The media hype on this game was too much... and expectations were too lofty

UPDATE: I'm now about 6 hours into the game. I've increased my score from 8 to 9. I'm absolutely fascinated by the game and the depth. I've been to several planets now, two space stations, and have met a few different races (one of which was uber unfriendly to me.) The game is certainly geared towards exporation type players. My biggest gripe thus far has been the lack of inventory space. It is extremely limited.

And if you want some action, get a fighter ship and go destroy some freighters (then deal with the sentinels).
Does it worth 60 dollars? Maybe not, maybe yes... it's all about taste. I have bought AAA games for 60 dollars and I play them about 5 - 10 hours only, and games that costs 10 - 20 dollars and I play them for months.

I truly am amazed how stupid people's expectation are of this game. It seems like they expected some kind of realistic universe simulator. Instead of the survival exploration game with resource gathering & trading elements that it was told it would be.

People are entitled to their own option. However silly they may seem to me. So I wouldn't rule out any of the negative reviews you will come across. The game is not without its flaws, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have a bias towards the game. Furthermore, this game type is not for everyone, which is what I believe causes such a wide range of the mix reviews that are out there.

Some small annoyances the game have are:

    - the lack of changing your POV

    - the widescreen display shot that happens often which you have to wait for it to go away until you can start doing things again

-the inability to change the controller scheme (seriously who presses R3 instead of L3 in order to sprint!?)

-a few bugs that can take you a little out of the immersion

Nevertheless even with those issues, which I hope they fix, the game is absolutely amazing. The ability to completely loose myself in this game as I run around finding many new points of interest, flying in or out of the atmosphere, finding new star systems to explore, and simply learning the language in order to understand the different NPC's they have in the game. The progression feels real as you unlock more slots to your suit, find new and better ships, and new multi-tools which make it easier to gather resources.

I think if you are on the fence about NMS, and watching a gameplay videos of someone playing doesn't appeal to you, then this is just not your game. It doesn't make it a bad one, simply one tailor for a certain kind of person. Then again that is just one man's opinion.

The thing that bugs me the most about the game as it is today are the texture pop/pixel-ins that you get when flying close to a planet.

With mass media consumption, sometimes the most popular things can get reduced to the lowest common denominator. Thankfully, the gaming industry, in particular indie developers, can still take risks and produce unusual, creative video games that happen to also to be marketed to the masses.

While I am not too far in the game yet, No Man's Sky has been an experience that is rather unique. It borrows ideas from many open-ended, exploration games (like Minecraft), but has a clear direction of the type of game it wants to be ~ a game for explorers, not achievers, or multiplayer show-offs, or min-max competitive gamers. People often forget that other people not only have different tastes but also have different personalities, and these different personalities will want different types of experiences. Because of mainstream gaming trends over the past two decades, gaming has produced a certain mainstream audience. This mainstream audience creates a cultural dogma that expects certain characteristics to qualify a game as a "good" game.

If you want to go in expecting some crazy AAA title experience, don't get the game. If you are expecting deep systems such as complex yet derivative crafting and battle systems that you can get in hundreds of other games, then don't get this game. If you want another linear yet rich experience just like Journey or Abzu, be careful about getting this game. Watch videos and read critic reviews when they come out. The game is pretty much what I expected from previews and I am not disappointed as a whole. Yes, there are many issues in the game, but I've also had many moments of wonder, moments I would not have in most other games.

It's not perfect by any means, and many people will not like it. The game, as a pure Exploration/Survival game with other elements thrown in, surpassed the expectations I had from the interviews and trailers.

The game does not have a story, it starts you off with little hand holding and expects you to make your own way in the game world. There is an over arching goal of "Get to the center," but you can ignore it if you wish. I spent a total of probably around 9+ hours on my first planet before forcing myself to move on, and I'm sure I didn't come close to finding everything there was to be found.

There is a ton of lore spread about though. This gives you more insight into the prevalent alien species that is about. The language mechanic, while annoying in some aspects, does give a nice push to continue exploring to find the hidden knowledge portals, and a good way to help interactions as you become tied more with a specific species.

There's also what appears to be a ton of free-form "quests" that pop up. Say, you're in space and you see a trade convoy being attacked. You can join the pirates or the convoy. If you choose to join the convoy ships and protect them, you'll have a small free-form quest/task pop up after you start attacking giving you what needs to be done (i.e. how many attackers are left).

There are of course down sides...

    * The PS4 still has very noticeable pop in during terrain generation (hopefully this is greatly reduced, or gone, on PC)
    * If you're looking for it, you can start to see the different parts that make up the creatures
    * Creature animations don't always work 100% for the creature type
    * To much information in the free-form task/quests
    * You will be doing the same thing constantly

The first three are more technical, and in general art, than anything else and could possibly be fixed over time, the fourth is a personal opinion, so I'll focus on the last of my personal down sides...

"You will be doing the same thing constantly"

The main game play loop is basically: Explore, Mine, Upgrade, Move on

That's it. That is the whole game in a nut shell. If doing that basic game play on procedurally generated worlds doesn't sound interesting to you, then I'd stay away from this game. It probably isn't what you're looking for.

If it does sound interesting, then I would most definitely suggest checking the game out. So far, in the probably over 20 hours I've played since release, this has met, and exceeded, the expectation I had for it. Being I'm still on my 2nd system, I can see my self spending a huge amount of hours in this game over time.

This is honestly, the type of game I've been waiting on. I'm sure I'll get bored of it eventually, lose interest, or the next new shiny will come out, but as of this point in time, this is a great game if you didn't have unrealistic expectations about what it would be.

I could write down whole paragraphs of what No Man's Sky is lacking, or even doing wrong, but that would be pointless as it would still deserve a 9. Why that, might you ask... For a simple reason : no game is even remotely close to what this game achieves. The only pieces of software that accomplish only parts of No Man's sky are titles like Space Engine, Starbound, Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress.

No Man's sky is a huge step forward in the direction of the game we all dream of : a huge fresh world to explore.

That being said, the game in itself is really good.

