Had great potential, too bad it gets boring about 3 hours in. All you do is gather resources to get to the next planet were you have to do the same. Wait for a sale!

I have earlier given this a high score. After watching countless videos and promises made by Sean, I won't even **** bother playing this game. This game could be SO amazing, but No Man's Sky seems like a social experiment on how many idiots would jump on the hype train. I feel like an idiot.

Expand

A game with the features of a small indie game, but with a big budget, triple A developer price tag on it. It's a mix of a low budget indie survival/gathering game crossed with a low budget indie space combat game, but does neither particularly well and is bizarrely selling for more than two separate games that do each component better.

Let's say it's an original concept wich naturally comes as an indie product, but this is not a game yet, but an alpha, so paying $60 for an alpha is abusing for the consumer, and the industry does not deserve this, bad graphics, buggy and glitchy, poor menu desing and mechanics, lacking sense of story, deficient combat, at the end the "Pseudo-game" is just for showing off.

Caro demais para um jogo indie. Não tem multiplayer, mesmo tendo sido anunciado. Quedas de frame que chagam a bater os 14FPS. Gráficos muito abaixo da média para geração, se a semelhando a jogos do Playstation II. Gameplay repetitivo e sonolento. O jogo em si é muito chato.

This game is the best example of broken dev promises I've ever seen. Almost nothing promised by Hello games is actually in the game. This title is just a pile of boring grind which would make gold miners of Asian MMOs cry in tears of horror and it doesn't deliver almost anything you have seen on the trailer videos.

This title is just a pile of boring grind which would make gold miners of Asian MMOs cry in tears of horror and it doesn't deliver almost anything you have seen on the trailer videos.

Do you expect to see huge well constructed species like in the trailers ?? Forget it - you will get clearly generated garbage like a frog with horse legs or simply creatures that look like 4 anatomy organs mixed together. Trailers have shown superb looking creatures which resembled some evolutionary path, but this is not what the game delivers. Instead you will get nonsensical (incredibly stupid AI) creatures that just run around frantically like they just took cocaine.

Do you expect unique planets with flora which is unique ? well you will get color` change. That is pretty much all you get plus minus few changes which are so generic that they are unnoticeable.

Do you expect multiplayer? - not there

Do you expect unique settlements? - well you get few settlements that just repeat over and over and over and look exactly the same on each planet based only by the faction.

Do you expect meaningful interaction with the ingame factions? Build relationships ??? Well - they are not meaningful in any way, but more just for leveling them up, so you can buy more things from them. Your place and role in the universe is ultimately pointless.

Do you expect to explore planets where nobody has ever been? Not in this game either - all planets are under some faction as they need some settlements ect, so you can buy slots for your inventory...

Do you expect meaningful crafting which involves real logic or thought? Nope - only mindless slot management and grind for the same resources over and over and over and over and over and over and over... You get the point.

To summarize - this game is worth 10 bucks at best and doesn't deliver almost anything Hello games promised. Companies like Hello Games should be sued until they are blue in their face for ruining the game industry and screwing over the player base.

The game has half baked shooting mechanics and the planets are not too different from each other. One planet has blue grass with red dinosaurs and the other planet has red grass with blue dinosaurs its just a different colour palette for each planet. This game is too ambitious for its own good and it shows, it has a lot of things to show only to be implemented in a very shabby way (shooting mechanics, flight "simulation", survival). It's pretty obvious that this game has an identity crisis, so much to the point that it has no goal (or rather a badly explained goal), giving us no incentive to play it. The centre of the galaxy was shabbily done and was a colossal disappointment. You can't sympathise with indie developers just because they are "indie", you need quality and for 60 euros it's not even close. The game is terribly repetitive and not in the good way. Procedural generation is a risk because it gives the game no personality, there is nothing really interesting in the game, no variables (deserted planets, civilization, wars). The only good part of this game is the soundtrack. Expand

It's full of that stuff. This game is also not "Chill", as some people describe it. You don't get much time to look at stuff and drift lazily through space since survival is a major aspect of this game - in the sense that it annoys you even when you're in absolutely no danger, inducing constant, unnecessary anxiety until the exact moment that you realize that there isn't anything dangerous in this game, which is coincidentally when it becomes boring. Space pirates in this game are not dangerous, unless you don't understand how the auto-aim system in this game works - which is apparently the case for a lot of people. That said, a lack of understanding of gameplay mechanics does not make a game fun, or difficult. It just makes you bad at the game.
P.S. Clearly there are a lot of people who don't like the game, and clearly their input is also considered helpful since most of the 'most helpful reviews' accurately describe the depths of woe you will discover in sony's most advertised release of this year. Just please don't buy the digital version of this game like I did, or else you'll have to contemplate the meaning of your existence after willingly spending $90 canadian on this.
P.P.S. I do really like the soundtrack, even if it is minced and thrown into your face throughout the game. In my mostly unrelated to this review opinion about the soundtrack, which isn't really a part of this game (unless you count recombinations of the same sounds as a soundtrack), it sounds more like the game that was advertised than the game itself.

