Entrancing for the first few hours. Once the novelty of travelling to different planets wears off as they all become the same, the game loses its appeal all at once. Collecting resources is as much fun as vacuuming, and the game gives you a universe-sized carpet.

It's full of that stuff. This game is also not "Chill", as some people describe it. You don't get much time to look at stuff and drift lazily through space since survival is a major aspect of this game - in the sense that it annoys you even when you're in absolutely no danger, inducing constant, unnecessary anxiety until the exact moment that you realize that there isn't anything dangerous in this game, which is coincidentally when it becomes boring. Space pirates in this game are not dangerous, unless you don't understand how the auto-aim system in this game works - which is apparently the case for a lot of people. That said, a lack of understanding of gameplay mechanics does not make a game fun, or difficult. It just makes you bad at the game.
P.S. Clearly there are a lot of people who don't like the game, and clearly their input is also considered helpful since most of the 'most helpful reviews' accurately describe the depths of woe you will discover in sony's most advertised release of this year. Just please don't buy the digital version of this game like I did, or else you'll have to contemplate the meaning of your existence after willingly spending $90 canadian on this.
P.P.S. I do really like the soundtrack, even if it is minced and thrown into your face throughout the game. In my mostly unrelated to this review opinion about the soundtrack, which isn't really a part of this game (unless you count recombinations of the same sounds as a soundtrack), it sounds more like the game that was advertised than the game itself.

NMS needs to be patched ASAP; Crashing every time I warp, creatures half trapped on the ground, need bigger stacking on every slot on inventory, better spaceship handling, better space fights, and the most important of all KEEP MY SAVED FILES ALIVE!!! i have restarted this damn game twice because my save file its "corrupted".

The game does what it was advertised to do, it is a massive beautiful game with totally free exploration with the option to follow a couple paths but you by no means have to.

The controls are a bit odd but after just a few minutes of playing you get used to them and find they work very well.

The survival aspect is there for those who want to venture off away from their ship and is avoidable enough to be a background feature for those that don't want it with room for everything in between.

Space combat starts off all fingers and thumbs but, again, once you have played it for an hour or so and have accumulated more than 5 minutes of space combat you get the feel for it and it is a very enjoyable experience.

Graphics wise it is excellent! Bar a view-drawing distance that can't be changed I cannot fault the visuals especially considering the variety. Though it is obvious that it is like lego with set pieces that can be put together by the procedural generation and that more parts are needed to help stave off the feeling of "this looks similar".

The game has its issues, glitches, bugs, crashes and balance issues in some areas. But this was to be expected. Since the days of games spending 5 years in development are gone, with most if not all the of the made up time being spent on QA this is just the way of things now and we have only ourselves (the consumer) to blame. Hello Games has responded by hiring a massive support team and new head of QA with a new ticketing system starting Monday the 15th of August and are already hard at work on patches and workarounds along with FREE DLC.

    In conclusion:
This game is a simple, chill game that I have already sunk 20 hours into and I don't see me slowing down anytime soon. It is an uncomplicated game that allows the escapist in me to zone out from my world and just fly, shoot, mine, explore and even try and discover the story...its there, just hidden a bit too deep for most people to be bothered to find.

The game was over hyped and those who feel disappointed have to realise that the speculation of some fan blogs and even the odd periodical could never have been realised by a developer this small.

Well done Hello Games, now fix those issues, get me my DLC!

The algorithmically generated planets are alien in the truest sense. I have a profound sense that I am alone and that I am walking a very dangerous path. Dashing to caverns for shelter during snow storms, fighting off angry sentinels and desperately seeking materials I need. All of this in a world smeared with jaw-dropping colors and gorgeous sound design.

For some of us, 'No Man's Sky' just clicks... like crazy... like a geiger counter. I love this game. My advise is this, don't let a critic with his own set of likes and dislikes tell you something isn't worth your time. You could wind up missing out on a very profound personal experience.

No Man's Sky allows its users to engage in a massive universe, and although mining is a common factor, this game give a different feel to it as it involves trades and finding your way around the universe given to you. I have to give props to Hello Games for delivering something new to us. It's not action-packed like shooters, nor is it fast-paced like racing games, it's the type of game the gives you a break. No Man's Sky is a game that gives you relaxation, a pause of short breath in the midst of all the organized chaos in gaming. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this game has lied to me in all those trailers and info that they gave me. They said you can travel to 18 billion planets or something but what they didn't tell us is that its 18 billion copies. When i enter a new system i feel like i just went around in a circle and ended up in the same area, every system contains the same old same, just a few planets a space station and some other things. Its just very boring, i don't mind grinding in a game but when i feel like there is no reward or purpose to grind for its just a waste of time. I feel like this is absolutely not worth 60 bucks. I think people with a lot of imagination might find some fun in it but for me its just not at all what i hoped for. The game also does not explain anything in the beginning so you basically don't have any idea what it is u gotta do. After 20 hours you're doing exactly the same as in the first hour and probably at the end of the game u pretty much have been doing the same all the time. The planets don't feel different at all, some planets might be a bit different but the only thing that is different is the colours and some animals. I probably won't be playing this game anymore because it just feels like a waste of time. Overall i think people that expect a huge game with all kinds of different worlds are going to be disappointed. Expand

IGN's review by Dan Stapleton says it best. "No Man Sky’s biggest failing, though, is that after more than 25 hours played I’m effectively doing the same things I was doing in the first hour."
The amazing thing is that this is exactly what I heard about this game 6 to 9 months ago. I am blown away that any hype was ever generated at all. This spells doom for the PS4.

