TL;DR - Great technology, where's the [REDACTED] game?

No Man's Sky is not the intergalactic playground people had hoped it would be; it is more of a nigh infinitely big museum filled with nothing but Jackson Pollock paintings.

A few things would have made this game perfect: a multiplayer mode, a wider variety of plants and animals (and different reactions from them), a deeper interaction with aliens, huge alien monsters to fight (they may exist somewhere, but in 6 hours of gameplay I've only seen relatively small animals and they were all pacific).

I hope that with future patches this will turn out one of the best games ever made.

I think people are rushing it... with the idea that there are near infinite planets, people are rushing to just go to different planets instead of really exploring just one. I've spent so much time on this one planet I can't imagine exploring more than say 10 in total over time.
I think if anything the game faltered in saying there is an infinite amount of planets, so people ignore the detail offered on each one.

First off the lack of inventory space in the early going was a huge pain. I was constantly being alerted about no inventory space and it was extremely annoying. I realised very quickly that this is not a game meant for hoarders and even if you think its a good idea to hold onto that rare material at the start of the game, don't, as you'll be able to find plenty more when you actually need it. One of the first things I did was start working towards upgrading my inventory space. I explored some planets, found some suit upgrades, and gradually sold all the things I could find along the way which allowed me to buy a new ship with more inventory slots as well. After eight hours my inventory space had almost doubled and it made the game much more enjoyable when I did as you spend less time trying to organise your stuff. Otherwise the pros and cons so far for me are:

    PROS
Vast open world with plenty to explore
Ability to upgrade to a wide variety of different ships and multi-tools
Transitioning from planet exploration to space exploration is always fun
Landscape looks amazing on some planets from afar
Different puzzles to solve to earn rewards is nice
Wide variety of different alien species is pretty cool

    CONS
Sprint is mapped to R3 while moving is mapped to L3. Seriously who the hell thought this was a good idea? This was a major issue for me and is totally different from any gaming standard out there and was a terrible design decision. Hopefully it gets patched in a future version as I fail to see why it was done this way.
While the planets have lots of variety they lack any real depth
    No clear objectives or goals
No ability to connect with friends to play even as a duo
Textures are god awful up close (PS2 level textures)
Draw distance runs into issues when flying low on planets
No fast travel to previously discovered map markers
No dialogue or good audio effects make you want to play your own music
Various outposts and space stations feel small and limited thus far (some doors are locked though so maybe they will expand at higher levels)

As you can tell I've listed a lot of cons however even with these cons I've been enjoying the game. It is going to be a game that is what you make it to be. The first hump to get over at the start was pretty tough but once you learn to adjust I found it got better. For example I've started to set my own goals, stopped hoarding materials and sell everything, and never stay long on barren desolate planets. I think that is something important to keep in mind as well. If the planet looks like a dump then it is probably going to be as fun exploring as an actual dump would be. Remember there are 18 quintillion planets so if the planet doesn't look like it would be fun to explore then move onto the next one. In the eight hours I explored six planets and I always had the most fun on planets that had everything to offer whereas the barren planets were extremely dull and boring.

In the end my recommendation would be buy if you really enjoy exploration/survival games, wait for a price drop if you only mildly enjoy exploration or survival, and pass if you don't like those style of games or if graphics and a great soundtrack are really important to you. This game will not be for everyone.

The game looks very nice, and also makes quite fun, but 60Euro / Doller are too much!
As the game like other Survival games and makes nothing new but the other games only cost 20-30 euros / Doller.
The NPCs are lifeless and have little animations the world is very empty and the space is still empty!
I say for because price is a 4/10 and is not worth 60 Euro / Doller.

This game is very much like Starbound. How is it like starbound? Well... its a game... its about a universe, it has almost no fun features, and it relies on hype to generate the bulk of its sales.

What is the reason for exploration when there is nothing interesting in an entire universe. Keep searching planets, you might find a lizard panda!