First, very moody : music and design come together to immerse you in alien nature. It can be really gorgeous, if you forgive its rough edges.

Gameplay speaking, there is always a feeling of rushing forward that I find extremely enjoyable, even when painstakingly scavenging ressources. Why not leave this planet you just began exploring ? Why not fly to the next ? Unlike other scripted games where you're tempted to look into every corner of every room in search for the littlest power up or secret, in No Man's Sky the world is so vast that you can choose what to explore and what to skip.

To sum it up, I think despite its shortcomings, this game is so unique it really stands out. Nothing is like it. I can't wait to play it again.

No Man's Sky was, unfortunately, bound to disappoint certain players. After nearly 4 years of hype, this small development team ultimately had to answer to expectations which were not properly checked.

At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration and survival game. Most of the story is implicit, something sorely lacking in modern gaming, and which is in this case, gracefully executed. You begin with a crashed vessel, which you must repair before taking off into space, and the story is told through your inevitable desire to survive, to analyze.

There is NO handholding in No Man's Sky, again, a refreshing deviation from AAA gaming in 2016.

Exploration is done gradually, usually incentivized by the discovery of a faraway marker, or alien "monolith". Through these discoveries, you learn the languages of the various races of the universe, making it easier to communicate with them, understand their requests, and solve their racial puzzles.

There will be some combat during your journey, either against space pirates, or the "space police" which monitors your acquisitions from a planet. More diverse fauna and flora means tighter policing, an interesting nod to real-world preservation techniques. Yet combat takes a hard back seat in this game, and players should be aware of this.

There are some drawbacks in the early hours, to this exploration mechanic. The lack of inventory space early on means you'll often have to make return trips to Outposts in order to acquire that which you ultimately really need. But the system taunts you with bigger ships, more space, and in that sense your gradual assent from young explorer to inter-galactic merchant is rewarding, if not often steep.

Ultimately this is an ode to discovery, a relaxing intergalactic journey where the acquisition of resources is meant to take up most of your attention, not hi-speed chase sequences out of the Star Trek universe.

Now, I've only played about 6 hours total and yes I could see where the novelty won't last forever but I'm having fun and still have lots to try. I actually like the alien lore stuff and the language discovery. Sure I want more variety in planets and life forms but honestly I'll bet that comes in patches and DLC later.

It compares most directly with Elite Dangerous. That game is ultra-realistic in flight, but you can't really do anything interesting on planet surfaces. NMS has arcade-like flight but you can land and walk around. Both games are good in their own way, but even if the two developers combined their experiences it still wouldn't be for everyone. If this isn't your type of game, just don't play it.

I rate a game's value based on the cost divided by the number of hours I enjoy playing it. A theatrical movie costs about $12 and I get 2 hours of enjoyment so that's $6/hr. I'm just scratching the surface on NMS and my $60 @ 6 hours has cost me roughly $10/hr so far. By the time it gets old it'll probably be pennies an hour, so in my book that's a "good deal".

I will say this is exactly why review embargoes are a BAD idea. With a highly hyped game it encourages SOME people to get the game sight-unseen and then hate it and rant. If reviewers had received their copies a couple of weeks ago they could have published reviews explaining that it IS a resource gathering game and that the gameplay is simplistic compared to something like Elite. Then people who aren't into that sort of thing could have decided it wasn't worth their money. As this was handled though, a lot of people are going to feel burned (thus the review backlash).

No Man's Sky is a lonely game. To me, that's what makes it so brilliant.

There's no multiplayer in No Man's Sky. The universe you'll get to explore is truly universe-sized, which means the odds of running into another player are practically slim to none. There are creatures that roam the planets, but your presence is largely inconsequential to them, as it is the ecosystem as a whole.

There are creatures that roam the planets, but your presence is largely inconsequential to them, as it is the ecosystem as a whole. The various alien NPCs you'll occasionally encounter speak in languages that, at least initially, are impossible to understand. You have to survive on your own. There's no map to tell you where you are, and nobody will come to rescue you if you get lost. You're completely alone. And if the thought of any of this unnerves you, then this may not be the game for you.

But there's something amazing about being alone in this universe that Hello Games has created. Personally, I find it amazing that the planets I've discovered and the species I've encountered have never been seen by any other player. There's something almost trance-like about flying your spaceship over a mysterious new world, finding a spot to land, and trekking through caves and valleys in search of your next adventure. While some may be disappointed in the lack of base-building (and an overall lack of high-level interactivity with the world,) I find that this actually helps with immersion. You are a stranger in this universe, and your only place of refuge is your ship. It's your only lifeline; it's your shelter during a massive dust storm, your escape plan when you're outnumbered and outgunned, and your only true companion on your journey to discover just what lies in the center of the universe.

And while the trek to the center is the ultimate goal of the game, there's no narrative to tie you to that. If you want, you can spend all your time exploring without any purpose at all. At the beginning of the game, you are offered a choice--would you like occasional objective markers to help guide you through your journey? Or would you like to abandon all guidance and find your own way? The latter option makes the opening hours of the game much more difficult, as you must figure out how to repair your craft and venture out of the solar system on your own. But for players who want to take their time and avoid any hand holding (of which there is very little in the first place,) the option is there.

The gameplay ultimately boils down to mining for resources to keep you alive and upgrade your craft so you can continue further and further into the universe. Each planet has it's own ecosystem, making certain elements difficult to come by in certain areas, which ups the stakes and encourages preparation. Do I have enough fuel to venture to this new planet? What will I encounter when I get there? If it's barren, will I have enough fuel to liftoff again? Maybe it's a lush planet--perhaps I should stop at this space station and trade some of my goods afterwards. Is my suit capable of keeping me warm once night falls on this frozen planet?

In addition to all of that, this is a game about discovering the lore of the universe. While there isn't much of a traditional narrative, bits and pieces of history and inklings of alien languages can be discovered at mysterious structures dotted around the universe. That's all I'll get into about that, to prevent heavy spoilers.

