What a breath of fresh air! I really loved every single minute playing No Man's Sky, and I'm probably not going to stop for the next months (till Skyrim remastered is out, lol)

Seriously enjoying this game. I can't wait to see what other random planets have in store in terms of wildlife and flora! The exploration factor was always advertised as being a massive part of the game, and it had me completely sold. It kinda feels like I'm exploring part of the universe from my own bedroom. Great times !

After 2-3 hours you have seen all the planet forms and creature designs. They vary a bit but the pattern is very recognizable. So the fun of exploring stops there. The "gameplay" elements are repetitively and get boring fast.

Out of Solidarity to No Mans Sky... This gets a 10

All the Haters clearly don't read whats right in front of their face. The game is purely an exploration focused title in an immensely large, procedurally generated universe.

Everyone give this game a 10 so we can correct this ridiculous metacritic score

I was always very skeptical of this game due to a) the ridiculous hype surrounding it which, let's be fair the developer did nothing to play down and seemed to revel in it instead and b) that letter from Sean Murray to the reviewers on the day of release (have faith in the game man!!!!!), but as I said I am really enjoying this having never been or will be a fan boy of this game. If you've ever yearned to explore amongst the stars in a one man/woman ship then this may be the game for you. Also, the procedurally generated music (how I don't know!!!) is beautiful too. Expand

Mining same resources just to warp to another solar system, where you go on similar planets, to discover same outposts and mine resources, to get to another solar system... Also, the diversity of planets is not what I expected. First couple of planets were somehow different, but then I started to discover planets, which were just re-skinned versions of basic planet archetypes. Toxic planets, radioactive planets, ice planets? Only difference is logo above the shield and exosuit alert message. Behavior is all same - it just reduces protection level continuously. Every animal and every flower is almost same and acts the same. On planet 1, you get cow body with dog head, on planet 2 you get cow body with chicken head. On planet XY you get cow body with head XY etc. What is the point of discovery, when everything you can discover is just some randomly generated stuff with no logic in it? What is the meaning of discovering caves, when there is no secret at the bottom? From technical point of view, game is really good. I really enjoyed views on some planets. But as I said, it is fun for couple of times, but really boring after a while. This game totally lacks diversity and meaning. Expand

No Man's Sky - the most beautiful screensaver ever. As much game content, though, as two lego pieces.
It is a real nice (space) walking simulator that holds most players' attention for at least an hour.
Brilliant decision by Sony to prevent pre-release reviews, as most gamers would have cancelled their order after seeing what they will buy. I expect this game to break records - in Steam

Just because your game is a technological marvel and a programming masterpiece doesn't excuse you from the actual GAMEPLAY side of development.

This game was made to impress developers and show what could be done, but I can't recommend for any gamer who isn't in the game design industry to buy it, because the time wasn't taken to make the game an enjoyable experience for them.

Everyone that is giving it anything lower than a 6 didn't manage their expectations, the game sets out exactly what it said it was going to do and it does it well.
The only frustrating aspect is the constant inventory management and that gets better as you go.

If I had to sum up everything in just one line it would be this: "You are thrown into an infinitely expansive and beautiful universe only to find yourself utterly alone, doomed to never sharing the vistas with anyone."

A shorter one-liner would be: "A huge environment with very little content." Here's the breakdown: Pros: - An incomprehensibly large universe to explore.
If I had to sum up everything in just one line it would be this: "You are thrown into an infinitely expansive and beautiful universe only to find yourself utterly alone, doomed to never sharing the vistas with anyone."

A shorter one-liner would be: "A huge environment with very little content."

    Here's the breakdown:

    Pros:
    - An incomprehensibly large universe to explore.
-Beautiful sights on some planets and in space.
    -Ships are fun to fly.
    -Naming new discoveries is fun.

    Cons:
-Resource gathering and jumping from planet to planet gets old after just a few hours.
-The quest to get to the center of the galaxy feels like a chore.
-Despite initial impressions, game-play is quite basic and shallow.
-Survival elements are more annoying than they are engaging.
-Many planets are very similar to one another with just different color schemes and textures - no doubt the result of procedural generation of content. The same can be said of the many creatures you encounter.
-The loneliness in a game this huge is unbearable. Having some form of multiplayer such as PvP (dog fighting) or maybe multi-crewed ships and landing parties would go a long, long way to keeping interest.
-There is no incentive to getting a better ship because when you do, you loose EVERYTHING from your old ship including warp fuel and cargo!
-You are only allowed to have one ship.
-I've encountered a few game breaking bugs including falling through the ground on two different planets.

I was so pumped for this game and unfortunately I feel let down. I had boasted that this would be the game to beat this year and that I'd finally have something else to dump a ton of hours into outside of WoW. I think after a mere 9 hours of game-play, though, I'm done. Hopefully the devs can add more content and more things to do in the future. If/when that happens I'd be happy to re-evaluate and change my score!

It is pretty obvious that the hype around this game was all about the scale that it offers to players. and yes it does deliver the scale Hello games was talking about. Its varied, huge, endless and it gives you the feeling that you are actually travelling the endless space.