This game was changed at the last minute to be more of a survival game but I think they went a little bit too far in that direction. And what's more is the fact that this game BEGS to be online with friends in space to find and yet there's none of that and yet they took what would have been a $20-$30 indie game and made it a full priced game at $60 was just plain wrong. Read all the reviews, not just the numbers and if you're still on the fence, I can recommend this game when it goes on sale at $40, tops. Exploration wears thin after only a few hours once it sinks in that each planet is very similar to the last and there's almost no diversity in design. There's no rhyme or reason to how the system designs planets so you may just stumble across a planet that's listed as Extreme Heat, suffers from periodic fire storms that pushes the temperature over 250C, and has not a single bit of water, yet somehow has more animals and plant life than a temperate water world. I'd like to say this is an exaggeration but it isn't.

The other AI lifeforms in this game are stereotypes: greed driven trader race, mindless warrior race, advanced electronic race. They don't do anything of consequence except sit around in various huts waiting for you to stumble by to solve their ridiculously easy puzzles. Your existence as a player is solely to go from planet to planet, destroying the natural resources to build more fuel and materials in order to go to another planet and do the same thing. Over and over again. In a quest to... well, do nothing really. There's a quasi-goal of getting to the center of the galaxy but nothing ever explains why this is meaningful.

This is probably one of the most shallow games I've had the misfortune of playing. The survival elements barely exist because the game almost never puts the player in dire situations and is guilty of giving the player all the tools necessary to avert any crisis early in the playtime. The exploration is just dull and unrewarding and the items you can learn to craft are so few that you'll have learned them all - with exception to the damned Atlas Pass v2 and v3 - in less than 10 hours if you explore an entire system or two.

Make no mistake, this game isn't getting hate because people dislike the genre, it's getting hate because it's a terrible game. It tries to do a bunch of different things and fails at all of them (and frequently reminds you of these failures with crashes to the dashboard and a frustratingly clunky UI).

The good news: It's visuals and music are better than I expected and add to the mysterious gameplay. I am especially impressed by the variation in landscapes. In the real universe also everything is more or less a astronomical random gamble. This game simulates that. The environments and fauna give you plenty of awe moments.
The bad news: At some point the game gets repetitive. It is basically 1) finding resources 2) create a warp drive 3) fly to next solar system 4) explore planets. And that loop repeats itself. On the other hand every game gets repetitive at some point. Isnt FIFA or DOOM repetitive after 15 hours? It is also basically doing the sam all over again.
Things to improve: I would like to see a better combat experience on planets. I also want to see more intelligent life (where are the alien cities?). And by example a war between several intelligent life forms, where you can decide to join a side or to stay neutral. Or give the possibility to take tasks in alien cities that you can complete. Afterwards you get money (units) from it. That would also decrease the repetitiveness.
My conclusion is that the game is a success. And gives a lot of awe moments the first hours. For true science fiction freaks this game is a must have. But I think that Hello Games should feel obligated to make things better with -free- updates given the heavy price tag of 60 euros. Especially in terms of planet combat and tasks to complete for alien cities.

And there is a good story- you just have to eek it out. I learned over 100 words (as you don't understand alien languages of course) before even bothering leaving my first system- which meant hours and hours of slowly learning a species history through visiting various locations etc. And that changed the shape of the game for me, and my goals. it is slow though, and the resource grind is repetitive, but that should be known to everyone already, it's a little like Minecraft. There's very little to do in the game beyond collecting things. The big end goal of reaching the center of the universe is barely a goal. The game is meant to be explored and each planet basically mined for everything it has. It's not something I enjoy and I don't know anyone who would enjoy it. I'm sure someone exists out there who would like this game. I definitely did not however. Expand

    - Space looks beautiful and there's a number of things to do in it such mine asteroids, steal cargo from freighters or defend it from pirates
    - There are 3 alien species that you find all over planets or space stations which you can interact with. Most of the times talking to them proves useful.
    - Interesting ways of finding out about the lore of the game (learning alien languages and alien history)
    - The goal reaching the center gives an indirect narrative without pushing you to necessarily follow
    - Surviving can be challenging. The main challenges are surviving harsh environments (heat, cold, radiation, toxicity, various types of storms and extreme night temperatures), your inventory capacity will never be enough so you have to carefully choose what is gonna be actually useful for you and of course, reaching the center which requires ship, exosuit and multitool upgrades as well as money (for potentially buying a new ship or buying a rare item or element)

