In the first hours I could find different aliens, learn words from their language, gather resources, sell and trade them making money to get more slots in my inventory and purchase a new ship plus creating different improvements that make my life exploring this universe easier.

There are not loading screens and you can just land in and land off anywhere, but in the negative side I have to admit randomization is not coherent... most things are weird or even ugly and hard to believe they could be real (not to mention physics) so I think a more controlled randomization would have helped to trust what I see.

It is been taking a while to see planets different from the one I started, but seems it is possible, somehow, from what I could see in other player's media. I had no luck yet but I'm curious. Seems like I need to travel further by improving my ship.

This game has a lot of potential but many people are complaining about it because they expected more combat, action, maybe even quests and a fast paced progress. It is not and was never expected it to be. You explore a vast universe, it takes time, it is slow… and rewarding.

Hello Games already announced they will allow you to build things in future patches so, as always in XXI century, this game will never be finished and in continuous evolution.

Game constantly crashes when uploading discoveries and warping and landing and the textures just take too long to load at points. The colouring of the game is an eye killer also.

However, good that this is the first of its kind in the genre of game and hopefully there will be similar games but executed much better in future. Did enjoy for a bit but once I got platinum on the game there's nothing else to do apart from keep warping to the centre of the galaxy.

Only thing you do is grind, grind, grind to get better stuff. I like to grind in games but i don't want to play a game that has nothing to offer besides grinding. It has to be a less prominent role in a game. This game is behind the interesting idea (on paper) so shallow and thin that it is almost unbelievable this game had a green light for a release. It's not a finished product. Maybe this game was better suited for something like a demo, a promotion thing of a game producer. To show what can be done with nowadays technology, because this game is missing it's core: Gameplay.
It's an unripe apple, plucked from the tree too soon.

And it is completly true. I've spend 6 hours full of exploration on my first planet just to feel the journey that awaits me. And this game fully satisfy my hunger of atmospheric sci-fi journey through galaxy (and beyond?) with aestetic of extraterrestrial scenery taken from Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Ursula Kroeber Le Guin's novels.

NMS is full of lore, it have lots of small "quests/sutuations/accidents" when aliens need you assistance.

This game keep many things simple. Space fight and travels, crafting system and survival just to be "very very chill game" which lets you explore and travel through space with pleasure but still feel tension and be aware of managing all the aspects of ship/suit/cargo etc.

Greate game to play after long busy day.

I only played around two hours from the game so this review is rough but I will be addressing combat, story elements, and exploration/space.

First off the combat is good. It does remind me a bit of Fallout. I was only able to fight with the mining tool. At first there was some difficulty aiming but after fighting several drones I got the hang of it. I found some alien pods. Inside I found a weapon on the shelf which was fairly expensive. At this point I was only 30 minutes in and I already found a new weapon which I was very curious as to how it shoots and it's power. This alone gave me the desire to find more guns and to upgrade them. Some crates that I plundered gave me some upgrades to my mining gun. One of the upgrades made my mining gun stronger which is awesome to see. It was not hard to make and it was fun seeing the added power to the mining gun. Your suit is also a key component to the combat in No Man's Sky. Early on I fought many police drones because I did mine that one cave a little too much. But all in all, I felt like I was given too much health. I was taking many hits at the beginning and I was barely at half health. Scaling of health and health upgrades should be changed for the better without a doubt. But like the upgrades for the mining tool, I appreciate the upgrades that can be used on your suit and their effects on combat. Mixing the crafting component with upgrades for the combat aspect of the game is done very well. It makes me want to upgrade more and to test out my gear in battles.

Now on to story elements. This is where the game excels in my opinion. At the very beginning of the game I was given three options when I approached this technology I found. I honestly felt like my choice really made a difference for the story I was playing. And making more decisions like this from objects gives No Man's Sky its RPG edge. I met my first alien near the beginning of the game in one of the alien pods. The alien and I talked, granted I did not know what he was saying, and I was given three options. One of them was to pet, another to feed, and the last was to give credits. Of course I chose to give the alien credits because I do not know their customs and what is appropriate for their race. And on top of that, money talks. The alien was very pleased which made me very happy. I felt like I was one step closer to this unknown alien race. The progression of story on this alien race soon became an important goal for me to attain.

Lastly, I felt like No Man's Sky's exploration and space is slightly a double edged sword. But still I love it. The game is huge and I am definitely one of those guys who loves to explore every point of interest. In fact I will even double check places just to make sure I have everything. Once I started playing I instantly fell in love with it. I was like a boy at the candy shop. It was exhilarating to discover new rocks and plants to mine with my mining gun. At one point I needed a lot of one type of mineral and I mined for about 10 minutes straight. I can see how this can get tiring for majority of players. It was not really for me because I am totally fine with doing monotonous tasks. So with this I am not going to judge whether this is something the game needs to fix because it is depends on the player. And also, if a player should have any problem with doing a task over and over, they could just upgrade their gear so mining can go even faster. I did this and I was appreciative of the upgrade. And here is the thing about mining for so long and gathering materials; it takes up a lot of space. And no I do not mean the space that is galaxies upon galaxies. I am talking about inventory. At the beginning this was a struggle to deal with. I had to constantly go back into inventory and either craft or throw material out. Good thing is that I did not have to throw out many materials because a lot of things in my inventory had a use. For instance my suit needed certain minerals while my mining tool needed other minerals to repair it. Nevertheless, it was still a hassle to deal with. What I do applaud No Man's Sky when it comes to inventory is the sections of inventory. Your ship, your suit and your mining tool all can carry materials. This was helpful and made sense. For instance, whenever my ship thrusters needed repairing I would repair it with minerals found in my ship's inventory and not my mining tool's inventory. It made sense that transferring things from my ship all the way to my suit would not work if the distance was too far.