However when it comes to gameplay aspect it pretty much lacks lots of things and it is mainly due to the fact that after a couple of hours the game feels pointless. You start as explorer, only quest you can officially squire is to find center of galaxy. other than that you are just another traveler. There are no other quests that you can obtain. The game is all about exploring planets, gathering material and upgrade yourself in outposts through the galaxy. This feels good for a while as you start to feel more powerful through your journey but in some point it comes to mind what is the point of becoming powerful when there are not any obstacles on the way ? such as small quests, boss battles and so on. Or even some story related quests. Atlas pass and star battles are interesting for a while but they become boring as there are not story and questing aspect in them. So it all comes down to a lonely pointless game! and the reason behind that is that 1. It is a single player but it doest set itself as survivor or an action game, its lost in between because from both of those genres it lacks relevant content! (e.g no quest, no building houses and so on) 2. second reason is that it seems it was not a good decision not to have multiplayer ! you cant complete with others, you cant explore with your friend, you cant do anything with your friend. Only because of this two reason it is easy to understand how much the game is missing in terms of gameplay content.

just imagine if you could have build space outpost, houses on planet, meet your friends and so on. It would have been amazing. and I hope Hello Games think about updating game with this sort of content. NMS is such a gorgeous game, fantastic visuals, amazing variety and huge scale that is overwhelming at first. but shortly after you will realize its a small game.

Finally, I believe that NO MAN SKY is a product of technology, a test engine that shows you what future games can hold and how big they can be in scale. other than this unfortunately NMS falls into category of a average game and it is shame to see this has happened to a game that holds an amazing potential in itself.

My game has crashed about 5 times now. Basically the game is buggy and glitchy and it crashes a lot. Also there is A HUGE arsenal of ships, multi-tools etc. This game is truly amazing. The alien races have their own languages which you can learn overtime by finding monoliths or knowledge stones which can teach you a word each time. Also I don't exactly know why people are crapping on the FOV (field of view) it honestly is fine in my opinion. I can go on for hours about this game and the good and bad things about it for me it is slightly above average but it is not a system seller for the ps4, but i highly recommend this game. Expand

The game has no story, but there is a reason why Sony was harsh against early leaks and stream impressions from this game -- it was because they did not want the bad word-of-mouth to spread before the hype machine squeezed all the dollars from the suckers that buy this game at $60.

Many people have legitimized high review scores by discounting the low review scores that many others have given. A common rebuttal to negative commentary seems to be "Well, this is an exploration game, you obviously don't get it and Hello Games told you how it was going to be." That's not a valid rebuttal in the slightest. A common rebuttal to negative commentary seems to be "Well, this is an exploration game, you obviously don't get it and Hello Games told you how it was going to be." That's not a valid rebuttal in the slightest. Exploration is about finding new things, and while each planet is technically unique many of them feel extremely similar. Each planet is of a single biome. While Hello Games told us this would be the case, it doesn't excuse the fact that it makes planetary exploration fairly dull. While there are certain outposts placed on many planets for you to find (once you've seen one outpost, you've seen all of them). A level of diversity on the planets, mountains, rivers, deserts, etc. accompanied with varied wildlife for each of these biomes would give more reason to explore a larger amount of the planet. Currently, once you land on a planet you pretty much know how the rest of the planet looks like. Since everything you find is pretty similar, it's hard to even call this game an exploration game, and if it is it's most certainly a poor one.

The combat mechanics of this game, both on land and in space, are absolutely abysmal. Framerates drop during combat, making aiming even more difficult than it already is. Space combat is boring, simply turning in circles and shooting at each other with each pass. The survival portion of this game serves mostly as a nuisance. With all of the resources that you need being incredibly common, there is no struggle to survive, which is not interesting at all. Since there is no struggle to survive, it's pretty difficult to call this a survival game, and if it is it is a poor one.

Since No Man's Sky both of its genres poorly (exploration and survival) if at all, I question whether this is really a game at all right now. At the moment, this seems like a very elaborate procedural technology demonstration with very undeveloped gameplay elements. There is limitless area for you to fly around in, but there's really not a lot to find. Unfortunately the way people will view this game is a function of the hype surrounding it and it's AAA price. Without the hype and the $60 price tag, I think you'd see a lot of 6's or 7's for review scores, but when you build it up and you charge this much and fail, the fall hurts a lot worse. To me, I view this as being a bad product regardless of the price and hype. 3/10

What appeared to be beautiful at the initial reveal at E3 2014, is not. The games textures are inconsistent. There is a nice amount of alien life to be found if you can get close. The fact that I couldn't crash my ship even when I try is ridiculous. This game has turned out to be one of the most boring ones I ever played. After playing for 6 hours i am bored. Game play is repetitive. Controls that help you navigate are not mentioned except online.no apparent auto navigation on planet even if you've ben there before have to take 10 minutes to fly there

Planets are very similar. A big yawn

In my opinion people are being way too hard on this game. I think expectations were just unrealistic. Of course it's not for everyone, but for those that like to explore and don't like boundaries it's a fun journey. Now, I've only played about 6 hours total and yes I could see where the novelty won't last forever but I'm having fun and still have lots to try. I actually like the alien lore stuff and the language discovery. Sure I want more variety in planets and life forms but honestly I'll bet that comes in patches and DLC later.

