You start with a spaceship, and then the game opens you up to a universe with uncountable planets to discover.......after a long tutorial to recover a missing component of your ship. Pre order players get it on launch, but we gotta do that grind. Then you get launched into a amazing universe, and here is an excellent part of this game, the generation of the various planets. You will get lost in the exploration that awaits you and they all look spectacular. But the things you do on each planet are uninteresting, repetitive and tedious. As you whizz away at rocks with your mining laser and walk tediously through dense, boring terrain, you begin to think that this is not the gameplay you were promised by Hello Games. You were promised exploration, and to do that you gotta play Space Minecraft. There is also some lore hidden in deep clutches of the game and sadly, they are the only good parts of the game. I wish that we could have had more of that then grind for hours just to visit a disappointing outpost. The stories you create yourself are engulfed in the tedious grind that is No Man's Sky. There are also some aspects of the game that are combat related both on foot and in ship. On foot is basically a really bad first person shooting experience that is ruined by the control scheme. In the air, you can fight space pirates, a concept that works on paper, but all you shoot are blinking red targets to pass time, not to mention they lack depth that is found in other games. No Man's Sky promised exploration, but everything ambitious it tries, fails hard. I wanted to love it so much, but the repetitive gameplay, bad controls and weakly excecuted space battles pull me away from a game that had so much potential. Best to pass this one. Expand

Over-hyped garbage. Inventory management is a headache, exploring planets after an hour gets boring and repetitive, no multiplayer (even though Sean Murray said in multiple interviews there would be, then proceeds to vaguely tweet out there isn't any multiplayer at the last moment before release). You'd think 15 guys could make a better Minecraft in space -- Nope. Also, middle fingers to anyone who bought this game for the colors and atmosphere. It looks like cr*p in-game; trailers looked better.

Do yourself a favor; Get the broken steam version. That way, if you share a similar experience such as mine, you can refund the game. Be sure to review the refund policies before you do that.

Boring walking simulator. Walk to get resources, to get faster ship and better equipment to ... gather more resources. There's nothing to discover, similar schemes of planets. You won't see any cities, big bases, ruins etc. Just little save points and small abandoned bases. Boring. You can't build, you can't tame creatures. Boring.

The game has potential, but the limitation ruins it. Every planet looks the same, apart from the colour schemes. The whole gameplay evolves around flying your ship and spamming 'C' to scan. The menus are unclear, the textures are 10 years behind, and the overall experience fades away after 2 hours, when you see all the linearity.

I'm taking my time, making some dangerous decisions, making some prosperous ones. Nothing beats landing on a moon and looking over the horizon to a gigantic planet, knowing full well you're only a minute away and will get something out of exploring it. I think, like certain DC movies, people like to just jump on the hate bandwagon without creating their own experience and trying things for themselves, because of this, I feel sorry, almost pity this generation of gamers. The game is about exploration, but most of you people can't make an opinion for yourselves, let alone an experience, so this game was doomed to fail from the start. It is a game that is more akin to Minecraft. You walk around an infinite universe, and make discoveries. That is it. If this does not appeal to you, then I would suggest you either wait until a future update adds in something you like, or skip this altogether.

As it is right now, No Man's Sky is almost exactly like Minecraft. There's not a lot to do, and for the most part you're just going to be running around the place doing the same things over and over again. But with time, future updates, and a little help from the (good parts) of the community, this can become something spectacular.

It feels like they spent all this time building 18 quadrillion worlds but forgot to spend any time on things to do on those planets.

This game is all about grinding. You collect material to fuel your ship to go to another place to collect fuel for your ship. Sometimes your buy a new ship, but the weapons will be the same and you'll probably just end up having more room to collect fuel for your ship.

The beta feel is only enhanced by the several small flaws in the game that really add up to make things tedious and frustrating. Ridiculously slow walking speeds. Constantly fueling up the eight or so things that need fuel. The awkward cursor movement with an analogue stick to control everything in the menus. The rendering distance is similar to Playstation 2 era graphics, not PlayStation 4.

Most of the joy comes from finding a really interesting combination from the procedurally generated worlds, but after a while, you only start to see the individual parts of the whole. Four-legged guy with fins. Four-legged guy with horns. Oh! Four-legged guy with fins and horns!

To be entirely fair, I am one weird dude. I love the idea of a game where the only thing I do is travel through an endless galaxy collecting resources, naming new discoveries, and just marveling at the scale of the universe. If any of that interests you, you will enjoy No Man's Sky. It's not for everyone but for those few weird guys like me it is amazing.

If you have visited 50 planets, make no mistake, this game will not be a wondrous one where content will still magically always feel fresh. Soon enough, you will discover similarities.

It would be a huge mistake to get this game only based in an interest in exploration.

Even in my first visited planet, I faced a creature of almost identical design that I had previously seen in preview screenshots, and I hadn't even been deep into spoilers. What's worse, the design was weird and really out there. But still -- near identical to the same, strange creature I had already seen before even playing the game. This was a huge disappointment and indicative of what was to come.

