If you are looking for a modern space-faring game to replace your freelancer feels from the past.

    This isn't it.

Huge premise, but ultimately dull, bland, boring, uninspiring, and not good.

The most difficult thing about NMS is inventory control, but once you have upgraded yourself, which is a boring chore, there is nothing about this game that is interesting.

I was sooo looking forward to playing this game and I was just so excited when I finally got to try it out. Initially it looks really good, but it's all a bit pointless and directionless. Some of it looks very nice, but the numerous glitches don't help either. Elite Dangerous is probably the best way to go if you want a huge and immersive space universe to explore.

I'm very glad that Hello Games has stuck by this game and improved it so much. But they will never, and should never, live down the false advertising that resulted in people like me paying $60 for a game that was years away from having all the promised features.

Upgrading your multitool, ship and Exo Suit follows well-known gameplay mechanics and motivated me to continue. The only frustrating factor, the very limited inventory, soon was eliminated when I discovered those escape pods which grant you another slot for a bargain. The farming/grinding concept worked pretty well, learning alien languages was interesting and the game was fun. BUT soon there isn´t anything special to explore anymore, every new planets with all its content kinda looks and feels just like the ones before. There is no specific mission, no quest, no story, no immersion left. I see no reason to continue my travel to the center of the galaxy, why should I? I really, really wanted to love this game because it has so much potential. It´s unfinished. It´s at 60$/60€ which is ridiculous! Do not buy it in this state, it´s not worth the money. I will wait for some HUGE patches, maybe some passionate community mod to bring necessary content to this game. I will wait for the price to fall to a normal amount (20$ or less!) before giving it another shot. Expand

Played it at launch. Like all others, I soon realized that there is almost nothing to the game compared to what was promised. It gets boring and repetitive fast, and everything in the game just starts to look the same. Yes, there is now more content, but the game does not feel improved and the core experience remains the same as it was. Too little, too late & it was not enough to motivate me to play more after the extended break. If anything, it now reminds me of an early access game that never gets finished. This sort of mess belongs on Steam Early Access. I hope this is not a sign of things to come for the PS4. This sort of practice does not belong in the AAA title section at full price at launch. Rather poor, lazy and generic survival elements covered up by shallow and boring exploration. The game certainly is pretty when you're ignoring the various graphical bugs. But aside from gorgeous music and selectively gorgeous visuals, the game doesn't have much to offer.

Your super limited inventory space (even after upgrades) makes exploration a chore that you simply can't partake in as you'll have almost no inventory space to spare when you factor in upgrades and resources for just maintaining your redundant hazard and life support meters. Your best hope while exploring is finding some super boring wildlife that simply runs away when you get near it, or looking at plants that look like slightly different than real world counterparts (trees, cacti etc.). Its also not very fun discovering planets, wildlife or plants when you have no one to show off too or share your 500th meaningless discovery with. Discovering things doesn't feel fun, isn't rewarding or worthwhile, so why bother exploring?

What about survival elements? Well you have a health bar that refuses to empty (read: its impossible to die this game is so easy) and lazy, generic "Life support & Hazard suit" gauges that depletes based on planetary conditions. The way to refill the gauges is simply using the super common resources found all around you. So survival is a non-issue at all times, and death doesn't set you back at all. Where's the tension and fear of the unknown when you essentially know nothing will harm you, and even if something does harm you odds are it won't do much of anything? It all seems very tacked on, as if Hello Games realized that the bland exploration caused by proceduraly generated planets would be boring if they didn't tack on various gameplay elements. Problem is, those elements don't enhance the game, its just frustrating.

Further adding to the list of faults is the combat. With poor aiming mechanics and lackluster enemy variety and design, there is no depth. On foot combat offer very little in the way of challenge or fun, and ship combat doesn't really change much at all. Fighting enemy starships is a tedious "blown one up blown em all up" affair, and outside of pirates occasionally trying to blow you out of the sky, you'll probably forget your ship even has guns attached to it.

The trade and economy system are lackluster. Galaxies have different values for items, but with such limited space and no way of knowing what the next galaxy's trade rates are, keeping your selling items (indicating by green boxes) in-between trips is sort of impossible when you're always bleeding for inventory room. Trading with NPCs is sort of pointless as well, seeing as how they all behave the same way and you always get the feeling like you're paying or losing out on trades to get next to no benefit. Whenever you walk up to any trade ships you encounter, the flavor text for what the interaction is like may change, but your options are still “Trade for ship or stop talking to this person”. When you finally go into the trade screen, you may think to yourself that you're going to get to bargain, or offer your valuables in exchange for the trader's valuables that can be used to craft upgrades or something. But no, its a black and white “Buy at this one set price or don't bother talking to me”. The whole trading, buying and selling system has about as much depth and is about as interesting as NES RPGs like the original Final Fantasy.

The sense of discovery is lost here. What you discover isn't interesting and never feels worth discovering. Alien life is boring and dull, and you can't share your discoveries with them or any of the other players. What good is it that I discovered this galaxy when all of maybe 10 NPCs inhabit it, and no other human player will likely ever get to witness it or use my discoveries to aid in their survival there? Exploration proves fruitless, as the randomized planets lack the setpieces and gorgeous handcrafted vistas that such brilliant exploration games like Abzu, Shadow of Colossus, Flower or Journey have provided in the past or present. Combat is dull, survival feels like I'm babysitting some constantly depleting bars rather than using my wits to outsmart the universe, and the economy system is about as generic and uninteresting as any other game's despite its shallow attempts at depth or intrigue.

In short, if all you want from a game is pretty scenery and can handle the worst pop-up you've ever seen in a game as well as lifeless planets with no personality, than by all means pick this up, you can take some wonderful screenshots for your desktop. But if you're looking for absolutely any substance in your exploration or interactions with the universe, or hope to discover some truly breathtaking moments on par with the aforementioned exploration games, I recommend looking to the upcoming Abzu, or the August PS+ game Rebel Galaxy for your exploration or space trader/pirate needs.

After that planets all begin to look the same, you recognize the same plants and animals with very minor changes everywhere and the unholy grinding of minerals is enough to drive you mad.

There is little to no content to be found and the game is more of a mindless resource grind for no apparent reason other than to try and call that some slap of content. There isn't any multiplayer even though the developers spouted that there would be (Albeit Minimal). And even exploring gets dull as you quickly come to find out that everything you explore is EXACTLY like the last, Except it has been given a different color.

In the end, I would NOT recommend "No Mans Sky" to anyone, Not even to fans of bland exploration genre games. As it is just not worth the 60$ purchase.

No Mans Sky ends up being another failed game where developers promise the universe (literally) and end up delivering nothing at all.