In conclusion, the combat is good, the story elements are exceptional, and the exploration/space is still a bit rough. I loved the game and I am very thankful that my friend was able to let me test it out. I will without doubt buy the game whenever I get the chance. I am also excited for new updates that will enhance the game further. Never before have I wanted to explore a planet so thoroughly along with the vast No Man's Sky universe.

What I and everyone else believed it to be was the next big thing. Halo and Half-Life 2 were the next big things, changing the way how we saw FPS's. GTA 3 revolutionized the idea of what a sandbox could be. I thought No Man's Sky would change what games could be. It has the space to do that, but it currently has nothing other than the foundation dug out.

That's why I say in five years, this game will be one of the best ever. The developers have so much to work on, but if they follow through on their promise to provide free (or at least frequent) updates, it will turn out to be amazing.

You get a ship, fly to a functionally infinite number of stars and planets and worlds, upgrade your ship, suit, gun...and get to the center. It is amazing. Gorgeous animals, plants, planets, etc.

I tried to defend this game at first but its just so unfinished that I can't, this is still a fair review and here are a list of pros ans cons

    cons:
-The space stations are terrible. If they were going to randomly generate stuff they could have done it to the space stations as well, they are all the same, they are so empty despite being the size of the death star, with only two rooms to "explore" and one alien working there.

-There are only three different alien races, infinite number of retarded looking animals yet they only made three different types of alien, I don't even know why they bothered, there is no difference between the aliens except their heads. There's no backstory or conflict between the races.

-There's no cities or villages, they could have made some sort of undeveloped/savage aliens that lives in mudhuts or tee-pees or something, or some sort of villages with bars and shops or even big alien cities, instead you get the same looking buildings through out the universe with only ONE goddamn alien every time, and when ships lands at a trading post or something no one gets out, they just wait 10 seconds and fly off, giving the game a look of lifelessness.

-The random animals are terrible, they do nothing except walk around, they don't hunt or drink or eat or sleep. Seeing an animal is a big thing actually cause they're so rare, and seeing a big one is even more rare. I have yet to see two or more different types of animal in the same place.

-The inventory system is terrible, the fact that upgrades take up space is ridiculous, not to mention the fact that you run out of space in about 10 minutes.
You find all these blueprint for upgrades you're never going to use because they take up space and are useless.

-The planets are very samey, very barren, very empty, there are no jungles or tall mountains or crevasses or volcanoes or geysers, just the same rocky landscape every time, with a different danger like radiation or heat or cold or toxins but it makes no difference, your shield absorbs it all and you just have to mine more to keep it going.
And it's not like finding materials is hard, fuel is everywhere, is not a commodity you have to refine or buy or use sparingly, it's EVERYWHERE and very easy to get.

    - Space battles are extremely easy and dull, even if you do die there are no real consequences, just fly back to your grave and pick up all your stuff, you even have a way-point showing you where you died.
The big spaceships you see are pointless, you cant land inside them or explore them or hijack them, you can just attack them and probably get killed by sentinels.

-The game is marketed as survival. This is false there is no aspect of survival, no hunger or thirst or need for shelter. You can wander around for hours just refueling your suit and you won't die.

-The worst thing in this game is that it's so easy, but this is a sort of paradox: surviving, collecting resources, getting money is all very easy, but the end goal is pointless, there is no real motivation to get to the center, so it makes it difficult to want to play it.

    Pros:
I struggled to find these cause I want to give this game a fair review.

+The planets look pretty from in space (especially if you're on a moon).

+If you like to look at randomly generated stuff, you'll like it.

    +Black holes look cool.

But that's it. I'll admit this game was a victim of hype but the way it was marketed was extremely deceptive, they showed scripted things that you would never find in the game. Without even mentioning the lack of multiplayer this game is still terrible, and multiplayer/ co-op drop in aspect could have saved the game.
But this game is by no means worth the 60$ price tag.

While a few mechanics could be explained in-game better than they are, once armed with the right knowledge you can settle in for some grand space exploration and some occasional laughs from the resident aliens.

The science path (scanning life forms) is quite difficult early on and the rewards really suck for it. Can take forever to track down all the animals you need for the planetary bonus which is pretty meager. So you'll need to do some some trading and or mining and or crafting on the side to stay afloat. The good news is that all of those are well implemented and money is easy to make once you know how.

Could be that not everyone will love it but I suspect you'll know if that's you or not. If you enjoy survival games and sci-fi this game is so good it might ruin your life. Especially when you land on your first planet with seriously funky wildlife - for me that was the second planet in my fifth system. I didn't misunderstand the game. I knew that it was survival based. I knew that it was a slow paced game where exploration, gathering, and trading would be key. I get all that. The reason why No Man Sky is a dud for me is because Hello Games promised a gigantic universe to explore but only has about 1000 or so core assets - meaning this "huge" universe start to look the same within the first few hours.