No, this game is not first and foremost about exploration. That is merely the backdrop, only a part of what is meant to keep you going. The main attraction here is survival. Recharging your exosuit by minerals you have mined in quite typical Minecraft sense, only with a gun rather than an axe. Upgrading your weapons and spacecraft, and so on.

This game feels like 60% about mining/trading/surviving, 30% about exploring and discovering new worlds, and 10% about combat of various beings on planets and in space, combat an afterthought. Please note that exploration would then consitute to a mere third of the game experience.

You need to love other things than exploring to enjoy this game.

    That is the game's problem.

It is very shallow in content besides exploring.

They are all valid in my opinion. My personal opinion is I love this game. I love this tech demo, whatever you want to call it. I am enjoying it very much.

But of all the comment themes the "not what i expected" theme is killing me hard. We all saw game play and we all read about the game prior to release. I have seen people complain about the repetitive nature of the game and the lackluster "OTHER" mechanics like weapon game play or the survival aspect. But for all of you who have not played the game yet and are considering getting it, just consider the expectations you have of the game and THEN ASK YOURSELF WHY YOU EXPECT that?

This game is not a FPS...so why would someone expect evolved weapon mechanics or even better game play with respect to that?

This game is repetitive in the sense all games are repetitive. The quadrillion planets "not being different enough" is kind of rooted in reality. This game takes on something that actually mimics the size of a universe. And people want the 18 quadrillion planets to be more different than they are now? Can anyone even name 18 quadrillion UNIQUE aspects of a planet that would be noticeable in a game. You roll dice, your going to get the same outcome sometimes....its probability,

So that this doesnt get too long, its an awesome experience, and dont expect things in this game that have no basis to be expected. Dont expect massive MMO action, where you getting that from? Dont expect DayZ survival, why would you? Dont expect a quadrillion styles of ship or weapons....was that promised? Do not expect anything. Take it with a blank slate and you will be glad you experienced it.

A masterpiece, and probably a seminal moment in computing and gaming history, though most don't realise it yet. Your enjoyment is only really limited by your imagination, which is exactly how 'play' should be. The people criticising this game seem simply unable to handle the shock of the 'new'. And these are the same 'types' of people who criticised System Shock 2, upon its first release.

What a treat! This is a beautiful game that expands the horizon of whatever current technology can offer, or had been able to offer anyway. As you delve into the game, you begin to realize just how massive this game is. To be able to simply fly off in space and go to any star, is simply out of the world. The diversity in plants, animals, weather, technology, etc, I can't believe only a few people worked on this game. What a feat.

The colors in this game are amazingly well done. Hard to believe that they are randomly generated. The music and sound is even better. I imagine they are triggered by the type of environment you encounter, and the sound of grass rustling, sea breeze, and everything else is simply amazing.

Most importantly, the amazing experience this game delivers can't be put into words. Thank you Sean and the team for delivering us the game of this generation. We hope to see more of you.

I can agree that No Man's Sky didn't live up to it's hype, but it is still an amazing game. Even though the gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times, the massive scale of the game and the diversity of all the planets makes up for it.

No Man's Sky is definitely worth a try if you are interested in an exploration/survival experience set in space.

Instead of the payoff arriving when the player gets to create stuff, the prize is more efficient mining equipment, for further mining. It is a nightmarish perpetual motion machine fueled by the players' patience, which, if they are lucky, will run out sooner rather than later. The lure of taxonomising the planets fades away when you realise it's basically a museum of photographs of characters and life forms, not because gaming is inherently a medium on screen, but rather because they have decided the only purpose of them is to be mined or labelled.

And just a non-spoiler point about the 'mind-bending' ending. I will quote J.L. Austin on the word 'real':

"[A] definite sense attaches to the assertion that something is real, a real such-and-such, only in the light of a specific way in which it might be, or might have been, not real." (1962, p.70)

Do you like fast paced shooters, lots of RPG elements and interactions with NPC's with branching dialogue? Yes? I do as well but No Man's Sky doesn't exactly have much if any of these elements.

After my 3 days of gameplay I'm still in my starting solar system, yet to venture out into the wider galaxy, so what are my impressions....

Planets I've visited in the main are varied (hot to freezing cold, empty to packed full of life). As I'm still in the same solar system I'm not expecting to see massive variation in animals but I have been surprised by a small world I'm on now and how much life and variation of life there is.

NMS has very little if any hand holding, you are on your own in this universe after all and the game (for the most part) leaves it to you to decide what to do when, in what order and to work out how to do it.

Sunsets, vistas etc can look stunning,

The day night cycle in my opinion comes around to quickly but I guess that may vary dependent on planet and spin speed?

The lights (for night time exploration) on your Exo suit are naff and light up about half a meter in front of you .
So far I've established that one of the NPC races hate the sentinels which are AI/robots that patrol the universe, there's lots to do if you want to farm minerals, trade, explore planets, learn alien languages.

However as much as I'm enjoying it I would say....

If you only have 30-60min to play this is not the game for you. you need at least a couple of hours to get anywhere per game play.