The game has no story, but there is a reason why Sony was harsh against early leaks and stream impressions from this game -- it was because they did not want the bad word-of-mouth to spread before the hype machine squeezed all the dollars from the suckers that buy this game at $60.

Sean Murray specifically made this game sound like the best survival/exploration game made to date, it is not that. Space Engineers is 10x deeper, Elite Dangerous has way more to do, basically find any game labeled "Survival" or "Open World" and you will find much more content than in No Mans Sky, which is ironic for a game marketed as having an endless amount of content. the truth is, every planet is the same, with the same crystals, the same plants, the same buildings, the only thing that changes is the colour scheme. The alien interactions are pointless, there are three species, none give you anything interesting or tell you anything new, you learn a word occasionally, but even when you learn most of the words the conversation is mind numbing, they basically just ask you for some carbon to power up a battery or something along those lines, no lore to discover or stories to tell. Overall this game has the most tedious, boring "loop" gameplay, you mine minerals to fuel your ship, you sell minerals to buy a new ship and you craft ship/gun components out of minerals... thats it folks, you can of course go to a new star system and do that all over again if you wish, and again, and again, and again. This is not a survival game, this is not a space sim, this is more akin to Journey and other boring indie/art games that have you do nothing but walk/fly around and look at basic scenery with pixelated textures but hide it with bright colours. Wait for Mass Effect 4 or play the other two games mentioned above. Expand

No Man's Sky was hyped to basically be an infinite playground of wonder and discovery. The thing is, the underlying design and mechanics are so obvious that it is a constant struggle to suspend disbelief in order to feel immersed. I've seen many people call the game "relaxing" but how could a game be relaxing when you need to work so hard to like it? A first impression review said it well: you get out of the game what you put in. But this is supposed to be a game. A "relaxing" one at that.
When you see reused assets, the same weather effects with different labels, lack of physics or any other glaring sign of bad game design, it is on you, the player, to make an excuse to yourself to keep enjoying the game.

30 FPS, 30 FOV, repetetive, boring. There's also no story. If you know one planet you know them all, color palette changes a little. Theres literally nothing to explore aside ugly trees and animals that change only a little bit on each planet.

Big, $20 sandbox with few compelling toys, unattainable hype and a $60 price tag. Fun, but super unimaginative creatures, landscapes and "gameplay". Expected from something generated, not created, but still as disappointing. Looking worse than one would expect from PS4, being a "graphical powerhouse" and all.

My only hope is that they release some game-changing patches along the way. The universe is just so empty and repetitive. Sure, you get different animals on each planet - but they all just stand there doing the same thing. There's no realness to them, there's absolutely nothing surprising about each new planet besides cosmetic features.

The experience is akin to imagining the world devoid of all poetry and art, but retaining all the mundanity of tedious work epitomised by the Minecraft-esque mineral farming. Instead of the payoff arriving when the player gets to create stuff, the prize is more efficient mining equipment, for further mining. It is a nightmarish perpetual motion machine fueled by the players' patience, which, if they are lucky, will run out sooner rather than later. The lure of taxonomising the planets fades away when you realise it's basically a museum of photographs of characters and life forms, not because gaming is inherently a medium on screen, but rather because they have decided the only purpose of them is to be mined or labelled.

And just a non-spoiler point about the 'mind-bending' ending. I will quote J.L. Austin on the word 'real':

"[A] definite sense attaches to the assertion that something is real, a real such-and-such, only in the light of a specific way in which it might be, or might have been, not real." (1962, p.70)

Their representation of the universe is inaccurate, every single planet i've seen is inhabited with life and/or vegetation, there are no gas giants, no ring systems, no barren planets, black holes are portals, and no variation of star types. But i'm not here to talk about that stuff you can easily confirm by watching some gameplay.

What i really want to talk about is how they straight out lied about it being multiplayer. The problem is not the fact that you can't see or interact and play together with other people, it's the fact that they said it was possible and it isn't. I'm perfectly fine with the game not having multiplayer, i play single-player games and i enjoy them. What i have a problem with, is they straight out lied about it being multiplayer, that is unacceptable, a game developer cannot do that and get away with it.

I am sick of these vague as f*ck tweets from Sean Murray implying something but not stating it clearly. It's just a series of shady moves they make over and over again, careful choice of words leaving multiple interpretations, misleading disinformation. They actually covered with a sticker the multiplayer icon from the PEGI score on the Limited Edition box. A few months ago the game had the Massively Multiplayer Online tag on Steam, only recently they changed it to Single-Player. After years of clearly stating that it was multiplayer, ONE DAY BEFORE the PS4 launch, they tweet that the game is not ''a multiplayer experience''.

Sean Murray specifically said on interviews you could see and interact with other players, and play together. Then on the first day it has been confirmed by two streamers that tried to meet up, they were in the same system, same planet, same spot, and couldn't see each other, for one of them it was day time, for the other one it was night time. And the kicker? Hello Games are celebrating that ‘’two players encountered each other’’. How can they be so deceitful?

Going back to the gameplay, the excitement lasts for about the first few planets, then the repetition sinks in, and you're left with a feeling of huge disappointment. You scan stuff, find some outposts, you mine materials, fill out your ship and your gear, run out of inventory space, go to the nearest space station, sell your sh*t, and then you move on the the next planet. That's basically what you do until you reach the center of the galaxy for a NG+.