It helps that the presentation is absolutely jaw-dropping. Every randomly-generated galaxy, planet, cavern, ocean, forest, and animal shares a high-contrast, highly color-saturated design that never gets old. I've visited about 10 planets so far, and all of them have been beautiful in their own right. One planet I visited was full of snow-tipped mountaintops that glimmered in the light of the setting sun. Another was almost completely barren, yet there was something beautifully haunting about it's mysterious purple surface that spurred me to investigate. The soundtrack also deserves special mention--it's a moody and contemplative score that ups the ante at just the right moments. It hasn't grown stale and adds an immense amount of atmosphere to an already incredible game. And of course, if you don't like it, you can always turn it off, or opt to listen to your own music (on PS4 via Spotify) instead.

The only things that didn't wow me were the lack of variation in planetary outposts, as well as the less-than-stellar design of some of the NPC Aliens you speak and trade with at these outposts. But considering the massive scale of this game and the high level of quality throughout, these are relatively minor issues.

No Man's Sky is a game about you, your starship, and the universe. It's a game about discovery, atmosphere and immersion. It's unlike anything I've ever played before. If you want to take a break from the fast paced AAA shooters and lose yourself in a gorgeous, essentially endless universe, you'll be hard pressed to do better than No Man's Sky.

A great game for anyone that likes open world freedom to explore and discover things and follow leads to objectives, but if you are the kind of person that wants everything handed to you and explained in a simplified linear style story this is not for you. For me though this is a great game that is only going to improve with the updates that are coming

Good luck travelers on your journey of convergence to the center. If you are a fan of science fiction, and are looking for a Space Exploration simulator that is lighthearted with a sense of wonder and hope. No Man's Sky is the game for you.

The slightly skewed reviews that some of these people are leaving makes you just want to shake your head in disbelief. Read all the 0 and 10 reviews. Makes me want to vomit. No This game is not a 10. No this game is not a 0. Its not a 3 or 4 or even a 5. The game is a Solid 7 and half, 8 or 9 in my opinion. And just to sway the critics I am going to give it a 9. Here is my reasoning.

    First starting with negatives:
Yes the game was largely over-hyped. Yes the combat is pretty basic. Yes there is no story or its hidden within the game and I need to learn the language to uncover it. The movement kind of is slow when on foot.

Now lets move to the positives.
But once you get into your spaceship and can fly from place to place, it gets much better. Your spaceship is your home, kind of. So be sure you don't go too far from it. You store everything there, once your suit runs out, and it helps you find Alien Artifacts, Trade Outposts to buy new Ships, and just helps you travel Space and Explore.

No Man's Sky is actually quite enjoyable. Once I got through slight learning curve in the first few hours. Flying from one point to another. Naming different animals, which are surprisingly well animated and have different behaviors and vary largely in size and color. I met this huge animal of about 15 feet long thing that looked like a Lion with a Cone head that was amazing. I took many pictures and videos of it, and sent them to my friends. The thing was freaking huge, and I gave it good it then it was happy and started to follow me around. So real, it felt real. I felt as if I was there.

The game world is very ascetically pleasing. And I must stress this, the world in a word is beautiful. The Space is also quite pleasing to the eye. This is not a realistic space sim. This game is a story book space sim. Like traveling to another Universe, sort of. And exploring it is truly a Unique experience unlike any I ever experienced in any game.

From the start. What I did was I spent 12 hours on the first planet to make sure I got everything catalogued before moving on to the next planet. To the people saying each planet environment is not varied are truly wrong. My first starting planet had mountains, peeks, valleys, grass, different colored sky. I named my first planet Ferdinand 1, and my Solar System Magellan after the famous explorer. I plan to name all the planets I see after famous explorers and ships of history. The next planet I named Isabella after the Spanish monarch. But back to Ferdinand 1. Ferdinand 1 And it was the kind of place I would want to spend many years in. I cannot figure out how they made the game world look so unique.

Props to the development team on this game. Just ignore the negative and reviews and focus on the positive. The game needs some work, but I am sure future updates will add many requested features.far as just what we have at launch, its an extremely playable and enjoyable experience.

Two things I would fix are the interface, and the movement. Maybe add some land vehicles. Walking and flying shouldn't be the only ways to travel. Some type of Land rover or car would be great.

This is kind of a first impression review as I only have spent maybe 12 hours in the game, so as I play more of it, I am sure I will discover things such as learning Alien language. The mystery of the Atlas. And try to get to the center of the Universe, but right now I am just too busy exploring my own Solar System, before I even think about going further.

Good luck travelers, and don't let these 0 star reviews get you down. They are wrong, or people who did not even play the game. Or the type of people that play a game till end, and return it. If you are that type of player, that is looking for a story driven game, stay away from it. If you are looking for an enjoyable game you can play for many days, months, maybe even years and like Science Fiction. Then this game is for you.

Even though the graphics are a bit dated, the beauty of the environments overshadows the graphics and just makes you want to explore and find new things. The first hour was tough, but once I figured out the mechanics. I think this game will hold me off for a long time.

Now, for a few years to be honest almost no game has kept me engaged for more than a couple of hours, then I get bored and drop it, I am not what you would call a "serious" gamer (although I do end up with quite a large collection).
Second disclaimer, I own an Xbox One, it is my family system, we all use it, I bough a PS4 recently because I want to try out PSVR when released and I got it very cheap, not with any game in mind (except maybe Battlefield 1 later in the year). The PS4 is hooked up to a large monitor and no one else uses it, just me.
So, finally, to the game, as I said, pretty much first PS4 game, not hyped much, but then I start seeing lots of negative reviews around and I though, you know what ? ,I am sure this game does not deserve these reviews, I know Devs have worked very hard on it and should get some unbiased reviews that don't come from fanboys (PS4 or XBO).
I got the game from PS Store (deserves another review, how is it possible that the same credit card I JUST used to pay Playstation Plus now is not valid ?), installed fairly quickly, reported size is even less than what I had been reading (3.6GB I believe was the download).
I started the game in a random planet, did not see much of interest, walked around a bit, got attacked by bunch of animals, started getting bored, fixed the ship and took off.
Space Station helped me build hyper-drive, so I started planet hopping, I have been following clues, I am hooked on the "ruins" thing, but I also know now how to be efficient with resources, I basically spend most of the time jumping back to or looking for new planets with gold, once I figured out what to look for I fill up my ship with gold and take off, I am able to get huge amounts of credits by trading it and buy everything I need (I would say I have pretty much become a trader).