It compares most directly with Elite Dangerous. That game is ultra-realistic in flight, but you can't really do anything interesting on planet surfaces. NMS has arcade-like flight but you can land and walk around. Both games are good in their own way, but even if the two developers combined their experiences it still wouldn't be for everyone. If this isn't your type of game, just don't play it.

I rate a game's value based on the cost divided by the number of hours I enjoy playing it. A theatrical movie costs about $12 and I get 2 hours of enjoyment so that's $6/hr. I'm just scratching the surface on NMS and my $60 @ 6 hours has cost me roughly $10/hr so far. By the time it gets old it'll probably be pennies an hour, so in my book that's a "good deal".

I will say this is exactly why review embargoes are a BAD idea. With a highly hyped game it encourages SOME people to get the game sight-unseen and then hate it and rant. If reviewers had received their copies a couple of weeks ago they could have published reviews explaining that it IS a resource gathering game and that the gameplay is simplistic compared to something like Elite. Then people who aren't into that sort of thing could have decided it wasn't worth their money. As this was handled though, a lot of people are going to feel burned (thus the review backlash).

I've tried finding good in this game and the only way I can is the concept; the emphasis was on exploration, but predominantly it seems survival is the main focus. So many things you must keep active and recharge just to survive. And because of this, it takes away from the fun factor of exploration.

The best way I could describe the feeling is that it feels like a 'play to play' game ... you are forced to play this game and mine materials and do exactly how the game wants you to or else you're out of luck and can't advance at all even if you just wish to roam the planet looking for stuff.

This game isn't for the majority of people. The fact that Sean Murray said it has 'hundreds of hours' of gameplay and I barely made it to 2, makes me question just what they were doing when they made this. If you enjoy this game, good for you, but the repetition for many will set in early, and if you're like me, you'll see the non-vibrant planets and the non-intelligent creatures that just feels tacked on and for all intents and purposes, falls flat.

No Man's Sky was, unfortunately, bound to disappoint certain players. After nearly 4 years of hype, this small development team ultimately had to answer to expectations which were not properly checked.

At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration and survival game. Most of the story is implicit, something sorely lacking in modern gaming, and which is in this case, gracefully executed. You begin with a crashed vessel, which you must repair before taking off into space, and the story is told through your inevitable desire to survive, to analyze.

There is NO handholding in No Man's Sky, again, a refreshing deviation from AAA gaming in 2016.

Exploration is done gradually, usually incentivized by the discovery of a faraway marker, or alien "monolith". Through these discoveries, you learn the languages of the various races of the universe, making it easier to communicate with them, understand their requests, and solve their racial puzzles.

There will be some combat during your journey, either against space pirates, or the "space police" which monitors your acquisitions from a planet. More diverse fauna and flora means tighter policing, an interesting nod to real-world preservation techniques. Yet combat takes a hard back seat in this game, and players should be aware of this.

There are some drawbacks in the early hours, to this exploration mechanic. The lack of inventory space early on means you'll often have to make return trips to Outposts in order to acquire that which you ultimately really need. But the system taunts you with bigger ships, more space, and in that sense your gradual assent from young explorer to inter-galactic merchant is rewarding, if not often steep.

Ultimately this is an ode to discovery, a relaxing intergalactic journey where the acquisition of resources is meant to take up most of your attention, not hi-speed chase sequences out of the Star Trek universe.

No Man’s Sky effectively portrays the loneliness of space by providing so little for the player to do that it’s tempting to flush one’s self out of an airlock just to break the tedium.

Not that you can do that. That would be too interesting.

After all the hype, all the promises, all the boasting of procedurally generated wonder and dynamic encounters, Hello Games’ “ambitious” spacefaring game is little more than just another crafting and survival experience, more about performing mundane, repetitive tasks than providing unique and exciting encounters.

If you’re not sick of the hundreds of survival games out there already then No Man’s Sky, with its endless resource collection and irritating inventory management, might be for you.

For anybody else, the allure of hopping from planet to planet just isn’t all that intriguing – once you’ve completed a long and dull journey from one world to another, you’re going to touch down and basically do what you did everywhere else.

    02

The game’s biggest feature – that no one planet is the same – means very little when your interactions on each one are practically identical.

Yes, there are dry planets, watery planets, cold planets, stormy planets – but they all adhere to the same simple rules. The major difference between a poison planet and a nuclear planet is the fact you’ll get a different logo next to the timer that tells you how long you can stay outside.

The animals, mixed and matched quite obviously from a pool of recycled body parts, can be fed to uncover rare materials, but you can’t do much beyond that. Aside from the few that are hostile and prone to attack, the animals are just there to look weird.

Upon encountering a large, dinosaur-like creature, I proceeded to use my **** jetpack (and boy is it ****) to ride on its back. I thought that would be fun. Instead, I just fell through its back because it had no solidity, leaving me to sigh and return to yet more mind-numbing resource collection.