If you're looking for a good exploration sandbox game, get Subnautica. A indie game with a indie game price. 92% overall positive reviews. Has survival mechanics, crafting mechanics, building mechanics. Better graphics and better optimized.

Yes the games world creating algorithms are on a good side, worlds feel different sometimes more sometimes less. Sometimes its just the colors, other times its everything. But this is really not a problem because well they look different and its good, the main thing that is bad is everything else. Every space station, every ground station, mystical places they are all the same. I do get that sure it cant produce millions of difrrent stations, but when theres only like 2-3 types of markets and stations its not that awesome. And well ofcourse all the lies. You cannot play with other players, its a solo game and once you finish it theres really no point in doing it again. For me I just see this game as a lot of steam's early access and green light games. They start of as a kickstarter with early access you have to buy for 20$ and they make promises of what its going to be like it look awesome, and then it slowly fades away and the devs just randomly disappear. Don't mistake me the game is good for a single player run, to try something new, and to play and explore. But not for 60$. At best this game is an indie single player space adventure worth of maximum 30$ or 30eur. But not 60.Why? 60$ is a triple AAA game prices, so go look at the talents of witcher 3 on how a game is made and how much content is put in it. But that's money well spent. You may attack me for telling this and no man sky was a small company with I believe 13 people to begin with. This game apart from the graphics is really no better than the free flash games out there, the planets may look a bit different but all your there to do is mine the same 6-8 materials , take pictures of forgettable creatures and plants and head off to the next place and do it all over again. The ships are generic, you could fly a cardboard box and it wouldn't matter as long as there is more inventory space than the last one you had. The questline is forgettable and the alien races don't matter either. No multiplayer either is lame, basically you connect to a server just to get content and interaction is non existant.

Don't expect anything life-changing, unless your life revolved around playing terrible games. In which case this'll be your smelly holy grail. Expand

Lies lies lies, I believed the hype this game is a bunch of repetitive mining, Sure there are tons of cool worlds to explore, but thats it. i sat and played once to 6 hours and i was disgusted, the next time i decided to give it one more chance 4 hours later i deleted it from my hardrive. Id rather play rebel galaxy then this piece of smoking poop.

Made an account just to fulfil my moral duty of warning my fellow man of this atrocity. The character limit prohibits me from listing the laughably high number of lies, but you can find long, comprehensive lists of them with simply a quick Google/YouTube search. Also, they said that while you could run into other players, it was astronomical due to the supposed size of the world?

Guess what? That's right, players have already met.

Except they didn't. Because you CAN'T ACTUALLY MEET OTHER PLAYERS! Look it up, you'll be enraged.

Not to spoil the anguish of experiencing it yourself, but the endings not worth it. At all.

Had to sign up on Metacritic just for this game. Everything you've heard about this game in media is a lie. It's pure **** This game is a massive grind which blue-screens A LOT and has no story what so ever. There is no multiplayer, there is no animations on any aliens you meet. The AI is non existent. It's just pure ****

The devs lied to us constantly before the release and that's why I bought the game, like so many others. This is a decent indie game for 10 bucks. It's not even close to being worth 60 bucks. I would never have bought it if it wasn't for all the lies.

Stay away. Don't spend your money here. The devs ran a con. And they got us all. It really should be illegal. Don't encourage it. Don't ever buy anything from Hello games or any studio where Sean Murray might be involved in the future.

Every review you see thats positive is either from the developers, or testers themselves or people who were involved somehow. This game is a complete lie. There needs to be some type of lawsuit to pursue a chargeback for services not rendered. This is a complete lie. False advertisement. And because there is no penalty to create a game thats false, this is why No Mans Lie exists.

This game really lacks features. There is nothing to do. I mean you can literally do anything, but there will be no impact on the world. Grind resources is boring and the same "no reason - no impact" attitude. It's probably an average 5.0 game. But giving it zero score for it's dev's false promises should be a lesson. And why the ending aka center of the galaxy is so dull? Warning for new players: after reaching the center there is no feeling of accomplishment whatsoever. It feels like the devs needed another 2-3 years to make a game 6.0+ worthy. Shame. Expand

Hello Games promised a lot of features that aren't included in the final release. Sean Murray is a big liar. I think that this game is overpriced, 60$ is too expensive for an incomplete game like this.

Possibly one of the worst games I've ever played, promises broken no objective, Repetitive farming around an hour of fun, once you've flown its a joke.

Worst game in recent memory, filled with disappointment and lies. Sony issued me a refund on this product. I guess they even feel bad having peddled this garbage. Sean Murray should feel ashamed.

    Very expensive shiny frisbee.
    DON'T BUY THIS GAME!
Barring the slow and tedius gameplay theres 18zillion bugs to match all the planets.
Hello games should never have made this...opportunity lost...

The whole situation of No Man's Sky is like going to a store to buy an apple (for 60$) but instead of an apple, they give you a **** lemon and not even a good lemon but a **** moldy lemon that won't **** play in your PS4.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