I found that the totality of the aesthetic experience, something I thought would really be a selling point in this game, is utterly lackluster. It's amazing just how often the sound effects and music combine to create a supremely unpleasant effect. Every once in a while the game would create a lot of fanfare over the fact that I just walked an arbitrary number of feet since starting the game. Trivial statistical events like these are treated like major events, even though they couldn't possibly be less significant. For a game that tries to emphasize biology and diversity, what ends up being highlighted is how tremendously inorganic the gameplay experience is. None of the it feels natural. It comes off like a desperate exercise in alchemy. Truly, the most fun I've had with this game was when I watched the trailer in 2014. I had my reservations that these guys were in way over their heads, and sadly, my fears are confirmed. There's a reason AAA titles are developed by huge teams: that's what it takes. As it stands, I'd say a fair price for this game is $10. Any more than that and you could be playing something so much better. Expand

Also, the diversity of planets is not what I expected. First couple of planets were somehow different, but then I started to discover planets, which were just re-skinned versions of basic planet archetypes. Toxic planets, radioactive planets, ice planets? Only difference is logo above the shield and exosuit alert message. Behavior is all same - it just reduces protection level continuously. Every animal and every flower is almost same and acts the same. On planet 1, you get cow body with dog head, on planet 2 you get cow body with chicken head. On planet XY you get cow body with head XY etc. What is the point of discovery, when everything you can discover is just some randomly generated stuff with no logic in it? What is the meaning of discovering caves, when there is no secret at the bottom? From technical point of view, game is really good. I really enjoyed views on some planets. 1) The assets are very low quality. I mean, visible pixels and all.

    2) It is nowhere near being optimized. Let me just say this: the console is the nexus of optimization. They spend hours and hours making it look good on these because they have a limit of hardware. Don't get me wrong: it will look much better on the PC than on the console, but the resource cost will probably be much higher than you expect. Also: wouldn't be surprised in the lease if it is FPS capped like it is on the playstation.

    3) You see most of the available assets on the first few planets you are on. After that, the assets repeat over and over and over again. On one planet, gold looks like gold, on another planet, it's the same but BLUE! And they weren't even thorough enough to make all of it cohesive. When you see the little gold bits flying at you (collecting them) suddenly they turn from blue to GOLD again! #SCIENCE!

    4) It's really cool that you want to name that animal after your son, but you will probably be the only person who ever sees it. With the repetition of assets means that there are NUMEROUS iterations of things that look the same, but don't keep the name that you gave them. Even in the same SYSTEM, you go to another planet and that blue flower that gives you Platinum? It looks exactly the same, but it's an entirely different species.

    5) It's not an exploration game. I was told this game was going to be an explorer's wet dream. The thing that is so agonizing (like, blue balls level agonizing) is that it COULD be that! The problem is that you will spend so much time acquiring resources that allow you to survive long enough to explore that you won't be able to actually enjoy the exploration that you want to do! Remember when the food/water timers were WAYYYY too fast in Rust and H1Z1? Yeah, it's that bad. It may not be food/water in this game: it's protection and life support. Something something a rose by any other name....? TL:DR - it's a survival game with exploration elements, not an exploration game with survival elements.

5a) I sure hope you like busywork - because that is pretty much all the game is! Tag plants and animals on one planet, do it again on the next!

    6) The biggest thing for me is all of the evidence that Sean Murray totally lied to us for a long time (see places like reddit, if you can stand the fanboism for long enough). Remember this last week when he started tweeting and blogging about how we shouldn't get upset if the game is totally different than he presented it? Yeah. How can I trust a team that has billed the game as one thing for so long (OK lets be honest, it took him 4 years just to say what you even did in the game so I guess that we can't go too hard on him here) and then pulled the ole bait and switch.

    7) He is still an indy developer even though he's backed by sony. So let's say that he actually intends to fix the things he says that he wants to - it will take the team FOREVER to do it because of how small the team is, and how many platforms they must update all at once. Do the math.

    8) It is a buggy mess. There are so many examples of clipping and things just not working right that I couldn't even list them all. Sometimes when I take off in my ship, I hover nicely above the ground like I should, other times I am catapulted across the solar system with no way to get back to the planet because I'm out of fuel lol.

    9) They pretty much plaigurized Rodina for exploration mechanics.

The game, when first begun will make you feel incredible, I was alone on this planet no one else had yet been on, everything was there for me to find and it was incredible - I spent a few hours running around naming new species that I found and plants and the such

Incredibly, it was once I set off in to space I realized how poor this game really was, I eagerly jetted to my next planet and traded some resources at a local space station, I landed on my next planet excited by what I'd find, it was here that it went downhill.

I quickly realised that while everything looked different, (it was snowy instead of sandy) there was so little to do, I wondered around naming animals that looked pretty much the same, naming plants that looked EXACTLY the same using a rubbish mining laser to slowly get enough resource to fly to the next planet.

I have played this game for 12 hours or so and visited over 50 planets, but they all just feel the same - sure it's cool finding a large animal and naming it, but most of the animals look the same, the environments are pretty much the same besides some weather and color change and the game offers no progression, the combat is the dullest thing I've ever experienced, the story is a mess and I don't really care for it at all.

I'm sure you'll say "It's about exploration" and I agree, but unfortunately, even that loses its novelty extremely fast, I spent a third of my playtime in the inventory trying to figure out how to build useless crap that would help my mining laser cool down a bit faster.

I really don't like this game. It's boring, repetitive, and not worth £50. It's a £20 game at most. ($25.83.) The survival elements in it takes it away from what it's supposed to be: a space exploration game. There is numerous glitches/bugs. I found one planet where literally everything was floating, for about 20 minutes, my sensitivity would not go up in game, no matter how high II really don't like this game. Also, this isn't really a glitch, but when you're finding a place to land your ship on a planet, it looks horrible on the horizon just seeing everything load in in front of you. I know that it would be so hard to make it already loaded before you get there, but come on! Hello Games can do better than that! I've played about 4 hours and will not be returning to it. I'm getting a refund. Expand

The animals on some planets look stupid and ugly, the ground has the same ground texture, combat sucks, the game has one thing which Is mining rocks and it gets boring and annoying. Actually a rather boring game. Would work well as a screen saver, or a beautiful time-waster for loading screens, but as a AAA game it's not very good. RNG will usually fail relative intentional craft, and that completely happens here. Planets are largely the same, which is not what you would want from this kind of game - you'd want variety.