Is everything good ?, absolutely no:
I have seen the issues, fish swimming in one inch water, a ruin located 1 mile underwater, clearly related to random generation, potentially fixable. I have also had crashes, twice, I do not like that (and the reason I took 1 point from the score), this should not happen at all in a controlled environment like PS4, also, I am sure, quite possible to patch.
I do not like that I have 2 "trading" menus instead of 1 to buy/sell, also that I can only trade my exosuit content, that's a minor annoyance.
Opposite to many of the other reviews I have walked quite far form my ship and there IS always a marker that shows you the way back, I guess it can be a bit trickier to find if you are underground, but I have never lost my ship nor do I see how you could at all.
Still could not get the atlas pass, not that I have focused much effort on it.
I wish I could get (maybe later in the game) some sort of bot built that will continue mining for me, even if I have to return to orbit to pick up the resources, even if the bot took a slot in my ship I think it would still be worth it.
I would like to see some sort of multiplayer added, if I do happen to find other players I would like to be able to interact with them better (trade, maybe travel together from that point, even if fighting is not an option I would not mind that terribly)

I like the atmosphere overall, I like the music, It has kept me engaged for longer than any other game I can remember since God Of War 3 (I really think I have only spent more time in CIV right now).
Maybe the fact that I did not have a PS4 and I did not get over-hyped helped, but I am truly enjoying the game and I hope devs will continue supporting it, adding content, etc.
Others have focused in the resource gathering aspects, I have found it be easier to manage than other games I have played, and not so boring.
Graphics are interesting, I like the palette, quality is adequate, better than you would get on an MMORPG, but not photo-realistic, you should not get the game if high-end graphics are key to your gaming experience.
I have heard some complains about FOV, I think it's fine, but I also notice the PS4 struggles sometimes to render everything as I fly over.
It seems the price was another pain point, it was not for me, not because I have a lot of money, I do not, but the fact is I don't buy that many games, and as I said, other games do not keep me that engaged, so in the end if I have invested 50 or 60 dollars in a game and it only keeps me entertained for 10 hours I have wasted the money, on the other hand this game, I can see putting in a lot more hours (I am sure I am well over 30 hours already), so, in my case, I am fine with the price.
I do suggest if you are on the edge that you wait, I am quite sure price will drop in a couple of months and I do not think starting first will give other players any kind of insurmountable advantage

Overall, fun game, interesting, great looking, I am quite happy with it :)

Visuals, music, auto-generated whatsits- all marvellous (reminds me of Halo). I even like the inventory and resource management design (reminds me of Metal Arms). Only get this if you understand that exciting games can also be relaxing.

From discovering new planets and crafting designs to learning new alien languages and finding your way to complete your goal of reaching the centre of the galaxy.

The game can feel slow and distant, it can feel a little empty - but isn't that what space is?

After about 30 hours of gameplay, my current goal is saving up 14 million units to buy a new ship, and also save up enough aluminum to build a hyperdrive upgrade. Then I'll start heading for the core again, or perhaps another Atlas space station. So many choices. I'll decide when I get back to the game.

It'll be interesting to see what building bases and trading ships will add to the gameplay once that update is released.

They are all valid in my opinion. My personal opinion is I love this game. I love this tech demo, whatever you want to call it. I am enjoying it very much.

But of all the comment themes the "not what i expected" theme is killing me hard. We all saw game play and we all read about the game prior to release. I have seen people complain about the repetitive nature of the game and the lackluster "OTHER" mechanics like weapon game play or the survival aspect. But for all of you who have not played the game yet and are considering getting it, just consider the expectations you have of the game and THEN ASK YOURSELF WHY YOU EXPECT that?

This game is not a FPS...so why would someone expect evolved weapon mechanics or even better game play with respect to that?

This game is repetitive in the sense all games are repetitive. The quadrillion planets "not being different enough" is kind of rooted in reality. This game takes on something that actually mimics the size of a universe. And people want the 18 quadrillion planets to be more different than they are now? Can anyone even name 18 quadrillion UNIQUE aspects of a planet that would be noticeable in a game. You roll dice, your going to get the same outcome sometimes....its probability,

So that this doesnt get too long, its an awesome experience, and dont expect things in this game that have no basis to be expected. Dont expect massive MMO action, where you getting that from? Dont expect DayZ survival, why would you? Dont expect a quadrillion styles of ship or weapons....was that promised? Do not expect anything. Take it with a blank slate and you will be glad you experienced it.

To those complaining about the repetitive nature of the game-play: that comes with the territory of a procedurally generated games. It's simply impossible to create a game that builds itself without repeating elements - you're necessarily trading attention to detail for scale. This same issue is present in every other procedurally generated game out there, from the old-school roguelikes up through Elite, Binding of Isaac, and recently Necropolis. For some reason, NMS is catching this criticism much more-so than other procedural games, perhaps because many would-be NMS players were attracted by the hype and hadn't had much experience with proc

My issues with the trending outlook on the game is the increasingly common use of 'it's boring' or 'there's not enough to do!'. Thing is, for some gamers the same criticism can be leveled at the likes of Overwatch, Hearthstone, Rainbow Six to name a few. Now I'm not saying these games are bad, they serve a purpose for the people that like that sort of thing however if you don't...then the enjoyment you'll get out of those games is slim pickings.

That's my reasoning for the high score I'm giving No Man's Sky. I had no pretence or hype train tooting going into this game and frankly the main thing that drew me in was the soundtrack. Having sat down and played it though I can attest to exactly who this game speaks to and why some of its limitations are okay.