    --Cons--
    - Mining and gathering resources can get repetitive
    - Crafting and upgrading can get really painful. For instance, in order to obtain a certain (and vital) kind of fuel, you have to gather certain elements, which then combine them to create an item, which you then combine it with another element to craft another item, which again combine it with two other elements to create your final desired item. And some of these things are really hard to find sometimes!
    - A lot of similarities between planets sometimes give the impression of discovering the same things over and over. For instance, theres a plant that can be found on every planet. It's just different colour each time. All the hate stems from this downside in my opinion, along with the next point, which is..
    - No multiplayer. This is not a game which you meet up with friends and you go destroy a huge freighter or even space stations and get tons of loot. Though I understand Hello Games of not wanting this to be an MMO, they could add at least some element of interaction with other players
    - NPCs prove useful but the animations of them could be better
    - Numerous issues with PC version
    - While ground and space combat is fun, it could be more elaborate.

It's not as good as we all thought it would be. But I really don't get all the hate. At the very least this game is gonna give you 20-30 hours of fun until it wears down for most people. I admit I was in the hype train for a long time and I let myself get a bit disappointed but No Man's Sky remains a good game. It's just not the hype level of good. One last thing. In the beginning it can be overwhelming for some, just be patient and understand that the game pushes you to find out how to do things by exploring.

The adventure is what you make it. This game will give you certain threads to lead you on easily. Don't take them. Explore. Read the stones, and translate. It's worth it.

The only thing about the game that sticks in my craw is the repetitive nature of the planets, flora and fauna. It's like they basically used the Lego model to put them all together. I would love to see an earth-like planet with cities and politics. Otherwise, this game is a paradigm shift in what a video game should be,

Typically with my game reviews, I have played a great deal and have collected my thoughts nicely for a, hopefully, well-written review. Let me say that I have played 5 hours tops of No Man's Sky. However, I can fully explain to you why you should not buy this incredibly disappointing game. Not only is it so disappointing, it's actually quite horrible.

    Wasted Potential
No Man's Sky is a sandbox survival game where you are placed in a vast universe of 18 quintillion planets. The main part of the gameplay is exploration. That's great! A game like this should bring back fascinating exploration with unique discoveries that you can actually make. But here's the other side to that coin (it's ugly): EVERY PLANET IS THE SAME. Yes, it is true that the scenery on every planet is different. However, the terrain, materials, surface, and special locations are all virtually recycled. Plus, the stuff you do on every "unique" planet is the same. What do you do on these planets? Well, for the love of God, it doesn't even deserve to be called gameplay. IT'S A WALKING SIMULATOR. There's gathering of materials (like Minecraft), yes, but you know what that goes to? TO KEEP YOU FROM DYING AND KEEP ON WALKING. Not only that, but the movement of your character is painfully slow and clunky. Now that brings me to the only thing in this game that I really, REALLY like. Flying around in your spaceship is awesome. This might be the best spaceship simulator in a video game. It really gave me a true sense of scale and discovery, like I was on the Enterprise. But who really cares about that when the rest of the game is so boring? Let's also not forget to mention that there is absolutely no guidance as to what you're supposed to do in this world. I don't want hand-holding in a game like this! However, I hear there's a "story" in this game. Not in my experience of playing! Nothing pointed me towards a "story" or set goal. There aren't even procedurally-generated quests.

    Inventory Management/Crafting/Trading
This is a big part of the "gameplay", but this will be fast to say what I think about this. The challenge and possible fun of inventory management is completely wasted since you barely have any inventory slots. I swear, you will hear "INVENTORY FULL" at least thirty times every hour. Also, the crafting is too simple and never feels worthwhile. So does trading. I could never find anything that sparked my interest. It's so stupid to know that a "big" part of this game almost always feels meaningless. Shooting, of course, doesn't fit very well into this part of the game, but it's still worth mentioning that it's terrible. The shooting is so bland and boring.

    What Did I Like?
TWO THINGS. Two VERY SMALL things that I pretty much forget about by looking at how painfully bad the rest of the game is. As I said before, one of them is flying in the spaceship. The other one is uploading your discoveries to the game's world. However, this gets old fast, mainly because of how there's no way to see what other people have uploaded in the game.

    What Else Did I Hate?
Allow me to explain how the planets in the game are "procedurally generated". Imagine going to 2 different planets in the game. The scenery and such is different! However, if you just switched the 2 planets' scenery...it would be the EXACT same. It's so pathetic. What really pisses me off is that this game thinks it can charge $60 for the 18 quintillion planets on display. You know what this game is? A non-free tech demo. If I had a physical copy of this game, I would stomp on it like the freaking Hulk. Okay, maybe I wouldn't do that, but if I could sell it immediately, I would.

    DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

The game could be a bit better with some simple things like #1. Why on earth does this game not mark landmark discoveries on your current planet.....or at the least allow me to instantly travel back on waypoints. It's extremely frustrating so re-search the same thing over and over just to trade. That's my biggest complaint by far just because it's such an obvious thing that should have been done. Also while it's wonderful that we can randomly generate ridiculous looking creatures we couldn't randomly generate different bases and buildings. It's all the same all the time. Aliens interaction is all the same as well. Now these 2 things could be a little less bothersome had someone taken the time to create at least the slight bit of variety. I also think it wouldn't have been to much to ask to put in more tracking stats.....such as I've mined x amount of gold and iridium. My next complaint is upgrades seem to be lacking as most of them aren't all that good. I've only had time for like 4 good play sessions since launch and I'm already bored debating to sell it and cut my losses or keep it while hoping they add to the game. I'm so bored in fact I paused so I could come here create an id and review the game. I honestly don't see what the creators have to be proud of other than the being able to randomly generate this vastness. Good job to them that's an awesome thing and one day someone will use that to build some really great games. The problem I see is that not enough things were created to keep that randomness truly random feeling. It's the same few items splice together just slightly different. That's the biggest letdown. I was excited for the game didn't have multiplayer expectations didn't have storyline expectations.....I expected what I thought was coming a huge game with plenty to discover only to find out that all those discoveries are way too similar to really be considered different. If I took a rainbow and made it a square then a circle maybe change around the colors is that really all that different?...No not really. Well sadly that's all this game is. He'll there aren't even that many different style ships or multi tools and those are the 2 most important things in the damned game. Really guys all those years and you couldn't come up with some different designs wtf. If I weren't hopeful that you'll add on to and enhance this game I'd suggest ya close up shops and go find jobs with companies that know what they are doing. I've log complained about the lack of variety in games as most of them are just clones of others doing this same thing with a different look and story but goddamn at least they make the effort to make it look different. P.S To you 10s not everyone that hates this game likes CoD alright? get that idea out of your minds.

This game, or should i say this "tech demo" is very very bare. In terms of content and stuff to do. If someone sold me this game at 30 dollars and told me it was early access id very much believe them. This game does not deserve any 10s. Please stop being over hyped and look at the game for what it is and not what you wanted to love.

    The basics:
Here's a run down of what you will do in this game. Mine and Explore. That is it. With the rare occasion of a dogfight here or there. The actual gameplay, is essentially you walking/flying around till you find any of the "?" locations on your HUD. While in between those destinations you can choose to look at rocks, plants, or animals. (if there even are any on the planet you're on) The first few times, it's pretty awesome honestly. But it looses its appeal, VERY fast. Soon you realize that the planet you're on looks almost identical to the planet you were on yesterday. Most people don't seem to understand how procedural generation works. This game is a good example to how it works in a simple setting. (This planet is green with blue trees and red water) (Next planet will have red trees, green water and a blue atmosphere) And that basic idea is how they get the supposed 18 quintillion planets because they consider even the slightest change as a new planet.
But i digress back to what you can "do" After finding outposts and alien artifacts and all that jazz. You can eventually upgrade your equipment. Your tool, your ship and your suit. Not with any cool tech or anything that's innovative.....its mostly just bigger inventory, with faster mining lasers and longer lasting life support.....to do what you were already doing but slightly more efficient. There is no reason to upgrade other than for the inventory slots. Nothing is saying " you can't mine this copper because your tool isnt powerful enough" you can mine everything regardless. So basically doing all the upgrades is mostly pointless.

    Graphics:
Oh boy, this one is mostly due to opinion i believe, but personally i think this game can run on last gen consoles no problem. Graphically this game is nothing to marvel at. From afar things look pretty amazing then you get about 15 ft away and notice it looks no where near that good. Mostly everything looks really bland and color saturation isn't that well done. IMO

    Sound:
The music is pretty generic, if youve seen interstellar, apollo 13, or any space based movie. You've probably heard some of the music.
The ambient noises though are very well done if a bit misleading. There are times where you hear noises preseumably from animals. Yet there is nothing around for miles.

    Issues with fandom to address:
"This game isnt for everyone its an exploration game! you CoD lovers dont get it!"
No, they get it. You're the one who doesn't get it. You're so blinded by Hype you can't see what the game actually is.

"18 Quintillion planets!? theres so much content in the game! so much to do!"
No, there isn't. Walking around and looking at stuff isn't the content people normally refer to. They refer to the actions you can do in a game. Where No mans sky has no actions. You walk around mine and upgrade. That is your sole game play experience. As for the planets, once you've seen 10 planets, you've seen most of what this game will show you. A lot of it is pallet swaps, and actually pieces of monsters/plant life switched on to different bases and called a different species.

"This game isn't for you don't vote it down because you don't like it!"
This game is flawed. Very much so. If you can't understand that you cant review games. This game has been hyped so hard people literally deflect negative reviews just to force themselves to love this game.

    Overall:
No Man's Sky, is not innovative, not entertaining, and not fun. It's sad to see a developer create a game in a genre where other games have succeeded in with little to no hype. Where this game falls flat on its face and hard.
Give it a try if you get the chance, but i would not purchase this at full price. Its worth playing and seeing for yourself but odds are, you will tired of it within 3-8 hours.

You define how you want to experience the game. Sure, there is some repetition but that is solely in how things are done. It's a beautiful experience filled with amazing music.