While I'm enjoying the exploration and options to do what I want, trade, steal cargo etc. at the moment from what I've experienced this could become repetitive further down the line.

I'm not sure what this universe has in store for me but I'm eager to find out.

Recommended but it's not for everyone ( I prefer this to Fallout 4 though)

After about 30 hours of gameplay, my current goal is saving up 14 million units to buy a new ship, and also save up enough aluminum to build a hyperdrive upgrade. Then I'll start heading for the core again, or perhaps another Atlas space station. So many choices. I'll decide when I get back to the game.

It'll be interesting to see what building bases and trading ships will add to the gameplay once that update is released.

Afters 20 years I'm finally excited about a game again. I already played more than 30 hours and still loving it. This game looks great, the sounds are amazing and the freedom that is delivery it fantastic. This is about a lonely journey to anywhere you want or to become anything you want. There's small stuff that can be improved, but in general lines this is one of the best games ever.

    +Beautiful graphics and sountrack

+Simple game mechanics with lots of freedom

    Cons:
-Almost TOO MUCH freedom with too little structure
-Lack of multiplayer and NPCs makes you feel very small and alone in a huge universe
-After initial awe wears off, game begins to feel repetitive
    -Resource gathering feels grind-y
-Space combat is both predictable yet difficult
    -Lack of purpose/endgame/direction

When I first started the game up, I was completely awed by the sense of scale that this game had. Zooming out on the galaxy map made you really feel like you were in the biggest sandbox in gaming history. The lack of loading between space and ground is remarkable, the procedurally generated worlds looked unique and polished, and I can't overstate how incredible an accomplishment this is for a developer team as small as Hello Games.

After about 10 hours, that initial shine has begun to tarnish and the core gameplay elements are overshadowing the amazement that I experienced at first. Despite the fun mini-quests of distress calls, crashed ships, and language research, and the path of the Atlas and quest to get to the center of the galaxy, I couldn't help but ask myself "...is this it?" In a universe of 18 quintillion planets, with essentially limitless possibilities of animals, plants, planets, encounters, and more, I felt like I would just be doing the same thing, over and over again, on a new planet as I follow a path towards one of two unknown, unexplained purposes.

Resource gathering is far too simple, as nearly anything you need to gather is within a minute's walk from your ship. There was never a time where I felt panicked over not having enough of a resource for any of my essential systems. Space combat basically consists of enemies flying away from you, turning around, and flying straight at you over and over until one of you dies.

I understand the importance of freedom in this game, when they advertised "trade-explore-fight-survive" as the four pillars of the game. But there was never really a point where I felt like "I'll become a pirate!" or "I'll become an explorer!" because all four of those elements are so interwoven and equally as important that it's essentially impossible to survive by doing just one of them.

However, more than anything, you just feel alone in an impossibly big universe, where you never encounter more than one NPC at a time unless there are multiple ships sitting in the same hanger. The lack of multiplayer support (and I'm not a huge multiplayer person) in a game of this size just doesn't make sense. As I wandered around, cataloguing animals and talking with the one NPC stationed in each outpost, I felt like what I was doing would have absolutely zero impact on the universe, because nobody would ever know I was there.

Hopefully, as the devs release new content and add more elements to the game, it will become what everyone wants it to be. For now, it's just another survival-crafting game, albeit one set in an amazingly large sandbox made by an amazingly small team of people.

Many of the reviews given on this game all levitate around the same problem, repetition, and the games lack to live up to the hype based around it. My personal experience with NMS was great all the way up to when I found out how to basically do/find everything the game had to offer. I've put around 10 hours into this game and at the point that i am at, I have came to the conclusion that I am doing the same thing over and over again praying to find a better ship, multi-tool or anything to spice the game up and make it more exciting. Sean Murray continuously talked about how the game is all 100% procedural and you will never find the same creature, plant, and planet more than once in the game, but i found my self travelling to other planets and finding the same (or very similar) animals and plants. The game is also very, very, very repetitive. I'd sit there mining plutonium (one of the most common elements in the game) for 30 minutes and i'd end up using it in less than 30 seconds just so i can f*cking get off the planet. I've traveled to one galaxy, I'd meet a certain AI species (Gek, Vykeen, etc), then once i'm done exploring that galaxy I've traveled to another galaxy and found that the same species was in the new galaxy and i'd just end up leaving immediately because there is nothing new to see!

Final Verdict: No Man's Sky is a game that has a unique idea, but unfortunately, doesn't have enough content (and im not talking about the 18 Quintilian planets that you'll really only end up finding maybe 20 unique ones) to support the hype that was built around it. I personally do not enjoy games that are solely based around gaining resources over and over and over again until you've hit the point when you ask if you should really even bother with it anymore? If you enjoy games where you can explore and survive for an endless amount of time, go ahead and buy this game. If you do not enjoy having to invest a long amount of time into a game, No Man's Sky is not for you.

Also, did I mention there's no multiplayer?

No Man's Sky got SUPER hyped up and for good reason, but people took bits and pieces of what Sean Murray said and went crazy. So, here's what you can expect from No Man's Sky.