My excitement dropped immensely when I landed on just my second planet and found the SAME flora asset that just had the name changed. The the SAME rock/Iron asset, again with just the name changed. Then the SAME minerals and crystals. The creatures looked almost identical, with variation so small I couldn't actually notice the difference (though to be fair, I saw more variation in creatures eventually.)

The first 10 planets I explored I saw repeats of the same assets over and over again, so I'm using my scanner to make this "new" discovery, and its just the same exact plant I've already seen 20 times, just with a different name.

THAT, friends, sucks. That is cause for legitimate disappointment. It doesn't matter how enormous the game world is if only 10% or so of it feels truly unique. After a while I starts to feel like basically "ah this is the green planet, that's the red planet, here's the blue planet -- where everything on it looks more or less the same.

Guess what's worse? The structures for every alien race, every outpost, every shelter that I visited in my 30 hours of gameplay use the SAME damn models. Talk about immediately killing any sense of vastness or difference or exploration.

The Sentinels on planets is also a let down. Every planet I've visited has them. Sometimes they are more aggressive, sometimes they aren't - but I never got to a planet where I truly felt like I was the FIRST to explore. Someone's always been there before me. It is also annoying has hell to have sentinels constantly interfering with your efforts to do the most basic things like harvest a mineral. And talk about repetitive. Sentinels follow the exact same script, in the exact same way, on every single planet I've been to so far.

I don't feel like I was confused about what kind of game this is. I feel like the execution on what the game aspired to be is unfortunately quite poor.

Like most releases on a single platform, you will find bad reviews from those who can't run it well on PC or those whose who do not have access to it on their platform of choice.

So,how does the game itself stack up to the mountains of media attention and fanfare? Hell, i could just end the review there but since there are far more issues and frankly you will probably see this game on my list of "top 10 worst games of 2016" list i'm just going to cut the **** and start my review.

    Problems:
1.Inventory UI looks like crap (not the worst i've seen, but i have seen much better)

2.Weapons energy gets depleted way too fast (hope you have a good cave to hide in because the start weapon is downright pathetic)

3.The game performs like **** (if you are going to delay the game for months, than it better **** work good at launch, i've heard everything from framerate dips while idling to the game just flat out not starting at all without crashing)

4.the progression is sooo slow (the amount of grinding for resources in this game is downright **** atrocius and here it just seems like the developers made it this way just to squeeze more time out of your hands)

5.the overall gameplay (at the very least in singleplayer) is extremely repetitive and boring

I swear, this is starting to remind me of another overhyped space FPA game (Destiny)

6.There are features that are just flat out missing (ability to name your own planets, multiplayer and co-op exploration)

7.The price,oh yea did i forget to say that this all 60 **** dollars and the fact that this game took 2 years to develop

In total the game just seems very desolate and unfinished,it feels like some **** i would see on Steam Early Access for free
and while some of the performance issues will probably be fixed in the future (hopefully) and Hello Games has stated that Multiplayer will be added later on it still doesn't excuse this game for being not only a huge let down but also a complete snoozefest.

My advice would be to wait until the game gets cheap, verrry cheap before buying it.

    overall rating 3/10

I'm nowhere near done and I'm loving the experience. I don't know where it's going, I don't know the real point. I haven't met more than one race of aliens but I think that this is just fun. Nothing more and nothing less. It's not the best game I've ever played but it's definitely not a 5/10 either.

The only strike against this game is its price. i think that at 40$, it would've been a home run. No one is mad at a quiet, exploration game with seemingly no point if they didn't dish out more than 40$. This game is 80$ plus 12 tax in Quebec. That's just too much.

Very happy that I own this.

It was easy to learn and use the basic gameplay/controls, the graphics are cute even though they appear dated, and the sounds are okay. Okay, now that I have said something good about the game. Let me tell you the rest.

This is a game of boredom with all the challenge, risk and excitement of a game of solitaire.

You start, alone, the only member of your species (you cannot see yourself and all others you encounter see you as being alien, plus the game gives you credits for meeting them, as they are ALIENS) with no other data, no story-line, no compelling reason to do anything. Game hints will let you fix the ship crashed next to you. Of course, fixing stuff is basically walking around and patiently mining and hunting without any challenge other than boredom. So, you fix your ship, you get to take off! Now you are in space, you can fly to another planet and mine it or explore it. Bored of the planets in that system? Hyperdrive will take you to the next system and you can rinse, lather, repeat.

Tired of planets? Check out a space station per system (or an alpha station) or fly around ships that only exist to shoot at pirates. Want to fight pirates? Not sure why, you make more cash walking around and mining with plasma grenades and the combat is simple and boring.

Tired of mining? Hunting for rare parts to make other parts to make other parts? Learn a language! One word at a time, through repetitive menus.

Tired of learning languages? Just move around and every 15 minutes you will complete some sort of journey item(distance traveled, words learned, aliens met) and the game will cut screen for 30 seconds to tell you.

Traveling to another system? Go get a soda, it is slow.