Let me give you an example, after a few hours of play. I decided I wanted to research the alien language. I have been exploring each planet, seeking out the alien wrecks, meeting other aliens and trying to find more words. It's been a blast. Along the way, I have been trying to build my standing. They have given me new items and gifts in this pursuit. A friend of mine is purely interested in gaining cash, he documents every single thing he sees. He goes to the space station, notes prices ans trades to build up a wealth so that he can buy whatever he wants. Another friend is out trying to visit as many planets as possible. He's committed to managing resources and exploring the universe, one planet at a time.

For those expecting a story, narrative, cinema cut scenes and the like, don't buy it. This is not your same old boring game that everyone else plays. I can imagine plenty on top of my head, how about animals that actually do anything? The only thing the animals will do is either stare at you, or give you a boring melee attack. How about an animal that spit fire, or shoot lightning bolts at you. Or a gigantic bird you could ride. Anything really. The aliens in the game dont do anything either, they dont even walk around for christ sake. They just sit in the outpost waiting to blurt random text at you. The combat with the sentinels are extremly lame and unsatisfying. There could also have been some other cool interaction included with NPCs, like training them to help you gather resources for example. Or breed animals, crossing different kinds to make new cool animals. Maybe there could have been things the alien could have done with the animals? Etc etc. Forget all of that, the animals dont even have proper collison-boxes to stop you from jetpacking right through them. The combat system in space is extremly simplistic and boring, no strategies like placing a mine or upgrading your ship to be much more suited for air fight than your opponents etc. Just aim and shoot and hope your shield dosent run out. There is never any reason to visit anything, leaving you with the feeling that no planet is really important to visit. They coud have made it so some planets had a really worthwhile thing getting but it was well protected, but nope. You will get bored with this games gameplay loop, which is basically mine this item at planet A so you can go to planet B and then warp to next solarsystem closer to the centre, in like maximum 5 hours. There is no multiplayer component to enjoy either, except maybe read what some user named an animal to on a planet. No way for you to build anything on any of the planets, to leave some kind of mark. And even if there was, how is going to find your remote planet? Probably no one. I bet this game will be just as lonely and deserted as its game universe is in 2-4 months from now. Im seriously doubting that hellogame can even save this game with patches as is now, as there is just so much lacking in this game.

Some riddles are based in mathematical concepts like geometric progression and number shift (I'm a engineer, I like it).
    The bad:
Draw distance of objects. The objects are often draw right in front due to lack of optimization in the limited PS4 hardware, what is annoying.
Some bugs in missions. For 2 times the game asked me to go to a place where that was nothing there.
In 10 hours of play the game freeze and crash once.

In overall, the game is keeping me very entertained and anxious for the fixes and updates to that massive and innovative game.

Given more time, I think they should have added more depth to the plot & the ground/space combat, which requires no skill, only better equipment. Other than that - have fun exploring it while it lasts and, for the love of god, learn to adjust your expectations before getting exactly what you promised and then rating it a 0 in frustration because it doesn't your insane expectations.

I then immediately realized my mistake. I was falling too far. I landed my ship on a FLOATING rock formation and it was far too high up to use my jetpack to get back to it. I was now on a hostile planet with Sentinels attacking me everywhere I went and the air was toxic so I was slowly dying every second. I had to figure out a way to get my ship back.

This meant that I would have to trek across the planet, scouring it for an outpost somewhere where I could summon my ship. Only problem is that on a planet-sized planet devoid of life you never know how long that could take.

I started off towards the very first question mark spot I had in my viewer as my suit's hazard protection rapidly decreased and if that runs out then your health quickly goes down. No problem, I just need to charge it up, except that I don't have any zinc to do so and this planet seems to have a zinc deficiency.

For the next 2 hours I fought sentinels, found caves to stay in and replenish my suit, found many upgrades and new blueprints to make the rest of my journey smoother, and swam in extremely radiated oceans until I found an actual outpost. It was probably my 20th question mark I had come across and it was an amazing feeling to finally summon my ship and be able to say I survived the entire ordeal.

The coolest thing about this is that the game created this experience for me based on my own accident and it was great. It is littered with this kind of stuff. I never know what I might find next and I can't wait to see where updates take it in the next year.

Love spending hours visiting POIs on colorful planets, love to seek shelter from poison rains or heat storms, love to learn languages of the aliens word by word. Yes, inventory management is not the best, but definitely not the worst I've seen. As everyone and their dog say: NMS is not for everyone. It's definitely not for everyone but the concept and gameplay as well as the epic scope warrant at least a strong seven to a light eight.

Their is no sandbox game that is as impressive as No Man's Sky. It combines next-gen graphics, with randomly generated galaxies, and a lot to think about. The lack of story leaves you to create your own back story, or maybe there is one secretly laid out for us.

If you can get passed the harsh learning curve, this can be a game that lasts forever. Especially if they add content like they said they will.

I think the biggest problem is the lack of danger from most of the wildlife. Games should be fun and this isn't. I've just traded it in got £40 trade in so not all bad.