My disappointing experience with the dinosaur has come to exemplify No Man’s Sky‘s biggest problem – everything is so obviously faked, so unabashedly illusory. The universe is devoid of credible, tangible life. For as much as the game promises dynamic adventures, everything is scripted, static, held in place like cardboard cutouts in a fairground ride.

Sentient aliens met along the way are never found just wandering the land. They remain stood or sat in place like static quest givers in an MMO – without the quests. Every now and then, other starships land nearby, but nothing ever gets out of them. To interact with their pilots, you must interact with the ship, at which point a character model pops up and you can have a text-based conversation with a pop-up character model.

The world of an average Elder Scrolls game may be far smaller than No Man’s Sky‘s galactic sprawl, but it’s inherently more meaningful, vivid, and lively, because it actually has stuff to do and people to meet.

    03

No Man’s Sky is indicative of a big problem the games industry has – conflating the size of a game’s world with the quality of its character. It’s yet another game that pushes scale above everything else, but when it comes down to actually playing the thing, sheer landmass doesn’t account for much.

I simply do not care that I can explore a universe when that universe contains animals a mere window dressing, lifeforms that stand affixed to one spot, abridged visual novel confrontations, and an endless need to shoot rocks and trees to continue micromanaging every banal detail of my character.

The endless collection of resources needed to refill multiple fuel sources is a total drag, but it’s really the best bit of substance the game has to offer. An incessant journey from planet to planet, zapping carbon and iron out of plants and stones so you can journey to more planets in order to zap more plants and stones.

This constant feeling of chasing one’s own tail for the sheer sake of it is found in many survival games, and it’s just as prevalent here. Everything is a chore, everything needs some special sort of fuel source, and there’s not enough room to carry it all. You start out slow, unable to sprint for long, with a terrible jetpack for a modicum of enhanced travel.

One’s abilities can have upgrades crafted for them, but upgrades share the same restricted inventory space as everything else, meaning you need to choose between being able to sprint for an acceptable amount of time or being able to carry more things. This becomes less of a problem when you buy bigger starships to carry more loot, but it remains an annoyance and it makes the early game an uphill battle against crushing ennui.

    04

Breaking up the “enjoyment” of filling your tiny (if slowly expandable) inventory with materials are frequent attacks from Sentinels – robotic annoyances that seem to be everywhere and further drive home the uniformity of this allegedly varied universe.

I like the flying and understand the frustration of mining at the beginning. It's like Terraria, you start with a wood pickax and then eventually end up with a diamond drill. I could write down whole paragraphs of what No Man's Sky is lacking, or even doing wrong, but that would be pointless as it would still deserve a 9. Why that, might you ask... For a simple reason : no game is even remotely close to what this game achieves. The only pieces of software that accomplish only parts of No Man's sky are titles like Space Engine, Starbound, Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress.

No Man's sky is a huge step forward in the direction of the game we all dream of : a huge fresh world to explore.

That being said, the game in itself is really good.

First, very moody : music and design come together to immerse you in alien nature. It can be really gorgeous, if you forgive its rough edges.

Gameplay speaking, there is always a feeling of rushing forward that I find extremely enjoyable, even when painstakingly scavenging ressources. Why not leave this planet you just began exploring ? Why not fly to the next ? Unlike other scripted games where you're tempted to look into every corner of every room in search for the littlest power up or secret, in No Man's Sky the world is so vast that you can choose what to explore and what to skip.

To sum it up, I think despite its shortcomings, this game is so unique it really stands out. Nothing is like it. I can't wait to play it again.