Oh, yeah, traveling. You can see how long it will take at your current speed to get somewhere, but can you skip the interim and just hop there? Nope, regardless of how many times you have been there, you will manually have to do it again. Walking, Spring, Jet Packing, Pulse Engine'ing, etc. it is all the same thing.

You would think that on a planet you would keep an electronic map with areas visited and such, but nothing exists of that nature. A universe with interstellar travel and no mapping tech?

Oh hey, I am bored, I can approach that animal and feed it carbon, it will poop diamonds! That was interesting once, not the 20th time.

So, yeah, so far the only goal is to explore and reach the center so you can start all over again. After fighting the crappy inventory system, the vague tech tree and the mind numbing mining I am not sure why anyone will be that much of a masochist.

This is a great UI, once they make a game it might be impressive. Running around trying to keep my ship and spacesuit fueled is a spreadsheet, not a game.

No man sky is great but not perfect, it's an exploration game where each planet is a discovery.

It's not for everyone, if "Enjoy the journey" describe your type of player, if you explored areas in WoW just because they looked cool you'll love it, if you play game for quests and directed content or for game mechanics you'll hate it. There are nearly no "quest" content and the game mechanics (Crafting, trading) are pretty bad.

Now even for exploration it isn't the "perfect" game. It's missing procedural generation for a few key things that would have made it perfect : station structure is globally always the same, there are only a few station / sentient ET design in the game (3), no generated quests or even randomness in actions possible by NPC (All NPCs in station type "shelter" do nearly the same thing). Also the star structures are pretty boring, often 3/4 planets, not gas giants, no planet very far or very big...
Even the planet grounds are pretty even, no big mountains, no profund caves, it's a globally flat world.
Also a strangely populated one, there are hundreds of 1-person habitats on each planet but no ancient ruins or cities.

But what's currently generated (Planetary color scheme, fauna, plants and a few variations on heightmap) is extremely nice and produce impressive results.

I can only hope for the game to continue like minecraft did, for years, adding small touches everywhere and making everything more diverse and interesting.

Now I'm almost 30, and I pushed off from a planet surface after mining it for plutonium. I looked for a distant moon to set up to see what structures could be on its barren landscape, but was set upon by space pirates interim. Space pirates guys.

NMS is a departure from the relentless bludgeoning the AAA industry has given us with FPS and adventure game ad naseum. It's something I didn't even think was possible as a kid, and it's a little frustrating to read so many negative reviews from kids who don't understand how lucky they get to grow up with this level of gaming at their fingertips. We could put some of you COD fans on a real space ship with NASA and you would be bored.

No Mans Sky has flaws. It does. Environments don't fully pre-load fast enough. It needs more diversity of life forms. The water graphics look like N64.

But No Man's Sky makes you the captain of a ship that's rendered in beautiful pop-art style and creates a gaming experience that could re-angle the gaming industry in a direction many of us have hoped it would go for sometime.

For all of you who reviewed this 0-5: Call of Duty 17 - More Kill-Kill Soldier, is coming out soon. For the rest of us, let's enjoy a game that's a mix of art, poetry, exploration, and freaking Space Pirates.

Anyone who has played "out there" will recognize the story set up and paths and what not, the inventory layout especially and even ship designs to some degree have made appearances here. Now this isn't necessarily a negative point as out there is a pretty decent game for a text based adventure. Its more like "this is the game that "out there" should have or could have or would have been under different circumstance". It also has a lot of aspects of games like "Galaxy on Fire" for space shipping and trading. The game does get repetitive but don't all games at some point? Is perfect for me. I have been waiting since they released the first trailer, and I haven't been disappointed with the story, the planets, the sometimes infuriating inventory micro-management. Where the game is currently failing is in Three Main Areas: [1] STABILITY - the game has hard crashed on the PS4 multiple times. In one play session it happened 4 times. I think I blew it up mining a massive resource pile, and exceeded the systems ability to manage the environmental change. Stopped short of strip mining the final time. [2] DATA LOSS - On the 4th day there was a late night crash. So I went to bed, started up the next day and had lost all progress. Normally this would be devastating. I had moved too fast, poorly handled the opening game play and was considering restarting that day, so I took it in stride. Ready to restart. That said, I DO NOT want to do it again. So I need to find a way to make sure I have a backup of my save. [3] TUTORIAL - The tutorial agenda isn't well balanced and handles disruption poorly. Second time around I knew I needed to build Warp Cores, and planned for it, building some items early. After getting the an early recipe for a component. I was forced to rebuild the pieces I already had to get them checked off and progress. Right now I am sitting on one tutorial that requires repair of the Visual Scanner, which I did long ago (right after I got the material, even before repairing my ship).
CONCLUSION: I love open world games so much and Hello Games delivered a game that fits exactly what I was looking to play. I am willing to overlook the initial startup pains of a new game. (I think it's more stable than several of the Bethesda games I enjoyed.) Solve the Stability and Data Loss issues and this is a 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If I was giving this a rating for the first 5 hours in game it would have received an 8/9 out of 10 but unfortunately it nose dives after that.

At first you think the planets are beautiful, you want to keep exploring, making new discoveries and meeting new aliens, you quickly realise however that nothing is new. You will come across the same space stations in every system, visit the same planets to gather enough resources to warp to another system where you go to the same space station and visit the same planets to gather more resources to warp to another similar system over and over and over again.