I can imagine plenty on top of my head, how about animals that actually do anything? The only thing the animals will do is either stare at you, or give you a boring melee attack. How about an animal that spit fire, or shoot lightning bolts at you. Or a gigantic bird you could ride. Anything really. The aliens in the game dont do anything either, they dont even walk around for christ sake. They just sit in the outpost waiting to blurt random text at you. The combat with the sentinels are extremly lame and unsatisfying. There could also have been some other cool interaction included with NPCs, like training them to help you gather resources for example. Or breed animals, crossing different kinds to make new cool animals. Maybe there could have been things the alien could have done with the animals? Etc etc. Forget all of that, the animals dont even have proper collison-boxes to stop you from jetpacking right through them. The combat system in space is extremly simplistic and boring, no strategies like placing a mine or upgrading your ship to be much more suited for air fight than your opponents etc. Just aim and shoot and hope your shield dosent run out. There is never any reason to visit anything, leaving you with the feeling that no planet is really important to visit. They coud have made it so some planets had a really worthwhile thing getting but it was well protected, but nope. You will get bored with this games gameplay loop, which is basically mine this item at planet A so you can go to planet B and then warp to next solarsystem closer to the centre, in like maximum 5 hours. There is no multiplayer component to enjoy either, except maybe read what some user named an animal to on a planet. No way for you to build anything on any of the planets, to leave some kind of mark. And even if there was, how is going to find your remote planet? Probably no one. I bet this game will be just as lonely and deserted as its game universe is in 2-4 months from now. Im seriously doubting that hellogame can even save this game with patches as is now, as there is just so much lacking in this game.

P.S To you 10s not everyone that hates this game likes CoD alright? get that idea out of your minds.

This game, or should i say this "tech demo" is very very bare. In terms of content and stuff to do. If someone sold me this game at 30 dollars and told me it was early access id very much believe them. This game does not deserve any 10s. Please stop being over hyped and look at the game for what it is and not what you wanted to love.

    The basics:
Here's a run down of what you will do in this game. Mine and Explore. That is it. With the rare occasion of a dogfight here or there. The actual gameplay, is essentially you walking/flying around till you find any of the "?" locations on your HUD. While in between those destinations you can choose to look at rocks, plants, or animals. (if there even are any on the planet you're on) The first few times, it's pretty awesome honestly. But it looses its appeal, VERY fast. Soon you realize that the planet you're on looks almost identical to the planet you were on yesterday. Most people don't seem to understand how procedural generation works. This game is a good example to how it works in a simple setting. (This planet is green with blue trees and red water) (Next planet will have red trees, green water and a blue atmosphere) And that basic idea is how they get the supposed 18 quintillion planets because they consider even the slightest change as a new planet.
But i digress back to what you can "do" After finding outposts and alien artifacts and all that jazz. You can eventually upgrade your equipment. Your tool, your ship and your suit. Not with any cool tech or anything that's innovative.....its mostly just bigger inventory, with faster mining lasers and longer lasting life support.....to do what you were already doing but slightly more efficient. There is no reason to upgrade other than for the inventory slots. Nothing is saying " you can't mine this copper because your tool isnt powerful enough" you can mine everything regardless. So basically doing all the upgrades is mostly pointless.

    Graphics:
Oh boy, this one is mostly due to opinion i believe, but personally i think this game can run on last gen consoles no problem. Graphically this game is nothing to marvel at. From afar things look pretty amazing then you get about 15 ft away and notice it looks no where near that good. Mostly everything looks really bland and color saturation isn't that well done. IMO

    Sound:
The music is pretty generic, if youve seen interstellar, apollo 13, or any space based movie. You've probably heard some of the music.
The ambient noises though are very well done if a bit misleading. There are times where you hear noises preseumably from animals. Yet there is nothing around for miles.

    Issues with fandom to address:
"This game isnt for everyone its an exploration game! you CoD lovers dont get it!"
No, they get it. You're the one who doesn't get it. You're so blinded by Hype you can't see what the game actually is.

"18 Quintillion planets!? theres so much content in the game! so much to do!"
No, there isn't. Walking around and looking at stuff isn't the content people normally refer to. They refer to the actions you can do in a game. Where No mans sky has no actions. You walk around mine and upgrade. That is your sole game play experience. As for the planets, once you've seen 10 planets, you've seen most of what this game will show you. A lot of it is pallet swaps, and actually pieces of monsters/plant life switched on to different bases and called a different species.

"This game isn't for you don't vote it down because you don't like it!"
This game is flawed. Very much so. If you can't understand that you cant review games. This game has been hyped so hard people literally deflect negative reviews just to force themselves to love this game.

    Overall:
No Man's Sky, is not innovative, not entertaining, and not fun. It's sad to see a developer create a game in a genre where other games have succeeded in with little to no hype. Where this game falls flat on its face and hard.
Give it a try if you get the chance, but i would not purchase this at full price. Its worth playing and seeing for yourself but odds are, you will tired of it within 3-8 hours.

Fundamental flaws plague this game every step of the way. Mouse flight is horrible. Controller flight is horrible. I immediately avoid all flight combat as quickly as I can because of how terrible flight is. On foot shooting is lifeless. Point in a direction and your shots auto home to your enemies. Crafting is annoying to understand at first and then horribly tedious to use once you figure it out. Creatures and sentinels spawn in magically after you are a specific distance away. You can kill thousands of them (both) and they'll keep respawning in the same area.

However the worst part of the game is the exploration. This is what the game is being sold on. Exploration. There's nothing to explore. Every cave is the same. Every ocean is the same. Every outpost, every space station, every radio relay, the same. Creature generation is terrible. I've seen the same crab on about 10 planets already with a slightly different head. Graphically the game is horrible. Bland textures just about everywhere, even on highest settings. Pop in plagues this game. They tried to remedy it with what could be perceived as a powerpoint presentation transitional effect, but it just look ugly.

It's very rare that I would consider a functioning game as being below average, but this game doesn't even warrant a 5/10.

Because it is missing a lot of features Sean Murray either clearly stated would be in or kind of hinted at in with his vague answers on the billion interviews he did.

The game is simply boring, the problem with procedural generation is that in a very large scale like this, if the "bucket of parts" is too small (which it clearly is) you suddenly end up with everything looking the same... and... everything does look the same. Besides color scheme changes and a couple of texture changes it's amazing how everything just looks like copy paste in terms of planets and their environment.

I don't mind single player walking/survival sims if they have a decent story, rewarding mechanics and sufficient variety to keep me entertained (Don't Starve / The Flame in the Flood / etc). NMS party piece which is that vast huge universe where anything is possible is just a grindfest where in reality not that much is possible at all.

I definitely do not recommend anyone buying this game full price right now. Wait it out, maybe with some more content patches (let's hope they're not paid DLC) and at about half the current price it will be a decent game.
I don't think it will ever be a great game, it just doesn't have the core structure to allow it.

    Exploration:
The exploration is nice at the beginning of the game. The sense of wonder and scale of it is nice at first, but it starts dropping off really fast after your first couple of planets. I noticed duplicated things within my first 3 hours of playing, which was pretty disappointing in all honesty (I expected it to happen at some point but not that fast). The stations and outposts littered over the planet start to get dull due to the fact that they're pretty copy paste between the assets and aliens that inhabit them. Although each planet had plenty of things on it, the things you could actually do felt as if they were stretched way too thin. There aren't even any local missions you can do for credits even though there are so many stations and outposts you visit. Speaking of credits....