I also feel like a majority of that 0-3's are people who really hated this game before it even came out and haven't even played it but reviewed it poorly anyway. Me and my girlfriend have now played about 12-15 hours of this game now and I think I can review it pretty solidly. We haven't really rushed anything and we've been to about 7 different galaxy's now. You can go faster. I'm sure other people have. We are taking our time. I mean it is an exploration game. To keep it brief, this game was everything I expected. I didn't expect it to be perfect. Or the combat to be life-changing. But I did want the experience to be fun. And you now what. It has been fun. And even though we've played 12-15 hours I would imagine there is about a good 20 more hours until it all starts feeling pretty repetitive. And it will start feeling repetitive. There is a lot in the game. But a lot of it is the same. But right now it's really cool to go to the different stations, learn the language, document things. It's all really cool. Don't expect a multiplayer game. This is not that. Don't expect CoD in space, because it isn't that either. To quote Sean Murray, this is a "really chill game." You play this to wander around and collect and explore things. Some people are just not going to like that. I'd like to note that I kind of view this game like minecraft a little bit. In the beginning they didn't have half of the stuff that they do now. They created a foundation and created a base following and went from there. And from what I've seen No Man's Sky is well on its way to doing all those things. Murray and his team have promised free updates. They said we can build bases and own space freighters in future updates. I give it an 8 out of 10 right now because the fun is limited in scope and length. My idealized vision is that they will update it to raise that 8 to a 10 with future updates. I'm impressed by what this small team has done. And I hope they will continue to support this game. That's why I bought it day one. To hopefully support this incredible team enough so they will continue to make this game great, even into the future. Just a final note on some details that might be important. Inventory management is a real thing and if you don't like to micromanage this might not be for you. If you don't like to explore, or don't like mining resources to keep going, this might not be for you. If you are a chill sort of person who wants a chill experience, this game is probably for you. Let me simply begin by stating that I intend to be completely honest with this review. Contrary to the multitude of extremely negative reviews, this game is NOT a bad game. It is by no means perfect, and has a multitude of flaws, however, overall it is a fun and unique experience unlike anything currently on the market. The biggest problem with the game is not the game in and of itself, but more so the way that the game was perceived by the gaming community. When No Man's Sky was first introduced to the public several years ago, hype went through the roof. The beautiful setting, a promise of billions of varied planets, and new and unique game elements such as naming discovered planets and creatures as well as seamless planet surface to orbit spaceship travel all seemed too good to be true. While the trailer did an excellent job of amazing us, it was also rather vague and mysterious. This led to people interpreting the game in all sorts of different ways. Some people imagined massive planetary shoot-outs. Others imagined roaming the stars with friends. Some imagined encountering massive alien cities and deep, complex character side quests within these cities. Because of an initial lack of clarification with what this game actually was meant to be... this game became all things to all people, and our expectations exceeded what was ever even possible or meant to be. Hello Games did try to tone down the hype, explaining that their would be no giant cities, multiplayer would be nigh impossible, and procedural generation would prevent any "scripted" story line. However, this came a bit late, and at this point people's imaginations had taken over. No Man's Sky had become more than an upcoming game, it had become an idea. The idea that a small studio, which actually cared about it's fans, could create a masterpiece that would out-do even the richest of AAA developers. A game that would have everything. A game that would redefine gaming as we know it. Their was no way that this game could ever live up to such lofty expectations, and now fans are faced with the reality that this wasn't the game that "they" as individuals had imagined. While Hello Games tried to tone down the hype and explain that this was primarily an exploration game, people already had their own views of what this game "would and should be" stuck in their heads. When I began playing, I too had my lofty expectations. I really did hope for an infinite space Skyrim/ Minecraft of sorts. However, when I was able to take a step back, and play this game the way that developers had intended for me to play it, rather than the way I had imagined it would be, I found that the game was actually rather good. It may not have been what I wanted or expected, but that didn't mean it was bad. I enjoy being able to go down to a planet and not know what to expect. When you do find other intelligent species (NPC's) scattered sparsely throughout the galaxy it's a cool and rewarding experience. Their are A LOT of things to do, some more in depth than others. The complaint that their isn't enough to do is a rather silly one in my opinion. I've spent hours of fun exploring just one planet, and never getting bored. I've searched caves for rare materials, looked for outposts where I've come across some very interesting NPC scientists, found a distress signal pointing to ruins of an ancient civilization, searched ancient glyphs to learn a new alien language, found chests filled with ship, suit, and weapon upgrade blueprints, documented mushroom deer, come across outposts that had been abandoned hastily in response to what appeared to be experiments gone wrong, Found giant Alien Monoliths which have... done.... something.... cool? and more. And that was all on one planet. This game may not be what you imagined, but it is not bad. Not bad at all. So for now, I'll be drifting among the stars looking for my next planetary adventure. Expand

I really want to love NMS. I love the concept of an infinite universe to explore, full of unique planets and creatures. And it really is different from anything I have ever played before. And so far, every system seems to have asteroids between the planets, though their composition can vary a little. And while I have encountered three different sentient civilizations, the technology & buildings left behind by them are all identical, from what I can see. Also, I would happily suffer through a few short loading screens to avoid the screen pop-in that occurs on every planet I have visited so far. While I am enjoying my journey so far, it is not living up to my expectations. And they really need to do something about inventory and storage. It is woefully inadequate. I am looking forward to future updates, but for right now, all I can say is that the game is good, but not great. Expand

The gimmick of the procedurally generated planets wears thin soon, and shockingly the game does not have anything to base itself upon that beyond that.
It's as if a comedian told his best joke at the beginning of open mic night and then proceeded to regale the eager crowd with a story of his favorite shoe color.
The survival and FPS gameplay is arduous at best and frustrating at worst. The Sentinel robots begin to try one's nerves after the sixth millionth time you've encountered them in the same galaxy.

Inventory management is an absolute shambles as well. Micromanaging the small inventory space really starts to grind soon. I know there will be many free updates (and no paid DLC) to this game, but even if they gave me infinite space I still wouldn't like an inventory where resources and upgrades go together.

The only thing that can be said in the game's favor is that the procedurally generated planets are a technical marvel, and should be appreciated for the sheer audacity of the idea.

But I think they chose the wrong gimmick to hype up, and they should have spent more time on polishing the other elements. Fair play to Hello, but I think I have 18 quadrillion other games to play instead.

All of the gameplay elements are quite shallow. There is shooting, but it's not good shooting. There is space combat, but not good space combat. There are survival elements, but it's not good survival. There is crafting, but it's not good crafting. There are environments and terrain, but not good environments and terrain. There is trading, but it's not good trading. It's all very hollow and unbalanced. There is no challenge to survival, because every single planet has carbon within arm's reach. There's no challenge to trading, aside from confronting the tedium of filling your tiny space suit with gold and shlepping it back to the space station over and over.

