Rather poor, lazy and generic survival elements covered up by shallow and boring exploration. The game certainly is pretty when you're ignoring the various graphical bugs. But aside from gorgeous music and selectively gorgeous visuals, the game doesn't have much to offer.

Your super limited inventory space (even after upgrades) makes exploration a chore that you simply can't partake in as you'll have almost no inventory space to spare when you factor in upgrades and resources for just maintaining your redundant hazard and life support meters. Your best hope while exploring is finding some super boring wildlife that simply runs away when you get near it, or looking at plants that look like slightly different than real world counterparts (trees, cacti etc.). Its also not very fun discovering planets, wildlife or plants when you have no one to show off too or share your 500th meaningless discovery with. Discovering things doesn't feel fun, isn't rewarding or worthwhile, so why bother exploring?

What about survival elements? Well you have a health bar that refuses to empty (read: its impossible to die this game is so easy) and lazy, generic "Life support & Hazard suit" gauges that depletes based on planetary conditions. The way to refill the gauges is simply using the super common resources found all around you. So survival is a non-issue at all times, and death doesn't set you back at all. Where's the tension and fear of the unknown when you essentially know nothing will harm you, and even if something does harm you odds are it won't do much of anything? It all seems very tacked on, as if Hello Games realized that the bland exploration caused by proceduraly generated planets would be boring if they didn't tack on various gameplay elements. Problem is, those elements don't enhance the game, its just frustrating.

Further adding to the list of faults is the combat. With poor aiming mechanics and lackluster enemy variety and design, there is no depth. On foot combat offer very little in the way of challenge or fun, and ship combat doesn't really change much at all. Fighting enemy starships is a tedious "blown one up blown em all up" affair, and outside of pirates occasionally trying to blow you out of the sky, you'll probably forget your ship even has guns attached to it.

The trade and economy system are lackluster. Galaxies have different values for items, but with such limited space and no way of knowing what the next galaxy's trade rates are, keeping your selling items (indicating by green boxes) in-between trips is sort of impossible when you're always bleeding for inventory room. Trading with NPCs is sort of pointless as well, seeing as how they all behave the same way and you always get the feeling like you're paying or losing out on trades to get next to no benefit. Whenever you walk up to any trade ships you encounter, the flavor text for what the interaction is like may change, but your options are still “Trade for ship or stop talking to this person”. When you finally go into the trade screen, you may think to yourself that you're going to get to bargain, or offer your valuables in exchange for the trader's valuables that can be used to craft upgrades or something. But no, its a black and white “Buy at this one set price or don't bother talking to me”. The whole trading, buying and selling system has about as much depth and is about as interesting as NES RPGs like the original Final Fantasy.

The sense of discovery is lost here. What you discover isn't interesting and never feels worth discovering. Alien life is boring and dull, and you can't share your discoveries with them or any of the other players. What good is it that I discovered this galaxy when all of maybe 10 NPCs inhabit it, and no other human player will likely ever get to witness it or use my discoveries to aid in their survival there? Exploration proves fruitless, as the randomized planets lack the setpieces and gorgeous handcrafted vistas that such brilliant exploration games like Abzu, Shadow of Colossus, Flower or Journey have provided in the past or present. Combat is dull, survival feels like I'm babysitting some constantly depleting bars rather than using my wits to outsmart the universe, and the economy system is about as generic and uninteresting as any other game's despite its shallow attempts at depth or intrigue.

In short, if all you want from a game is pretty scenery and can handle the worst pop-up you've ever seen in a game as well as lifeless planets with no personality, than by all means pick this up, you can take some wonderful screenshots for your desktop. But if you're looking for absolutely any substance in your exploration or interactions with the universe, or hope to discover some truly breathtaking moments on par with the aforementioned exploration games, I recommend looking to the upcoming Abzu, or the August PS+ game Rebel Galaxy for your exploration or space trader/pirate needs.

The basic idea and premise is good, the mechanics are typical of a resource scavenging game. The UI is dull and clunky, the music is largely umipressive and forgetful. After a few hours you realize the whole gameplay is grinding to improve your gear to grind some more. and that gets repetitive very fast.