Having played the game with someone who is somewhat 'casual' when it comes to gaming the first thing that struck them was the ability to explore and craft things (however limited you might suggest those mechanics are) without the imminent threat of being tea bagged by enemies and having to learn and be good at whatever combat mechanics are in the game in order to compitently survive. For some people that's all they really want from certain games.

I fail to understand why it's kind okay for certain genres to be unmistakably niche and be reveld in because of their 'gameplay mechanics' however when something comes along which is perfect as a chill out game or something just to enjoy for what it is.

The mechanics might be repetative for some but for other's it's therapautic and satisfying. The way some people have been carrying on seems outright unprofessional.

In short, go into this game looking for a chilled out experience which can be quite eye opening and fun if you let it be.

I am already 20 hours in and i haven't reach a little bit of the main quest besides there's a lot to do, there's a lot of lore like in other games like the souls series, the alien razes are unique, i would like more but there are unique in their own way, learn different languages is a grind on itself and it's really easy to lose time only doing that, the crafting works very well, obviously the planets sometimes feel the same because whe need some basic materials to be on every planet we go, like the carbon and plutonium. I would love that they make multiplayer making the game even more fun but i can live without it. The reactions the critics and the public are having against this game are because they hype the game as they shouldn't have, all the trailers show exactly what we where going to, so if you bought the game and are dissapointed because it wasn't what you expecting because of hoy hype it was, wit all respect you are an idiot and should feel shame for talking about this game, it's not perfect but it isn't bad at all, it is easiy the best game of this year and how Sean said this game is divisive and we are seeing that, he never lied, the only thing the game needs is a little bit of polish with some patches.

But that's on Sony, not the devs. For those of us that followed this game closely from the start, we knew what we were getting ourselves into. Other people did not. That's why these reviews are so mixed. For what it's worth, I am absolutely hooked. Any game I can play for 20 hours and still be just as interested in as I was from the start is well worth my $60. Be smart with your money and really understand what this game is before you buy it. If the core gameplay and experience sounds like something you'll like and you're willing to put the time into it to learn how everything works, you'll be rewarded and satisfied. One of my favorites of the year. Expand

The algorithmically generated planets are alien in the truest sense. I have a profound sense that I am alone and that I am walking a very dangerous path. Dashing to caverns for shelter during snow storms, fighting off angry sentinels and desperately seeking materials I need. All of this in a world smeared with jaw-dropping colors and gorgeous sound design.

For some of us, 'No Man's Sky' just clicks... like crazy... like a geiger counter. I love this game. My advise is this, don't let a critic with his own set of likes and dislikes tell you something isn't worth your time. You could wind up missing out on a very profound personal experience.

Since release Hello Games have been constantly updating and working hard polishing, refining and improving No Mans Sky. There is so much content there that it really does keep giving.

If you want to explore the stars and see what is out there you may like me find this game enchanting. Initially there are some challenges, surviving on early harsh planets, constantly finding required materials but as you develop your suit, your ship and your understanding you will reap the benefit of not feeling desperately tied to a grind and can really enjoy seeing what you find. Setting yourself goals of making money, improving your suit, upgrading or replacing your ship, getting your own freighter, building your own fleet, finding weird and wonderful planets or systems then sertling within one on your own base either alone or with friends. There is a lot to do and enjoy here. If you are a player that needs a clean narrative to follow there are story missions to follow but these are quite light and not enough for me to recommend this game to you. If everything I have mentioned appeals to you, you like me may really enjoy this game. I’ve played around 170 hours across 2 saves ( one solo and one multiplayer so I wasn’t too far ahead of a new joining friend when multiplayer was released)

The biggest thing for me, causing me to rate this an 8 is that it is a truly unique game, unlike anything else I’ve played. And that for me is deserving of recognition.

This game is exactly what I thought it would be. An interesting space exploration game. I love it for being just that, and I feel like that's how the developers pitched it. If you go into No Man's Sky expecting any more than that, you may be disappointed.

Long story short: If you love exploring, try this game out. If you are looking for action, you should probably pass on No Man's Sky.

I only played around two hours from the game so this review is rough but I will be addressing combat, story elements, and exploration/space.

First off the combat is good. It does remind me a bit of Fallout. I was only able to fight with the mining tool. At first there was some difficulty aiming but after fighting several drones I got the hang of it. I found some alien pods. Inside I found a weapon on the shelf which was fairly expensive. At this point I was only 30 minutes in and I already found a new weapon which I was very curious as to how it shoots and it's power. This alone gave me the desire to find more guns and to upgrade them. Some crates that I plundered gave me some upgrades to my mining gun. One of the upgrades made my mining gun stronger which is awesome to see. It was not hard to make and it was fun seeing the added power to the mining gun. Your suit is also a key component to the combat in No Man's Sky. Early on I fought many police drones because I did mine that one cave a little too much. But all in all, I felt like I was given too much health. I was taking many hits at the beginning and I was barely at half health. Scaling of health and health upgrades should be changed for the better without a doubt. But like the upgrades for the mining tool, I appreciate the upgrades that can be used on your suit and their effects on combat. Mixing the crafting component with upgrades for the combat aspect of the game is done very well. It makes me want to upgrade more and to test out my gear in battles.

Now on to story elements. This is where the game excels in my opinion. At the very beginning of the game I was given three options when I approached this technology I found. I honestly felt like my choice really made a difference for the story I was playing. And making more decisions like this from objects gives No Man's Sky its RPG edge. I met my first alien near the beginning of the game in one of the alien pods. The alien and I talked, granted I did not know what he was saying, and I was given three options. One of them was to pet, another to feed, and the last was to give credits. Of course I chose to give the alien credits because I do not know their customs and what is appropriate for their race. And on top of that, money talks. The alien was very pleased which made me very happy. I felt like I was one step closer to this unknown alien race. The progression of story on this alien race soon became an important goal for me to attain.