But considering the modern market the game has to compete against in similar genres, like Minecraft, Subnautica and The Forest. (Which are all quite cheap) Make people completely forget just how big of a deal this game really is. It does still feel like a Beta. But the developers are some of the most enthusiastic people I've ever heard from, and they seem ridiculously into what they've created. They're definitely going to keep releasing patches and updates for this game. Which will completely change pretty much everything in the game. In my opinion, I think it'll end up being one of the most interesting and engaging games ever created. But right now. Wait until it's cheaper. Expand

This is a technical masterpiece, and pushes the boundaries what can be achieved with procedural system. You won't regret your first ten hours or so. But before long all the planets and animals start to look alike, and progression is a chore.

Occasionally the game generates something exotic; a toxic planet where the plants grow gemstones, policed by robots, or a bumbling creature I called the Jellyphant. The question is whether it's worth five hours of your life between each memorable discovery.

You should probably play this. Keep any eye on the inevitable DLC. And I want them to do a sequel. But keep your expectations low, this is not Game of the Year.

It doesn't matter that it's an indie game, they're still charging £40 for it and right now on PC it's very broken with hard crashes, regular lock ups and frame rate issues (even running on this 6700K with a GTX 1080) and that's before you get to the lack of game in the game. I started at 7/10 but after close to eight hours you can see it for what it is, a tech demo without substance.

What it isn't is a great game; they desperately need to sort out space combat, inventory management and controls (are you flying the spaceship or is it flying you?), Either way, you can only mine rocks for so long before you start questioning your very existence.

It's a passable game perhaps which with updates might become more interesting. Maybe.

    5/10 wouldn't hyperspace again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay A lot of people this game is not fun and there's no enough content, have you at least made it to the center of the universe? I am already 20 hours in and i haven't reach a little bit of the main quest besides there's a lot to do, there's a lot of lore like in other games like the souls series, the alien razes are unique, i would like more but there are unique in their own way, learn different languages is a grind on itself and it's really easy to lose time only doing that, the crafting works very well, obviously the planets sometimes feel the same because whe need some basic materials to be on every planet we go, like the carbon and plutonium. I would love that they make multiplayer making the game even more fun but i can live without it. The reactions the critics and the public are having against this game are because they hype the game as they shouldn't have, all the trailers show exactly what we where going to, so if you bought the game and are dissapointed because it wasn't what you expecting because of hoy hype it was, wit all respect you are an idiot and should feel shame for talking about this game, it's not perfect but it isn't bad at all, it is easiy the best game of this year and how Sean said this game is divisive and we are seeing that, he never lied, the only thing the game needs is a little bit of polish with some patches.

Besides guys a 12 person people made this game, that's amazing, it's something we have to recognize

So after 5 hours of playing this i can say that i pretty much saw everything in this Game. I just can't see myself playing this for like more than 2,3, maybe 5 days? I'll list some pro's and con's below.

    Pro :
    - Endless Universe to explore
    - Immersive Environment and just something new

    Cons :
    - Lack of Content (The game is about 2.5gb big as download file which doesn't change once installed - so you find out quite fast that this Game really doesn't offer that much of a variety.
    - Aliens look similar
    - After 5 hours you saw almost all ships you can get/buy, they only differ in upgrades, style and price
    - The "uploading" feature doesn't do anything besides give you credits. If you deny firewall access to this Game you can upload everything again after restarting the Game. It doesn't really upload anything, they could've named it "claim for discover" rather than upload.
    - Graphics are just terrible, just take a look at the ground it looks like someone threw up on the ground and was too lazy to clean it up
    - Plants, Rocks, Planets itself look almost same, just color difference
    - Biggest problem : Inventory size, you find yourself collecting stuff from loot boxes, yeah and then surprise they don't stack. You ship is full in the first 20min, so is your suit inventory. I found myself running around for like almost an hour before i could fix my starter ship to get off the planet.
    - The handling of the ship is terrible, you dont really want to use a and d otherwise you find yourself spinning like crazy.
    - Running feels like walking, walking feels like slow motion
-You can't even use the word "optimized" because it is just not. It's 30 fps capped upon first launch with low settings along side. I got a pretty decent pc and i face freezes, fps issues and bugged textures all over the place.

So in comparison this Game looks to me like an unfinished Tech preview of the Game. If you play it for like 2 hours you will ask yourself - "is that really it". This Game is just not finally done, but sadly it is. You can even harvest plants. You must shoot everything with your lazer which overheats like an cpu without cooling.

Full price worth? No definitely not, not even half price is worth. 15-25€ seems okay but still not fair for an 2016 Game which was hyped so hard.

Wait for an price cut, or get a pirated version since this Game (and the whole development) doesn't deserve this money. They first advertised this Game as mmo-based multiplayer which got played down and finally simply just edited in steam as "singleplayer".

Please, i hope they don't ever create a Game again.

My issues with the trending outlook on the game is the increasingly common use of 'it's boring' or 'there's not enough to do!'. Thing is, for some gamers the same criticism can be leveled at the likes of Overwatch, Hearthstone, Rainbow Six to name a few. Now I'm not saying these games are bad, they serve a purpose for the people that like that sort of thing however if you don't...then the enjoyment you'll get out of those games is slim pickings.