I've warped over 30 times, met 40 odd aliens and been through black holes but I've got no reason to keep going, I know that the next 30 times I warp will produce the same result, I'll end up gathering the same 3 or 4 resources on a planet just to warp the next, there is nothing left for me to see or do here in under 20 hours of play time.

Let me start by saying this game is a technological marvel, to a degree. The feeling you get when flying from planet to planet within a cluster, sans loading screens, is somewhat fantastic. But, the wonder ends shortly after you realize the lack of content in this game. Every space station is the same, every cluster of buildings of a certain type are identical. Every outpost that's been in disrepair EXACTLY the same. The aliens you encounter have little to no variety. And you'll never run across a place that feels...well, real. There's no real presentation of the alien culture in a way that's unique and meaningful. The loose narrative associated with the game's "Path" you can choose to go on fails to land home. The exploration of this game falls into a quick pattern that easy to see, and loses its charm almost exactly at that moment.
I really wanted to like this game... but for $60 this game feels like it's a rip-off. I've seen games like Starbound or Terraria put together better experiences with less, and at half the price. As is, I feel like this game should be about that price too.
It just feels incomplete. In making such a large universe made after such a small set of possibilities, they made the whole thing uninspiring.
I don't expect they'll really expand upon the game, either. They're a small studio with limited resources-- they'll probably be fixing bugs for the foreseeable future, and not be able to put in new features like multiplayer. Which was promised with the game's announcement, and many interviews with the lead developer, and didn't launch with the game at all.
    An overall disappointment.

No Man's Sky is an INCREDIBLE game and a true achievement in gaming. It's a hallmark, it's history, it's gigantic, ambitious, glorious, miraculous in its scope. It's just NOT the game we were promised. And it pains me to admit that.

My initial reaction was... WOW, this game is incredible. But after hours and hours playing, it was clear that this game is ocean wide and puddle deep. There is just not much to do. No quest, no sidequests, not much of a lore. Just endlessly wandering around, gathering materials, trying to upgrade stuff while you juggle your inventory slots. It gets so, so incredibly boring it's a shame. Basically this is a game about mining materials, managing inventory and walking/flying around from planet to planet until you reach the ultimate goal: "the center of the galaxy".

The game just has no purpose, no point and it saddens me to say that it got old really fast. It's a shame. If they had thrown in a decent story and some sidequests to keep us moving forward, this could've been one of the greatest games ever made. As of now, it's a space-mining simulator.

It's hard for me to state that this game didn't set out and deliver on what it promised. It was hurt more by the build up of expectations then on what it delivered. What this game is, is an archaeology survival space fantasy. If you go in with the mind of discovering and chronicling what you have seen. If you take your time to learn the lore of the alien races before pushing to the next star system, the game is much more enjoyable. Due to randomization your experience is going to vary. I have seen reviews of people finding nothing but desolate rocks, and other who have found nothing but abundant resources. This greatly changes the experience for an individual.

My personal experience has been a mix of everything, lush jungle planets devoid of species, rocks crawling with life and little resources. My first planet had sentinels on high alert, so I had to constantly run and hide for every resource I found, In fact, outside of an encounter with space pirates and attempting to protect a cargo fleet, that has been my only death. I have put in at least 25 hours since picking up the game on Tuesday, and am only on my fifth star system. Because, this is a game about exploring. It feels almost like a metaphor for life. We have a goal, we have an end, but what we make of it, what we experience along the way and how we enjoy it, matters more.

Bottom line, this is a game that relies heavily on what the gamer puts into it. It hits perfectly on the target that Sean Murray aimed. A choose your own adventure, science fiction, exploration, with a story that you have to go looking for. It was never meant to appeal to everyone. It was created to test boundaries and genres and I feel that even in this imperfect state it has done that.

I was initially hesitant to buy the game, even though I had been extremely hyped for it. The 60$ price tag seemed to steep for what I thought I was getting (mind you, I had watched almost no newer trailers because if I was going to play the game, I wanted to know as little as possible about it), but when my brother told me he had pre-ordered I jumped on the wagon too and I do not regret it.

The sense of wonder this game offers you for the first 10-15 hours is astonishing. While it all is procedurally generated, some moments manage to stand out and leave you in awe, motivating you to push further into space to see what's next. Coming back to the procedurally generated nature of the game, it also sometimes leaves you with something that feels undercooked. A few times I tried finding and outpost that had no doors, or a marker leading me to something that apparently hadn't been generated at all. Moments like these take you out of the fantasy and makes it apparent to you that you are playing a procedurally generated game.

If only there was something that could make up for that - and there is. The transition going from a planet and into space is seamless - you just get up into your ship and dart off, and it's amazing. When you warp to another solar system there is a pseudo loading screen where you'll see some yellow colors from the cockpit of your ship, simulating extremely fast space travel, when in reality you are not moving, but just loading the new solar system - but the illusion isn't broken and therefore it doesn't take you out of the space fantasy.

The space combat is very simplistic, but that is 100% the way it should be in my opinion. Putting layers upon layers on top of steering the starship as well as operating the weapons system would add unnecessary hindrance to traversing the galaxies.