We've seen all of these elements done vastly better elsewhere, and I wish NMS did even *one* of them well. It's pretty clear the focus was on making the needlessly huge procedurally generated universe work, and the gameplay elements seem kind of throwaway.

The big draw is the infinite worlds, and they're just not that varied. After ten or so planets, you'll be seeing virtually the same giant mushrooms and stout cactuses everywhere. The sense of discovery and abundance disappears very quickly. The caves in particular are nearly identical from planet to planet. The animals are repetitive too, mostly varying in the length and thickness of their legs. Also, seemingly every planet has life, and of course it's immediately visible when you land. It's so ubiquitous and unmysterious that the wonder is gone after seeing the first planet's creatures.

The vastness of space is nowhere to be seen. Each system is clustered together, and the jump between stars is essentially a cutscene animation. It doesn't take long before you feel like there are no more surprises or "wow" moments. Seemingly every single planet is littered with outposts, some abandoned, some not. So much for the remoteness of far-off planets.

It's definitely not terrible, and a lot of people are definitely having plenty of fun with it. I do plan to finish my playthrough. But it just seems to me (and I'm not alone) like Hello Games sacrificed everything for scale, and if the gameplay isn't that great anywhere in the universe, it doesn't really matter how big it is. Still, it is an important game in the larger scheme of things, and I'm excited to see where procedural generation goes in the future.

It's not perfect by any means, and many people will not like it. The game, as a pure Exploration/Survival game with other elements thrown in, surpassed the expectations I had from the interviews and trailers.

The game does not have a story, it starts you off with little hand holding and expects you to make your own way in the game world. There is an over arching goal of "Get to the center," but you can ignore it if you wish. I spent a total of probably around 9+ hours on my first planet before forcing myself to move on, and I'm sure I didn't come close to finding everything there was to be found.

There is a ton of lore spread about though. This gives you more insight into the prevalent alien species that is about. The language mechanic, while annoying in some aspects, does give a nice push to continue exploring to find the hidden knowledge portals, and a good way to help interactions as you become tied more with a specific species.

There's also what appears to be a ton of free-form "quests" that pop up. Say, you're in space and you see a trade convoy being attacked. You can join the pirates or the convoy. If you choose to join the convoy ships and protect them, you'll have a small free-form quest/task pop up after you start attacking giving you what needs to be done (i.e. how many attackers are left).

There are of course down sides...

    * The PS4 still has very noticeable pop in during terrain generation (hopefully this is greatly reduced, or gone, on PC)
    * If you're looking for it, you can start to see the different parts that make up the creatures
    * Creature animations don't always work 100% for the creature type
    * To much information in the free-form task/quests
    * You will be doing the same thing constantly

The first three are more technical, and in general art, than anything else and could possibly be fixed over time, the fourth is a personal opinion, so I'll focus on the last of my personal down sides...

"You will be doing the same thing constantly"

The main game play loop is basically: Explore, Mine, Upgrade, Move on

That's it. That is the whole game in a nut shell. If doing that basic game play on procedurally generated worlds doesn't sound interesting to you, then I'd stay away from this game. It probably isn't what you're looking for.

If it does sound interesting, then I would most definitely suggest checking the game out. So far, in the probably over 20 hours I've played since release, this has met, and exceeded, the expectation I had for it. Being I'm still on my 2nd system, I can see my self spending a huge amount of hours in this game over time.

This is honestly, the type of game I've been waiting on. I'm sure I'll get bored of it eventually, lose interest, or the next new shiny will come out, but as of this point in time, this is a great game if you didn't have unrealistic expectations about what it would be.

It's very repetitive, the games crafting system is confusing, and this game will leave you with nothing to do after just a few hours into it. Also worth mentioning one of the directors of the game said that the chances of two players meeting are "close to zero" but in reality two players already met on the same planet, but couldn't see each other, which just proves this game has no idea what it's doing. I just want to end by saying it's not a bad game, it really isn't, but it's not worth buying. If this was a free game similar to some other space based games my rating would be higher, but since this game is worth 60 **** dollars, I wouldn't recommend anyone to go and get it, unless you think an hour of gameplay is acceptable for that price tag. If you like the idea of surviving (e.g. Minecraft) but would love to explore space and would love to take your time to enjoy the experience, then this game is probably for you. This game can be somewhat repetitive since it's very straight forward (gather resources, upgrade your ship, suit, go to new planet closer to core of the galaxy). The best way to describe this game is that it's a survivor/exploring game. When I say explore I mean it literally since the developers don't know what's on every planet that's why you get units (currency) for discoveries.

This game isn't a space combat simulator, nor is it an amazing space shooter. It really reminds me of Spore, it's amazing because of the uniqueness of the game itself, not because the game itself is out of this world (no pun intended).

Yes, I can see how some could find it repetitive or boring, but no game has ever so perfectly captured the feeling of space exploration, and even after ~20 hours of playing since release, No Man's Sky continues to feed me surprise after surprise.