Lastly, I felt like No Man's Sky's exploration and space is slightly a double edged sword. But still I love it. The game is huge and I am definitely one of those guys who loves to explore every point of interest. In fact I will even double check places just to make sure I have everything. Once I started playing I instantly fell in love with it. I was like a boy at the candy shop. It was exhilarating to discover new rocks and plants to mine with my mining gun. At one point I needed a lot of one type of mineral and I mined for about 10 minutes straight. I can see how this can get tiring for majority of players. It was not really for me because I am totally fine with doing monotonous tasks. So with this I am not going to judge whether this is something the game needs to fix because it is depends on the player. And also, if a player should have any problem with doing a task over and over, they could just upgrade their gear so mining can go even faster. I did this and I was appreciative of the upgrade. And here is the thing about mining for so long and gathering materials; it takes up a lot of space. And no I do not mean the space that is galaxies upon galaxies. I am talking about inventory. At the beginning this was a struggle to deal with. I had to constantly go back into inventory and either craft or throw material out. Good thing is that I did not have to throw out many materials because a lot of things in my inventory had a use. For instance my suit needed certain minerals while my mining tool needed other minerals to repair it. Nevertheless, it was still a hassle to deal with. What I do applaud No Man's Sky when it comes to inventory is the sections of inventory. Your ship, your suit and your mining tool all can carry materials. This was helpful and made sense. For instance, whenever my ship thrusters needed repairing I would repair it with minerals found in my ship's inventory and not my mining tool's inventory. It made sense that transferring things from my ship all the way to my suit would not work if the distance was too far.

In conclusion, the combat is good, the story elements are exceptional, and the exploration/space is still a bit rough. I loved the game and I am very thankful that my friend was able to let me test it out. I will without doubt buy the game whenever I get the chance. I am also excited for new updates that will enhance the game further. Never before have I wanted to explore a planet so thoroughly along with the vast No Man's Sky universe.

I can't believe the negative reviews for this game...but I think many gamers (especially young ones) expect every game to be released exactly how they want it. This is wrong, and if you followed the game over the last year or so, you would have not been disappointed.

The game is exactly what it is supposed to be...and many of the complaints are because of the repetitive grind (for resources and storage slots). While I could have done without the grind for resources, this is typical of many games. So what...grind through the first 10-15 hours, then start exploring the rarer planets (green, red, and blue)! I gave it a 9 simply because I think the grind was too long...people just want to get out there and play the game, not sit on the hedonic treadmill of gather/upgrade for the first part of the game.

I do think Sean would have been better off not adding the different color planets and required warp drives because people would not have had to grind, but I'm glad to now be able to go directly to more appealing planets. :)

Space combat isn't bad...once you upgrade your ship!
Sentinels are varied and make gathering much more interesting that most games out there...
Resource gathering is MUCH faster than some games I've played (Minecraft, WoW, SWG, etc.)

I love the fact that once you do the grind to obtain the basics...you're set! Now you can get on to do what the game is truly about: exploration and survival!

Sure, they did try to market the game with combat and trading...and these do exist...just as they do in many other games. Nothing new here, and I think that's one reason people are dissapointed. They wanted some new combat and trading...and while crafting and trading could be improved upon possibly...(some games have added small additions to make it more fun), who would ever really want to play a game to trade? It's trading...quite boring in any game!

Fighting can be fun...but this isn't an FPS game! The combat is basic, but meets the requirements (shoot, sprint, jetpack/jump, kill, and blow stuff up). Were people expecting some new FPS? If they were...why? Did they follow this game at all?

Exploration is fun! If you like to explore, then it will be a fun game once you get past the grind to upgrade. Just when I think I've seen the same old stuff...I find a new planet that looks very different. Still sci-fi with the similar color pallets, but awesome!

I loved exploring minecraft worlds...and I LOVE exploring No Mans Sky!

If you think of the technical achievement with this game...it is outstanding! Minecraft graphics are horrible and it runs like crap using Java, but people love it. No Mans Sky is similar because while it may not be a AAA title with thousands of people working on it, the small team has pushed the limits to produce a beautiful procedural game.

Just think...10 years from now the graphics capabilities will catch up (hard to render all that stuff on the fly...the PS4 and fastest PC can't keep up if you cranked up the graphics!) and we will be playing procedurally generated games like skyrim, COD, Minecraft, etc. but they will look awesome too!

I will play COD again if they create a version with procedural generated maps...every round will be a new, unique game without the campers, nade spammers, etc.

The repetitive side isn't a problem since there are so many ways to evolve in this almost infinite universe. You feel lonely, right, but that's exactly the point : you probably are the only human in a remote corner of the galaxy, surrounded by aliens that you don't understand.
The immersion is incredible for those who can appreciate that, for those who doesn't want action everywhere, scenario guidance, for wanderers.
Still, the game needs some improvement. Ergonomic like marking a location, having aliens walking in space stations, and esthetics's like having a solid solar system with ... a sun, space events like asteroids belt, and more interactive fauna like in the trailer. It could also be fun to see species already discovered on other planets. But these details don't mess the game.
So, before buying this game, think twice to the kind of player you are. If you recognize yourself in what's written above, don't hesitate. If not, just never buy it.