Also very buggy. I had 2 crashes in the space of a 5 hour sitting.

It's as if you told them, "I'm going to sell you this candy bar", and they expect that you throw in the candy factory as well.

People are entitled to their own option. However silly they may seem to me. So I wouldn't rule out any of the negative reviews you will come across. The game is not without its flaws, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have a bias towards the game. Furthermore, this game type is not for everyone, which is what I believe causes such a wide range of the mix reviews that are out there.

Some small annoyances the game have are:

    - the lack of changing your POV

    - the widescreen display shot that happens often which you have to wait for it to go away until you can start doing things again

-the inability to change the controller scheme (seriously who presses R3 instead of L3 in order to sprint!?)

-a few bugs that can take you a little out of the immersion

Nevertheless even with those issues, which I hope they fix, the game is absolutely amazing. The ability to completely loose myself in this game as I run around finding many new points of interest, flying in or out of the atmosphere, finding new star systems to explore, and simply learning the language in order to understand the different NPC's they have in the game. The progression feels real as you unlock more slots to your suit, find new and better ships, and new multi-tools which make it easier to gather resources.

I think if you are on the fence about NMS, and watching a gameplay videos of someone playing doesn't appeal to you, then this is just not your game. It doesn't make it a bad one, simply one tailor for a certain kind of person. Then again that is just one man's opinion.

I can't help but feel like a lot of the negative reviews are people who the game quite simply wasn't made for.

If you are an action game junkie or someone that only ever plays AAA games, be wary, this is an independent game that got its scope blown up because of hype. It may not be your cup of tea. However, if exploring space and experiencing the scope of the universe while surviving in hostile environments and just enjoying the immersion of it all, sounds like your cup of tea, you should definitely pick it up.

The game feels complete already as a unique hybrid of MMO space game with a survival game like Minecraft or Ark. But I can imagine with the base building and other features the developer has coming and the other additions, it will become a truly engrossing experience.

I can already tell I will be putting an ungodly amount of time into this. See past the BS angry reviews by teenagers who want another COD or have unrealistic expectations of these independent developers and enjoy exploring the universe!

This game was sold as an exploration game but is more of a survival game. It is a pretty solid survival game, but it didnt turn out to be the game we were told it would be. I wouldnt recommend the game.

a glorified walking simulator on planets with some space flying that is just as boring as the walking simulator. this game should have been $20 at best but no they want a full price of $60 for this early access garbage.

Honestly is the most boring game I played in the PS4 . very bad graphics , poor framerate , repetitive and tedious gameplay , as well as empty planets and aimless . Basically it is a basic version of Mass Effect without the brilliance he had. 30fps sub framerate, screen tearing and another graphical issues.

The scores of zero are just absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't rate this a 10/10, it's a 8/10, but potentially better as I've only sunk 10 hours into the game and my impressions of it are improving every hour as I learn more about the game. At the end of the day, I wouldn't be surprised if this game crept into the 10/10 category after I sink 30+ hours into it.

    Let's clarify one thing...

At the end of the day, I wouldn't be surprised if this game crept into the 10/10 category after I sink 30+ hours into it.

Let's clarify one thing... A lot of the 0/10's are either:

    A. Xbox trolls. No explanation needed.

    B. PC gamers that are heavily invested in Elite and other space games, not sure why they even care. It's obvious, because they say they played the game for hours, but decided they would go back to Elite. Yup... you have a powerful PC, but decided to get this game on PS4? Sure ya did. Doubt they even played it.

    C. People who didn't understand what they were getting into. You don't buy Super Mario Bros and complain that it's not a FPS, then rate it a 0/10 on Metacritic.

It delivers what it promises: Explore. Fight. Trade. Survive. If you expected something different, then that's your own fault. If you take the game for what it is, you will enjoy it. Just don't buy it and expect to hop in a deathmatch with your friends. This game is not that and I'm glad it's not trying to be that, we already have a lot of those games. This game is a work of art, very unique, and beautiful at it's core. There is nothing out there that you can compare with No Man's Sky.