Is this the best game ever made? no. Is this a fast paced space-sim? no. This, as Sean Murray has put it is "chill". If, from all the videos and media that has been released about this game over the past two years you had landed on a solid picture of what this game was, you're going to be disappointed because it won't be what you had pictured. I myself flip-flopped many times over that time period as to whether I was interested or not in what this game had to offer. I didn't even know until I booted it up what this game was really offering me.

You begin on a planet with a broken ship you have to find resources to ultimately get your ship up and running. This could take you a couple of minutes, it could also take you a couple of hours if you get lost in the process of finding plants and animals. It will all depend on you.

You collect resources, you improve things, you meet nondescript aliens, you explore. You name things. You sell things. Rinse and repeat. And that's where people are getting stuck, they expected more story, they expected bigger and better things. But a lot of fun can be had from navigating to planets, exploring them to find stones that teach you new alien words, new blueprints for weapons, multi-tool attachments etc. Sometimes you'll fly towards the stars and pirates decided they want what is up for grabs. Is this Elite Dangerous, no. But it's not trying to be a space combat sim. It's trying to be a game about exploring, about trying to find your way in the way you choose to the center of the galaxy. You can avoid everything, or explore everything.

I truly look forward to what Hello Games do to this game in the days, weeks and months to come. Maybe a more involved trade system, maybe a more refined map so you can call a place home. Although with the goal being to get to the center of the universe, I'm not sure they want you to call anywhere home.

While my review here is not indicative of a longer term experience (I've played about 6 hours) I think I've probably encountered the bulk of the mechanics that make up the game loop.

Most of these mechanics are relatively par for course "open world" box ticking exercises - find outposts, look for loot, expand your alien vocabulary, craft and upgrade, and that sort of thing. Whilst not particularly revolutionary all of these activities are well presented and engaging enough to keep players going for a long time. An example would be the many locked doors that require crafting/finding key types etc, which offer a tantilising motivation for pressing on. The upgrade system so far is reminiscent of borderlands, and again offers a compelling reason to keep progressing.

There's every likelihood that these mechanics may become boring and/or repetitive after a significant amount of time. Probably a good example is something like Far Cry (3,Blood Dragon and 4) or Skyrim/Fallout, where you're essentially doing the same things over and over - however, personally I still find pleasure in roaming around leveling up and just sort of taking in the atmosphere.

While a lack of clear motivation or strong narrative might put some players off, or maybe leave them feeling slightly overwhelmed or lost, there is a definite sense of place to the universe. And it's this sense of place and mystery that really does appear to be No Man's Sky's ace in the hole.

I'm often completely aghast when I think about the scale of the real universe, almost melancholy, wondering what's up there, and knowing full well that I'll never find out. No Man's Sky evokes those feeling perfectly - whilst leaving you room to make your own stories.

The game can look stunning in places, however, it's procedural nature means in other places it can often look very rough, and while there's plenty wrong with the game, for example, the first person FOV, the fact you're unable to remap buttons (which by default don't feel correct) and so on, it's a superb experience so far and one of the few games that's had me thinking about it after playing.

I find it easy to recommend the game to people, as long as they're aware of what they're getting into and are aware of what makes it special. In the same way Minecraft's lack of structure and urgency might not be for everyone, thos to whom it appeals will no doubt have an excellent time.

I don't really know where to begin. The only thing i can do is describe how i feel playing it. I am fascinated. I am intrigued. I am absolutely relaxed. I have only spent about 9 hours in the game so far, and all of that was exploring just 3 planets in the system i materialised in. I found myself fascinated by the mystery of these weird aliens, the craziness of the randomly generated worlds and just exploring.

I cannot describe how relaxing i find playing this game. Nor can i explain how confused my brain gets when i try to fathom just how big it all is. The music is a special mention here, it is SO very relaxing.

For all its good there are some negatives. I hate having to constantly refuel everything, it is tiresome. The FOV is poor. The popin and low rent texture work along with bad aliasing at times is quite an eyesore. Buti can look beyond these for what the game gives to me.