That's my reasoning for the high score I'm giving No Man's Sky. I had no pretence or hype train tooting going into this game and frankly the main thing that drew me in was the soundtrack. Having sat down and played it though I can attest to exactly who this game speaks to and why some of its limitations are okay.

Having played the game with someone who is somewhat 'casual' when it comes to gaming the first thing that struck them was the ability to explore and craft things (however limited you might suggest those mechanics are) without the imminent threat of being tea bagged by enemies and having to learn and be good at whatever combat mechanics are in the game in order to compitently survive. For some people that's all they really want from certain games.

I fail to understand why it's kind okay for certain genres to be unmistakably niche and be reveld in because of their 'gameplay mechanics' however when something comes along which is perfect as a chill out game or something just to enjoy for what it is.

The mechanics might be repetative for some but for other's it's therapautic and satisfying. The way some people have been carrying on seems outright unprofessional.

In short, go into this game looking for a chilled out experience which can be quite eye opening and fun if you let it be.

NMS is not going to be for everyone and isn't perfect but if you like Space Trading games like Elite or Crafting games, then its a pretty decent game.

I enjoyed Elite a lot and this is very similar in some ways, although not as complex but that makes it easy to pick up and play. There is plenty to do, from discovering Planets, Moons, Plant Life, Aliens (even renaming them if you like)

Item management can be a little annoying at the start but once you get upgrades and more inventory slots it stops being a problem. Space travel is really cool and can literally take hours (real time) unless you have a warp drive, which will cut that down to minutes depending on the distance, similar to Elite: Dangerous.

It can get a little repetitive in places so its good to mix up what you do but its also strangely addictive, making me want to keep playing to see whats at the centre of the universe.

I'm still addicted to the game, no other reviews can change my mind, and I don't intend to change any else's mind. I understand all of the problems people are having with it, especially how people are calling it repetitive/boring. I feel like that will be the case for me, but only in how ever many months it takes for me to do everything I can until the game become 100% repetitive for me. I've done so much but barely scratched the surface, I'm not even close to finding the Center of the Galaxy, or the end of the Atlas path (if there is one). I'm constantly upgrading my armor, ship, & weapons. Every time I pick up this game I have something to look forward to, though I know that wont last forever, so I'm just savoring it.

There's a lot of complaining about how all of the planets seem similar, well...no **** there's 15 quintillion planets. Yes, I know you can't see other people. Yes, I know Sean Murray said you could see other players 2 years ago, and no I don't care. When Sean recently tweeted "This isn't a multiplayer game so don't go looking for that experience", I believed him. I was never looking for that experience in the first place. On another note, everyone is talking about game crashes for some reason. So I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones who never experienced any crashes.

I'm not head-over-heels in love with game (anymore), I don't have some **** inspired hatred for it, I just think it's a fun game to play. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm entitled to mine, and my opinion is that Hello Games did a very good job creating their own universe and I can't wait to play more of it tomorrow.

P.S. there is a lot of review brigading, both good and bad reviews. So look out for that.

Even though a bit of my journeyI’m not entirely sure what the foresight was with regards to steadily incentivizing exploration- or even if there was one. With no real story, borderline nonexistent multiplayer, and a baffling lack of player implemented creativity (i.e. structures/bases, ship designs, and character designs) I found myself struggling to maintain the willpower to discover. Even though a bit of my journey was exciting and immersive in and of itself, my entertainment was exceptionally temporary as the looming realization of stagnant progress encroached evermore on my fleeting happiness.

    Further still:
-There are several mechanical bugs/glitches, render distance/pop-in issues, texture and clipping bugs, screen tearing, frame drops, UI and AI problems, and audio glitches
    -Frequent game crashes
-Game saves can occasionally fail to load/do not load properly
    -Unstable 30fps
-Simple RNG, even at the beginning, weighs too heavily on game difficulty (balancing issues)
-Cannot change (a remarkably zoomed) FOV, and options in general are fairly limited
    -Text “puzzles” are excessively easy
    - Inventory space is bizarrely small (and ease of management could be improved)
-Combat (in space and on the ground) is exceedingly awkward- as are the controls in general
-Planet, alien race/monster, structure, and ship designs too quickly exhibit their “copy and paste” similarities (perhaps inspect/change how planets in proximity are generated or add further biomes/textures/structures/races, etc.)
-Proper trading (with price forecasting per location) is contradicted by procedural generation (which further conflicts with inventory management)
-Interactions with aliens is simple, repetitive, and often completely trivial
-Indications of player taking any damage too closely resembles typical indications of player taking fatal damage
-Weather phenomenon is sometimes an underwhelming spectacle
    - And many, many more issues

I personally would not value the game at $60, even with the proposal of future updates (most notably base building). I would recommend waiting until the price drops (by at least 50%), and several patches iron out the more detrimental bugs. To really determine whether or not my criticisms would be sufficiently reflected in others, however, I’d encourage one to watch streams or pure gameplay footage (as opposed to tailored marketing videos/trailers). Surely, I would expect some to find this experience much more enjoyable and valuable than I have.