It's huge, so don't expect to get to the center of the universe in one day. In fact, don't expect to explore a planet in one day.

It holds your hand very little. You start crash landed on a planet you know nothing about and your treated as such. Your options are to figure it out on your own or to take to the internet. I suggest you figure it out on your own unless your really stumped.

It gets repetitive. You're trying to get to the center of the universe by hoping star systems. So, you gather resources as you explore planets, power your hyperdrive and move on. Rinse and repeat.

There's a TON of beauty in the midst of the repetition. Every planet, animal, alien, plant, ship etc is unique. Learn to appreciate it! T

he lore is really good so and I'm sure it's different for each race that you come in contact with. So far I've come in contact with a warrior race and a scientific race. Both are very different in how they approach and interact with my character.

Push though the mundane. There is repetition, but once you're a few star systems in you begin to see planets and alien races change. It gets more difficult and interesting. Rare materials become more commonplace. Keep going!

The game is half a GB! This alone makes the game worth $60. It is a work of mathematic art!

So, I'm sorry if this game isn't the conglomeration of every good part of every game you've ever played. You're not going to find that in No Man's Sky. What you will find is a universe to explore that is full of beauty, drama, mystery and a healthy dose of repetition. It will change over time. More will be added, bugs will be fixed. Remember Diablo 3 when it first came out? Look at it now. It's amazing! Given some time No Man's Sky will be amazing too. Right now it's just good, which is why I gave it an 8 out of 10.

No Man's Sky is about EXPLORATION, not shooting enemies. Are there enemies to shoot? Yeah, I've landed on two planets that have highly predatory species that want nothing but my blood on their jaws and even trying to get the fuel for my spaceship becomes a fight for survival, which is what the other part of this game is, surviving.

The two things you do in the game are explore and survive. Surviving requires finding materials to power your various space things. Your mining laser, your ship's three different engine types, your suit shield and environmental protection (which keeps you from dying when the planet is freezing or burning hot or has toxic rains). If that sounds boring to you, don't get the game. Other than those things there's nothing here, unless you're interested in finding minerals to sell to the computer for money, which is no different than pretending to be a trader in any of the most recent Fallout games. Basically, you have to either be very interested in looking at the different scenery on each planet, or be willing to, god forbid, actually role play with your game. You're either here for the view, or you're taking off and pretending you're a space captain or a bounty hunter, or a trader, and that's what it'll be, pretend. There's no class, no job, nothing. But it's fun, it's the most simplistic version of fun that gamers have lost with games providing hallway simulators that have story, or an open world with a paper script. Exploration for the sake of exploration is fun.

Now, I will concede issues. The planets aren't all that varied, but they're not varied in the same way they were in Star Wars. Here's a desert, here's a water planet, here's a jungle, etc. Sometimes they mix. I landed on a tropical planet that gave way to ocean and some dotted islands which really stood out from the jungle behind me. But once you see a few you do get the idea that the game is just going to stitch together existing biomes from Earth. The animals you encounter are likewise just kind of slapped together pieces, but sometimes the pieces slap together in interesting ways. One planet I saw had dinosaurs with bug faces and claws. Nightmare fuel for days.

The biggest problem I keep reading about though that I have to address, is the inventory "issue" people have. Which ... I don't get. Your suit powers run off of things like titanium or zinc, your energy weapons and engines run off plutonium. You can get titanium by killing this little eyeball robots (which is easy as the game has an aggressive auto aim), and plutonium is on every planet in the solar system as big red crystals. I keep four slots, two for titanium two for plutonium, and I never run out. That leaves me with 9 spaces for stuff in my ship and currently 8 spaces for stuff on my character. There's no inventory management going on, it's just keeping a slot open for minerals that are literally everywhere. If I had one complaint about the game it would be that surviving is TOO EASY. The only time I felt even marginally threatened was the planet where everything wanted to kill me, and I have a GUN to shoot the alien squirrels with so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Overall, this game is fun where it is but I can see a lot of potential in the future if the game can be made challenging. At the moment it's a lot of flying around and looking at things and you have to be interested in seeing those things and being immersed in the game. If you're looking to shoot stuff but still want space try Rebel Galaxy or Free Space, those are probably more your taste. If you want to land on an alien world and look at things and go, "What the hell?" play No Man's Sky.

-+ There is no hand holding. I think this is good and bad, because some of the important features it doesn't even mention. A better middle ground can be found here.

+ The audio is good. I'm a fan of the music.

+ I've stood in awe of some landscapes.

+ The monoliths tell an interesting story that I care to hear more about.

    - I spent a great deal of time in my home system, and after leaving it I found that the next system over is, from a gameplay perspective, identical. The only differences is that there's some snow on a few more planets. The animals look a little different but that's of little consequence, they all behave the exact same way either passively roaming or aggressively charging. The resources for the most part look identical, save if you harvest the foliage. The settlements are identical except for a few, slight cosmetic changes.

    - Ground combat is meh as it heavily relies on auto-aim and there's really no strategy to it. Space combat is awkward at best, and boring and frustrating at worst. I'm not a huge fan of the right stick causing my in-ship camera to pan around the cockpit as if that feature would ever be useful. The only utility that serves is to create a slightly more scenic and I'm guessing an immersive experience but it causes the flying to be uncomfortable for me.