The game has technical issues though. I don't know how many hours I have played the game for, I am guessing upwards of 30, but during those hours the game has crashed on me more times than Trump has gone back on his word (okay maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get the point) - I estimate somewhere in the late thirties/low forties.

This game could have been more, and what's there may not be enough for the majority of people. but despite the shortcomings this game still has me hooked and I've spent a multitude of hours flying through space so far, and I definitely won't stop until I get the platinum trophy on PlayStation 4 (which I am close to).

    It's difficult to review a game that technically could never end. How can you be sure that you have seen everything the game has to offer and provide an accurate, objective response to that? In reality, you could play No Man's Sky for hundreds of hours, but you would have seen the vast majority of what it has to offer after the first ten or so hours. Firstly, the positives;

I love that there are no huge storyline objectives, it is nice not to constantly have reminders popping up telling you to do something, I also like that the game doesn't really force you to do anything unless you want to (going to certain areas or progressing the very thin storyline). It is a relaxing experience, you fly or walk around planets, collect resources to make equipment / upgrades / quest items and to progress. You also have the option to scan the wildlife and upload to a database in exchange for credits.
The planets and creatures are procedurally generated, which makes each experience unique, considering the potentially infinite number of planets, is impressive. However, throughout my time exploring the solar systems, the planets and environments tended to feel a bit similar.

However, despite the relaxing nature of the game and the beautiful vistas it creates, it's novelty does wear thin after a few hours. It quickly becomes apparent that you don't really do anything. What you do in the game is repeated again and again. Fly to a planet, explore, craft items, explore a bit more, discover an outpost, get bored, fly to another planet. Repeat. None of the planets or galaxies seem to have exclusive items or components (from what I saw). In each galaxy there are different aliens you can converse with (usually giving them an item or purchasing an item), throughout each planet are monoliths that you can learn words from, unfortunately, all of the Alien races more or less say or do the same thing. Collecting the words felt like a pointless task, as from what I experienced, it doesn't have any effect on the outcome.

There is no doubt that the coding and development of the game is nothing short of extraordinary. As an experience, it's a fascinating one, it's just not much of a game. If the developers had spent more time fleshing out the storyline, making the combat more diverse and creating a game that is more exciting, it would have probably been the best game ever made.

If you're after an MMO, PvP, hardcore dogfighting in space or realistic graphics, step away; this is not for you.

Graphics are not photo-realistic, but gorgeous and consistent. The procedural engine generates an infinite variety of plants, creatures, and planets (although, of course, there are lots of similarities). On the PS4 at least the gameplay is smooth (even while streaming). My only complaint here is the visibility of "pop-in" as the terrain-generators do their work well within the draw-distance, but that's only really visible while flying over terrain at low altitude. As of the current (1.03) patch, there's a few minor issues (some misspelled words, height/weight of creatures transposed, etc) but generally not noticeable.

The interface is at times a touch clunky (can definitely tell it was originally designed for PC) but works well enough. My only gripe here is that there seems to be no way to set up hot keys to quickly reload or recharge your equipment. Instead one has to constantly jump into the inventory to do so, which can be a bit hairy in the middle of combat.

Walking around on planets is standard fare for FPS's (although no strafing movement) but for those used to racing through FPS maps the movement might be a bit slow. Personally I don't mind because that's what this game is about (for me) - exploring and enjoying, rather than racing from one POI to the next.

The ship controls are fairly basic - don't expect a full-featured sim like Elite Dangerous - but it works well enough. After some initial frustrations with dog fighting I've now got a technique down which gets results. Flying between planets and stations is quick, at most taking a minute or so (unless interdicted by pirates).

Apart from just running around on planets tagging creatures the player will come across aliens (whose languages have to be learnt), ancient monuments (which give riddles to solve in exchange for goodies), and a variety of installations which can be interacted with. The puzzles I've found so far have been much too easy - it'd be nice if they would adjust based on the players age, or adjust in difficulty to the player. But then I'm only on the first few planets.

There's an overarching quest or story involving the "Atlas", enticing the players towards the center of the galaxy. There's no particular rush to follow this course though, which is nice for players who want to spend some time exploring their starting systems / areas.

Apart from some minor niggles (which hopefully will get patched out), this game is a 10/10 for me.

    Done.

I'm in space, let's jump into another planet. Mine **** learn an alien language, try not to make the alien's angry, solve a puzzle get an upgrade for your multi tool. **** I already have it. Finish with the planet.

Jump to another planet do it all again. Visited all the planets in the system? Get a Hyperdrive, jump to another system. Do it again. Not once, twice, three times...BUT FKN A QUINTILLION TIMES!

If you're into botany and zoology naming animals and plants this is a game for you. I did a fair share of naming animals. Blade Headed Space Fox is probably my best species. Look for it on planet 'Why Did I Buy This Game'. (Btw that is the actual of my planet). Blehh

Graphically, stunning - not realistic, but graphically stunning (especially when in your ship).

Audio - simply mind blowing. Best played with a good set of headphones, for sure!

Those things are fantastic, until I sat down and did the maths of how many times the game crashed (with the 1.03 patch, mind you) when I entered warp - a staggering 25-30% crash rate!

I love the game, but i resent playing it, and fear progressing through the game.