Once the nice looking planets and whacky procedural animals stop being your focus, you begin to notice repetition. The game's "grind" feels very artificial. You're constantly "recharging" your life support, and refueling your "launch thruster", this breaks flow and seems to have only been added to crowbar in the survival element.

There's nothing to the NPC races. They just stand still and talk to you, to which there is no feedback. They simply rotate their head and move their arms slightly.

What it is, is a exploration and survival game, with survival being a main focus of the game. I didn't even know that till last night when watching interviews, but I still took the chance anyway. There isn't much of a story and there simply wont be. The interviews and such have stated it has cinematics and such to start, but is a survival game and a single player experience where you may come across another player later on. It mostly is gathering resources, exploring planets, and getting new species discovered while looking for technology and surviving....That may turn away some people, but for me that is the experience I wanted. I wanted to be able to land on planets and explore while also just drifting across the cosmos. Sure to some it may as well be a pretty screensaver, but to me I knew exactly what I was going to get. The people that expected something different, didnt bother looking past the trailers. Trailers never are exactly what a game will be, you need to listen to Q and As, watch some interviews, be sure that is the game you want. And to be perfectly honest, If you are THAT bothered by how the game is, or if you are waiting for the steam release and you dont like it, GO REFUND IT!!! GO GET YOUR MONEY BACK IF YOU HATE IT! NOONE IS FORCING YOU TO KEEP IT OR PLAY IT! But for the others who have actually read through all of this and think it is an experience you would be willing to try, Go for it. The gameplay does get stale at times, but all games do at some point down the road. That's why you log off of games, take it in doses, then hop off when you start getting bored of it. The graphics, while some say are last gen, to me have a charm to them and I love them. Funky colors and all. The music is amazing but I still prefer to play my own music during the game, and almost all issues they talk about with the game can be remedied as the creator said himself, by continuing with the game and upgrading what you have. I hope this has helped at least one person out. I give No Man's Sky an 8/10. Expand

No, this game is not perfect, and it's not THE traveling game with endless possibilities. Many gameplay videos show exactly what this game is and there aren't any surprises. It's exactly what it should be.

Again, this game is not perfect. But what it does is build new possibilities for the future of gaming! It is a mediocre play-style. Maybe what a 5/10 game would have. But the exploring the endless planets easily adds 3 more points. It's new and different. It's not anything seen before.

All I would want added to this is the ability to find a friend and explore planets together. Help each other out by repairing each other's gear or weapon, but not trading so you can't break the need of exploring and gathering.

    BREAKDOWN:

Graphics: 6 out of 10. Nothing to gawk at, but not horrible! Considering the game it's compared to most is Minecraft, it's a change to a positive direction.

Gameplay: 8 out of 10. Clearly not meant to be a FPS. Don't go in expecting that. You will be disappointed a Master Chief rip-off isn't destroying bad aliens. It's main focus is survival and exploration. With a small nod to a shooter. That said, I've seen worse FPS that didn't play near as good, and that was their main focus! You will be doing a lot of the same. Flying, exploring, mining, crafting, and repeat.

Sound: 8 out of 10. A great soundtrack with good sound effects. Some animals did make me lower the volume a bit, especially after feeding them, but it's still solid.

Story: 7 out of 10. Yeah, there's not one. But this game doesn't need one! It's what you make of it. Not having a story is why I rated story so high. A decision to keep a basic been-there-done-that storyline out and to have a focus on what matters for this genre!

The average would be 7/10. But pushing limits and making breakthroughs for future gaming deserves more! This game is a first of it's kind, and deserves big recognition for what a group of a dozen people created! A lot of sweat, tears, beard growing, and lots of plaid shirts were used in this creation. And it shows. It really does.

Love the game for what it is, not what others hyped it up to be.

