I cannot stress how bad this game is. It truly is unbelievable. This is the gaming equivalent to a political scandal. They sold us tonnes of lies, got our hopes up and delivered nothing that they promised they would

Hello Games should be called Goodbye Games because this should be the last time they are allowed to make games.

This game retails for £45, and that's just for the basic release. Imagine all the poor sods who forked out on special editions.

I am surprised that people are not demanding their money back for this joke of a game. And guess what happens at the end of the game? Nothing. That's right. Absolutely nothing. I am not kidding. The aim of the game is to get to the center of the galaxy and when you get there nothing happens.

DO NOT BUT THIS GAME! Wait until its free on PS Plus or give it another week and if you know anyone that has it I guarantee they will be more than happy to get rid of it. They may even pay you to take it from them.

Shooting mechanism are bad/boring. Why bother resource gathering when resources are everywhere and abundant. With the latest patch downloaded to my ps4 the game crashed 3 times. You cannot fly into the sun so all the talk about real physics of planet rotation etc was wrong. For the development team I think they could fix the game and make it enjoyable by 1. Making resources hard to get/less abundant and survival more difficult 2. Making flight mechanics real with total player control in flight and in landing and 3. Have proper enemies defending some areas and include real physics and different gravity on planets and moons. The one mark out of ten was for some of the art direction as some of the atlus buildings are impressive when you first enter them. Expand

All the planets are the same. All of them. sure, one has aluminum and the other has gold and by golly this one has omegon! but its the same thing over and over and over again. You will get bored of it in roughly 5 hours. The combat systems boring, there's only 3 races of alien, and that's it. But what about a few positives? Well, the graphics are fantastic, and there's over 14 quintilian planets (even though they're all unfathomably similar) and thats it. Nice graphics and many planets. The game is worth the $20 price point suggested by quite a few people but unless there are some earth shattering updates announced, and soon, I may just throw my hat in with those screaming fraud.

I still contend concept art seen in pre-release trailers do not raise to the level of "promised features that never manifested" and none of my disappointment for the game has to do with that oddly contemptuous online debate.

I also don't think the game is in anyway improved by adding hyper realistic planetary physics, the ability to spend uncounted hours slowly crawling from one star to another, the ability to fly into the suns of the different galaxies found, or the lack of in your face baked in multiplayer capabilities as in nearly every discussion of this game pre-release it was driven home pretty hard the experience would be a solitary one that only occasionally saw you stumble across another player.

    What changed my mind from rabid fan boy to disgruntled whiner is as follows;

The game is boring because of how little "procedurally generated content" actually manifests. In a game with no other plot points, story lines, or objectives this was the games only real hook or selling point so to find this concept is only robustly applied to an extremely small set of game details is a major let down.

The phrase "procedurally generated" is used with such a loose relationship to the actual definition of both words it's easy to see why people feel swindled.

The animals you're able to discover all share the same dozen or so basic body types with probably two dozen or more different appendages that just get randomly swapped around but even then only to a certain degree and the flora, ships, NPC alien races, colonial outposts, monoliths, ruins, and plaques all suffer the same problem.

Until it's pointed out the lack of flowing water, sand, or other obviously missing planetary features at first seem to be part of the randomly generated magic of exploration until you discover it's just not present anywhere in the game.

It's at first very hard to upgrade weapons, suit, and ship but then incredibly easy until you discover in an "infinite" universe you've essentially become nigh invincible which is fun but only if there's a reason to wield those abilities and sadly, there's really not, save for the occasional easy to beat NPC pirate ships.

You are constantly being attacked by pirates in space but never see evidence of them in the games otherwise non-existent story line despite constantly running into the same three alien races.

There are many beautiful details that could, and hopefully someday will, lead to rich story lines and sub plots that entice at first only to abruptly cease to serve any point or have any relevance when you discover they're just more repetitive aspects to a planet you will see varied slightly the next time you touch down.

    That's about it.

I would give this game a ten out of ten if there were any small indicators from Hello Games major content patches were even just being planned with tentative dates but the absolute silence from them since the beginning of September, when bug squashing patches were being released almost weekly with zero patch notes, leads me to believe the furious backlash from the gaming community has forced Sony to demand the bug squashing patches but otherwise shutter the entire foray into this game and its creators in an attempt to save face and minimize financial blow back.