Does it come close to giving you a world where the sky belongs to no singular human? HELL YES. There is so much packed in this game, exploration, trading, inventory management, upgrading inventory, "recipes," a slightly linear story possibility, but it allows you freedom to do what you want.
Do you want to find a story? Cool, do that.
Want to search for a planet with cute animals? Go for it!
Like flying around in space? Check, we got that B-Roll!
Want to find against dinosaur-looking animals, killing them on exotic locations? Yes, you can!
Want to fund Donald Trump to try to win the 2016 US Presidential Elections? NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOO! NO! That is TOO SPECIFIC. This game won't do that.

Pop on some acid jazz, triphop, or some ambient music in the background, put this game on, and enjoy your travels, Space Cowboy!

Even though it's a complete and deep game, we have the promise of more content to look forward to. I've sunk 30 hours into this game in two days and can't wait to explore more.

When considering the score for this game I asked myself a set of questions.

    1. Is it worth the $60US price tag that would normally come with a AAA game?
    2. 6 hours into the game, do I feel like I have experienced diversity, a repeated sense of wonder and a drive to do more to achieve goals?
    3. Is the feeling of immersion unbroken?

In answer to all three of these questions I would have to say no. $60 is FAR too much for a game in such a state. If I pay AAA prices the I expect a finish to the overall product that doesn't leave me wondering what could've been nor what the time frames for fixing it look like. Not only does it have an overwhelming feeling of rinse/repeat but since I discovered the simple process of harvesting Vortex Cubes I have now achieved the goal of a large ship so now what? The 'story' is so thin that there is no sense of achievement in following it beyond it being some direction. Interaction with aliens is so superficial that learning their language is a waste of time. In fact the only reason why I enjoyed monoliths was for the break in the tedium of flying around trying to find extra nodes to learn words. Finally the buggyness and sloppy feeling of flying has left me feeling like immersion is almost non-existent. You just start getting into it and then it starts chopping up. You approach a base and engage landing and it lands you next to a platform not on it!!!

Frankly I'm not interesting in what it could be, I expect that paying AAA prices means that I'm buying what it is, and what it is, is a $15 game at best and that's what I'd pay. However I would consider paying more for expansions and not feel ripped off. Right now though it's not a great experience and far too repetitive

No Man's Sky shines brightest when your boots are on the ground of a planet and you're wandering around collecting resources, scanning animals, plants and rocks and spelunking in a cave. Bizarre design choices not withstanding (like not having access to a map or being able to set waypoints on a planet), this is where I find myself enjoying the game the most. However, the actual in-space portions of No Man's Sky leave a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, if you want a good space sim where you can be a bounty hunter, pirate or a trader and actually have a meaningful game experience then there really is nothing to see here; maybe try Elite: Dangerous instead. That game has a much more nuanced flying experience, an actual functioning inter-galactic economic system, warring factions to join or oppose and actual maps and other UI systems to keep you informed and engaged with the content.

Unless Hello Games does some major work to completely retool the space portion of this game, fix their lack of maps, waypoints and necessary user interface options then it will remain a very one-sided experience and will continue to be only half of a potentially awesome game.

Yes the games world creating algorithms are on a good side, worlds feel different sometimes more sometimes less. Sometimes its just the colors, other times its everything. But this is really not a problem because well they look different and its good, the main thing that is bad is everything else. Every space station, every ground station, mystical places they are all the same. I do get that sure it cant produce millions of difrrent stations, but when theres only like 2-3 types of markets and stations its not that awesome. And well ofcourse all the lies. You cannot play with other players, its a solo game and once you finish it theres really no point in doing it again. For me I just see this game as a lot of steam's early access and green light games. They start of as a kickstarter with early access you have to buy for 20$ and they make promises of what its going to be like it look awesome, and then it slowly fades away and the devs just randomly disappear. Don't mistake me the game is good for a single player run, to try something new, and to play and explore. But not for 60$. At best this game is an indie single player space adventure worth of maximum 30$ or 30eur. But not 60.Why? 60$ is a triple AAA game prices, so go look at the talents of witcher 3 on how a game is made and how much content is put in it. But that's money well spent. You may attack me for telling this and no man sky was a small company with I believe 13 people to begin with. But that is not an excuse to charge 60$ 60Eur for an indie game for the full price of an AAA. Expand

I've heard people say it's a "make your own fun" sort of game, a la Minecraft before Notch decided to tack on an endgame. However for there to be emergent gameplay one must first have a broad pallet of game mechanics to play with. This is exactly where No mans Sky falls down, there is very little to do and very little variety in how you do it. If you could clip along at mach 3 blasting space dinosaurs, or carve your name into the side of a mountain I can guarantee this game would not be getting bad reviews.

What is there plods along at a snails pace, walking feels like crawling, sprinting feels like walking and even the bad-ass stiletto hulled space-ripper ships amble through the atmosphere as if they were pleasure craft. There are a host of other things that one would thing should never have made it out of beta, ruins are less useful than knowledge stones. One of the atlas path goals requires that you spend hours documenting every living thing on whatever planet you happen to be on, the puzzles are kindergarten grade easy, and every single alien encounter plays out in exactly the same way. The sound design (which I have seen others laud) consists of generic muzak, overlaid with random animal cries and mechanical nonsense that has no bearing on whats going on around you.