Trading: I've played alot of Space Games, they are an absolute favorite of mine. A key part of a space game is the trading and for No Mans Sky...it gets about as complex as looking at what color an item is. Its abysmal in my opinion, especially when they kept raving about how in-depth and intricate it would be (just like half the **** they said was going to be cool). The whole system doesn't really work for trading because of the vastness of everything. Usually if I'm trading in a space game I would try to find the best trade route for a commodity, but since there are quintillions of planets that can't really happen and its more of just a "sell whatever **** you dont really want to make room for other **** trading style. By far the most surprising (and mind boggling) thing was the absolute disregard for the regulation of credits. I made 2 MILLION CREDITS ON MY FIRST PLANET, WHAT THE ACTUAL **** This wasn't even that hard, I just found all of these relics that serve no other use except to be sold, and they were worth 15,000-55,000 credits each. Find those a couple of times and you'd be rolling around in a solid gold spaceship with spinners and underglow.

Crafting: The crafting system is pretty standard, just collect certain materials and combine them with others to make parts and combine those parts and other materials to make things and so on and so forth. Not much to go on about here
Inventory and UI: The UI tries to be clean but suffers from the "Clean lines but too much **** on my screen" dilemma that happens to many games. They try to cram everything into and it just ruins the point of the minimalist design to it. Interacting with things is also an absolutely peeving experience, since you have to click and hold for something to happen as opposed to just clicking. It's something small that over time begins to just get annoying. The inventory itself (although upgradable) feels way too small. The fact that upgrades for your Ship and Exo-suit take up inventory spaces in those things makes absolutely no sense to me, especially when you're first starting out and want to collect every single thing in sight.

Flying/Combat: Another big disappointment for me, because its so watered down and simplified that its honestly frustrating. Flying is awful, like its on-rails but the rails are rusted out. I can't even turn my head to look around at the landscape or for approaching enemies. The turns feel stiff and not respective of most physics since I can tilt my nose down and still be going forward while watching my ship "burn". The combat is.....well it doesn't really feel like combat. You know how you're supposed to fear death in survival games? Like its the end all be all? Not here, I don't fear anything in this game. Not giant cliffs when I run out of jetpack fuel, not enemy ships and most certainly not these Wheatly looking mother****ers that patrol the planet. I left my computer while in combat with one of these things for five minutes and came back to only just being notified that my shield had dropped. It's a joke, and for a Survival/Exploration game its insulting.

Performance: Check on Steam just to see how many people can't even launch the game (Michael Aoun being one of them) because the devs didn't add a compatibility to the architecture of the game. On my rig, the game runs fine one moment and then the frames drop to dog****, and go back up again. This happens without any reasons, whether there's thousands of things around me or one. The FPS itself locks itself to either 30 or 60 randomly and on occasion drops it like its hot to a nice 14. As far as programming goes, its about as well put together as Pokemon GO (Fix your **** Niantic).
Overall, the game is playable and has redeeming qualities that can make it fun for a first time and a little while after. But after the amount of hype and promises that surrounded it ended up just being a series of 5-yard line fumbles and blatant lies, I can't justify purchasing this game right now, let alone at a discount.

The issue is, that it started to falter once I reached my second star system, seeing nearly identical planets and poorly designed animals on said planets, it made me realize that the lack of genuine diversity and the reliance on procedural generation were the games biggest issues, it seems underdeveloped. There were only a few things to do in the game, for example shooting animals is punished and doing most anything else is purely dull, ironically I'm saying this as someone that likes boring work games (i.e. Papers Please). The language learning was dull and felt pointless, as most of the words you learn never show up in standard conversation. The game may be almost infinite in size, but it's absolutely shallow in design, showing a complete reliance on the procedural generation and providing one of the most forgettable experiences I've ever had with a game. I wouldn't recommend it, even as a case study for poor game design as it is not deep enough to really get any analysis out of, and is honestly only worth looking at for its almost deceptive advertising, including references to the seemingly non-existent multiplayer, the claim that you could land on comets and the actual well put together animals. Yes, it may have 18 quintillion computer generated planets that may be impossible for humans to visit all. But the question you will be confronted with is would you even want to? The game and options we were shown and told by Sean Murray, are not here.

I could stomach No Man's Sky if it was an indie game that sold for maybe $20. But to charge $60 for a game that you know doesn't deliver the features that were stated feels bad.

Right now I'm letting my 9 year old play it because Minecraft in space is what he enjoys. Maybe after a year or 2 of patches and DLC this will be what we were promised.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Developer Hello Games, and Sean Murray in particular, went from hero to zero within the first week of release. It took a little while for people to realize how little this game has to offer. 18 squintillion planets is not the same as 18 squintillion endlesslly interesting or surprising elements. That would be too much to ask, of course, but in reality there is a sense that you've pretty much seen and done everything within about 10-15 hours.

A lot of that time is spent performing pretty dull and repetitive tasks - sorting inventories, mining rocks, talking to cut-out characters or reading sub-par sci-fi text. Yes, there are fun bits - blasting off from a planet and travelling to that moon you saw in the distance - is good for a while and the lack of load screens are a plus, but this feels like the bare bones of a full-price game.

Initially, you're drawn into the promise of the game, but this feeling is soon replaced with frustration, disappointment and even resent. The lack of different ship types, the poor combat, the irritating sentry bots, the lack of factions etc. all of this has been well covered. Much of this could have been easily remedied even by a small development team. This is when games get extremely frustrating. Why is it that a few hours play can reveal glaring flaws that a team of people failed to notice in five years?

I'd watched videos of Murray talking about his pet project, prior to release, and it seemed like he was a genuine fan-boy producing something for the joy of it, not monetary gain. So, why lie about the game's contents? Why, after five years of production, leave glaring design flaws in place (the transmitter/ship upgrade function is surely not intended)?

If Hello Games had charged £15 for this, and not over-hyped/lied about the game's contents, then they would have been met with a much more positive reaction.

As it stands, No Man's Sky is the first game I've actually contemplated seeking a refund for. My advice for gamers: wait for a price drop, wait for promised content to arrive and hope this promising game finally delivers.

My advice to Hello Games/ Sean Murray: spend the next year or two providing FREE upgrades to this game, deliver on your hype/promises and maybe, just maybe the squintillion people who bought into this might forgive you. Oh, and stop grinning.