You regularly come across some amazing vistas in this game, so, yes HG, we'll let you off with that one.
    Now gameplay.
To say this is a missed opportunity is a massive understatement.
    Let's start with the NPCs.
They sit, they move their heads and they make gestures. That's it. You never see them anywhere else. Not wandering around like you, not even shambling to another room.
Apart from interactions in the hut or space station they are glued to, their offerings create no tension and have no ramifications anywhere in the game. Pointless.
When your 'reputation' is increased via these encounters, it means nothing. If I'm favourable with one, the other does not try to gun me down in space (not that it's ever really made clear WHO is trying to do that anyway).
    Money. Useless.
The end game for this might be better ships or tech. The game gives the tech away, you can't buy it, only materials. the ships may look quite different, but none really offer anything approaching different capabilities.
So, you find a ship eventually that looks nice, has enough space, and that's that. No reason to change.
I could go on and on.
No missions, no tension, alien bases EVERYWHERE. Recycled noises, animals, plants, planets. No territorial issues in the local or galactic maps.
it's essentially an interactive screen-saver tech demo.

I hear HG games have announced "base building".
Why would I need to build a base when every single planet has millions of shelters on, and the galactic map is so unfriendly towards tracking destinations, or POI's or anything else.

    Very poor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NMS feels like a cheap early access survival game rushed out and made on a small budget...except it was released as a final product for $60 after three years, two delays and with the backing of a major publisher...oh dear.

The two big selling points of NMS were the sheer number of randomly generated planets and the sense of exploration and discovery of a practically infinite number of worlds. The problem is while buzz words like "procedurally generated" sounds good on paper, the reality of that means everything looks and acts practically the same. There was not one memorable thing about any of the planets I visited or reason to ever go back. They all have the same generic resources, mined from the same generic nods, scattered about the same generic wastelands. You can't build any structures or settle down on a particular planet, only adding to the disposable and forgettable nature of them.

Perhaps not having the "ending" spoiled might have provided some sense of drive or purpose for me to keep playing, however I'd rather know there wasn't going to be a payoff to save myself the time and frustration. Some say the reward is in the journey and not the destination, but this is simply not a journey worth taking in my opinion. I went into this with low expectations after hearing all the controversy and even then I found it interminably dull and underwhelming.

Judging the game by itself I probably would have given it a 4 at best, however I feel it would be remiss not to take the marketing and PR debacle into account. I didn't pay much attention to the game leading up to release, but looking back now at all the documented interviews and demonstrations for the game, I simply cannot see it as anything but misleading at best if not outright lying at worst. Regardless of intention or malice Sean Murray/Hello Games should be held accountable for their actions along with Sony for allowing things to get out of control if not outright encouraging it.

I give No Man's Sky a 0/10 for being a boring, sub-par game and completely unacceptable business practices on the part of both the developer and publisher.

(full disclosure: mine was a rental copy, played for three hours straight before calling it quits due to myself and everyone watching being put to sleep)

The game can be fun for awhill for the most casual of gamer, but who exactly is Hello Games targeting on PS4 the console that has mostly modern and hardcore gamers? those types of players dont want a casual "relaxing" space sim they want a game that is rewarding and gives that feeling off accomplishment after you complete something difficult, NMS doesnt give that feeling at anytime in the game and it really just feels like you are wasting your time most of the time in the game with no payoff in sight, NMS needs alot of patches before the $60 pricetag can be justified

Besides the planet exploration mechanics which are poor, it also lacks a sufficient enough story that might give meaning to this quintillion planet filled universe. Besides that, the feeling of being the first explorer lost in some world is lost as robots have gone everywhere before you have! So it makes no sense for you to rename the planet if robots have been there before. Finally, the stagnant npcs lack a lot of character, and while pretty to look at could use a lot of improvements. So far I have only played the PS4 version and I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the graphics, especially as it looks smudgy and the fps is poor. Procedurally generated environment (with trademarked super algorithm by Sean) is a very limited pool of models mixed together and repainted with random color. Animals look stupid, planets look the same. There are no ice giants, no gas giants, you can't crash into a planet, you can't fly into a star and burn because system's stars are just sprites and not game objects. I don't know how people fell for this "billions of variations" meme.

There are so many features that are missing that we were explicitly told were in the game.
Performance is awful, there is no depth at all. Controls are horrible, User interface is the most awkward and badly designed one to date.
It's pretty incredible how a dev can straight up lie about their game with no repercussions.