Most of the planets are barren or toxic. Most of the creatures are unremarkable or boring. But just when I find myself getting bored of gathering resources/crafting on barren hellscapes, I'll stumble across a lush garden world, or an ocean planet, or a panther-dragon, and find myself audibly yelling "Holy **** at my TV screen.

Its easy to think that exploration in NMS is boring until you realize how many secrets are hidden beneath the surface. Many planets that have, at first glance, prompted me to say "Oh look, Mars again" have shown to have something cool - extensive caves systems, incredibly cool plants/animals, rare resources, or hostile sentinels. These experiences are rare enough that you don't start to have them until you have played continuously for a long time, but amazing enough to make the overall experience incredible.

The truth is that if you are someone who loves space games and has always dreamed of exploring the cosmos, No Man's Sky is not going to let you down, whatever legitimate complaints people may have. It just captures the 1950's sci-fi feeling of lonely wandering in a strange galaxy so perfectly. You will recognize its many flaws and love it all the same.

It was OK for the first three months, but then there seemed to be some sort of cultural shift and PT Cruisers were now for losers. But I couldn't afford anything else and the trade-in value just plummeted. So, I had people pointing and laughing and I was embarrassed to pick up guys and girls for dates for fear they would hate my car. So I ending up staying home most of the time. No Man's Sky was hyped to basically be an infinite playground of wonder and discovery. The thing is, the underlying design and mechanics are so obvious that it is a constant struggle to suspend disbelief in order to feel immersed. I've seen many people call the game "relaxing" but how could a game be relaxing when you need to work so hard to like it? A first impression review said it well: you get out of the game what you put in. But this is supposed to be a game. A "relaxing" one at that.
When you see reused assets, the same weather effects with different labels, lack of physics or any other glaring sign of bad game design, it is on you, the player, to make an excuse to yourself to keep enjoying the game.

Ten years in the making. An (almost) overly ambitious change in environmental story telling, with proceduraly generated planets; taking the assembly of which away from artists and leaving to the computer system you are using. A huge amount of media coverage and hype. Set backs, delays, hear-say, rumor and speculation.

Now it is here. No Man's Sky available on the PS4 and by the 12th of August, for PC owners too; and, so, what are we left with? An experience that can be conveyed as simply 'outstanding'.

All games, to different degrees, use the virtual environments within them to help tell a story, or more accurately to create an experience. Since virtual environments became a viable option for the home computer game market; some games have, in the past, demonstrated that even when other elements that we have come to expect in many genres of gaming (such as story-telling, characterization, clear plot progression) fail, those games have still held the attention of many players who find something in the experience that overrides those components.

Well, let us not jump to the conclusion that there is no story or plot here! However, like the best open world rpgs; that story is largely created by you and your interaction with the most immense playing area that we are ever likely to see. The main thread that acts as a form of direction for the general player. is the simple objective of reaching the center of the universe. However, don't be fooled by that; as even that task is not a small feat and the sheer enormity of this mega-verse comes in to sharp focus.

No Man's Sky is a game that can just keep on going and going. Although certain elements of game-play will become repetitive (this is a capitulate of all games); the possibilities for exploration, creating in-game player items; combat; and soon multi-player interaction mean that even if the 'end' of the game is reaching the center of the universe, that is not really an end; but, potentially, just a beginning. Perhaps, as if only just having completed the Introduction to a huge epic book that you will write for yourself.

We recently saw a huge influx of open world games (Fallout4, The Witcher3, MGS5, GT5, Mad Max, etc.), but as it stands; No Man's Sky could easily declare itself as an open Universe game.

This game really is something quite unique; it hits you with completely immersive atmospheric and environmental story-telling and then gives you enough trinkets on top to keep you entertained and curious enough to just want more. That is the essence of gaming, the basics; and on that solid base we have a gem. A masterpiece that is pushing the boundaries; and not everyone will be intelligent enough to understand why.

No Man's Sky is readily welcomed by this reviewer, who strongly feels that he will continue returning to this game long after I have achieved any goals that I set mid-term.

Sure, but it's kind of addictive, wondering what the next planet will be like. For example, I know there are huge creatures on some worlds, and even though I've been to about 20 planets already I have yet to see any. I only found 1 planet so far with water (and a lot of it!). I've played the other space sims and this is the best.

It could be better, it's definitely not a ten. Not yet anyway. Most console players are going to be new to this genre other than Elite Dangerous on Xbox there aren't any space sims on consoles. If the space sims were on console more people would realize this is as good as it gets. None of them are perfect and this is not an excuse

You can't expect Mass Effect as awesome as that would be. It's kinda like comparing a comedy to a marital arts film and then complainig that the martial arts film wasn't funny enuff, altho it would be really awesome if it was funny too. I say all of that to say I understand why so many people are disappointed, but I gave it an 8/10 partly to counteract the hate and because after 8 hours I still like it. To be fair it's repetitive, but there are still ALOT of things I havent seen. The beauty of this game maybe just to see how many different thing this computer generated game can come up with. It may get Super weird, who knows!I like the controls they're not overly complicated like other space sims. I like that there is life of some sort which is also lacking in other sims. I like the abandoned compound which are also not present in other sims. I like the language aspect and that there are special things to discover beyond the flora and fauna like crashed ships and obelisks which again is lacking in other sims. So I'll play til I get to the center or until it gets boring cus I just want to see where it goes and I'm having a good time(so far)getting there.