I feel as though this is a game i probably should have bought on PC to get rid of fhe visual drawbacks on pS4.

As i said at the beginning, this is not a game for everyone. People will hate it, there are already a ton of negative comments.

I for one did not get caught up in any self driven hype, i had no expectations justa desire to experience what this amazing created. And i am honestly happy they made what they have, it is a truly fascinating experience and unique amongst a sea of rehashed genres and "definitive editions". I look forward to exploring this amazing universe for years to come.

It was frustratingly dull as it forced me to REPAIR my preorder bonus Alpha Vector starship. I had been misled into thinking that I would be able to warp to another system immediately, but it had me crashed landed on a radioactive planet with a toxic atmosphere and overprotective Sentinels and a belligerent crab that I encountered when I fell into a grand canyon I was attempting to cross with the aid of my jet-pack when it ran out of gas midway across and I had to walk through a seemingly endless cave system, full of dead ends, in the hope that it would provide a surface exit - the only upside being that I was sheltered therein.

After unavoidably dying twice due to the game having a difficulty level well above Legendary, and struggling to recollect my inventory from my awkwardly located grave site, it CRASHED.

    - the Multi-tool should take longer to overheat
    - the Mining should be tripled in effectiveness
    - the Hazard protection should be quadrupled
    - the Sprint should last nineteen times as long
    - the Jet-pack should not run out of puff at all
    - the Player should exit hyperspace and crash on a more hospitable nearby planet unless they own the preorder bonus Alpha Vector starship with players therefore having time to upgrade their Exosuit and Multi-Tool should they want to explore a hazardous environment and NOT be plunged into this adversity from the start whilst the game fails to make it in any way clear that this is not their home planet and they are an alien astronaut exploring the stars

Technically it delivers on the promises made in terms of scale, variety and rendering quality. Yet, although it is an impressive tour de force of ontogenetic just-in-time procedural content generation that actually remembers all recently observed changes and very loosely fits the definition of an MMO, my hoped for chilled experience of exploration and discovery (with optional risk balanced my commensurate rewards, whose extreme difficulty can be reduced through preparatory grind) has been an abject disappointment with my astronaut apparently stuck without a way off this benighted hellhole.

I didn't even buy the game to land on the planets!

Give me the option to restart in space and the option to load the last Save that I made inside a spacestation, as in its inspiration 1984's Elite, and I will be free to explore its dynamics in dangerous "What if?" experiments just as much as explore space and get into dogfights, and won't be so crabby.

Currently i stopped playing with every other game... this is just a masterpiece. This game fills all my expectations. The only thing a miss is the online part, maybe just adding the feature to see others makes the game much more fun... discovering new planets together. Hope they make this step too :)

I found that the totality of the aesthetic experience, something I thought would really be a selling point in this game, is utterly lackluster. It's amazing just how often the sound effects and music combine to create a supremely unpleasant effect. Every once in a while the game would create a lot of fanfare over the fact that I just walked an arbitrary number of feet since starting the game. Trivial statistical events like these are treated like major events, even though they couldn't possibly be less significant. For a game that tries to emphasize biology and diversity, what ends up being highlighted is how tremendously inorganic the gameplay experience is. None of the it feels natural. It comes off like a desperate exercise in alchemy. Truly, the most fun I've had with this game was when I watched the trailer in 2014. I had my reservations that these guys were in way over their heads, and sadly, my fears are confirmed. There's a reason AAA titles are developed by huge teams: that's what it takes. As it stands, I'd say a fair price for this game is $10. Any more than that and you could be playing something so much better. Expand

    What is this game?

I kept hearing this on the lead up to release, and didn't understand why such an enigma was being made out of a technically impressive, but relatively straight forward game based primarily on exploration and resource collection. Let me be brief.

You start on a planet, decide whether to be handheld or not, and then begin the first of many, many hours of resource collection. Once you have your ship in good form, you leave for another planet, space station or wander aimlessly--your choice.