Some people say this is a great game, others say it's a boring game, and they're wrong. This is *not* a game. It's an interactive slideshow. A boring one at that. For a console with only one configuration, this is unacceptable, for a PC it would be OK. Even after the second patch, same thing. Maybe they were coding the PS4 version for the newer model coming out and forgot to check for bugs in the original configuration. The newest patch fixed the save issues (although now it saves the game under both save game slots) and it still crashes. On top of that there are still bugs that are common and annoying and have been talked about for days. The game play is not really an issue, although I just gave up because I am not close to the center and have maxed out on everything long ago. It is worth a 2 week rental or PS+ giveaway. Expand

If I had to sum up everything in just one line it would be this: "You are thrown into an infinitely expansive and beautiful universe only to find yourself utterly alone, doomed to never sharing the vistas with anyone."

A shorter one-liner would be: "A huge environment with very little content." Here's the breakdown: Pros: - An incomprehensibly large universe to explore.

A shorter one-liner would be: "A huge environment with very little content."

    Here's the breakdown:

    Pros:
    - An incomprehensibly large universe to explore.
-Beautiful sights on some planets and in space.
    -Ships are fun to fly.
    -Naming new discoveries is fun.

    Cons:
-Resource gathering and jumping from planet to planet gets old after just a few hours.
-The quest to get to the center of the galaxy feels like a chore.
-Despite initial impressions, game-play is quite basic and shallow.
-Survival elements are more annoying than they are engaging.
-Many planets are very similar to one another with just different color schemes and textures - no doubt the result of procedural generation of content. The same can be said of the many creatures you encounter.
-The loneliness in a game this huge is unbearable. Having some form of multiplayer such as PvP (dog fighting) or maybe multi-crewed ships and landing parties would go a long, long way to keeping interest.
-There is no incentive to getting a better ship because when you do, you loose EVERYTHING from your old ship including warp fuel and cargo!
-You are only allowed to have one ship.
-I've encountered a few game breaking bugs including falling through the ground on two different planets.

I was so pumped for this game and unfortunately I feel let down. I had boasted that this would be the game to beat this year and that I'd finally have something else to dump a ton of hours into outside of WoW. I think after a mere 9 hours of game-play, though, I'm done. Hopefully the devs can add more content and more things to do in the future. If/when that happens I'd be happy to re-evaluate and change my score!

    - No Multiplayer interaction (Yes it was promised that you could technically run into another player but almost impossible due to the scale) Devs are deceptive **** and only came clean about it just before launch.
    - More of a failed tech demo than a game.

TLDR was a snore fest. hopefully the Developers will add some actual story or factions cities/fleets/politics, and multiplayer are the only thing that could make this game fun for anyone, other than the hold out fanboys and the **** posting copy and pasted fake reviews with 10/10

That's not to say that No Man's Sky has no unique features of its own... the ability to fly through various solar systems documenting various plants and animals does have an almost exploratory feel. However, the worlds and terrain quickly become noticeably formulaic... often lacking real differentiation from worlds already visited. The slight cosmetic changes do little to add depth to what is largely a fairly lackluster game.

The gameplay is a bit worse off in being formulaic... and there's precious little actual gameplay variety. Almost everything is geared toward gathering resources to upgrade technology, and repeat the cycle.

While that style of gameplay isn't necessarily bad, it’s certainly not worth the $60 price tag attached to the game... even with the nebulous promises of expanded gameplay.

In essence, SOE and Hello Games expect this $60 dollar game to be embraced in similar vein to early-access games... hoping that an already rocky launch will be overlooked, and potential customers will salivate at what might be, rather than what is.

Ultimately, it's the price tag the heavily brings down this game's score. It should have been priced more consistently with other early-access games... say $20 - $30 could be reasonable for a game that is, by all appearances, incomplete.

In my opinion the developer built up the hype so that players will buy the game as a premium one and not an unfinished indie that worth 20$ tops. But then you realize that you will do the same three things for the rest of the game, so probably for 50 - 100 hrs: Gather minerals, recharge your equipment, fly to the next planet that is shockingly similar to the planet you just visited. The lack of variety is ridiculous given the fact that everything is based on procedural generation. Most of the planets are lifeless pieces of rock. Maybe this is something that you can live with because sometimes there are these "wow" moments, when you finally find a planet with a lot of flora and fauna.
Based on these impressions I could rate this 5/10 being an average space exploration game for casual players. BUT: The game was announced with misleading information. This is a fraud. This is criminal activity. There are so many features missing from the game that were originally promised. The whole experience is based on lies that came directly from the developers. I understand that one or two features might be missing from a game when it launches, because time was short, but this game is basically missing everything that was promised. The only feature it delivers is the repetitive mining. That's it. You even get bored by exploration. Also you don't have any motivation anymore to find other players because you WON'T SEE THEM. As a fact the developers said that you will be able to see other players. Not even 24 hours later this was already proven false. Two players stood at the exact same spot and were NOT able to see each other. I will now try to get my money back from Gamestop. This is the biggest disappointment since I started my gaming career in 1992.