The game starts out as an epic adventure. Your ship is dead in the water. You're stranded on a deserted planet with nothing to do but fix the ship and start the epic journey into space. With 18 quintillion promised planets, that sounds like an epic journey to me. Unfortunately, this is where the games loses all it's appeal. Eighteen quintillion planets isn't exactly that. It turns out that this is a simple mathmatical formula that indicates the number of potential planets you could interact with. What that ends up equating to is that you have many planets that are essentially the same with only mild variations. If a planet has 6 different variables, you could end up with a planet that is 111111, or 111112, or 111113. Those are three different planets, but they really only changed one variable. So essentially the planet will look and feel exactly the same aside from that one altering variable. This makes for very boring gameplay.

I like many others was expecting Minecraft for adults. With the ability to creat my own worlds. To build bases, and interact with aliens. The aliens are cookie cutter replications at best. I, like many others, continued playing the game for hours thinking, "There has to be more. So much more was promised. Maybe I'm just not far enough into the game to find these things yet." Sadly after about 25 hours, I'm still just mining resources, expanding my inventory slots, buying new ships and trying to learn languages. All of these things gets incredibly boring after about 5 repetitions. About 5 hours in the game started feeling monotonous. The game feels more like a $19.99 PSN game than it does a $60 full release.

I'm still holding out hope to see if the game gets better as the developers start introduing new content with patches. I'm not holding my breath, as they didn't deliver on their first set of promises, so why would they deliver on their latest set. Hold out on this game. Give it some time to see exactly what the developers have in the works. Wait until those patches are released and find some friends who were foolish enough to believe the hype and bought the game sight unseen. Then if the devs can deliver on their promises, and only then, should you even consider wasting your money on this released too early game.

The shallowness is the bigger problem though. Especially with the £50 price. It has the same amount of depth as something like Pokémon Go and should be a free game with in-app purchases for determined players.

    It's just not worth £50.

I requested a refund and didn't get one. Sucks but I'll survive! But I don't think I'll spend that kind of money on any game again. I'm done with full-price gaming. I'm not prepared to risk money on a new title and be burnt again, and I've already decided not to spend £50 on remakes and sequels.

We may look back on No Man's Sky as this generation's ET moment. The game that marked the end of a console era. It's brought to a head many problems. The high expense of games and the lack of originality have been a problem for a while. Now we can add the low bar for quality. I'm done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't let No Mans Sky's massive size fool you, while it is huge it is not the game that was shown at its reveal in 2013. It has been downgraded to a less interesting and boring title with nothing else to do but mine for resources and wander the "diverse" planets of the galaxy. There are many things missing from the game that were promised by the games developer Sean Murray such as multiplayer which was one the most hyped features of the game. The first hour of the game was ok but It gets repetitive and the amount of crashes increases the more you progress to the big secret at the center of the galaxy, which turns out to be fancy loading screen which takes you to another galaxy to do it all again! Overall No Mans Sky is a broken, glitchy pile of lies and disappointment. Not worth $60 save your money for finished titles with all the promised features included!

As soon as you get enough materials to fix your star ship, you can finally leave the planet you started on. Don't get me wrong, the first hour of playing this is pure awesomeness. But then it hits you like a bus with rocket thrusters, all that wonder and excitement you had for the game will be gone very soon. Now the game becomes a repetitive romp through an almost empty universe, full of terrible, derpy creatures, glitches, and constantly having to refuel your mining laser thing and life support. At the point where i had to get the materials to build a warp drive or whatever, I found myself going from planet to planet trying to find one goddamn material, that none of the planets near me had, yet it was essential to have this part on my ship. Past this point I really just gave up on the game. I haven't played it since the day it game out. Also, the amount of promises Hello Games made, that were all but abandoned, is disappointing, and if anything has ruined there career in game production. All in all, if you want to play this game, don't spend 59.99 on it, don't even spend 29.99 on it! If you really really want to experience the repetitive nature of No Man's Sky, wait and buy it when it is under 20 dollars. Irrespective of what was or wasn't promised in the marketing hype leading up to the release, No Man's Sky is fundamentally dishonest. It's a shallow, sterile, boring, repetitive slog in the guise of a deep, vibrant, exciting universe of limitless possibility. An adventure game without the adventure.... or the game.

The first few hours of this game are unlike any other experience in gaming - the first time you hop in your ship and leave your planet is magical. It's fun to land on a station for the first time. Meeting your first few NPC aliens is awesome. The graphics aren't spectacular but the art style is great - the colors and design make you feel like you've stepped into an old sci-fi book cover.

Once you land on your second planet, the magic starts to wear off. Hey, wait, didn't I literally see that EXACT same building on the last planet I was on? Why do all the animals on this new planet look really similar to the animals I saw on my last planet? Wait - I literally saw that exact same plant on the last planet I was on.

Ten hours into the game, you start to see the game for the repetitive slog it is. There is no point to doing anything - the only reason to upgrade is so that you can get more inventory slots so that you can hold more resources to get more upgrades to get more slots to get more resources to get more upgrades to get more slots....wait. Ostensibly the main thing you're supposed to do is explore, but this is pointless, since there's nothing to discover. The buildings are all the same copy-pasted things you've seen before. The same plants are on nearly every planet you go to. Animals are rarely exciting to discover because they look like Sporesque mishmashes of parts, and you begin to realize that you've seen almost all of the parts on other planets before. Occasionally you find a really awesome planet, you get excited, take a few screenshots, and then realize that wait, there's still nothing to really do here, because there's basically no content in the game.

The combat is sluggish and uninspired. The UI is worse. Oh, your ship's shields are down. You have plenty of resources with which to charge them again. But wait - you have to open your inventory menu (which doesn't pause, so you're still being shot at during this), manually select your shield module in your inventory, and then select the charge button. The game records your "journey milestones" such as how far you've walked, how many times you've warped, how many ships you've destroyed, etc. However, whenever you get one, a ten to fifteen second long animation plays that inhibits your controls, but doesn't prevent you from taking damage. Oh, you're fighting and you get a milestone? Well screw you, because we're now going to lock your controls while enemies continue to blast you to death. The UI is absolutely terrible, and every element of gameplay in this game feels like it was designed by an artist - because getting the artistic style correct is clearly prioritized over everything else.

Essentially, everything you do is pointless in this game. If the game were priced at $5-$10, my review would be much different, because none of this would've mattered at that price point. However, this is a $60 full-priced release, and is a total rip-off.

On top of the game's problems already - the developers either totally overpromised, or blatantly lied about, features that didn't make it into the final game. They have also been almost totally radio silent since a few weeks after release. They still continue to release bug fix patches, but say almost nothing other than patch notes. They clearly don't care about their playerbase.

Skip this one altogether - save yourself some time and frustration. And at the same time, you can avoid supporting these terrible developers.