You can head for the centre straight away or not but, regardless, you will continue to upgrade various gadgets that you pretty much had from the beginning, whilst encountering the odd robot, hostile creature or pirates that follow an extremely limited set of behaviours. There is a story line buried in there, but your adherence to it is sporadic and widely-spaced, so it holds little interest in the long term as pacing is a key problem.

That's it. All the hype of the next miracle of console gaming turns quickly into a small developer punching above their weight with a ridiculously huge sandbox and bugger all to do in it--repetition sets in quickly. It's hard to know who this will appeal to as linear, focused game fans need not apply, and sandbox creatives don't have enough tools to create anything worthwhile. Unless you consider naming species and planets worthwhile, but even then, it's unlikely anyone will ever see it--I hold out hope for Planet Mcplanetyface to surface.

A huge space to explore with a significantly small, repetitive amount to do. It does seem likely that more will follow as "fans" continue to provide "feedback", lending to a further fleshed out experience in the future, but for now the description fits nicely.

Hope, however, is different than hype and I think any reasonable person knew there was no way this game was going to live up to the hype generated over the years. The concept always reminded me of a cross between taking Mass Effect 1's Mako planet exploration, adding a bit of survival and resources management, and setting it all to some highly stylized graphics. On paper that sounded like a great combination. Unfortunately what was delivered was.. well, not so great.

To be clear, at time of typing, I've put 12 hours into the game because my schedule is such that I could do so. For the first several hours, I was completely and totally enthralled. It seemed like it was going to be everything I had hoped it would be. I was in love with going to different planets, finding new flora and fauna, discovering monoliths to learn new alien languages, and renaming my discoveries and posting them to Atlas. After about 4 hours though, the cracks started to show and they have only become worse as the game has progressed.

The planets (and moons) are often very lifeless and the animal life that DO populate them almost always follow the same patterns regardless of type. Don't expect to see any kind of food chain. Meanwhile, there are often vast stretches of space between points of interest (e.g. monoliths, settlements, etc.). Think of it this way: It's like Ubisoft open world games - you're spending a lot more time getting to points than doing anything worthwhile AT the points. In addition to this, I have not once felt like I was going to die. Not even when I managed to anger 4+ Sentinels. The various toxicities of the different planets are easily mitigated through resources and then made trivial by upgrades). I've yet to run into a single hostile animal type.

The enthusiasm you'll feel about learning new languages will wear off as soon as you end up progressing further towards the galaxy center, only to run into an entirely new alien race meaning you get to start learning another language ALL OVER AGAIN. More flying around endless planets looking for knowledge stones and monoliths just to transcribe a different "language". By the time you've made any significant headway, you're likely moving on to another star that may or may not have another alien race who you can't understand.

A tip for those who have the game or are buying it regardless: Save all your units and seek out Drop Pods: They offer the only way to expand your exosuit's inventory space and you're GOING to need it. At first I enjoyed the micromanagement of the different isotopes and minerals and vendor fodder items... but after 6 hours or so, it became needlessly tedious. Any time I land my ship now the very first thing I have to do is make sure I have a stockpile of plutonium - or check to make sure I landed near a good reserve. Ship inventory can only be upgraded by buying new ships - which run anywhere from 500K to 2M plus - so immediately upgrading your exosuit's inventory is probably the smartest early investment you can make.

Transit in space is ridiculously boring. Want to get to a new planet? Hold L1 and R1 for anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes while staring at a screen counting down the distance and your fuel. If you try to use traditional boosters, you'll take 10, 20, sometimes 50 times as long to get there. Going from one star system to another is basically the Destiny loading screen - uncontrollable wormhole animation while you wait for the game to load. Only for you to land into a solar system where you get to hold L1 and R1 for a minute or so again to get to the nearest planet or space station.