    - The inventory system is inconvenient, causing you to have to shuffle through multiple pages to sometimes find a recipe. Some items can't be moved at all causing your upgrades to be dotted throughout the menu randomly if you don't place it intelligently, or receive it that way. There is no sorting system.

    - The life in general seems hallow, and constantly reminds me that this is all a mirage. Ships land and within a minute take off again as if they forgot something at home. Intelligent aliens all behave the exact same, and in general all look alike within the same species. Ships streak through the sky, but if followed do absolutely nothing besides fly around for infinity. Frigates warp into sight but just sit there and do absolutely nothing after warping in.

    - Playing the trade market is a profitable thing to do in some games that have that feature, but so far I can't tell if there's a way to actually make it worth my while. Buying an Atlas Stone for 2 million credits only to sell it for a max of 70,000? That doesn't look like a system that was made to profit off of.

    - Why do I have essentially 4 health bars? There's Life Support, environmental protection (this may have a better name), shielding, and health. I understand the purpose of each one, but this seems convoluted.

    - Literally the only difference between ships besides their appearance is the number of slots they have. Research looking ship will be as good at combat as Combat looking ship with the same upgrades. The same goes for multi-tools; no difference between them except their slot count.

    - All planetary hazards behave the exact same. The only thing you'll notice is a different colored bar draining on your screen.

    - If I follow a cave system and it goes for miles I need to either grenade myself out of the cave system, get lucky and find my way out, or give up and go to a previous save point. This discourages cave exploration.

    - There is basically no map system. Found something cool? Forget about it, you'll never find it again. Want to mark a trade hub so you can come back to it after gathering resources? Too bad, there's no way to place a marker.

    - Bugs. My wife has the ability to pin recipes so it tracks resource accrual towards it, but I don't. What's up with that? We're both up to date with patches. Our TVs are side by side so we know we're in the exact same menu. Also, our games have crashed probably close to a dozen times already between the two of us. Another unsavory thing I came across was the Antimatter bug. After obtaining my first unit that's supposed to get me out of my home system, I upgraded to a new ship and lost the fuel I put in my hyperdrive. As a result I had to farm, literally for hours (5+) asking every single NPC I could find to look at their inventory for Antimatter to make another unit of fuel. Sean commented on this saying that there's something in place to prevent this, but I can tell you from experience that there was no fallback. No prompts to find a new unit. Just grind city.

    - Field of view can get real ugly with the landscape morphing right before you if your'e flying around.

    - Why can I buy a ship, but can't sell my ship? I literally just buy one and give the previous one a huge middle finger as I walk away from it and throw my keys? I would think I'd get something for it, I pay good units for those things.

We waited and waited, and finally the day came when we play, did not meet the minimum of my expectations, plus another set normal survival like any other, despite the massive operation and beautiful scenery, the game piece in frame drops, failures rendering and involvement of history and the universe, but disappointing nonetheless be a good experience.

If you get off the ship near a rock formation or an hill risk is that you are going to be transported not on the ground but under and basically pay a multi life sentence inside the texture of the game no matter what.

And that after 10 hours of game play its unacceptable.

Sorry guys, i love the game, the concept and even stopped following atlas from the beginning to get lost on planets and study the korvax BUT you cannot sell a game that doesn't allow you to play.

As you can see from the list, this is either a game you love or a game that you find very boring and can't understand what the rest of us are swooning over. A few other reviewers have made some good summaries: "Imagination required." "If you play Minecraft by climbing over the next hill and never settling down, this is for you." A few other reviewers have made some good summaries: "Imagination required." "If you play Minecraft by climbing over the next hill and never settling down, this is for you." And I'd agree they are spot on. I've spent over 20 hours in this game now, and still get excited when I hit my warp drive and jump into a new system. What new planets will I find? What new lifeforms? Will the advanced alien race who lives there be one I know the language to already or will I be at a disadvantage. These are the questions that drive me and these are the reasons for me that No Man's Sky is an astounding game. For 15 minutes on one planet I stood atop a tower of gold, slowly thinking through how to harvest it without falling to my death or leaving any large sections out of reach. On another planet I spied some underwater caves, and spent time prepping my breathing tech and building power supplies so I wouldn't be caught without air in the dark recesses. And on a third, I cautiously circled a giant herbivore from a distance till I was sure it wouldn't act defensively, trampling me in fear. These are the wonders of this game, and obviously my willingness to suspend disbelief and pretend I'm in a fantastical space opera universe goes a long way to increasing my enjoyment. I find that when you look for the seams in the game - when you shine a light on what is basically just algorithms and facades built over indestructible guts, that's when the game dulls.

I love this game, I can't imagine not playing it for months on end but I also know that at some point the repetitive nature of tasks may start to wear thin. But all games are repetitive I would argue. Halo was a great game but it does boil down to maybe two dozen different tactics.