Add to this the creatures you are supposed to be interested in exploring - the first few new ones I saw I was impressed by, it was unexpected and it felt new. After your tenth planet it feels very stale. The aliens are randomly generated and it shows - they don't look in anyway normal but like a collection of random parts of other animals stitched together (which is what they are to be fair). It is impossible for me to recommend this game which died for me after less than 10 hours gameplay - the new updates have not inspired a change in opinion because they cannot make up for what is the key flaw of the game - a lack of interesting things to actually do. Unlimited planets to explore sounds amazing in theorie but in reality this is only a game for people who really love the survival-colleting recources-upgrade&build things aspect. There is no exciting gameplay nothing happens on these planets. If you explore your landing zone you literally saw the whole planet there are no mysterious caves, forrests or other things you can explore. The animals and plants still look very repetitive. There is nothing happening on these planets only thing you can do is collecting recources thats the only purpose of them. I think this is very dissapointing because what's the point of a whole universe to explore when everything is so boring it isn't worth exploring. Like I said for me the idea sounds great and they did their best but in reality it doesn't work. It would be a much nicer game if there are only 100 planets to explore but every planet has the magic of a world like the worlds in Gof of War do. The hype of this game was too much that it was a sure thing it could not live up. However, after the smoke clears, and you settle down, how does the game stand up to others? The answer is, terrible. This game, despite all the promises, has little to offer. With almost no point other than to walk forward, this game gets stale very fast. You will feel lonely due to never seeing another live player, you will feel lost due to not having a true point to the game, you will get bored, because that is what this game is about.

You can explore planet after planet, the colors will change, the lack of game doesn't. Look for this game in the bargain bin by the end of the month. I almost feel bad for those who paid $60, but to each their own.

Like many games before it, Sony / Hello hopes to bank money through creative marketing and hype and once that dies, the price will plummet. With the embargo set to the launch day, the writing was on the wall.

Typically with my game reviews, I have played a great deal and have collected my thoughts nicely for a, hopefully, well-written review. Let me say that I have played 5 hours tops of No Man's Sky. However, I can fully explain to you why you should not buy this incredibly disappointing game. Not only is it so disappointing, it's actually quite horrible.

    Wasted Potential
No Man's Sky is a sandbox survival game where you are placed in a vast universe of 18 quintillion planets. The main part of the gameplay is exploration. That's great! A game like this should bring back fascinating exploration with unique discoveries that you can actually make. But here's the other side to that coin (it's ugly): EVERY PLANET IS THE SAME. Yes, it is true that the scenery on every planet is different. However, the terrain, materials, surface, and special locations are all virtually recycled. Plus, the stuff you do on every "unique" planet is the same. What do you do on these planets? Well, for the love of God, it doesn't even deserve to be called gameplay. IT'S A WALKING SIMULATOR. There's gathering of materials (like Minecraft), yes, but you know what that goes to? TO KEEP YOU FROM DYING AND KEEP ON WALKING. Not only that, but the movement of your character is painfully slow and clunky. Now that brings me to the only thing in this game that I really, REALLY like. Flying around in your spaceship is awesome. This might be the best spaceship simulator in a video game. It really gave me a true sense of scale and discovery, like I was on the Enterprise. But who really cares about that when the rest of the game is so boring? Let's also not forget to mention that there is absolutely no guidance as to what you're supposed to do in this world. I don't want hand-holding in a game like this! However, I hear there's a "story" in this game. Not in my experience of playing! Nothing pointed me towards a "story" or set goal. There aren't even procedurally-generated quests.

    Inventory Management/Crafting/Trading
This is a big part of the "gameplay", but this will be fast to say what I think about this. The challenge and possible fun of inventory management is completely wasted since you barely have any inventory slots. I swear, you will hear "INVENTORY FULL" at least thirty times every hour. Also, the crafting is too simple and never feels worthwhile. So does trading. I could never find anything that sparked my interest. It's so stupid to know that a "big" part of this game almost always feels meaningless. Shooting, of course, doesn't fit very well into this part of the game, but it's still worth mentioning that it's terrible. The shooting is so bland and boring.

    What Did I Like?
TWO THINGS. Two VERY SMALL things that I pretty much forget about by looking at how painfully bad the rest of the game is. As I said before, one of them is flying in the spaceship. The other one is uploading your discoveries to the game's world. However, this gets old fast, mainly because of how there's no way to see what other people have uploaded in the game.

    What Else Did I Hate?
Allow me to explain how the planets in the game are "procedurally generated". Imagine going to 2 different planets in the game. The scenery and such is different! However, if you just switched the 2 planets' scenery...it would be the EXACT same. It's so pathetic. What really pisses me off is that this game thinks it can charge $60 for the 18 quintillion planets on display. You know what this game is? A non-free tech demo. If I had a physical copy of this game, I would stomp on it like the freaking Hulk. Okay, maybe I wouldn't do that, but if I could sell it immediately, I would.

    DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

No Man's Sky is a shining example that procedurally generated content is only as strong as the gameplay elements around it and cannot, with its current limitations, be the core gameplay in and of itself. There's no rhyme or reason to how theNo Man's Sky is a shining example that procedurally generated content is only as strong as the gameplay elements around it and cannot, with its current limitations, be the core gameplay in and of itself. Exploration wears thin after only a few hours once it sinks in that each planet is very similar to the last and there's almost no diversity in design. There's no rhyme or reason to how the system designs planets so you may just stumble across a planet that's listed as Extreme Heat, suffers from periodic fire storms that pushes the temperature over 250C, and has not a single bit of water, yet somehow has more animals and plant life than a temperate water world. I'd like to say this is an exaggeration but it isn't.

The other AI lifeforms in this game are stereotypes: greed driven trader race, mindless warrior race, advanced electronic race. They don't do anything of consequence except sit around in various huts waiting for you to stumble by to solve their ridiculously easy puzzles. Your existence as a player is solely to go from planet to planet, destroying the natural resources to build more fuel and materials in order to go to another planet and do the same thing. Over and over again. In a quest to... well, do nothing really. There's a quasi-goal of getting to the center of the galaxy but nothing ever explains why this is meaningful.

This is probably one of the most shallow games I've had the misfortune of playing. The survival elements barely exist because the game almost never puts the player in dire situations and is guilty of giving the player all the tools necessary to avert any crisis early in the playtime. The exploration is just dull and unrewarding and the items you can learn to craft are so few that you'll have learned them all - with exception to the damned Atlas Pass v2 and v3 - in less than 10 hours if you explore an entire system or two.

Make no mistake, this game isn't getting hate because people dislike the genre, it's getting hate because it's a terrible game. It tries to do a bunch of different things and fails at all of them (and frequently reminds you of these failures with crashes to the dashboard and a frustratingly clunky UI).