After 12 hours total played (not all at once, thank God), I'm already burned out. The exploration simply isn't rewarding enough - especially when you consider that almost NO ONE will EVER see the things you've discovered and named due to the way the game is designed - and the resource management becomes exceedingly bland and tedious. Nuke those trees because Carbon is better for your Multi-Tool and Life Support, but save that Plutonium and Thamium9 for your ship or else! Gather all these multi-tool upgrades, which you won't use many of because they each take up inventory slots that are too precious to waste on many of the situational upgrades, even if you get a multitool with 15+ slots like the one I managed to luck into through a monolith quest.

I don't even have enough characters left to get into the graphical problems of the game (lots of pop in and frame drops, it's like looking at a last gen Unreal Engine based game when devs still didn't quite know how to manage it) or the fact that the game has a nasty habit of crashing to dashboard with unexpected errors that sometimes wipes out your progress, or the fact that it frequently loses connection to the online service out of the blue. Just disappointing.

There are no ice giants, no gas giants, you can't crash into a planet, you can't fly into a star and burn because system's stars are just sprites and not game objects. The marketing of this game was absolutely immoral, and one might expect better from a beard-donning hipster like Murray. Sony & Hello Games knowingly created a monumental hype around the game, and chose to be deliberately vague about the very real limitations players would experience simply so they could sell the game for full price. The hype was there because the concept was so cool. Unfortunately Hello Games chose not to deliver the game the vast majority of people wanted, and instead released one of the most sparsely designed and empty games of all time, all the while dancing around the issue of multiplayer in a deliberately vague manner so as to trick people into a buy.

An incredibly underhanded marketing campaign. An incredibly dry game (at the moment).

If Hello Games adds player implemented creativity, like base building, player customization, and the ability to make my planets comfy, then I will consider a buy next year when the game is on sale. The absolute most I would pay for this game is £20 and that only be if base building etc. was added. Without these features the game should've been sold at around £7.99, and would've been an amazingly popular indie game with a cult following.

The gathering element is particularly frustrating when you get involved in an entertaining dog fight and have to run away because you used up all your ammunition and need to go wander around looking for isotopes elements. Yeah, that sounds kinda simmy and so you can say it makes sense but it replaces fun with chores too much of the time, maybe more inventory slots will alleviate it but I get the feeling the resources are meant to hamstring you and won't be surprised if bigger ships with bigger inventory space will just need more of the resources to operate so your not better off.

Meeting aliens and learning a language is 'neat' and is a form of resource gathering that I do find enjoyable.

In the end this isn't really a game about exploring but about gathering resources and in that respect I get way more fun out of subnautica but if titles like 'Don't Starve' rock your boat then maybe you will probably get more than I did from this.

Hell, it's probably not a game for most people. But there's a lot of people out there where this might be the FIRST game that's perfect for them. It's simple: it's a very heavily economically- and scientifically-based space/ground exploration and trading game with frequent but optional space combat endeavors. While managing to stay fantastical and very sci-fi in its universal design, the game is also very realistic, and can therefore be very tedious at times, and requires you to be very intelligent in your techniques to store, trade and upgrade items, tools, ships, etc.. It's very DIY. And that's precisely why I love it so much. Now, wether or not it will hold up to hours upon hours of playing I'll have to wait and see, but at well over 10 hours in I can say that I'm not feeling any sign of losing interest.
Pretty much, think of No Man's Sky as a combination of survival mode on Minecraft with the space stage of Spore, and make it about a couple trillion times bigger, and you've got something along these lines.

Like most, I started the game with the hopes that at some point I'd run into other players, despite the odds. That upon reaching the center of the Galaxy (which I have yet to do) a community would be waiting for me. Unfortunately, no two players can ever see each other - not even if they're standing right next to each other (it's been tested and recorded). The only thing that links players together is their discoveries and the ridiculously stupid/clever things they name them.

The game is whatever you want to make of it. You have a whole universe to explore - one that can never be seen in its entirety. You can play along with the vague story the game provides or you can do your own thing. Abandon yourself upon a planet and survive, fly endlessly towards a star (I did this for hours and never seemed to get any closer), fight the Sentinels and see what crazy big backup they call in, go on a quest for power and get all the best upgrades, attempt killing off an entire planet (probably not possible), search out space battles, etc. etc. The possibilities are strangely both limitless and very limited.