If the question is if this is a good game or a bad game, my opinion is that it's a great game. What Hello Games has created here is something I've never seen in another game to this degree with the resources they had - on a console no less. If the question is will you like this game, hopefully you read other reviews and try to match up the kind of gamer you are with the reviewer. All I can say is if you're the kind of person who plays a game of Minecraft as an exploration survival game, your structures serving a functional purpose before fashion. If you played Mass Effect and wished you could drive the Mako over the horizon or visit more random planets in the hope of finding a new little secret. If you thought Halo's 2 gun only inventory management was strategic and didn't long for the "carry it all" mentality of Doom. Well, then this game will likely keep you enthralled for as long as you let it. No Man's Sky is a virtual holodeck of fun - just don't try to find the walls of the room or the limits of the AI's programing.

There's both good and bad here, I won't lie.

I like the aesthetic, the sense of wonder and exploration and the whole premise of the game

I dislike the repetition, bugs (3 crashes and a save data wipe in the last 5 hours, not ideal) and grind-heavy gameplay

So I'll give it a 6. Once the developers have got a bit more stability and verity in the game I'm sure I'll enjoy it much more.

Hello Games said as much with Sean Murray saying "We can't tell you much but the idea is to explore the universe, obtain resources and get to the centre"

You arrive on the first planet with the idea to explore, try and find resources, refuel your ship and your suits' systems, trade with NPC's and move on.

That's it. That is all you do. Nothing happens around you. Absolutely nothing.

There's a huge universe of planets with systems, trade routes, space stations and stations on the ground but nothing happens. Literally you are the only sentient being who has any kind of presence in the game world and as such it is all smoke and very, very boring mirrors after a while.

Sean Murray said "We can't tell you much but the idea is to explore the universe, obtain resources and get to the centre". Well, that pretty much sums up the whole thing. There is nothing extra, no extra objectives, no alliances to maintain, no consequences of your actions, no proper trade to be had.

You just find stuff, sell it and then move along. By the Gods it's a boring existence!

You can certainly call it boring (in fact,I guess it will be much more boring than the universe in NMS, given there will be much less life forms out there). BUT, most of us would still want to go out there. WHY? because of the unknown nature of the exploring!! And that, is what NMS all about. It is utterly unfair to call the planets in NMS "skin changers". It is probably true if there are 200 planets or so, but with over 18 quintillion planets...come on...dude...it is it, the universe. I like others have been waiting for this game or even a game like this for a long time. Very eager to crack on and in the beginning I was taken aback at how good it is, then we skip to now only 5-6 hours in and I have lost patience and become bored with the same routines. Poor spaceflight and lack of solid interaction with the other races, the grind to expand the lack of inventory, yes I can get more slots, yes I can grind until I have a bigger ship at a cost of more grinding, endlessly mining the same minerals over and over to fly back to a space port to sell and see if I can upgrade but for what? Dont get me wrong, I enjoy this sandbox type of game, I dont require a purpose in a game Minecraft springs to mind...but it is on a different level. NMS lack of depth is becoming more and more apparent which is a massive shame as it could, with a bit more polish and a few more features be an amazing game it truly could.

It should not in my opinion have been released at this point as it is just a huge sandbox demo of what it could do and very little to do at this point. Hellogames have done a brilliant job of building this huge world but should have held this back for another year to fill it with all the features it craves or passed this massive world to someone that has the expertise to add all of the bits into it as the platform is done and is done quite well, the size is there for all to see but what isn't is everything or anything even close to what people want to do inside it.

The biggest shame of all is that it can all be sorted through months or even years of updates, but by then it will be just another amongst the other forgotten about hyped up games which could have delivered but due to pressures of deadlines and the need to rush the end and cash in, it didn't.

The game, when first begun will make you feel incredible, I was alone on this planet no one else had yet been on, everything was there for me to find and it was incredible - I spent a few hours running around naming new species that I found and plants and the such

Incredibly, it was once I set off in to space I realized how poor this game really was, I eagerly jetted to my next planet and traded some resources at a local space station, I landed on my next planet excited by what I'd find, it was here that it went downhill.

I quickly realised that while everything looked different, (it was snowy instead of sandy) there was so little to do, I wondered around naming animals that looked pretty much the same, naming plants that looked EXACTLY the same using a rubbish mining laser to slowly get enough resource to fly to the next planet.

I have played this game for 12 hours or so and visited over 50 planets, but they all just feel the same - sure it's cool finding a large animal and naming it, but most of the animals look the same, the environments are pretty much the same besides some weather and color change and the game offers no progression, the combat is the dullest thing I've ever experienced, the story is a mess and I don't really care for it at all.

I'm sure you'll say "It's about exploration" and I agree, but unfortunately, even that loses its novelty extremely fast, I spent a third of my playtime in the inventory trying to figure out how to build useless crap that would help my mining laser cool down a bit faster.

Look and feel: The ultra-colourful 70s style sci-fi art and explorative theme are a breath of fresh air after all the moodily lit dystopian shooters that have hit the console since its launch.
There are some graphical quirks when coming down onto the planet and some of the textures look low-res up-close but based on the fact that these are procedurally generated, they should be forgiven.
The soundtrack complements the game well and the sound effects work well.