I am sick to death of insecure games media fanbots, post NMS launch, telling us their offensive judgments on how NMS critics don't have enough imaginations, or they expected too much, or wanted perfection, or they wanted more then whats possible....offending unsatisfied gamers by treating them as unreasonable, having impossible expectations, or are just naive. Blaming gamers instead of the game.

The NMS defence force has been in overdrive telling every one how wrong they are. Employing counter-criticism pieces as a desperate act to publicly react against strong criticism of No Man's Sky, treating its critics as unreasonable and unreliable.
They are Making comments acknowledging the games problems, but are coming off as an insincere. Making an obligation of acknowledging NMS problems, but making that point merely in passing, hoping to not return. And then go straight into slamming its critics as unreasonable.

There has been a growing divide between media reviewers and gamers unsatisfied with a lot of games , and No Man's Sky has really brought it to ahead. The counter-criticism by the media has strongly demonstrated this divide more than ever before. Smug, entitled, insider, know nothing know it all's, telling everyone how wrong they are, deliberately antagonising and widening that gap.

I am directly asking those judgementalists, what were MY expectations for NMS, what is the limit of my imagination, and how that effected my NMS experience ? Can't do it, of course you can't. No one Can. So those positions are ridiculous arguments. And they are offensive.

That’s actually fine. No problem there. The problem is when they spawn you and you get in to your ship and try to get to the objective… even if you are holding down boost until your finger starts to hurt, the time to destination actually slows down and starts going up. That’s right, your grave and the objective point are both moving away from you. On the planet…. As you are going top speed towards them. Needless to say I never got there. Like an idiot I held on for 8 minutes with the timer not going down and never getting to the place I died. Immediately shut the game down and uninstalled. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played NMS for 33 hours. This is one of the most shallow and empty games I've ever played. Why have quintillion possible planets to "explore" when they are all basically the same and collecting resources is mind numbingly boring? For a game this basic you should have a small amount of planets to explore, not an infinite amount. The compelling part of the game was the possibility of how the game would progress, and what was at the center. Well the game doesn't progress (only in that you get bigger ships and more slots for items whose only purpose is to get you more money to get bigger ships and allow you to travel further, which actually has no point because..) THERE IS NOTHING AT THE CENTER. This game is a sham, a hoax, and anyone who gave it favorable reviews surely didn't play all the way through. There is literally nothing at the center. Just a wannabe poignant look at how large the universe is and how meaningless your trip there was. If this game's point was to explore beautiful planets, why make it so hard? Why make you grind for hours when there is no greater purpose in the game? You grind in Skyrim and Fallout to let your quests be easier and go more smoothly and learn the story. In this game you grind for the sake of grinding. There is absolutely no purpose to getting to the center, and there is no story. If you buy this game you will want your money back. Absolutely terrible. Expand

What they promised us: A deep complex space exploration game with warring factions, moving environments and a vast multiplayer Universe.
What we got: Sub par resource gathering and "crafting" game with lego creatures, static aliens, repetitive gameplay and LIES.

The game has no multiplayer at all, so the devs lied on that. There are no warring factions, sure you can gain favour with aliens, but they won't war against each other and their frigates don't move and battle like in the trailers. When it comes to the scale, sure it is a big galaxy. but you will notice the patterns of creature lego parts and world types very quickly. And the space part is in no way realistic since the "star systems" are just lumped together clusters of usually ugly planets, all static, all with only one biome and a sickly colour pallet. And since when did space become full of coloured gasses? I know nebulae exist but most of space is black- but that's just my inner nerd, I would prefer more realistic space.

Really I don't want to go into all these faults and lies too much, because everybody has already done this so it would be pointless- I recommend the Angry Joe review to really see the nature of the game.

The biggest problem with the game is a lack of purpose. The purpose is not survival- survival is not that hard and does not get harder like in games such as Don't Starve, so merely not dying does not give the game purpose. There is no building, so that is not the purpose- don't expect to make space empires or anything. There is no faction war, and combat is pretty bad, especially space combat, so that is not the purpose. There is no multiplayer, no bumming around with friends, no griefing (which the devs said would be in the game but to multiplayer so that was a lie), basically no multiplayer. Exploring is fine, until you realize only a few things change on each planet and there is no coherent story.

So the only purpose at all left in the game is getting to the center of the galaxy, where the devs said a mind blowing ending would be. Getting here is a huge grind on planet hopping and mining, but when you do reach the center of the Universe, NOTHING HAPPENS. Yep, you just get cheesy music and a pan out of the galaxy, then getting dropped into a new galaxy. It is the equivalent of making a new save file in effect. Just google "nms ending" and watch the video.

So my final score is 2. The game really has nothing going for it and the price tag is way too high, and on top of that the devs lied. Like I say, just watch the AJS review.

My problems arise from some less common issues, but I still am annoyed by all those flaws that other people adressed, like inventory space, and the lies of the devs. Heres what I think.

    Pros:
Cool soundtrack, Nice colour palate, a cool translation system where you have to slowly learn new words to slowly find out what aliens are saying, and a spaceflight system that, while barebones, I rather enjoyed flying around huge planets in a vast universe.

    Cons:
    Okay, where to start.....
The developers pointed out countless times that this was a game about exploration, and discovering the unknown. Here's the catch: every single **** planet and solar system has already been discovered. Each solar system has a space station, and every planet has spaceships flying around it and bases built on them. It completely defeats the **** purpose.
Planetary variation. The planets are criminally similar. Sure, they're different sizes, but there are only two types of planets; planets with a slight majority of hilly terrain, and planets with slightly more water and super shallow oceans. Maybe a few floating rocks here and there. Of course, the biomes and creatures are different, but that gets really old after awhile.
Draw distance. It doesn't look like I'm on a **** planet when it's always as foggy a certain distance away as London in the 1950s. You can't see any horizons. Its pathetic; it feels like I'm on some sort of **** test level, not a planet.
Space between planets. They're all extremely close together in a solar system, making it unrealistic.
Warp drive fuel. To get fuel for your warp drive you have to mine stuff to get stuff to make one thing, then mine some more stuff to make another thing that requires the previous thing, then **** BUY an object from a galactic trade terminal for a hefty amount of units, then mix the thing you bought with the things you previously used, add some other object, and there you have it; one warp drive fuel cell; enough to get to to the next Solar System over.
Deadlock. You need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. So you need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. So you need to mine resources to charge your multitool. But mining takes power. God, its a **** closed circle; you can't go anywhere with that.
Repetitive Elements. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Mine **** Sell it. Fly around a little, warp to next solar system over, then do it again. Holy hell.

Theres plenty of other things I hate about this game that I can't think of right now..... how come I had to spend 80$ on this game while everyone else spent 60$? Is it just because of location? God.....
I have to say that I haven't had a SINGLE crash on this game on my PS4, and have only EVER had one or two framerate drops, so, mine performs fine..... but thats still no reason for anybody to waste their money on this piece of trash.