    Cons.

-A.I is very basic, to put it nicely.

-way too much time is spend in the inventory screen, sometimes during combat, like charging shields in a dogfight for example. It just kills the flow of the game imo. Also, not enough space in this inventory, making it a micro management nightmare.
-The robotic computer voice cannot be turned off.
-very basic, text based story telling in which the static characters you meet are very forgettable.

Much hype about nothing, a disappointment, a game so buggy that perhaps deserved to be published only as early access.

I managed to play ten minutes maximum before the crash, a tutorial beginning ... and not even seem bad!
A mix of resources research, crafting and exploration ...

Under these conditions € 60 is not worth it, maybe 15 for early access as a beta would be more honest.

Actually a rather boring game. Would work well as a screen saver, or a beautiful time-waster for loading screens, but as a AAA game it's not very good. RNG will usually fail relative intentional craft, and that completely happens here. Planets are largely the same, which is not what you would want from this kind of game - you'd want variety.

Despite all this, there are much to like about MMS even in its current state. The gathering of resources and upgrading of the suit and getting new ships, a bit of a grind if approached with the wrong mind set, is a nice part of the game. And I for one really enjoys this part. The Atlas quest lines is also a fine and intriguing part of the game.

While this is nowhere near what many had envisioned, player wise - obvious when looking at the review scores, had there not been so much hype this game would have score A LOT higher - but also developer wise. It's hard to ignore the feeling that PlayStation rushed the release - as where the case with Driveclub, which also tanked at release.

Perhaps developers should be more careful when choosing Sony as publishers in the future.

Their representation of the universe is inaccurate, every single planet i've seen is inhabited with life and/or vegetation, there are no gas giants, no ring systems, no barren planets, black holes are portals, and no variation of star types. But i'm not here to talk about that stuff you can easily confirm by watching some gameplay.

What i really want to talk about is how they straight out lied about it being multiplayer. The problem is not the fact that you can't see or interact and play together with other people, it's the fact that they said it was possible and it isn't. I'm perfectly fine with the game not having multiplayer, i play single-player games and i enjoy them. What i have a problem with, is they straight out lied about it being multiplayer, that is unacceptable, a game developer cannot do that and get away with it.

I am sick of these vague as f*ck tweets from Sean Murray implying something but not stating it clearly. It's just a series of shady moves they make over and over again, careful choice of words leaving multiple interpretations, misleading disinformation. They actually covered with a sticker the multiplayer icon from the PEGI score on the Limited Edition box. A few months ago the game had the Massively Multiplayer Online tag on Steam, only recently they changed it to Single-Player. After years of clearly stating that it was multiplayer, ONE DAY BEFORE the PS4 launch, they tweet that the game is not ''a multiplayer experience''.

Sean Murray specifically said on interviews you could see and interact with other players, and play together. Then on the first day it has been confirmed by two streamers that tried to meet up, they were in the same system, same planet, same spot, and couldn't see each other, for one of them it was day time, for the other one it was night time. And the kicker? Hello Games are celebrating that ‘’two players encountered each other’’. How can they be so deceitful?

Going back to the gameplay, the excitement lasts for about the first few planets, then the repetition sinks in, and you're left with a feeling of huge disappointment. You scan stuff, find some outposts, you mine materials, fill out your ship and your gear, run out of inventory space, go to the nearest space station, sell your sh*t, and then you move on the the next planet. That's basically what you do until you reach the center of the galaxy for a NG+.

To those complaining about the repetitive nature of the game-play: that comes with the territory of a procedurally generated games. It's simply impossible to create a game that builds itself without repeating elements - you're necessarily trading attention to detail for scale. This same issue is present in every other procedurally generated game out there, from the old-school roguelikes up through Elite, Binding of Isaac, and recently Necropolis. For some reason, NMS is catching this criticism much more-so than other procedural games, perhaps because many would-be NMS players were attracted by the hype and hadn't had much experience with proc

That's not to say that No Man's Sky has no unique features of its own... the ability to fly through various solar systems documenting various plants and animals does have an almost exploratory feel. However, the worlds and terrain quickly become noticeably formulaic... often lacking real differentiation from worlds already visited. The slight cosmetic changes do little to add depth to what is largely a fairly lackluster game.

The gameplay is a bit worse off in being formulaic... and there's precious little actual gameplay variety. Almost everything is geared toward gathering resources to upgrade technology, and repeat the cycle.

While that style of gameplay isn't necessarily bad, it’s certainly not worth the $60 price tag attached to the game... even with the nebulous promises of expanded gameplay.

In essence, SOE and Hello Games expect this $60 dollar game to be embraced in similar vein to early-access games... hoping that an already rocky launch will be overlooked, and potential customers will salivate at what might be, rather than what is.

Ultimately, it's the price tag the heavily brings down this game's score. It should have been priced more consistently with other early-access games... say $20 - $30 could be reasonable for a game that is, by all appearances, incomplete.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