Absolute piece of crap. This guy spins lies like he's Peter Molyneux jr. I had a lot of faith in this game and what it could be but it really is not what they said it would be in the years leading up to its release. Avoid.

Runs badly, little real good content, the procedural stuff itself isn't great and its single player through and through.

It's a pathetic game, nothing more to say. In the end is a bad game about explore a lot of planets without any interest. And it's important to remember that NO HAVE ON LINE MODE, They sell a game about the universe and find others players and there's no way you can do it, they lied and that deserves a 0 out of 10.

a glorified walking simulator on planets with some space flying that is just as boring as the walking simulator. this game should have been $20 at best but no they want a full price of $60 for this early access garbage.

Misleading marketing and outright lies by the developers and publishers leading up to release built up expectations for a game that doesn't exist. No Man's Sky is a bugfest of titanic proportions. The gameplay is fractured and repetitive, with a play loop that gets boring within an hour. Despite all of this the game costs 60 dollars. DO NOT BUY!

Deeply disappointing boring game. Another confirmation that there is an inverse relationship between the longer the hype before release the worse the game will be. Avoid.

Boring. Bland. Look but dont touch world. Everything looks the same. Delivers much less then it promises. I am so disappointed and I was so forwardlooking for this game. Still I feel sorry for the developers who put so much effort into it. It is a technical achievement for sure, but not a videogame.

You can't build, You cannot change anything in the game. It feels like a game in development that will never be finished. Less to do than Space Engineers but a higher price. Wait for this to his 20 dollars or less. Not worth 60 dollars. A complete let down. Sean Murray changed his stance and now additions will cost money as well. I feel like I fell for a Peter Molyneux lie hook line and sinker.

    Release was terrible,gameplay is boring
It's the size of a ocean but as deep as a puddle
Is not worth 60 dollars for a game that is smaller then minecraft, and I can buy that for 20 dollars.

The game is boring and space combat mechanics is terrible, fight in planet orbit is impossible due movement restraint in low altitude.

Worst game of the year, the best part was the uninstall

Came back here to change my review of an 8 to a 0. I'm getting more and more disenchanted with how this game has turned out. The nail on the head was me trying to warp along a preset path by the game to reach Atlas. Four times I have tried to warp and four times it has crashed! I finally just contacted Sony for a refund. FYI, these crashes happened both before AND after the latest update.

    No multiplayer.
    No mountains.
    No deep caves.
    No deep sea exploration.
    No forests.
    No customizable FOV.
    No challenge.
    No interesting NPC.
    No story.
    No ending.

It might be a decent game if every planet was different from each other, but when you arrive to a planet you can see the same stuffs you have seen before.

The game does not live up to the hype......Not even close. The game is very buggy, the various wildlife lack diversity, the game lacks personality, the FOV is **** the GP is **** AI suffers from severe clipping and derpiness, the concept is cool but it lacks variety....you collect the same **** and do the same **** over and over and over and over.

Every reason i hate modern open world games magnified to infinity. The only things you will do in this game are loot - inventory management - glorified loading screens - repeat.

Repetitive gameplay, cartoonish graphics, sub 30fps poor performance , texture pop in, stuttering and screen tearing. I would happily forgive the boring gameplay if No Man's Sky's frame rate was solid or higher without the above mentioned issues.

This is one of the most boring games I've played this generation. Even Homefront the Revolution is better with the patches and no I'm no trolling. Travel to random planets, explore, repeat. No sense of progression or actual story line. Can't wait to see the reviews from critics for this 1.

1). Tech demo impressive feat but is it actually fun to play? For me that's a no.
2). Pain in the backside resource juggling due to tiny inventory size!
3). Planets lack any real variety, same POIs on each one, creatures look very similar. 4). Full priced release! Should have been £20 tops imho on ps store. 5). Absolutely atrocious texture load-in. 6). Much better crafting/survival

In summary sounded like a great idea at the design stage and I must admit I was excited for it for a long time but the proof is in the pudding and I feel there isn't much of a game in there tbh.

This game's marketing captured a lot of people's imagination for years. It was pushed as a vast, deep, diverse, dynamic game with lots of surprises. The exact opposite is the truth. Play through the first planet then stop because every planet you go to from there will give you the exact same experience and nothing new to do. The game is empty, lacks substance, and relies heavily on its visuals even though the procedural generation leads to Spore-tier fauna and same-y environments.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