It was frustratingly dull as it forced me to REPAIR my preorder bonus Alpha Vector starship. I had been misled into thinking that I would be able to warp to another system immediately, but it had me crashed landed on a radioactive planet with a toxic atmosphere and overprotective Sentinels and a belligerent crab that I encountered when I fell into a grand canyon I was attempting to cross with the aid of my jet-pack when it ran out of gas midway across and I had to walk through a seemingly endless cave system, full of dead ends, in the hope that it would provide a surface exit - the only upside being that I was sheltered therein.

After unavoidably dying twice due to the game having a difficulty level well above Legendary, and struggling to recollect my inventory from my awkwardly located grave site, it CRASHED.

    - the Multi-tool should take longer to overheat
    - the Mining should be tripled in effectiveness
    - the Hazard protection should be quadrupled
    - the Sprint should last nineteen times as long
    - the Jet-pack should not run out of puff at all
    - the Player should exit hyperspace and crash on a more hospitable nearby planet unless they own the preorder bonus Alpha Vector starship with players therefore having time to upgrade their Exosuit and Multi-Tool should they want to explore a hazardous environment and NOT be plunged into this adversity from the start whilst the game fails to make it in any way clear that this is not their home planet and they are an alien astronaut exploring the stars

Technically it delivers on the promises made in terms of scale, variety and rendering quality. Yet, although it is an impressive tour de force of ontogenetic just-in-time procedural content generation that actually remembers all recently observed changes and very loosely fits the definition of an MMO, my hoped for chilled experience of exploration and discovery (with optional risk balanced my commensurate rewards, whose extreme difficulty can be reduced through preparatory grind) has been an abject disappointment with my astronaut apparently stuck without a way off this benighted hellhole.

I didn't even buy the game to land on the planets!

Give me the option to restart in space and the option to load the last Save that I made inside a spacestation, as in its inspiration 1984's Elite, and I will be free to explore its dynamics in dangerous "What if?" experiments just as much as explore space and get into dogfights, and won't be so crabby.

    Cons:
Emphasis on survival lessens the creative sandbox/exploration elements.
Lack of multiplayer shrinks the vastness of the world.
Procedurally generated worlds eventually create feelings of a non-genuine universe.
(Inventory space becomes manageable a dozen hours in, and FOV should be updated in future patches)

    Pros:
Visually and auditorily beautiful in a unique way.
No loading screens give illusion to a vast game universe.
Switching between land/space settings keeps gameplay fresh.
Overarching goal to reach center of galaxy gives some purpose to gameplay.

Procedurally generated worlds are nothing new in the gaming world. Yet advertised as such, the universe sounded more appealing in the hype than what is reflected in the experience. The lack of loading screens makes the game universe feel vast, but the feature is nothing more than a novelty after a dozen or so worlds.

Beyond that, this game is a survival game with standard-unimpressive yet captivating enough to earn a 7/10- features: gathering, upgrading, trading, and of course, exploration. The distinguishing factor is the worlds where these features occur, and the overarching (though not game ending) goal to reach the center of the galaxy.

In imagined scale the game measures up to its name. However in perceived scale, "No Other Man's Sky" may be more fitting, as the game lacks multiplayer in every sense that matters. In retrospect the creator seemed purposely vague in this area, one of the many advertising strategies that added to the games hype.

The marketing of this game was absolutely immoral, and one might expect better from a beard-donning hipster like Murray. Sony & Hello Games knowingly created a monumental hype around the game, and chose to be deliberately vague about the very real limitations players would experience simply so they could sell the game for full price. The hype was there because the concept was so cool. Unfortunately Hello Games chose not to deliver the game the vast majority of people wanted, and instead released one of the most sparsely designed and empty games of all time, all the while dancing around the issue of multiplayer in a deliberately vague manner so as to trick people into a buy.

An incredibly underhanded marketing campaign. An incredibly dry game (at the moment).

If Hello Games adds player implemented creativity, like base building, player customization, and the ability to make my planets comfy, then I will consider a buy next year when the game is on sale. The absolute most I would pay for this game is £20 and that only be if base building etc. was added. Without these features the game should've been sold at around £7.99, and would've been an amazingly popular indie game with a cult following.

Got this game with high expectations, but after a couple of hours the lack of variety and the surfeit of repetition combine with the rough graphics and clunky UI to deliver a very very poor experience. But trust me, this becomes stale and boring very quickly. The game is as empty as the outer space it's procedurally generating. Don't experience buyers remorse, save yourself and pick this up 2nd hand at what will be a bargain bin game in a few months as floods of buyers trade in over the coming weeks. Expand

The gameplay is shallow and lackluster. You feel like this is a game currently in the alpha stage, because there's nothing to do. For some reason it's always online, but as people recently figured out, you can't interact with other players or even see them for that matter. Slapping on a 60€ price for an indie game and expecting people to buy it, is simply absurd. Though the problem is not with the price itself, because that's how much triple A games cost. The problem is that this game isn't even half of an AAA game, that costs as much as this. Overall it's a mediocre game, that was killed by the overhype it created. I don't care how many quintillion planets there are, the game gets stale and boring after a few hours. Expand

At this moment that game doesn't justify its price, its random and repetitive. Another victim of the hype train.
You go from one planet to another , one system to another, travel all that distance to mine elements. That's it,
It has its moments but they are not enough to make it a fun or engaging game, Its a game made by engineers not game designers.

Hello Games said as much with Sean Murray saying "We can't tell you much but the idea is to explore the universe, obtain resources and get to the centre"

You arrive on the first planet with the idea to explore, try and find resources, refuel your ship and your suits' systems, trade with NPC's and move on.

That's it. That is all you do. Nothing happens around you. Absolutely nothing.

There's a huge universe of planets with systems, trade routes, space stations and stations on the ground but nothing happens. Literally you are the only sentient being who has any kind of presence in the game world and as such it is all smoke and very, very boring mirrors after a while.

Sean Murray said "We can't tell you much but the idea is to explore the universe, obtain resources and get to the centre". Well, that pretty much sums up the whole thing. There is nothing extra, no extra objectives, no alliances to maintain, no consequences of your actions, no proper trade to be had.

You just find stuff, sell it and then move along. By the Gods it's a boring existence!

I've been playing game since de 80's. This is one of the worst. First, you have to repair the spaceship. Tutorial is long and boring (farm farm farm). Controls are clunky. Took 1h to get all the ingredient to finally leave the first planet.

Nice color palette and that's all.

Hipsters game = Looks cool (marketing videos, awesome art), but boring gameplay.

Garbage. Boring as Hell, clunky controls (shooting + ship fights). You grind so that you can grind some more and move to a neighboring planet to grind some more. Refund requested after 80min playtime

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