I can forgive Hello Games, they are an indie studio with indie budgets and indie mindsets. What I'm less inclined to forgive (and we as gamers are as much to blame for this) is having them dragged out twice at E3, hyping this thing into the AAA it isn't, and me traveling round 3 different retail outlets to find a boxed copy for £40. This thing ought to have been £15 digital only, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this gets pushed out onto PS plus as a freebie in the next 12 months.

They should have done 100 different legs, body, eyes, face, etc that way when the new planet with life you land on would have a greater chance on not looking the same. The same could be said about the planet generator as well.

The big set back is there is no REAL multiplayer and Sean Murray is very contradicting with multiplayer. He said you would be able to meet other players but there's a extremely small chance but then says its not a multiplayer game. The game info on the game case, on steam, and on PSN all say 1 player. To top it off 2 players got to the exact same spot on a world yet they could not see each other like Sean Murray said they could.

Verdict: 4/10 - Its a great game if you just want to relax and explore space in your spare time but there's lack of content and poor random generator. No multiplayer which could've added more hours of fun being able to explore with friends or a random person you come across.

Without spoiling anything No Man's Sky's ending leaves a bitter taste in the players mouth making all of their hard work feel meaningless. That being said the journey to get to that ending is where the true game exists. Encountering new alien species, finding resources throughout one of the quintillions of randomly generated planets, and even spaceship combat. Where No Man's Sky succeeds is also where it unfortunately falters. Early exploration feels exciting and new, but upon further inspection becomes repetitious at best. Planets begin to feel like nothing more than re-skinned color pallets of ones that came before, and new animals you discover rarely differ much from ones you've seen already. That being said No Man's Sky is still an enjoyable game, albeit a little buggy at times, and with it's faults I never found myself regretting the purchase. I immediately avoid all flight combat as quickly as I can because of how terrible flight is. On foot shooting is lifeless. Point in a direction and your shots auto home to your enemies. Crafting is annoying to understand at first and then horribly tedious to use once you figure it out. Creatures and sentinels spawn in magically after you are a specific distance away. You can kill thousands of them (both) and they'll keep respawning in the same area.

However the worst part of the game is the exploration. This is what the game is being sold on. Exploration. There's nothing to explore. Every cave is the same. Every ocean is the same. Every outpost, every space station, every radio relay, the same. Creature generation is terrible. I've seen the same crab on about 10 planets already with a slightly different head. Graphically the game is horrible. Bland textures just about everywhere, even on highest settings. Pop in plagues this game. Games like No Man's Sky don't come along all that often these days. At its core, it is a Space Trading game like Elite, but there are also the post 2000's gameplay from Minecraft. And simplified games systems which mean you can do pretty much everything right away. Because of that it actually stops being 'just' a trading game, and instead encourages you to explore new worlds and seek out new life wherever you find it. The reward the game gives is not instant gratification. Like minecraft without the building, No Man Sky delivers exactly what we wanted from a exploration game.

Comparisons with Elite are most stark, the exploration part of No Man's Sky is dialed up to 11. Within in a single play session, you can be walking along the surface of a densely lush planet. Mine for Gold, jump into a pool of water, swim around and discover new life. Then Jump into your ship, cruise around the surface of the planet, and locate ancient ruins, or settlements, or trade stations, or the countless other things that are all over the planet. Then with a simple pulling back of your joystick and boost out you fly in orbit around that planet, mine asteroids for fuel and then FTL to the station in the system to trade all your found goodies. Meet intelligent lifeforms and learn there language. And all that, before you ever hyperspace to another star system. Just like Elite, No Man's Sky boasts a near limitless bounty to explore. But there is also a thread of a overriding quest involving the 'Atlas', guiding you to who knows what and where.

On top of all of that, you can name every system, every planet, every species of flora and fauna you come across. Every settlement you stumble upon. (just make sure you 'save' your game at an outpost or you will be refilling in those names!!

For me, No Man Sky is easily the most original, most addictive and most humbling of titles. How a 10 person team of coders have accomplished this, is beyond me. The level of sophistication and polish puts this way beyond what we have all come to accept in Indie titles.

Are there things that I want to see improved? yes, performance whilst on my rig is pretty much flawless. On the more busy planets frame-rates go sub 30fps. And there is the very occasional 'pause' when there is a lot happening. But these are forgivable gripes.

So because of that, I will be awarding No Man's Sky a 9/10. But also should say this is a 'MUST BUY' for every budding explorer out there.

I see glimpses of what cold eventually be an amazing exploration game, but will the end result be worth the wait? I choose not to continue playing what appears to be a beta edition of a game and move on to other horizons.

This game is exactly what I thought it would be. An interesting space exploration game. I love it for being just that, and I feel like that's how the developers pitched it. If you go into No Man's Sky expecting any more than that, you may be disappointed.

Long story short: If you love exploring, try this game out. If you are looking for action, you should probably pass on No Man's Sky.

I've played No Man's Sky for about 20+ hours and I will say this: This game is beyond any doubt the worst PS4 exclusive I've ever played. It's boring, repetitive, and has crashed on me at least 10 times. And the worst part is it's priced at a full AAA release of $60. DO NOT waste your money on this game.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