Gameplay: The exploration of new worlds is an incredible experience to start with but does become a little repeatative after 20 or so worlds. Also, the variances in their algorythms begin to get stretched at the same marker, as the flora & fauna begin to look a little familiar.
Shooting on the ground isn't great and not loads better in the skies but it's not the reason for playing this game...
Trading & building your language skills is strangely compelling as you move from system to system but the inventory system is a patch or two away from being workable.

Summary: If you're open to new experiences and have a penchant for 70's sci-fi, you'll love it... If you want a solid space shoot-em-up with a strong story line, Destiny may be more your thing.

Two hours in, and I saw all the content the game can offer. All planets look the same, you need to farm fuel and elements just to keep on doing the same thing on another planet. Each galaxy is skyboxed, you can travel between galaxies only through the main menu.
Not a 60$ game in any way, I'll reach the center of the galaxy and trade it back when it's hot to gain some bucks out of it. Buy

Its vast playground, might offer endless possibilities. Repetitiveness is inevitable in such a large worldmap although i am sure devs are going to increase variety in terms of point of interests/events etc. The game is out only for a couple of days and people started to claim they have seen everything... Your brain cannot even visualize 10 million beans while there are 10 million times more places to go.

This game is a must buy for people that likes exploring and chilling out while enjoying scenery. Settlers will need to wait a bit more since the devs said construction will be available in later content patches.

I do not recommend this game if you only like action and narrative focused games.

(This game is not meant to be rushed.)

Each planets have so much for you to do and look for, you can spend hours lost inside the caves of a toxic planet, discovering new wildlife or interacting with alien races. The only reason I'm not giving this a 10 is because I would have liked a fully customisable character and the in flight combat is a bit annoying. Expand

I *love* how this game is diving opinion- and *that's* partly why I love it. The game is meant to be (mostly) *relaxing* not (over)stimulating; never forget that. Visuals, music, auto-generated whatsits- all marvellous (reminds me of Halo). I even like the inventory and resource management design (reminds me of Metal Arms). Only get this if you understand that exciting games can also be relaxing.

It's a very clever, deep and somewhat emotional game. How would you feel if you were the only one of your race in the galaxy with the slightest 1 in a million chance of seeing anybody again?

For those of you of a certain age, NMS is the glorious child of Captain Blood and Elite!! I've been playing for a couple of hours now and I've already discovered loads of new species and different flora and fauna and uploaded them to earn some units. I've learnt a tiny amount of an alien language. I've become a friend of a particular race of aliens which means I get info from them. I've built my hyperdrive and visited a new start system. I've bought and sold stuff on the intergalactic market, I visited a space station and I've just broken into a disused plant to steal some blueprints. I had to 'blow the bloody doors off' to get in which alerted the sentinels which meant I had to hide in a tunnel until they disappeared!!

From what I've seen so far this game is simply amazing and looks fantastic (if you landed in the middle of the Sahara desert you'd think earth was pretty dull!!). Each planet I've visited has looked and felt completely different. Some have just been rocky with very few animals, where as some have had huge areas of plants and trees, with bizarre hopping creatures, massive caves to explore and loads and loads of materials to mine. For me I think this is going to be my next Elder Scrolls On-Line which I spent over 100 hours playing!

I've given it 10 to hopefully boost the score because this game deserves it. No game should get a 10 as no game is perfect. So I'd probably have given it a 9 if there weren't so many morons about.

I can't help but feel like a lot of the negative reviews are people who the game quite simply wasn't made for.

If you are an action game junkie or someone that only ever plays AAA games, be wary, this is an independent game that got its scope blown up because of hype. It may not be your cup of tea. However, if exploring space and experiencing the scope of the universe while surviving in hostile environments and just enjoying the immersion of it all, sounds like your cup of tea, you should definitely pick it up.

You will learn about technology and culture of a galactic race, trade goods with them to earn credits to buy other goods or even new ships. to have more capacity or better weapons, etc. But that's just a tool for you, to explore more und more. You can spend days exploring just one planet and will not even know half of the planet.
If you love what you read here, you will love No Man's Sky. If you want more or something different, well then the game is not for you.
I'm very curios what the developers bring with add-ons. As far as they announced, they don't know it and want too see what people like and want...
Well for my part: Much bigger ships for interplanetary mining and trading
And yes, multiplayer could be much fun, but I don't know how to fit it in, not to destroy the lonely-explorer feeling. Maybe a option for friends to start on the same planet...

    The game is great.
It gives the feeling of infinite space, of freedom and mystery.
The game turned out to be exactly as promised by the developers.
The only drawback may be considered too high for an indie game price. But does the high price, something is getting worse?

Here is the deal, I was NOT hyped at all for this game, because my expectations where (as other have stated) big & shallow, won't keep me engaged.
Now, for a few years to be honest almost no game has kept me engaged for more than a couple of hours, then I get bored and drop it, I am not what you would call a "serious" gamer (although I do end up with quite a large collection).