All in all, it's a great game. I thought I'd be bored of it soon after I started, but that's still not the case. From a purely explorative standpoint, No Man's Sky is a masterpiece. If they somehow manage to patch in actual multiplayer, it may be one of the few examples of a perfect game.

Regardless, No Man's Sky has a very groundbreaking idea of exploring what may as well be an infinite amount of planets. And thankfully the idea is done very well, but this game won't be for everyone. Someone who doesn't like the basic premise of the game most likely will get bored of this game, but if the idea of adventuring from planet to planet acquiring more resources and better items sounds cool then this game is for you. If you are skeptical I recommend renting it if you can or letting a friend loan it for a bit because watching videos doesn't capture the feeling of the game to me. This is just the perfect game to play for an hour to kill some time. I can't imagine playing this game in long play sessions though. There are some downsides however. The ground combat isn't very good, the game can get tiring after playing for a long time in one day, and it may not be worth 60 US dollars to everyone, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. I had my expectations at a reasonable level and was not disappointed and am having a great time!

From appealing to super nerds to becoming an incredibly popular source of media consumption. With mass media consumption, sometimes the most popular things can get reduced to the lowest common denominator. Thankfully, the gaming industry, in particular indie developers, can still take risks and produce unusual, creative video games that happen to also to be marketed to the masses.

While I am not too far in the game yet, No Man's Sky has been an experience that is rather unique. It borrows ideas from many open-ended, exploration games (like Minecraft), but has a clear direction of the type of game it wants to be ~ a game for explorers, not achievers, or multiplayer show-offs, or min-max competitive gamers. People often forget that other people not only have different tastes but also have different personalities, and these different personalities will want different types of experiences. Because of mainstream gaming trends over the past two decades, gaming has produced a certain mainstream audience. This mainstream audience creates a cultural dogma that expects certain characteristics to qualify a game as a "good" game.

If you want to go in expecting some crazy AAA title experience, don't get the game. If you are expecting deep systems such as complex yet derivative crafting and battle systems that you can get in hundreds of other games, then don't get this game. If you want another linear yet rich experience just like Journey or Abzu, be careful about getting this game. Watch videos and read critic reviews when they come out. The game is pretty much what I expected from previews and I am not disappointed as a whole. Yes, there are many issues in the game, but I've also had many moments of wonder, moments I would not have in most other games.

In fact, the only real risk you have of dying is from boredom as you mine more minerals to power your mining laser and environmental suit so you can simply walk around the planet you're on.

Want to go into space? More resource grinding. Want to upgrade your ship? More resource grinding. Find a new technology in one of the identical bases scattered across the planet? More resource grinding.

At $80 there's just not enough here to suggest buying it. What there is is a cautionary note that millions of procedurally generated planets aren't content all on their own, at least not enough to make up for the lack of anything meaningful to do or interact with. At $30 or $40 I'd be a lot more inclined to recommend it - wait for a sale.

The extremism in these reviews should be taken into consideration. They are perhaps the result of those still high on the hype, or those disgruntled by the games lack of living up to the same hype. A more accurate review of this game falls somewhere in between.

    Cons:
Emphasis on survival lessens the creative sandbox/exploration elements.
Lack of multiplayer shrinks the vastness of the world.
Procedurally generated worlds eventually create feelings of a non-genuine universe.
(Inventory space becomes manageable a dozen hours in, and FOV should be updated in future patches)

    Pros:
Visually and auditorily beautiful in a unique way.
No loading screens give illusion to a vast game universe.
Switching between land/space settings keeps gameplay fresh.
Overarching goal to reach center of galaxy gives some purpose to gameplay.