My back ground is in Computer Science and Philosophy and I'm also an avid student of science so I am sympathetic to this game and I can easily get lost in it. I really appreciate the technology here as what Hello Games has done will have a profound impact on the future of video gaming forever. Hello Games have delegated some of the responsibility of game design to algorithms. Not an original concept, but damn, it's the size of a universe. As some one familiar with computer programs, I'm amazed this game even works, let alone provide a gaming experience of any kind. I do agree this game was over hyped, and is not quite what anyone thought it would be; but for the love of Zeus, it's only a team of 13 people! So far, many believe this game lacks depth and is way too tedious. I can certainly see that and this game is not for everyone or even the majority of people. I feel that if you have a scientific mind, then you will appreciate this game(but that is not a requirement for enjoyment). The wonder of discovery, the awe-inspiring moments, and the challenge to try to come to grips with the enormity of the universe is why I love No Man's Sky. It accomplishes what good Science Fiction does, inspire future discoveries and innovation. It is overpriced for what it offers considering what the majority of people want from a video game, but it is worth it for me. A game with a deep story, great combat, graphics conducive to immersion, and choices that truly matter is something I and many other gamers adore and crave. This game doesn't nail all of that and I understand the feeling of hollowness people feel about this game. They want more. That is a feeling I can respect. Play his game casually, in the dark, with some good quality headphones (if you can) and you may appreciate it more. I also love sharing what I find with my friends, but I suppose good friends can make anything fun. However, it provides the feeling of being a explorer, which is one of the beautiful parts of being a human and a trait that was once celebrated in America. This game is a bit ahead of the curve in some areas but does fall short in others. I am excited to see what else they add to the game and what other games are going to be like that are inspired by this one. No Man's Sky will contribute a lot to the video game industry and the scientific community as a whole. It is not only a game, it is a computer generated experiment and the users are the observers. For now, I am content to spend a few hours every now and then exploring a universe sized game. It's great therapy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has very much redeemed it's self. with the beta tests of the update NEXT having amazing reviews and critics calling it the spiritual awakening or the Galactic Sized Come Back, the game is here to stay, gone with the bugs and here with the revolution of gaming.

The first update titled "The Foundation Update" brought a new game mode, base-building, the ability to grow plants and products, automation, etc

The second update called, "The Pathfinder update" gave us 4k graphics, 3 new land vehicles, an ARG, increased base building mechanics, more game modes and updated procedural software.

The third update was the 1st reviver getting people to come back, this was "Atlas Rises". With 30 hrs of great story, more procedural software updates, graphical updates, another game mode, (a somewhat bare bones) Multiplayer, more base building mechanics, ability to buy freighters and big ships, the ability to own 6 smaller ships at a time in your freighter, ship combat, and also flight combat and landing controls were also updated.

And finally the Big Daddy of all the updates and game saver of the century, "NEXT", while inconclusive and only going off well-known, hardcore, critic and beta tester accounts, the game seems to be saved completely from the trash can. Next has been confirmed to have, Ringed planets, more story, third-person view, multiplayer models, buy-able corvettes and frigates, COMPLETELY amazing and OVERHAULED graphics, factions, PVP, Playable races, amazing add-ons to base-building, gravitational physics, Overhauled procedural codes, Racetrack building and the ability to share them, updated resources, ability to command a fleet of ships and a restraint on universal currency so it doesn't become inflatable as easily. And i haven't even got into the stuff speculated by the new trailer.

This game is here to stay. Sean Murray never gave us promises and we struggle to grasp that. i myself gave a review of 4 before, ripping the game apart, but now the game we WANTED(and not promised) is finally here. we should all be happy it is and hope for it's continued progress to be as successful as the past updates.

Final Comparison: EVE/Elite Dangerous/Minecraft, i struggled to compare this game to anything but EVE and Elite Dangerous with more exploration and the infinite possibilities of Minecraft.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In 2016, I, like many, pre-ordered and played No Man's Sky at launch and we were all let down by what we had, but in 2022 with all these free updates (I think that should be known since most of the AAA games and these cherished companies don't even do that), this might be the greatest gaming comeback in history. Bare with me but this is only a fraction of what you can do with these updates.
    You can:

Own alien pets, play with your friends online, customize your character, be the leader of your own settlement and make tough decisions, defend that settlement from sentinels and space pirates who want to take your resources, build your own bases anywhere, drive vehicles on land and submarines underwater, go into scary abandoned freighters and fight hostile aliens, own your own freighter and frigates, own multiple ships, guns, and multitools (aka guns and mining tools), discover multiple planet biomes, plant alien like plants that can earn you a lot of units (The main currency of the game), take part in missions, embark on some interesting text story missions, have your own AI squadron to journey with you and fight rebel space pirates, etc.

They have delivered and more with these updates to bring us what they initially promised us at launch and I say it is time to appreciate companies like them for their hard work and how they didn't give up and owned up to their mistakes. It shows that how you act when you make a mistake is way more important than the mistake itself, because people will remember that more.I give this a 9/10 for what No Man's Sky is NOW, not for what it was in 2016 and I think many should try to move on from those times after more than 5 years have gone by. Cheers to you Murray and Hello Games, and God Bless you for your redemption and hard work.

You can't expect Mass Effect as awesome as that would be. It's kinda like comparing a comedy to a marital arts film and then complainig that the martial arts film wasn't funny enuff, altho it would be really awesome if it was funny too. I say all of that to say I understand why so many people are disappointed, but I gave it an 8/10 partly to counteract the hate and because after 8 hours I still like it. To be fair it's repetitive, but there are still ALOT of things I havent seen. The beauty of this game maybe just to see how many different thing this computer generated game can come up with. It may get Super weird, who knows!I like the controls they're not overly complicated like other space sims. I like that there is life of some sort which is also lacking in other sims. I like the abandoned compound which are also not present in other sims. I like the language aspect and that there are special things to discover beyond the flora and fauna like crashed ships and obelisks which again is lacking in other sims. So I'll play til I get to the center or until it gets boring cus I just want to see where it goes and I'm having a good time(so far)getting there.

No Man's Sky is about EXPLORATION, not shooting enemies. Are there enemies to shoot? Yeah, I've landed on two planets that have highly predatory species that want nothing but my blood on their jaws and even trying to get the fuel for my spaceship becomes a fight for survival, which is what the other part of this game is, surviving.

The two things you do in the game are explore and survive. Surviving requires finding materials to power your various space things. Your mining laser, your ship's three different engine types, your suit shield and environmental protection (which keeps you from dying when the planet is freezing or burning hot or has toxic rains). If that sounds boring to you, don't get the game. Other than those things there's nothing here, unless you're interested in finding minerals to sell to the computer for money, which is no different than pretending to be a trader in any of the most recent Fallout games. Basically, you have to either be very interested in looking at the different scenery on each planet, or be willing to, god forbid, actually role play with your game. You're either here for the view, or you're taking off and pretending you're a space captain or a bounty hunter, or a trader, and that's what it'll be, pretend. There's no class, no job, nothing. But it's fun, it's the most simplistic version of fun that gamers have lost with games providing hallway simulators that have story, or an open world with a paper script. Exploration for the sake of exploration is fun.

