps capped upon first launch with low settings along side. I got a pretty decent pc and i face freezes, fps issues and bugged textures all over the place.

So in comparison this Game looks to me like an unfinished Tech preview of the Game. If you play it for like 2 hours you will ask yourself - "is that really it". This Game is just not finally done, but sadly it is. You can even harvest plants. You must shoot everything with your lazer which overheats like an cpu without cooling.

Full price worth? No definitely not, not even half price is worth. 15-25€ seems okay but still not fair for an 2016 Game which was hyped so hard.

Wait for an price cut, or get a pirated version since this Game (and the whole development) doesn't deserve this money. They first advertised this Game as mmo-based multiplayer which got played down and finally simply just edited in steam as "singleplayer".

Please, i hope they don't ever create a Game again.

Not that you can do that. That would be too interesting.

After all the hype, all the promises, all the boasting of procedurally generated wonder and dynamic encounters, Hello Games’ “ambitious” spacefaring game is little more than just another crafting and survival experience, more about performing mundane, repetitive tasks than providing unique and exciting encounters.

If you’re not sick of the hundreds of survival games out there already then No Man’s Sky, with its endless resource collection and irritating inventory management, might be for you.

For anybody else, the allure of hopping from planet to planet just isn’t all that intriguing – once you’ve completed a long and dull journey from one world to another, you’re going to touch down and basically do what you did everywhere else.

    02

The game’s biggest feature – that no one planet is the same – means very little when your interactions on each one are practically identical.

Yes, there are dry planets, watery planets, cold planets, stormy planets – but they all adhere to the same simple rules. The major difference between a poison planet and a nuclear planet is the fact you’ll get a different logo next to the timer that tells you how long you can stay outside.

The animals, mixed and matched quite obviously from a pool of recycled body parts, can be fed to uncover rare materials, but you can’t do much beyond that. Aside from the few that are hostile and prone to attack, the animals are just there to look weird.

Upon encountering a large, dinosaur-like creature, I proceeded to use my **** jetpack (and boy is it ****) to ride on its back. I thought that would be fun. Instead, I just fell through its back because it had no solidity, leaving me to sigh and return to yet more mind-numbing resource collection.

My disappointing experience with the dinosaur has come to exemplify No Man’s Sky‘s biggest problem – everything is so obviously faked, so unabashedly illusory. The universe is devoid of credible, tangible life. For as much as the game promises dynamic adventures, everything is scripted, static, held in place like cardboard cutouts in a fairground ride.

Sentient aliens met along the way are never found just wandering the land. They remain stood or sat in place like static quest givers in an MMO – without the quests. Every now and then, other starships land nearby, but nothing ever gets out of them. To interact with their pilots, you must interact with the ship, at which point a character model pops up and you can have a text-based conversation with a pop-up character model.

The world of an average Elder Scrolls game may be far smaller than No Man’s Sky‘s galactic sprawl, but it’s inherently more meaningful, vivid, and lively, because it actually has stuff to do and people to meet.

    03

No Man’s Sky is indicative of a big problem the games industry has – conflating the size of a game’s world with the quality of its character. It’s yet another game that pushes scale above everything else, but when it comes down to actually playing the thing, sheer landmass doesn’t account for much.

I simply do not care that I can explore a universe when that universe contains animals a mere window dressing, lifeforms that stand affixed to one spot, abridged visual novel confrontations, and an endless need to shoot rocks and trees to continue micromanaging every banal detail of my character.

The endless collection of resources needed to refill multiple fuel sources is a total drag, but it’s really the best bit of substance the game has to offer. An incessant journey from planet to planet, zapping carbon and iron out of plants and stones so you can journey to more planets in order to zap more plants and stones.

This constant feeling of chasing one’s own tail for the sheer sake of it is found in many survival games, and it’s just as prevalent here. Everything is a chore, everything needs some special sort of fuel source, and there’s not enough room to carry it all. You start out slow, unable to sprint for long, with a terrible jetpack for a modicum of enhanced travel.

One’s abilities can have upgrades crafted for them, but upgrades share the same restricted inventory space as everything else, meaning you need to choose between being able to sprint for an acceptable amount of time or being able to carry more things. This becomes less of a problem when you buy bigger starships to carry more loot, but it remains an annoyance and it makes the early game an uphill battle against crushing ennui.

    04

Breaking up the “enjoyment” of filling your tiny (if slowly expandable) inventory with materials are frequent attacks from Sentinels – robotic annoyances that seem to be everywhere and further drive home the uniformity of this allegedly varied universe.

This game as a software is revolutionary but as a game is too simple and boring, If you like computer software is a good software for a algorithms study. Some problems and bugs is like a student Project.

    Sorry Hello Games

NMS does has its moments; the seamless transitions when travelling between planets, occasional beautiful vista and procedurally-generated creatures can lead to some rather profound experiences early-on. For me, the magic wore off pretty quickly; I began to dread landing on planets just to chase after resource icons and hoover-up rocks. Perhaps if Hello Games adds some of the features they talked about during development that didn't make the final cut, this game will have the content needed to stand on its own. As it stands, NMS' universe is a dreadfully boring place.

The most dissapointing videogame I've ever played... Seriously... It is only selling a lot because of all the 'free' advertising that is receiving from so many online magazines.

The game turns out boring and repetitive after 4 hours.

    Great potential, worse execution.

Just another overhyped game as usual. It's unfortunate, because I really wanted to like this game, but I just got so bored after a few hours. When 95 percent of the gameplay is resource collecting...well, the game is just flat out boring. The whole procedurally generated environments and such is both good and bad. I mean, if you're lucky, you could end up on some really cool planets and see some cool animals and stuff, but then maybe you'll just get a bunch of boring planets like I did, with nothing cool half the time, which made the game for me stale and empty. The fact that this game had no story, just a general objective of trying to reach the center of the universe, which could take who knows how long, was a turn-off for me as well. Maybe if the journey getting there was a little more exciting, then I would see this game differently. I'm not trying to be so pessimistic, but I think we were all promised something that we never actually got. In my opinion, this game is not worth your $60. Expand

Updated review: this game is endless in the way a hamster wheel is endless.

You can repeat the same mindless loop of activity without end, but you won't see anything new. Planets are all very similar with infinitely repeating geological patterns. You can repeat the same mindless loop of activity without end, but you won't see anything new. Planets are all very similar with infinitely repeating geological patterns.

Fly over a planet and watch repetition of the same hill/cave/crater, next to the same clearing/pond/crevice, and then the same building you've seen on the past 10 planets.

Off-planet, space is exactly the same in every system.

The animals rarely change significantly from one planet to the next. I've seen the same birds and same jellyfish looking thing on almost every planet.

The buildings are all copy-paste from one plane to the next.

    And that's the entire game.

Exploration implies, in my mind, the hope of finding something notable that nobody else has seen. That's why running in a hamster wheel isn't exploring, and flying from one plane to the next in this game doesn't feel like exploring.

If you don't want to run in the hamster wheel, there's nothing else to do.

I never would have bought this game if there was truthful advertising.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