Procedurally generated worlds are nothing new in the gaming world. Yet advertised as such, the universe sounded more appealing in the hype than what is reflected in the experience. The lack of loading screens makes the game universe feel vast, but the feature is nothing more than a novelty after a dozen or so worlds.

Beyond that, this game is a survival game with standard-unimpressive yet captivating enough to earn a 7/10- features: gathering, upgrading, trading, and of course, exploration. The distinguishing factor is the worlds where these features occur, and the overarching (though not game ending) goal to reach the center of the galaxy.

In imagined scale the game measures up to its name. However in perceived scale, "No Other Man's Sky" may be more fitting, as the game lacks multiplayer in every sense that matters. In retrospect the creator seemed purposely vague in this area, one of the many advertising strategies that added to the games hype.

A game with the features of a small indie game, but with a big budget, triple A developer price tag on it. It's a mix of a low budget indie survival/gathering game crossed with a low budget indie space combat game, but does neither particularly well and is bizarrely selling for more than two separate games that do each component better.

No Man's Sky is, at it's core, all about exploration. Find a new planet, discover what you can, what you like, and do with it what you will. The apparent end game goal is to reach the center of the galaxy, but **** that! I'm currently trying to save up enough money to buy a freighter, so I can collect samples from all over, meanwhile I'm meeting alien races, discovering their history, learning the languages, all the while finding upgrades for my gun, suit, and ship. It's a real **** sometimes too, having to balance between the supplies that will keep you alive and in the sky, against those that can build you that sweet new upgrade, or net a tidy profit. This is a game for people who can find the fun in a world that is left open to them.

There is little to no content to be found and the game is more of a mindless resource grind for no apparent reason other than to try and call that some slap of content. There isn't any multiplayer even though the developers spouted that there would be (Albeit Minimal). And even exploring gets dull as you quickly come to find out that everything you explore is EXACTLY like the last, Except it has been given a different color.

In the end, I would NOT recommend "No Mans Sky" to anyone, Not even to fans of bland exploration genre games. As it is just not worth the 60$ purchase.

No Mans Sky ends up being another failed game where developers promise the universe (literally) and end up delivering nothing at all.

I find it quite relaxing. I spend most of my gaming hours these days on DCS World A-10C Warthog simulator, so it's nice to shift into low-gear and just go space trucking for a couple hours at a time instead of engaging in a labor-intensive and often nerve-racking bomb and missile spree while trying to remember every function of my Thrustmaster HOTAS.

I read the reviews, positive and negative. I certainly can't give any merit to the 0's simply because it's not that bad of a game, no matter what some unenlightened and non-objective players may say. On the flip side, it's not a 10, either. Combat, while fun at times, has nowhere near the depth of, say, ELITE: Dangerous. And, as I mentioned earlier, it's quite repetitive. But the term 'procedurally generated' should have clued you in long before your purchase.

I do agree with the price point criticism. 60 dollars is steep for a game of this nature. It's more like a 40 dollar title, or 30 if you're a cheap-skate. So I took a point off my rating on price alone.

For all it's short-comings, No Man's Sky is quite addictive. I'm sure I'll tire of it at some point, but I can also foresee myself revisiting it's vast universe after a hiatus or two. Follow the advice of other wise reviewers and watch at least an hour or so of game-play streams before you buy.

Make no mistake, however, this is a pretty good effort from a modest-sized studio. It's not pretentious at all, unlike some indie 8 bit platform style games that flooded the market in the last few years. It delivers EXACTLY what the developers promised. If you find yourself displeased with the experience, it's not because it's poor title. It just means that No Man's Sky just isn't for you. Learn to separate your feelings from objective criticism. I personally detest Minecraft, but I acknowledge that it's a great game. Try doing the same for No Man's Sky.