Definitely some framerate issues when you're flying low over a planet, and low res textures on PS4, but that personally never bothered me in any game, as long as the gameplay is good, which I do think it is. I think the problem with a lot of folks it that they're following the 'tutorial' too strictly which tends to take you on a quick, repetitive path. I ignored the initial planet jump when instructed and ended up spending 4.5 hours on my starting planet just exploring, and was pleased with the progress I made there alone. Like I said, I can see this getting repetitive, but for me personally, it's a great experience. I'm sure once they add base building (which they said might be in the next patch), people will find better ways to utilize the resources instead of constantly recharging/refueling items. Overall, a great game IMO. Expand

As an old school gamer, we dreamed of this game back in the days of Frontier Elite. It's finally here, and will appeal to some, but isn't the 'fun' game you may be looking for. It's more a meditative, immersive, atmospheric experience. It truly excels in that regard and in my opinion is worth it for this aspect.

I'm an older gamer (39) and my preference is mostly towards FPS games (Project Reality, CS:GO, Red Orchestra, Insurgency, Mass Effect) but recently moved over to console exclusively as it is more relaxing. I love open-world games like GTA V (except for slow multiplayer loading times). For the larger games like Skyrim, Fallout, and Witcher I never fully finish them. As much as I love their worlds, you can still grow tired of them.

No Man's Sky was destined to be divisive. Early-buyer disappointment could have been avoided if we were shown more of the specific gameplay upfront. This is on both Sony and Hello Games. They had a masterful marketing campaign underway, and it appears they gambled on withholding gameplay to maximize anticipation/revenue. In many ways, it is exactly what has been shown in the trailers, and conversely, no more than what is shown. There are hidden mysteries, and details. You have a sense of player agency that is boundless yet sharply limited by the mechanics.

You will get tired of No Man's Sky, but for some you will return to it, to visit, like you would a familiar destination. It's predictable, yet always different. No Man's Sky is mathematical beauty. It is just touching the surface of what will be possible using generative algorithms. To me, part of the beauty of what No Man's Sky is what it represents, is what is possible in years to come. We will have our holodeck, so patience. In the meantime enjoy this for what it is.

Music, atmosphere, sense of accomplishment from exploring... this game is just such a masterpiece. It truly lives up to the hype. Talk about leaving reality and living in another universe. There are so many details, so many awesome things to discover... words can't do it justice. Play it.

I played 9 hours because I had hope that maybe I would see new things but I was wrong. You are doing same thing over and over. After couple hours nothing in this game surprised me. Also they said about this game that space based but there is no orbiting, no landing on asteroids, no space walks, no space mechanics etc. Also they want 60 dollars for this game? So I can call them as fraud. II played 9 hours because I had hope that maybe I would see new things but I was wrong. You are doing same thing over and over. This game is a love-hate game, it doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't really have a goal, but it is a great exploration game which is exactly what it is listed as. For me the game is perfect, needing some bugs fixed but as of launch it is very solid and an enjoyable exploration game.

People are hating because they don't know what the initial goal of this game was. It's a game which allows you to explore, discover, and craft your way troughs an infinite world. Sure this is no COD but the game is great and is perfect for what it was designed. Don't blame Hello for doing exactly what they wer telling us.

I think too many people were expecting Mass Effect on steroids. I love it for what it is -- an explorative sandbox where you can play however the hell you want and escape reality for awhile. It might not be worth $60 bucks, but I have no problem supporting a team of 13 people who poured their life into this game.

And if you want some action, get a fighter ship and go destroy some freighters (then deal with the sentinels).
Does it worth 60 dollars? Maybe not, maybe yes... it's all about taste. I have bought AAA games for 60 dollars and I play them about 5 - 10 hours only, and games that costs 10 - 20 dollars and I play them for months.

I know many people who were expecting this to be some sort of massive online multiplayer role playing experience. That it is not. While there is the possibility of encountering other players, it is certainly not a core mechanic of the game. 2 people finding each other on a planet sized planet is basically a zero possibility. Though, thats not to say at some point it wont happen. The game focuses on the individual journey and survival aspects of gameplay. There is combat in the form of alien lifeforms becoming hostile or robotic sentinels that protect the planet attacking you. Though, again, it is not the main focus of the game. This is no call of duty or battlefield.
In all, I have played for several hours thus far, and appreciated the challenges and rewarded discoveries in my journey and look forward to many many more hours of exploration.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