Now, I will concede issues. The planets aren't all that varied, but they're not varied in the same way they were in Star Wars. Here's a desert, here's a water planet, here's a jungle, etc. Sometimes they mix. I landed on a tropical planet that gave way to ocean and some dotted islands which really stood out from the jungle behind me. But once you see a few you do get the idea that the game is just going to stitch together existing biomes from Earth. The animals you encounter are likewise just kind of slapped together pieces, but sometimes the pieces slap together in interesting ways. One planet I saw had dinosaurs with bug faces and claws. Nightmare fuel for days.

The biggest problem I keep reading about though that I have to address, is the inventory "issue" people have. Which ... I don't get. Your suit powers run off of things like titanium or zinc, your energy weapons and engines run off plutonium. You can get titanium by killing this little eyeball robots (which is easy as the game has an aggressive auto aim), and plutonium is on every planet in the solar system as big red crystals. I keep four slots, two for titanium two for plutonium, and I never run out. That leaves me with 9 spaces for stuff in my ship and currently 8 spaces for stuff on my character. There's no inventory management going on, it's just keeping a slot open for minerals that are literally everywhere. If I had one complaint about the game it would be that surviving is TOO EASY. The only time I felt even marginally threatened was the planet where everything wanted to kill me, and I have a GUN to shoot the alien squirrels with so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Overall, this game is fun where it is but I can see a lot of potential in the future if the game can be made challenging. At the moment it's a lot of flying around and looking at things and you have to be interested in seeing those things and being immersed in the game. If you're looking to shoot stuff but still want space try Rebel Galaxy or Free Space, those are probably more your taste. If you want to land on an alien world and look at things and go, "What the hell?" play No Man's Sky.

Like most, I started the game with the hopes that at some point I'd run into other players, despite the odds. That upon reaching the center of the Galaxy (which I have yet to do) a community would be waiting for me. Unfortunately, no two players can ever see each other - not even if they're standing right next to each other (it's been tested and recorded). The only thing that links players together is their discoveries and the ridiculously stupid/clever things they name them.

The game is whatever you want to make of it. You have a whole universe to explore - one that can never be seen in its entirety. You can play along with the vague story the game provides or you can do your own thing. Abandon yourself upon a planet and survive, fly endlessly towards a star (I did this for hours and never seemed to get any closer), fight the Sentinels and see what crazy big backup they call in, go on a quest for power and get all the best upgrades, attempt killing off an entire planet (probably not possible), search out space battles, etc. etc. The possibilities are strangely both limitless and very limited.

All in all, it's a great game. I thought I'd be bored of it soon after I started, but that's still not the case. From a purely explorative standpoint, No Man's Sky is a masterpiece. If they somehow manage to patch in actual multiplayer, it may be one of the few examples of a perfect game.

The core of the game is its ability to deliver an almost entirely procedural generated universe. That's not an easy trick to pull of between the 10 or so people who worked on this game, but its where the game shines brightest.

The problem (for me) with Minecraft style games is that they pull you back to a central location. There's this big huge world to discover, but you have this invisible tether to the place you begin (or home base). No Man's Sky alleviates this problem by nearly forcing you to explore the vast, endless space expanse before you.

Here's where it gets tricky. All mindless and repetitive tasks aside the gameplay holds up to genre standards as far as a survival/sim goes, no more no less. You need several things to survive: fuel, resources, and environmental protection to name a few. There are ways to upgrade your mining tool/gun, your ship and your suit, and there are a good amount of them. However, the heavy emphasis on procedural generation means there's always a chance you come across boring, mundane planets and run of the mill gear for hours on end. This broke the experience for a few of my friends, as discovering new and exciting things IS the main draw to this title, and they just weren't having that experience.

If you stick with it though, No Man's Sky is incredibly rewarding. You'll get to say things like "HEY I just found a half cow/half gecko hybrid that swims in circles and poops out Carbon!". Yes, that exists. This kept me coming back for more in the first few days, and now I've sunk a good 20 hours into the experience.

Technically speaking. there is a LOT of pop in the game. Textures take some time to generate and the player moves quickly in flight, so it creates a lot of jarring imagery. Overall a small price to pay for no loading screens and seamless planet-planet jumps.

It has its quirks, but seems to be receiving a very harsh response in the community. In my opinion, if you like space/aliens/adventure then its a tough title to ignore. It definitely scratches all those itches and more, worth checking out.

Not the game many thought / hoped it would be, but this is a very enjoyable survival game in a unique and spectacular setting. The extreme negative scores seem to mostly be people with preconceptions of what this game would be, or people who really bought into the ridiculous hype that has plagued this game during development. There was no way it could ever live up to that, and going into this game with no preconceptions and middling expectations is the best way to approach it. If you do that, you'll have a very good time. Post-Foundation update this game finds itself a direction, albeit an often meandering one. It's interesting to compare this game to Minecraft, whose strategy Hello Games should have adopted, by pre-releasing Minecraft in alpha--informing players there would be bugs, Notch seemingly included players in the process of developing the game. But it seems Hello Games, and Sean Murray, have come around and are listening to what the community wants. I found myself engaged in a game I haven't touched since release, and it seems that the game is turning itself around--although it has a long way to go still. I would give this game a 7.5 if I could, but I knocked it up to an 8 as a vote of confidence. I hope they keep up the good work. Expand

This is not a game for everyone. If you expect blowing things up, base building and attacking the wildlife, then it may not be for you. Who knows, maybe it is? I created my own adventure. The adventure is what you make it. This game will give you certain threads to lead you on easily. Don't take them. Explore. Read the stones, and translate. It's worth it.

The only thing about the game that sticks in my craw is the repetitive nature of the planets, flora and fauna. It's like they basically used the Lego model to put them all together. I would love to see an earth-like planet with cities and politics. Otherwise, this game is a paradigm shift in what a video game should be,

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