Second disclaimer, I own an Xbox One, it is my family system, we all use it, I bough a PS4 recently because I want to try out PSVR when released and I got it very cheap, not with any game in mind (except maybe Battlefield 1 later in the year). The PS4 is hooked up to a large monitor and no one else uses it, just me.
So, finally, to the game, as I said, pretty much first PS4 game, not hyped much, but then I start seeing lots of negative reviews around and I though, you know what ? ,I am sure this game does not deserve these reviews, I know Devs have worked very hard on it and should get some unbiased reviews that don't come from fanboys (PS4 or XBO).
I got the game from PS Store (deserves another review, how is it possible that the same credit card I JUST used to pay Playstation Plus now is not valid ?), installed fairly quickly, reported size is even less than what I had been reading (3.6GB I believe was the download).
I started the game in a random planet, did not see much of interest, walked around a bit, got attacked by bunch of animals, started getting bored, fixed the ship and took off.
Space Station helped me build hyper-drive, so I started planet hopping, I have been following clues, I am hooked on the "ruins" thing, but I also know now how to be efficient with resources, I basically spend most of the time jumping back to or looking for new planets with gold, once I figured out what to look for I fill up my ship with gold and take off, I am able to get huge amounts of credits by trading it and buy everything I need (I would say I have pretty much become a trader).

Is everything good ?, absolutely no:
I have seen the issues, fish swimming in one inch water, a ruin located 1 mile underwater, clearly related to random generation, potentially fixable. I have also had crashes, twice, I do not like that (and the reason I took 1 point from the score), this should not happen at all in a controlled environment like PS4, also, I am sure, quite possible to patch.
I do not like that I have 2 "trading" menus instead of 1 to buy/sell, also that I can only trade my exosuit content, that's a minor annoyance.
Opposite to many of the other reviews I have walked quite far form my ship and there IS always a marker that shows you the way back, I guess it can be a bit trickier to find if you are underground, but I have never lost my ship nor do I see how you could at all.
Still could not get the atlas pass, not that I have focused much effort on it.
I wish I could get (maybe later in the game) some sort of bot built that will continue mining for me, even if I have to return to orbit to pick up the resources, even if the bot took a slot in my ship I think it would still be worth it.
I would like to see some sort of multiplayer added, if I do happen to find other players I would like to be able to interact with them better (trade, maybe travel together from that point, even if fighting is not an option I would not mind that terribly)

I like the atmosphere overall, I like the music, It has kept me engaged for longer than any other game I can remember since God Of War 3 (I really think I have only spent more time in CIV right now).
Maybe the fact that I did not have a PS4 and I did not get over-hyped helped, but I am truly enjoying the game and I hope devs will continue supporting it, adding content, etc.
Others have focused in the resource gathering aspects, I have found it be easier to manage than other games I have played, and not so boring.
Graphics are interesting, I like the palette, quality is adequate, better than you would get on an MMORPG, but not photo-realistic, you should not get the game if high-end graphics are key to your gaming experience.
I have heard some complains about FOV, I think it's fine, but I also notice the PS4 struggles sometimes to render everything as I fly over.
It seems the price was another pain point, it was not for me, not because I have a lot of money, I do not, but the fact is I don't buy that many games, and as I said, other games do not keep me that engaged, so in the end if I have invested 50 or 60 dollars in a game and it only keeps me entertained for 10 hours I have wasted the money, on the other hand this game, I can see putting in a lot more hours (I am sure I am well over 30 hours already), so, in my case, I am fine with the price.
I do suggest if you are on the edge that you wait, I am quite sure price will drop in a couple of months and I do not think starting first will give other players any kind of insurmountable advantage

Overall, fun game, interesting, great looking, I am quite happy with it :)

No Man's Sky was hyped to basically be an infinite playground of wonder and discovery. The thing is, the underlying design and mechanics are so obvious that it is a constant struggle to suspend disbelief in order to feel immersed. I've seen many people call the game "relaxing" but how could a game be relaxing when you need to work so hard to like it? A first impression review said it well: you get out of the game what you put in. But this is supposed to be a game. A "relaxing" one at that.
When you see reused assets, the same weather effects with different labels, lack of physics or any other glaring sign of bad game design, it is on you, the player, to make an excuse to yourself to keep enjoying the game.
I did not find the game fun at all.

The gameplay is fairly addictive for those who like exploration, gathering resources, and unlocking mysteries.

Above all that, the game achieves what it sets out to do by creating a sense of awe and giving the player the feeling of single-handedly exploring a vast universe. It also has just enough elements and NPC's in play to keep you interested for a long time. All that with promised FREE future patches and update adding even more features which players are now anticipating. This game is a 10 for me both in premise and execution. WELL DONE HELLO GAMES. P.S. I have bought a very big and unfinished sandbox game at 60$. In my opinion the developer built up the hype so that players will buy the game as a premium one and not an unfinished indie that worth 20$ tops. The main feeling that this game left me until now is that I was SCAMMED (as with Aliens Colonial Marines).

Advice: Don't buy games that give little info before the reviews! :)

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