The graphics and textures on PS4 are horrible. I had a few game breaking bugs. The auto-landing feature of the Ship landed me inside a tree. I couldn't do anything, I was stuck in their. My Ship then crashed and I had to farm all the resources again. I was missing 1 more resource, when I tried to buy it from a spot, it only gave a me few of the resource. I had enough to buy it and free space in my inventory and checked everything multiple times, but it wouldn't let me buy more of the ressource, no matter what I did. Played it since launch, **** of pop ins, bland worlds, boring gameplay and no real story. Sean even lied about the multiplayer, me and my friend were on the same planet and the same spot and couldn't even see each other.

Moral of the story, games by **** indie devs aren't worth 60 bucks. Do yourself a favor and wait for this to be under 20 bucks in 4 months.

It is supposed to be an explore this, see that kind of game. I would compare it to a larger never ending survival version of Journey.

If you like space sims, survival games, good artwork, open worlds and crafting/gather. This game is meant to be driven by your interest to explore or make up your own story. Its not going to hold your hand and drive you. Give this game a shot! It is a great game to experience.

Probabilmente gli amanti di Minecraft saranno molto presi anche da No Man's Sky, io no. Voto 0/10 SOPRATTUTTO a causa del prezzo da tripla A per quello che è un evidente indie. No Man's Sky is at its core a sort of space trucker simulator that entails flying around the mathematically generated space boonies visiting planets and examining flora and fauna that more often than not are as different as different sized holes in a fine slice of Swiss. Now, I'm not trying to knock the game; I myself happen to enjoy a good slice of Swiss every once and awhile, but I'm not going to leave scathing reviews for mozzarella on a cheese rating website because of it. Discounting it's wonky controls, No Man's Sky actually accomplishes everything it set out to. It's impossibly large, procedurally generated, and full of surprisingly engaging lore hidden away in a style reminiscent of the souls series. Almost all of the shortcomings of NMS come not from the game itself, but from the ridiculous fanbase that has grown up around it. Imagine being a connoisseur of swiss cheese, waiting around for the annual swisscon, only to find thousands of mozarella lovers holed up outside. The big day finally comes, and the event hall is burned down by angry mozarella lovers who finally realize that despite also being a type of cheese, swiss has an identity that is entirely different from the mozarella they know and love. What I mean to say is this; No Man's Sky is not a game for everyone, and it's mostly negative criticism is born of people coming from games like assassins creed, the Arkham series, or GTA, who's experience with open worlds is incomplete without something exploding every 5 seconds. No Man's Sky is really meant for the more niche crowd, who can wait hours for their explosions, and are entirely gratified seeing none at all. If that honestly sounds like you, give the game a try and you'll love it. If not, read this review as a 1 and leave, unless of course you enjoy being wholly let down. Some people get off on it. First of all, everything written here expresses a personal opinion, and as it is known personal opinions are subjective.

Game is technically good. Gameplay is also good in general terms. What I didn't like about it is that it is not possible to crash your ship against the ground or doing an aggressive piloting over planet's surfaces; there is an invisible wall that will not let yo get close to it; For landing you just press a button and the ship just places itself gently over the ground (that´s too simple, it is a game about space exploration, let us feel like Han Solo when piloting). About crafting and surviving, I'm not very familiar with those kind of games but the system feels quite simple and works properly.

The average-low score I'm giving to the game is because you feel you're living in a lifeless galaxy. IA is very simple, NPC are passive and its interaction with them is just merely symbolic. Also it feels quite impossible to find any other player; I don't even know if there will be an online feature to allow you to interact with other players. I've been plating for 7 - 9 hours, exploring two galaxies and my gameplay can be summarized in: 1) Land in a planet, 2) find a station 3) gather materials, discover new places and scan lifeforms (if you are too aggressive against the environment then you will have to practice your aim against simple flying robots who are suppose to carry out security duties) 4) upgrade your equipment as you discover new tech and blueprint while you are exploring / farming 5) get into the ship and overfly the planet surface looking for new stations 6) repeat from 1) to 5) until you are done 7) get out of the planet and go to the space station, sell items to make money 8) repeat from 1) to 7) until you're done with that galaxy 9) get into a new galaxy and repeat. All very repetitive.

In summary, the game has a lot of potential, the procedural generation of planets and galaxies is amazing, gameplay is smooth (except for the planetary piloting. In my opinion it is too simple). The galaxy is empty, so the gameplay feels repetitive. If new updates, expansions, DLCs or whatsoever are directed to solve this, in putting some action into the game, to find living planets, with cities, villages, new races, etc, it can then become one of the best games of the decade. Now it feels like you are the only active living form in a universe of millions of galaxies, and it bores a little bit.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