There aren't many difficult enemies to fight (maybe there are but I haven't seen them yet). There's no challenge, just hopping from one place to the next hoping to find excitement and adventure. Due to the openhandedness of the game I feel lost, nothing grabs me and encourages me to dig deeper into the world. Which is because I know I'll never see all there is too see. No one can. There's no focus, no quests (objectives but no real characters or missions or story), not even multiplayer. This game would be more fun if you could play with friends and adventure to new worlds with them. I originally thought everyone around me was a player in a ship flying by. Nope. Those are NPCS. It's boring, and there's no change of pace. This game isn't awful, but I'd advise not playing it in prolonged sessions. 7/10 Expand

Somewhere between No Man's Sky and Destiny is the perfect game. Can someone get these two studios together please? Destiny with planet hopping would be amazing.

It turns out that my planet was in system of worlds that were full of aggressive monsters right out of Lovecraft's nightmares. I especially loved the thirty story juggernaut that smashed me with one stomp before I realized the darkness was not an early sunset. The flora is to die for. Literally. It was a pokemon space adventure as a bulbasaur looking mad pumpkin vine whipped me into submission, and paid no heed at all to my safe word.

I finally got warp cells, but here is the tragedy in all my glorious fun. Pirates. Loads of pirates who were tipped off by that dirty rotten Gek in the space station that I had bought them but hadn't yet installed them. But everything turned out okay. I only died a few times before I managed to warp out of there and find a planet of green seas and pink trees.

    Oh, what's that growling sound?

This is one of the best games I've ever had. Beautiful planets, sublime visuals, incredible diversity of plants and animals, aliens languages and the wonderful feeling of the vastness of space that I have never before gotten.

NMS can be described as a surprisingly SMALL game inside an immensely BIG sandbox. It appears that there is a debilitating void between the two that makes the player feel uneasy and impacts negatively on the overall experience. Whether this can be remedied via future updates and so the introduction of additional mechanics (such as the promised 'base building') remains to be 'Sean. (sic)

I think it a shame that this indie title got drowned in so much hype which led to many unrealistic expectations.......i suspect it also led to mistaken belief by Sony/Hello that £40 was an acceptable price tag.
If the game costs the price of an AAA title, then i am going to judge it as an attempt at such = 4/10

This is a pretty amazing game. Really enjoying exploring and mining, and I can see myself playing this for a very long time. I am pretty excited about what future updates will bring.

All planets only have one climate/biome each. Planets are miles away (note some trailers show short travel to moons, not planets which are much further away). The online "multiplayer" is extremely misleading - players cannot bump into each other in the world; rather, actions they do (like renaming things) will take effect in an asynchronous manner. The "quests" shown off were literally to gather matetials or defend/attack a faction.
NPCs have no AI whatsoever, only a select few scripted events to trigger the above. Less than 10 actual climates seem to exist in the game, with recolours being their compromise for looking like more. Due to the insanely high number of apparent planets in this game, statistically the chances of you seeing many unique ones is miniscule - rather, you're more likely to see a planet with tall mountains in red, then one with slightly shorter mountains in blue, then in green with a lake.
The more permutations in a procedural structure, the less different they are to one-another. "Combat" appears to only be basic gunplay (one of the easiest things to implement to make what would otherwise just be a simulator into a game, since implementing guns just requires basic raycasting). Optional weapon upgrades that are """crafted""" by dumping random collectibles on it. Trees, creatures, and NPCs shown off so far already have duplicates in promotional material, which is quite an antithesis to all the "there's so many permutations!" point they hammer-in

Sorry to all the ones that liked this, I'm glad you're out there for these types of games. I waited years anticipating a game where all you do is endlessly mine and look at your inventory? This is the most tedious game I've played. The gameplay isn't satisfying, and most of the planets I've visited have been incredibly barren. What a waste of money. I'll give it 1 point for art direction, but otherwise it's a pretty awful game.

If you have my imagination and are as fascinated by exploration as i am then this game holds untold hours of content. Bugs and glitches are surprisingly few, especially considering the small development team. The naming feature offers frequent hilarity, though im doubtful anyone will ever find my discoveries. Deeply disappointing boring game. Another confirmation that there is an inverse relationship between the longer the hype before release the worse the game will be. Avoid.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
